HOW TO REGISTER Online and In-Person Registration Students can register for non-credit courses through the first day of class.

Online Registration: Students can submit their non-credit registration requests via our web site: www.sunysccc.edu/wfdce any time of the day or night.

In-person Registration: Students can register in-person at the Registrar’s Office, Elston Hall, 212 and 215, during regular College hours. For information, please call (518) 381-1348.

Payment for non-credit courses is expected at the time of registration. Students may pay in person by visiting the Student Business Office, located in Elston Hall, 219 or via our web site, http://sunysccc.edu/Admissions/Paying-for-College/Student-Business-Office.

If a student plans on withdrawing from or is not able to attend a non-credit course, they must contact the Office of Workforce Development and Community Education at (518) 595-1101, ext. 3 prior to the course start date; otherwise the student will be charged for this course.

Workforce Development and Community Education Refund and Cancellation Policy 1. Courses may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. A 100% refund will be made for any course cancelled by SUNY SCCC. Every effort will be made to contact students prior to the start date so please make sure we have correct contact information.

2. A full refund will be made if withdrawal is made PRIOR to the first class meeting.

Certificate of Proficiency in Archaeology The SUNY SCCC-Community Archaeology Program (CAP) offers a non-credit Certificate of Proficiency in Archaeology. Students 16 and older may enroll in individual courses or complete six required courses plus experience (see chart below). Those who have completed this certificate are eligible to obtain a non-credit Certificate of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology. These certificates provide students an educational opportunity through classroom instruction and experience to learn about regional archaeology and acquire the knowledge and skills needed in order to pursue archaeology under professional supervision. Lectures, readings, discussions, field trips and hands-on activities are among the teaching methods employed in all courses

This course is mandatory for students fulfilling the 60 experience hours required for the SUNY SCCC-Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate.

Additionally, this course is required for all students engaged in archaeological research and laboratory under a SUNY SCCC-CAP instructor’s supervision. This course is taught by Louise Basa and Diana Carter. Ms. Basa, an area archaeologist with extensive fieldwork experience and research experience, is past president of the NYS Archaeological Association. Ms. Carter, a GE retiree, began her second career in archaeology after earning the basic certificate from SUNY SCCC.

INTRO TO GENEALOGY CRN# 60469 CFP 120-51

Field trip scheduled for Saturday, July 15, from 10-11 a.m.

This course will cover the basics of genealogy, including record-keeping, practice and archiving rules. Students will learn the variety of local repositories and the sources they offer such as census records, city directories, church records, probate and other records. Students will also learn about the wide variety of sources available on the Internet. In addition, the class will take a field trip on Saturday, July 15, to the Schenectady County Historical Society to learn about their library and archival collections. This course is taught by Michael Maloney, the librarian and archivist at the Schenectady County Historical Society, where he enjoys assisting researchers with genealogy, researching and writing blog posts for the library’s blog, organizing the library’s collections and planning programs to promote Schenectady’s rich history.

CARING FOR YOUR COLLECTION CRN# 60375 CFP 119-51

This course will provide students with valuable information and guidance to protect family heirlooms, collections and keepsakes so that family members can enjoy the memories and historical association of the collections. Instructional information and demonstrations will focus around the preservation and minor cleaning and/or repair of a variety of items such as coin collections, glass and ceramic knick-knacks, toys and games and just about anything that can be passed on to family members or future generations. This course is taught by Darrell Pinckney, a member of the American Institute of Conservation for Art and Antiquities.

HANDS-ON ARCHAEOLOGY FOR ADULTS CRN# 60263 CFP 111-01

Archaeology is more than digging. Students in this course will explore all aspects of archaeology: planning, excavation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of results through class presentations and hands-on activities under the supervision of SUNY SCCC’s Community Archaeology Program instructor(s). Activities include document study, field survey, digging techniques, artifact identification and other lab analyses. Course options will include field trips and research at local sites within the Stockade and the Capital Region. Opportunities for continued involvement in any or all aspects of archaeology will be presented. This course is taught by Louise Basa, an area archaeologist with extensive fieldwork experience and research experience. Ms. Basa is past president of the NYS Archaeological Association.

ARCHAEOLOGY OF HUMAN BURIALS CRN# 60521 CFP 125-71

Fee: $175

Students will learn about the advent of burials with our Homo ancestors in Eurasia, indigenous practices globally and how the death obsession of the Victorians came to shape how we view burial today. This course is taught by Hanna Marie Pageau, a graduate student with field experience in osteology and material archaeology. Her research focuses on dental evolution and the efficacy of field school participation by students.

Students, ages 6-13 years, will have an opportunity to take introductory level riding lessons that allow them to bond with their horse and focus on proper technique and safety. Riders are grouped according to riding ability with no experience necessary. Students are asked to wear boots or shoes with a heel, appropriate riding attire such as jeans or comfortable pants and no loose clothing. Riding helmets will be provided to all students but students are also welcome to bring their own. Students will ride in one of the Capital District’s largest indoor arenas - the New Horizons Stables, located at 586 Pearse Road in Schenectady. Don’t miss this opportunity – class size is limited.

Students, ages 6-17, will learn proper singing techniques and vocal independence through solo work. Instruction will consist of five, half-hour individual lessons. This course is taught by Peter Waite, an alumnus of the SUNY SCCC School of Music. Mr. Waite is currently the Choral Director at Mekeel Christian Academy and Piano/Voice/Composition Instructor at the Performance School of the Arts. He has an active private lesson studio instructing on composition, music theory and vocal/piano instruction to students of all ages.

In this sewing class, students ages 9-14 years, will learn the basics of sewing and how to use their sewing machine. Using step-by-step instructions, students will make a tote bag with a matching zippered pouch. They will learn the basic construction, how to sew a straight stitch, how to cut and measure and how to sew a zipper. This is a beginner class for those with little to no sewing machine experience. All supplies are included in the tuition. Students must bring their own sewing machines. Sewing machines can be provided at no additional cost but must be requested ahead of time by contacting the instructor at fatima@fab518.com. Students will have an opportunity to show off their creation on the last day of class. This course is taught by Fatima Bey, who has been sewing and crocheting since she was 10 years old. She was the Alterations Manager at David’s Bridal for 10 years and teaches sewing classes at Jo-ann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, Albany High School and HVCC.

This class is a young person’s ticket to the world of veterinary medicine. Young vets, ages 9-14, will have an opportunity to look into the exciting careers of real veterinarians and allow them to be involved in related hands-on activities and experiments.

Each student will receive his or her own medical kit. Sample topics include animal behavior, DNA extraction, clinical procedure, diseases and parasites, First Aid, dental care and much more. This course is taught by Club Scientific.

Using LEGO® bricks, students ages 6-10 years will be introduced to robotics. They will be able to build LEGO® models featuring working motors and sensors, program their models and explore theme-based activities. This summer, students ages 6-14 will learn to sing solos and perform group scenes from popular and historic musical theater productions. Students will learn to perform popular musical theater songs and study staging, characterization, healthy vocal technique and harmonization as well as develop a familiarity with musical theater repertoire. This course will end with a performance for friends and family. This course is taught by Christina Pickreign, who holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University at Albany and a Master’s degree in Music Education from Westminster Choir College. She has performed numerous times as a soloist and in music theater productions throughout the Capital District. Ms. Pickreign is an Adjunct in the SUNY SCCC School of Music.

BECOMING A YOUNG AVIATOR

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

July 10 – July 15 Monday - Friday

Students, ages 8-12 years, will spend the week at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at the Schenectady County Airport in Glenville, learning about aviation and what real pilots do on the ground and in the air. Students in this hands-on class will learn about the history of aviation and aircraft design, the forces of flight – how airplanes fly (thrust, lift, drag and flight control), use a flight simulator, make and launch stick rockets and have an opportunity to interact with guest speakers such as a Naval Aviator. Students will also have a guided tour of the museum’s incredible exhibits and airpark, which features more than 20 historic military aircraft. Students will be able to get into the cockpits of some of these legendary fighter and attack aircraft. Students will also have the opportunity to work with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 602 to become Junior EAA members, which includes a half-hour flight. In case of weather issues, Saturday, July 15 will be an alternate flight day. This course will be taught by the Empire State Aerosciences Museum.

Students, ages 13-16 years, will spend the week at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at the Schenectady County Airport in Glenville, learning about aviation, what real pilots do, and careers in aviation. PROFESSIONAL BAKING FOR KIDS July 10 – July 13 Monday - Thursday

The course will focus on measurement, correct sanitation, and mixing methods.

Young chefs, ages 10-13, will learn to make such delicacies as marshmallows, fudge brownies with fudge frosting, croissants, apple pie, chocolate cheesecake, dinner rolls by hand, and chocolate zucchini cake. Young chefs are asked to bring an apron, closed toed shoes, a water bottle and a bagged lunch. This course is taught by Chef Gail Sokol, a chef educator and guest chef, who has spoken across the country. Chef Gail starred in the kids’ cooking series “Feed Your Brain with Chef Gail Sokol,” a project of Time Warner Cable airing in upstate New York. She regularly appears on television and radio discussing healthy cooking and baking.

She is an Adjunct teaching Baking, Nutrition, and Sanitation for the Culinary Arts program at SUNY SCCC and an Adjunct in the Nutrition Department at The Sage Colleges, teaching food science.

HANDS-ON ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS CRN# 60261 CFP 314-01

July 10 – July 14 Monday - Friday

Young archaeologists, ages 9-13, will have the opportunity to participate in an actual excavation at a site in Schenectady’s Historic Stockade District. They will learn the methods and skills used by archaeologists, with an emphasis on observation and deductive reasoning. Activities include defining research goals, survey, excavation, data and artifact recording, artifact identification and analysis and presenting results. Family and friends are invited on Friday afternoon to see the student’s presentations on the artifacts found at their excavation site.

Students are asked to wear closed toed shoes with socks, and bring a bagged lunch and a water bottle. Students should also wear sunscreen while working outside. This course is taught by Louise Basa and Diana Carter. Ms. Basa, an area archaeologist with extensive fieldwork experience and research experience, is past president of the NYS Archaeological Association. This course is designed to encourage children ages 8-13 to think creatively and to problem solve. Each day the students will be challenged to construct a chosen project with a limited supply of materials and certain guidelines that need to be followed. These challenges are similar to the popular Egg Drop Challenge. There will be a different challenge each day designed to strengthen inventiveness, analytical thinking and motor skills and to encourage peer collaboration. This class is taught by Sue Smith, a Teaching Assistant at Guilderland Central High School with years of art and crafts experience. She has taught children’s art courses at SUNY SCCC over the last seven years.

Students ages 6-14 will work on projection, stage presence, knowledge of the theater, confidence in front of others, character development and improvisational skills. The class will end with a short presentation of scenes performed by students.

This course is taught by Christina Pickreign, who holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University at Albany and Master’s degree in Music Education from Westminster Choir College. In this sewing class students, ages 9-14 years, will get to choose what projects they want to work on. Projects include a drawstring bag, a basic A-line elastic waist skirt, a pocket pillow, basic summer shorts with elastic waist, a tool pouch, apron, water bottle holder with strap, spaghetti strap tank shirt or dress, or pillowcase. Students will make as many or as few of these projects as they choose within the week. Students must already know how to sew a straight stitch on a sewing machines. Pre-requisite: Kids Sewing 101 or equivalent. All supplies are included in the tuition. Students must bring their own sewing machines.

Do you love to act and sing? Have you ever wondered what it is like to be in a musical production? In this course, students ages 8-14 will learn the basic techniques of acting, stage presence, proper singing techniques and vocal independence, and understanding of the theater. As they audition for roles, work on costumes/sets, and rehearse the selected musical, students will build selfconfidence, cooperation, leadership and teamwork skills. The course will end on August 11 with a performance of the musical play presented by the class. This course is taught by Christina Pickreign, who holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University at Albany and a Master’s degree in Music Education from Westminster Choir College. This certificate program is offered in conjunction with the Schenectady ARC and Cornell Cooperative Extension and is appropriate for diverse populations, including senior citizens and individuals with developmental disabilities who are interested in hands-on training in the horticulture field who would like to obtain employment in a garden center, farm stand or greenhouse. Topics covered include basic botany; care of annuals, perennials and vegetable crops; and weed identifications. Participants will gain experience in customer service, working and learning in a greenhouse as well as a variety of outdoor garden settings. Classes will be held at the Sustainable Living Center at Central Park in Schenectady and the Schenectady ARC’s Maple Ridge Horticulture Center in Rotterdam.

This course provides a basic understanding of brewing skills, working in a manufacturing environment, safety and microbiology. Major topics covered include: brewing science, beer maturation and storage, beer processing and packaging, quality and process control, plant safety and sanitation, malting, mashing, brewing, fermentation and finishing. This course will consist of 60 percent classroom lecture and 40 percent lab training in the classroom and at regional breweries.

In addition to directed studies, students will enhance their brewing knowledge through assigned reading and writing exercises and visits to local breweries.

The goal of this course is to provide a pool of trained, entry level brewers in the growing craft beer industry. This course is developed and overseen by regional breweries.

This course uses online and in-person instruction to teach students how to program in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the three tools comprising the development of virtually every site on the web. The course is structured around tutorials, assignments, and individual and group projects wherein students also have the opportunity to learn and practice with industry-standard Front-End technologies including, but not limited to, the Twitter Bootstrap design framework, the jQuery JavaScript library, and the Git version control system. Additionally, guest lectures and networking events are integrated into the curriculum to provide students with valuable real-world exposure to local employers and a chance to get a feel for the industry overall. This course may be of particular interest to graphic designers, as it teaches the technical skills necessary for UI (user interface) development and wire-framing. The course may also be attractive to beginning programmers with aspirations to create mobile applications, as it establishes a solid conceptual foundation for eventual progression into Full-Stack Development.

What is Logistics Training?

• Storage and distribution workers are engaged in storing and distributing materials and products for shipment.

• Workers move freight, stock, and other materials to and from storage or production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, or containers, by hand or using special moving equipment.

• Storage and Distribution Workers are responsible for getting goods, services, and people where they need to go, when they need to be there, and in the right quantity.

Storage and Distribution workers who study logistics can work in the industries such as production sites, warehouses, distribution centers, grocery stores, transportation and moving companies and more. Typical entry-level positions include material handling workers, movers, order processors, packers and packagers and material moving equipment operators.

HEALTH CAREER OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (HCOP) The following courses are supported by a grant for those who qualify: Health Career Opportunity Program (HCOP) for Paraprofessionals: Home Health Aide, Personal Care Assistant Upgrade to Home Health Aide, and Community Health Worker. The Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG 2.0) provides funding to support our communities with healthcare training and education for a variety of healthcare professions. The Upstate Partnership for Healthcare Pathways (UPHP) received funds to provide FREE training for qualifying individuals and is a partnership between: • Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) – Lead Agency • Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP) • Fulton-Montgomery Community College • Schenectady Community Action Program (SCAP) • SUNY Adirondack All eligible participants must go through an intake process by a Community Action Partner (ACAP or SCAP). The grant is part of a national study and applicants will be selected by lottery. Not all eligible applicants will be selected to participate in this opportunity. CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE (CNA) CFE 007

PROFESSIONAL/CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The Certified Nurse Aide program prepares students to take the written and practical skill exam to obtain the New York State Nurse Aide Certification. A Certified Nurse Aide performs delegated tasks involving personal care of residents of long-term care skilled nursing facilities. The majority of CNAs are employed at geriatric nursing facilities; however CNAs are also in demand for work with pediatric and developmentally disabled residents. The SUNY SCCC Allied Health CNA course has a minimum of 90 classroom hours and a minimum of 30 hours of rotations in clinical sites. Included in the training is an additional 40 hours of Personal Care Aide (PCA) training for those who might prefer to work in home settings. The CNA/PCA course lasts approximately 8 weeks and, to ensure success, it provides more than the required number of classroom and lab hours. Classes are held at our Albany as well as our Schenectady sites. Applicants will need to have a High School Diploma or equivalency, supply required medical information and have no criminal background. HOME HEALTH AIDE (HHA) CFE 014

This training covers material for both Personal Care Assistant (PCA) and Home Health Aide (HHA). It provides students with the foundation of working in a home setting and providing care ranging from personal care to the elderly, disabled and infants to taking vital signs. A Home Health Aide (HHA) has a scope of care services wider and more advanced than a PCA. Several times a year, we offer this standalone 4 week, 75-hour training, in addition to 8 hours clinical rotations in a home care or assisted living setting. Labor market analysis projects growing demand and high need in home care professionals in the near future.

Classes are held at our Albany as well as our Schenectady sites. This course is ideally suited to those wishing to work with residents in their homes. It is two weeks long and covers the required 35 hours of classroom and clinical lab as well as the 8 hours clinical experience in an assisted living facility setting. COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS CFE 020

Community Health Workers (CHW) are a vital link to promoting health and wellness throughout communities and to lowering health care costs. Certified Community Health Workers act as part of a team within public-health, hospital, social-service and other community support organizations to promote health and wellness, provide support and services as directed by the organization through outreach, education, referral and follow-ups, case management, advocacy and home-visiting services. Prior experience in the field of healthcare (CNA, HHA, EMT) or medical science OR prior experience in community engagement either as paid or volunteer as demonstrated by confirmation by the sponsoring organization is required. After preliminary intake there will be a selection interview. The certification can be obtained after successful completion of 96 hours of classroom training and 108 hours of internship with area hospitals, medical centers, and other healthcare or community organizations. Classes are held in the evening to accommodate student workers and will take place in the Fall Semester in Albany at 112 State Street, with internships beginning on or about January of the following year and in the Spring Semester in Schenectady at Center City with internships staring in late May of each year.
