Exploring the NDIS & the Paranormal!

This month, we take a look at people involved with the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) and how it works. It’s been an interesting ride and I’ve heard lots of horror stories as well as lots of positive ones, which makes this topic a hot one.

I have been talking with people (some who will remain nameless), who work in the system and while it seems the NDIS process is hard at times, it’s about understanding what the system is about, how it works and the language required to work through it and make create a successful plan that works.

I was told that the NDIS is about helping people with a disability. It’s designed to help those people who have lost or do not have a functional capacity to live life unaided. This essentially means that there are many people out there with a

disability whose lives are still functional, and therefore they don’t get the support they feel they might need.

The rough figure I heard was only one third of people affected will get support. The system has to be funded by tax payers and, regardless of what anyone thinks, it has to be implemented, in the best way it can to help those most in need. We can’t go back from here, so it’s onward and upward. I can’t see that ending the NDIS scheme would be a positive solution, and there are plenty of people attempting to make it effective.

The NDIS is all about understanding the language, which includes understanding what is necessary versus what is reasonable. This, of course, has to be backed up by evidence. It seems the problems begin on contacting the NDIS hotline. Often wrong information is given out causing untold stress to those trying to access help. The word is that this is going to change as people on the phones become better trained in understanding the system more fully.

There are, of course, many people who can’t contact the system due to their disability and this is where there are some amazing corporations out there offering help. This appears to be a doubleedged sword though, but there is light at the end of the NDIS tunnel. Patience, attention to detail and finding the right door seems to be the best way forward.

There’s also more information available at www.ndis.com.au I hope this issue shines a better light on the NDIS and how it is helping people live a better life and achieve their goals and dreams!

Blaise van Hecke from Busybird Publishing has contributed a great interview with Christine Stow and her daughter with Schwartz-Jampel Syndrome while Deputy Editor Christina has added her feature interview to the mix, a beautiful story with Shelley Brown and her daughter Kiah. Then we have several interviews with some incredible people who have come through the NDIS system with varied results.

Soula Vaitsis organised the event, with the conference running over a Saturday afternoon and evening. Wow, it was interesting. There were guest speakers, video packages from people who couldn’t make it including a large overseas contingent. Soula also had guests from Queensland, NSW, SA and WA. What I especially liked about the gathering was that everyone was looking at para-unity and, while that might seem a bit odd in the paranormal field, I definitely think there’s a lot that can be done to share experiences, raise the professionalism of paranormal investigation and genuinely care about ethics.

I was lucky enough to chat to virtually everyone attending but not to the depth I’d like. There are plenty more yarns to swap with many of these people and maybe plenty to share within these pages.

I also want to mention the beautiful cover shot by Kev Howlett, Art Director. It captures so much love and emotion – I think it’s pretty special.

I think Soula and her team did a great job getting people from all over Oz together and it’s set to get bigger and better next year.

All in all there’s plenty to read in your spare time!

Rounding out this issue, we have some amazing stories, both from guest writers and our regular columnists, jam packed from cover to cover. At least the web equivalent of covers!

World Suicide Prevention Day 10 September 2019 marked World Suicide Prevention Day across the globe and provided a unique opportunity to collectively shine a light on suicide prevention, both politically and at a community level. Harnessing this momentum is critical to ensure productive and meaningful solutions are put in place to drive suicide rates down.

Suicide Prevention Australia CEO, Nieves Murray said, “Never before have we seen so much political attention focused on suicide prevention. Governments at a state and national level are focused and some are now calling suicide prevention a priority.

It is a national tragedy that we lose so many people to suicide. We can all make a difference in the lives of those who might be struggling, by having regular, meaningful conversations about life’s ups and downs. Working together to prevent suicide, raise awareness and encourage conversations is important,” said Ms Murray.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide. Choices we make today can help prevent suicide. Suicide prevention remains a universal challenge. Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally, for people of all ages. Some conversations can be too big for friends and family. If you’re worried about someone and feel they need professional support, encourage them to connect with a trusted health professional like their GP. Suicide is a prominent community concern in Australia with the ABS reporting 3,128 deaths by suicide in 2017. Globally, it is responsible for over 800,000 deaths.

Jobs at Supernal Magazine Supernal is looking for help and have two positions to fill. We are looking for an intern who wants to work in the media. They would have to be able to travel to Research in Melbourne. The role would be to work on various components of the magazine from editing to writing, researching and more.

Lectins – Good or Bad? What are Lectins? Are They Bad for You? Are lectins causing my inflammation?

Forks over Knives Courtney Davison is quoted saying, “Last year, Dr. Steven Gundry released The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in Healthy Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain, which claimed that lectins, a type of protein in many plant foods, are the culprits behind autoimmune diseases, coronary artery disease, Type 2 diabetes, and a host of other health problems. A new fad diet was born, and a year later, lectins are still making headlines.”

What are lectins and where are they found?

Lectins, an anti-nutrient type protein that we have known about for over 100 years, can bind to sugar. This means these toxins are likely to reduce the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. This is thought to be a defence mechanism to deter animals from eating them.

Foods highest in lectin include: • Nightshade vegetables, such as tomatoes, potatoes, goji berries, peppers and eggplant • All legumes, such as lentils, beans, peanuts, and chickpeas • Peanut-based products, such as peanut butter and peanut oil • All grains and products made with grain or flour, including cakes, crackers and bread • Many dairy products, such as milk Red kidney beans To eat or not to eat that is the question? comparing the dry red kidney beans labelled toxic for human consumption due to lectins and the imported soaked beans in a can in South Africa found that before and after soaking, they were similar in toxic health risk potential.

According to Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., Endocrinology/Nutrition, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, “No scientific evidence exists to show that eliminating dietary lectins will cure any medical disorders or conditions, including autoimmune diseases. But your diet certainly can have an effect on the way you feel, especially if you have a chronic condition. If you have a medical concern triggering symptoms that seem to be related to the foods you eat, consider talking with a registered dietitian who can review your diet and offer suggestions for modifying it in a way that may help ease your symptoms.”

“In addition, most foods that contain lectins are recommended as part of a healthy, well balanced diet.

There’s a well-established body of scientific evidence that clearly supports the benefits of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The health benefits you receive from including those foods in your diet

health and wellbeing outweigh any perceived benefits from avoiding foods with lectins. With that in mind, a diet that avoids lectins is not one most dietitians would typically recommend.

“Rather than using a generalized approach and trying to apply it to everyone such as avoiding all food with lectins, a diet that’s structured and overseen by a dietitian and based on scientific evidence can be customised to accommodate a person’s individual sensitivities.

“That type of systematic approach typically yields better long-term results than just avoiding a certain kind of food or a food ingredient and hoping to feel better.”

What are the problems with lectins and what are the symptoms they may cause?

Lectins resist being broken down in the gut and are stable in acidic environments, features that protect lectin-containing plants in nature. When consumed, lectins in their active state can cause negative side effects.

The most publicised accounts, report severe reactions in people eating even small amounts of raw or undercooked kidney beans. They contain phytohemagglutinin, a

type of lectin that can cause red blood cells to clump together. It can also produce nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and diarrhoea. Milder side effects include bloating and gas. Lectins can also bind to cells lining the digestive tract disrupting the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, and affect the efficacy of intestinal flora. Lectins can cause an autoimmune response which could result in inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes.

How to reduce lectins in food It is important to remember that eating foods with a high amount of active lectins is rare. Cooking, especially with wet high-heat methods like boiling or stewing, or soaking in water for several hours, can inactivate most lectins. Lectins are watersoluble and typically found on the outer surface of a food, so exposure to water removes them.

The benefits of lectincontaining foods “Lectins can act as an antioxidant, which protects

cells from damage caused by free radicals. They also slow down digestion and the absorption of carbohydrates, which may prevent sharp rises in blood sugar and high insulin levels. These foods are rich sources of B vitamins, protein, fibre, minerals, and healthy fats. Thus, the health benefits of consuming these foods far outweigh the potential harm of lectins in these foods.” Harvard T.H. Chan, School of Public Health.

How long do I need to go lectin-free to feel a difference? How do I eat clean?

“Most people notice a difference within two weeks.

It can take two, three, four, five, or even six months to really get your gut health back. Another thing to note is that vitamin D deficiency is common which is essential to heal the walls of your gut.

Midst of Disaster? We need to Know

Many people I speak too say they have stopped watching the news or reading newspapers as it is very negative and report only a slanted view on the events we are actually allowed to know about. Media censorship is becoming more and more evident, as social media and online news services reveal what is really going on in the world.

However, social media news operates in isolation and depends on people simply scrolling through their news feed, often dismissing these types of share in favour of news of friends and family.

This has been demonstrated by the disastrous fires in the Amazon Rain Forest. As of August 27th 2019, the fires have been burning for three weeks and most of them seem to have been started by people, either farmers aiming to clear land, illegal loggers trying to cover their tracks and some by sheer negligence. In all, it is reported that upwards

These recent fires are thought by experts to be pushing the forest toward a tipping point where it may no longer be able to sustain itself.

President Emmanuel Macron has called the fires an international crisis, putting it on the agenda of the recent G7 meeting. Participating G7 countries promised €20 million in aid, which Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro rejected.

Fires and logging had been on the decline for years in the Amazon until Bolsonaro, who took office last year, made his intentions to exploit the Amazon perfectly clear.

The rain in the rainforest is not an accident of

geography or meteorology.

The towering mahogany, kapok and Brazil nut trees of the Amazon play an important part in the region’s water system. The cycle of taking in the rainwater through the tree roots and releasing it into the air, creates the clouds that in turn deposit more rain.

Add this to vital oxygen production and we can see clearly what a disaster this truly is to humanity at large.

Yet no coverage on the news!

Is there another reason for the silence?

On 12th July 2019 a couple of weeks before the fires started, it was reported

by Reuters that a court in Ecuador has upheld a ruling that prevents the government from selling half a million acres in the Amazon Rain Forest to oil companies. This move conservationists called an historic win for the Waorani indigenous tribe who have

health and wellbeing lived there for centuries. This ruling ended the years-long legal battle over the land.

When these two news items are put together and the timing considered, is this another situation where greed overrides common sense? That the need of people – and essential need at that – is secondary to the scrabble to grab more gain for the few? And what is the end to that? We all need air, don’t we?

A similar crisis is happening in our own country, again with little or no coverage.

A recent agreement by the Federal Government allows for the felling of a vast tract of ancient forest in Queensland. This is one of the few remaining natural habitats for the Australian icon, the Koala.

Australia has the dubious distinction of being the world leader on mammal

extinctions and has a terrible record on protecting biodiversity. More than 7.4 million hectares of threatened species habitat – an area larger than Tasmania – has been destroyed in the last 20 years and the national environment budget has been cut by 39.7 percent since 2013.

Andrew Picone, Nature Campaigner with the Australian Conservation Foundation, said, “In the midst of an extinction crisis we can no longer entertain the fantasy that it’s OK to destroy precious wildlife habitat so long as we promise not to destroy bushland somewhere else.

“Under current standards Australians cannot be confident that offsets are providing adequate conservation outcomes for this special Australian species.”

Again, why are we not aware of our unique native animals being destroyed in this way? At what point will we, as a people, wake up and know that once they are gone, they are gone forever?

When will we make it our business to demand a free and open press that is ethical and not selfserving? We are currently responsible for our home planet until we hand it over to the next generations – children and grandchildren.

At this rate we will be giving them a place that struggles to survive, devoid of ancient trees and only fossils of creatures that could proliferate. We need to learn how to honour the land in the same way our forefathers did, before it is all too late.

We need to know!

There is something quite magical about the promise of Spring. Tiny clusters of buds appear on bare branches, their pretty colours signalling the end of Winter and the beginning of a new season.

You too, are invited to bloom with new potential, to plant seeds of health and to lay down your roots for the remainder of the year.

It’s about shedding the accumulated ‘earth and water’ qualities of Kapha damp, wet and heavy which tend to build during Winter.

Ayurveda refers to seasonal routine as ‘Ritucharya’ – ‘ritu’ means season and ‘charya’ means to move with or to follow. Adjusting our diet and lifestyle is recommended to keep us in flow with nature, adapting to the external and internal changes that are taking place at the junction point between the old and new.

happening within us. Kapha liquefies and begins to dry whilst outside the flowers start to open and release their pollen. You may experience increased mucus, Spring

colds and allergies which often appear with this clearing out of fluid. What we observe outside in nature is also mirrored within.

Clarity of thought and mental processing can also be disturbed during this transition making us feel sleepier, foggy or even depressed. If we continue to eat the same heavier types of Winter foods that gave us strength and stability, this can further contribute to symptoms of dullness and imbalance.

Spring’s arrival stirs a sense of ‘waking up’ as the energy moves upwards and outwards. We start to feel more energised and drawn towards more activity, walking in nature, gardening and making room for fresh ideas. With everything flourishing around us, there is a feeling of positivity and celebration. Spring invites the qualities of being warm, mild, moist and uplifting.

health and wellbeing farmers market for fresh, local and seasonal produce to try? Each season requires our attention so that we can regulate changes accordingly. In particular, the season to be most aware of is the season that matches your own body constitution.

Pitta dosha is strongest in Summer, Kapha dosha in Winter and Spring, Vata in Autumn and Winter.

What you can do to stay in tune with spring: Favour a diet that is lighter, drier and less oily. Avoid heavy and cold food such as ice cream and cheese. Reduce sweet, salty and sour tastes as they too aggravate Kapha dosha. For more examples of the tastes, refer to my previous article about the benefits of the six tastes, Issue 5, July 2019.

Choose warm foods and drinks with a focus on pungent, bitter and astringent tastes which stimulate the taste buds and help to improve digestion.

Include lots of dark leafy greens, to support the liver and kidneys, along with radishes, asparagus and sprouts including sprouted beans - a wonderful and nutritious addition to soups, salads and wraps. Garlic and onions also help to eliminate the damp remnants of

winter by providing a springcleaning action. Ginger tea with lemon is uplifting and warming, helping to expel mucus and soothe colds.

Herbs that are useful in Spring include ginger, black pepper, turmeric and cumin.

Sort through a cupboard, recycle and re-organise, you’ll feel so much lighter.

Ease into your morning with a simple yoga routine. Take a few minutes to inhale and exhale mindfully, with your focus on your breath.

Sleeping in aggravates Kapha dosha, resulting in feeling sluggish throughout the day. Wake with the dawn instead to increase your sense of vitality.

1 teaspoon of coriander seeds

Spring Tea recipe Ingredients: 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds

1 teaspoon of fennel seeds 2 cups of water Optional: add a pinch of black pepper and dried ginger Method: Grind the seeds with a mortar and pestle.

Bring the water to a boil and pour over the seeds.

Steep for a few minutes, strain and pour into a cup.

Revitalise your skin with warmed organic sesame oil which helps to boost your immune system, whilst reducing any dryness. Gently massage the oil into your skin before your morning shower - notice how soft and supple your skin feels throughout the day.

Write a few words in your journal to clear your thoughts, making space for new ideas to flourish.

This tea is an excellent digestive aid. You can also add a little raw honey (local if possible) once the tea has cooled.

Find a relaxing place to enjoy your tea, with a view of spring’s colourful new beginning.

As I write this in Melbourne, it looks as though spring really is right around the corner. I don’t know about you, but this winter seems to have lasted for ages and the feeling of even a few days of sunshine is glorious. It makes me want to clean everything and to rectify the effects of the cold and damp on my inner and outer self.

I know that healthy food will uplift all our systems but what about using it on the outside too.

I find wintertime plays havoc with the quality of my hair and skin so I decided to research what fruit or vegetables we can use externally to help. I found some really good tips in various old books I have, so I thought I would share the Old Wives Tales with you. I can tell you some of those old wives looked pretty fantastic too!

Often the cold will reduce the lustre of hair, so to brighten it up use Avocados.

We all have one that ripens a bit too quickly, so mash it up and massage into the dry hair strands from the middle to the tip. Leave for 20 minutes, and then wash out with shampoo and conditioner. In this 20 minute period you can guarantee you will have visitors at the door!

To help split ends, rub in a little coconut oil into the tips or to strengthen hair growth apply beaten egg to dry hair, wrap in a towel for 20 minutes and wash thoroughly with cool water.

Hot water will cook the egg and that is not a good look.

Here is a beautiful Hair Boost Juice to drink: Blend in a high-speed blender or use a juice extractor.

1 bunch green kale

1 handful parsley 2 granny smith apples If you use a blender, strain the ingredients through muslin, squeezing to release all the liquid.

Add Juice of 2 limes Dash of maple syrup 750 ml filtered water What about our skin?

The Old Wives say you can rub the skin with a slice of tomato, cucumber or lemon to refresh it. Alternatively, mash strawberries to make a mask. They are packed with antioxidants and particularly benefit an oily or acne skin.

Lemons will tighten pores and clean the face, making it shine. You can use their flesh, juice, or rub a slice on your skin, washing off within five minutes. To lessen

health and wellbeing acne scars or dark spots, rub with lemon every night before bed for a week. The difference is amazing!

2 red apples

Remember lemon creates photosensitivity, so always wash it away thoroughly and stay out of the sun for a few hours.

1 x 2-inch piece ginger

Bananas are good for all skin types and make a good exfoliant. Mash, apply and wash off after 10 minutes. It will soften your skin, giving it a natural glow.

1 bunch parsley

We all know about the benefits of cold cucumber over tired eyes and puffy lids, as the antioxidants and flavonoids in cucumber reduce irritation, but did you know that if you rub your face with a slice, it cools and moisturises the skin, tightening up pores?

Cucumber is great for relieving sunburn too and is especially beneficial for sensitive and dry skin.

2 celery stalks ¼ large cucumber

1 small bunch kale ½ lemon

1 handful spinach Now for inside!

Over winter we are less active, eat less healthily and lack sunlight so we feel tired and sluggish. But When Spring arrives; we are ready to feel bright and alive. To alleviate that winter feeling, we need to attend to our Liver. Here’s a tasty kick start.

Beetroot Liver Boost Juice Juice together 225gm cooked beetroot or pre-cooked pack 1 bunch cilantro 2 Apples 2.5cm piece of fresh ginger 1 peeled lemon 2 stalks of celery 2 seedless cucumbers

Skin Boost Juice Recipe Blend or juice the following ingredients as a refreshing drink.

You can freeze the pulp and add to your smoothies! All these juices will last in your fridge, in a closed lid bottle, for up to a week.

Most old wives tales are based on years of tradition and experience. The common sense behind them has often been lost in time, but as science learns more about our body, its functions and the food it needs, they are not so easily dismissed as myth.

We were all brought up on the words “Eat your carrots and you will see in the dark.”

We wrote it off as nonsense but they are full of Vitamin A which protects the eye surface, the cornea that is essential for good vision.

There is even a clue in the carrot itself; cut through just below the ferny leaves and you will see an eye shape there.

So maybe they did know a thing or two, those Old Wives.

What About Kiah?

Meet the girl living life to the fullest with her disability.

This month, Shelley Brown and her daughter Kiah have kindly shared their story with us on navigating the challenges and achievements of living with disability and also, their journey through finding empowerment, inclusiveness and equality.

Miss Kiah was born in a flash of red-haired surprise. At first, her temperature was low so she was transferred to special care to warm up. Then the seizures began. Imagine that. Your introduction to the strange new world outside the womb, culminates in your brain randomly firing with uncontrollable body jerks and medical teams running.

The tests, questions and worry followed. Two weeks after her birth, and still no answers, Kiah was transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. An MRI showed significant damage to her tiny brain. In a closed room, with a nurse barely out of university to hold my hand, I heard, “She has Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.

It looks like she will have Cerebral Palsy.” My head spun until I managed to blurt out, “What do you mean looks like Cerebral Palsy?”

My life experience to that point left me ill equipped so the flood of thoughts came out as tears. The young nurse cried too, a sign of solidarity I appreciate to this day. Then I realised I had to tell her father, her brother and

feature her grandparents, all while desperately trying to figure out what this meant for her and for me.

After five more weeks in hospital Kiah came home.

A scary little bundle who needed medication four times during the day and night and regular small feeds through the nasogastric tube attached to her pale face. She struggled to settle to sleep and was still having seizures daily. I found myself in a whole new world of unchartered territory.

Whether I was thrust there or new wonders opened up to me as a result, is a matter of perspective. Any semblance of control over my life felt like it went out the window. I wore my grief and anxiety like a pair of old, holey pants; they don’t serve you well but are familiar and strangely comfortable.

Fast forward three years.

Acceptance had finally settled on us as a family and life really began. Kiah attended early intervention and was supported to get her first wheelchair - the first of many. The biggest challenge for us was communication. For many years Kiah could not even make eye contact, so it was a gift indeed when she could start to use a simple eye gaze system.

When she began school, the progression from looking at four choices to engaging with a multi-celled PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display) book was empowering. The progression to being able to make choices and say

what she wanted was lovely. But the most telling change came as her expressive language became more robust.

Kiah was able to show who she is and that was both joyous and powerful. She is now a multi- modal communicator using an advanced PODD book as well as facial expressions, signing and vocalising. An Eye Gaze Voice Output Device has been her high-tech talker for the last couple of years. She loves the ability to chat without someone having to help her. The first time she repeated (read nagged!)

Kiah is a vivacious, adventurous kid with a wicked sense of humour and a zest for life. She wants to be included in her community, her schools and in life. Given fair opportunities she will and does shine. While my daughter’s disability has a big influence on what I do every day and how I see the world, it is not my life it’s hers, so empowerment for her is crucial - difficult but crucial. From my point of view, my kid doesn’t need ‘special’ treatment; she simply needs whatever support is required to have the SAME opportunities as

her peers. Fun times doing what she loves, making her own choices and navigating the challenges that go along with that.

Kiah may have what many would consider severe disabilities, but she is well into her teens now and at an age where most young people would have a say in their medical care, so why not her too? Often “Why not?” for someone with a severe communication disorder would be wrapped up in the “But how?” For our girl, a robust and reliable form of communication

has enabled her to make choices. Not just of what to wear or what DVD to watch, but whether she feels comfortable and able to have medication injected directly into her muscles with no general anaesthetic or gas in order to protect her respiratory function. This is empowerment for Kiah to be able to make her own choices.

Helping others truly understand inclusion is an ongoing challenge. We have come a long way but the work continues. One fantastic initiative, that has made so many more places accessible for us to visit, is Changing Places - providing public toilets with full sized change tables and hoists in major public spaces across Australia. These facilities are multiplying the places we can happily visit, knowing we can dash to the loo when nature calls!

Inclusive and accessible education is also important.

experience of learning to make their own choices and having people around them setting high expectations?

For Kiah, this has always meant a combination of school settings. She attends two different schools. Her local High School and a specialist school for children with high physical and medical needs.

“As much as it makes me anxious as a mother, she doesn’t need protection.

She needs to get in there and have a go in whatever way she can.”

I do often feel our girl needs a sign which reads ‘watching is NOT doing’, that she can pop on her wheelchair when required.

I feel when sitting on the sidelines happens, it is not necessarily through lack of care or trying, but a lack of understanding. Or maybe a misplaced thought of protection. As much as it makes me anxious as a mother, she doesn’t need protection. She needs to

get in there and have a go in whatever way she can.

Luckily for her, she has many people in her life who ask “How can she do this?” rather than shying away.

Kiah has aspirations.

Recently, a visiting physiotherapist asked Kiah about her therapy goals.

Kiah used her book to detail physical goals and how she would like to achieve them.

It took time, but the worth could clearly be seen in the face of a teenager who was being the tiller of her own life.

The NDIS is starting to make a difference, as we had never been able to access private therapy before. The new system requires time and following up, but the possibilities are there. Kiah is fortunate to have a terrific support coordinator to guide us and a long term support worker service. Equipment is still taking a very long time to be approved. Kiah is looking forward to the supportive lounge chair she has requested. A portable hoist

has been given the green light, so she will be able to access her walker at home shortly and is excited to play soccer with her dog, Nero, who is being trained to be her companion.

Soon she will have to transition from the RCH and out of school. The prospect is terrifying for me, but I know Kiah will take the change into her stride as she always does. The Children’s’ Hospital has been like a second home. Adult services seem daunting but will soon be her new normal.

As for post school, Kiah has thought of further study at TAFE in writing or working as a consultant in the area of access. Recently Kiah described herself for her NDIS review. She said, “Clever me is because I cerebral palsy. (i) cuddle give good.

I strong, lucky, brave, adventurous.”

The new skills and amazing people we have met along the way have certainly made it all worthwhile. And this kid! The lessons, the joy, the appreciation of life and all it has to offer. Kiah has taught many lessons to lots of people over her years but mostly to me. I have made use of these new skills as a part of many research projects and sitting as a consumer advocate on a couple of advisory committees.

It really has been a rollercoaster ride. Kiah’s medical complexity has meant many a scary moment. Ambulance trips with seizures lasting over an hour, surgeries, plastered legs and PEG tubes that have come out in a fountain of stomach contents - Kiah receives all of her nutrition and medication via a permanently placed PEG tube. And sad moments when Kiah just couldn’t say what was wrong through

tears and pain. But the moments of sheer happiness always win.

The first time Kiah said “Unnah” and I realised she said Mum was sublime. And that first hug - just wow! Kiah has trouble bringing her hands to the middle, so a simple hug and hand reached out in love was a hard won beautiful moment. The love Kiah has of people, especially her brother and step dad, is a delight.

“It really has been a rollercoaster ride... but the moments of sheer happiness always win.”

I touch wood, cross fingers and toes and invoke all possible other parental superstitious rituals when I say Kiah has settled into wellness. It’s a tough gig but you can have cerebral palsy and epilepsy and live life.

And that’s something our girl does well. Despite me still donning those comfy old grief pants at times, this is our normal. The joy that is Kiah always comes out on top.

Not Just Imyjen’s Mother, a Look at the NDIS

My son has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a hereditary condition that causes a slow degeneration of the peripheral nerves of the extremities. At 26, his condition does not stop him leading a normal life despite having had both feet reconstructed in his teens.

I

have often thought about how his future looks as the nerves degenerate to the point of his mobility being compromised. Will he be able to work; will he need support for physical tasks?

So far this condition has not had a huge impact on his life or that of our family.

But this is not true for many people in Australia.

Back in 2013, I was part of a forum at Yarra Plenty Regional Library. The discussion was the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). At that time the scheme was about to be legislated and there was a lot of discussion about what it actually was and how beneficial it would be. Of course, I had my son in mind during this forum.

What is the NDIS? The Australian Government funds costs associated with disability, which are administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). According to the NDIS website, www.ndis.gov. au, there are around 4.3 million Australians living with disability. When the scheme is rolled out progressively over each state by 2020, it is estimated that 460,000 Australians under 65, who have a permanent and significant disability, will be provided with funding for support services.

The NDIS will provide people with disability with information and connections to services in their communities such

as doctors, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools. It’s not a welfare scheme but designed to support them to improve skills and improve independence.

Who is eligible?

People with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disabilities are supported. Early intervention support can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay.

How might this look?

We’ve heard stories of young people with a disability having to live in aged care. Can you imagine the difference if they live in an environment where they are independent and with people their own age? The NDIS can provide things like accessing the community, assistance with domestic tasks and transport. These are everyday tasks that we take for granted every day. “…it is estimated that 460,000 Australians under 65, who have a permanent and significant disability, will be provided with funding for support services.”

interview In terms of children, the NDIS can start work early in development if there are delays. In the long term, this will make a huge impact on child. It could be speech therapy if there are delays or physiotherapy for physical development that isn’t on track.

During that discussion in 2013, the idea of the NDIS was revolutionary, and still is but, as with any new idea, there are always going to be teething problems.

Fast forward a couple of years and I was now running a publishing company and one of my authors wrote a memoir about living with a child with a severe disability.

daughter, Imyjen (now 18), is diagnosed with the condition. As the mother of a normal, healthy toddler and a newborn with special needs, life for her becomes a blur of hospitals, surgeries, worry and fear. With the help of a strong, loving family, doctors, therapist and social workers, she slowly starts to make sense of the nightmare.

In dealing with the condition, she channels her frustrations and fears into a quest to speak for others who are faced with the journey into disability. As she moves forward into a new life as a mother, advocate and care-taker, she decides that neither she, nor Imyjen, will be defined by the disability.

In a bold move, she runs for a local political office!

When it comes to the ‘disability community’, Christine is well versed on navigating the many pitfalls of the landscape. She is now helping people to do this for themselves and is a staunch voice for people with disability. We chatted on the phone about the NDIS.

What do you think about the NDIS?

I think it’s fantastic. As far back as 2006, when I was in the early days of navigating having a child with a

disability, there was talk about a scheme. It’s been a long time in the making. It definitely makes an impact on Imyjen’s life.

How has it impacted you?

Before the NDIS came in, I had five hours per month of support. Now Imyjen gets the support she needs to live as close to normal life as she possibly can. While some carers were upset about the changes to the focus of support and the change from ‘respite’ to ‘support for person with disabilities’, I was happy for the support for Imyjen – it was never about me anyway. To me, it was simply a change of name from ‘respite’ to support. Under the previous programs, I was not allowed to use respite time to work.

All I wanted to do was to

work like a ‘normal’ mum might. So NDIS allows me to work, making a contribution to the community while Imyjen goes to her program. This makes me feel normal and positively impacts our wellbeing. It’s hard emotionally being a full-time carer of a highneeds person.

As with any new scheme we tend to hear more about the negatives than the positives.

What do you feel are the reasons why people are not satisfied with the service that the NDIS provides?

Many people don’t actually understand what the funding is for. It’s NOT for providing medical care to people. It’s about providing services that help people live a more ‘normal’ life. It’s about working out how a disability impacts their life and what support they need to live as close to normal life as possible, to be as independent as possible. “…Imyjen needs 24-hour care, which means I couldn’t have a job and contribute to society…”

interview the value that I have. The NDIS allows Imyjen to get the support she needs so that I can live as close to normal as possible.

What is a better way to approach the NDIS? Remember that no two cases are alike. There’s no cookie-cutter approach to disability. Just like any government scheme, there’s a protocol that needs to be followed and this takes time.

You need to work through the process, follow the steps, and work through the options until you come to a working solution.

The scheme is still being rolled out and people wonder why it isn’t working perfectly yet. The rollout has possibly been too fast, so there are aspects of it that need to be ironed out, but it will get there.

Have you got some ideas about how to make the process smoother?

We need to work together.

It should be about collaboration to make this thing a success instead of fighting against the ‘system’.

By working together, providing feedback and following the steps, we can get to an ideal solution that works for each case.

The Starlight Foundation’s mission is to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. They run many programs - one of these being wish granting. Wish recipient, Darcy Brown, wished to spend the day on the set of Thor Ragnarok while it was being filmed in Brisbane in 2016.

Darcy has cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy and narcolepsy with cataplexy.

These conditions mean that Darcy spends a lot of time in hospital and with doctors. He also had major surgery on his legs in 2015 which caused further complications that saw Darcy spend months in hospital and has left him with severe anxiety (PTSD) around hospitals. More surgery is required. The opportunity of the Starlight wish was perfectly timed as it gave Darcy something ‘special’ to look forward to. A huge Marvel fan, Darcy anticipated spending the day being immersed in all that the making of a Superhero movie

could offer. Darcy said, “I was very excited to go behind the scenes and see how they make a Marvel movie and I was hoping to meet Chris Hemsworth and the other the cast members.” He could not have predicted how truly unforgettable his ‘special’ day would become!

Darcy got to spend the whole day with Chris Hemsworth and Chris gave him his e-mail to keep in touch. At one point they were discussing a scene in the movie, in which Thor is forced to fight against The Hulk. Darcy suggested they use the line, “We know each other! He’s a friend from work!” Quite a bit of the script was being improvised and Chris thought the line was funny so Director, Taika Waititi, decided to shoot a take with Thor using the line. The line was used in the movie and featured in the teaser trailer.

Waititi went as far as to say it was the “greatest line in the movie!” Darcy said, “Even though, Chris and I kept in touch after the day on the set, I felt shocked and surprised that they used the line in the movie, I didn’t know

they were going to. It was so awesome!”

Darcy was also invited as a VIP of Chris Hemsworth’s to attend the Premiere of the film in Sydney. He and Chris still message each other every few weeks and Darcy has been invited to go on the set of the new Thor in Sydney next year. Darcy’s Mum, Kylie, says Chris is “a very special guy.”

In November the Starlight Foundation will run the Sugar Free Me challenge. Last year, Sugar Free Me raised over $250,000 bringing a dose of happiness to over 6,400 sick kids. Darcy raised over $500 last year in the challenge.

Tim’s Plan

My name is Jen and I’m the mother of 18yo Tim, who just happens to have Trisomy 21 – Down Syndrome. He loves playing GTA (Grand Theft Auto), riding his modified bicycle and catching up with his old school mates. He also plays league ten pin bowling and goes to the gym with a support worker weekly, which has been made possible by NDIS funding.

The Transition to NDIS was smooth to start with; Tim attended a Special Developmental School (SDS) which automatically placed him into the scheme. Our first plan review was a great experience with a LAC (Local Area Coordinator) who understood disabilities and understood Tim’s limitations as well as his potentials, as he ventures into society as an

adult. At his next plan review, the LAC omitted a lot of the requests that could assist Tim to achieve his goals and his funding was cut to a bare minimum of 7 hours of support work so there was no possibility for any of his previously set medium to long term goals to be implemented - I was devastated!

As a parent of a non-verbal young adult, I go through extreme anxiety every time I have to deal with NDIS. Their changing policies, reports required, quotes or justification for needing assistive technology upgrades and consumables have become a maze well beyond

the average mum, dad, carer and participants - the people who the scheme is supposed to help make their lives easier.

It’s become more business structured, requiring experts to advocate and help guide families and participants to achieve funding for complex needs.

Tim’s plan like others goes through a secretive process from one department to another, from LACs to the next decision maker.

Even reviewable claims are reviewed by a one department, while a request for assistive technology is dealt with by another. My son has become a number in a system that looks at recommendations by LAC’s and reports from experts.

I’d like to see the system streamlined and for the maze of decision makers to get to know my son, who has more potential than the restrictive mantra of ‘reasonable and necessary.’ I’m tired of the NDIS merry-go-round!

YOPD, the NDIS, and Me

The first symptoms of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD) appeared when I was 42. I was a university lecturer and academic, as well as the independent, strong, active, healthy and single mother of two young children.

During an assessment by a physiotherapist I was advised to see a doctor as I had a progressive neurological disease. The doctors were puzzled. I suffered from fevers, ulcers, skin rashes and blinding headaches.

My hearing and eyesight deteriorated and walking and standing became difficult. Finally, after seven years, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease known as Silk Road disease but that didn’t explain my neurological symptoms.

Ten years later, I was too disabled to work. I lost my hard-won career as an expert in sustainability and environmental economics. I returned home to Melbourne dispirited. An excellent neurophysiotherapist kept me on my feet but eventually a specialist neurologist gave me the devastating news that I had advanced Parkinson’s

Disease. Medication helped, but the disease progressed.

I published my book, Sordid Boon, a history of sustainability and economics, whilst supervising two postgraduate students. I also studied Botanical Art as I had always found drawing and painting very therapeutic. With the help of Bev, my amazing teacher, I developed my own technique using water-colour pencils as fine brush-work was impossible. “ I had advanced Parkinson’s Disease. Medication helped, but the disease progressed.”

I had deep brain stimulation surgery in 2013, which significantly improved my PD symptoms but my abilities were restricted and a severe shoulder injury from a fall required intensive physiotherapy. It was then

suggested that I apply for help through the NDIS, with the PD progression and ongoing shoulder problems. I needed daily assistance with living plus a lot of physio. A specialised ‘work-station’ was fitted at home as I could no longer draw or write at an ordinary table.

Art had become increasingly important and, in 2017, I graduated with a postgraduate certificate in Art Therapy. Although I was still doing some academic work, I was passionate about contributing to the community and voluntary community work became one of my NDIS goals.

Initially, I struggled with the NDIS terminology and was bewildered by funding allocation. When my plan was due for review, my neurologist, OT and neurophysiotherapist were strong advocates. I also had proactive NDIS/BSL linkage co-ordinators who understood the vagaries of Parkinson’s, with its constantly changing levels of disability from one hour to the next.

One of my co-ordinators, recognising the importance to me of art as a therapy, organised a solo art exhibition with Arts Access Victoria at the Skin Gallery in Carlton.

With Parkinson’s Victoria, she also helped me establish a Darebin Painting for Parkinson’s* group in my local Span Community House, which helps me contribute to my community. There are many pathways to help people in the NDIS and beyond. It’s about finding the right people who understand your own personal disability. *Proudly supported by the Darebin City Council’s Community Grants Program.

My MS Story of Hope

Life is a journey filled with wonders and surprises. It isn’t without its setbacks and sorrows either. When I was 7, I lived a very unremarkable life as one of two siblings to hard working Greek migrant parents.

“This is my story - not about disability but about what ability I have to create positive change.”

I was a very fit child who loved walking and running but while playing cricket in my cousin’s street I noticed a strange numbness to my left arm and hand. Within days the numbness had spread to the left part of my body and head. I developed double vision and extreme fatigue and slurring my words.

My GP referred me to a neurologist and I was admitted to St. Vincent’s hospital for tests, including CAT scans and a Spinal Tap. I was given a probable diagnosis of MS. My parents were told but I was not, probably due to being 16 and possibly because my parents didn’t understand what MS was. I struggled to finish high school with my

cognitive decline already in progress and suffering extreme fatigue. I attained my VCE/HSC and was accepted into RMIT University to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.

My symptoms increased shortly after this and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan was performed; MS was unequivocally confirmed.

I struggled through my tertiary education, attaining my degree with a double major in Microbiology and Immunohaematology.

I fell in love with a woman who didn’t consider my disabilities a barrier. We married four years later and have two wonderful children.

Understanding that MS is a degenerative disease, we set ourselves financial goals.

Through sacrifice and hard work, we managed to save a deposit for a home. We have also managed to buy investment properties to help our children.

My life as a scientist is over due to MS but I have not

given up working. My priorities have shifted towards important and sustainable areas such as providing a safe platform for my family and then providing support for people with disabilities.

I’m also commencing a support group for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis in the Niddrie/Essendon area.

To provide unique support through a lived experience is something that drives me.

We live one life and we need to cherish the miracle.

It offers immeasurable scope for development, self-understanding, communication and love.

The most important is love.

This is my story - not about disability but about what ability I have to create positive change in mine and other’s lives.

Ultimately, if I waste my life playing the victim regarding unfortunate circumstances instead of living life, then I have lived a wasted opportunity.

I enjoy speaking with entrepreneurs and watching them have a lightbulb moment as things start falling into place when the topic of quantum physics is raised. You see, you are energy. You are full of atoms, protons, neutrons and electrons. You are physics.

An atom is made up of 99.99999% space. The only matter inside the atom is so small; it’s about 0.0000001% of the atom. A helpful way to imagine this is to think of a small church with a 10 cent coin on the floor. The church and all the space inside would be the atom and the coin, the matter.

because the atoms spin so quickly. So why is this important? Well, when it comes to manifesting in your business, an understanding of energy is required because manifestation, whether you are consciously choosing to or not, works on vibration and frequency.

We are bioelectromagnetic beings and this means that, among other things, we have electricity and wavelengths within us. Our thoughts are electric. We can measure

them with an EEG (electroencephalogram).

Our feelings are magnetic.

Our thoughts lead to feelings, lead to vibration, lead to frequency. Isn’t this amazing? You don’t have to see the atoms or the electricity to know they are there and working in much the same way that you don’t see Wi-Fi yet you know it’s working.

So when you can appreciate these things, you can better understand what people mean when they say that we need to be a vibrational match to the thing we want like money, referrals or clients.

Without understanding the Law of Attraction (as discussed prior), we may inadvertently create situations where the Law of Attraction is working against us. This has happened to a number of my business clients.

They have an interest in manifestation and they do their best to create the outcome they want; they work on their beliefs, they engage in gratitude work, they might journal and set intentions. But what happens is that they end up putting themselves in a position where they are allowing the external world to influence their internal state. They haven’t fully learned that manifestation is about vibration.

For example, Mark, an entrepreneur I worked with, would practice manifestation when a large invoice needed to be paid. He’d say all of the right things out loud, like how grateful he was for everything in his business but he’d feel scared about the money.

So here’s the thing: the Universe doesn’t understand language.

It understands vibration and frequency. So, Mark could do all of the things

The next step was to teach Mark how to better govern his internal being, including the way he felt and the things he thought, so they would be less susceptible to what was happening in the world outside of him. For example, Mark would feel good until he opened the mail and saw the invoice.

The invoice (the external) then influenced how Mark felt (the internal).

One way to create greater control over of your internal state is to practice. This is how Mark mastered it.

He began by writing a list of people, pets, things in nature, anything that elicited a feeling of peace, calm, happiness or joy.

He’d keep that list near to him and then, each time he opened mail, he’d choose one thing from the list and focus on generating the feeling. He would then practice holding that feeling. This was difficult at first but, with practice, he became more proficient.

The second aspect of training with Mark involved helping him to realise that he was really only consciously manifesting when he was aware of lack. He’d manifest in the bad times and forget about it in the good. By teaching Mark how to be more conscious with his practice, he was soon able to elicit exciting opportunities for his business that resulted in additional turnover.

You can learn how to manifest more effectively just like Mark, using these exact strategies. It will take time to master your internal being, so another tip is to practice maintaining it while exposing yourself to minor triggers. You might create a list of 10 triggers for your anxiety, scarcity, fear or other mindset and then rank them in order of least distressing to most.

Start working with the least distressing trigger first, master it and then proceed to the next.

An Objective Look at Subjective – Public Transport Public transport in dreams can be very interesting indeed. Most public transport can be broken down into a few groups or categories. Trains and trams for example, fall into the set route track category. This means that they stay on tracks and they can’t move or function off them.

Planes, buses, ships, ferries and other water borne craft fit into a different category as they have set routes and destinations, but they do have the ability to change according to the circumstances.

One point to note with all of these forms of public transport is that they run to set times, they have regular stops (planes less so) and they go in a circular motion – meaning they go from a start to a finish point and back again constantly.

Taxis, Ubers and even horse drawn carts all fall into the non-set route category and therefore have the ability to be very flexible in the ways they move around.

The one thing they all have in common though, is having a person in control of the mode of transport being used. This means in dreams that unless you’re the driver, someone else is controlling your direction in life!

Other forms of public transport such as hire bicycles and scooters allow the user to be in total control of their direction with amazing flexibility.

Imagine in a dream that you see yourself walking onto a train platform heading to work. It’s grey and raining and a red train pulls in.

You run to get into the last carriage and sit down in a blue seat as the train moves out. As you travel along daydreaming, you realise that you’ve missed your stop and panic sets in about how to get back and being late for work. “…unless you’re the driver, that someone else is controlling your direction in life!”

This could mean that you are experiencing an emotional time (rain and grey skies) in your life around a work scenario, as indicated by travelling to work. You may work from home, which can

Sitting in the blue chair suggests good communication is needed, however you have to be comfortable (the chair) in order to communicate well. Daydreaming is a way of escaping dealing with emotional issues. By not dealing with it properly, the situation will escalate, as evidenced by missing the stop and panicking about how to get back to where you were going in the first place!

Obviously there is more detail in this, but I’m sure you get the idea that it sometimes takes time to work out the messages and to achieve the best understanding of how to deal with the issues at hand.

Basic Public Transport Interpretations I have selected a few public transport interpretations from the book, Practical Mediumship – A Guide to Understanding Psychics, Mediums, Dreams and Physical and Metaphysical Information by Anthony Kilner.

Public Transport Interpretations Bus – More flexibility in direction. However, it is driven by others and has minimal flexibility along the route.

Bicycle – Bikes can be hired as a form of public transport.

In this case, bikes are twowheeled, referencing a bi-cycle in life. It relates to a more leisurely trip in a direction that can be workrelated or personal.

Ferry – As with Ship, ferries allow the ability to traverse emotional conditions. Ferries are generally associated with work, but there are ferries used for pleasure as well.

Plane – Like all public transport, a plane generally flies a set route and is controlled by a pilot and co-pilot. They are helping a person to reach greater heights in their journey that can also encompass vast distances, meaning longer

periods of help in that direction.

Taxi (Uber) – The Uber references challenge and change in direction that is not conventional in the way it works. Pre-paid payments are made based on the journey required and the vehicles can vary, meaning there are alternatives available on that journey.

Train – A fast way to get from one place to another on tracks meaning there is no real ability to change direction. It loops, like all public transport. It is also controlled by a person that you wouldn’t necessarily know.

Next time you are taking a trip utilising public transport think of the ways it can apply subjectively to dreams!

The Spirit Of Things Bereavement and Grief

by Sam Duly This month I will be talking about bereavement and grief. We will all suffer some form of bereavement in our lifetime, other than the loss of someone through death. We may suffer from grief due to a relationship ending, whether it is family or a friend, the loss of a job, a house, a pet, a way of life; these are just some examples.

“Grief is very personal, as each person deals with it differently.”

We suffer grief over all of the above. Life is so busy these days and we get into set routines, organised and methodical just to survive, so even a change in these circumstances can cause grief, a form of bereavement for us.

I truly believe that grief from a failed relationship is very difficult to manage, as you know the person/s are still alive, doing their thing, going to places that you also went together, joint friends and big memories too. This includes many things to comprehend and that have changed in your life.

When your loved one passes to spirit, you know in your heart you will see them

again one day, but you also know that you will not be bumping into them in the street. This type of grief and bereavement can benefit from some counselling if you are struggling.

Grief is very personal, as each person deals with it differently. There is no time frame for grief, although they do say that the first year is the hardest after a loss, as it’s the first of everything; birthdays, anniversaries and special holiday times of the year to get through.

I feel the second year is one of the hardest, as people (unless close family) don’t seem to remember the special days and dates and life seems to carry on. It truly does not matter how long it has been since your loved one has passed, you will always remember them and they will always be around you. They will make their presence known near the dates special to you.

“Remembering to be kind to yourself, , giving yourself time to adapt and remembering not to isolate yourself... is important.”

We do not truly get over losing a loved one, we just learn how best to live with

the loss. Our loved ones will remain in our hearts forever and it is the shared memories that keep us going. These memories also keep our loved ones in spirit going.

Grief is normal and natural and we must first recognise it, before we can deal with it.

Grief can affect us physically, mentally and emotionally. The physical loss of their presence and missing them, can hurt your heart.

Feelings of pain, shock, numbness, guilt and fear are normal things to go through.

We do have a duty of care as Mediums, especially if someone has mentioned that they do not wish to live anymore through the sheer grief of losing someone close to them.

Some good advice is to speak to your loved one just like they are still here, whether it is in your mind or out loud. It truly helps and they will give you signs that they are around you (as discussed in the June edition) and to let you know you are loved.

What does a human being have in common with a tree? A tree, which is long lasting, grows tall and straight with a wide trunk and balanced canopy. This is the visible part; what’s not visible is the root system - the foundation. A human has a root connection to the Earth too, via the Base Chakra, which is not seen. However, it’s an integral part of our existence.

A tree won’t grow tall or support a big canopy without a robust, deep root system. In fact the root system will be larger than the trunk and branches. When the root system of a tree is

vast, deep and wide, the tree can weather any storm.

It may lose a branch or two, yet the tree will stay rooted securely, upright to the spot.

Expanding on last month, at the polar opposite of the spectrum to the Crown Chakra, is the Root Chakra positioned at the base of spine (chakras see issue #3).

While the Crown Chakra is the fastest moving/highest frequency Chakra, whose simple purpose is connection to source, inspiration and being in the flow, the Root Chakra has the slowest moving frequency, whose simple purpose is connection to earth and enabling us to be securely grounded.

To understand the dynamics, think about the process of creating something physical, like a chair. First, the idea of the chair has to be inspired - that happens in the Crown Chakra on top of the head then, all the other Chakras in between the Crown and the Root Chakra, have to

line up and be clear, for the idea of the chair to become physical.

Both the idea of the chair and the outcome of the idea, being the physical manifestation of the chair are real things.

The idea is vibrating at a high frequency, so you can’t see it. That’s why, in cartoons, we identify with an idea as a light bulb appearing above the head!

Literally, the light enters the Crown Chakra, which is why, in esoteric philosophy; the light is the representation of consciousness.

The light/idea has to make a journey, all the way through the etheric system - all of the chakras. When it does this, it becomes solid, it is made manifest. It has reached its final destination, that is until it wears out and then the matter that it was created from, becomes something else and the creation process repeats. Hopefully it will be up/recycled or

energy buried and rot or maybe it will be burnt and return to ether and dust. Nothing is permanent. It is all energy in the process of self-realisation, as are we.

One of the joys of having an incarnation is one’s capacity to create and participate in the creation process! The creation, preservation and destruction cycle is continuous and we constantly contribute to it.

If you want to create, attract and have really awesome, big or expensive things and do big deeds in the world, then you need a big strong root Chakra and Root system to ground and support your dreams and desires into physical manifestation.

When a person has Chakras that are out of balance then they experience all sorts of trickiness.

To give you a general idea; a person who has a really big Crown Chakra and a small Root Chakra is often

described as - ungrounded, airy fairy, away with the fairies, whimsical or even irresponsible.

Conversely, a person with an opposite configuration may be described as attached to the physical and material world, with no regard for spirit. They display physical world obsession, are unable to perceive of or see fairies, they objectify and are unfocused and emotionally unaware.

Benefits of a healthy Root Chakra

• Fear of financial insecurity/loss • Fear/sense of not belonging or fitting • Fear of rejection by family, tribe, community, others • Fear of abandonment • Fear of commitment • Fear of spiders, snakes, sharks, being eaten, bugs and heights • Fear of physical illness/ disease/harm/injury to self/ children • Fear of living, suicidal feelings/ tendencies

Despite the Indian Guru Osho’s admonition that ‘you are leaving your house, your innermost core, in search of a woman outside,’ and, ‘the woman is within,’ Librans compulsively engage in an endless round of social activities in the quest to find true love. For such eternally hopeful Librans, the opening of an envelope would get them out the door, rather than, horror of horrors, staying home alone!

G’day folks, welcome back to my page. As promised I will tell you the story of the innocent child spirit called Mary-Anne.

While investigating Barwon Park mansion with my team, we came across several spirit entities.

One of those was a child called Mary-Anne.

Anthony had made contact with this young spirit and described her as being around 8-10 years old and wearing leg irons, possibly due to the Polio virus. She seemed to take quite a liking to Anthony,

Mary-Anne really disliked me, because she thought I was a big angry man. Apparently she had been watching us when I was impacted by the indigenous spirit trapped in the cellar, causing me to show rage and anger.

After calming down and regaining my composure,

we continued to investigate the upstairs section of the house.

Anthony and I went into one of the bedrooms, when Anthony commented that Mary-Anne was here with us, she was sitting on the window ledge of the window. She told Anthony that she was still uneasy with me. I apologised to her for my behaviour and told her that’s not what I am usually like. This must have worked, as she got down off the window ledge, walked/floated past me and Anthony, as well as a couple of other team members.

Over the Rainbow Transgender people in Victoria celebrated a huge success on Tuesday 27th August 2019, when a bill passed in the Upper House to enable the gender marker to be changed to the one that the person identified as.

by Celeste de Vis The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment Bill, introduced by the State Government, passed by a vote of 26 to14 and will now go to the Governor for Royal Assent.

Victoria now falls in line with Tasmania, South Australia, ACT and Northern Territory.

People will also be free to self-nominate their sex as male, female or many other non-binary descriptors of their choice.

In the years preceding my daughter’s transition, the process of changing her name legally, changing her Medicare card, her passport and any other forms of identification were all met with little difficulty, except for the birth certificate and that darn gender marker.

As the Victorian law stood, a person could be officially recognised as their selfidentified sex only if they had undertaken gender reassignment surgery (GRS).

This law was extremely restrictive to the transgender population. Only those who ‘ticked’ the box could achieve the desired gender

marker. I personally felt that this restriction was a human rights issue. Trans rights are human rights!

Last December, I had the firsthand experience of the repercussions of such an unfair law - secondary school enrolment.

As a mother, who had fought so hard in the previous years in rallies to save Safe Schools and in protests to fight for Marriage Equality, I felt powerless at the thought of walking into an educational space, engaging with strangers working in administration and having to ‘out’ my daughter as transgender, before she even set foot in the school as a Year 7 student.

My daughter’s enrolment papers requested that a birth certificate be presented at the office and attached to her student file.

I was overwrought about the request. Fears such as:

• What if the person working in administration was transphobic?

• Would staff ‘out’ her and share information around the staffroom?

• How could my daughter be given a chance to build a rapport with staff and peers, without the knowledge of her identification being inconsistent with the gender that she identified as?

On the day of enrolment, I decided to bring along Charlotte’s passport. As her passport’s gender marker stated that she was a girl.

Prior to, and during my tentative walk through the door, I prayed.

Choice - I have met many transgender peeps who choose to keep their biological body parts. They feel safe, confident and happy in their own skin.

A friend of mine started taking oestrogen several years ago. She has grown breasts, is looking feminine, in fact, absolutely stunning, yet has no inclination whatsoever to change the appearance of ‘down stairs’.

I am meeting more and more transgender folk who are happy to share their thoughts and feelings about the matter.

Some reasons include: Cost - GRS is an expensive procedure, costing between $10,000 and $100,000 and as such is often inaccessible for many transgender people. I have seen, within my community, a post requesting a donation to a Go Fund Me account on all too many occasions.

Illness - GRS comes with its own risk, as does any surgery.

Some transgender folk are simply not able to undertake surgery due to an underlying medical condition.

So, how does this law reform impact my family? There are numerous points to mention, however the following have been ongoing triggers over recent years.

Employment - I can now be confident that Charlotte won’t be ‘outed’ as a transgender person when she applies for an afterschool job. Her potential employer will see her as she should be seen; a young person working for extra money.

Extracurricular activities Charlotte will be able to apply to participate in sport, hobbies, and camps without her identification and documentation automatically ‘outing’ her as being a transgender person.

As a cautious parent, I believe a conversation should always take place between a camp organiser and the family in question prior to commencement of any camp.

I have been fortunate to use Christian Youth Ministries Camps (CYC) and Salvation Army Camps without any negative feedback or impact to Charlotte’s enrolment or participation.

Her work colleagues will judge her for her teamwork, her skill set, her dedication to her work, as opposed to the risk of being judged through a lens of bigotry, prejudice, and fear.

Education - Charlotte can apply to University as a female who would like to further her education. Her birth certificate will reflect

Do you know your Defence Mechanisms?

To understand how the mind works, we need to divide it into the conscious mind and the subconscious mind.

We use our conscious mind when we produce thought, analyse or use it to plan our daily lives. This is the important part of us that is aware of ourselves, our world and is also where we access our short-term memory.

We are, however, less aware of our subconscious mind.

This part of the mind stores all kinds of information, operating often in the background, recording every event, emotion and feeling since the day we are born, containing all the information from our experiences that we are not consciously aware of.

It is where we access our emotions and feelings from our memories as well as our thought patterns and even addictions.

Hypnosis accesses the subconscious mind and this is why people often remember events with clarity or why memories suddenly resurface after many years. It is a storage and retrieval system and it is where our defence mechanisms originate. Don’t worry though; everyone uses defence mechanisms in some form or another.

So, what are defence mechanisms?

Defence mechanisms are designed to protect us when we are feeling under threat (real or imagined).

They are used as a way to protect us (our ego selves) from uncomfortable feelings associated with being perceived by others in a detrimental way. Therefore, defence mechanisms are a way of distancing ourselves from the reality and full awareness of distressing, uncomfortable thoughts, feelings and actions.

A vast majority of defence mechanisms are subconscious, which means we do not have awareness of them operating in the background. Even though they are designed to protect us from painful or uncomfortable aspects of our lives, the flip side is that some defence mechanisms, if used routinely, can cause major disruption in our life and relationships, both with ourselves and others.

mental health Repression: Distressing emotions, feelings or memories that are suppressed from surfacing to their greatest extent, perhaps even rejected as existing. situations in our lives is a healthy strategy to develop a deeper understanding.

What are some common defence mechanisms?

Rationalisation: When we attempt to justify controversial feelings or behaviour in a logical way, to make it seem more acceptable to ourselves and others.

Projection: This is where our feelings, thoughts and behaviours are displaced and projected onto another person. People often accuse others of doing things they are doing, without full awareness they are projecting.

Sublimation: Redirecting unacceptable impulses into more socially acceptable channels, such as using sport as a release for aggression/ anger.

Displacement: A person transfers feelings toward a person or situation to another. For example, when a person feels unhappy with one individual but takes their frustrations out on others.

Regression: Slipping back to an earlier stage of life development. For example, a child slipping back into baby stages of development.

Reaction Formation: Where there are two conflicting aspects of ourselves, a person will over compensate for fear of the opposite showing itself. For example; an overly polite and agreeable person may actually have repressed hostility of which they are unaware.

Denial: Where uncomfortable feelings, emotions or events are treated as if they are not real or do not exist.

Overcoming the use of defence mechanisms in our lives means to become aware of how we use them in our daily lives and to which patterns we conform.

Chances are these have been a part of our lives for a significant amount of time and it may take a while to change our natural instinct.

Defence mechanisms can indicate where we are sitting in terms of our psychological

The Danger of Bottled Emotions Man flu - we’ve all heard the term. When a man gets a cold everybody has to know about it. Similarly, when a man has a physical ache or pain, he’ll tell everyone apart from his doctor (as discussed in my column in the March issue).

If a man is struggling with mental or emotional issues though, he’ll very rarely tell anyone. Men internalise emotions and try to cope on their own because they don’t want to appear weak. Thankfully, society is changing and men are encouraged to speak up and seek help more often.

sure fire way to not be OK. I am all too familiar with this and I now use my story to help others.

As a teenager I was extremely introverted, I was bullied as a kid and left school at the age of fifteen. I had been out in the workforce for six months and there were still so many things in my life not working for me. What did I do? I kept it all to myself, building up an emotional well inside of me with stress, anger, hurt and an ever growing sense

Then one night, just a week away from my sixteenth birthday, the well broke.

As my parents were both working shift work at the time and I was alone in the house, I had time to carefully and meticulously execute a plan.

I found a screwdriver that I could use to remove the lock on my parents medicine cabinet, I then proceeded to take whatever pills I found, carefully reinstalled the lock and went to bed. I only have the accounts of what followed - being found, the ambulance ride,

mental health stomach pumping, being officially dead for an amount of time and so forth. I awoke three days later in hospital.

I was extremely lucky; I also had a loving family that supported me through the recovery process afterwards.

If only I had turned to them before the well broke!

that I’ve now survived on this earth for half a century, I look back and am thankful for the lesson; thankful for still being here so as others can learn from my story.

As a parent myself, I encourage my children and my partner to be open with their emotions, that it’s OK to express sadness, frustration, love and to talk about what’s going on in their lives.

With a bit of luck this will help them not to drown in the well of their own emotions.

Unfortunately others have not been so lucky and when that well swells and breaks it can happen in so many different ways - some take themselves out and some take others out with them.

In any event, there are no winners and the stones that explode from the walls of the well collect collateral damage in varying degrees.

There is always help available, talk to your loved ones. There is a beautiful song by American country singer Garth Brooks called ‘If tomorrow never comes’.

If you get the chance listen to the original, listen to the emotion in Brooks’ voice especially towards the end.

It is a story of What If? What If tomorrow did not come for you and those that you love never knew your feelings, never knew the real you?

This is just one example of how harmful bottling up one’s emotions can be and how harmful it is telling us as children not to cry or not to complain. As I sit here writing this, contemplating the fact

It is for this reason that communication is key.

It also helps to have a physical outlet - running, dancing, exercise and such. I know that when I release energy through exercise, although my body sometimes protests, my mind is often clearer after a really good workout.

Express yourself freely, live your life and experience it in all its aspects. Yes, there will be sorrow, yes there will be moments of despair and times when you are angry, but there will also be joy, wonder, amazement and powerful love!

The trick is not to let any one of these emotions build up inside and break the well.

By living in the moment, and acknowledging your emotions at the time you create balance, and the well will not overflow or break.
