Ed’s Anthony Kilner

Community in focus As per usual, it’s been an interesting month getting this magazine issue together. Considering we are a bunch of people, many without formal writing skills, we are managing to create a magazine every month, dealing with the pressures of deadlines, stories falling through, gaps to fill and putting in some serious hours to make it all happen. Without the amazing team around me it wouldn’t happen – it’s that simple! My initial dream of starting Supernal Magazine was to create a magazine that explored people’s stories from the heart and to offer a voice to ordinary people who we’d otherwise never hear from. However, it’s grown into much, much more than that. I realised on the weekend, over a cuppa with a friend, that what the team is creating is based around birthing a community. It’s an exciting thing to do really. Having people who care about what they write and say in their columns, people who 6

care about sharing their stories, two amazing art people with differing skills and passion to create a visual that sets a high standard, we have/are creating a community with an outlet – a voice! It’s such a special blend of diverse people who contribute to this community that it can only grow. Like all jobs out there, passion will get you so far, then there’s the work to be done and that’s a part of living our dream and the contribution we make to community. We are looking for support to keep growing our community and feedback helps us do that. We are listening. “It’s such a special blend of diverse people who contribute to this community that it can only grow.” I’d love to hear from readers about their thoughts on community. Are you involved in a sporting group, or council programmes to help in the local community? Do you volunteer at school, local gardens or even overseas? There are so many ways people contribute to community. Why not drop us an email and tell us about your community. I must say some of the feedback from last issue’s NDIS stories has been very heartfelt. There are so many people touched by the ever changing NDIS scheme, both in a good way and a not so good way. It’s a story that will continue to unfold with the ultimate aim of helping those people in our community that need it most. Apart from another round of interesting reads from our columnists in this issue we have our two feature stories this month that are worlds apart. Freya Sampson (regular columnist in WA) has interviewed

OCTOBER 2019 freely here, were born in South Africa and will never leave her soul. Our main interview this month is described as a powerhouse in many areas of business and community. We introduce you to Miriam Silva. A Muslim woman who is shining in what is traditionally a man’s world.

We hope you enjoy his story, his community. Look out for a special deal on his CDs in the product pages! “Uncle Noel offers some amazing insights into community.” Our second feature was written by another special person, Louise Ogg. Louise was a co-founder in the Ubuntu movement about community in South Africa. Her journey is timely in many ways and explains how a dream, an experience, changed her life and how the rise and fall of the Ubuntu dream was a huge part of that journey. Louise now lives in Australia and is creating her community based around her way of living – caring, enlightened and honestly. Her values, that she imparts

We mentioned that we’d have a feature on 5G in this issue. While we manage to make most things work, this story has become a far bigger story than I thought it would and, reading the first transcripts, I decided to pull it from this issue and allow a few more pages to do it justice in an upcoming issue. “It’ll make for some compelling reading I can guarantee that – stay tuned!” The story has been thoroughly researched with references back to web links, videos and much more. I think it’s going to open people’s eyes as to what the 5G system is all about and why it’s so important that we take time out to understand what’s behind it, causing countries to ban its introduction into their environment. This story is not about scaremongering or creating a fear around it, it’s about educating people as to the system, its why’s and wherefores’ and what’s possibly behind it all. It’ll make for some compelling reading I can guarantee that – stay tuned! I hope you enjoy the read and as always have a Supernal month!

Rosslyn Sanctuary Supports Dementia Australia Sharon Lee-Gaine set up Rosslyn Sanctuary Anam Cara one year ago, as a way to work with and educate the Melbourne public about spirit. There are talks on spiritual topics and proof of survival, with various mediums providing demonstrations at its monthly meetings in Ringwood. Sharon has been touched by dementia in her family, and realised there was a need to raise funds to help Dementia Australia. A fee is charged to people attending the event each month, with a large portion of those fees going directly to Dementia Australia. The money raised is toward funding a 24 hour hotline for carers and supporters of those with dementia. Sharon Lee-Gaine stated, “We were delighted on our 1st anniversary, to present Kelly from Dementia Australia with a cheque of $2218-00, which is such a deserving charity.” “Thank you to all who come along each month and support Rosslyn Sanctuary, we are grateful for it all. Last but not least, thank you spirit for your guidance, love and support and making it all possible.” For more information about Rosslyn Sanctuary Anam Cara, you can check out all the details at: www.sharonleepsychicmedium.com.au

Manifesting Maven

Leading from Your Intuition Dr. Brooklyn Storme PhD

Why is it that some entrepreneurs seem to be happier than others? Why are some of them seemingly developing and scaling their business with so much ease? If you’ve ever wondered why, you’re not alone. I wondered too and the answer was found in an unexpected place. Your business is an extension of you. It is an expression, out there in the world, of everything you think, believe and feel to be true. From your bank account to your office layout, your team, your mission and vision – every single aspect of the business comes from somewhere within you. Yet when things go wrong or feel a little off, our instinct is to search outside of ourselves for help. We sign up to a course, we join a webinar, we download a PDF - we get distracted by bright and shiny objects! Your internal world creates your external world. Your

10

business was developed from the inside out. This means that the guidance you are seeking for resolution to your business problems, can be found on the inside too. We just forget to look there. Or perhaps we don’t trust ourselves. We have doubt, we question and we need confirmation from the external world around us. I worked with a lady called Liz - not her real name - who was just like that. Liz was a healer and she really wanted to help more clients, but despite her best efforts at marketing, the clients just weren’t appearing. She eventually signed up for a two-day seminar with a ‘guru’ who promised Liz that she could turn things around simply by applying the step-by-step process she’d receive as a part of the training. Liz found the money and attended the training. Afterwards she felt very excited. She began to implement the new

processes and procedures, which proved quite difficult as it meant undoing a lot of the work she’d already done. But the clients still did not come. Not knowing what to do next, a friend suggested she watch a live webinar being run by an authority on social media marketing. Liz signed up for the training and she took lots of notes, eager to transform her posts, articles and blogs into something that would be more

enticing to her ideal client. No one showed up. No new clients.

business feeling great as a healer and loved helping others, but she began to realise that there were many elements to the business where she was unsure. Her confidence began to wane and the confidence in her ability to help others also began to wane. As she was bemoaning her situation to her colleagues, she became aware of a feeling of heaviness deep inside. She heard herself say things like, “Maybe I’m not

cut out for this.” She began doubting herself. I met Liz quite by accident on Facebook. She was sharing her story in a group we are both in and I immediately wanted to help. She shared her marketing with me and asked for feedback. The marketing was surprisingly good but what really needed attention was mindset. She had lost herself along the way. Initially, she was

This waning began to manifest in things like her Facebook live videos. In earlier videos, she radiated energy and vibrancy and at that time she had clients. They were seeking her out because of her energy and warmth. In more recent videos, she looked defeated and, some might say that, perhaps her energy was repelling her ideal clients from joining the business. By helping Liz to understand that she already had the answers to her fears and questions within and by helping her learn to trust herself, over time she rediscovered her energy and vibrancy. Liz realised she didn’t like doing Facebook videos and so stopped them. What felt better to her was meeting people in person, so she started running information sessions and found that she really loved helping the people that attended. As the weeks passed, momentum began to build and soon she had to shift

the sessions to a different venue because her rooms couldn’t match the capacity of the attendees. Like Liz, there is a version of you deep inside that already has the guidance and the answers. There’s a version of you that’s already living her (or his) successful business with their ideal clients. So, when things are feeling a little off in the business, it’s because something in the external world is now out of alignment with what your Higher Self knows to be true. When you become aware of this feeling, you might want to begin training yourself to listen to that voice, to pay attention to that gut feeling or the nudge and consider what action can be taken to be better aligned with your Higher Self and how it is operating in the business. The simplest way to begin this training is by starting with small things. This will allow you to build your intuition muscle and over time, your confidence will grow. Just like Liz, you’ll be able to operate your business from a place of intuitive leadership. Happy manifesting

The Aussie

An Objective Look at Subjective – Colour Colour is everything in our lives – it’s everywhere, it’s beautiful and defines a lot about who we are as people. In everyday life, we associate with colour interact with it and live it. The clothes we put on in the morning, our favourite colour, the foods we eat, the car we drive, the way we decorate our homes, workspaces - the list goes on. “…her business has gone through the roof and she has met her soul mate.” Nature provides us with inspiration through colour; that gorgeous sunrise or sunset, the range of colours in flowers, trees and animals - OMG how stunning is this planet with its colour? Even

at night, the colour of the sky can vary markedly from black to blue, the stars and planets shine through and the Northern Lights are to die for.

the visible colour spectrum. There’s a lot of science here that I won’t bore you with, as there are books on the subject for those keen to learn more.

Yep, we as humans live and breathe colour. I for one am very happy I can see full stop. I can’t fathom how life is for people who are blind or colour blind. Many moons ago, I worked with a partially colour-blind mechanic who managed to cut a wiring loom by mistake so I spent a fair bit of time repairing it for him. He was the first colourblind person I had met and worked with. It was tough for him not to be able to tell the difference in colours.

In dreams, of course, we see colour as muted. For us older folk, it’s like watching a colour cartoon on a black and white TV – it’s colour but it’s dull. Astral travel and real life subjective experiences, however, are vibrant in colour and can offer lots of help in understanding the messages from our Soul and the Universe.

However, there’s more to colour than the colour itself – colour is a frequency! The frequency can be felt by people in different ways, which is why we all have different colour preferences. Feeling colour is one thing, but how we perceive the colour, through our eyes and into our brains, is all a part of

“…OMG how stunning is this planet with its colour!” When considering colour, our chakra system is based on colour and frequency; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet white are the seven major chakras and each play a part in the sound frequency of understanding colour. I was once interviewed by a lovely lady from Queensland

dreams work in mysterious ways and colour is a key factor in understanding what is happening around us. Basic Colour Interpretations

about dream interpretation in general. It was fun and we chatted for around 30 minutes on the subject. She was sceptical to a point and played Devil’s advocate for most of it, until she asked me to interpret her dream live on the spot. I can’t remember word for word however here’s a basic summary. “…the red sports car represents passion in your direction and a sense of freedom to go where you need to go…” I had a dream that I was driving a red convertible sports car. The sun was shining and I was driving dressed in smart casual work wear. The road was initially rough and pot holed, yet it smoothed out after going over some hills. The area around me was vivid green and I felt a sense of freedom I hadn’t felt before. My interpretation went along the lines of - the red sports car represents passion in your direction and a sense of freedom to go where you

need to go, even though you are starting out roughly, hence the bad road. Things will smooth out for your work direction, (the clothing worn). Work will expand and offer you an amazing sense of life and vitality. This is explained by the rough road and hills becoming smooth, the sun for growth and the green for vitality. When you put together the convertible - a sense of fun, with the green growth and coming from the heart, there was a chance this lady was going to find love with a soul mate. There’s a little more in this. That lady is now living overseas, her business has gone through the roof and she has met her soul mate. I mentioned this a little while ago and she had forgotten the details of our chat. She was blown away, because at the time she was just building her business here in Australia and in a relationship. All I can say is that the Universe and our soul

Divine Time A Magnitude of Magnetic Energy You may find life, energy and people, getting a little ‘Over the Top’ in the coming weeks. A veritable magnitude of magnetic energy is coming from above, beaming its way down to the Earth plane. This is simply the Universe attending to cosmic ordering, but us humans never stop asking, so it’s built up somewhat and is coming in all at once. This must be a lesson for Earth dwellers; addicted to need, so we are always in the attitude of want. We are currently in the Moon known as the Self-Existing Tone of Form, the 4th tone and moon in this new cycle of natural time. Therefore, what you imagined and thought you may like to bring into manifestation last moon, comes forth. However, it maybe all at once and disjointed to boot. What is it you truly want? Hopefully nothing, because who wants to be wanting? What do you truly desire?

14

Supernal Magazine

Do you desire anything at all? Or do you have no idea because you are in a state of eternal confusion. Do you know yourself well enough to know the difference between want and desire? What would you desire? What would be or could be, what is and what is not. That is the question.

Meditate. Be still in this Self-Existing Moon. From October, the totem is the owl and the owl’s a wise bird. It has the ability to turn its head 360 degrees, so vision and perspective are not a problem.

The owl has night vision. Practice being an owl. No rushing around is necessary, as you will see all that is simply by being still. To hunt, you need only venture out at the right time and all will be revealed. Then, practise feeling what you desire, because you will be in tune with your higher sensory perception. We have said this before and now it is imperative you begin to take notice, for 2020 is looming and you want to get that vision in good focus. It’s a good time to study new modalities and open your eyes to the world and what it offers, as science and spirit are on a reasonable par with each other. By November 19, you will want to ruffle your feathers, to preen and be seen. You may feel like strutting your stuff and sharing your new found knowledge. The peacock follows the owl. The peacock represents the overtone of radiance and knowledge no longer needs

divine guidance

to be hidden, secrets can be revealed along with your amazing aptitude for spiritual discovery and know how. Remain humble, but don’t be afraid to stand up and be seen and heard, as the 5th Overtone Moon is about empowerment and maybe your self-confidence can encourage others to stand, be seen and heard and speak up also.

“Knowledge and wisdom are not about being right or wrong.” Knowledge and wisdom are not about being right or wrong. It’s about offering what you know in relation to your experiences and understanding. It’s about willingness to discuss and, if need be, agree to differ and come up with solutions, plans and ideas that will benefit the whole, the greater and the good. As we move through days and weeks, we begin to realise it’s not about what we can have, but what we

can do and be. We find how self-empowering it can be to see your worth, rather than the worth of things around you. A peacock, to observers, may appear to be a bit of a show-off. Maybe other birds of lesser colour and feathered aura may see this as something to fear, to bring down, resent or to idolise. The peacock, however, is what it naturally is. It is radiant, beautiful and gifted with a glorious array of feathers that represent the all-seeing eye. It is a sign of protection, highly developed spirituality, psychic awareness and signifies royalty. The peacock doesn’t go out of its way to make anyone else feel insignificant, nor is it showing off. It is being itself and sharing its beauty, given by the Creator, for all to receive. A lesson from peacock to humans is to watch out for tall poppy syndrome. Be yourself and don’t hide your

light under a bushel. Don’t resent others for their beauty and gifts nor judge yourself as less. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The female peacock is not so endowed in feathered brilliance as the male but they see the worth in themselves and each other. As October becomes November, we have new beginnings, mindfulness, heart and intuition and creativity on our side. Find the brilliance; it’s hidden in plain sight. Your span of intelligence, wisdom, compassion and ability is far greater than you have yet to know. Lak’ech ala K’in

The Paradigm Shift of Community Respected Elder Dr Noel Nannup by Freya Sampson, Custodian Eartheart

A paradigm shift occurs within one’s consciousness, when sitting and communing with respected Elder, Dr (Uncle) Noel Nannup. It is an almost imperceptible experience, as you listen to him share his life’s journey. One’s concept of community, and the importance of it, becomes an experience that is felt and known within the heart. As I listened, Uncle Noel stated that, “The question we need to consider is, what is it about the quantum world that gives it, its distinctively counterintuitive quantum flavour?”

Images by Freya Sampson

He went on to say, “In a world that relies upon the ability to scientifically prove the inner workings and processes of things, the quantum field itself cannot be measured, weighed, quantified or defined. When we come to understand this and tease out that concept, we find out and realise, that it is a force, it

is spirit itself. I’m bold enough to say that now.” Through spending time in nature with him, at some point it dawns on you you realise that you are experiencing your own oneness with nature, with all of life. Somehow, he has gotten your mind out of the way. You are in such presence and flow that you become this experience of oneness. It happens easily, without any thought or effort at all, and you perceive - with all of your senses - that there is nothing more natural or normal than this experience of being oneness. This is the simple yet profound message delivered by Uncle Noel. Community is not only about relationships between people, it is the relationship between people and nature, in all of its forms. The human mind struggles to makes sense of this, because in a westernised world, we are taught in most schools a philosophy that has a system of values based upon scientific measurement and, of course, economics.

Supernal Magazine

19

“Community is not only about relationships between people, it is the relationship between people and nature, in all of its forms.” Our society’s systems are set up to create more people educated in this way and to function within a paradigm in which one gets a qualification, then gets a job to earn money to buy material things. This is the way we are taught that we will be secure in life, providing we follow that path.

The profound difference that strikes me in Uncle Noel’s sharing is that he speaks of the relationship between people and nature as one of custodianship, and that, within this relationship when tended to, ushers forth an inner wellspring of innate security.

“At some point it dawns on you… you realise that you are experiencing your oneness with nature, with all of life.” To truly comprehend, we need to consider what it really means to be a custodian and how that custodianship translates in relationship. A custodian is someone who has been entrusted with the care

of something. Therefore, that someone then has the responsibility to consider what is in the best interest of that something and then take the actions that align with that purpose. The very first story of creation, from the Wadjak Noongar people of the Perth regions of WA, speaks of this concept. In the beginning, when all of the world was created and came into being, the Great Spirit gave the Earth into the care of humanity. Hence the name of that creation story, ‘The Carers of Everything.’ We, as humanity, have so many different cultural perspectives on how things are and ‘should’ be. These are all really constructs in our individual minds.

feature

Uncle Noel described it perfectly when he said, “We have to know what that ‘culture’ is. Culture is not what your hands pick up and move, culture is what moves your hand.” To paraphrase, culture is the intention and purpose, driving one to action. “Therefore, you need to know what is in their mind, the thinking, the understanding.” As we spoke, it became apparent that the tricky thing about the mind is that it does not feel, it does not know. It is the ego that thinks it knows this is the same for every one of us. Our mind is not the place from which we intuit, nor the place from which we know or have gut feelings - that comes from our spirit. The

mind is a container that we, our families, schools and the media etc, fill with beliefs and programs. Each mind has different content and each person’s ego is attached to the beliefs within their mind. This is how we have been trained to measure our world, including our personal identity, our sense of security, place and self-worth. Most of it is unconscious. In reflecting upon Noel’s wisdom, I began to perceive that which he is alluding to; the one thing which unites all of us is nature and our relationship with it. The condition of nature, therefore, is the mirror in which we can look to see the condition of, the contents of, the minds of humanity.

This becomes the measure upon which we can see how we are doing in our role as custodians of the Earth and nature and as ‘the carers of everything’.

“Culture is not what your hands pick up and move, culture is what moves your hand.” This is where Noel is leading us - to reflect upon how is it that one is personally relating to nature and all of life. Nature is the elements of creation, of which there are five: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Aether (Spirit). Nature is the plants, the animals, the insects, the wind, the fire, the sunshine and rain, the microscopic organisms and the fungi.

It is all of the ecology and the systems and processes within nature that are occurring all of the time. One feeds the other and nothing is wasted. Noel really takes the time to share in depth about the intricate relationships between aspects of nature.

“Nature’s health is vital to our health and our survival.” As one reflects on the perfection of nature, the one thing that becomes quite glaringly obvious is that there is something quite seriously amiss with (most of) the culture of humanity. Uncle Noel aptly describes this in the words of his father. “That each of us is a product of our upbringing. That our upbringing determines how

22

Supernal Magazine

we behave in community and our upbringing comes with ‘baggage.’ The baggage is the beliefs of the family and the society.” In our westernised society’s mindset, everything has been compartmentalised and de-naturalised. One only needs to look outside to see that there is nothing natural about the way cities and suburbs are constructed and operate. One only needs to look at the increasing diseases and health issues in humanity and the destruction of nature, giving rise to ‘environmental issues’, such as rapid species extinction, deforestation, plastic particles in the cellular makeup of every animal born (including humans). Pollution of our oceans and waterways with plastic,

insecticides and herbicides coupled with global warming, help us to realise that we are the seeds of our own destruction. Whatever we are respectively and collectively intending to create, where we are placing our attention as a culture and the purpose we have been acting upon (that which is moving our hand) is, unfortunately in general, harmful and is actually fatal for all lifeforms on the planet. The culture of compartmentalisation and departmentalisation for the facilitation of westernised society in its current form, has not been, and is not now, working out for us as a species, nor for any other species of flora or fauna. It is therefore our ‘baggage!’ It cannot be denied, that it is us, individually and collectively, who have forgotten the simple truth, that nature supports life, your life, our lives and the lives of the generations to come - community. Nature and all of the relationships between the elements, the beasts, the microorganisms, the plants and the seas, is not a commodity to be compartmentalised, organised, used, controlled, bought and sold or dominated. Noel said many

feature Bush Banksia

times while we were walking through the bush, “It is so vital and we must take care of and preserve it.” In truth, it is a privilege to be entrusted with the care of, and to live as one with, this infinite force. Nature does not need us but, without a shadow of a doubt, we, humanity need nature. Uncle Noel took time to share with us some of the relationships between the plants in Wireless Hill Park, where we met. The community of Sheoak trees creates the perfect environment for the understorey of native orchids which bloom at this time of year. One could not exist without the other. The closer one looks to nature, the more one realises the interconnectedness and interdependence of all species. While we were being in nature, a usually reclusive bearded dragon lizard came out of hiding to greet us. Nature’s health is vital to our health and our survival. Nature is the primary concern and the primary factor that defines humanities health and the health of the local, national and global community. Ought then we, as humanity, both personally and

collectively, be unifying our culture to make choices that place the well-being of nature and Earth first? Were we to take responsibility for this personally, then collectively we could change the condition of ‘the environment’ by harmonising with it and then we could ensure the longevity of humanity and all natural life. Our time together left me deeply reflecting and questioning. In this moment here and now, one could, if one chooses, reflect upon the changes one would make to the culture of their own being and the contents/ thinking processes - the culture of their own mind. You could choose to ask yourself - If nature’s health is the primary need, what

would I do differently? What are the steps I could take to embody (to become, to do and to live) the culture of custodianship of the Earth, nature and all of life. The essence of community, at its highest truth, is reverence and respect for nature, action in the direction of caring for everything, from a place of what is best for ‘we’ now and for those to follow, AKA not only me, myself and I and not only humanity, but for all sentient life and nature itself. If your value system changed to truly embody this, would your moment to moment choices be different? What would you feel and what is your purpose, what burning yearning would fuel your call to action?

LIVING UBUNTU Something happens to you when you put yourself out of your comfort zone; relinquish all sense of daily duty and responsibility in favour of living in the moment, and wandering through the wilderness, as it were. Something fundamental changes within you - you tune into a different pulse of life - and things are never the same. I grew up in a dirty little industrial town in South Africa in the 70’s and 80’s. As a white child under the

26

Supernal Magazine

Apartheid regime, I received more than my fair share of bigoted indoctrination and separatist propaganda. Not that my family was particularly racist, but perhaps because they also didn’t actively oppose this system of oppression, I grew up feeling lost in my developing belief system and with no idea of where I truly belonged. You see, at the time I didn’t have the answers to the problems so evident in our society but I did realise that merely participating in it ‘feeds the beast’. I instinctively knew that I wanted my life to evolve naturally according to a deeper sense of meaning.

I wanted to live with a sense of purpose, rather than being a mere cog in the corporate wheel, so I let go and allowed my life to be directed by my sense of passion, my innate love of life and nature and my connection to something greater that I had always sensed within – Spirit! It was never entirely clear why I decided to pack up my life, my home and my job in 2003 - but I did. I headed into West Africa with only a backpack, a camera and my five-year-old daughter. I had an unshakable feeling that the next piece of my life’s puzzle was somewhere in deepest darkest Africa, and so I went!

feature Looking back, I can see that this fundamental shift in how I chose to live my life, could be compared to changing tracks and I now realise it changed the entire trajectory of my life. Navigating by feeling alone, I was led along a path, although at the time seemingly random, taking me, step by purposeful step, toward my destiny.

have to co-create a new world, based on a united philosophy. I was officially on a mission!

It happened one morning on the banks of the wide and majestic Senegal River. At the time, I had never heard of a ‘mystical experience’ and that moment for me was the first in my life. The thick mud was pitch-black under our bare feet. It was hot and humid as we walked along the shore outside the walls of our riverside hotel.

“Something fundamental changes within you you tune into a different pulse of life - and things are never the same.

There were bare breasted women washing their dishes in the sand. A man alone standing on a dugout canoe, carrying woven fish traps, sailing downstream. There was a strange hush to the moment and a rhythm, which brought all the sounds together in an enticing harmony. A light breeze was blowing - it spoke to me, literally “Time to create a new culture,” it said. The voice said it clearly twice! In that moment, my life shifted into sharp focus. A new sense of purpose permeated every cell in my body and I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, what I had been born to do, BE. Of course!

When you surrender to spirit, as I had recently discovered, life inevitably guides you towards situations and people who will be instrumental in the affirmation of your selffulfilling prophecy.

Over the course of the next decade, my journey into discovering what it would mean to create a new culture, unfolded in the most inexplicable way. Over the next two years, I was initiated into a communal way of

living in a remote coastal village in the Transkei, where I lived - sometimes three months at a time - without electricity or any connection to the outside world. During that time, without knowing it, I attuned myself to the ever pervasive harmonic of the natural world and, for a moment there, it felt as if I had literally ‘popped’ through the veil of my former life. Endless days spent walking the coastline in complete unbridled awareness, teaches you about the cycles of nature because you are immersed in them. You are not only in the world, but a part of it, and the lessons learned there became inextricably a part of me. The Xhosa community I spent time with, lived in a way that was completely foreign to

feature how I grew up. What struck me most was that every family in the district contributed in some way to the benefit of the entire greater community. Young boys went fishing together. The girls collected firewood. The older people tended the crops and everyone came together to enjoy celebrations. All the children play together and all the adults take care of all the children. The community is deeply invested in the wellbeing of every individual and every person in the community contributes to the wellbeing of the whole. I was struck by the simplicity of such a lifestyle and how rich and fulfilling it was. The impact of the time I spent in that village changed the way I saw the world and my hopes for a new culture, co-created, by earth centred, conscious individuals. It was only years later, that I realised that what I had experienced was the Southern African philosophy called Ubuntu. Essential to the Xhosa people’s belief system, expressed in the saying “umuntu ngumntu ngabantu” which means ‘a person is a person because of other persons.’ In 2010, I met Michael Tellinger at one of his talks about the stone circles of Southern Africa and soon discovered that we shared more than a passion for rocks. He had just launched his idea of ‘Contributionism’ - which, in essence, proposes similar principles of Ubuntu. The next phase of my journey unfolded with Michael and I co-founding the global

Ubuntu Liberation Movement and Ubuntu Planet in 2013. Within little over a year, the message of Ubuntu had spread to almost every country in the world. People from everywhere wanted to get involved, start their own communities, and embrace – what was to become ‘our’ Ubuntu’s popular catch phrase - “a world without money.” Looking back, I now recognise how overwhelmed we became by the magnitude of our vision and the wave of support that rose in response to our story. Had we used the movement to support all the people who resonated with Ubuntu – instead of the other way around – I believe we would have helped create lasting change in the form of working community models around the world.

“Empowered communities are merely a byproduct of empowered individuals,” Before long we became scattered in our focus – Michael initiated a global political front in an attempt to ‘take down the banks’. I was hell bent on building community. We were divided in our opinions of the direction Ubuntu should be steered. We lost sight of the original essence of Ubuntu… ‘I am, because of you…’ Oh, the irony of a philosophy of Unity Consciousness! But all was not lost. We tried and we failed and yet our foundering has birthed new seeds of truth. Michael has focused

Ubuntu Planet toward the creation of an investment initiative called One Small Town, where detailed business plans, based on his proposed system of Contributionism, are offered to investors for the ‘unique opportunity to help the town rejuvenate rapidly’. They call it – ‘Adopt a Small Town’. My journey, since I parted ways with Ubuntu Planet in 2016, has involved a deep introspection into what it means to ‘Live Ubuntu’. I travelled extensively, seeking the wisdom of indigenous elders around Africa as well as in Australia. I spent time in several communities and engaged in conversations around the start-up of many more. I came to the conclusion that instead of working to build and empower communities, we should focus, rather, on empowering the people first. Empowered communities are merely a by-product of empowered individuals, are they not? I now work with an epic global team of activated and conscious individuals who are financially uplifting themselves, funding their own projects and helping others do the same through ethical digital and affiliate marketing. The spirit of Ubuntu is alive and well - and often in the most unlikely places. Through the power of the internet, people are coming together to co-create a beautiful new way. At the end of the day, it takes time and money to change the world but with Ubuntu in our hearts, anything is possible!

The Spirit Of Things Spirit & Soul by Sam Duly This month I will be talking about Spirit and Soul. I will share what I have learnt over the years on this subject, particularly from the Mediumship aspect. We are essentially made up of three parts; Body, Soul and Spirit. Our body houses our Soul and our Soul houses our Spirit. Our physical body is what we chose before we came here; it is our ‘shell’ on this current earthly journey. In this physical world, our body, soul and spirit are all

connected and work together, so it is important to nurture all three.

“Our Soul is the very core of who we truly are…” We are all a spark and an aspect of God, the Great Spirit, the pure God source; a Spark of the Divine is another term. God is not ‘a man sitting on a throne’, God is nature, the air we breathe, the sunset, sunrise, birds and so much more. The Great Spirit walks amongst us, we are all spirit, but at present

we are having an earthly existence. In this current existence we are, in essence, God’s work manifesting on earth. It is important to work on our own spirit by practising stillness of self; through this we discover who we truly are. The biggest hurdle is connecting with our own spirit and feel the presence of that inner personal power. The next step is to learn to love our true self and look after our spiritual needs, just as we would our physical body. It is easier to love another, when self-love of the spiritual kind has been achieved. When we shine, our spirit lightens up everything and we are a power to be reckoned with and the motivation of our spirit directs us on our spiritual pathway.

“It is important to work on our own spirit by practicing stillness of self.” Our Soul is the very core of who we truly are. The Soul contains ‘You’ and your personality and it is the real reason why we are here, it is our life, our current spiritual journey and is the next stage of our existence. Our Soul is here to learn many lessons in this classroom of life. It is important to understand that

32

Supernal Magazine

mediumship the Soul is animated by the spark and the intelligence of the spirit which moves through it. Through our free will, we can deviate from the soul’s original plan, but our spirit willalways remain pure. Our Soul can be seen as a diamond, the many facets of which representing all of our life experiences through which we learn. These

whether we are 5, 25, 50 or 70 years old, it will unfold when our Soul has decided to open up those mediumship faculties. As a medium, not only do we need to look at our Soul purpose, but also and more importantly, not to criticise the work that the Soul does. This is a challenge for a medium, but we must allow

conscious mind take control, we take away from the message that the Spirit world is actually giving and that, in turn, takes us away from our own power. By letting our Soul rise to blend with the Spirit world, we can then trust that the information we are receiving is evidential and accurate. If we do not allow this blending process, our conscious mind can add

experiences can be good, bad or indifferent, but they are experiences that we chose, as the Earth really is a classroom for all of us. When we fully understand our purpose in this life time, we will be ready to serve and achieve our Soul’s greater calling. As a medium, it is equally important to realise that our Soul has opened up at the right time in our life for our mediumship to come forth; it has been training us for this special time in our life. So,

our Soul to rise above the conscious negative thoughts that our mind can bring forward. We must have Soul confidence and trust the information that we receive from the Spirit world, by not allowing the conscious mind to presume and make information fit.

“When we shine, our spirit lightens up everything…” We must let our Soul do the work along with help from the Spirit world. If we let our

in information that is not so accurate. Never forget as mediums, we are the ‘living demonstration’ of those in Spirit. It is seen as a great privilege to work for the Spirit world and to also provide selfless service. Next month I will be writing about Development Circles and groups. Yours in Spirit Sam Duly

and thumb tip has a small chakra on it so they are very sensitive and useful for feeling and doing. When one connects the tips of the fingers together it has various effects on our energy body. For example, the stilling of the mind or Dhyana Mudra, cuts off the energy flow to the lower chakras.

Transforming Life On Earth By Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart

Joy! Today we talk about how to take care of our root/ base chakra and grow a strong root system. Here are some simple exercises to help keep you connected both to Source and grounded to the Earth.

Tree of Life Grounding Exercise for strengthening your Root/Base Chakra: Go out into nature where there are trees - the back yard or a park is perfect. Choose a large healthy tree and sit with your back against it, if you wish. Short on time, then find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. You can either sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor or sit on the floor in a simple crossed leg position. Place your hands over each thigh, but not touching, with the palms facing upwards

and open. This is called Surrendered Mudra. A Mudra is a Hindu, Jain and Buddhist tradition and is a position where fingers and hands are placed in a certain way. While some Mudras involve the entire body, most focus on the hands and fingers. Each Mudra has a different purpose. “Follow these simple exercises to help stay connected to Source and grounded to the earth.” You will probably be familiar with Dhyana Mudra. Here the tips of the index finger and thumb are connected on both hands, leaving the three other fingers open. The index fingers represent direction to and from the Divine. The thumb represents the head and mind. This Mudra is used to still the mind. Interestingly, each finger

This is useful to prevent the lower mind/ego, held in the Solar Plexus/ diaphragm area, from chattering. Also, at higher levels of meditation, it is useful for transcendence, which is why one often sees Buddha statues in this pose. Therefore, it is a useful Mudra to quiet the mind prior to learning and developing the lower chakra exercises, but is not beneficial during the practice. So, for our purposes, we work with surrendered or receptive Mudra - palms open, so that energy flows freely through your whole system. Follow steps 1 to 4 as described below. 1. Invoke 2. Connect to Grace - for instructions on step 1 and 2, please refer to Enlighten Up column in issue #4. 3. Draw energy in from above, pausing at the

energy base of your spine/Root Chakra. Use the energy and the exhalation of your breath to grow a big tap-root from the base of your spine deep into the earth.

Now three more breaths.

4. Grow it down beyond where any human hand or machine has touched. Deep and strong like an old oak tree.

“go out into nature where there are trees”

Repeat this three times, using the energy from Source with the power of your intention and breath. On the second time, grow the tap-root deeper and wider. On the third time, grow the tap-root double in width. Now repeat the breath three more times. On the second intake of three breaths, grow subsidiary and supportive roots around the tap root, deep and wide into the Earth.

Each time, draw energy up from the earth with gratitude in your heart and hold the energy in the root chakra for your count of six.

To complete: Take a deep breath in, drawing the energies in from both the earth and the Source. Merge them in unconditional love in your heart chakra, and then expand the combined energy out in all directions. Give thanks to your team, the Divine and the tree. Another lovely practice is to bless the earth at the end of each session. See the earth as a small ball in front of your heart chakra. Raise your hands to chest

level, with the palms facing outward. Project love to the earth, giving it thanks for all it selflessly provides. Ask that it has clean air, water and soil and the perfect amount of sunlight. Ask that all sentient life upon the earth be blessed with good health, wellbeing and love. “Take care of your base chakra and grow a strong root system.” Next month, we’ll discuss the Bija Mantras and how they can complement these mediations and really get energy moving through the chakras. Have a magnificent month and enjoy your journey!

SCORPIO water boil, and water puts out fire. Water is the element associated with feelings and emotions, hence Scorpio’s penchant for the cold emotions of depression and despair or the hot emotions of lust, rage and jealousy. If you can’t stand the heat, best stay out of the Scorpio bedroom!

Scorpio: Bringing Light to the Darkness “We do not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making the darkness conscious.” Carl Jung

Co-ruled by both planet Pluto - death and rebirth and by red planet Mars - the god of war and passion, Scorpio is the fieriest water sign. Hot water or ice fire are both fitting images. Fire makes

That is a cautionary warning, not quite an ultimatum, yet have you noticed how Scorpio is given to issuing ultimatums? A classic is “It’s all or nothing.” Threats are another favourite form of discourse, such as, “If you see her again, you’re dead meat.” Funnily enough, some people seem to love that kind of challenge. Or, at least, it seems to hook them in. Mention of hooks and dead meat reminds me of the Sumerian myth of Inanna, the Queen of Heaven’s descent into the

Fyodor Dostoevsky

underworld domain of her sister Ereshkigal, ‘Lady of the Great Place Below’. She is progressively stripped naked and, at her lowest ebb, ravaged with her carcass hung on a hook to rot. When you consider that it is the fate of many a Scorpio to experience such extremes of suffering, it may be understood how their famous passion may transmute into compassion, which then becomes the underlying wellspring of their life and work. “Evolved Scorpios harness their passionate martial energy to fight for the armies of virtue…”

French writer, Albert Camus, author of The Plague, may speak for many when he writes: “I have such a strong desire to help reduce the sum of unhappiness and bitterness which empoisons mankind.” Sufi mystic Rumi penetrates to the core of Scorpionic

astrology suffering, when he writes: “The soul is a newly skinned hide, bloody and gross. Work on it with manual discipline and the bitter tanning acid of grief and you’ll become lovely and very strong. If you can’t do this work yourself, don’t worry. You don’t even have to make a decision, one way or another. The Friend, who knows a lot more than you do, will bring difficulties, grief and sickness. As medicine, as happiness, as the essence of the moment when you’re beaten, when you hear checkmate and can finally say, with Hallaj’s voice – “I trust you to kill me.”” Bubba Free John

Rumi scholar Andrew Harvey, may further inspire Scorpio with this excerpt from his autobiography Hidden Journey: “Without that first wound [being put in boarding school and thus being separated from his beloved mother] I would not have needed love so much, or been prepared to risk everything in its search. From the deepest wound of

my life, grew its miraculous possibility.” Evolved Scorpios harness their passionate, martial energy to fight for the armies of virtue in the eternal battle between good and evil, both in themselves and in the wider society. They possess the requisite strength and courage to confront and integrate their own dark side, which task, when successfully accomplished, frees them to engage in the great work of healing and transforming dysfunction, disease, and corruption in the wider society. These types make wonderful therapists, forensic psychologists, nurses, doctors, social workers, child protection workers, foster parents, fire fighters, soldiers, police, parents and friends too, especially in times of crisis. When the going gets tough and the weak get going, you can count on Scorpio to stand firm when the pressure is on. “The ‘dark night of the soul’ preceding enlightenment holds no terrors, for this is just a normal night for them.”

For Scorpio, it is evident that, what is considered to be ‘dark’ and ‘light’,, is a prime example of what in Buddhist doctrine is called, the codependent origination of all polarities. How can you buy without selling, have a

front without a back, good without evil, light without a shadow? And of course, the reverse applies also. Even the darkest, most evil characters, are not without some good in them. Scorpio writers often explore this theme, typically displaying penetrating insight into the darker motivations of human behaviour. For example, Fyodor Dostoevsky in Crime and Punishment. As should be clear by now, Scorpio’s are well equipped to meet the inevitable trials and tribulations of life on the spiritual path. The ‘dark night of the soul’ preceding enlightenment holds no terrors, for this is just a normal night for them. And if that dark night includes hellish nightmares, the psychoanalysis of Scorpio Ascendant Sigmund Freud can always be used to reveal their hidden meaning. And although attachment to sex, money, power, control and intensity will certainly provide many acid tests, Scorpio knows that, “What is to give light must endure burning.” Victor Frankel

Happy Haunting: Melbourne Paranormal Conference 2019 by Gary Sullivan

the history of ghost hunting and tours in South Australia. Drew Sinton from the Haunted Melbourne Bookshop gave his speech via video and spoke about the addiction of paranormal investigating and how it would consume you.

“This conference was set up as a show of unity, or ‘Para-unity’.” Unfortunately, I have limited space so I can’t mention every person who spoke, but there was a great show of strength when it came to speeches on Para-unity.

G’day folks. Thanks again for stopping by to read my page. Last month, I was invited to be a guest speaker at the inaugural Melbourne Paranormal Conference and Expo, hosted by the lovely Soula Vaitsis from Australian Paranormal Adventures. Anthony Kilner and I were representing Forever Haunted and talking about our style of paranormal investigation techniques. There were many guest speakers from around

38

Supernal Magazine

Australia and globally via video, some of whom I know quite well, and others who are new to the field. This conference was set up as a show of unity, or ‘Para-unity’. One of the well-known speakers was Bill Tabone, from Australian Paranormal Society. Bill spoke passionately about people’s truths and what they mean to them, when it comes to paranormal Investigating. Allen Tiller from Haunting Australia also spoke about

Now to my question: “What is Para-unity, and what does it mean?” If I was to sum it up in my own words, it would mean all paranormal groups supporting one another, rather than cutting others down for the sake of money or fame. However, can this ever exist? Only time will tell. Far too much emphasis is placed on Para-unity, but not enough action is being taken. This conference was the first step to achieving it, thanks to Soula and her dedicated team. What needs to happen now is to put action behind words and unite teams all around

paranormal Australia to work together. This would be via investigation teams and tour operators coming together to share their knowledge and skills and seek answers to age old questions. Who? Why? Where? What? Are spirits or ghosts real? I don’t believe that we will ever find the answers, as some things will be forever unanswerable, but let’s at least acknowledge one another’s beliefs and techniques and share what we all know. Together we can accomplish much more. Many of us have been a part of the paranormal community for many years and have seen a large number of groups come and go. Usually the end goal seems to be money or fame, either to have their own TV show or be self-proclaimed experts in the field. To be known as Professional Investigators.

“The main objective here folks, is to just get out there, share the love and have fun.” The latter doesn’t exist, as none of us have the answers yet. As for the former, I say go for it. It’s a lot harder than it looks, but don’t give this field a bad name by making self-proclamations that simply aren’t true. It just leaves a stain on the paranormal community, letting the public think that we, as a group, are all the same. There are some good people out there who are a part of the paranormal

community, some are identified and others just continuously work hard in the background, without being acknowledged.

“I don’t believe that we will ever find the answers, as some things will be forever un-answerable…” I know there are a number of teams from around Australia that are joining forces to investigate together, sharing their knowledge and techniques. It’s a great step forward, but we need more teams doing it, or even asking questions of those who have been around for some time. Remember, there is no right or wrong answers in this field, just personal experiences, which may help in the grand scheme of things. The main objective here folks, is to just get out there, share the love and have fun. We are not wagering cattle stations or our lives on it, simply enjoying the experience with like-minded people. Try and you may be surprised by the outcome.

Over the Rainbow LGBTQIA+ Days of Significance by Celeste de Vis The civil rights fight for equality in the LGBTQIA+ community has been ongoing globally for decades. LGBTQIA+ human rights movements are shaking down discrimination, bigotry and injustice all over the world. The all-encompassing fight still has a long way to go however, it is important that we truly recognise how far the fight for the right to live authentically has actually come. Just look at Victoria in the last few years. Family Court of Australia cleared the way for young trans people to access Stage 2 hormone treatment without court authorisation. Also, both Marriage equality and Birth Certificate reform have been achieved in

Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory for trans and gender diverse people. LGBTQIA+ Days of Significance have helped us to accomplish that. This month, I thought that I would share with you some of the important days of awareness and significance in the LGBTQIA+ community.

MARCH 1st

Zero Discrimination Day was first celebrated by the United Nations on March 1st, 2014, after UNAIDS, a United Nations program on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), launched its Zero Discrimination Campaign on World AIDS Day in the

December of 2013. Discrimination continues to undermine efforts to achieve a more just and equitable world and causes pain and suffering for many. Discrimination has many forms, from racial or religious discrimination to discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation or age, to bullying at school or at work.

MARCH 31st

International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual holiday celebrated around the world. The day is dedicated to the accomplishments and victories of transgender and gender non-conforming people, while raising awareness of the work that is still needed to save trans lives. The holiday was founded in 2009 as a response to the lack of LGBTQIA+ holidays recognising transgender people’s successes.

LGBTQI+

MAY 17th

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was created in 2004, to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions and sex characteristics. The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

MAY 24th

Pansexuality Day of Visibility is to celebrate, draw attention to and raise awareness for pan identities. The word originally comes from Greek, ‘pan’ which means ‘all’. People who identify as pansexual can potentially be attracted by other individuals, regardless of their biological sex or the gender they feel they belong to.

JULY 14th

International Non-Binary People’s Day is observed each year. Non-binary, also known as genderqueer, is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine; identities that are outside the gender binary. This also includes being third gender

Photographer unknown c/o @chigacotribune

or other-gendered, a category that includes those who do not place a name to their gender.

SEPTEMBER 23rd

Celebrate Bisexuality Day also known as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, has been marked each year since 1999, to highlight biphobia and to help people find the bisexual community.

OCTOBER 8th

International Lesbian Day (ILD) is celebrated around the world annually. The day marks lesbians coming together to celebrate lesbian culture.

OCTOBER 22-28, 2019

Asexual Awareness Week is an international campaign that seeks to educate about the spectrum of asexuality and to create materials that are accessible to the Ace community and their allies around the world. The asexual community use the word Ace to encompass anyone who fits within the spectrum of asexuality. An asexual person experiences

little to no sexual attraction and/or sexual desire.

OCTOBER 26th

Intersex Awareness Day is a day to highlight the human rights issues faced by intersex people. October 26, 1996 marks the anniversary of the first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States. An intersex person is someone who doesn’t fit the typical definition of male or female, as they may have variations in their chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones or genitals.

NOVEMBER 20th

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honours the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of antitransgender violence. Globally, people participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender people and address the issues trans people face.

mentalist False Idols I knew they existed. I had seen the pictures of the glamorous, picture perfect gurus posing at fabulous temples, forests or beaches. Although, it was not until a recent trip to Bali that I came face to face with these professional ‘influencers’ in real life. As most spiritual people (and tourists) do, we visited all the main temples. Besakih the Mother temple, Ulun Danu Batur in Kintaman, the Bat Temple, the Elephant Cave and many more - taking in the atmosphere and the energy of these places that are beautiful and sacred although a little over touristy at times. My first encounter was at Taman Saraswati, the Water Temple. I noticed a young

44

man dressed in a black silk Gi top and matching sari pants complete with sash, the most perfect man bun and trimmed beard. He was striking a pose midway on a set of steps, with the temple behind him, being photographed by a friend (or assistant) with an SLR camera. At first I thought nothing of it, just maybe some random professional photo shoot, until we began to encounter more of these creatures that came from all over the world, to perform their ceremonial photo dance.

“She promptly walked away, presumably looking for another wonderful backdrop she would equally ignore.” Next, there was a female of the species primping her feathery dress and adjusting her wide brimmed hat and sunglasses between choreographed jumps, while her mate, somewhat fed up with the ritual, snapped away. Between each shot, the picture was examined and commands were

uttered. The one that really got me was the young lady in a flowing summer gown, evening heels, the war paint porcelain perfect and foot long eye lashes, with the largest selfie stick I have ever seen. This particular variation of the species had no mate. She was walking backwards toward the main temple, stopping every few feet for another pose until she made her way to the foot of the steps, not once actually looking at the great temple. Once she reached her destination, the selfie stick was snapped closed, heels came off and she promptly walked away, presumably looking for another wonderful backdrop she would equally ignore.

mental health Images by Jason D Varga and Pixabay

by Jason D Varga This sort of thing is becoming more and more prevalent. It is not just confined to the spiritual community; it has become a way of life for thousands of people from all walks of life! These people are dubbed ‘influencers’ that make the rest of us feel somewhat ordinary. We follow them in the hope that we will someday raise to their lofty heights. Unfortunately, the reality is that the representation of their lives on social media rarely reflects their true lives. Most of the time, these individuals are self-absorbed and could potentially be regarded as narcissistic. The only thing that can be admired about them

is the hard work they put into creating their online illusionary lives.

“That which you reflect, becomes your reality.” The illusion is not just confined to pictures - I came across a social media profile recently that had been cleverly edited as ‘A VIP with 30,141 followers, the country’s No.1 coach that could grow your business to 6 figures.’ Upon searching this person’s About info, it was revealed they actually had a little over 500 followers. I also had a sneaking suspicion that their own income was far below what they professed to be able to help others to achieve. In the real world, this would be considered misleading or false advertising. I fear that these people and their followers will end up having a very unrealistic expectation of life. When their looks fade and their funds run dry, where will they be? The main danger here is for the young and

impressionable who follow these people, hoping for some Master Secret of the Universe to be imparted. They will grow up with such inflated expectations, only to fall into depression when faced with the reality of life. So, the next time you see a beautiful spiritual guru with legs crossed and palms together in prayer, sitting in front of a waterfall in splendid clothes, looking too good to be true and with the promise of universal secrets, ask yourself is this reality or is this an illusion?

“I had seen the pictures of the glamorous, picture perfect gurus posing at fabulous temples, forests or beaches.” That which you reflect, becomes your reality, make sure the mirror isn’t empty. Express yourself honestly, be you, be true, and be wary of False Idols. ESPecially best wishes, The Mentalist

Calming Storms with Good Communication By Derran Heney RN Mental Health Professional

Communication seems simple, yet it is so complex and can very easily go down the wrong path. Interestingly, non-verbal communication like gestures, body language and eye contact, have greater influence in what we are trying to convey than what we actually say. However, getting our message right is just as important. Different people can interpret the same message differently, depending on

46

Supernal Magazine

their perception of previous life experiences, their feelings, thoughts, attitudes and emotions. For a number of reasons, it can be very easy for communication and the message we are trying to convey, to be less effective than we had hoped for. Choosing the right time to have a conversation is the key. You can do this by noticing how the person may be feeling prior to approaching them - are they tired, stressed, busy? It’s best to have a good conversation when all concerned are feeling in the right place and have the time to talk. When applying empathy, extend yourself past your own experiences and try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Your understanding of the situation is the most effective way to communicate compassionately and effectively. If a person feels heard and understood, it goes a long way

towards maintaining good communication, but you do also have to show your interest and convey a commitment to the conversation.

“Choosing the right time to have a conversation is the key.” What usually gets in the way of healthy communication are our defences. For example, when we feel hurt or under attack from feeling not heard accurately or with compassion, feeling not understood or respected and feeling judged or criticised. If we want to be heard and understood, we should listen for the feelings and needs of the other person. Maybe their communication style is different to our own. You can try to guess another person’s feelings and needs if the person is unable to directly express their needs to you.

mental health You could try asking these questions: • Are you feeling…? • Do you need…? Remember to focus on the feelings and needs of the other person equally. It is good to remind ourselves that it is not just about one person. Stay focused on these feelings to avoid the common trap of getting into blame and attacking. In this way, the conversation does not divert away from the common goal. We all like to be heard. We each have our own emotions and experiences and communication is all about listening for the key points a person is conveying. It is not a good idea to tell them they are not feeling a particular way or that their experience of a situation is incorrect. Try to aim for understanding and stay curious as to their experiences! It is their experience, even if it is in stark contrast to your own.

“Take time to be present, listen fully and acknowledge the feelings and needs of the person.” Breathe deeply - phew. If you feel like you are Photo Credit: Pixabay

becoming overwhelmed by emotions or frustration, maybe you need to call time out and come back at another time, rather than trying to continue riding an injured horse (so to speak).

Another good rule of thumb is to mirror the behaviour, the attitude and body language that you wish to see in another. For example, if a person is losing their calm, be calm and use calming, sincere language in all you say. Also, remain aware of your contribution to the conversation and pay attention to the possibilities of why the other person may be feeling differently moment to moment. There are always good clues in communication. Body language is super important and can also be distracting, especially if it is not congruent with what you are saying. Always be aware of how positively you are carrying yourself. Take time to be present, listen fully and acknowledge the feelings and needs of

the person. Open questions are great because you are inviting conversation and expression of their feelings. Being open and flexible in your conversation can lead the way to dissolve any conflict. Perhaps agree to disagree on a given situation but work to resolve the underlying issue. Maybe take time to consider ideas, rather than keeping going over the same ground. Meet up again, when some time has passed to re-discuss, but don’t go back to the original topic. This means you are talking about and working with strategies to resolve the conflict. Aim for a win-win resolution if possible - keep it positive!

“…communication is all about listening for the key points a person is conveying.” If conflict is longer lasting, an experienced mediator or counsellor can be super useful to help diffuse the situation and keep things on track. Healthy Seasonal Foods By Jane Offer

A wee d is just a flower “A weed is just a flower growing in the wrong place. Cecelia Ahern (author).

Spring time is all about weeding. At this time of year, it is nonstop and like painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge – by the time you get to the end its time to start again! However, as we resentfully pull up the intruders, we could spare a thought to their benefits, not only to our wildlife but also to our own health. Here are a couple that we are all familiar with, that seem to appear overnight. Chickweed (Stellaria media) is an annual weed, from the carnation family of plants. It was native to Europe but is now thought to be common in most parts of the world. It is widely used as a vegetable crop, a food

48 Supernal Magazine

source for poultry and in herbal remedies. Plus, the nectar from the flowers is very beneficial to native butterflies, and the seeds to many bird species. With weak, slender long reaching stems, covered with tiny

white flowers, this plant is prolific. It has the ability to flower and seed at the same time, hence its fast spreading nature. Look away and there is a chickweed carpet by the time you look back!

Recorded in the 17th century by herbalist John Gerard as a skin treatment, modern herbalists still prescribe it for a wide variety of conditions. These include anaemia, constipation, stomach and bowel conditions, obesity, bronchitis, rheumatic and arthritic pains and skin conditions. Chickweed contains high levels of Vitamin A, B and C and is a good source of iron and calcium. With high iron content, chickweed is a common ingredient in over the counter iron supplements. It also has antiinflammatory, antiseptic and antifungal properties and is used as an ingredient in topical ointments to help with rashes, skin irritation, psoriasis and eczema. Chickweed health products are available in powder, drop, tablet and ointment form. However, if you are pulling up a chickweed patch, apply some of its milky

health and wellbeing

excretion to itchy skin conditions, a boil, abscess or ulcer to get some relief.

“Spring time is all about weeding …” Dandelion (Taraxacum Officinale) is probably one of the most common and recognisable varieties of edible weeds. It’s very versatile and has been celebrated in herbal medicine for centuries as a powerhouse of wellness. It can be viewed as another nuisance weed with its deep root that often breaks as you pull it up; you just know the wretched thing will simply grow back when you are distracted elsewhere. However, dandelion provides many health benefits; its yellow petals are edible, its leaves are a tasty addition to a salad or can be cooked like spinach and the root, when roasted, makes a good alternative to coffee. Dandelion leaves are an excellent source of Vitamin A and K, calcium, potassium, iron and can be used as an effective diuretic. It’s a nutritious leafy green,

equal in value to any in your veggie patch. Dandelion Root is an effective liver tonic and can stimulate appetite after illness. It is rich in inulin, a type of soluble fibre, which supports the growth and maintenance of healthy gut flora. Apart from being edible, the bright yellow flowers can cause a mood boost after the long days of the winter months. Yellow is the first colour of spring, if you think about it daffodils, wattle, yellow oxalis – so many bright blooms.

“(Taraxacum Officinale) is probably one of the most common and recognisable varieties of edible weeds.” In addition to its highly nutritious qualities, this plant has many benefits to our ecology. In early spring, when flowering plants are scarce, pollinating bees and butterflies emerge, dependant on dandelions as an early source of pollen and nectar. Later the seeds feed a wide variety of birds. Without this balance of nature, as a species we would be in real trouble.

Over centuries, even the most poisonous plants have been utilised to provide healing remedies. Deadly Nightshade (Belladonna) is just such a plant. No-one would eat it, as the berries are known to be highly toxic but, distilled in the correct way, herbalists have recognised it as a sedative, to stop bronchial spasms in asthma and whooping cough and as an effective cold and hay fever remedy. It is also used for Parkinson’s disease, colic, inflammatory bowel disease, motion sickness and as a painkiller. So maybe the next time you are weeding, just know that every plant on the planet has a purpose; not to annoy us but to aid our health and wellness in some way. Note: Do not go into the garden and randomly eat what you find. Most plants are used in natural products are available over the counter, so take advantage of that, ensuring they are from a reputable and safe source.

Discovering Ayurveda By Liesl Horne

Getting to know your ‘Prakruti’ When you visit an Ayurvedic practitioner for the first time, they will look for the whole picture that you present in order to understand your ‘Prakruti.’ Prakruti in Sanskrit means ‘original creation’ and refers to your specific physiological nature, which is determined at the time of conception and continues throughout your life. Knowing your constitutional ‘body type’ in Ayurveda includes your physical, mental and emotional nature. Consider it your own personal blue print. An essential part of understanding your prakruti is learning to identify the specific strengths and weaknesses that make up

50

Supernal Magazine

your innate qualities and tendencies. Ayurveda explains that each person has a unique combination of the three dosha’s - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Although the signs of the three dosha’s are everywhere, governing the physical processes of the body, they are not actually visible to the eye. In my previous articles, I introduce you to the five elements that make up the three dosha’s - which you may like to refer to. The dosha’s are continually fluctuating, trying to find balance within the external environment in relation to the conditions of your own nature. Being able to recognise when a particular dosha becomes accumulated or depleted, allows us to make the necessary changes to support and bring alignment to our prakruti.

When the dosha’s are in harmony, they will express with the following positive psychological traits: Vata - creative, insightful, spontaneous, flexible, invigorating Pitta - confident, intellectual, dynamic, bright, resourceful Kapha - energised, calm, kind, steady, forgiving, loving Each of the body types has unique qualities and is also prone to various imbalances. Vata is unbalanced when there is anxiety, fear, pain, spasms, chills and excessive dryness. Pitta is unbalanced when there is excessive heat, thirst or hunger, hot flushes, fever and acid indigestion. Kapha is unbalanced when there is congestion, excessive mucus and fluid retention, lethargy, feeling sluggish or heavy. One of the empowering benefits of Ayurveda is paying close attention to the little signs that are often ignored. Rather than ignore these signals, you are encouraged to observe and understand yourself

health and wellbeing as the five elements in the food combine with your own elements.

in a deeper sense, as a unique individual. A hot summer’s day for example, will affect each person differently, depending on their prakruti, environment and most prominent dosha. Vata types tend to thrive if there is no wind, which can increase dryness and irritation. They prefer the warmth of the sun instead, as they often feel cold. Those with more Pitta, find the searing heat intolerable unless they are near water to cool off. Kapha constitution enjoys the dry heat but will struggle with humidity. Including the right types of food in your diet is also of the utmost importance. What is easily digested by one person can be problematic for another

A Vata type person who has a lot of air qualities in their constitution, benefits from foods that are more grounding and slightly heavy, to balance the ‘lightness’ of the air element. If you have more Pitta in your constitution, the foods that can be helpful are the ones that are soothing, cooling and less heating. Spicy or sour foods will add to the already ‘hot’ qualities of a Pitta type person. To balance the earth and water qualities that make up Kapha, a diet that is lighter, drier and more stimulating is beneficial whilst avoiding heavier sweet foods such as bread, cakes and pasta. An example of how a particular food affects each person differently can be found with tomatoes, which have the qualities of being acidic, stimulating, sweet and sour. They are heating to the digestive system, whilst being cooling to the blood. Vata constitution can tolerate tomatoes moderately when cooked, which releases their sweetness. The acidic quality can be too fiery for Pitta constitution, whilst those with Kapha dosha can benefit from the heating and acidic qualities.

In the same way, drinking a cup of coffee can be a very different experience for each of the body types. It has the potential to send Vata into overdrive with its stimulating and drying properties, leaving you feeling ungrounded and ‘spacey.’ You might like to consider ginger tea or roasted dandelion blend for your morning beverage instead. Pitta constitution can benefit from a little natural sweetener in their coffee, such as maple syrup and a little milk, to counteract the heating qualities that can be aggravating to them. For Kapha dosha, coffee in moderation has a stimulating effect on the mind and body without the heavier additions of milk and a sweetener. Ayurveda provides a highly individual approach to maintaining your health. Embracing who you are and knowing your basic tendencies, leads to a greater sense of awareness for the choices that are right for your prakruti, helping you to find peace and happiness in life. Reflections: Jane Offer

Midst of Disaster? We need to Know Recently, a close friend’s mother died suddenly. There was no warning, she just went to sleep. It was a very peaceful way to go, but deeply shocking for the family. Each of her granddaughters has decided to have a piece of jewellery made, embossed with her fingerprint. It’s a lovely memory and it got me thinking. There are about eight billion people on this planet and each one of us has a completely different fingerprint. Then, there are all the people from the beginning of time, each with their own pattern. That is a lot of differences! But it makes one statement – we are all unique through our differences not from our sameness. Therefore, wouldn’t it be sensible to embrace those differences, drop judgement and live in peace and harmony together as one community.

52

Supernal Magazine

“Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.” Elvis Presley For centuries, people have lived in groups, knowing it is a vital part of our journey in life. We search constantly for like-minded people, a soul mate and are encouraged in many self-help books to ‘find our tribe’. At this time, we are probably the most isolated we have ever been without even realising it.

not even in touch with the earth beneath our feet, living as we do in our highrise apartment buildings. Our connection to others is being whittled away and yet we know more about what’s happening in the world that we ever did.

Social media reflects friends at a distance; there is no eye-to-eye conversation, our ears do not hear the tone of words of support or comfort and certainly there is no gentle touch on our arm when we are feeling sad or confused.

We need people to talk to, to share experiences and we want to help others. It is woven into our nature as human beings. When we are denied this, for whatever reason, we become isolated and alone. We hear about the isolation of our old people, with figures showing that 1 in 3 are suffering from loneliness and have not spoken to another person for at least a month.

We do not know our neighbours; many of us are

The figures for depression and even suicide of our

health and wellbeing young people, especially young men, is frightening and the incidence across the board of mental health issues manifesting, is rocketing at an alarming rate. “There are about eight billion people on this planet and each one of us has a completely different fingerprint.”

Developing community is the key to our peace of mind and our joy. The exploration of different people’s life styles, their culture and their beliefs, leads to inclusion and understanding. When we stick only to our ‘own’, we become narrow and fearful with no opportunity to grow and develop awareness, either of ourselves or of others. It is important to realise that background doesn’t matter, that we all have similar concerns and the same need to thrive. We need food, a roof over our head, a job and to keep our children safe. We can’t do that in isolation, we need to be in, and of, a community. Everyone has their own way of being. We each have our own uniqueness, our fingerprint to leave behind.

Do we always like what we see or learn about others? Of course not, why would we? Let’s face it, we don’t always like the way our family conducts itself, so it’s obvious the same would apply to strangers. “Developing community is the key to our peace of mind and our joy.”

We can view the differences with judgement or we can choose to see it as a gift, a challenge that pushes us to be better. Therefore, to build community we must have conflict and, in that conflict, we can learn to negotiate. Who says we are right and others are wrong? What if there is value in both opinions? It is up to us to make our fingerprint mean something, to leave a

legacy. And we need to do it together! Being part of a community is about taking personal responsibility for our thoughts and actions and also our ability to look inward. It is the uncovering, seeing, accepting, working with, and through, our own imperfections, not the imperfections of others. When we suspend judgement, let go of the need to be right and see the differences as the many parts of a beautiful whole, then our community becomes a splendid reflection of tolerance and love.

Health, Well-Being, & Holistic Healing Arts By Joti Gore

Yoga & Ayurveda: Balance for the Urban Yogi Dr. David Frawley, author of Yoga and Ayurveda and teacher of Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology and Yoga, stated that, “Yoga and Ayurveda is the science of selfrealization and self-healing.” It is believed that yogic methods span from physical, emotional, mental and spiritual to self-realisation. Dharma Singh Khalsa provides examples of these methods and the clinical uses for Ayurveda and Yoga in his books, Meditation as Medicine and Food as Medicine. What is Yoga and Ayurveda? Yoga is believed to have originated thousands of years ago. It is a system of physical postures, breathing techniques, sensory methods, prayers, affirmations, mantras and Mudras or hand positions

used to achieve a balanced place of health, wellbeing, and understanding. Ayurveda, similar to yoga, has a diverse history and is a holistic medicinal approach to achieve a balanced state of wellness physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually through diet, exercise, yoga, meditation and lifestyle choices. The Urban Yogi Yoga of the Western culture is amongst the high rises, bustling cities and quaint neighbourhoods, where there are 60-90 minute classes of Asana or physical postures, often heated

for comfort. Yoga, in this setting, often has a catchy spiritual phrase, in a one liner that is followed by a photo opportunity for Instagram. However, if you look beyond the superficial, there is a real opportunity to explore self-love, happiness, wellbeing and an authentic connection to something beyond yourself. The integrative approach of yoga and Ayurveda can lead to a profound experience. Ayurveda suggests that we fit into a combination of three Gunas and Doshas. The Three Gunas “Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, the qualities born of nature bind the immortal soul in the body.” Bhagavad Gita.

Sattva is the quality of light, love and higher frequency or Divine force and has virtues of faith, modesty and truth. Rajas is stimulating and active - a positive force that promotes change. Tamas is a passive or negative force that keeps us the same. It is believed all three forces are necessary to have equilibrium.

health and wellbeing “Sattva giving rise to the mind, rajas generating life force, and tamas creating form and substance through which thephysical body comes into being Dr. Frawley.

“Vata, Pitta and Kapha are called the three supports. Knowing this group of three as the sacred threefold mantra OM, the wise are liberated.” Brihat Yogi Yajnavalkya Smriti 11:25. It is believed these three Doshas determine our experience and condition with living, processing and ageing. The Doshas can give insight on our propensities to particular diseases and disorders, food tolerances, climates where we would thrive and our mental impulses. The Doshas can even indicate your Ayurvedic constitution, assisting in the decision of what style of yoga, postures, pranayama or breathing techniques and meditations are best suited for your body type. Vata Dosha: In Sanskrit, Vata means wind. This is believed to be the air, physically in the spaces of the body

Numerology by ShirleySienna

The thing about numbers is that there is only nine of them plus a zero, yet we can count into the trillions and beyond with just those nine. The power of zero is to enhance each number a specific amount of times to show its value. This month of October is the 10th month and its value is one, enhanced by a single zero and multiplied x10. New beginnings are indicated for all, no matter your birthday, October heralds in the vibration of a ‘new start allowance’ and incoming personal year vibrations. They say one is the loneliest number that there ever was, but that is a reflection of self-worth, self-realisation and self-love. Zero doesn’t mean anything; it holds the universal power for multiplication of the whole. October wants you take a close look in the mirror, and see the reflection of the ‘one’ looking back at you!

Quote of the Month “In the end, we won’t be judged as a society solely by our growth statistics of economic activity graphs. We will be judged by the quality of the life that we foster for all members of the community and the compassion we show for the disadvantaged.” Carmen Lawrence Born on 2nd March 1948, Carmen Lawrence was one of seven children born to farming parents in Northam WA. Carmen developed a love of learning, and as an academic studied Psychology at the University of Western Australia. Carmen obtained a doctorate in 1983 with her work titled: Maternal Responses to Infant Crying. In 1990, she was the first female to become a Premier of an Australian State, a position she held for three years before entering Federal Parliament in 1994. After leaving politics in 2007, Carmen returned to academia as a Psychology Professor at the University of Western Australia. 56
