The Spirit of Things
Spirit & Soul
by Sam Duly

This month I will be talking about Spirit and Soul. I will share what I have learnt over the years on this subject, particularly from the Mediumship aspect.
We are essentially made up of three parts; Body, Soul and Spirit. Our body houses our Soul and our Soul houses our Spirit. Our physical body is what we chose before we came here; it is our ‘shell’ on this current earthly journey. In this physical world, our body, soul and spirit are all connected and work together, so it is important to nurture all three.
We are all a spark and an aspect of God, the Great Spirit, the pure God source; a Spark of the Divine is another term. God is not ‘a man sitting on a throne’, God is nature, the air we breathe, the sunset, sunrise, birds and so much more. The Great Spirit walks amongst us, we are all spirit, but at present we are having an earthly existence. In this current existence we are, in essence, God’s work manifesting on earth.
It is important to work on our own spirit by practising stillness of self; through this we discover who we truly are. The biggest hurdle is connecting with our own spirit and feel the presence of that inner personal power.
The next step is to learn to love our true self and look after our spiritual needs, just as we would our physical body. It is easier to love another, when self-love of the spiritual kind has been achieved. When we shine, our spirit lightens up everything and we are a power to be reckoned with and the motivation of our spirit directs us on our spiritual pathway.
Our Soul is the very core of who we truly are. The Soul contains ‘You’ and your personality and it is the real reason why we are here, it is our life, our current spiritual journey and is the next stage of our existence. Our Soul is here to learn many lessons in this classroom of life.

Sign of the Month
SCORPIO
Oct 24 – Nov 23

Co-ruled by both planet Pluto - death and rebirth and by red planet Mars - the god of war and passion, Scorpio is the fieriest water sign. Hot water or ice fire are both fitting images. Fire makes water boil, and water puts out fire. Water is the element associated with feelings and emotions, hence Scorpio’s penchant for the cold emotions of depression and despair or the hot emotions of lust, rage and jealousy. If you can’t stand the heat, best stay out of the Scorpio bedroom!
That is a cautionary warning, not quite an ultimatum, yet have you noticed how Scorpio is given to issuing ultimatums? A classic is “It’s all or nothing.” Threats are another favourite form of discourse, such as, “If you see her again, you’re dead meat.” Funnily enough, some people seem to love that kind of challenge. Or, at least, it seems to hook them in.
Mention of hooks and dead meat reminds me of the Sumerian myth of Inanna, the Queen of Heaven’s descent into the underworld domain of her sister Ereshkigal, ‘Lady of the Great Place Below’. She is progressively stripped naked and, at her lowest ebb, ravaged with her carcass hung on a hook to rot. When you consider that it is the fate of many a Scorpio to experience such extremes of suffering, it may be understood how their famous passion may transmute into compassion, which then becomes the underlying wellspring of their life and work.
French writer, Albert Camus, author of The Plague, may speak for many when he writes: “I have such a strong desire to help reduce the sum of unhappiness and bitterness which empoisons mankind.”

Midst of Disaster? We need to Know
By Jane Offer

Recently, a close friend’s mother died suddenly. There was no warning, she just went to sleep. It was a very peaceful way to go, but deeply shocking for the family. Each of her granddaughters has decided to have a piece of jewellery made, embossed with her fingerprint. It’s a lovely memory and it got me thinking.
There are about eight billion people on this planet and each one of us has a completely different fingerprint. Then, there are all the people from the beginning of time, each with their own pattern. That is a lot of differences! But it makes one statement – we are all unique through our differences not from our sameness. Therefore, wouldn’t it be sensible to embrace those differences, drop judgement and live in peace and harmony together as one community.

For centuries, people have lived in groups, knowing it is a vital part of our journey in life. We search constantly for like-minded people, a soul mate and are encouraged in many self-help books to ‘find our tribe’. At this time, we are probably the most isolated we have ever been without even realising it.
Social media reflects friends at a distance; there is no eye-to-eye conversation, our ears do not hear the tone of words of support or comfort and certainly there is no gentle touch on our arm when we are feeling sad or confused.
We do not know our neighbours; many of us are not even in touch with the earth beneath our feet, living as we do in our highrise apartment buildings. Our connection to others is being whittled away and yet we know more about what’s happening in the world that we ever did.
We need people to talk to, to share experiences and we want to help others. It is woven into our nature as human beings. When we are denied this, for whatever reason, we become isolated and alone. We hear about the isolation of our old people, with figures showing that 1 in 3 are suffering from loneliness and have not spoken to another person for at least a month.
