Welcome Constructors

New Mills

This season, we welcomed two new mills and gave them a fresh look in the new colors introduced with our website refresh. Then we turned to the people who know them best for one important job: naming them.

Say hello to The Grindfather and Shred Zeppelin.

A Note From Willard

As we move deeper into the construction season, I want to take a moment to talk about something that remains at the center of everything we do: safety.

The summer months bring longer days, higher temperatures, and increased demands on our crews. Staying safe starts with taking care of yourself and looking out for those around you. Be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, take breaks when needed, and pay attention to the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, fatigue, excessive sweating, and confusion. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or a coworker, speak up and get help immediately.

This summer also brings an added challenge to our region. With Kansas City welcoming visitors from around the world for World Cup events and activities, we can expect heavier traffic and more congestion. Whether you’re traveling between jobsites, commuting to work, or heading home to your family, take the extra time to drive safely. Stay alert, avoid distractions, watch for changing traffic patterns, and give yourself plenty of space on the road.

At Superior Bowen, safety is more than a policy, it’s how we take care of one another. We have each other’s backs, and every safe decision helps ensure that everyone goes home at the end of the day.

Thank you for your commitment to safety, your dedication to quality work, and the role you play in making our jobsites and communities safer.

Legacy Series

If you’ve crossed paths with Superior Bowen in the last three decades, chances are you’ve met Jen or Grant. In this installment of our Legacy Series, we’re celebrating two incredible members of Team SB: Jen and Grant Breuer.

Champions of the Quarter

Every month, we celebrate the individuals and teams who go above and beyond in living our core values. Through the Champions program, we highlight their hard work and dedication. Their commitment inspires all of us to keep building a positive, collaborative work environment. Congratulations to our Champions! Your actions make Team SB every day!

February Champion Barney O’Donnell

“Barney has been a huge part of the Hickman Plant reconstruction. His knowledge of plant operations and years of experience have been invaluable out here. I don’t think this project would get finished on time without his help. He is going to see this project through to the end and make sure every detail is correct. I appreciate his hard work and dedication to this project and this company.”

February Crew

Colby Gray’s Crew

“While milling, Colby’s crew discovered a gas leak and took the steps to resolve it. On their first pass, they smelled gas and began searching for a leak. Although they were only milling 2” and knew they hadn’t hit a line, they continued investigating. Each pass brought a faint smell, and each time they searched but couldn’t find the source. They could have given up, but they didn’t. They eventually found the leak. Great job, crew. Thank you for having each other’s backs and keeping both your team and the public safe.”

March Champion Chet McDaniel

“I need to recognize Chet for stepping up and taking ownership of several yard projects. As our Inventory Manager, he’s gone beyond his role and been a driving force behind getting this work across the finish line. His initiative and follow-through have made a real impact.”

March Crew

Lowboy Team

“I want to recognize my entire crew for the work at the Manchester Yard this year. You’ve consistently gone above and beyond, completing every task ahead of expectations and doing it the right way. Your effort, urgency, and attention to detail haven’t gone unnoticed. You’ve set a high standard for what this team can accomplish. I appreciate the work—keep it going.”

April Champion

Jamie Fosnow

“Jamie has been exceptional in his new role, playing a key role in installing the new sampling device at KCI while also helping coordinate major upgrades across the plant. From relocating and recalibrating the fiber machine to cleaning and re-plumbing AC tanks and addressing issues with the filler silos, he’s kept everything moving on a tight timeline, all while stepping in wherever else he’s needed.”

April Crews Justin H & Colby G

“A bus driver from the Blue Springs School District stop by one of our milling operations to compliment the crew on how well the work zone was moving traffic and maintaining a safe environment. When we thanked her, assuming she meant that day’s work, she made a point to clarify—she said this has been consistent across our jobs in the area.

I want to recognize Justin Heckadon and Colby Gray’s crews for their outstanding work in Independence and Blue Springs. The consistency in safety, traffic control, and quality does not go unnoticed!”

QUARTER CHAMPIONS

May Champion Mike Huffmaster

“Mike called me when the team ran into two separate issues on site. When I arrived, everything was under control. The inspectors had nothing but positive things to say about Mike - how professional he is and how smoothly his job sites operate. Thank you, Mike, for respecting our relationships, handling the situation professionally, and doing all the right things.”

BuildHER Recap

Women Leading The Way

Superior Bowen recently welcomed industry professionals for our Q2 BuildHER event, featuring a panel of accomplished women leaders from across construction, engineering, operations, and business leadership. The discussion was moderated by Callie Starks, who guided a thoughtful conversation on leadership, growth, and the future of the industry.

Designed by women, for women, BuildHER offers educational sessions, networking opportunities, career development resources, and programs that encourage and support women within Superior Bowen and throughout the construction industry.

Panelists Tara Edwards (Fleet Fuels), Michelle Kaiser (MIKA Project Partners), Ann Konecny (Foley Equipment), Susan Schaefer (JE Dunn Construction), and Laura Terrebonne (BHC) shared insights on leadership, career growth, and the opportunities shaping the future of our industry.

One theme echoed throughout the discussion: the future of construction is bright. From significant growth across the Kansas City region to increasing representation of women in leadership roles, the panel highlighted the momentum driving our industry forward. Conversations focused on the importance of being intentional in career development, understanding the value of diverse perspectives at the leadership table, and striving to be the best at what you do.

Thank you to our panelists and attendees for helping create meaningful dialogue around the future of construction. Events like BuildHER continue to strengthen connections, foster professional growth, and support the next generation of industry leaders.

Hickman Plant

Our new Hickman Plant is up and running! With six silos, dual load-out scales, and increased production capacity, this facility is built to better serve our crews and customers for years to come. The silos are getting their final coat of paint, putting the finishing touches on a plant that’s already delivering asphalt and supporting projects across the region.

Learning Teams

We need you!

The idea is simple — make sure the best ideas don’t just stay where they’re found, but shape how we work across the entire company. We’ve already completed teams on underground utility hits and overhead strikes, and the work those teams did is a great example of what this program is meant to be: people closest to the work helping us all get better.

Here’s how to know if something is a good candidate for a Learning Team: if it feels...

Dumb - What doesn’t make sense?

Dangerous - What feels risky?

Difficult - What process is hard to follow?

Different - From job-to-job or crew-to-crew

...that’s worth a conversation. Those are the moments where we have the most to learn, and where your perspective matters most. If something in your day-to-day fits one of those four Ds, speak up. We want to hear from you! Submit Your Ideas Here

Project Highlight

Blue Springs Overlay | Blue Springs, MO

Superior Bowen is improving neighborhood infrastructure across Blue Springs with roadway upgrades designed to perform for years to come.

Across Blue Springs, Missouri, Superior Bowen crews are working to improve neighborhood roadways as part of the City of Blue Springs 2026 Neighborhood Street Preservation Program. Construction began in April and will continue through November, with crews performing pavement preservation and reconstruction work designed to extend the life of the city’s street network.

Superior Bowen was hired to mill existing pavement and place two inches of new surface asphalt throughout the program area. Additional work includes curb replacement by Lan-Tel, asphalt patching, full-depth pavement

replacement, subgrade repair, and reconstruction of select streets requiring more extensive rehabilitation. Once complete, the project will provide residents with smoother, longer-lasting roadways while improving the overall condition of neighborhood infrastructure.

The scale of the work is significant. The project includes approximately 97,851 tons of surface asphalt, 831,684 square yards of milling, and the full reconstruction of 14 streets. Delivering that volume of work requires careful coordination between multiple departments, including SiteWorks, Paving, Asphalt Production, Lab Testing and

Analysis, and more.

One of the project’s biggest challenges has been the condition of the existing pavement. Many streets have required substantial patching and repair work before paving operations can begin. Project requirements call for hot joints and require streets to be paved within three days of milling. To meet those requirements, crews have adjusted paving operations in residential areas by making shorter pulls and utilizing full street closures approved by the city, allowing both lanes to be tied together efficiently while maintaining quality standards.

Maintaining the three-day milling-to-paving window has required close coordination between operations. Because milling production often takes longer than paving, crews continuously adjust schedules and sequencing to keep work progressing while ensuring paving operations remain productive. Through detailed planning and communication, the team continues to navigate these challenges while keeping the project on track.

As work continues through the construction season, the focus stays on delivering quality pavement, maintaining schedule commitments, and providing Blue Springs residents with infrastructure built to perform for years to come.
