Talking to spirits or talking to ourselves? By Jason D Varga
When it comes to some paranormal phenomena, it does help to know the difference; what is really going on when we use tools such as pendulums, glass moving, Ouija boards and even table tipping. We need to know how to differentiate between when we are communicating with spirit and when we are tapping into our own subconscious or even higher self. Spirit communication is largely attributed, by those who are unaware of the difference, to what is really Ideomotor phenomenon. So what is Ideomotor phenomenon or response? According to the dictionary definition: Ideomotor phenomenon is a psychological phenomenon wherein a subject makes motions unconsciously. The Ideomotor response or Ideomotor reflex, often abbreviated to IMR, is a concept in hypnosis and psychological research. It is derived from the terms ‘ideo’, idea, or mental representation and ‘motor’ meaning muscular action. The phrase most commonly
refers to the process where a thought or mental image brings about a seemingly ‘reflexive’ or automatic muscular reaction, often of minuscule degree and potentially outside of the awareness of the subject. As in reflexive responses to pain, the body sometimes reacts reflexively with an Ideomotor effect to the idea alone, without the person consciously deciding to take action. The results of automatic writing, dowsing, facilitated communication and Ouija boards have all been attributed to the phenomenon. So what is really happening here? And, how can we avoid it or use it?
Let’s take the simple pendulum: when asking for guidance from spirit, it is advisable to hang the pendulum from something, to be ‘hands-off’ so to speak. This way it is not possible to influence the swing of the pendulum with our own subconscious thoughts. However, sometimes it is more helpful to actually tap into those locked away thoughts. For example, let’s say you have misplaced your keys, a common experience for most. The conscious mind may struggle to remember where you put them, but that information is still available at an unconscious level. So, by
using a pendulum to set up
yes/no questions to locate the keys or even to point you in the direction of the keys, can be a handy tool indeed.
There are various takes on the way to use a pendulum, but try it yourself. If you own a pendulum or a simple weight, such as a steel nut and bolt tied to a length of string, hold it as still as you can. Decide that a circle equals ‘Yes’, while a straight swing equals ‘No’. Now just think, “YES” over and over until the pendulum responds with the correct movement.
‘Physical’ phenomena such as glass moving and table tipping can be kick- started by IMR. The sitters around the table all want some sort of evidence and their unconscious minds will work together in a kind of group mind connection. Then, via IMR, they begin to tip the table or move the glass. The beautiful thing about this is that it builds belief and powerful psychic energy that opens the pathways for authentic spirit communication. A good medium does not need any of these ‘tools’ to communicate with spirit. The use of such visual displays is generally to give the sitters something tangible - seeing is believing. In turn, this removes any negative energy that may be blocking the authentic spirit communication. Also, let’s face it, whilst having stuff move around on its own accord is jolly good fun; it can also be a pathway to psychokinesis, the ability to move objects via thought alone.

My interest in séance and paranormal activity began when, as a child, I was fascinated by my grandmother’s collection of spiritual books, which also helped make me scared of the dark! I would sit in her room and pour over stories of table tipping, and messages from Ouija boards, photos of mediums producing ectoplasmic spirit entities from the various orifices of their bodies, and remember still a picture of an empty chair where a woman had once sat, a victim of spontaneous combustion-the only thing left, a pair of shoes and ashes.
My journey with the paranormal has been a natural one. I have been interested and disinterested, according to what has been going on in my life and my path. I am a professional medium and consider myself well versed in spiritual teachings and practical applications, but I also venture into the more physical and active side of phenomena and paranormal connection.
As you see with Jason’s part of this article, he is well versed in technicality, and understands the complexities and differences between what is, let’s say, of human creation and what is actually being instigated by a world, or level of nonphysical, becoming tangible via intentional and non-intentional action and reaction.
I feel it’s important to stress here, that this is not a game and that to entertain the idea of seeking spiritual and paranormal activity solely for a thrill, is both underestimating and disrespectful of the realms of which we cannot completely understand, nor comprehend. Doing so could open us to more than we are ready for and certainly more than we can deal with, whether it be because of paranormal overload or simply our own overwhelm.
More than a few of us, young and silly, or old and still as silly, have played with the Ouija board - glass rocking around and flying off, candles burning and espied apparitions, or thinking we have and scaring ourselves unnecessarily. I decided long ago that it wasn’t a good idea to play around as, in truth, I understood a lot of what my young friends did not. I was already privy to information and was a
clear seer and experiencer all my childhood and young adult life. I have learnt to love the company and accompanying noises, knocks and happenings that comes from living with and communicating with spirit on many levels. To someone who has no understanding and is vulnerable, unchecked it may cause psychological scars, fear, paranoia and misery.
What ‘spooks’ some people out, is my norm. However, I am well aware that there are entities and forms of negativity that I do not wish to have anything to do with, nor wish to attract.
As well as facilitating my groups and classes, designed to develop spiritual understanding, mediumship, and the psychic and intuitive facilities, I often bring in my ‘spooky table’ or Ouija board, as well as using ‘the cards’ on any given evening. I also host séance and communication evenings or soirees, often with both Jason and Anthony, our Editor.
During our séance soirees, we work with the board, writing down the messages as the planchette moves and, as the table twists, turns, spins and creaks, it has been shown to be of spirit orientation, as we haven’t been able to replicate it.
Jason has been satisfied that it is not we humans; it is coming from ‘the other side’.
While we have plenty of evidential mediumistic and visual information, at the same time lots of laughter ensues, as ‘the table’ does seem to like to show off a bit. We always work on a high and happy note and there are also tears or release realisation, with connections made that reminds us how wonderful and what a privilege it is to reconnect and communicate with those passed on. Watch Table Tipping 1 HERE: Watch Table Tipping 2 HERE: I want to remind you here that merely sitting in a group, or on one’s own to communicate, pray or connect with the spirit world or any type of otherworldly entity or realm, is considered to be working in the energy of the ‘occult’. This people more often than not associate with something scary and of dark vibration.
A séance is a meeting with the intent to communicate with the spirit world. My rules are always that it is done with love, care, respect and regard. What could be more special than that?
