Hi and welcome to the first issue of Supernal Magazine Australia.

t’s been an amazing and very humbling journey to get to this first issue and the plans for the future are as bright and as varied as the topics we’ll be covering and the information we hope to share with our readers, and it’s FREE! Why Supernal and what makes us different?

Whilst sitting down with the team and planning Supernal’s direction as a magazine, many words came up relating to giving people a voice, passion, ethics, life, awakening, non-judgemental, community, journey and so on. However, in the end, it came back to two very powerful words – I Care!

Our dream is to create a unique magazine and to do that and make it free

It wasn’t that I care; I do of course, it’s that the team care! They care about helping everyday people to understand a variety of topics with a nonjudgemental platform that is designed to create discussion amongst the community at large with a view to expanding people’s awareness.

Yet there’s more of course. Supernal is designed to give people a way to have a voice in the media which is sometimes shunned by main stream media. I’ve been caught in that trap too. As soon as you mention spiritual, medium or similar, they simply won’t deal with you. Unless of course, it’s to accuse you of being a charlatan or similar. In some published media, people have to pay to have their say which I find unethical in many respects, and again I have been on the receiving end of being asked to pay to have an editorial meaning it is really advertorial.

We see Supernal Magazine sitting just below mainstream media and above purely spiritual magazines.

There’s a niche here for story telling that’s simply amazing!

From our point of view, we are very happy for people to have their say, as long as it doesn’t put down others, is educational based and doesn’t tell others what they can and can’t do. It’s not a hard brief, yet I feel it could be tricky to manage at times, especially when people’s passions are involved.

David Icke – Banned from Oz!

David Icke’s visa was cancelled preventing his tour of Australia.

Apparently, a small group within the government lobbied to refuse Mr Icke entry, due to his very different views on the activities of global powers.

This seems to be acceptable as Australia doesn’t have a bill of rights that defines and protects free speech unlike most other western democracies.

Therefore, free speech is not a right that is protected under our constitution and the only social freedom that is guaranteed is religion.

Do I feel protected? Do I feel happy that my choices are taken away from me for my own good? Actually NO! I have a brain; I have the ability to discern for myself what sits well and what does not. What do you think?

My name is Brooklyn and I’ve owned and operated my private practice in Psychology for nearly 20 years. Starting the business was very exciting and then as time went on, I began to feel resistance. That heavy feeling began to creep into each day and it grew until one day I knew that something needed to change; that I needed to change.

I can remember the moment as if it were yesterday. One night, I was in bed writing a post for my Facebook group and realised that I was unfulfilled with the business.

It was in that instant that another realisation struck me: That unfulfilled feeling was because I wasn’t working with my ideal client, I was working ridiculous hours, I was in debt because I felt guilty chasing money that people owed me so I’d just avoid it and the work I was doing was no longer fuelling my passion. In other words, I was out of alignment with the business. And in that moment of realisation, everything became abundantly obvious as to what needed to change and making the changes was so much easier than I’d imagined.

Now I run not one but two thriving businesses, doing what I love and having the lifestyle that I used to fantasise about but never believed was possible for someone like me. And now I’m driven to helping business owners learn how to use the same tools that I did, so that they too can create changes and feel

The idea of alignment comes from a family of principles and laws that are colloquially referred to as the Law of Attraction (LOA). Just hearing the term LOA can trigger a reaction in some people of ‘it’s all woo-woo‘, ‘it’s airy fairy’, ‘it doesn’t work’, ‘it’s snake oil and potions’, but the reality is that 90 percent of LOA is based in the social sciences, like Psychology. Many of tools and processes have been verified in Psychology as being evidenced based and we know therefore that they work, are effective and that they are powerful”.

There is a general formula for using LOA in business and while it varies from person to person, it often looks like this:

Set your intention Your intention for the business is the overall meaning or purpose you have for being in business. It’s your ‘what I do and why I do it’.

Set your goal You goal is the destination that you are working toward. We need to have

Psychology this because in order for the business to be successful, it’s necessary to track metrics.

Believe Often over-looked in business is the concept of belief but, if you think about it, it makes a world of sense.

How can a salesperson be successful selling a program, product or service that they don’t believe in? What would that person’s sales figures be like compared to those of someone that does fully believe in the product they are selling?

Our beliefs are almost entirely subconscious, sitting beneath the water level with the tip of the iceberg representing conscious thought. Beliefs are powerful because without us being aware in the moment, they govern how we think, feel and behave in business.

Take aligned action

Trust in the process For LOA newbies and even the more experienced of us, this is perhaps one of the most difficult and challenging aspects of LOA to embrace.

As entrepreneurs, the business is our baby and we connect to it emotionally. We find ourselves wearing many different hats and needing to control so many moving parts. But it’s this desire to hang on that hinders our growth, hinders our sales and hinders our happiness.

Receive Think about buying something online. Maybe I buy a book from Amazon. I find the book, add it to the cart, process my payment and then I wait. I trust that the book will arrive and it does.

This is the same approach that we use when applying LOA to the business.

One of the fundamental processes to receiving in LOA is the act of expressing gratitude for things that come our way. Even if we only have one person turn up at the webinar, we need to express gratitude. Maybe you made just one sale, express gratitude for that too. I’ll tell you why over coming articles.

In LOA, the action-taking component accounts for about 20% of the work we do, with the balance being our internal work.

For example, we know that if we can change our thinking, we can change our feeling and from that place, we take less action simply because the action we are taking is much more focussed now. There’s less white noise.

I view it as a musical jam on the twelve bar blues, where each of the twelve signs is given a unique voice and rhythm. Further, I have supplemented the astrological material with quotations from spiritual masters, creative artists and other historically influential figures to add soul, depth, wit and wisdom to the material. I intend it to be stimulating and enjoyable, showing that astrology is an intellectually valid and fruitful subject for self-enquiry and one that deserves serious and further study.

Yet behind the bravado of your apparent confidence and self-belief, lurks a person who is plagued by selfdoubt and fear of failure. Throw in a car chase with lots of thrills and spills and the rest of us can settle back and enjoy the show. One thing’s for sure, with Aries around, life is never dull or boring. It is an action movie where winner takes all and there are no second chances!

In the beginning, a frequency beamed through the cosmos and portals of consciousness to Earth. It came from Source Energy and when it reached our shores of 3rd dimensional density, as we moved through the ages, we began to speak of it as ‘Time’.

The word time is an anagram of emit. The Divine Frequency is emitted to earth and for eons we have successfully distorted, misunderstood and misused it.

Perfect really, as we came here to experience physical life for a very short, hard and heavy space of ‘time’ on this planet. Our world contains exactly the right combination of gases to develop into human form. The Mayans say we are cousins to the trees and trees hold within them the timelessness, enchantment and receptivity of the Wizard, hence the Wisdom of the ages is seen within the Tree of Life.

Calendars of time exist the world over and as we evolve, they revolve and align. Time-ship Earth awakens and everything rumbles, quakes and shifts including us, and, on the 28th to 29th of May 2018, an entry point into a new paradigm opened. We may able to breathe the air, but it’s taking a while to put ourselves back together and many have still to enter the doorway before it closes, let alone begin to realise and reassemble the self.

2019 is the 3rd year of a new cycle. Time is not changing but we are. The Garden of Need is on the way to returning to Eden and it is a ‘time’ of karmic replay.

From the 18th March 2019, energy and mindfulness are key; contemplate, set intention and allow. We are like a ball of string, unravelling in order to be woven into the pattern of the universal web of life. Travelling with the magnetic tone of purpose, sowing seeds of new vision in order to unify and attract and navigate our way under the influence of powerful synchronicity and self- awareness. Allow everything and everyone you encounter during these coming weeks to be seen in neither positive or negative mode. Instead allow a polarity from conception to fruition to be realised in all areas of your life, intuitively balancing the ‘see saw’ effect.

he moon shines through the half-shaded window like a headtorch. The cold is beyond cold, my shivering is getting worse as I wonder how much longer I can stay here. I keep thinking I’m good to go but then I feel my stomach rumbling and know it’s not over, this is getting ridiculous! Here I am on a frozen squatty toilet in the back room of a Nepalese guesthouse, its ceramic base has iced over making it impossible to stay balanced and the wall with the support handle is sadly out of reach. The blue plastic barrel of flush water next to me is solid ice and I have six sheets of toilet paper left. This is the fifth time I have met this toilet tonight as my stomach has been off for the last six days and I haven’t eaten much food for the last seven.

I am in the closest village to Mt Everest base camp: Gorakshep. This is meant to be my euphoric night after reaching base camp the afternoon before but celebration is far from my thoughts.

In late 2012 a mate of mine, a fellow photographer, suggested we should do something amazing before we both turn 50. We decided it should have these three elements: 1. Be photographically amazing, 2. Must be physically challenging and 3. Must not cost the earth as we both were on a budget. Not long after that he rang me and suggested the Mt Everest

Base Camp trek. We did initial costings, google research and it just seemed perfect. We were both excited as it ticked all of the boxes. Just by chance my friend had a contact at World Expeditions in Melbourne who are the leaders in trekking in Nepal and they would give us a good discount if we went with them, easy decision, done. Early 2014 seemed best so the countdown was on. We started our training which involved climbing up hills, mountains and lots of stairs, stairs and more stairs.

My wife suggested I should use the trek to raise some money for something worthy. I had never really thought of doing this as I am not great at asking people to donate money but she convinced me people would support me doing something amazing like the EBC trek. We were throwing charity names around and it took a while for us to realise we had the most obvious one sitting right in front of us. Our eldest son Dylan has a disease called CMT, why not raise funds for that? WOW a lightbulb moment, it was perfect.

The only hesitation was that none of us, Dylan included, had ever really told people he had CMT so this would be news to even some close friends.

The training continued as we did research on online fundraising and finally set up the event. We used a site called Pozible and they suggest you offer rewards to entice people to donate. It was obvious I should do something with the photos I take over there. It was decided that I would create a coffee-table book of the trip. We got pricing

and worked out some other offers and came up with the figure of $2,500 to raise to cover costs and still have a decent amount to give to the Australian CMT Association. We thought of the name Walk With Me for the book and campaign. CMT is a degeneration of peripheral nerves, especially the hands and feet. Although Dylan can walk he would never be able to do the EBC trek with me so this book was to be his version of the trek, from the comfort of his couch.

Through 2013 we stepped up our training, doing countless mornings at the 1000 steps in Dandenong doing not just the steps but also the 7km loop over the mountain 2-3 times in a session. The fitness was getting better

Gorakshep & Kala Patthar and the Pozible campaign was up and going. It still blows me away when I think about the support that was given to this campaign. Friends, family, business associates and strangers all jumped on. The total went higher and higher reaching the $2,500 in a few weeks.

Just before we flew out, the total was up over $7000! You know you are doing something right in this world when you ring the CMT Association and talk to the director and he breaks down in tears when you tell him what you are doing for them. They are non-government funded so they rely on grants to keep them going. They are a vital education and support source for CMT suffers so what I was doing felt like the only thing to do. CMT is not life-threatening, so sadly gets very little media coverage or funding.

Sitting on the plane to Kathmandu I started feeling the nerves and pressure of now not only having to complete the trek but also produce a full colour amazing photobook as 70+ supporters were now entitled to one. After a few days in Kathmandu we boarded the tiny plane to Lukla which has the most dangerous airport in the world. Me being an aeroplane nut, landing there was a tick off the bucket list. The plane landed, the cheers of all passengers filled the aircraft, we were safe and at the starting point for the trek. We were ready. Lukla at an altitude of 2840 metres makes you feel weird, dizzy and light headed until you acclimatise. The days are long, the hills ridiculous at times and the lack of oxygen rather annoying. Two days in we reached the main town of Namche Bazaar and a guesthouse stay. Most other nights are spent in tents in smaller villages. We had an acclimatization rest day here (which involves climbing anyway) because the way to beat AMS

I was going okay but not feeling great most days but still having to concentrate and take amazing photos where I could. I did think before the trek that I would be able to stop, set up and take my time with photos. No such luck.

Zoom, Zoom the sherpa yelled, the pace was on, it was more like stop, think quick and shoot then keep walking. This meant that, photographically, the pressure was on.

It took nine days to reach icy basecamp. Once there the emotion of why I was there overflowed unexpectedly. I had done it, reached my dream, gone past exhaustion and without much food as the high altitude made my appetite disappear (thank god for the snake lollies I took).

Acheiving your dream by pushing through various physical and mental pain barriers transforms you, it shows you sides of yourself that rarely ever get tested and allows you to grow. Reaching Base Camp made me realise the strength I had deep within me, a strength I always doubted I had.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Syndrome affects approximately 1 in 2,500 people. There is no cure.

Whilst not usually life-threatening, it’s a lifelong condition that requires management, and often surgery.

Dylan Howlett had a prospective football career as a teenager until he was diagnosed with CMT, which affected his balance, caused his feet to claw, and robbed him of sensation in his extremities. Now in his early twenties, he’s had his feet reconstructed, a stopgap surgery that will be required again in the near future. His CMT curtails him from many activities the rest of us would take for granted.

CMT or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (named after the 3 medical professionals who first identified CMT) is also known as Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy (HMSN). It is a common but frequently undiagnosed condition. CMT is not a contagious disease but is an inherited neurological disease and in some families has a 50% chance of being passed onto other generations.

Research has indicated that as many as 1 in 2,500 people in Australia could have CMT. CMT is not life threatening although people with CMT have it for life.

SYMPTOMS CMT causes slow degeneration of the peripheral nerves including feet, legs, arms and hands.

Typically muscles are weakened due to the loss of stimulation by affected nerves. The severity of the disease can vary a great deal from person to person even within the same family.

The symptoms are also varied. There are over 50 types of CMT with no known cure for CMT at this point in time. However, significant research is being done both in Australia and overseas to find one.

A common symptom of CMT is weakness in leg muscles which affects one’s co-ordination and balance in such things as walking, running, walking up or down stairs, walking on uneven ground or just standing still or standing for long periods of time. Other symptoms which may affect CMT patients include: tremors, fatigue and diminishing fine motor skills.

Foot abnormalities such as high arched feet or, in some cases flat feet, weak ankles and tendon tightening pose the most serious problems. Sometimes patients may need to wear foot orthoses or braces or undergo surgery. Even the simplest things, functions we take for granted, like unscrewing a bottle top, fastening buttons, turning on a tap or opening a door handle can pose problems for those with muscle wastage in the hands. Untidy handwriting due to not having control over the muscles and nerves in the hands and fingers can pose a big problem for both children and adults.

The CMTAA Inc. strongly encourages people with CMT to participate in as many regular daily activities as possible and to develop skills in areas that they can excel in.

THE GOOD NEWS Significant progress is being made regarding CMT management strategies that have the potential to provide a fulfilling and healthy life.

Kev Howlett

Kev has always been creative. After he completed high school in the mid 80s, he studied Finished Art at Preston College in Melbourne. He did well in the first year and, as the teachers noticed Kev had a talent for photography, gave him the option to change to that as the focus of his study. Kev agreed and excelled, passing the course. He also met his wife, Blaise van Hecke, who was studying Photography the year below him. publishing

Following graduation, Kev gained a job as a Photographic Studio Assistant in a large commercial Studio in South Melbourne. He established himself as talented, dedicated, and innovative, and built a career as a freelancer over many years working in various studios.

In 1990, Blaise and Kev decided to backpack around the world for a year. They booked nothing, lived their dream, and took on life as it came. In Paris, on the top of the Eiffel Tower, Kev proposed to Blaise – nawwww. Once they returned home, they bought a house, got married, and had two boys, born in 1993 and ’96.

Kev continued working as a photographer, learning the new digital medium while Blaise – who’d always had an obsession with books – studied writing and editing. They complimented one another so well – Kev a master of photography and illustration, Blaise with words – that they thought, Hey, between us we can make books!

With that, Busybird Publishing was born.

Busybird went through a few evolutions, from working on CAD drawing for Ford, to a home-based boutique publisher, to a hands-on, caring publishing house on its own premises and with a great reputation behind it. Kev handles design and images, e.g. book covers, illustration, author photography, internal book design, and marketing content, while Blaise and staff handle the writing, editing, mentoring, and workshops.

Travel has stayed in Kev’s blood. Lately, he has fallen in love with trekking and climbing mountains. In 2014, Kev climbed to Mt Everest Base Camp (5,300mtrs) in Nepal, and in 2017 he decided he wanted to climb higher so he travelled to Ladakh, Kashmir, India and climbed the mountain Stok Kangri (6,153mtrs). Eight trekkers started on the way up that day, but only three made the summit – including Kev. Kev feels very proud of himself, exhibiting an inner strength that, for most of us, is rarely tested. Blaise also still has her love for travelling and, in 2018, completed the Camino de Santiago (800km) by herself.

Kev and Blaise, now together for 33 years, are looking forward to a bright and exciting future with all that is Busybird, as well as their future travel adventures like the TransSiberian Railway journey, which is planned for 2021.

A Touch of Paranormal

G’day folks, and welcome to my column about all things Paranormal.

What is Paranormal? The true meaning of the word is ‘Beyond the realms of normal’. The first thing I always ask is, “What is normal?”

It’s really just a matter of perception. For example, if a person is born blind, then to them that is perfectly normal, as they have never seen before. However, to those who are not blind, this would seem to be abnormal.

Confusing Huh! Welcome to the world of the Paranormal where not all is as it seems.

Modern day Paranormal investigating came from around the mid 1800’s with England’s Ghost Club and investigators like Harry Price, and Hans Holzer to name a couple. However, here in Australia, we are only relatively new at investigating the existence of ‘ghosts’.

Let’s look at our history. We have been a colony for a little over 200 years, but what a history! We were founded on convicts being transported to serve in penal colonies such as Port Arthur in Tasmania. Personally, I find the term ‘convict’ quite harsh. Some, or most of those convicted, were victims of the time. Poverty was rife in the Motherland and stealing food or necessities to survive was the only way to live for many. Being transported to a penal colony, and being taken away from your family and loved ones, must have been

I recall coming to this strange land myself as a child back in the early 70’s. My parents didn’t know anybody and had nothing but a suitcase and a couple of kids in tow. Life was difficult and at times home sickness was really bad. But we had a choice; we could have returned home if we wanted, unlike the convicts.

Just imagine how you would have felt, being in a foreign land with nothing and not knowing what each day would bring.

Being punished for a crime so petty that it’s almost inconceivable that you are here. You will never see your family or loved ones ever again. Your future was bleak at best. This isolation was too much for some who would have ended their life rather than being stuck here.

There would have been a lot of emotional energy lingering in the ether back then; that emotion is still around even today. If you have ever had the privilege of walking among the ruins of Port Arthur then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s this energy which we go in search of, to find the existence of the afterlife – ghosts. Many people have had personal experiences at Port Arthur, as well as many other haunted locations.

I myself had an encounter in 1993 while visiting Port Arthur. I was walking with my wife, holding her hand, as we walked through the Separate Prison. It was here that somebody or something tapped me on the shoulder as

if they wanted to catch my attention. Well, that they did!

The back story to the Separate Prison is that it was classified as a silent prison. Prisoners were let out of their cells for short periods of time for exercise. They were chained with hand cuffs and leg irons, with a hood placed over their head. They were never allowed to utter a single word, or this would be met by severe punishment such as solitary confinement for long periods, beatings or lashings with the Cat of Nine tails. The prisoners would walk along the wall of the prison inside, and if they bumped into another prisoner, they would tap them on the shoulder to let them know they were walking around. SURPRISE! That is exactly what I felt by an unseen hand. We continued on through the Separate Prison very quickly to the other end. Well, if the truth be known, I was almost running.

I had the privilege many years later to conduct some research into investigating the alleged haunting of Port Arthur, including Point Puer Boy’s Prison, the Un-consecrated Church and the Parsonage to name a few. I am still yet to go there to thoroughly investigate it.

However, logistically, it is near on impossible to conduct an investigation in just a few days without impacting on the public access.

Tasmania itself has so many old and haunted locations which I have had the privilege to investigate. I will go through some of these in more detail in my next column. I will explain some of the methods used in investigating the Paranormal, from traditional methods to more modern techniques with some of the teams I have mentored.

Our journey into the Paranormal may be a new one, but it sure has an exciting future.

Psychics Mediums

elcome to my column. I am a Spiritual Medium and Tutor.

Each month I will be discussing a range of different topics. This month I will be talking about Psychics versus Mediums, what they do and how differently they work.

Most people who visit psychics and mediums tend to have a real need of some sort; whether they need clarity and guidance in their lives or to connect with a past loved one/s. Both psychics and mediums can assist people by using slightly different techniques to enhance the person’s life and wellbeing.

Although different, the core is the same; to empower people who are either resolving grief or overcoming obstacles in their life. Both approaches are equally invaluable but with one main difference -the individual’s use of ‘power’ (the term ‘power’ will be discussed below).

As psychics are very sensitive people, they are able, on an unconscious level, to pick up and to tune into a sitter’s aura (energy, electrical and magnetic field that surrounds us all) to receive information on the client’s past history, their current circumstances and potential future experiences. I say potential, as we all have free will and personal responsibility and have a duty of care to ourselves.

Psychics can also work with ‘tools’ to aid them with their readings. This can include the use of cards such as Tarot, palmistry, runes, numerology and also reading an innate object belonging to the client, such as jewellery.

Reading a personal object is called psychometry; in other words, reading the soul history or residue energy field of any object. Practicing reading objects, it is a very good way to enhance your own psychic abilities. By holding the object and closing your eyes to really feel the object, your fingertips will read the energy and send information to your sub-conscious mind allowing you to report what you feel and see.

Getting your conscious mind out of the way is the hardest thing to do, as we so often question the information received, but you have to say it as it is, as it may have a very valuable meaning to your client.

Mediumship The saying ‘All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums’, is a very true statement.

Most of us have a level of intuition or sixth sense, which, in some people, is more pronounced and to them is a very natural state of being. Psychics use their sub-conscious mind, whereas medium’s use their sub-conscious mind and super conscious minds together. Psychics do not need the ‘power’ nor do they connect with the spirit world in the same way as a medium.

A medium has been chosen to be of Service to God. Mediumship and the art of mediumship, is a great privilege and it is an honour to be of service to spirit and to mankind. You could say that a medium is the link between the spirit and physical worlds and, by bringing the two worlds together, it helps and uplifts both.

A good medium needs to possess an innate psychic ability as, in a mediumship reading, there will still be aspects of psychic information required. Compassion is also a requirement as people who are grieving need assistance or guidance in moving forward.

Mediums’ have a duty to comfort the bereaved as some people come to us in great distress.

It is vital in this case to be very gentle and mindful with them and their feelings. Even a simple message of “I’m okay, I love you and I have arrived safely” is important to them, as sometimes this is all a grieving relative needs to hear. Obviously, the more evidence given, as in shared memories, life experiences and just reuniting them together for that special time, within a reading or demonstration, is truly wonderful. Simply to know that in the future they will be reunited with people that they truly love, brings them great comfort. Spirit communication helps people understand that life continues after physical death.

The term the ‘power’ is very important in mediumship, as basically, if there is no power there is no mediumship. The connection to the spirit world cannot take place without ‘power’. The power could also be termed as a shift in consciousness, an attunement to the spirit world and a blending of both worlds.

A brief exercise to connect to your power is to focus on your Solar Plexus area, located under your ribs; this is your soul power area. Visualise a golden light in this area, breathe it in and out and imagine it encompassing your whole being. By pushing this out and upwards, you shift your awareness to those in the spirit world. Connecting to, and maintaining, this soul power takes time and practice. I will discuss this, and much more, in the coming months.

here are many reasons why men do not seek out help when it is needed; one being that, although the industry is geared towards individuals, it will often overlook the needs of boys and men.

Alternatively, in many cases, men feel that if they seek help, they are somehow less of a man.

Looking at client notes from over the years, searching for any particular trends in client issues, it is not that hard to realize that on average, only one in six clients were men. What’s with 60,000 thoughts in a Day?

How we think plays a large part of how we feel about ourselves, our connection to other people and how we view the world.

Research has found the average person can have up to 60,000 thoughts a day. That’s a large volume of thoughts to experience and influence our lives on any given day. So, what do we do with this amount of thinking?

Thoughts are generated from perceptions of our experiences. According to research, we tend to experience the same type of thoughts repetitively which strengthens the brains neural pathways. The more we forge a pattern of thinking, the more the momentum builds within those pathways.

This is good news for our overall wellbeing if experiencing a majority of uplifting thoughts.

However, excessive negative thinking can mean we can easily sabotage our goals and contribute to the decrease of our self-esteem, causing feelings of worry, hopelessness and helplessness.

Thoughts drive our emotions and create physical sensations within our body. These range from feelings of physical wellbeing to symptoms of anxiety. Over time our thoughts have the potential to impact our physical wellbeing.

What we think we create and, depending on our thinking, we have the power to focus and create experiences that match the frequency of our thoughts. A Harvard study found the brain can build new neural pathways created by changes in thinking (Harvard Gazette, 2015). Being human means accepting we are less than perfect. We are constantly growing by learning new ways of being. Managing our thoughts takes time. The first step is to start analysing our thoughts through an observer’s point of view. Try to recognise where our thoughts might let ourselves down. Can we recognise any irrational thinking?

The next step is challenging our thoughts.

Are we focussing on weaknesses rather than strengths? Are we blaming ourselves for things that are not our fault? What is the evidence (if any) for what we think? Seek truth out by challenging any type of irrational thinking.

Changing a pattern of thinking takes time. It is essential to provide ourselves understanding, patience and empathy. When we place effort into changing our thoughts, no matter how small, the reward can be felt immediately.

The best part is we have many opportunities to practice, perhaps even up to 60,000 of them!

How to Achieve ‘NOTHING’ Successfully

n a society inundated with gadgets, TVs in multiple rooms, and a sundry of smart devices which seem to fill any void that we may have and fill every moment of silence; the idea of stillness and doing ‘Nothing’ remains at the top of the list of fears for many of my clients, patients, and students.

Observing how many people are on their phones, chatting while on cardio equipment, checking their social media on their yoga mats before the class begins or on their phones while at a restaurant with someone, which I am sure I have sinned and fall short from perfection in this space. The responses of those who accepted the January challenge of doing, ‘Nothing’ every day until they achieved it, led to the exploration of meditation, questions about how to achieve it, and to find the purposes of doing ‘Nothing’?

Here are a few common questions that people shared: What is ‘Nothing’? Can I listen to music while doing nothing? What if I do nothing while I ….? Why do ‘Nothing’? What are the obstacles to reaching ‘Nothing’? How do you know when you achieve it? Is there a process that works for everyone or are there many ways to accomplish ‘Nothing’?

What is ‘Nothing’? The state of nothing is intentionally free from thought, physical action, free from actively listening, free from visual distraction, and the object is not about resolution of any life, work, personal, social, or family problems.

There are many reasons to do nothing. According to Dharma Khalsa Singh, author of Meditation as Medicine and Food as Medicine, some of the holistic benefits emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and physically of meditation stillness are listed below: At 3 minutes, there is an increase in blood circulation, distributing enhanced endocrine secretions throughout the body At 7 minutes, the brain patterns begin to shift from static beta waves to calmer alpha waves and ultimately deep relaxing delta waves. At the same time the magnetic energy field around the entire body increase in strength.

At 11 minutes, the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems begin to accommodate for increased energy.

At 22 minutes, Anxiety-producing thoughts in the subconscious mind start to subside and clear.

The area of the brain responsible for remembering, learning, and our emotions grow new cells during two hours of silence. Other benefits of silence are regulating weight by reducing cortisol, lowering stress, increasing mental clarity, energy support; it improves the quality of sleep and opportunity for introspection and restoration.

Perhaps the original yoga classes without the sound baths, YouTube clips of frequencies, and mindless esoteric rambles should be replaced with stillness and silence may be even more profound and beneficial to teach students to function in silence and the art of stillness.

Some affective ways to navigate through the quotidian challenges of stillness and meditation are: 1) Do something physical first to eliminate the muscular distraction.

2) Close your Eyes to eradicate visual distraction.

3) Breathe deeply to focus the mind and use the breath to acknowledge your thoughts.

4) Sit upright instead of lying down. Often those who get too comfortable fall asleep.

“Should I feel guilty about doing ‘Nothing’ when I should be doing …” is one the second most reported question come challenge.

The answer is that guilt is a worthless emotion that does not serve anyone. According to the Metro lifestyle, University College London found that individuals, who work over 55 hours a week, increase their risk of having a stroke by 33 percent compared to those who work 35-40 hours a week.

The American Journal of Epidemiology, suggests that a 10 hour work day increased the risk of coronary heart risk by 80 percent.

In conclusion, performing ‘Nothing’ guilt-free has no definitive time parameters, location, or setting. Stillness in silence is the most beneficial type of nothing. There are many ways to achieve nothing and nothing can be done anytime of the day. The most important thing is to do nothing consistently.

In the past, the media and references from mainstream medicine, almost always referred to Alternative Medicine in a vaguely dismissive tone, cleverly and subtly implying the insanity of ditching the conventional medical approach in favour of dangerous weirdness.

Of course, this is not what natural health is about. Discovering Ayurveda Digesting the Knowledge of Life

Welcome to my column.

It is my pleasure to share the wonderful health benefits of Ayurveda - simple, sustainable ways to care for your health in a natural way, that feels so good!

I was first introduced to Ayurveda almost a decade ago, after discovering a book at my local library about digestive health. I can honestly say it was life changing.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translates as ‘science or knowledge of life.’ Although new to me, I soon learned that the ‘science of life’ is more than 5,000 years old, originating in ancient India and is a traditional system of natural medicine based on the universal principles of the five elements found in nature.

Intrigued, I soaked up as much information as I could, learning about the importance of digestion. How we should be mindful, not just of our food, but how we digest everything from our environment to our relationships. It also stressed the importance of making the time to rejuvenate through exercise, meditation, massage, rest and sleep, to be in synch with nature’s rhythms and seasons.

I wondered why this practical knowledge of self-care hadn’t been available to me earlier.

As more and more people search for ways to look after their health, Ayurveda provides the time-tested wisdom of living in harmony with nature. With its highly personalised approach, Ayurveda teaches us to listen to our own bodies and to adjust our daily routines and diet accordingly so as to support and promote vitality and longevity.

Each person is seen as a unique microcosm of nature, composed of the qualities and functions of the five universal elements:
