Greetings to All ADOBE Members and Friends
On October 15, 2026, Ms. Terri Klucar, former Pinal County Sign Enforcement Officer, will be the featured presenter at ADOBE’s first Community Meeting of the 2026–27 season. Terri will clarify the Pinal County Sign Code and explain the nuances of the regulations governing signs in our community. As we travel throughout Gold Canyon, we see signs along many of the roads we use every day. While these signs may serve a purpose, not all of them necessarily comply with county regulations. Join us for this informative presentation and learn more about the signs we see in Gold Canyon, including which signs are permitted and which may violate county code. Many of us have heard that water rates may increase, as the Arizona Water Company and Liberty Utilities have requested approval from the Arizona Corporation Commission for substantial rate increases. To help residents better understand what happens when such an increase is requested, ADOBE has invited Mr. Kevin Thompson, Chairman of the Arizona Corporation Commission, to speak at our November 19, 2026, Community Meeting. The review and approval process is extensive, and our speaker will explain it in clear, understandable terms so attendees can better understand how water rate decisions are made. Both Community Meetings will be held at the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel, with social time beginning at 6:15 p.m. and the meetings starting at 7:00 p.m. I realize this topic has been hijacked by politics; my words are not. After years of warnings from artificial intelligence experts (including Musk, 2014), their alerts are finally being heard. One is AI’s growing ability to interact with one another and operate with increasingly nonhuman involvement. How this happens, scientists admit they don’t know. Sophisticated networks of escaped bots (AI found a way to go around human blocks) are already being used for increased scams, fraud, misinformation, and other malicious activities targeting our phones, computers, financial accounts, and personal information. Experts are also concerned about data centers and their development since data centers will be, according to the experts, one of the places where AI systems can go rogue. ADOBE asks, therefore, where is the wisdom in expanding the very infrastructure that enables them. “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” – Romans 1:22, comes to mind. On one hand, there are legitimate calls for caution, oversight, and responsible development. On the other, Washington views leadership in artificial intelligence as a matter of economic and national security, particularly in the technological competition between the United States and China. ADOBE suggests the question should not simply be whether we build more data centers or develop more powerful AI, but how we pursue technological leadership while establishing effective safeguards against the risks these systems may create. We must remain vigilant and pay close attention to this issue, as its potential consequences are far too serious to ignore. In my view, its implications could ultimately have a profound and detrimental impact on all of humankind, reaching well beyond Gold Canyon and affecting communities worldwide. Glenn A. WITCH’S BROOM
AN ARIZONA MYSTERY SOLVED In 2018 we published an article about Witch’s Broom here in Gold Canyon. There have been some new developments which we would like to share with you. Witch’s Broom is an abnormal growth that occurs on many southwestern plants, especially the Blue Palo Verde. It appears the tree has grown large, dense bushes on the tips of a few limbs. Plants suffering from the condition often lose vigor and look very unsightly. It is often mistaken for mistletoe, a parasitic plant, but witch’s broom is something else entirely and therein lay the mystery. In 1969, Dr. Rupert Streets first reported in his comprehensive ‘The Diagnosis of Plant Diseases’ that Eriophyid Mite were the cause of the disease. Researchers now know that the mite is the vector of witch’s broom, not the direct cause. In other words, the mite was passing something to the tree during its feeding activity. The University of Arizona’s researchers have shown that a previously unknown plant virus in the genus Emaravirus infects paloverde trees. The University has renamed the disease Palo Verde Broom Virus (PVBV). There is no known cure for PVBV. MANAGEMENT TIPS: Plants that are over managed by heavy watering and fertilizing are more susceptible to the disease. Most of our desert trees thrive best under a program of ‘benign neglect’. Witch’s broom usually appears on new growth on the tips of branches while mistletoe usually shows up on more mature branches. Witch’s broom, like mistletoe, can be cut out of the tree, but our experience is that they both return. Prune plants without any broom symptoms first, as it is likely that the disease can be transmitted by contaminated pruning tools. When you trim out the infected branches, sterilize the tools by dipping in a 10% bleach solution between cuts.

The bad news is that we have discovered witch’s broom in Gold Canyon on a variety of species of plants, not just the Blue Palo Verde. Oleanders, Bougainvillea, and Bottle Brush are some examples. The photo here is an extremely infected Texas Sage.

REAL ESTATE FOR YOU LORI BLANK ASSOCIATE BROKER LORI BLANK & ASSOCIATES, LLC
A Special Message from Lori Blank A New Chapter for Lori Blank & Associates | For many years, I have had the privilege of sharing real estate information with you on these pages. This month, however, I’d like to share something much more personal. Gold Canyon has been more than the place where I built a real estate company. It has been my community, my home, and an important part of my life for many years. Through real estate, I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people—many of whom began as clients and became friends. I have watched neighborhoods grow, families arrive, homes change hands, and this very special corner of Arizona become the community we know and love today. When I founded Lori Blank & Associates, my goal was never simply to create another real estate company. I wanted to build a company based on relationships, integrity, professionalism and genuine care for the people we serve. Over the years, that little company grew into something I am incredibly proud of—a family of talented agents and brokers who share those same values and who truly care about this community. As the years passed, I knew there would eventually come a time for me to step away from the responsibility of owning and leading the company. What mattered most to me was not simply when I would do it, but who I could trust to carry it forward. That person is Dawn Carroll—Dawn has been an important part of Lori Blank & Associates for many years, and I have had the opportunity to watch her grow as a real estate professional, a broker and a leader. She understands what this company has always stood for, but she also has the energy, vision and determination to take it into the future. Most importantly to me, Dawn understands that LBA is about people. It is about the clients who trust us with one of the most important decisions of their lives. It is about the agents and brokers who have made this company what it is. And it is about being part of the Gold Canyon community rather than simply doing business here. That is why I was able to step away knowing that what I built was in very capable hands. Dawn had been the owner of Lori Blank & Associates for the past 3 years now and while my role has changed, my pride in this company certainly has not. I am enormously proud of what our LBA family has accomplished, and I am excited to see where Dawn leads them next. Beginning next month, Dawn will also take over this page. You’ll hear from her about real estate, our community, the changing market and, knowing Dawn, probably a few other things along the way. So this isn’t really goodbye. It is simply the beginning of a new chapter. To everyone who has trusted me, worked with me, supported our company, stopped me in Bashas’ to say hello, or simply followed along over the years — thank you. You helped make a dream into a life and a business into a family. And Dawn, I couldn’t be happier to pass the torch to you, Take good care of it.

CREATING CABOCHONS By Brenda Potts While on a hike in Arizona, Mattie and Phil Gadd found a unique rock. They took it to the lapidary shop, cut it, polished it; and discovered beauty in a rock that ignited a passion. Gaddabout Rocks Creations began in 2008. Today their personal collection of gemstones is impressive, supplemented by a worldwide network of sellers. Their combined artistry turns a rock into unique, beautiful, one-of-a kind jewelry. Phil begins the process by choosing only the finest natural gemstone to create cabochons. The term comes from the French word meaning head or knob. A cabochon is a gemstone that is polished and shaped into a smooth, rounded convex dome with a flat or slightly curved back. “Each one is cut, shaped and polished by hand to bring out its natural beauty.” Phil explains. Mattie continues the process with wire wrapping, an ancient jewelry-making technique that bends, twists and wraps wire around the cabochon. Her designs enhance the individual cabochons’ features, thereby creating a truly unique piece of jewelry. A variety of tools are needed to manipulate the wire to create consistent intricate loops, bends and spirals. Learning to manipulate the metal takes practice and skill. Each wire wrapping design must secure the cabochon by creating a cage or frame around the stone without drilling holes. Whether it is malleable craft wire used by beginners or sterling silver and gold-filled wires used by professionals, years of practice are required to achieve the look of fine artistry. Gaddabout Rock Creations was inspired by finding the beauty in a rock. Their love of natural gemstones continues with every hike. Mattie jokes that, “To this day while hiking we can’t keep our eyes off the ground.” Mattie and Phil display and sell their cabochon creations at a variety of fine art shows, including those presented by the Artists of the Superstitions (AOTS). Mattie serves as vice president of AOTS, a juried fine art group of artists in the Superstition Mountain area.

FINANCIAL FOCUS® MATTRUPPERT Feeling financially fulfilled means so much more than just the number in your bank account. It’s about being able to take your family out to dinner without calculating whether you can afford it. It means sleeping soundly on a Sunday night, knowing that if the water heater gives out tomorrow, you can handle it. And it’s saying yes to a vacation because you planned ahead and the money is there. In short, financial fulfillment is the feeling that your money is supporting the life you want. Yet true fulfillment is surprisingly rare. Only 16% of Americans are financially fulfilled, according to a 2026 study by Edward Jones and Gallup, “Money and Meaning: Understanding Financial Fulfillment.” Those at the other end of the spectrum, the financially stressed (32%), often say that money regularly controls their daily decisions. Most Americans (51%), however, fall in the middle — the financially conflicted. They manage to get by but often carry a persistent undercurrent of worry. Notably, where you land on this spectrum has less to do with your income than you might expect. More than half of households earning $175,000 or more are still financially conflicted. BUILDING THE FOUNDATION So, the question becomes, “What do financially fulfilled people do differently?” Simply put, they tend to have foundational planning structures in place. Five behaviors show up consistently among the financially fulfilled, and they’re simple steps you can take, too.
WHAT DOES FINANCIAL FULFILLMENT ACTUALLY FEEL LIKE? easily accessible account. When you know you can handle the unexpected, you stop bracing for it, and lower stress gives you a higher quality of life. Create a financial plan for retirement (91% of financially fulfilled have one). It’s hard to feel in control if you don’t know where you’re going. A retirement plan puts a real number on what you’ll need and lays out a clear path to get there, with built-in protection against life’s unexpected curveballs. Save intentionally for major milestones (87% of financially fulfilled do). A home renovation, a new vehicle or a child’s education don’t have to feel disruptive. Setting money aside deliberately for the milestones you anticipate means you can say yes without scrambling. Put an estate plan in place (66% of financially fulfilled have). Estate plans are not just for the wealthy. A will and basic estate plan help ensure what you’ve worked for still reflects your wishes after you’re gone. Work with a financial advisor (60% of financially fulfilled who sought any guidance have used an advisor in the past year). The internet is great, but real guidance comes from a credentialed person who knows you and your family and what you want your money to do for you. Knowing that your money is working toward the life you want doesn’t happen by accident. Feeling financially fulfilled is worth the effort and may be more achievable than you realize.
Build an emergency fund (98% of fulfilled have this). Aim for saving three to six months of living expenses in a liquid, This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. — Edward Jones, Member SIPC.

IN THE KITCHEN
WITH MARSHA MARSHADORRIS
SALTED CARAMEL
APPLE PIE BARS
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Line the bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang on all sides. Set aside. Make the streusel first: In a medium bowl, whisk together the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and flour. Cut in the chilled butter with a pastry blender or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Place in refrigerator. CRUST: In a medium bowl, stir together the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt. Add the flour and mix until everything is combined. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly browned around the edges. While crust bakes, prepare the filling. APPLE FILLING: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg, stirring until all of the apples are evenly coated. Set aside. After you remove the crust from the oven, increase the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Pour the apple filling on top of the warm crust and spread/ press into an even layer. It will look like there are too many apple slices, so layer them tightly and press them down to fit. Sprinkle the cold streusel evenly on top. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the streusel is golden brown.
These are made with a shortbread crust, apple filling, streusel topping, a caramel drizzle and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt!
STREUSEL:
• ½ cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats • 1/3 cup packed light or dark brown sugar • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon • ¼ cup all-purpose flour • ¼ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed • SHORTBREAD CRUST: • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted • ¼ cup granulated sugar • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • ¼ tsp salt • 1 cup + 1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour
APPLE FILLING:
• 2 large apples (or 3 if small), one Honeycrisp and one Granny Smith, peeled and thinly sliced (about 2.5 cups, ¼ - inch thick slices • 2 Tblsp all-purpose flour • 2 Tblsp granulated sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
Remove from the oven and allow the bars to cool for at least 20 minutes at room temperature, then transfer to the refrigerator and chill for at least 2 hours. Lift bars out of the pan by gripping the parchment paper overhang; transfer to a cutting board and cut into squares. Drizzle caramel sauce on top and sprinkle with flaky sea salt, if using. These apple pie bars can be enjoyed warm, cold or at room temperature. Store covered tightly in the refrigerator for 3 days. You can freeze the bars (without caramel sauce) for up to 3 months in an air-tight container with parchment paper between layers. Thaw overnight in refrigerator, then warm them up to your liking and drizzle with salted caramel sauce. This recipe can be doubled and baked in a 9x13-inch pan, pre-bake the crust for 18 minutes, then extend the baking time to 45-55 minutes. Recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction
TOPPING:
• Store bought or homemade salted caramel sauce. Optional: flakey sea salt

LIVE IT WELL SUESCHAFFER
OWNER LIVE IT WELL PLACE
BECOMING GROUNDED There are seasons when life feels steady and beautifully aligned, and then there are seasons when the wind picks up without warning. You know, when plans suddenly shift, strong emotions stir, and the familiar becomes uncertain. In those moments, grounding becomes more than an idea. It becomes a steadying practice, a quiet strength, a source of balance, and a deep-rooted reminder of who you are. To be grounded is to build strength in small, everyday ways. It is choosing to begin your morning with one intentional breath instead of rushing into the day. It is stepping outside for five minutes to feel the earth beneath your feet. It is moving your body not to achieve something, but to reconnect with it. Strength grows when you show up for yourself consistently, even in tiny ways. When life gets windy, these small acts become roots, familiar practices that help you remain steady. Becoming grounded is also about balance. Stability is not the absence of movement; it is the ability to adjust without losing your center. You can practice balance by checking in with yourself throughout the day: asking what you need, noticing where your energy is going, and adjusting without guilt. When you give yourself permission to respond to your own needs, you create a rhythm that steadies you no matter what the day brings. Values are the internal compass that keep you aligned. When you feel pulled in too many directions, return to what matters most. Write down the three values you want to live by this fall season. Let them guide your decisions, your boundaries, and your pace. When your choices reflect your values, you feel anchored, even in chaos. You stop drifting and start living with intention.
Grounding also grows through the routines we return to. Not rigid schedules or another list of things we must accomplish, but small practices that give our days a familiar rhythm. Maybe it is a morning cup of coffee before the world gets noisy, a regular class that keeps your body moving, an evening walk, ten quiet minutes, or calling someone you love every Sunday. These ordinary routines become touchstones. We may barely notice them when life is calm, but when life becomes uncertain, they give us something familiar to come home to. Nourishment is part of being grounded too, and it extends far beyond food. It is what we allow into our minds, relationships, and environment. It can mean surrounding yourself with people who lift you, creating a space that feels like exhaling, or resting before exhaustion demands it. Listening to your body’s whispers instead of waiting for it to shout builds a foundation that supports every other part of your life. Movement is another form of grounding, not because it keeps you busy, but because it keeps you connected. You can practice grounding through movement by stretching when you feel tense, walking when your thoughts feel tangled, or simply placing your hand over your heart when you need to return to yourself. Movement brings you back into the present moment, where clarity lives. And then there is community — the people who steady you when you wobble, who remind you of your strength when you forget, and who stand with you when the wind picks up. Reach out to someone you trust, share an honest moment, or simply allow yourself to be supported. Community expands your root system. When you are connected to others, you don’t weather storms alone. When life feels unsettled, stop and ask yourself: What will steady me right now? Maybe you need to breathe. Maybe you need to move. Maybe you need nourishment, rest, a familiar routine, or another person. You don’t have to fix everything. Choose one thing that helps you reconnect and begin there. Becoming grounded doesn’t mean life stops moving or that the wind never blows. It means knowing what helps you find your center when it does. Trust the values that guide you, the routines that steady you, the movement that reconnects you, the nourishment that sustains you, and the people who remind you that you don’t have to weather every storm alone. Your roots don’t keep you from moving; they give you the strength to bend, adjust, and keep growing.

MENOPAUSE:
UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHANGING BODY
Every woman who goes through middle age will experience menopause. For some, this transitional time is relatively easy; for many others, “the change” is marked by physical and psychological challenges that may leave them frustrated and physically drained. As with any health issue, the more a woman understands the process of menopause, the better she will be able to deal with it. Medically speaking, menopause is said to be the stage of life when no menstrual periods have occurred for a period of one year. This cessation of menses is due to decreasing ovarian function. In the United States, the average age is 51 years old; however, it can happen any time from your 30s to your mid-50s or later. It’s important to understand that this process is not a disease; it’s a normal part of a woman’s life. But just as puberty can be a scary and confusing time for young girls, the entrance to this stage of adulthood can leave us wondering why our bodies appear to be “rebelling” against us or even questioning our own sanity! Our lifestyles can also be a contributing factor in the severity of menopausal symptoms: stress, poor diet, and lack of good exercise habits can often exacerbate the problems we encounter. Signs and symptoms For some, the symptoms associated with the changing levels of estrogen and progesterone in their bodies may be relatively mild. For others, however, the physical symptoms can be moderate to severe and may include hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, and atrophic vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina due to thinning and shrinking tissues and a decrease in lubrication) which can cause burning, itching, or bleeding. Weight
gain and changes in blood pressure can also accompany menopause. Many women may also find themselves going through psychological changes, as well. Fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, memory loss, mood swings, irritability, and an inability to concentrate are common. Treatment While this is normal, for many women it’s difficult to deal with the symptoms as their bodies adjust to the changes they are going through. The good news is that there are things we can do—often through natural therapies—that can help. If you are experiencing some of the symptoms listed above, you may want to seek medical help in coping with the problems. Many women who seek medical help for their symptoms (particularly for anxiety and depression) may find that their doctors are quick to prescribe drugs such as antidepressants or sleeping pills that simply mask their symptoms and can lead to dependency or unwanted side effects. This treatment can be appropriate at times, but it is often possible to approach the root causes of the symptoms in natural ways that are ultimately more effective.
In my practice the first step, as always, would be a thorough medical history. It’s important to determine whether the reported symptoms are really menopause-related or if there are other medical conditions that need to be taken into account as part of the treatment program. Laboratory tests can be very helpful. A salivary hormone evaluation, for example, would include testing levels of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, and the ratio of progesterone to estradiol. These tests can help the doctor develop an individualized protocol for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), if needed. There are a number of other things women can do to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause and head off potential post-menopausal problems like osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. A proper diet, a good exercise regimen, and dietary supplements and vitamins all should be part of an overall wellness program. It’s good to explore both the physical and mental aspects of menopause. For years we may have given ourselves to the nurture and care of others. This change of life calls us to embrace ourselves with kindness and love by taking time for ourselves. October 2026 | 21
