Can we make peace with anger?
by Derran Heney

We know what it’s like to feel angry, right? We feel enraged, our pulse races, our muscles tighten and we feel shaky and nauseous seemingly all at once.
Anger is a powerful emotion and one that is poorly understood. Anger itself isn’t really a huge problem – however it’s what we do with our anger that makes the difference between functioning in a healthy or unhealthy manner.
Anger is unique in that it is a powerful motivating force that allows us to set boundaries with others or express ourselves fully. It is a primal emotion attached to our fight or flight response, meaning it is also fundamental to our survival.
However, if we hold onto anger for long periods, we hurt in ways we often cannot see immediately, our physical and emotional health can suffer and that’s not healthy for us. Likewise, if we project anger towards others, we can often say and do things we really didn’t want to and then have compounding issues to deal with which are also damaging. What most people do not know is that anger is a secondary emotion, meaning that anger wells up from the experience of primary emotions like sadness, guilt, hurt, disgust and resentment.
Anger is the most volatile of all the emotions and is easily misdirected. Most often this is because we are not aware of other emotions existing under the surface of anger. Ever had that sinking feeling that we have disproportionately over-reacted to a situation and are puzzled as to why? That’s because there can be many emotional triggers within our subconscious minds operating without our conscious awareness.
Since we were infants, we have stored everything within our subconscious memory including our joys and hurts. When we feel a familiar emotion, even though the context of the situation may be very different, it can literally trigger a lifetime of feelings all at once.
Freud developed the iceberg theory to explain this. The exposed part of the iceberg represents our conscious mind; what is in our awareness. The submerged, under water, part of the iceberg represents the subconscious mind; what is not part of our awareness. Becoming aware of our emotions can facilitate our awareness towards any underlying subconscious issues for healing. That’s why it is important to do self-work.
The key to dissipating anger is actually to tune into it; to treat every situation as an opportunity to learn. Do not be afraid to spend time with anger, feel through it, accept and acknowledge how you truly feel. If you feel angry, bring your awareness to what you feel - I feel angry about… (and identify the situation and why you feel angry).

Weekend Warriors
by Jason D. Varga

There seems to be a growing trend here in Australia and around the world -weekend workshops that will ‘Qualify’ you for almost anything. The blurbs usually read something along the lines of ‘Become a certified whatever in two days.”
These workshops, often costing many hundreds of dollars, give you around 14 hours of information and a pretty certificate. If the course is in flower arranging or how to fold your laundry, there wouldn’t be a problem, however, some courses advertise for such professions as clinical hypnotherapy.
Unfortunately, hypnosis is no longer governed by any State or Federal body. Deregulation began taking effect in 1998, and throughout all states by 2008, regulation was controlled by the individual state’s Psychologist’s Act. This Act restricted the practice of hypnosis to medical doctors, dentists, psychologist and those ‘approved’ by the State’s Psychologist Board.
To practice, it would be necessary to hold a Diploma or higher-level qualification in Clinical Hypnotherapy, be a member of an approved association and meet medical insurance needs. Now there is no legislation, hypnosis is a self-regulated industry, guided by a number of associations, associations that have no legal right outside of themselves.
What does this mean for the people attending these workshops, the industry and, more importantly, for their future clients?
Let’s start with the actual people (students) who pay a lot of money for a certificate that is not worth the paper it is printed on and the cost of the ink put together. These people come in with the best of intentions, to learn a recognised mental health modality in order to help others. They learn one scripted hypnosis induction, have minimal practice and off they go, feeling accomplished and ready to play with people’s minds.
Most of these workshops are inappropriately advertised, misleading people into thinking that, after the two days, they will be a certified hypnotherapist, when in fact at the end of the weekend they have a certificate that states they have completed an introductory course. The idea is to get people in, give them a taste and push them into signing on for a slightly longer course that will cost thousands of dollars.

Creating the Ultimate Business Vision
by Dr. Brooklyn Storme

What comes to mind when you think about creating a vision for your business?
After coaching business owners from all over the world, it seems that one thing many have in common, is a tendency to overlook this element of the business process.
Vision is critical for success
Regardless of where you are in your journey, there is always time to update your vision. In order to do this, we first need to understand what alignment is.
Alignment is simply when what you feel matches up with what you are thinking or doing. We say that we are out of alignment when things are not matching up. Here’s an example: Let’s imagine I have been advised to increase my fees. I understand that I should and that it is the right thing to do for the business, but I feel uncomfortable about it. I feel resistant, hesitant and heavy. For me to increase my fees now would be out of alignment with how I feel about it.
Imagine the same scenario. I’ve been asked to raise my fees. I know I provide an excellent service, I know my clients benefit from my teachings, and I know they get amazing value from the tools I provide. I haven’t updated my fee recently either so, yes, I will proceed and increase my fee. This is aligned with how I feel.
When we are creating (or updating) the business, the value of doing it from a place of alignment is priceless. When you feel like you are doing what you are born to do, the experience of business is one of excitement, of happy anticipation and of bright energy. And it’s this feeling that influences what you do, how you do it, who you work with, and your client base, how you market your business and more! Exercise: Imagine that you are working in your business from a place of alignment, what would you be doing?
