Why Performance Wear?

Numbers back up the value of one of the industry’s most important apparel categories.

Performance wear: It’s more than just a good look. Statistically speaking, it’s one of the best product categories for you to invest your time, effort and capital. Surprised? You shouldn’t be.

51.6% of adult Americans get at least 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise per week.

These percentages might not seem like a lot, but even the smallest percentage, 20.6 percent, represents a huge market. In this case, 20.6 percent of the total U.S. population of 316 million people is roughly 65 million exercisers.

That’s a lot of performance tees!

If you sold a performance tee for 13 dollars to each one of those 65 million, you’d gross 850 million dollars.

Now obviously, you won’t sell a performance tee to each one of those people, but that’s not our point here.

Our point is this: At its smallest, least logical sample (one performance tee for every devout exerciser in America), the fitness industry is so absolutely massive that you could sell apparel into it for a lifetime and still not exhaust the demand. And we’re just talking T-shirts at the moment. Once you start factoring in long-sleeve tees, jackets, fleece pullovers, yoga pants and more, you’ll start to see how much opportunity there is in the performance apparel category.

Meet Jim. Athletic, practical and style-conscious, Jim prefers his apparel to be as flexible as it is functional. He doesn’t want to fuss with a big closet, or deal with picking three to five outfits for a given day’s activities. A shirt he can’t wear to the gym or a jacket he can’t wear to the office are no good for him. His life is busy, fast-paced and diverse, and he has tailored his wardrobe to fit those needs. Day to day, Jim favors apparel that works for him from morning till night.

This morning, Jim decided on one of his favorite performance tees and a 1/4-zip pullover fleece. It’s a typical workday for him, and he needs an outfit that will be functional and stylish throughout it.

Not a “pajamas” guy, Jim strongly prefers comfortable clothing that he can throw on in the morning. The mornings are always a rush, so any apparel he can put on quickly makes getting out of bed and into the cold much easier to bear. Jim’s dog, a round-yet-energetic beagle puppy named Skipper, has to be taken outside first thing in the morning, so warm apparel, like the fleece pullover, is crucial in the colder months.

Jim is an art director for a small publishing company in the city. It’s a casual atmosphere, but also one that’s corporate enough so that he could be meeting with clients or higher-ups at a moment’s notice. The tee and pullover are perfect for him, letting him show off his personal style, while keeping him looking smart, fit and professional in the workplace.

After work, Jim heads right to the gym. With a quick change into some running shorts, the rest of his outfit transitions perfectly to working out. The pullover is great for warming up on the treadmill, keeping his muscles warm and loose as he raises his heart rate and prepares for the rest of his routine. As his routine progresses, he’ll shed down to the tee, relying on the shirt’s moisture-wicking and stylish design to keep him looking good. (The gym is still a social setting, after all.) At the workout’s close, Jim can slip on the pullover again, keeping him warm as he leaves the gym and preventing his muscles from tightening from the cold during the winter.

SUBLIMATION What is it? Sublimation is a full-color digital print technology that utilizes a combination of time, temperature and pressure to transfer special dyes in the form of a gas directly into the fabric.

The result of this process is a virtually permanent high-resolution print that will not crack, fade or peel from the apparel under normal conditions. In other words, the art isn’t printed on the polyester, but it becomes a part of it.

What kind of look can sublimation provide?

The sky’s the limit, but it’s true specialty is “allover” artwork. Everything from authentic tie-dye to camo can be achieved with this process, and it looks fantastic!

Which fabrics and colors will sublimation best work with? Most synthetic fabrics are suitable for sublimation printing; however, polyester-based apparel yields the nicest results. Whites are best, but other light colors can also be a great backdrop for sublimation.

With polyester making a huge comeback in and out of performance apparel, sublimation is a great way to print on today’s hottest styles and make them look just as great as they feel.
