T
he flourishing accommodation industry is going from strength to strength – new hotels, new lodges and motels, new guest experiences, and welcoming visitors from a growing range of countries. New Zealand has a pretty big name for itself as a place to put on the bucket list so it is important we live up to our name with great fit-outs, improved conference facilities, appealing activities and enticing unique guest experiences. New Zealand has seen an increase in international visitors of 38.8 percent since 2014, and their spend has grown by 54.9 percent in the same time frame. This year has been one of ups and downs for the New Zealand accommodation industry, from increased tourism numbers in some areas being offset by reductions in others. Guests from Australia still top the charts, bed numbers continue to grow with new openings and refurbishments.
The influences of technology on the sector continues, particularly in how guests interact with their accommodation provider, from remote registration, digital concierges, entertainment streaming and personalised minibars incorporating local artisan food and beverage. The innovations keep coming and show no signs of slowing in the coming year. Sustainability remains high on the agenda as hotels and motels reduce, repurpose and recycle. Amenities are now big again, with small sizes being pushed aside in favour of larger refillable options to see a reduction in plastics. Despite this, consumers still want artisan, luxurious, unique products of New Zealand – which has become quite the balancing act. In our last issue of Hotel Magazine, we talked about the importance of creating experiences within your own facilities, expanding on what you already do and doing it well will bring you returning
guests, free social media exposure, and great reviews. Our publishing house is 75 years old this year, and are proudly New Zealand family owned and operated.
