MAKING HOME YOUR HAVEN Caitlan Mitchell, Editor, caitlan@reviewmags.com

T

he Kiwi dream is and will always be to have your own home. To have the freedom to do whatever you want, paint the kitchen fluro orange, have a gold tap – the sky's the limit. A few weeks ago, my husband and I bought our first home. We are bouncing off the walls to put our mark on our beautiful home. While most people dream of flawless white walls, my hubby and I are kind of maximalists… After the auction, I said in passing to him: “I wonder what colour we should paint the front door?” to which he replied: “Obviously bright pink.” I knew right then and there that not only was our house going to be wild, but that I had married the perfect man. Planning is extremely important, along with thorough research. If you don’t have a Pinterest account, go get one. The best way to ensure you are on the right track is to find 20 different images of the same style or concept for a room, and if you are still happy - go hard. However, if you only like one hero image in a certain house, you are probably not going to achieve it. It is very

much like going to a hair salon with black hair and wanting to be platinum blonde by lunch. Be realistic with what your space looks like in comparison to your reference images. Also get a builders report if you have crazy dreams of knocking walls down. Always get a professional opinion, help or support before you start swinging your DIY hammer. It can be a really exciting and liberating time to find your own style. For the last five years I thought I was a MidCentury-Modernist, but now I realise – I’m a Maximalist, baby. Loud. Colourful. Unapologetically shocking. While for most, it is quite acceptable to have plain white walls, I feel like at times we are constantly trying to fit a cookie cutter mold where we must follow and seek out trends. For me, everything in my home has to make me smile or laugh or feel something. For my birthday this year, I was given a very large sculpture of a corn cob that was intended to be a footstool but I have it proudly sitting on a table. Hands down, the best gift I have ever received.

I am a huge fan of shock value, but I do understand limitations around this if you are on a budget like me. Hardware around the house like door handles, tapware, and so on – versatility always wins. When dressing a room, I put all the personality into things I can change easily. Paint and wallpaper. I may have a grey couch, but I have colourful loud throw pillows and blankets to decorate it. Decor is very easily changed whereas a pink fridge is a pink fridge (no regrets). I buy a lot of second hand furniture online and refurbish them myself to save some moolah. Pink bathroom? Why not! I was talking to my husband about a really intense and aggressive flamingo wallpaper for a small bathroom, and he couldn’t stop laughing after I showed it to him. You don’t always need to worry about the resale value of your house because for right now in this moment, it is your home. And it should only serve you. So go on, jump in, the water is fine.

Choosing an engineered stone benchtop/vanity top? Trips overseas are a bit of a distant memory, so you’re deciding to renovate your kitchen or bathroom or contemplating a new build. We share the top five things to consider and try to debunk some myths about engineered stone. WHAT IS ENGINEERED STONE? It is a durable product made from quartz aggregates bonded with resin which is created in slab form. Quartz is one of the hardest minerals on earth making it more durable than natural stones like granite or marble, doesn’t require sealing and is virtually non-porous. Only an approved/ qualified Stonemason/fabricator can cut and handle engineered stone safely, otherwise warranties could be void. Watch outs Not all engineered stones are equal! A quality reconstituted engineered stone will have a higher quartz to resin ratio and varying resin quality which will influence the price. IS IT EASY TO CLEAN AND MAINTAIN? WILL IT STAIN? Engineered stone is relatively easy to clean, but it is influenced by the amount of quartz

to resin ratio and the finish (e.g. polished, rough etc). Most stains should be able to be cleaned with warm soapy water. Some finishes may require more regular cleaning as it doesn’t disguise marks as well as polished finishes. Get advice from a designer/kitchen maker/stonemason over the stain resistance of the product you’re interested in. Watch outs All spillages should be cleaned away as quickly as possible. Always use stone safe/ non-abrasive cleaners otherwise it could deteriorate and dull the surface’s shine (avoid anything that has caustic soda in it). Also, do not use the same cloth you use to wash your dishes as it may transfer oils and other contaminants to your surface. WHAT IS THE COST OF ENGINEERED STONE? The cost varies between brands therefore it is hard to give an exact cost. Influencers of price/total cost of project: quality (quartz to resin ratio and quality of resin) and final design (colour, size of kitchen, quantity of slabs required and labour costs etc). We recommend you contact a kitchen maker or stonemason fabricator to obtain a formal quote/consultation.

Watch outs Some engineered stone brands are lower price than others which could often mean the compromise over things like quartz to resin ratio, quality of resin, warranty and durability. WHAT ELSE CAN ENGINEERED STONE BE USED FOR? Engineered stone predominantly is used for benchtops/vanity tops but it can be used for splashbacks or cabinetry fronts. Watch outs If using engineered stone as cabinetry front, consider how your drawers will open – do you like pull outs, or would you rather have push outs as that could influence the design of your cabinetry drawer fronts. TRUE OR FALSE: YOU CAN PUT HOT POTS/PANS ETC ON ENGINEERED STONE BENCHTOPS FALSE! Engineered stone is heat resistant, but any good provider will tell you that engineered stone can tolerate very brief exposure of moderate hot temperatures, but prolonged direct contact with heat from pots and pans can cause thermal shock which could discolour and damage your benchtop.

Tip Do not put hot cookware directly on your engineered stone surface. Always use a wooden board or heat trivet to place a hot item on. If your hand cannot tolerate the level of heat from the pot or pan for more than a few seconds, then it is too high for your benchtop!

everything you need to know about

choosing a kitchen benchtop Written by Lisa Alward, Bella Vie Founder and Interior Designer

When you are undertaking a kitchen renovation there are so many decisions and choosing a kitchen benchtop for your new kitchen can seem a little overwhelming. In this article we share the most common types of kitchen benchtops, which stone is more expensive and how to choose a kitchen benchtop for your new kitchen.

Fennec Home

HOW TO CHOOSE A KITCHEN BENCHTOP A kitchen bench not only provides a functional aspect to a kitchen, it also plays a huge role in determining the finished aesthetic of a kitchen. The type of kitchen bench top you ultimately choose depends on what your priorities are. Price, colour, durability and uniqueness all factor into making a decision on which type of kitchen bench top you should select. Taking the time to really think through which kitchen benchtop is best for your kitchen renovation can take time but if you get it right the results will be so worthwhile. WHAT IS THE BEST MATERIAL FOR KITCHEN BENCHTOPS? Here we talk through ten of the main kitchen benchtop options for you to read up on the pros and cons and help you to choose the best benchtop for your kitchen renovation.

MARBLE Marble is natural stone with a beautiful and unique finish. It is timeless and elegant and there are many different types of marble varying in colour and pattern. Marble is considered a luxury benchtop option. Carrara marble is probably the most common marble used on kitchen benchtops in Australia and may be less expensive than other types of marble as well as being a firm favourite in Hamptons style kitchens and bathrooms. When you decide to go with a marble kitchen bench top, you will have the opportunity to visit a supplier and personally select your slab to suit your individual taste. Choosing a finish for your marble will depend on the style of your kitchen. Polished, honed and leathered are the most common finishes each with a different

appearance. Marble has a long history of use in residential interiors and has a reputation for being difficult to maintain. Yes, it can be delicate, but if it is sealed correctly and used as recommended it delivers incomparable beauty. While placing hot items on a marble benchtop doesn’t result in damage, it is not recommended. Acidic products such as lemon and red wine cause a chemical reaction on the surface and dull the bench top. Etching as it is known, is perhaps one of the biggest concerns of using marble in the kitchen, but with proper care it is preventable. QUARTZ / ENGINEERED STONE Quartz or Engineered stone is a man-made product that contains approximately 93%

crushed quartz crystals combined with resin to bind it all together. Pigment is added to create the large range of colours available. It is often referred to a Caesarstone however there is a range of other brands on the market in Australia including Quantum Quartz, Silestone, Smartstone and Essastone. The price for engineered stone varies depending on colour and pattern and varies from standard to luxury ranges. Engineered stone is popular and practical due to its large colour range, consistency in colour and pattern, and price. Engineered stone is resistant to scratches, cracks and spills however care still needs to be taken to treat an engineered stone kitchen bench with care. It is available in a variety of finishes including polished, matte, honed, concrete and rough. Engineered stone is not recommended for uncovered outdoor applications as it will fade. Engineered stone comes in a standard 20mm thickness with 30mm offered in some colours and 12 or 13mm available by some brands for vertical applications. Slabs vary in size from standard to jumbo and availability may affect your selection if you have a larger kitchen island or bench. POLISHED CONCRETE If you’re after an industrial style kitchen, then you’ll no doubt be considering concrete for your kitchen benchtop. Polished Concrete can vary in colour depending on the mix of cement, aggregate and sand. If left unfinished it is porous and to avoid staining should be finished and can be repolished if damage occurs to the surface. Like both natural and engineered stone polished concrete chips easily and care needs to be taken not to drop items onto it. SOLID SURFACE Commonly referred to as Corian, solid surface is manufactured from a natural mineral refined from bauxite and blended with pure acrylic resin. Its unique composition gives it strength and fireretardant properties. Solid surface is able to be moulded and provides a seamless surface making it a great choice for large surfaces like a kitchen benchtop. It is extremely hygienic as there are no joins and very easy to keep clean if used to cove where the kitchen benchtop meets the splashback. It can be used on the fronts of cabinetry for a seamless finish and is translucent meaning it can be backlit for a stunning effect. While solid surface does scratch if objects are dragged across it, it is repairable by the manufacturer and entire pieces can be cut out and replaced if required. LAMINATE The most popular budget option, laminate has been popular for years. Huge advances in laminate now mean it is available in colours and finishes to suit just about any kitchen style. www.fennecandfriends.com

11

Laminex, Polytec and Nikpol are all brands of laminate. Laminate is a man-made product made of layers of paper over a chipboard, ply or MDF board. It is known to be extremely durable to scratching and can tolerate heat briefly. It can swell if water does get into areas where the surface may be damaged. Laminate is a great choice if you want the designer look for your kitchen benchtop but don’t have the budget. It can be used to create almost any look and can be used to produce a waterfall edge and seamless joins for larger surfaces. TIMBER Timber kitchen benchtops are becoming increasingly popular for their organic nature and rustic appearance. Timber has the ability to be repaired and is a soft surface to place items onto. It needs to be finished with oil or polyurethane to protect the surface. Oiled kitchen benchtops require you to regularly re-apply the oil to prevent drying out and cracking. Spills should be wiped straight away with a damp cloth for an oiled surface and warm soapy water or spray and wipe type products for polyurethane surfaces. Care needs to be taken not to place hot pans or trays onto a timber bench. Timber can be sanded back and refinished if damage occurs to the surface.

STAINLESS STEEL If a gourmet kitchen is your style, then stainless steel could be a great choice. Stainless steel is hygienic and durable and both heat and stain resistant. It can be wrapped around bench edges for a seamless edge on your kitchen benchtop. Stainless steel can dent if items are dropped on it and does show fingerprints and accepting its changing appearance over time would be required. Stainless steel is an expensive but long wearing kitchen benchtop option. PORCELAIN Porcelain slabs are becoming increasingly popular for kitchen benchtops. A lightweight option with large slab sizes allows it to be used for both the benchtop and splashback in a kitchen. Patterns can even be book-matched for oversize areas making it impressive for feature a splashback. One of the biggest drawbacks for porcelain has been the higher cost of fabricating charged by stonemasons. Setting this aside, it is a great option for a durable benchtop. It is resistant to heat and scratching and suitable for both indoor and outdoor kitchens. GRANITE Granite is a natural stone that suits both contemporary and classic kitchens. Granite resists staining and bacteria as well as resisting

heat and scratches. Granite can also be polished to a very high gloss level and are not affected by acidic products such as lemon juice and red wine. For an alternative to a polished finish consider honed for a matt look, leathered for a sophisticated, textured appearance or hammered for a textured, rustic look. Granite is probably the most durable of all kitchen benchtop options, however it doesn’t have the same pattern as the more commonly used marbles. Granite should be regularly sealed to keep it looking in good. This is usually done once a year. ULTRA-COMPACT Made from a mixture of inorganic raw materials found in glass, porcelain tile and natural quartz, ultra-compact is more commonly known as the brand name Dekton. Highly resistant to impact, scratches and abrasion Dekton is ideal for use in high-traffic areas and has very low water absorption. Large slab sizes are available and its resistance to UV make it ideal for outdoor kitchen benchtops and splashbacks. Its thickness can vary between 8 and 30mm depending on the application. Dekton have trained fabricators who specialise in dealing with this harder than usual benchtop surface. Be aware that while this is a more expensive benchtop option it is a durable, quality product with high visual appeal.

WHICH TYPE OF STONE IS MORE EXPENSIVE, ENGINEERED STONE OR NATURAL STONE A common perception is that natural stone is more expensive that engineered stone but this is not always true. Engineered stones have different price ranges depending on the colour and pattern type while natural stones vary greatly in price depending on the colour and type of stone. The high-end engineered stones can in some instances, be more expensive than say granite for example. A large granite slab may end up being more cost effective than two slabs of engineered stone. The only way to get a true comparison is to take your short list of kitchen benchtop options to a stone fabricator and request a quote. DO YOUR REASEARCH OR ASK AN EXPERT Researching the best benchtop for your new kitchen can save a lot of headaches further down the track and ensure you get the best product for your home.

10 Tips to help you choose the right kitchen benchtop 1. Physically check a large sample of the product. They can be very different to an image in a magazine or online. 2. Consider the type of sink you want to install. A drop-in or top mounted sink can be used with any benchtop material, while an undermount doesn’t suit all products. 3. If you are coordinating your own benchtop fabrication and installation, check the installer is accredited to use your chosen product. 4. Check the warranty prior to selecting a product. 5. Follow the care and maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer. 6. Don’t place hot saucepans or pots directly on the bench top. 7. Don’t cut foods directly on the surface and always use a chopping board. 8. Wipe up spills immediately. Leaving them can result in stains. 9. Consider the type of cleaning products you use. Not all cleaning products are suitable for all surfaces and can dull the surface or strip the colour. 10. Choose something you love. Benchtops are with you for a long time.

How to Layer Lighting r u o Y e k a M d An Home Shine Written by Daniela Gonzalez, Porch

Are you feeling dissatisfied with your current home décor, but not sure what needs a change? Before you swap out the furniture, paint your walls, or upgrade your floors, it’s important to make sure that your current lighting plan is one that complements your home style. Lighting has the ability to make or break the look and feel of your home. Without the right lighting, focal points, architectural details, unique textures, and even gorgeous colors can get lost. The key to a good lighting plan is a layered approach that combines four types of light: Ambient, task, accent and decorative lighting. Here’s how to use all four to make your home shine. STEPS FOR DESIGNING YOUR HOME LIGHTING PLAN Before you look for different types of lighting, it’s essential to create a lighting plan in advance. Here are some steps to take that will guide you for your new light design at home. ◆ Set a budget. New light fixtures and accent lighting can add up quickly, so it’s crucial to set a budget before starting your new lighting design. Consider things like how many lights you plan to install, what type you want, and where you plan to purchase them. If you need to hire an electrician, don’t forget to take that into account, too. ◆ Choose a style. Lighting comes in a myriad of styles that range from modern to industrial and traditional. Think about which type you most prefer, then try to purchase pieces in the same or similar theme, so everything looks cohesive. ◆ Layer your lighting. To create a home lighting plan, you’ll want to use layers

40

Fennec Home

for the best look and functionality. The three main types of lighting are ambient, accent, and task lighting. Each form of lighting serves a purpose and has its role in every room. Once all three layers come together, you can finish with some decorative lighting pieces for a nice finishing touch. ◆ Pick out a statement piece. One part of your complete lighting plan design should be bolder than the rest if you want it to be a focal point in the room. A decorative chandelier is an excellent way to create a bit of drama in rooms like the dining or living area, for example. ◆ Think about functionality. Different rooms require different types of light, so it’s vital to choose lighting that will help make the room as versatile and usable as possible. Consider task lighting ideas like installing several pendants over your kitchen island to make chopping and prepping food easier. A light over the sink or an overhead fixture in a laundry room will make household tasks more manageable. ◆ Measure carefully. When installing new lighting at home, it’s important to make sure that each fixture fits appropriately within the allotted space. Make sure overhead lighting is high up enough that you don’t bump your head when you get up from the dining room table, for example. If you’re adding wall light fixtures, make sure they’re evenly spaced apart from each other once installed. ◆ Look for energy-saving lights. LED lights are bright, long-lasting, and eco-friendly. Look for new lighting technology and designs that feature energy-efficient options so you can save money every time you turn them on. ◆ Try multifunctional options. Some new lighting is mobile, which means you can

pick it up and use it throughout the home. Table lamps and floor lamps can also easily be moved. Other options include installing switches that will dim the light, change the lightbulb color, or adjust the lighting temperature to give you more options as you need them. AMBIENT LIGHTING Ambient lighting provides an area with overall illumination. Also known as general lighting, it radiates a comfortable level of brightness without glare and allows you to see and walk around without tripping over things. Ambient lighting can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling, or wall-mounted fixtures, as well as recessed or track lights. Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting plan. Design Tip: For recessed lighting, consider the size of your fixtures to determine appropriate spacing. A common rule is that four-inch fixtures should generally be placed at least four feet apart and six-inch fixtures about six feet apart. A decorative chandelier or hanging foyer fixture can provide powerful illumination while serving as a beautiful focal point for living areas. Commonly used for task lighting applications, you can also use pendants for ambient lighting with a bit of creativity. Designer Doris Pearlman with Possibilities for Design used Progress Lighting’s Bay Court pendants to create a stunning spectacle that beautifully lights this great room. TASK LIGHTING Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, cooking, or playing games. You can create it with

pendant lights, low-hanging track lights, and under-cabinet lighting. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows while bringing the source of light to exactly where you need it. When determining the best applications for task lighting, consider the function of the room. What activities will you be performing that require direct lighting? The rooms where task lighting is imperative are the kitchen (where you’ll need counter lighting to enhance kitchen safety when using knives and the stovetop) and the bathroom (where you’ll need adequate light to complete everyday tasks, shaving and putting on makeup). Under-cabinet fixtures are very functional additions for turning your countertops into usable workspaces. Under-cabinet lighting is available in various applications, including LED lights, puck lights, linear lights, and tape lights. Design Tip: The key to lighting your bathroom is to provide shadow-free task lighting at the mirrors. In addition to an overhead vanity light, add side sconces with a companion close-to-ceiling light to reduce shadows on the sides of your face. Focus pendant lights on a specific work area, such as over a sink or island. One small pendant may be sufficient for particular task applications. For larger spaces, consider placing pendants in a row at equal heights for a clean, contemporary look. ACCENT LIGHTING Accent lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of an interior design scheme, it is used to draw the eye to key features such as houseplants, paintings, sculptures, and other focal points. Accent lighting can also be used for your home’s exterior to highlight the texture of a brick wall, a window treatment, or a landscaping feature. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting surrounding it. Accent lighting is usually provided by recessed and track lighting or by wall-mounted picture lights. Track lighting with moveable track heads is perfect for highlighting wall art and creating depth to the room layout. Wall sconces can also be used for accent lighting. Here, a uniquely shaped shade casts exciting details on an otherwise bland wall. One of the most versatile fixtures, pendant lamps, can be used for accent lighting, especially to highlight favorite pieces on tables and shelves. Select a pendant-style that reflects your décor. Modern pendants made of glass exude sleekness, while a shaded mini-pendant creates a classic look. DECORATIVE LIGHTING While the three main layers of lighting are important, decorative lighting puts the icing on the cake. This type of lighting provides

42

Fennec Home

you with an opportunity to add a bold touch that will make your home sparkle and shine. Decorative lighting should be unique, so consider these tips to find just the right style of decorative lights for your home. Sleek wall sconces installed in a hallway or entryway illuminate your path and give your home a modern vibe. Lighting accented with sleek metal frames or colored glass shades adds a burst of color and visual interest to a hallway, bathroom, or bedroom. ◆ Pendant lights, which bring lots of decorative flair to a home, have swappable shades to match your taste. ◆ Mini pendants are an excellent lighting option that can be installed in a foyer or a corner of the room that could use a little extra light or a touch of drama. ◆ Floor lamps or table lamps with a unique globe, metallic, or colored glass shades add texture and interest to your room. ◆ Unusual designs, like a horse-shaped lamp base with a faux-horsehair shade, an eight-bulb octopus-shaped lamp, or a light-up globe, are great conversation starters and provide strategically placed lighting for ambiance or reading. ◆ LED light strips mounted to the wall in an unusual shape will give the room a bright pop and a contemporary touch. ◆ An antique lamp can be rewired to modern specifications and serve as a focal piece in your room. ◆ Nothing says decorative lighting, quite like a stunning chandelier. Install a sparkling crystal chandelier to add a touch of glitz and glamor to your favorite part of the home. ◆ Fans of ultra-modern decor might love a bold Sputnik-style ceiling light or metallic

Art Deco sconces along a hallway. ◆ Flush-mount ceiling lights are much more beautiful when they have decorative elements like a crystal shade around them. ◆ Pendant lights with a large shade made of woven material like seagrass or rattan are a perfect choice to create a boho-chicinspired space. Design tip: Look for decorative lighting featuring a finish you like, then incorporate it throughout the home. A matte black metal finish accented with gold detailing looks sleek and sophisticated for modern and industrial homes alike. The key is to find a few decorative features that suit your design style, then bring that element in with each piece of lighting you install so that everything is seamless. Decorative lighting is what gives your home personality. A utilitarian light simply works to illuminate an area, while decorative lighting has unique and ornate features that bring your decor together. After you’re done planning your home lighting design, look for light fixtures that will really add a dramatic component to each room. Depending on the application, the same type of fixture can fit all four categories of lighting. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and move away from traditional molds to create a layered lighting plan. Try a chandelier in the bathroom, pendants in the living room, or a recessed fixture in the shower. The most important thing is that you love the layout and design of your home and perform everyday tasks with simplicity and ease.

hether you live in an area surrounded by nature or you’re in the midst of a major city, it’s important to connect with nature as much as possible to boost your mood and lower stress levels. Even if you don’t have access to a lush botanical landscape, you can still enjoy everything nature has to offer in your own home. An indoor plant wall gives you the opportunity to connect with the natural world without ever having to set foot outside the home. This fun project will not only add beauty to your space, but will also cultivate a love and appreciation for caring for plants, and for the environment. WHY WE SHOULD CONNECT TO NATURE It’s not just important to connect to nature because we live in it. Spending time in nature has a positive impact on our mental and physical health. Here are some reasons why it’s so vital to stay connected with the outside world Better health. Nature has positive impacts on health in many different ways. Connecting to the natural world can actually have healing effects on the mind, body, and spirit. When you spend time in a natural environment, it may lower your blood pressure and heart rate, creating a calming effect on both the body and the mind. Going outdoors promotes healthy exercise, which can increase muscle mass and lower body weight over time. It may also help to boost your immune system by providing your body with a natural source of vitamin D. Greater spirituality. In addition to the physical benefits, connecting to nature also promotes spiritual enhancement. Just taking a walk amongst plants and animals can remind you how we all play a vital role in the world, and how we connect together as one. When you’re outdoors, take a moment to soak in the sights, smells, and sounds of nature. This is a wonderful way to appreciate nature’s many meditative properties and give yourself a spiritual cleanse. You’ll also gain a new appreciation for the world and all that it has to offer. Higher sense of wellbeing. Spending just a few minutes each day outdoors or around nature can help you “reset,” giving you a fresh and new sense of optimism to take on your day. Taking in the environment around you will improve your psychological wellbeing and help you to de-stress. Studies have shown that connecting with nature can help with conditions like depression and improve cognition. You’ll start to develop a

positive outlook and feel calmer as you make and strengthen your connection to nature. THE HUMAN-NATURE CONNECTION RELATIONSHIP In many ways, the modern world has altered the human-nature connection. However, by developing a deep appreciation for nature, humans can restore the respect that the environment deserves. By fostering a healthy relationship with nature, you’ll also develop a better understanding of how plants and animals live, and how they depend on humans to protect their safety and well-being. From humans’ evolutionary biology and psychology to the economy, everything is directly connected to the natural world. Developing a strong bond with nature will give you an opportunity to appreciate just how deeply everything is connected together. BENEFITS OF A LIVING WALL Ornamental plant decoration for vertical garden There are many benefits to designing a living wall or vertical garden in your home ■ Living walls can make you happier. When you see greenery or flowers inside your home, it will instantly boost serotonin levels, making you feel happier within just a few minutes. ■ Plants absorb carbon dioxide, which can help to clean and purify the air inside your home. Add a lush green wall indoors and you’ll get better air quality and cleaner, safer indoor air. ■ A plant wall can reduce the temperature in your home, creating a cooler climate that may even lower your energy bill. Since plants absorb sunlight, it can make the room feel cooler while reducing the need for your air conditioner to run constantly. ■ Place your living wall where you need a little more peace and quiet. Your plans can absorb the noise, giving you a much quieter, calmer place to relax. ■ Just looking at your plants can reduce stress. Fill your plant wall with your favorites so you’ll feel calm and happy every single day. ■ Since plants have a positive psychological impact, they can also boost your productivity. Add a living wall to your home office and watch your productivity levels increase. ■ A lush plant wall adds value to your home. Consider adding one to the inside and outside to improve curb appeal, reduce energy costs, and make your home more visually appealing.

HOW TO CREATE A GREEN WALL Here are the steps needed to create your very own living plant wall at home Plant selection. Start by choosing a variety of plants for your living wall. The type of plants you choose may vary depending on your local climate, how much sunlight they’ll get, and how difficult they are to care for. Research a variety of indoor plants to help you find the right ones for your indoor vertical garden. You may go through some trial and error until you find the right combination of plants for you. Location. Choosing the right location for your green wall is key to a healthy and lush indoor vertical garden. Place your living wall in a part of the home that will get ample natural light. If your home doesn’t have a lot of sunlight, you may need to supplement with grow lights to keep your plants happy and healthy. Maintenance. Make sure you understand how to care for all of the plants in your green wall. Ideally, they should all have the same or similar amount of sunlight and watering requirements. If the plant’s needs vary too much, some plants may not be healthy, while others will thrive based on how much light they get and other factors. Look into the care of your plants to make sure that the living wall is something you can easily maintain. Display options. Think about how you want to display your living wall, whether it’s a tall shelf with a lot of pots or a sturdy tall frame that holds several containers of dirt. Some green walls become permanent fixtures, while others can be moved around as needed. Explore a few options before you decide which one will work for you so that it’s easy to care for and cultivate your plants while adding an attractive aesthetic to the room. Lighting. Some plants require full sun, while others only need partial or dappled sunlight. Check where the light comes into your home, and place the green wall in a part of the room that will get enough of it throughout the day. Low-light plants (like pothos or snake plants) can thrive without a ton of sunlight, so these may be best if you live in an apartment or a place without a lot of windows. Irrigation. Your plants need water to stay healthy, so make sure you have a good irrigation system in place. Self-watering planters can be helpful, but you may also need to soak your plants from time to time. Just be sure that your irrigation system won’t create a mess of water and soil all over your floors. A watering can makes it easy to

54

Fennec Home

do some quick watering of the topsoil, while a small tube irrigation system can help you water all of the plants’ root systems at once. REASONS TO ADD A PLANT WALL TO YOUR HOME Whether you want to lower stress levels or just add a striking new feature to your decor, here are some important reasons to add a beautiful plant wall to your indoor space Increase curb appeal. An outdoor plant wall is an attractive feature for buyers if you’re planning to sell your home. It can also create interest indoors by boosting your home’s resale value and curb appeal. Break up a white wall. Beautiful greenery and colorful flowers add texture and visual interest to a bland and boring white wall. Use your green wall to enhance a living room or den so it helps to visually “break up” the space. Create living art. Having a variety of plants is a wonderful way to create your very own living work of art. As the plants grow and change, your art will change to create a unique accent piece in your home. Add a garden without losing floor space. Designing a vertical garden gives you the opportunity to enjoy gardening without taking up too much floor space. This can be especially beneficial if you live in a small home, condo, or apartment and want to reap the benefits of gardening without taking up too much precious room. Create a space for calm. Your green wall will give you a peaceful vibe that promotes feelings of calm. Use your green wall to enjoy the benefits of plants and nature inside and make this part of your home a space for calmness, meditation, and reflection. Add an accent wall A feature wall or accent wall can give any room a fun touch. Use your green wall to create a cool accent wall that’s sure to be a conversation starter whenever you have guests over. Add life to your home Plants will add vibrancy and life to your home that standard wall art simply can’t replicate. If you live in a place where you can’t have pets, a living wall is a wonderful way to care for another living thing as you watch it flourish and grow. As you can see, building a plant wall has a wide range of benefits not just for your home, but also for your health and wellbeing. Plants clean the air, add beauty, and promote feelings of rest and calm in the home. With a living green wall, you can cultivate your connection with nature while enjoying a new and beneficial hobby that will enhance your life.

MAKE YOUR HEAT PUMP WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER

Tips and guidance on ways to make sure your heat pump is working as smartly as possible. The days are darker, it's getting colder, and the temptation to run the heat pump at full blast might be growing. After all, they're a low-cost and efficient way to heat your home. Tempting though it might be, blasting your heat pump will add to the numbers on your electricity bill, but it also adds to your carbon footprint. HERE'S HOW TO RUN YOUR HEAT PUMP — THE SMART WAY

MAKE SURE IT’S CLEAN Just like cleaning the filter in your dishwasher or washing machine can help it run more efficiently, cleaning the filter inside your heat pump can make a real difference to how well it works. You should give your filter a good clean as we head into the cold season, and ideally clean your heat pump filters once a month during winter. You can always clean them more frequently if they’re particularly dirty. SPEND MORE TIME ON YOUR COUCH It might sound obvious, but heat pumps use the most energy when they’re getting a room up to a set temperature. So spending more time in the space your heat pump is in will help you make the most of the energy you’re using. Often, that’s in the living room, which is also conveniently where our couches, TVs, and magazines live. You can close the doors to any rooms you don’t use too, to make sure they’re not stealing some of the warmth.

56

Fennec Home

KNOW YOUR TEMPERATURES How do you get a warm, dry home without churning through power? There is a middle point that'll help you with both. Set your heat pump temperature to 18 degrees or above to help fight damp and mould, but below 21 degrees to save on power. The higher the temperature, the more energy the heat pump will use, so anywhere between 18 and 21 is the sweet spot.

DON’T RUN YOUR HEAT PUMP CONSTANTLY A lot of people believe that keeping a heat pump running 24/7 is an efficient, costeffective way to heat their home. But in fact, that idea is actually a myth. When you do that, you’re actually using more energy and losing more energy overall, so it’s much better to just run your heat pump when you’re at home. Doing that will also save you money on your electricity bill.

GOT A TIMER? USE IT If your heat pump has a timer, you can set it to turn on just before you get home or before you wake up in the morning. Doing that also means you’ll be less tempted to crank the heat pump at a high temperature when you get home to a cold house, or wake up in one.

What’s the state of your switchboard? We have been in Kiwi homes for over 80 years with connected and reliable electrical solutions. Our innovative products are made to keep what’s important to you safe and sound. If you’re thinking about renovating, let an electrician have a look at your switchboard to check if it’s up to scratch before you begin. You can rely on us to continue to create clever electrical products that help New Zealand homes become smarter and safer. Ask your electrician for PDL.

pdl.co.nz/safety

5 electrical safety tips for your renovation project 1. Get an electrician involved early in the process. They can come out and check your switchboard and wiring to ensure it is in good condition and can handle your renovation plans. This will mean you can budget for any electrical safety upgrades you need, avoiding surprises down the track. 2. Check the leads on your electrical appliances, multi boxes and extension cords to ensure they are in good condition before you use them. If you can see exposed wires i.e. red, black and green wires in your power cords, they will need to be repaired or replaced. 3. Take a walk around your home and make a note of any broken or damaged electrical switches or power outlets that you need to be checked or replaced by an electrician. Consider all the electrical pain points you have around the home, such as not having enough power outlets, light switches in the wrong places and replacing old discoloured switches.

4. Don’t forget about lighting. Using lighting on sensors means lights can turn on automatically for a set duration of time. This is great for lighting up front entrances, driveways, or even areas like sculleries and laundries where you often have your hands full. Plus, you don’t have to remember to turn the lights off. 5. Ask for ideas or solutions from the experts. New safety technology such as Arc Fault Detection Devices have only been available in NZ for a couple of years. These can be installed into your switchboard to help prevent the risk of an electric arc fault which could cause a fire. For more information visit pdl.co.nz/safety

WINK Lisa Sinke is the director and designer of Wink – a new design-led homeware company for Kiwi homes. Sinke is an interior designer and lover of travel. After staying in inspiring and unique boutique hotels over the years, she wanted to translate the same atmosphere in her own home. On her journey of finding pieces to fulfil her vision, she fell short in discovering brands and products that fit the bill. “I decided to create my own. Through that process, I discovered that the conventional materials used in the making of bedheads are harmful to the environment, and as I am passionate about the health of our planet, I decided to find a better way of doing it,” explained Sinke. After a long process of research and prototyping, Wink now offers products that align with Sinke’s ethics that she is proud to offer to the New Zealand market. Wink offers custom-made bedheads, cushions, valances and lampshades for Kiwi homes looking for a difference. All their products are made locally while being kind to the planet.

74

Fennec Home

The expert craftspeople at Wink create products to your order, right here in New Zealand. They have developed new methods to eliminate the usual foam, toxic glues, plastics and unsustainable timbers wherever possible. All bedheads are made with sustainable New Zealand wool, screws instead of glues, and super low emission timber board. “You can rest east knowing your Wink product is kind to the environment and isn’t releasing harmful emissions while you sleep.” All feathers used in their cushion inners have been collected ethically and are from New Zealand. Wink lampshades also do not use typical plastic inners, but instead use water-based glues and are handmade locally. Ten years ago, Sinke had a change of direction from being a midwife and working in investment banking in London. She trained in Interior Design and worked for a number of years as an independent designer in the residential, commercial and hospitality sectors. She is best known for her work as the Designer for the Dux Group in Christchurch doing fit outs for Dux Central, Terrace Tavern

and Dux Dine. When designing a product for Sinke, the concept is simple – it must be fit for purpose, look fantastic and be kind on our planet. Wink Bedheads go from Single to Super King, however, the team can easily customize it to any size you may require. Wink’s interactive website showcases their large selection of shapes, fabrics and embellishments. This way each customer can get something individual and custom made. Sinke’s goal for Wink is to become the go to designer led bedroom furniture and accessories brand in New Zealand while having a positive environmental impact. Sinke’s current favourite design, although admittedly hard to choose, is the Juniper Bedhead for its unique design. Seeing a bedhead come together with the perfect mix of gorgeous fabric and beautiful shape, complemented by lovely finishing touches is what Wink is all about. All while being guilt free about the impact it has on the environment! For more information visit www.winkdesign.co.nz.

KEEPING KIWIS WARM AND COSY Third generational farmers Meredith Carpenter, and her husband Andrew run Ruanui Station, a farming station situated in the hills west of Taihape in the North Island of New Zealand. Mount Ruapehu sits as their backdrop and Ruanui is at an altitude of 1800 ft and lies across the volcanic plateau of rich soils, formed centuries ago. Due to the ever-declining wool prices in New Zealand, the duo has been searching for ways to use their wool – especially their lambswool. “Our wool is such an incredible iconic fibre, and in a world of synthetics and the ‘throw-away’ culture we live in now, wool has been forgotten about,” expressed Carpenter. With COVID implications looming, there was a further decline in wool prices. However, this gave Carpenter the time to investigate the different options she could take to use their precious wool. “We decided in March last year to go ahead and produce lambswool throws and baby blankets under than name ‘Ruanui Station’.” Admittedly, both Carpenter and her husband have no previous design experience, however, they do love beautiful quality products that are made in New Zealand. With designing Ruanui Station products, they get the help of Tracy March at Interweave who has a textile background and advises the couple on colours and trends. When designing Ruanui Station products, for Carpenter, it has to be different to what is being offered already. “Our throws have unique designs and colours which people are really embracing.” The brand’s wool is first sourced in Hawkes Bay, then sent to Woolyarns in Lower Hutt to be spun into weaving yarn, and then finally to Auckland to Interweave, where the blankets are woven. “It’s quite a slow and careful process but we are so proud that our product is 100 percent New Zealand made from our paddock to retail.” The brand has started out small to feel its way through the industry, and are not

producing large quantities, which also ensures there is no waste. “We often get feedback from customers that they love the fact our blankets are not like the mass-produced ones you often find, they actually smell of wool!” Ruanui Station not only offer a superior product, the story behind their products and business is what truly makes it special. “We are real farmers that grow the wool and see the process through ourselves.” Something that is becoming sadly more of a rarity these days. “People are loving that connection from the land to the final product, and are increasingly more interested in where goods come from and traceability these days, becoming much more aware of what they are bringing into their homes.” Carpenter plans to expand Ruanui Station by producing other products with their wool. “There is definitely a market to grow! We will continue to sell online as well as stock retailers around New Zealand and around the world.” Carpenter’s greatest goal for Ruanui Station is to see strong wool come back to its former glory. “We are the best producers of wool in the world, we have a premium fibre at our back door and we need it to be in everyone’s everyday life in New Zealand once again.” Ruanui Station throws are visually inspiring. It catches your eye and draws you in, is colourful and soft. Carpenter’s favourite product they make at the moment is definitely the throws. “They look so stunning on a bed or on the back of a couch. They really are a finishing piece and adds a pop of colour and texture to a room.” Carpenter loves meeting many amazing people from around the country through her work, plus, it’s always exciting for her to see their wool being produced into the final product. “Normally our wool is carted off on a truck and never seen again. It’s certainly opening a lot of doors for us.” To support this wonderful local business, visit www.ruanuistation.co.nz.

BRIGHT IDEAS FOR GROWING FAMILIES Growbright is here to make the journey of becoming a new parent that little bit easier, so you can spend more quality time with your baby, and less time trying to figure things out. We had the chance to catch up with Natalie Norman, founder of Growbright, to learn a bit more about the person behind the brand as well as the inspirations and visions she has for Growbright. Norman is a mother of two and lives with her husband and children in the place she grew up – Auckland. She studied firstly, a diploma in fashion as well as a diploma in business at AUT. After her studies, she set foot in the fashion industry at Petrena Millar Design in a role that covered production and design. After Petrena, she decided to work within her family’s manufacturing business in Product Development for consumer goods. Growbright came about after Norman discovered the technology that is now being used in Growbright’s hero product, the airnest mattress. The technology found in the airnest is developed in Japan and it caught Norman’s eye when she was setting up her very own nursery. “I became aware that many of the product standards were not mandatory and that many cot mattresses available also came with risks that parents are not aware of,” explained Norman. Norman wanted to give parents a better and smarter option when it came to setting up the safest sleep environment for

86

Fennec Home

their little ones. There is not necessarily a shortage of information out there for parents to read up on, however, it meant that the information parents were caught up in were often confusing, conflicting and/or opinionated. “It dawned on me that there must be a better, simpler way to get prepared before a baby is born, and to build confidence in everything that comes after. That’s when the concept for Growbright and airnest was born.” Growbright launched a month before Norman’s daughter was born; July 2018, with the airnest mattress being the first product Growbright sold, as well as the first of its kind to the Australasian market. The development of the airnest took around a year. As it was product babies slept safely on, Norman had to make sure that the product stood up to all tests whilst also being able to last for more than one child. It is recommended that each child has a new mattress to lower SIDs risk factors (when it comes to hygiene). “When we held our focus group prelaunch, this was something many parents were unaware of. Because the airnest was so easily washed, you can reuse it for many children, so I also needed to ensure this had been tested to last.” Some other challenges Norman faced when developing the airnest, was creating the accessories to go with it. Some customers would still want a mattress protector for any quick night time

accidents, but the mattress protector would need to be breathable. Norman came across a merino wool quilted fabric that was perfect for the mattress protector. Growbright also launched their Tencel fitted sheet; Tencel being a sustainable fibre that is as soft as silk. Growbright has the safest baby cot mattress on the market, moreover, the brand won silver in the Oh! Baby! Awards this year for their body support pillows. Customers cannot seem to get enough of Growbright’s body support pillows. The Junior Pillow is Norman’s favourite product at the moment. “I love that it’s something that can be used for many years with replacing the inner as you grow. The pillow is 100 percent washable and breathable.” Norman is also obsessed with the fabric used in their sheets, although it has not necessarily been the ‘star of the show’, the sheets feel amazing and are silky soft. The Growbright team is working to expand this range which is really exciting! Growbright is excited to be launching some new ranges next year to stand alongside their existing airnest range. If you want to test the amazing Growbright range for yourself, Growbright has offered an exclusive discount code for our Fennec readers! HAWKES BAY COMPANY TAKES FIRST STEPS TO TACKLE GLOBAL BABY MARKET

88

Fennec Home

Pandora-based sheepskin tannery and retailer, Classic New Zealand, has launched its new Baby by Classic range of sheepskin products. The new collection promotes the benefits of wool for babies to new parent’s across the globe. Made of locally sourced and tanned lambskin, hand finished and packaged in Hawkes Bay, the range presents a traditional, natural and nurturing product in a very practical new way. Highlighted in the range is baby sheepskin rugs for Sleep, Play & Move. All packaged in organic cotton grab-and-go duffle bags, making it easy for mums and dads to take a really familiar and comfortable place for baby with them wherever they go. Complimenting the new range is a continuation of the baby footwear range, including lovingly hand-crafted Crochet Booties which provided the inspiration for the recent Karen Walker X Classic collaboration slipper. "Across the 50 years of operation, we have had to respond to many challenges, and 2020 is no exception," explained Classic New Zealand's general manager, Gavin Foulsham. "We have been working on this range for the last 12 months, with the final piece of the puzzle being our packaging. Ultimately, because of COVID 19, it made sense to manufacture our duffle bags in New Zealand, giving us control over the volume and quantity, while keeping cash in the New Zealand economy." Sheepskin has long been renowned for its nurturing properties for babies, helping maintain a regular temperature and providing calm, familiar surroundings that can aid sleep and wellbeing. "Our research with mums across New Zealand, Australia, the UK and US, confirms

that mums are keen to use natural products with their baby, but when it came to sheepskin, there was some uncertainty around how and when to use the product," added Foulsham. "By outlining the clear purpose of the rug, based on wool length & shape, and then packaging it accordingly, we aim to help mum’s get the most out of their baby rug, whether it is in the cot, on the floor for tummy time or out and about in their buggy." Like most businesses, COVID has challenged Classic, but it also has presented opportunity, such as their recent sell out launch of the Karen Walker slipper. Handmade in Hawkes Bay using Classic sheepskin & locally spun yarn, these slippers were an instant hit with those working from home during Lockdown. "We had been working on our collaboration with Karen Walker for around 18 months, and were ready to launch just as the lockdown hit. Karen had been wearing hers at home and posted on social media as we hit level 3, selling out the first supply in 12 hours, and the second consignment inside an hour so it was a huge success for us, and our timing couldn’t have been better." "We are very optimistic that the Baby by Classic range will also benefit from timing, as Kiwi’s look for local, natural, sustainable products. Being the only 100 percent New Zealand owned, produced and finished baby rugs on the market, we are confident these rugs will find favour, both locally & offshore." The company may also benefit from an increased customer base if the reports of a COVID 19 Baby boom around Christmas time prove to be correct. and safe baby bed Written by, Dimples

Rest easy, here’s what you need to know about safe sleep While images of wee babies – nestled in plush-cushioned mattresses, draped in cute blankets and snuggled up to adorable soft toys – plague the internet, the realities of making a safe baby bed are quite different. Whether you’re still pregnant and setting up a nursery or your bundle has already arrived, worrying about your slumbering babe can keep you up at night.

WHAT IS SUDI? Sadly, sudden unexplained death in infancy (SUDI or SIDS) affects 40 to 60 babies every year in New Zealand, and is largely avoidable using safe sleeping practices. When it comes to making a safe bed, simple is often better. SUDI is when a baby dies in a way that is unexpected and (initially) unexplained. It’s a leading cause of preventable deaths in New Zealand babies, and thankfully one we can take steps to avoid with the right knowledge. SUDI is most common in babies aged between two and four months, so setting up a safe sleeping environment from birth is best. Here’s exactly what you need to know for both you and your baby to rest easy in the first year… HOW DO I MAKE A SAFE BABY BED? Suffocation due to a baby having its face covered is one of the main risk factors for SUDI. Here’s what you can do to keep the risks low but your baby cosy in bed: INVEST IN A SAFE COT Restful sleep begins in the cot, and all cots sold in New Zealand are subject to mandatory safety standards. The cot you buy for your baby should comply with these standards and will carry a label to say so (look for National Standard AS/NZ 2172). Important aspects covered in this standard include a minimum cot depth, specific spacing between bars, securely locking drop-sides and more. View Dimples’ range of cots that meet the National Standard

While it can be tempting (and convenient) to have your baby join you in bed, setting him up in his own cosy and safe sleeping space is best. Keep him close (ideally within your room) for at least the first six months – this makes night feedings easier if you’re breastfeeding and can also help lower the risk of SUDI. GET THE RIGHT MATTRESS A clean, firm, well-fitting mattress will help you and your little one get a good night’s rest. Firm, flat mattresses allow your baby’s airway to remain open when she’s resting on her back, and a mattress that fits securely within the cot means no gaps for your baby to become trapped or wedged in through the night. Aside from this, mattresses that are breathable and easy to clean like the Linea Cot Mattress make for sweet dreams all round. NOW LAYER IT UP Mattress protector – be prepared for spills and leaks by investing in a waterproof layer like this wool mattress protector from Fairydown. When it comes to frequent bedding changes it’s an essential item for keeping the mattress clean and dry. It’s best to stock up on a couple of these to avoid being caught without. Fitted sheet – here’s your chance to inject some cute! You’ll need three or four of these, so choose sweet printed, cotton jersey fitted sheets like this one from Snuggle Hunny, or go for super-soft and snuggly, 100% organic cotton like this one from Dimples. Swaddle or sleeping bag – Soft or bulky

bedding and blankets that can cover a baby’s face or head can be dangerous. Do away with loose blankets and use swaddles or sleeping bags to create safe sleeping for your baby. Swaddles in merino or cotton provide your baby with a cosy and secure layer with no extra blankets needed. Once your little one is ready to move out of a swaddle, seasonal sleeping bags are perfect for all sleeps. Best of all, with no blankets to kick off, he won’t wake from being cold in the night! REST EASY Watch your baby drift into a safe slumber with a video baby monitor like this one from Oricom. Baby monitors have come a long way in giving parents peace of mind, with features like breathing monitors that alert you when breath rate drops below a safe level, through to the Owlet monitor with its ‘Smart Sock’. The Smart Sock tracks both oxygen levels and heart rates and sends these to your smartphone (along with highdefinition video) via its very own app. LESS IS BEST FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S REST Keeping it simple and minimal is the best approach when it comes to making up a safe and cosy bed for your new baby. Those Insta-worthy baby beds aren’t safe or practical when it comes to minimising the risk of SUDI – at least until her first birthday when she becomes more mobile. While it might seem boring, keep your cute factor to the fitted sheets and swaddle or sleeping bag for now, and save the accessories for one year and beyond.
