Tangible assets

The announcement by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of plans to develop a new iconic waterfront destination in Dubai, stole international headlines in the first few days of January. In our world of marinas, it was a resounding start to a new calendar year as the planned marina, with 1,400 berths, will be the biggest in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The project, with its stunning lighthouse, will create another Dubai-style architectural landmark and encouraged me to run with our first ever computer generated front cover image.

The breaking news of Dubai Harbour, finalisation of an impressive new outer marina at Nanny Cay in the BVI, near completion of a marina refurbishment for London’s St Katharine Docks and the unveiling of designs for Haven Kakumäe in Estonia – aimed to set new marina standards in the Baltic – herald good things for 2017. All are covered in this issue and are sure to be revisited editorially in months to come.

This first issue of 2017 also sees us revert to our high gloss cover after opting in November/December to invest in a matt cover for a fresh look. We timed this for our bonus distribution at METSTRADE and the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference. Feedback from readers and advertisers was such that we conducted a poll from our stand in the Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP), and gloss supporters significantly outnumbered those in favour of matt.

Perhaps this is evidence that tried and tested formulas are the best formulas or, more colloquially, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” Booksellers and vinyl album producers are happily finding this to be the case.

The argument for print versus digital rattles on but printed book sales rose for the first time in four years in the UK in 2016 and recent reports indicate that 40% of Americans exclusively read paper books. E-book sales reached a peak in 2011, hit a plateau, and have since been in decline as many readers who flirted with the new technology have either returned to paper or now divide their reading between both mediums.

Digital music feeds are similarly placed. In the first week of December 2016 vinyl album sales in the UK outstripped digital music purchases at £2.4 million versus £2.1 million. Although vinyl has experienced eight consecutive years of growth in the UK, the sudden fillip was astonishing. Just one year ago, vinyl albums accrued sales of £1.2 million and digital alternatives £4.4 million. The 2016 hike has been attributed to the fact that vinyl shopping has gone mainstream – away from select specialist stores to broader high street and out of town retailers including supermarkets. And, despite the higher cost, consumers are happy to spend on something that is “more tangible”.

I like “tangible”. Here’s to glossy magazines!

Hurdles for Larnaca

CYPRUS: According to a report in Cyprus Mail, a review of the 2017 state budget conducted in December in which funds were blocked for contracting consultancy services for privatisation projects, could threaten plans to develop Larnaca marina and port.

The project to create the largest marina in Cyprus with up to 1,000 berths has reportedly attracted serious interest from at least three parties. Under the terms of the tender, submissions of interest remain open until 3rd February and the successful bidder is expected to be announced in August.

However, according to the

Kali wins first marina contract

PUERTO RICO: Kali has announced a contract with Harbormaster Development to manage the development of a new marina at an as yet undisclosed location in Puerto Rico.

Kali will manage the estimated US$10 million (first phase) development project and also manage the ongoing marina operation. The contract guarantees a US$1 million management fee for Kali for the development phase with various performance incentives that could lead to more revenue. The overall term of the contract is five years with the services agreement transitioning from project management to operational management at the end of the development phase. The agreement includes an equity participation option for Kali. The development phase of the project is anticipated to start in 2017 and continue into 2018.

Kali (OTC: KALY) is a newcomer to the Over the Counter (OTC) market and has been formed as a marketing and development company focusing on small and medium sized growth companies. Early in 2016 it announced its entry into the marine sector with the acquisition of Wave Marine & Yacht Services.

newspaper, transport minister Marios Demetriades has warned that without the funds earmarked to hire privatisation consultants, the procedure for Larnaca cannot go forward.

Discussion is under way regarding the grant of a supplementary budget specifically for Larnaca port but this will cause significant delay.

The most important marina construction decision lays beneath the surface

You spend a lot of time researching options for your marina build or upgrade. Since the anchoring is what is going to hold your marina investment in place it is arguably the most crucial components you will decide on. Seaflex is an elastic mooring solution that expands and retracts with each tide and wave, taking on and dampening the forces year after year. It does this while being invisible from the surface, creating some of the most modern, sleek, state of the art marinas of the world.

With 45 years of research and development Seaflex is the most technologically advanced mooring option in the world, anchoring thousands of marinas, wave attenuators and buoys worldwide.

Research your options, give your marina the mooring solution it deserves!

Welsh marina reconfigures berths

UK: A project to reconfigure berths at Aberystwyth Marina is complete. Walcon Marine was on site for three weeks late last year carrying out extensive work to significantly improve the marina layout.

This is the latest stage of an ongoing programme to improve the infrastructure of the marina, which

began when the marina was purchased by The Marine Group in September 2015. In addition, the marina has

recently benefited from dredging and upgraded security systems.

Director of operations, Rob Freemantle, commented: “We are always looking at ways we can improve our service offering and facilities. The new pontoon layout has made a huge impact to improve the access at the marina. By re-arranging the pontoons it is easier to navigate and allowed for the creation of some much needed larger berths. Walcon Marine has done a superb job in working with us to optimise the space available and to ensure the marina is more user friendly for our berth holders.”

Director, Chris Odling-Smee, added: “The development of Aberystwyth Marina mirrors the significant programme of investment we are rolling out in Cardiff and across the company as a whole. We have made a long-term commitment to improve Aberystwyth Marina and are looking at long term strategies for continually growing our services, such as our recent purchase of a water injection dredger. This allows us to ensure we are looking to the future and continuing to deliver a first class service to our berth holders.”

smaller vessels of up to 60ft (18m) at additional slips. A sloped sport dock has also been added to accommodate kayaks, paddleboards and PWC.

SF Marina Systems USA used its Type 400 floating breakwater, cast in a single 82ft (25m) section and moored on seven 18in (46cm) socketed piles to resist wave load. Type 1000 and 1500 single cast solid concrete floating structures, designed and customised for the site conditions and requirements, were also used.

The units are constructed from reinforced concrete and Styrofoam, for superior strength, stability and buoyancy. They are engineered to last for decades and handle harsh conditions with minimal maintenance.

Hyatt Marina also features internal pile guides, solid concrete angled fingers with rounded ends, five and ten ton stainless steel bollards, threephase power and an in-slip pumpout system with under-deck waste hydrants.

The marina system was installed by Reagan Construction and Harbor Engineering acted as engineer for the project.

Revamp completes at St Katharine Docks

UK: The refurbishment of all three basins at St Katharine Docks in London is due to complete by the end of this month (January). The central basin was refurbished in time to welcome the famous Clipper Race fleet on 31st July 2016 and the east and west basins are nearly ready for hand over to general manager Paul Tetlow.

The involvement of leading industry experts and suppliers has ensured that the changes made give the historic docks a new lease of life, with a modern marina layout designed by Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&N Marinas), new pontoons manufactured by Poralu and services installed by Maricer.

“Operationally and aesthetically, the marina has seen dramatic improvements, with its new berth layout, more efficient use of the waterspace, safer and improved services, and all round cleaner lines,” said C&NM technical and projects director Bill Green. He also noted the challenges of working

around listed infrastructures and overcoming the logistical problems of getting equipment in and out of a site that remained in the public domain.

The marina was largely operational throughout the refurbishment process.

St Katharine Docks can now accommodate a wider range of boat sizes up to 40m (131ft) at timber decked curved pontoons that have been designed to follow the lines of the quayside. Premium gates have also been added bearing the Poralu Marine signature. Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) of Ireland handled the logistics and the installation.

By the end of February, the entire marina will be fully operational and handed over to C&N Marinas to manage on behalf of the Blackstone Group.

DC marina boosts IGY network

USA: Florida-based IGY Marinas has been appointed to manage National Harbour Marina (above), a 70-slip facility just 15 minutes from Washington, DC. The contract expands the IGY network, which comprises 14 marinas in seven countries.

The new northeast location is a milestone for IGY’s expansion in the USA. “National Harbor has become a major tourism destination and hot bed for new development projects, making it the perfect location for IGY Marinas to expand its presence in the area,” says IGY CEO Tom Mukamal. “National Harbor and the Washington DC region were high on the list and, due to the success of the development in the area, the marina provides great potential as a yachting destination. We look forward to working with local stake holders and our strategic partners within the industry to make this destination the yachting epicentre of our capital’s region.”

As part of the integration process, IGY will team up with the marina to begin implementing services and operations. It will also leverage existing relationships within its network, host special events and run initiatives to raise the maritime profile of the marina to a new level.

COVER STORY: Plans for MENA’s largest marina

UAE: As Marina World closed for press, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the development of Dubai Harbour, a unique new waterfront destination that will feature the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s largest marina.

The project, located in the area between Jumeirah Beach Residences and Palm Jumeirah known as Mina Al Seyahi, will be developed by Meraas.

Styled as an iconic waterfront destination, Dubai Harbour extends over 460 acres (186ha) and will include a 1,400 berth marina as well as a cruise ship port and terminal, a giant shopping mall, an events arena, luxurious residential buildings, hotels, offices, public services, restaurants, cafés and Dubai Lighthouse.

The masterplan of the new destination integrates Skydive Dubai, Dubai International Marine Club and Logo Island into a single community. To

be developed in phases, Dubai Harbour will be completed in four years once ground has been broken.

A more detailed report will appear in the March/April issue of Marina World

Dalma development completes

UAE: Marinas Performance, a joint venture of Australia-based Superior Jetties and UAE-based Al Masaood, has installed a 152-berth pontoon system (below) on Dalma Island 42km (27mi) off Abu Dhabi.

The Dalma project has been implemented to further develop and enhance existing on-water facilities and caters strategically for local fishermen with berths for 15m (49ft) fishing boats and wooden dhows and leisure boats of 5 to 15m (16 to 49ft).

With all-concrete Superior Super Elite pontoons, the marina features 3m (10ft) wide main walkways and 1.6m (5ft) wide x 15m (49ft) long concrete fingers moored by Seaflex. The anchoring system, which comprises 280 Seaflex units and concrete deadweight blocks, was facilitated by the use of Superior’s Trumpet mooring guides, which are cast into the pontoons and allow for topside adjustments from the deck.

Modifications to the existing rock revetment wall were required to allow for the installation of 16m (52ft) long aluminium gangways. All components were fabricated at the company’s yard in Sharjah.

The installation was completed with Rolec Classic pedestals and a bespoke fire-fighting system.

Multiple options at IWMC

NETHERLANDS: Over 200 marina professionals from 39 countries took part in the ninth ICOMIA World Marinas Conference (IWMC) in Amsterdam 17th-19th November 2016. The event dovetailed with the final day of METSTRADE.

Keynote speaker Adjiedj Bakas examined the future of leisure around the world, looked at boating and marine market trends and urged marinas to focus more on offering a community lifestyle. Follow-on speakers and panellists examined current thinking in terms of global marina operations; new ideas and trends; redevelopment of marinas; success with superyachts; concessions and financing; environmental legislation; water planning; marketing; and uniting the public and private sector.

In addition to attending the conference proceedings, delegates enjoyed a welcome dinner and had access to a greatly enlarged Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP) at METSTRADE where they could network with 64 exhibiting companies. They were also able to book one-to-one meetings at a business matchmaking event.

On the final day, a large party of delegates enjoyed an excellent field trip, travelling by land and water to visit Marina Volendam, Marina Enkhuizen and Marina Muiderzand.

IWMC 2016 was organised by the ICOMIA Marinas Group in partnership with RAI Amsterdam and was hosted by the HISWA Holland Marine Industry Association.

The 2018 IWMC event will be held early in the year in Auckland and will be organised by the New Zealand Marina Operators Association. “This conference will again be a perfect opportunity to accelerate contacts and new investments, generate ideas and trends to make marinas more sustainable, and enable the expansion of marina chains and consortium on an international level,” commented Roberto Perocchio, chairman of the ICOMIA Marinas Group.

Outer marina opens at Nanny Cay

BVI: A new outer marina opened on 12th December 2016 at Nanny Cay in Tortola. When fully complete, it will almost double the dock facilities to 300 slips, split between the inner and outer marina.

Currently, 42 slips are operational along the mangrovelined shore and a further 78 should be in place by August. The total of 120 slips is suitable for yachts of 30 to 75ft (9 to 23m) with T-heads and a bulkhead capable of berthing megayachts up to 150ft (46m) in length. Nanny Cay will be able to dock up to ten vessels of over 100ft (30m).

The 6.5 acre outer marina peninsula will also have eight new condo blocks, each with three four-bedroom and four threebedroom condo units; enhanced walkways and recreation areas; a new restaurant; gym and wellness centre; and new commercial retail and service space.

All pontoons were supplied by UK-based Walcon Marine and sheet piling provided by US company CMI.

GLOBAL REVIEW 2016

Collaboration was the name of the game

Last year was one of acquisitions and collaborations, with expansion – both in berth numbers and sizes – the prevailing focus. Charlotte Niemiec highlights some regional developments.

Developments in Europe remained strong last year, despite uncertainty across the region. In the UK, developers of the new Victoria Marina waterfront in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, progressed the project after completing a new outer breakwater. The plans for the marina allow for a new, landscaped square centred on the Victoria Barracks, with new amenities and affordable homes set against the backdrop of the 400-berth marina.

On the mainland, plans were submitted for a £19 million, 400berth marina and associated facilities in Stourport on the River Severn. The development will include 108 holiday apartments, a marina club house with restaurant, a bar, gym, boat hire and sales facility. MDL’s Chatham Marina on the River Medway in Kent was also set to undergo a £500,000 expansion to include the addition of 54 new berths.

In London, Camper & Nicholsons Marinas (C&NM) was appointed

to take over the management and operation of St Katharine Docks, the finest marina in central London. The marina was to be carefully refurbished, restored and relaunched later in the year under the C&N brand, with 170 new berths for vessels up to 40m (131ft). It now nears completion (see World News).

Portonovi Marina, due to open this year in Montenegro, will feature a range of berths up to megayacht size.

Also in the UK, The Marine Group – owners and operators of 350-berth Cardiff Marina and 160berth Aberystwyth Marina – expanded the size of its boatyard at Cardiff Marine Village to become the largest facility of its kind in Wales. Planning permission was also secured to double the size of the existing drystack facility which, at the time, had racking for 110 vessels. Significant progress is being made (see World News).

In Croatia, Marinetek NCP was appointed to reconfigure and rebuild Marina Kornati, one of the biggest and busiest marinas in the country. The contract involved removing the old jetties and installing a new floating pontoon system. And in Dubrovnik, the company built Veljko Barbieri Slano Marina, the first marina to be built by the Adriatic Croatia International Club (ACI) in 18 years and the 22nd in its portfolio. The 200 berth marina for vessels up to 20m (66ft) in length was completed in June and opened in early August.

In Italy, Marina d’Arechi, the 560berth marina in Salerno on the Amalfi coast, significantly increased its mooring capacity further to completing

a final phase extension. Milan-based engineering group, Ingemar, added 400 berths for vessels of 20m to 36m (66 to 118ft). Also in Italy, Porto Lotti added new superyacht berths at a customdesigned floating breakwater pier.

In Spain, Mataró Marina Barcelona opened with berths for around 30 large yachts up to 50m (164ft). The marina is equipped with all modern services and an extensive service area. Off the coast, a 700-berth facility for local boats up to 10m (33ft) opened in Gibraltar, complemented by a fixed breakwater, which acts as both a public promenade and a mooring pier for superyachts and passenger vessels. The complete facility – Mid Harbour Small Boats Marina, Public Promenade and Super Yacht Wharf – was described as “the largest one-off marina engineering project in the EU in many decades.”

Meanwhile, in Portugal, Macau Legend Development Ltd signed an MoU with the Setúbal Municipality for the proposed development of an integrated leisure, tourism and entertainment project. The first phase will include a hotel, shopping area, residential area, marina, car park, multi-sport pavilion and a gaming arcade.

Montenegro was the focus of further development, and construction began on the Portonovi Resort Village Marina. It will feature 220 berths for vessels up to 70m (230ft) and, seasonally, will be able

to berth the largest superyachts afloat on an alongside berth. Due to open this year, Portonovi Marina incorporates a number of berths for small boats owned by resort residents and a selection of berths for visiting yachts and superyachts. Meanwhile, the purchase of Porto Montenegro by the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) included plans to double its size from 450 berths to 850. It has added the world’s largest superyacht berth to its mix. At 250m (820ft), it is an investment for the future launch of ever larger yachts.

In Cyprus, PMV Maritime Holdings announced it would build and manage a new marina at Paralimni in the Famagusta district in southeast Cyprus. It will be built in the Saint Nicholas fishing shelter area and will have capacity for around 300 yachts. And, in Malta, a 274-berth marina was set

to be built in Valetta. Pontoons will be wider than the local average and boat owners will benefit from controlled access car parking, 24hour berthing assistance and security, along with concierge services. The marina will offer berths for vessels up to 28m (92ft). Dedicated and shared berths will be available for visiting yachts of up to 24m (79ft) and, during the tourist season, the 120m (394ft) outer breakwater will welcome superyachts of up to 50m (164ft).

Finally, in the north of Europe, New Port Imatra, an extensive but run-down 700-berth marina on Finland’s Lake Saimaa, became the ninth marina in Marinetek’s New Port Marina chain. Marinetek joined forces with stateowned company Meritaito Ltd to offer the city of Imatra a complete package to operate, renovate and finally rebuild the marina.

Big bucks down under

In Australia, a world-class marina was announced for Koolewong on the central coast of New South Wales (NSW). Ten catamaran berths and ten visitor berths have been incorporated into the 50-berth design but there is

space to double the size of the marina in five years if permissions are secured.

An AU$31 million plan was also announced to rejuvenate The Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) marina and waterfront in Geelong, Victoria. This features a circular floating marina system that will boost the current berthing capacity at the club from 250 to 370 berths. Meanwhile, an AU$30 million redevelopment plan for Sydney Superyacht Marina was approved by the NSW Planning Assessment Commission. The plan includes amending the existing pontoon arrangement to accommodate a wider range of vessels and adding two new buildings to house superyacht associated businesses and a superyacht club.

The Derwent Sailing Squadron in Hobart, Tasmania, completed an AU$6.5 million marina expansion, allowing it to accommodate larger yachts and host a variety of new sailing events. It added 145 berths for vessels of 10 to 30m (33 to 98ft), using pontoons that are easily modified to take boats of 15m to 18m (49 to 59ft) in the future. Derwent Sailing Squadron now has 280 berths, which has significantly helped to meet a pent-up demand for berths in the area.

Ardent Leisure, owner of d’Albora Marinas – Australia’s largest marina group – placed its marina portfolio of over 1,300 berths at seven sites in Victoria and New South Wales on the market.

In New Zealand, Kennedy Point Boatharbour released preliminary conceptual design plans for a marina of around 200 berths proposed for Kennedy Point in Putiki Bay, on the southwest side of Waiheke Island.

Off the coast, pre-construction processes began for the AU$100 million Nawi Island Resort project in Fiji. Offering 166 berths, including space for ten superyachts, the development will include 40 private villas and full resort amenities.

A 300-berth marina off the coast of Hulhamalé is in build in the Maldives.

Acquisitions abound in the US

During a fairly quiet year for the USA, Bellingham Marine and Moffat & Nichol were contracted to design and build a new marina on Washington DC’s waterfront. To be called The Yards Marina, the facility is an integral part of The Yards neighbourhood, which features a blend of retail, dining, residential and office space within walking distance of Capitol Hill. The marina was scheduled to open during the spring and includes 50 slips ranging from 40ft to 125ft (12 to 38m). Half of the marina’s slips are reserved for short-term stays of less than ten days.

In Florida, Marina Palms Yacht Club opened for business. A high-end, fullservice facility on Maule Lake in North Miami Beach, it features 112 wet slips for boats of 40ft to 100ft (12 to 30m).

Safe Harbor made its debut as the “largest marina owner in the United States”, having completed acquisitions from four separate marina owners and operators. At the time, the company owned or managed 31 marinas across 12 US states, collectively offering over 20,000 wet and dry slips. Later in the year, Safe Harbor purchased Grand Isle Marina in Grand Haven, Michigan, which has 400 berths and a drystack for around 150 boats.

a busy year for acquisitions. Early in the year, it joined forces with Valiant Holdings LLC to improve the Ocean Marine Yacht Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. Suntex purchased the property and will operate the newly-named Ocean Yacht Marina. It has 112 wet slips, a drystack for 275 boats and can cater for megayachts. Later in the year, Suntex acquired Kentucky Dam Marina and Crosstimbers Marina, boosting its portfolio of owned or managed marinas to 31 properties. And, before the year was out, it had purchased 209-berth Wolf Creek Marina on Lake Cumberland, Kentucky, bringing the total to 32.

In the Caribbean, Crane Materials International progressed a new marina at Golfito Marina Village & Resort in Costa Rica and, in Bermuda, development started on Caroline Bay Marina in the Caroline Bay resort development at Morgan’s Point. The marina is set to be the hub of a new luxury residential community designed by SB Architects, featuring space for 23 visiting megayachts. The resort is poised to play its part in rebranding Bermuda as a luxury destination and will offer essential mooring during the America’s Cup.

Rampant growth in the Middle East

As in previous years, growth in the Middle East seemed unstoppable.

In Dubai, work began on converting Port Rashid from a commercial port to a sea-orientated lifestyle destination. The proposed master plan includes leisure facilities, cultural venues, hotel and villas. Its specific focus, however, is on the superyacht sector, aiming to set a new benchmark for Dubai and potentially for the entire Middle East. The new marina, placed within a vibrant waterfront development, will include a club house and sailing club, a sports centre, an exclusive club for superyacht owners, captain and crew recreational facilities and accommodation, drystack storage and a maintenance facility.

Later in the year, it was announced that the Dubai Water Canal project was soon to complete and plans for Marasi Business Bay were unveiled. These include five marinas, lined with

palm-trees, to be built along the canal waterfront. Touted as Dubai’s “major future landmark”, it is expected to be the region’s first ever purpose-built yachting destination. The construction and opening of the promenade – the largest in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – was expected to open by the end of the year.

In the UAE, Rak Properties

PJSC signed an agreement with marina management company ART Marine Marinas to operate the newly constructed Lagoon Marina, which is located at the heart of Mina Al Arab – an eco-themed coastal waterfront community. The initial phase accommodates 56 berths for all types of boats up to 30m (98ft) in length and complements the dynamic neighbourhood of Lagoon Walk, a 1.2km (0.7mi) waterfront promenade lined with restaurants and cafés that enjoys unobstructed sea views and stunning sunsets. Meanwhile, Marina 1, which is home to the first of four marinas and part of the Al Zorah project, was expected to open by the end of the year, featuring 47 berths for yachts up to 24m (79ft).

Elsewhere in the UAE, work began on a 110-berth marina at Hidd Al Saadiyat (Happiness Island) in Abu Dhabi. With completion scheduled for April this year, it includes plans for 461 modern villas and a world-class yacht club accessible to marina visitors.

Finally, in Bahrain, Amlak initiated the second phase of the Bahrain Marina Development project, a world-class coastal facility in Manama that is poised to become the kingdom’s prime lifestyle and leisure destination. Scheduled to complete in 2020, the mixeduse project will include recreational waterfront space and a large yacht club with a substantial marina.

Superyacht focus in Asia

There were good signs of further growth in Asia. In Korea, a marina project in Dangjin, South Chungcheong, which was put on hold due to a lack of investment, was finally financed by a Chinese investor. It marks the first time a foreign investor has taken part in a development project related to Korea’s yacht tourism industry. China’s staterun Liodi Group submitted a plan to invest 114.8 billion won (US$96 million) in developing the port in Waemok, Dangjin, with a view to building a 300berth marina and associated facilities and yacht club.

In Taiwan, YuYue Yacht Company and Bellingham Marine signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining ways in which the companies will work together to create new marinas in Taiwan. They said the growing popularity of recreational boating in the country is straining available resources. Three marinas were completed in 2013, adding 200 slips to the region, but these have all been filled.

In Vietnam, the first international superyacht facility opened in Danang city in June. Several yachts, the largest

over 120m (394ft), were pre-booked for the summer months. The marina completed a first-phase development and will be further expanded over the next two years to accommodate yachts of unlimited size, stern-to and alongside, at floating pontoons. The marina has been planned as a major superyacht base for Southeast Asia due to its central location halfway between Hong Kong and Singapore, across from the Philippines and Indonesia. The marina will be complemented by a yacht club, with yacht repair and maintenance services available.

Development ramped up in Thailand. Port Takola Marina and Yard in Krabi, Phuket, soft-opened in May, providing much needed berths close to the international tourist destinations of Ao Nang and Zhang Nga Bay. Set on a private estate, it will be the focal point of a low-density, low-rise resort with residences, hotel and nature trails. Over time, it will expand to offer 260 berths, boast an architectdesigned capitainerie, and host offices and shops for yachting-related businesses.

And, while the chairman of Royal Phuket Marina

created international interest by putting the award-winning marina up for sale, the government announced it had agreed to build eight new marinas, as part of a plan to turn the country into a marine leisure hub. Four will be built in the Andaman Sea and four in the Gulf of Thailand. At least two will be capable of handling superyachts.

The Maldives sought to further extend cruising circuits. Leading yacht agency Asia Pacific Superyachts Maldives (APSM) oversaw plans for a new 300-berth marina on a manmade island to the west coast of Hulhamalé. When complete, the development will feature shops, food and beverage outlets, a yacht club with exhibition space and dry berth facilities. The proposed marina will be vitally important for the development of the Maldivian tourist industry, as more than 80% of all ocean safaris operating in the Maldives anchor in the adjacent lagoon.

Opening the door to a destination

Halfway between the Tuscan towns of Castiglioncello and Rosignano Solvay lies Marina Cala de’ Medici – a doorway to the surrounding area and a starting point for exploring the Tuscan Archipelago, the Etruscan coast, the hinterland, historical and natural attractions, and the region’s wide range of food and wine.

The marina sits within the beautiful National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the largest marine park in Europe. The park includes the islands of Elba, Capraia, Gorgona, Giglio and Montecristo, which form part of the Pelagos Sanctuary for marine mammals – a protected area established by agreement between Italy, the Principality of Monaco and France. Just 44km (27 miles) away from Pisa airport, the marina has numerous links to major European capitals. Its position is central to the internationally renowned artistic cities in Tuscany, such as Florence, Siena, Volterra, Pisa and San Gimignano.

The town of Castiglioncello is within walking distance, offering panoramic views of lush pine groves and spectacular cliffs dropping down into the Ligurian Sea. Castiglioncello became a popular tourist destination in the 1960s, after it was selected as the location for several successful Italian films. Despite its continued popularity, the beach is clean and the water crystal clear.

A floating city

Now boasting 650 berths for boats from eight to 36m (26 to 118ft) on nine pontoons, the marina was tentatively started in 1999, with the structural sections of the seawalls, piers and jetties completed in 2004. From the outset, its mission was to be not just a

place to moor up, but a five-star resort offering world-class facilities. Planners of the marina recognised early that, in line with sweeping improvements to marinas across the world, boaters’ expectations were rising rapidly and the nautical tourism industry was set to change. With this in mind, the marina was built to be a destination in its own right.

“We are convinced of the substantial difference between simply managing a port structure and making it a place where values, culture and sport merge,” a spokesperson for the marina says. “To sum it up in a few words, Marina Cala de’ Medici is like a floating city that is part sea, part land.”

Marina staff are proud of its location and aim to integrate it with the economic and cultural aspects of the region by hosting events, art exhibitions and cultural conventions. They get involved in local environmental initiatives and help train new professionals in the nautical field. Training and collaboration is an important part of the philosophy held by marina director and CEO Matteo Italo Ratti. He feels that if marinas are

to be successful – particularly those in Italy – they must collaborate. He believes Italian marinas can gain more visibility and increase in value if they merge services. In his words: “Ports in the future must have quality – and they must be part of a network.” The relationship between the authorities and marinas is also important; Marina Cala de’ Medici takes pride in opening dialogue between ports and government on legislative and fundamental aspects affecting port management.

Award-winning facilities

The marina’s extensive services and facilities have been recognised by the MaRINA Excellence classification from Registro Italiano Navale, receiving five ‘wheels’ – equivalent to five stars for hotels. It shares this certificate with just one other marina in Italy, Porto Lotti in La Spezia (see Marina World Nov/Dec 2016). It has also been awarded the ’24 Plus’ classification from MaRINA for the services it provides to superyachts and megayachts.

Facilities include a 3,000m² (32,292ft²) shopping village inside the port, containing a large variety of shops, restaurants, bars, a gym and newly-opened spa, a yacht club and a shipyard. Marina staff take protection and security seriously: an internal elbow-shaped seawall protects the port, staff help visitors moor promptly around the clock, while security guards man the port area on a 24-hour basis and 32 latest-generation security cameras monitor the entrances, steps and jetties. At the entrance to the port, on the lee breakwater, there is a fuel station providing unleaded petrol and diesel

every day. Dockside pedestals provide two-phase and three-phase electricity along with drinking and non-potable water.

For sports fans, the marina will soon open an area dedicated to sports, offering lessons and practice in sailing, diving, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Additional services provided include a laundry, internal and external boat cleaning, checking of tops and fenders, mooring, staircase cleaning, underwater works, storage and porter services, maintenance box building, electrical and mechanical assistance, routine maintenance, lift service, sale of outboard motors, insurance, ship’s logs, on-board sail service and more.

The marina continually strives to improve the service it offers. Work has recently begun on a new area, which will provide a laundry space and a comfortable waiting room, with hot beverage and snack vending machines. It has also started revamping its existing lodging facilities, with plans for seven more. These modern, well-equipped lodges will welcome guests arriving on foot, not just those who moor up at the marina. The lodges currently in place include a loft with five beds and two small two-bedroom apartments.

These can be rented on a short or long-term basis and include the use of most marina services. A shuttle service between the airport and marina is available on request.

Modern mooring

The marina has recently launched a new Internet portal and associated app designed to speed up service for both visitors and permanent residents. The portal is divided into the sections of the port – shopping village, yacht club and shipyard – allowing news to be communicated quickly. It allows visitors to book mooring, on-board services, electric cars and tables at participating restaurants from the comfort of their computers. It also provides updates on weather conditions in real-time, utilising images transmitted by a webcam, with sea and wind forecasts provided by the Lamma Service. Users are not restricted to the computer; a dedicated Marina Cala de’ Medici app, offering the same service as the portal, is available on the Google Play and Apple app stores. Users of the app can even request the services of mechanics or cleaners from the marina’s port service. One section of the portal is reserved specifically for members. It can be accessed via a members-only restricted area and allows users to view information about their accounts and report any problems related to their berths. Through this, each job performed by employees of the marina can be monitored or assessed by its members.

The app is currently only in the Italian language, but a spokesperson said an English version would soon be rolled out.

Clean, modern facilities enhance comfort for berth holders and crew members.

Hoists for home and export markets

With orders in progress or deliveries completed for leading UK marina chains such as MDL Marinas, Premier Marinas and Yacht Havens Group, Yorkshire-based Wise Handling continues to maintain a strong foothold on its home market.

“We’ve just delivered a new machine to Troon Yacht Haven in Scotland and are working on an order for Partington Marine in Pwllheli, Wales,” managing director Barrie Sutcliffe told Marina World. Other highlights in the UK include delivery of a Wise W20 hoist with remote control (inset right) to Ridge Wharf Yacht Centre & Boat Yard on the River Frome near Poole Harbour. The company, which has 170 moorings and extensive hardstand and wintering facilities, was looking to replace its

41-year-old Wise machine; still in full working order but lacking the benefits of modern technology.

Export sales have long formed an essential part of Wise Handling’s business planning, and deliveries are far reaching. “We’ve secured four more orders in France, have three machines due for commissioning in the Middle East and have hoists in build for customers in Thailand and Australia,” Sutcliffe confirmed.

Conolift package at work at Harbour West

Kropf Industrial has delivered a complete Conolift boat handling system to Harbour West Marina in Hamilton, Ontario. The package includes an 80 ton mobile lift, 60 ton self-propelled trailer and galvanised boat stands. The equipment is now an integral part of Harbour West’s marina operations, which have been transformed in the past year with the construction of a new haul-out and storage location.

The 80 ton lift gives Harbour West one of the largest lift capacities in the region. Radio remote control operation provides maximum safety and efficiency while diesel power and quality components ensure economical and reliable operation.

The 60 ton self-propelled trailer features four-wheel steering, which allows the marina to maximise storage capacity at its indoor facility. The trailer can haul powerboats and cradled sailboats and can be operated by remote control allowing the operator to always be in the best position for safe operation.

Hamble yard replaces lift dock

A major civil engineering project started in early December 2016 to replace the boat lifting dock at Hamble Yacht Services (HYS). The dock, which has been in operation for the past 44 years, has become one of the busiest boat lifting facilities in the UK.

Scheduled to take 12 weeks to build, the dock will accommodate the yard’s 80 tonne hoist and a second 40 tonne hoist. All will be ready for the start of the spring sailing season.

The completely new structure has been designed by Mayhew Callum and is being built by Walcon Marine. Walcon is putting some heavy resources behind the new build, including its fleet of three barges, which range from 21 to 24m (69 to 79ft) in

length, to assist with construction and movement of equipment.

The project represents another significant infrastructure investment for Hamble Yacht Services, a yard that has been steadily undergoing major improvements since being taken over by new owners in early 2015.

“Our hoist operations are core to the services we

provide,” reports Bertie Bicket of HYS. “By ensuring that our facilities are completely up to date we are securing our position as the leading site for the lifting and storage of large and small vessels on the Solent.”

Hamble Yacht Services enjoys a central Solent location and is the busiest yard in the country for grand prix racing boats, oceangoing cruisers and legendary classics. Up to 64 vessels can be – and have been – launched in a single day, setting a UK record. The hoist dock has the capacity to lift yachts up to 33.5m (110ft) long, 7.3m (24ft) beam and 5.5m (18ft) draft.

“The integrity of the new dock’s structure will be of the highest specification,” Bicket says. “The project started right on time and our site tenants, owners and contractors will experience very little disruption.”

All major structures and equipment will be brought in from the seaward side by barges rather than by road and the old frame and metalwork will be removed in the same way.

“Our lifting and launching capabilities at HYS will have been completely updated by the spring. Both the hoists are also undergoing complete servicing and refurbishment during this time,” Bicket confirms.

Canoe Brook, New Jersey, USA - Objective: 136,000 kWh!

The floating solar system set up close to New York is at peak output.

More than 8,000 references over 5 continents

"An innovative installation producing renewable energy, designed and built with the specialists in floating structures"

The Canoe Brook solar energy power plant has been in operation since summer 2011, and the energy produced there is set to power a New Jersey water treatment plant.

The objective of this floating solar system when fully set up and in operation is thus to generate 136,000 kWh of energy each year.

To make this happen, a partnership has been established between Eneractive Solutions (energy solutions), Seaflex (anchorage) and Poralu Marine (floating platforms).

Through its Canadian subsidiary, Poralu Marine, a manufacturer of equipment for nautical infrastructures, was able to provide comprehensive solutions to the project’s many constraints: budget, stability, longevity, resistance to ice and reduced maintenance.

Solar energy is central to my reflections about the future of our environment.

I have confidence in the quality of Poralu Marine’s R&D services to continue innovating and providing new processes.

Adjustable racking saves space

Recognising that powerboats come in many shapes and sizes, UK company Wickens Engineering has created a racking system that uses adjustable beams and bearer brackets to enable stack operators to make the most effective use of storage space.

Sales director, Tony Collins, explains the concept. “The horizontal beam can be adjusted vertically at each level to suit different boat heights. Adjustable bearer brackets mean that the width of the bearers can be changed to suit any boat width with minimum tooling and without any extra drilling required. So, as boats change and owners come and go, the racks can be adjusted to avoid wasting space. This is particularly important for covered or indoor drystacks with height limits.”

To complement growing interest in drystack at marina sites in the UK, Wickens is receiving more enquiries from harbour authorities and owners of accessible waterfront. Many, such as Saundersfoot Harbour, have limited berthing and shore space.

Saundersfoot – a small traditional fishing village in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park – has incorporated a drystack into an extensive harbour development plan. The harbour authorities sought racking for boats up to 6m (20ft) so as to maximise boat storage opportunities.

Saundersfoot Harbour CEO Michael Davies knew there was sufficient demand for drystack but has been careful to introduce the project on a rolling basis to ensure continuity of service and best fit with the economic plan. “We introduced the drystack knowing it is a well proven, tried and tested model for boat storage,” he said. “We wanted to ensure we could properly service our customers’ launching needs so we have deliberately filled the stack in stages over the last couple of seasons, starting with 30% capacity. If we’d filled it 100% in week one, we would have had a customer service problem on our hands with everyone wanting launching and recovery at the same time. Instead, we wanted to grow the business steadily, building capacity and staffing levels hand-in-hand.”

Wickens was appointed through a tender process to create a flexible system that could be altered over the years as demand grew and changed. The company created a racking system with holes every 10cm (4in) enabling

A flexible racking system has been installed at Saundersfoot Harbour UK, as part of a harbour development plan.

the racks to be adapted for different height and size of boat, with the option to add a fourth tier in the future.

Much thought was also given to transporting boats to and from the racks. Saundersfoot Harbour typically dries at two and a half hours either side of high water with the water level dropping to 300m (984ft) away across a flat beach. Rather than use a negative lift, the harbour opted to use a traditional Linde lift with a maximum 1.5 ton capacity, combined with a specialist boat launching trailer. This is advantageous for boat owners as it means they can leave and return at almost any state of the tide. They simply motor straight onto the boat trailer on the beach when they return. There are also positive effects on the local economy. “As well as fitting in with the harbour’s economic plan, the drystack has played an important part in rejuvenating the village,” Davies confirms. “Boat owners can now come and go without tide and weather restrictions, so they are getting greater use out of their craft and coming into the village more. Plus, we have been able to recruit more staff from the village as we have steadily increased capacity. We now have a waiting list for spaces in the rack.”

Milestone deliveries to North America

Italian manufacturer Ascom continues to make inroads in the North American market and has recently delivered two mobile marine lifts to customers in Oregon, USA.

Port of Toledo Boatyard and Fred Wahl Marine Construction have each commissioned a BHT 660 machine, enabling them to expand their businesses.

Another important milestone is the recent contract received for a 200 ton mobile marine lift for a customer in Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick, Canada. This follows delivery two years ago of an identically sized lift to a customer in Shippagan.

Closer to home, a new 300 ton Ascom unit is scheduled for delivery to a UK boat builder by midyear.

Ascom believes that these important goals were achieved due to its ongoing research into new technical solutions to further enhance performance, reliability and durability of this type of machinery. Close attention to feedback from customers and local agents has been equally important and helped to ensure customer satisfaction.

In addition to offering a wide portfolio of standard

equipment, Ascom offers customised solutions. Two dock-mounted static jib cranes with 10 and 15 ton capacities, recently designed for customers in the UK, fall into this specialist category. One of the main

features of the cranes is a system of four independent lifting points, which ensure maximum safety when handling any type of vessel.

Neptune features on smaller lifts

US company Hoist Liftruck has announced that the mast carriage and fork attachments for its popular Neptune series can be added to nearly any marina forklift.

The first of these hybrid models are the M60 and M75, two lighter options with load capacities of 6,000 and 7,500lbs (2,721 and 3,402kg) respectively at a 96in (244cm) load centre.

The company predicts that its Neptune mast carriage and forks design will appeal to many marina yards. Each set of forks is galvanised, providing excellent corrosion protection. Furthermore, the forks are offered as standard with heavy-wall tubular construction with an extruded rubber fork covering system that gives added protection and is extremely resistant to cuts and tears. Each fork is covered with five bolt-on rubber sections that are easily disconnected and rotated to prevent uneven or premature wear.

The M60 and M75 models are designed to meet the growing demand for a smaller product. The company says that estimates suggest that nearly 75% of the boats lifted at marinas

only require load capacities up to 7,500lbs (3,402kg). The Neptune’s mast can be added onto these smaller boat lifts to allow for

protection against damage.

Entering new markets

Italian company Cimolai

Technology enjoyed a significant boost to its export business in 2016 delivering boat lift and transportation equipment to repeat customers and clients in new markets.

The Caribbean proved to be a particular highlight. Carenantilles, a boatyard in Martinique, French West Indies, purchased a 440 ton hauler to complement an 80 ton Cimolai machine purchased in 2012. A 350 ton hoist was also commissioned for Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour in the BVI.

European customers opted to go large. The Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Quimper Cornouaille, France, took delivery of a 400 ton hoist;

the refit yard of Arpeca in Viareggio, Italy, commissioned a 560 ton machine; and Spanopoulos, a Greek shiprepair business, put a third Cimolai 820 ton mobile hoist to work at its extensive superyacht yard.

Cimolai was also able to make inroads into the New Zealand market. Port Whangarei Marine Centre became a new customer last year with the purchase of a 100 ton mobile boat

hauler and in July this year Cimolai is scheduled to install a 350 ton machine for a new marine servicing facility at Sulphur Point, Tauranga. The unit was ordered by Tauranga City Council.

The company hints at further ongoing projects in New Zealand and Australia and has ambitions for the marina and refit yard market throughout Oceania. Contact Cimolai in Italy at info@cimolaitechnology.com

MARINA PLANNING & DESIGN

Five star marina and nautical base

A new high-tech marina designed to set new standards in the Baltic is being built in Kakumäe, 10km (6mi) from the centre of Estonia’s capital city Tallinn. Offering wet berths for 300 vessels and additional superyachts, the marina will have a well equipped boatyard, heated storage for a further 250 boats and many on-site amenities.

Located in a peaceful upmarket district, renowned for unspoilt forests and stunning views, Haven Kakumäe will be well protected by the surrounding natural bay and a fixed breakwater. There is little water traffic to disrupt the calm or create wake.

According to marina manager Indrek Ilves, the aim has been to develop a unique marine infrastructure project and create a five star marina. “The investment in the port amounts to €21 million and over coming years a further €70 million will be invested in infrastructure and development of

the surrounding area,” he told Marina World. “The marina will be open and ready to host its first guests in May 2017. The heated winter storage will be ready for the end of the season.”

Working with principal contractor BMGS of Tallinn, Estonia-based Top Marine has designed the marina layout and manufactured and supplied the floating pontoon system. Unique coralshaped power pedestals have been

custom designed by Estonian company Keha3.

Haven Kakumäe will offer a mix of 300 berths for vessels up to 30m (98ft) long with a maximum draft of 4m (13ft) in its standard basin. Berths will be available on renewable leases and for visitors. A private 4m (13ft) wide VIP pier is also being built to accommodate up to 16 megayachts in the 40 to 60m (131 to 197ft) range. The pier, which is fully accessible by marina-supplied golf carts, has all utilities, high-speed internet and good security.

All vessels have access to a pumpout dock, fuel dock with four pumps, and a self-service boat washing station.

Associated boatyard facilities will feature the latest equipment, including a 130 tonne boat hoist, forklift and 45 tonne motorised boat trailer. The types and full specifications had not been confirmed when Marina World closed for press in December 2016. Access to

the water is by means of a 25m (82ft) wide slipway.

The dry storage building, which measures 4,300m² (46,285ft²), with a clear head height of 13.5m (44ft) is clean, spacious, bright and fully heated. Vessels up to 130 tons will be lifted and launched using the stacker crane and a special machine for mast lifting. Security will be paramount and access facilitated by a generously sized concrete hardstand. Modern workshops for service operations are incorporated.

The marina has been designed to be the perfect venue for all kinds of sailing regattas, water-based and promenadebased festivals and shows, and wideranging social events. The breakwater serves as an ideal observation stadium for sailing competitions.

With a view to offering a recreation centre for the whole family, Haven Kakumäe also features a range of onsite amenities including restaurants,

shops, sports grounds, sauna, fitness centre and bicycle rental outlet. It has also established an important partnership with the famous and prestigious Tallinn Yacht Club.

Tallinn Yacht Club was founded in 1910 and is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Estonia. It attracts keen sailors of all ages, is modern and comfortable, and is ideally positioned for events with meeting rooms, a seminar room, offices, a dining hall and an open terrace. The club and the marina have joined forces to establish a sailing school that aims to offer an enjoyable and safe on-water experience for junior sailors, encouraging confidence in the water and teaching good navigation skills. Haven Kakumäe will host its own regatta calendar in association with the Club and plans are also in hand to build the first sailing stadium in the area.

During the summer months, a multi-function hall will also

be available for exhibitions, shows, festivals and fairs and will boast a summer events programme. During the marina’s first season, it will act as a host for Tallinn Maritime Days. This traditional annual three-day attraction features concerts, maritime activities and a boat parade and will be held in July. The new function hall will be complemented in 2018 by the marina’s own yacht club, with recreation rooms, saunas, a lounge and restaurant with terrace.

With close proximity to the city centre, a unique natural landscape and stunning views over the old town and bay, the marina will be a magnet for yachtsmen and city residents and will help to further boost the high level of tourists who visit the Estonian capital.

When Superior Group CEO John Hogan took over the role of Global Marina Institute (GMI) chair last November, he freely admitted he had “big shoes to fill”. Outgoing chair, Mick Bettesworth CMM, had steered the GMI since it was founded in 2011 and set it firmly on its path to delivering globally focused industry education.

“As a result of Mick’s leadership, there is a steady growth in GMI endorsed training; both in numbers participating and in the number of countries now embracing the training,” Hogan explained. The quest to enhance GMI as “the pre-eminent brand for education in the industry” continues.

Owned jointly on a not-for-profit basis by British Marine (UK) and the Marina Industries Association (Australia), the GMI helps run the industry’s respected and acknowledged Certified Marina Management (CMM) programme and influenced the decision to merge the UK-based and Australia-based Gold Anchor marina certification schemes into the new Global Gold Anchor industry standard.

Standardisation has been a key focus. “We’ve worked hard on ‘commonality’,” Hogan told Marina World. “All the courses we run are to the same standard and specification no matter where they’re held.”

This philosophy further boosted the professional credibility of the CMM programme, which has also been enhanced to offer a more thorough curriculum and is set to include more industry networking opportunities.

Although the CMM course is the flagship, GMI has reached out to other industry professionals who are not hands-on marina managers and also given marina experts the chance to promote the market to bankers, valuers, fund managers etc., with two successful marina investment seminars.

“We introduced the Certified Marina Professional (CMP) in 2013/14 and it’s gaining in strength,” Hogan acknowledged, fresh from awarding a CMP certificate to a European marina business development manager (see People). “We’re just about to roll out a Straddle Carrier Course as a GMI product and we’ve taken on the responsibility for the industry study tours previously run by the MIA. These

need to be in different geographical markets and we plan to organise one a year,” he added.

With programmes moving slowly into Asia and strengthening in the Middle East, the GMI is shaping up to be a genuinely global offering although Hogan is aware that more air miles are needed. “We need to find an Asian director and we’re looking most particularly for a board member to represent the Americas,” he revealed. “This will make the GMI product available to even more people.”

Course success in Middle East

Sixteen participants successfully completed the Intermediate Marina Management (IMM) course held by the GMI in Abu Dhabi last December. Attendees came from as far afield as Turkey and Hong Kong but the majority arrived from the growing number of UAE and wider regional marinas.

The course covered essential topics for effective marina management, including emergency and environmental management, finance, customer service and marinas of the future. Students conducted an analysis of three Abu Dhabi marinas and presented their findings as part of their assessment.

The occasion was also a suitable platform to present two established marina managers, Evertt Ucat from Al Bandar Marina in Abu Dhabi and Andy Savill from JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort Marina in Dubai, with their CMM awards. These were presented by Farrokh Golchin,

the GMI board member for the Middle East, and MIA CEO Colin Bransgrove.

During 2017, IMI courses under the

GMI banner will be held in Australia, Thailand and the UK, and possibly once again in the UAE.

App goes global

Blue Water App, a product designed to help boat owners reserve a suitable berth in the marina of their choice, is set to gain further ground amongst international marinas due to the backing of a new external investor.

Established in 2013, the app is free for sailors to download and can be used in ports that have a Blue Water App licence.

Available ports are shown on a digital map.

Chris Drent, the Dutch CEO and mastermind behind the app, reported good feedback from visitors to the company’s stand at METSTRADE in Amsterdam in November proving that marina owners as well as yacht owners

iBeacon sensors, positioned to right and left of a marina entrance, can be used to locate any yachts in the immediate area.

are increasingly recognising the added value of the product. The level of interest has undoubtedly been further boosted by the recent introduction of fully integrated iBeacon technology that allows marina owners to locate yachts in the neighbourhood. This new feature provides additional business

opportunities as operators can invite yachts to make a reservation via push notifications.

App licences have been purchased by marinas in numerous European locations and at six marinas in the Middle East, including Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi. Further boost is expected following recent collaborations with marina management companies like Havenstar and Pacsoft to develop an integrated API.

Marinetek welcomes new Dutch and German distributors

Marinetek has further strengthened its presence on the Dutch and German markets with the appointment of two new distributors, JLD International BV (De Goorn, Netherlands) and Ostseedienst GmbH (Kappeln, Germany). Both companies have extensive experience in marine construction and are well established in their specific regions.

JLD International is known for its folding anchors, sheet piling and retention walls and has skilled knowledge in how best to make transitions from land to water. “We see great potential in the Dutch market, especially for refurbishing existing marinas,” says JLD International CEO Jos Karsten. “Our own products combined with the comprehensive range of pontoons and accessories offered by Marinetek are perfect for breathing new life into old marinas.”

Ostseedienst is a second generation marine construction company that has

its own fleet of working barges, tugs and heavy duty marine construction machinery. Managing director, Nils Jaich, believes the new tie-in with Marinetek is a perfect fit. “With Marinetek pontoons and marina engineering skills, we can offer an impressive products and services package for waterfront projects in northern Germany,” he explains. On the basis of the cooperation, several projects were successfully completed in 2016 including Böbs-Werft Marina in Travemunde and Olpenitz Marina in Kappeln.

Kristian Räme, Marinetek vice president international sales, commented: “We are excited to be working with such strong and skilful partners in two countries where there is so much ongoing potential for waterfront developments. We have known both JLD International and Ostseedienst for a long time and are confident that by working together we will have a competitive edge for all marina related projects.”

Waterside security gate

Halo Maritime Defense Systems (HMDS) has introduced Orion Gate (right), a smaller version of its successful Guardian retractable defensive barrier.

The gate is specifically targeted at marinas and other waterfront assets where security, privacy and controlled access are essential. “Orion meets the same high standards of quality and performance demanded by our military customers but with a size, appearance and cost profile more suitable to a nonmilitary asset where privacy and safety are more of a concern than an impacting speed boat,” said James Singer, HMDS managing director GCC/MENA. “Like all of our products, it is

customisable to the particular asset and location,” he added.

Orion, like Guardian, is an accordion style gate that has the unique ability to retract on its own axis, allowing it to open and close at the push of a button. For the first time, HMDS can offer controlled access to any water-exposed asset.

Operation of the gate is controlled by preprogrammed opening and closing modes within the gate’s operating software using touch screens. The commercial off the shelf

components will display the gate status, camera and/ or sensor feeds. Software allows diagnostic checks and provides position, speed and locked or open status to ensure safety and reliability. HMDS was set up in 2008 with a mission to ‘protect vital assets by extending physical security to the waterside.’

In a security-conscious world, both government

assets and commercial/ private assets have a real, immediate and critical need for high levels of protection. Boasting a 15-year design life, Halo is the only barrier system in the world to have been subjected to full and vigorous independent, fully instrumented testing by the US Navy.

Removing sediment in tight spaces

A highly manoeuvrable and easily transportable sediment removal system has been developed by Kansas-based Geoform International to access areas impossible to reach with excavators or hydraulic dredgers.

Named Dino Six, the machine measures 21ft (6.4m) long x 71in (180cm) wide x 64in (162cm) high and weighs just 3,800lbs (1,724kg). It can be lifted in and out of the water easily and loaded onto a trailer, does not disturb the shoreline and leaves no footprint that needs to be repaired.

The system is simple and easy to operate. Sediment is excavated to a maximum working depth of 13ft (4m) and moved to the inlet of the machine’s hydraulic submersible pump by a

direct drive horizontal cutter head. It is then carried away at a rate of over 1,000 galls/ min (4,546 litres/min). The customer can choose either the open faced trash impeller, which comes as standard, or opt for an enclosed impeller for improved discharge pressure.

Although Dino Six is lightweight, it is made of materials and components that are tougher and longer lasting than those of many much larger machines. The floats are constructed of high grade stainless steel. All other parts are finished

Dallas-based Suntex Marinas has selected MyTaskit, the task sharing and business management software solution, as its vendor of choice for boat management and marina service coordination.

Suntex believes that MyTaskit’s open API will ensure seamless integration to its existing systems and will allow a smooth roll-out to its nationwide network of marinas. Suntex CFO, Tom Tipton, said he expects that the technology’s robust platform will improve

operations and customer service across the board.

“MyTaskit brings clarity and improved productivity to every aspect of our business,” Tipton explained. “There is a multitude of activity happening day in and day out at any given marina, from repairs and maintenance to

The Suntex relationship signals even more growth for MyTaskit, which was launched in 2015. MyTaskit founder and CEO Kevin Hutchinson said that he was excited about the new partnership, and that it further confirms the industry’s demand for a technological shift.

“We’re always proud to be affiliated with leaders in the marketplace, and

Suntex is one of the best in the industry. We are excited about the efficiencies MyTaskit is going to bring to their business and service offerings,” he said. “Marinas like Suntex are recognising that there is a better way to operate. Paperwork and traditional business management tools are fast becoming cumbersome and inefficient, and we couldn’t be happier that MyTaskit is able to fulfil that need with a comprehensive and easy-touse software platform.”

Atlantis boosts business

The Atlantis service pedestal, the newest addition to the Maricer product portfolio, further strengthened the order book for 2016 and secured Maricer the prestigious contract for the St Katharine Docks redevelopment (see World News).

The flagship marina in the heart of London will have 154 pedestals from the Atlantis range, incorporating full Smart metering technology, water and LED lighting.

The contract follows on from completed projects elsewhere in London. Developments on the Thames at Battersea were finalised to include Europa pedestals with Smart metering technology, LED illumination for both the pedestal head and base, and fixed pump-out connections.

Europa SOS pedestals with twin illumination positions were also specified.

Bespoke Europa pedestals were also designed and supplied for a flood risk development on the Thames in Berkshire with two-way and four-way electricity and water service pedestals.

Export was also strong. Further supplies to Qatar of Atlantis, Europa and Neptune pedestals have continued, along with expansion throughout Europe. The company has enjoyed

a strong presence in Greece, Poland, Holland, France and Germany.

Maricer has recently expanded its factory facilities, adding an extra 279m² (3,000ft²) of production space to ensure a faster turnaround of products; a design and development area; and a new suite of offices better able to accommodate staff handling UK and overseas projects and supporting the company’s network of agents.

Director, Ted Waring, commented: “This expansion is a reflection of the company’s continued growth in the marina market, which is down to the quality product ranges and services we supply and all the hard work the team at Maricer continue to put in. The launch of the

Miami marina opts for larger lifts

In a reflection of increased demand for boat lifts capable of handling larger and heavier boats, Miami Beach Marina has installed large models to complement its many smaller Golden Boat Lift-equipped slips. The four new installations are custom-built four-post lifts, each with an impressive 40,000lb (18,144kg) capacity.

A typical lift designed for this weight would require eight posts but Golden redesigned the aluminium top beam to sit on four concrete piles and securely carry the load. This made the installation less expensive and also improves overall appearance making it easier to sell the slip.

Miami Beach Marina has 400 slips and offers a variety of mooring packages - from overnight to annual.

This means the lifts need to be adaptable to a wide range of hull and engine configurations. Golden Boat Lifts are renowned for their flexibility in accommodating multiple outboard monohulls, powercats and even sailboats. The custom fourpost lifts will even adjust to support twin engine inboard diesels.

Creating the Smart marina

French company R-marina ended 2016 with a flourish by securing its first installation in the USA, at St Petersburg Marina in Florida, and launching a new monitoring software product called R-smart.

The R-smart enhancement to the R-marina network solution for marinas of all sizes offers added value and real time service for marina managers and boat owners on the same network. It covers Wi-Fi, CCTV, access control, dynamic display

screens, water and electricity metering, smart lighting, and more. Managing everything from a single interface provides a 360° view of the marina.

When developing the new software, R-marina was guided by the successful

elements of its baseline product, which was launched nearly four years ago and is now in use in over 40 marinas in France and the UK. The key factors are ease of use, modularity, reliability and real time information. Every user, depending on profile, benefits from a ready to use interface with a customised general dashboard and authorised items.

Customising the product is a simple task for the marina manager or technical director who ‘designs’ the marina with drag and drop technology on a 3D vectorised map. Clicking on the map gives access to details of all on-site equipment enabling the user to be aware of everything that is happening in the

marina via a single interface. A customised notification system sends critical alerts via email or SMS.

By offering the manager a real time view of marina occupancy and real time control, the software helps to maximise turnover and minimise time taken accessing relevant data. R-smart relies on the latest technologies, such as flexible 3D mapping engine, Internet of Things and http API. A time series database allows the manager to view the marina as it was six months or two years ago and this, says R-marina, opens the doors to Big Data – and the next product release.

Mobile fuel management

Within days of launching a redesign of its websites www.scribblesoftware.com and www.marinaoffice.net, Scribble Software has launched marinaGO POS v2, its newest mobile point-of-sale app with integrated fuel management. Built for the iOS and Android platforms, the marinaGO point-of-sale is claimed to be the first native mobile app in the industry to offer real-time integrated fuel management and is available for the iPhone, iPad, iPod and Android devices.

Described as the ‘mobile dockhand’, marinaGO POS frees marina operators from traditional countertop point-of-sale stations and fuel consoles by offering completely wireless integrated fuel dispenser control and sales register capabilities in the palm of the hand while out on the fuel dock. The app users will be able to easily control fuel dispensers, complete fuel transactions and tender any other type of sale with the use of merchant-supported payment methods including credit cards. A unique feature for the marina industry includes the ability to include any sale, including fuel transactions, on internal ticket charges.

“The marinaGO POS fuel management app will revolutionise the marina

industry,” says Vance Young, director of technology for Scribble Software. “Marina staff are now able to devote their attention to providing better service at the fuel dock by offering start to finish fuelling activity without leaving the customer’s side.”

The marinaGO POS app features a mobile sales register and integrated fuel management. It supports most fuel dispenser brands and types (gasoline/petrol, diesel, blended and other fuel types) and completes sales with cash, cheque and credit card payments. The product also supports mobile magnetic card readers (MSR) and synchronises sales to back office accounting.

The app can be downloaded in the iOS iTunes app store or the Google Play app store.

Taking control of ‘daily inspections’

High tech learning and simulation training company Mymic Training Technologies has released a new smartphone app designed to help marinas and boatyards with equipment and facility inspections. Electronic Marine Equipment Checklist or eMEC is available on both Google Play and iTunes. Designed to help marinas complete OSHA required daily inspections for forklifts and travel lifts, eMEC allows the user to scan a barcode, complete a machine-specific safety check and upload the record to cloud storage for retrieval at a later date as needed.

Mymic director of marina safety programmes, Robert Smith, explained: “Our goal is to help marinas and boatyards enhance safety programmes and OSHA compliance by leveraging technology. eMEC is a perfect tool to quickly and easily conduct the required OSHA daily inspection and create the records needed.”

Rick Chapman, general manager at The Port of Sunnyside Club in Stillwater,

Minnesota, one of the first to adopt the app, said it has made life much easier. “In the past I struggled with my travel lift and forklift operators to get them to fill out and maintain our daily, OSHA required, inspection log. Once I had the app installed on their smart phones, they took ownership of the daily inspections immediately and I can check to make sure the inspections have been submitted without

ever leaving my desk,” he noted.

The company has plans to continue expanding its marina safety training programme in the near future, adding new on-site instructor training such as the OSHA 10 course and CPR training.

PEOPLE

The ICOMIA World Marinas Conference in Amsterdam (17th19th November 2016) provided the ideal backdrop to present two Global Marina Institute (GMI) certificates. Michelle Hitchcock of MDL Marinas, officially became a Certified Marina Professional (CMP) and Can Akaltan became a Certified Marina Manager (CMM).

The CMP programme was launched in 2012 to recognise the skills and experience of those working in the marina sector, but not directly managing marinas. Hitchcock, the first woman to be accredited to date, has worked at MDL Marinas in a variety of roles. She is now head of business development and is responsible for the company’s training development and delivery, the monitoring of customer service and quality, and overseeing all operational aspects of business systems at marinas in the UK, France, Italy and Spain.

Upon receiving her certificate, she commented: “I am honoured and proud to be awarded my CMP accreditation by the GMI. This is a major highlight of my career, made more special as the presentation is in front of an audience of my peers at the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference.”

Lesley Robinson, managing director of MDL Marinas, added: “We pride ourselves on the exceptional workforce that we have at MDL and it’s fantastic to see Michelle being recognised as a leading marina professional globally. She has worked very hard since she joined the company in 1999 and should also be very proud of becoming the first female to receive the award.”

Can Akaltan left a successful career as a yacht captain to join Cesme

Marina in Izmir, Turkey as marina manager. He has since been promoted to the position of general manager. He was delighted to receive his CMM award. “I feel privileged to be awarded the only internationally recognised certificate in the marina industry for marina professionals,” he said. “It is also a great pleasure to become part of a very special group of industry pioneers.”

John Hogan, newly elected chairman of the GMI, added: “It is good to have our first female CMP, particularly as she is from Europe, to add to those marina professionals already certified in Australia and Asia. I am hopeful that Michelle will pave the way for others who work in the industry to look to CMP as a way of developing and recognising their talents. It is also good to see another CMM recognised in Turkey.”

The GMI currently has 130 active CMMs and CMPs around the globe and looks to continue this growth into 2017. British Marine contributes to this by running a series of GMI marina management courses in locations across the UK and Europe. Oscar Siches

Oscar Siches, partner/manager of Pantalan del Mediterraneo and Moll Vell in Mallorca, has left the company to further develop his marina consultancy business and focus on special projects.

“I believe that there is a big void in consulting on a small scale and for certain topics,” he told Marina World. “Many marina developers need advice on specific subjects and cannot afford a full consultancy job. I want to give these people the solutions they need, especially in design, environment, operations and marina-city interaction. These are the four major factors that determine a marina’s success in today’s marketplace.”
