buyer’s guide New Zealand Grocery Industry

competition or those hampered by supply chain issues. The past two years have seen consumer spending transfer from travel and entertainment to home and hearth, and this looks set to continue. Lockdown restrictions have had one outcome, less café buying (even with click and collect, look at the rise in coffee machine sales) and more grocery buying. Consumers have upped their purchases to cover snacking at home and more eat at-home meals. This trend looks to outlast the pandemic with some research showing that over half of consumers plan to continue with some of the eating habits they adopted in lockdown. Convenience at home, grab and go, meal kits, home delivery, to name a few, but frozen meals and snacks have been the big winners in the pandemic. Brands are upping the ante on these products with chef-inspired options, plant-based, new flavour variants, and healthconscious cuisine. Guilt-free indulgence got the big tick from consumers working from home. This change in buying habits has redefined snacking, with indulgent and guilt-free options trending. Evolving snacking into a balancing act of permissible indulgence, when snacks are a balance of indulgence, taste and health.

Tania Walters, Publisher, tania@reviewmags.com

The View Forward The industry has been cautious regarding forecasting for 2022, as digitalisation emerges as an essential source of competitive advantage.

D

igital tools have made it easier for brands to identify niche areas of demand to provide growth opportunities. The ability to analyse data has been made easier thanks to the cloud providing faster communication and efficiencies. Being agile, more speed boat than Titanic, has meant success for brand owners who can move swiftly to keep up with customers changing needs. Inflation is another area of opportunity for agile brands to win over from the less agile

Price will become more important to consumers as we enter 2022. Expect to see some consumer push back as interest rate hikes and rising inflation will see consumers look to save more or pay down debt. The postChristmas cash squeeze experts predict will be higher than pre-pandemic years. The brand challenge for 2022 will be helping consumers understand price points, explaining why a product is more expensive than another. Big banner supermarkets have had the advantage as they have been at the forefront of what it means to be an essential service. However, niche and local are on the rise as consumers look to support closer to home. Buying local has been the catch cry of COVID-19, with consumers wanting to support local brands and smaller community stores. However, the local movement is about more than just food. It is a gear change in why, where and how we consume. The rise in buying local has not only come out of necessity due to the pandemic, it has been driven by changes to banner groups buying patterns, products not being available, or brands exiting the market due to supply chain issues. It’s also come about because shoppers want that community connection. To be more than a loyalty number, have someone know them and

food& grocery COUNCIL NEW ZEALAND

greet them by name, and feel that their support makes a difference to their local community. Some clever smaller operators have benefited from this as they worked hard on the opportunity the lockdowns gave them to connect with their local community of shoppers. These operators have seen a rise in business as they stepped up to meet the demands of consumers not wanting to visit larger stores. They had the benefit of being small, local and some got niche targeting of the brands they were stocking down to a fine art. To make sure that consumers are brand aware means that 2022 will see a rise in advertising across mainstream media at the expense of what has become a crowded social media space. We are already seeing a lot more creativity in terms of tv advertising, expect billboard, radio and print to follow. Mainstream media took a back seat to social over the last few years. Expect a turnaround as the emptier spaces

on mainstream start to look attractive from both audience and price perspectives. Brand advertising always looks for the standout space. Social is very crowded; being a stand out brand in the social space will become even more challenging in 2022. Product launches always need support with strong consumer advertising to drive brand awareness. If online shopping has a negative, it must be that its success has come at the cost of NPD. Online shoppers seldom see new products as they shop from their favourites list and by-pass browsing. This consumer habit has hampered the path to market for a lot of new innovative brands. Online is not like in-store. Opportunities to grab consumers attention are limited. However, click and collect continues to shine from a practical viewpoint, with new lockers and pick up areas developing. The growing popularity of pickup is prompting global innovation in this space across more than just the fmcg sector.

Sustainability continues to be a hot button. It’s not enough these days to just taste good; the product must address its carbon footprint and impact on the planet. Among the forecasting, many products like functional, new flavours, low or no immunity, and plant-based products continue to trend upwards. Collabs are also on the rise as brands look to share both the risk and benefits of NPD while addressing the consumers desire to travel the world through their tastebuds. Ingredients to watch, flavours like hibiscus, ube and yuzu, while trends arising from the pandemic such as “drysolation” and “reducetarianis” will bring some well needed new buzz words to the sector and hopefully inspire NPD..

Katherine Rich, Chief Executive, NZ Food and Grocery Council

What a year! COVID is the gift no one wanted and it certainly won’t stop giving. In the Fast Moving Consumer Goods sector in New Zealand so much of what used to be predictable and free-flowing is now difficult and uncertain thanks to the coronavirus in all its forms.

E

ven with the best forecasting prowess few predicted the meltdown of global shipping, 400% container cost increases or that pallet scarcity could all become constraining factors. More than ever food and grocery manufacturers have had to be nimble and responsive to changing market conditions (as well as dealing with all the ever-changing COVID requirements). But one thing remains certain and that’s the contribution and value of the NZ Grocery Industry Buyer’s Guide. This guide is such a valuable resource to all those who work in our industry and as CEO of the New Zealand Food & Grocery Council I am so grateful to Tania Walters and her team for the huge amount of work they invest into the collation and presentation of this Who’s Who in our industry. I refer to my copy of the Buyer’s Guide often because I regularly get enquiries from FGC members wanting to reach out to others to collaborate or to secure a service for new

product ideas. The questions are wide and varied like, know anyone who can contract pack fruit syrups? Any ideas who does beverage canning? Where can I source dried fruits? Can you tell us who makes cans? Or does New Zealand still produce soap?...These are just examples of questions I get and (for those where I don’t know) time and time again the Buyer’s Guide delivers answers and helps me broker potential connections. Over the years I have also shared it with offshore food industry colleagues and been delighted to hear that this serendipitous sharing has resulted in new sales for the firms in the book. The Buyer’s Guide in effect has become an informal ambassador for our local New Zealand businesses providing in one place valuable contact details, and a positive overview of new and established FMCG suppliers. So congratulations again to all involved. Can’t wait to read the new list.

KIWI WINE HAS WINGS: NZ Wine in High Demand at Home and Overseas

I

nternational demand for New Zealand wine shows no sign of slowing, with export value reaching $599 million in the first quarter of the new export year, up 9 percent on the previous year. The demand for New Zealand wine is also reflected in an increase in price per litre, with the September quarter 2021 average value up 4 percent from September 2020. “The ongoing demand for New Zealand wine has proven that the distinctive flavours, quality and sustainability of our wines increasingly resonate with consumers around the world. It is encouraging to see that during these uncertain times, consumers continue to choose a premium product they know that they can trust,” noted Philip Gregan, CEO of New Zealand Winegrowers. Although the quality of the 2021 vintage was exceptional throughout New Zealand’s wine regions, the overall harvest was much smaller than hoped for, with 370,000 tonnes of grapes harvested during the 2021 vintage - down 19 percent on last year’s crop. This reduced supply is reflected in the decrease in volume of exports, with YTD September 2021 exports down 3 percent on the previous year.

“Successfully managing the market impacts of the resulting supply constraints is a key focus for many in the New Zealand wine industry. Wineries are having to make tough decisions over who they can supply in their key markets.” In addition, increasing production costs, the on-going effects of COVID-19 on the border and markets, and strained supply chains, have continued to impact growers and wineries. The projected labour shortage and unavailability of skilled workers due to the ongoing closure of New Zealand’s borders remains a key concern, as these workers play a vital role in enabling the industry to meet the critical seasonal work peaks. “With ongoing uncertainty at New Zealand’s borders, our industry is working hard to attract new people to our sector, to ensure we have the personnel in place to bring in the 2022 crop, to make our premium wine, and complete winter pruning. The recent decision to allow quarantine free travel for RSE workers is positive, and we continue to work with government to ensure that they are aware of the impact labour shortages will have on our members if they are not able to attract the workforce they need.”

ongoing demand for New Zealand wine “hasThe proven that the distinctive flavours, quality and sustainability of our wines increasingly resonate with consumers around the world.

2022 NZ Grocery Industry Buyer’s Guide

Philip Gregan, CEO NZ Winegrowers

Wine businesses that sell predominantly through the on-premise and tourism sectors continue to experience significant challenges. “Domestically, restrictions on operations of hospitality businesses are a major stress point for wineries dependent on that sector. Cellar doors have been hit hard by the collapse in international tourist numbers, as well as the impact of current restrictions on regional travel. Positively, we have seen more New Zealanders visiting cellar doors, but there are long, lean periods outside of the traditional Kiwi holiday period.” COVID-19 has also greatly impacted the supply chain over the past year, with the ability to ship products to market becoming an everincreasing concern. “Like every industry dependent on seafreight, the ability for New Zealand wineries to ship products to market has been greatly impacted, as transport costs more than double and shipping reliability plunges. Unfortunately, this is a worldwide problem without any quick fix.” By NZ Winegrowers

THE GREAT GROCERY EDIT OF 2022

Weighing unpredictable inflammatory prices, a prioritisation of wellbeing along with an enduring pandemic, consumers are selfediting their grocery baskets by asking themselves one fundamental question: ‘Do I need this?’

A

ccording to a recent report from Nielsen IQ , when making purchasing decisions ‘Do I need this?’ is no longer just a question to gut check an impulsive purchase. Instead, it is now a critically important decision filter for all things tied to the broadening state of consumer wellbeing. “Just as people are quitting their jobs in the ‘Great Resignation’ to find something better, the ‘Great Grocery Edit’ in 2022 will

10

I

2022 NZ Grocery Industry Buyer’s Guide

see consumers intentionally edit their trolleys, re-write their grocery lists and quit brands altogether for options that better meet the necessities of health, wellbeing, value (both price and purpose) and availability,” noted Genevieve Aronson, global head of thought leadership, Nielsen IQ. Now more than ever, health and wellness are huge factors that consumers take into consideration when grocery shopping. Among the most important needs, consumers are looking for products that promote self-care and improve physical or emotional wellbeing. Far from a new trend in the health and wellness space, the movement towards mindful consumption has become more urgent for many consumers. “Across the global consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, a more holistic notion of health and wellness is flourishing. To think about consumer health and wellness just through the limited lens of diet culture, fandom fitness, and niche health crazes is already archaic. It is no longer just a section of a store or a segment of a person’s lifestyle,” continued Aronson. “To consumers, health, wellness, and wellbeing are now in the everyday choices they make. It’s everything and everywhere, challenging meaningful relevance in every CPG category that a consumer chooses to buy.” Consumers are also paying attention to what companies are doing.

Across all retail sectors, consumers expect businesses and governments to play a more active role in their health and wellbeing journey. In fact, a majority (72%) of surveyed global consumers feel that companies have a big role to play in the availability and access of healthy food for all. In fact, most global consumers (63%) would be more likely to buy from companies with a strong health mandate across their whole product portfolio.  “Consumers will not hesitate to dump brands that aren’t delivering on the needs that are now deemed a personal priority. “Shoppers are expressing a rising appetite for shopping local, experimental items that empower or educate, gifting charitable donations, or opting for sustainable attributes and altruistic promotions.” To consumers, health is everything and everywhere, and the companies who fail to address this are already at risk of falling behind the curve. Health and wellness shouldn’t be a subset or a secondary focus to any business initiative. Its relevance is now broad enough to bring opportunity to nearly every CPG category around the world. With a forward look into the future, companies need to be flexible, yet focused on the changing needs of consumers as they move up and down the hierarchy of health and wellness needs.

POTATO CHIPS FRESH FROM THE HEARTLAND What started as an after school job and evolved into a lifelong dream has gone on to become the pride of the South and a true Kiwi success story for the Bowan family. South Canterbury-based Raymond Bowan grew up around potatoes. He earned his pocket money digging up spuds on the neighbouring property. Years later, Raymond had the opportunity to fulfill his dream and Heartland Chips was launched in 2010. Heartland’s potatoes are all grown at Fallgate, the Bowan family farm located just outside Timaru. From there they’re transported 30km down the road to the Heartland Chips factory in Washdyke. Here they’re sliced, cooked, packaged and distributed throughout New Zealand. Ten years down the track, the company remains 100% family-owned and operated by the Bowans. Raymond and his wife Adrienne run the company with their children. Daughter Charlotte is the General Manager, son James the Farm Manager and

younger daughter Kate is also involved. The brand launched with a single range of Old Fashioned Wave Cut chips in five flavours. Today, Heartland boasts five

different styles of chips, with The Finest Flat Cuts, Premium Crafted Kettle Cooked Crisps, Thickest of the Thick cuts and most recently ‘Nude’ chips joining the family.

Paragon

MultiPlex Ltd

Total Sales and Marketing Solutions

Paragon MultiPlex Ltd are a privately owned

company offering a wide range of services within the narrow supermarket and independent grocery sectors. One gains considerable experience and builds robust relationships when working within New Zealand's highly concentrated and competitive grocery industry over 35+ years as a distributor and outsourced sales force. Experience and industry insights shouldn't be taken lightly. Our team at Paragon MultiPlex certainly don't and the successful brand building that we have been involved with over this time is testament to the values that we place on these attributes. Never more have these particular attributes been called for or valued than they are in today's rapidly changing grocery landscape. We know what works

and how to deliver results. We are not afraid to ask the hard questions, either at the retail level or further up the chain, or of our suppliers. If this sounds a little uncompromising then ask yourself, are you happy with your market penetration? Do you know what your category managers are looking for? Do you know how to deliver what they are looking for? Are your relationships robust enough to have the hard conversations with all parties? The Paragon MultiPlex team can say yes to all of this and what's more we can point to successes to support our proposition. If you were to partner with us we can offer you real-time

insights into retail activity at shelf level, excellent relationships right across the grocery sector right up to senior management level. We constantly survey activity reporting on success and failures alike with these reports being shared with you on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. If you are finding it tough to build your brand, are unhappy with your current sales regime, or simply want some assistance, reach out and give us a call.

Contact us on 03 354 4065, email Sales@paragon-multiplex.co.nz or contact Phillip via Phii Iip@paragon-multiplexco.nz, 027 432 0349.
