PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of SUNY Schenectady County Community College (SUNY Schenectady). I am most fortunate to serve as president of the College at this time, as the anniversary gives me yet another opportunity to share my pride for this institution, which stands as an enduring anchor institution and as a gateway of opportunity for thousands of students and community members.

SUNY Schenectady has transformed the lives of more than 21,000 alumni and impacted thousands of others through its educational, cultural, and community outreach programs and events. Today, we are privileged to educate thousands more students who strive to make their lives better, and they come to us from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

I am very confident that in the years to come we will not only further SUNY Schenectady as an economic engine in the County and Region, but also inspire thousands of talented students who are coming of age who perhaps don’t view a college education as attainable. Thank you for walking this journey with us.

ACADEMICS New Academic Programs Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate CHWs serve as liaisons between health care/social services and the community through outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy. Students learn how to apply best practices for healthcare literacy, and promotion, appropriate strategies in working with culturally diverse populations, and skills required to effectively facilitate and manage healthcare.

Direct Support Professional (DSP) Certificate Direct-care workers provide an estimated 70 to 80 percent of the paid, hands-on long-term care and personal assistance received

by Americans who are elderly or living with disabilities or other chronic conditions. Students analyze the impact of social policies on individuals and systems and apply major social work theories, identifying cultural barriers to societal integration, taking courses in biology, sociology, human services, and psychology.

Mobile Food Service Certificate The College’s colorful new Mobile Food Service Classroom (food truck) is a classroom on wheels, as students gain the knowledge and skills to work in and/or operate a mobile food service operation. Students put their craft to the test in the state-of-the-art food truck, working at events around the Capital Region. It is equipped with a sandwich/salad station, reach-in refrigerator and freezer, double fryer, six-burner stove with convection oven, double conveyor pizza oven, char broiler, griddle, three bay sink, and a hand sink.

Programming for Game Development A.S. Degree The computer gaming industry is booming and through this new academic program, students have the opportunity to begin their education in the Electric City on the path to employment in this ever-expanding industry. They take courses to design and code websites, learn programming languages, and develop an electronic portfolio of game design elements, in addition to taking courses in math, business, science, and the humanities. Students can also transfer seamlessly into the B.S. degree program in Interactive Media and Game Design at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) through a new transfer agreement.

College Joins SUNY’s Guided Pathways SUNY Schenectady joined 16 other SUNY campuses participating in Guided Pathways, aimed at improving student success outcomes by building capacity and implementing supportive pathways, right from the start, to help students persist in college and graduate ready for New York State’s growing career opportunities.

Sharing Original Research During STEM Day From biofilm formations on household items to the effects of hemp oil on bacteria growth, science students conducted original research on a variety of topics and shared their findings during STEM DAY 2019.

They fielded questions from science faculty and students, explaining their methods and how they substantiated their findings.

PRESIDENTIAL MOMENTS A Journey Honored Dr. Steady Moono, College President, was one of the honorees during The Immigrants’ Ball: Celebrating the American Dream at Proctors, which highlighted “the inspiring diversity of the Capital Region, honoring contemporaries who have landed on our shores, adding their voices, their hopes Dr. Moono and his wife Kelly with Joan Dembinski ’10. and their skills to make our country and our society even stronger.” Dr. Moono often shares his story of emigrating from Zambia, in Southern Africa, to the U.S. in 1981 to pursue an education. Those honored represented Nigeria, India, South Korea, Turkey, Italy, Pakistan, Cuba, Ireland, Greece, Haiti, Zambia, Indonesia, Trinidad, Mexico, and Guyana.

Fostering Hope Through Habitat for Humanity

President Moono and members of his leadership team rolled up their sleeves and joined Dr. David Harris, President of Union College (pictured with Dr. Moono), and his team during the first Leadership Build Day. They worked on a home at 2026 Oaklawn Ave. in Rotterdam for Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County (HFHSC).

The group delivered gallons of milk, loaves of bread, and yogurt to the Family Life Center (Women and Children’s Shelter) of City Mission of Schenectady. Dr. Moono accepted the challenge from Union College President David R. Harris.

COLLEGE NEWS Celebrating A Milestone In July 1966, a 50-member Community College Study Committee, comprised of local citizens, recommended to the members of the Education Committee and the Schenectady County Board of Representatives that a community college be established in Schenectady County, stating that “the most important benefit brought by a college of this nature is the greater opportunity for education for both young and old throughout all sections and strata of the community.”

On September 17, 1969, Schenectady County Community College opened its doors to the public, welcoming students who were ready to take the next steps in their education.

Fifty years later, on September 17, 2019, SUNY Schenectady officially kicked off its 50th anniversary!

The College is celebrating with a variety of community events highlighting our five academic divisions, and laying the groundwork for the next 50 years, including our vision to be the regional leader in supporting and expanding innovative and collaborative programs that transform our students and communities.

College Earns Middle States Reaccreditation The College earned full reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education until 2027, which is the maximum term, with no findings or follow-up reports. This followed completion of a comprehensive Self-Study by working groups on campus, under the direction of Eileen Abrahams, Professor in the Division of Liberal Arts, and Brett Wery, Dean of the School of Music, which examined ways in which SUNY Schenectady met the Middle States Commission on Higher Education Standards of Accreditation. An External Review Team then visited campus in March 2019 to meet with a cross-section of the College community, delivering a positive report at the conclusion of their visit.

New Food Truck: An Innovative Teaching Tool

During a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Mobile Food Service Classroom, Dr. David Brough, Dean of the School of Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism, explained how the equipment in the food truck has a distinct advantage for students saying, “Our new Mobile Food Service Classroom on wheels has a variety of equipment that will enable our students to learn how to prepare different cuisine on any given day so that they can take that versatility with them into the industry.”

Building a Future Hub for Learning

A new Learning Commons, one of the largest capital projects in the College’s history, will completely rebuild the interior the Begley Building. The new Learning Commons will occupy approximately 30,000 square feet of space to enhance support services and expand academic resources for students through centralized math, writing, accounting, and other academic support areas; the Center for Excellence in Teaching; study rooms; student collaborative spaces; a Career Center; IT support; a reading area; café; and library stacks. Funding for the $10.1 million renovation project is provided by Schenectady County, through one of the largest single financial commitments the County has ever made, and the State of New York.

The College’s library has been temporarily moved to Elston Hall, Rooms 130 and 132 while this project is underway.

Fai buon viaggio!

Culinary Arts students and faculty chefs from the School of Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism traveled to Italy for 17 days of cooking classes, culinary excursions, and cultural awareness, learning from chefs and touring restaurants, farms, and vineyards in Nettuno, Parma, Ferrara, and Asti, part of the Marco Polo Institute Program Abroad in Italy.

The College was named a 2019-2020 @MilitaryFriendlyÂŽ Silver Award recipient by G.I. Jobs magazine.

Campus Renewal Projects

1. An inviting new fountain, surrounded by flowers and creative landscaping, adds to the welcoming atmosphere of the Campus Quad and was made possible through a landscape improvement grant from the Carlilian Foundation and matching funds from New York State.

2. New external building signage and 50th anniversary banners greet visitors to campus.

3. With the College Foundation’s support matched by New York state, a comprehensive wayfinding project, with new signage, was completed and provides clear directions to individuals navigating campus buildings and offices, supporting student access and enhancing campus navigation.

4. New concrete stairs and an attractive block retaining wall were constructed to the entrance way of the Gateway Building.

COLLEGE NEWS Commencement 2019 The College held its 49th Commencement on May 23, 2019, at Proctors. Congratulations Class of 2019!

1. Keynote Speaker Dion Flynn, SUNY Schenectady alumnus, comedian, and United States Army Veteran, delivered humorous remarks, reflecting on his time as a Drama student at the College.

He went on to earn his B.A. in Theatre from the University at Albany and his M.F.A. in Acting from The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is best known as portraying Barack Obama (and others) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

College Wins Prestigious Gold Paragon Award for Television Commercial The National Council for Marketing & Public Relations presented the College with the prestigious Gold Paragon Award for Television Video/Ad (30-second TV commercial). This year’s awards program drew a total of 1,939 entries from 262 colleges across the country.

The College’s award-winning television ad focuses on empowerment. David Regan White, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, (shown here accepting the award during the NCMPR’s national conference in San Antonio, Texas) worked with Upside Collective who developed the concept and produced the video.

In addition to the Gold Paragon Award, the College also earned a Bronze Paragon Award in the Print Ad Series category for advertisements that featured students and faculty.

A Strong Partner In Our Community “Schenectady ARC’s long-standing collaboration with SUNY Schenectady is a true example of the strength and power that grow when partnerships work,” said Kirk M. Lewis, Schenectady ARC’s Executive Director, presenting Dr. Steady Moono with the organization’s Community Partner Award. “We have worked together to offer The College Success Program that supports individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals to attend college, the Introduction to Horticulture Certificate Program that collaborates with our Schenectady ARC greenhouse program to train people in the skills needed to work in horticulture, the College for Me program that trains students to become Direct Support Professionals and further advance their careers, and through the support of the SUNY Schenectady Office of Workforce Development and Community Education we obtained a grant to provide enhanced trainings to strengthen our employees.”

The College also earned the 2019 Community Partner Award during the Chamber of Schenectady County Annual Business Awards.

“SUNY Schenectady exemplifies what it means to be a community partner,” said Mark Eagan, President and CEO of the Capital Region Chamber. “Our Chamber is honored to recognize their work and commitment. Their role in our community, through academics, partnerships, and apprenticeship programs works in unison with our Chamber as we collectively work to build a better community.”

New Brand and Name for Outreach Center Schenectady College and Career Outreach Center (SCCOC), formerly the SUNY College and Career Counseling Center, announced its new name and brand mark. SCCOC is administered by SUNY Schenectady, and is within the statewide system of 10 Educational Opportunity Centers (EOCs) and a second outreach center in the North Bronx. EOCs and OCs are a part of SUNY University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (SUNYUCAWD). SCCOC prepares academically and economically disadvantaged residents in the Capital District ages 16 and older for further education, training, and employment opportunities.

STUDENT AWARDS/NEWS Science Students Chosen for Prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Awards Two students were honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, recognizing academic excellence and accomplishments in leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvements, or career achievement.

Valerie Lenigk, who graduated in May 2019 with degrees in Mathematics/ Science and Science with a concentration Valerie Lenigk with Dr. Steady Moono, in Biology, was inducted into Phi Theta College President, and Dr. Kristina Kappa Honor Society, named to the Johnson, SUNY Chancellor.

President’s list, and maintained a GPA of 3.86. Valerie was Secretary and President of the Student Government Association and Chair of the Sustainability Committee. She also served as a junior docent mentor and volunteer at the Albany Pine Bush Nature Preserve and a member of the 2nd Albany Regiment Unit and Schuyler’s Company.

Prior to attending SUNY Schenectady, Chandra Williams had already earned her Master of Public Administration from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany, and Chandra Williams B.A. in Political Science from the University at Albany.

She earned her A.S. in Science in December 2018 and transferred to RPI for her B.S. in Biology. Chandra was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists, and maintained a GPA of 3.87. She was the College’s representative at the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference, and is a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Pawsome Pups Preserve Dog Rescue.

Jazz Combo in National Magazine The College’s Jazz Combo 1, directed by Brian Patneaude, earned the DownBeat Community College Jazz Combo Award, part of the magazine’s 42nd Annual Student Music Awards. The group was featured in the international publication, considered the leading jazz music magazine for generations of musicians and fans since 1934. The College’s Jazz Combo won a DownBeat runner-up award in the same category in 2016. They were chosen based on their overall sound, presence, proper interpretation of idiom, improvisation/creativity, technique, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, accurate rhythm, and material.

Dr. Aaron Tolbert, Dean of the Division of Liberal Arts; Cory Bowers, Computer Networking Systems and Cyber Security major, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Member; Dr. Kara Manning, Assistant Professor and PTK Advisor; and Hannah Daignault, Math/Science major and PTK Member, at Catalyst 2019, the international Phi Theta Kappa Convention in Orlando, Fla. This was the first year that SUNY Schenectady was represented at the conference which brings together PTK chapters from all over the country and the world. The College’s chapter was recognized for demonstrating steady advancement.

A Feast for the Eyes and Ears

Students Present on Drones, Computer Guided Life Support Cara Bas and Aselle Ismailova, Computer Science majors, delivered presentations during the New York Celebration of Women In Computing Conference in Lake George. Don Riggs, Associate Professor in the Division of Business, Criminal Justice and Law, facilitated their participation in the conference and also attended.

Cara presented on drones used in safety capacities and Aselle presented on Computer Guided Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Jessica Ramkissoon’s Rhythms of an English Folk Song was among the pieces created by students in Stephen Tyson’s Introduction to Watercolors class on exhibit as part of the Capital Region Wind Ensemble’s Colors performance.

The artists developed a visual analog to the music.

The School of Music Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Dr. Allyson Keyser, was selected to participate in the 44th Annual International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Conference in Miami, Fla., the only group of students from a community college selected to perform.

Bowler Named Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Jenna Lemke, a standout on the Women’s Bowling Team, was a recipient of the 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award. Recipients of this prestigious award have at least a 3.0 GPA and All-Conference athletic honors.

Jenna led the team to an NJCAA National Championship, and had the highest bowling average at 205. In addition to her success as a bowler, Jenna was named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists. She graduated from the College in May 2019 with her degree in Criminal Justice.

PARTNERSHIPS New Transfer Agreements Benefit Students Cazenovia College Graduates of SUNY Schenectady’s associate’s degree program in Teacher Education now have the opportunity to pursue their bachelor’s degrees in Education from Cazenovia College.

What makes this agreement special is that Cazenovia will offer bachelor’s degree courses at SUNY Schenectady’s Center City site, located on State Street in downtown Schenectady.

Performing Arts: Music graduates can now transfer to Castleton University for the B.M. degree program in Music Education with Licensure. Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP), funded by the New York State Department of Education, is a dropout prevention program for at-risk students in grades sixth through 12 who attend Schenectady City schools. LPP transitioned from being an afterschool program to now providing services at schools throughout the day including case management, counseling, social/ emotional support, and programming.

LPP students participated in a STEAM Camp that included activities and experiments about food webs, keystone species, native vs. invasive species, and photosynthesis, with instruction by Faculty Members Dr. Richard Simons and Dr. Lorena Harris, as well as SUNY Schenectady students in the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program.

Earning Their College Degrees While Still in High School

College and Chamber Join Forces on Leadership Program Through a new partnership with the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, College faculty will share their expertise during a firsthand look at the region’s top businesses as part of “Executive Access,” one of the Chamber’s marquee programs. Participants will see how businesses operate day-to-day and learn about how the College is preparing the workforce to rise to these demands.

For the first time, students in the Schenectady Smart Transfer Early College High School were on campus taking courses during the Fall 2019 semester. They have taken courses on campus during the past two summers. Ten students attend SUNY Schenectady in the afternoon, after taking their core courses at Schenectady High School in the morning. College courses including chemistry, statistics, psychology, literature, and history bring them closer to earning their associate’s degrees while they are still in high school. Funded by the New York State Education Department, Smart Transfer is a partnership among SUNY Schenectady, University at Albany, SUNY Delhi, and the Schenectady City School District.

More High School Students Earn College Credits The Smart Scholars Early College High School Program concluded its 10th summer at SUNY Schenectady. When the program began in 2010, 50 students participated in the First Year Experience summer course. This past summer, more than 250 students were on campus enrolled in First Year Seminar, Western Civilization, Psychology, and other general education courses.

Ingrid O’Connell, Professor, School of Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Ingrid O’Connell joined the College as an Adjunct Faculty Member in 1994, and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1997 and Professor in 2000. She uses a variety of teaching techniques in her instruction, and her experience working in the industry contributes to effectiveness with her students. She regularly attends conferences and industry education, is a member of Meeting Professionals International, and maintains important certifications within her field. She has reviewed several textbooks, contributed to a published article, and participated on panels at many conferences. In addition to her dedication inside the classroom, Ingrid has advised the Hospitality Club for 15 years and is assuming leadership of the Meeting Professionals International Club.

Megan Hall, Assistant Professor, Division of Liberal Arts SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities

Megan Hall became a full-time faculty member in 2013. Since that time she has demonstrated remarkable dedication to creative production beyond her normal teaching responsibilities. She has written and published four novels, runs a publishing company with her husband, has illustrated seven published children’s books, and has edited 14 books. She earned the Expanding Your Global Coverage Award from the Southeast Asia Program’s Outreach Office at Cornell University and the Center for Khmer Studies (2014) and the Community Fellows Grant from AmeriCorps (2012). She also revived the Rhythms literary club and developed the “Little Free Library.”

Dr. Syeda Munaim joined the College as a full-time faculty member in 2004. She has served as Chair of the Student Affairs Committee and Professional Policies, Nominations, and Awards, played a key role in developing Biotechnology and Biological Technician programs, as well as a Biology concentration, and has arranged articulation agreements with the University at Albany and SUNY Cobleskill. She has served as the liaison for the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference and between MSTH faculty and Ellis School of Nursing; reviewed books for publishers; and served as a reader and a consultant for AP courses for the College Board. Dr. Munaim also taught Applied Plant Physiology at the Jinling Institute of Technology in China.

Young Artists Gain Inspiration Through Science Stephen Tyson, MFA, Adjunct Faculty Member who teaches Studio Art courses through the Division of Liberal Arts, and Dr. Syeda Munaim, Professor in the Division of Math, Science, Technology and Health, teamed up for the first time to lead “Art Through The Microscope,” a summer youth art workshop for kids ages 7 to 12. Arla JN Wilding has been an Adjunct Faculty Member in the School of Music since 2011. She has taught an array of courses, as well as voice and piano lessons, and accompanies for performances. She was named Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year by the Student Government Association (2016). She is a co-founder and the musical and artistic director of three outstanding extracurricular choral groups: Totally Pitchin’ (a mixed a capella club started in 2014), Out of Time (a barbershop quartet), and Vintage Harmonics (a women’s ensemble).

LuAnn Miller-Meeks joined the Registrar’s team in September 2015 as an Information Processing Specialist II. Since that time, she has demonstrated her commitment to students, faculty, and staff through her efficiency, accuracy, promptness, and customer service, while always keeping student success in mind.

LuAnn’s friendly demeanor, knowledge of her job, and approachability in an office that sees heavy traffic and high stress make her a true asset for the College. She lends her support and expertise to faculty and staff members to explain the complexities of the registration process.

ATHLETICS Women’s Crew Team Competes in NYS Collegiate Rowing Championships

Bowling Coach Honored by Trustees Ray Ross, Head Coach of the Bowling Teams, was honored by the Board of Trustees for his many years of dedication and commitment as he stepped down from the coaching position. Coach Ross, who is a Professor in the Division of Math, Science, Technology and Health, led the Royals for 26 years, guiding the Men’s Bowling Team to eight conference titles, seven Region III titles (six consecutive), and two NJCAA National Championships, with the Women’s Team winning six conference titles, six Region III titles (six consecutive) and four NJCAA National Championships (four consecutive).

Student Athletes Named to Academic All-Region Their hard work as athletes and scholars paid off for students who earned Academic All-Region honors. Students have a 3.50 GPA or better while participating in an intercollegiate sport.

The Women’s Crew Team competed against top colleges and universities during the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga. The Royals were featured in the Women’s Collegiate 4+ event against women’s crews from institutions including West Point, Skidmore College, Ithaca College, Canisius College, Buffalo State College, and St. Lawrence University. The Royals competed in the petite final placing third, placing ninth out of 12 in the state overall.

Coach Tim Andi’s Uniform Retired in Memoriam The Board of Trustees posthumously recognized and honored Tim Andi’s lifetime achievement and service to the College and officially retired his baseball uniform, jersey number 12. Coach Andi passed away in March 2019.

He was the Head Coach of the Men’s Baseball Team for 25 years (from 1991-2015). During that time he amassed 561 wins, led the Royals to two NJCAA World Series appearances in 1999 and 2002, and was named Region III Coach of the Year four times, Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year seven times, and NJCAA National Coach of the Year after leading the Royals to their second world series appearance in four years in 2002.

Raheem Felder Surpasses 1,000 Points Sophomore combo guard Raheem Felder scored his 1,000th career point in a 101-61 win over Clinton Community College during a home game at the YMCA. He finished his career at SUNY Schenectady with 1,063 points making him the second all-time lead scorer in the history of the Men’s Basketball program at the College.

(Nick Mashino, a 2004 graduate, holds the record at 1,120.)

He was named to the Second All-Conference Team for the Mountain Valley Collegiate Conference. Raheem, a Culinary Arts major who has been named to the Dean’s List, plans to transfer on for his bachelor’s degree and own a business in the culinary arts field.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Students Enter Health Care Fields Dr. Tiziana Rota, Project Director, and students celebrate during a graduation ceremony for students who completed highdemand healthcare training offered through the College’s Office of Workforce Development and Community Education.

Students completed training for: Certified Nurse Aide, Home Health Aide, Personal Care Aide, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Behavioral Health Technician, Community Health Worker, and Medical Administrative Assistant.

Certified Production Technician Celebration Representatives from partnering companies including Universal Plastics, Fort Miller Group, Case Window and Door, BeechNut, and Polyset, were on hand at the Mohonasen Center for Advanced Technology to congratulate the 10 employees who completed the Certified Production Technician training.

The Office of Workforce Development and Community Education launched the Certified Production Technician program in partnership with the Center for Economic Growth (CEG), Capital Region BOCES, and The Business Council of New York State through the KeyBank Foundation’s award of a $250,000, two-year grant to the Center for Economic Growth.

The program recognizes, through certification, individuals who demonstrate mastery of the core competencies of manufacturing production at the front-line (entry-level through front-line supervisor) through successful completion of certification assessments. It raises the level of performance of production workers to both assist individuals in finding higher-wage jobs and help employers ensure their workforce increases the company’s productivity and competitiveness.

Seven students, six of whom are members of Schenectady ARC, graduated from the horticulture certificate program offered through the Office of Workforce Development and Community Education. The class is a collaboration through the College, Schenectady ARC, and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Students enrolled in the 12-week class develop skills in floral design, safety, pest control, greenhouse management, and plant and weed identification.

New Software Developer Apprenticeships One of New York’s first software developer apprenticeships was established in the Capital Region through a partnership among the Center for Economic Growth (CEG), SUNY Schenectady, and Albany Can Code.

The new apprenticeship will help local employers internally recruit workers for hard-to-fill, mid-level talent positions.

Software developer apprentices will undergo 1,000 to 2,000 hours of on-thejob training and 144 hours of related instruction provided by Albany Can Code at SUNY Schenectady. For workers in a variety of fields, apprenticeships are pathways to higher-paying jobs.

FOUNDATION Foundation Welcomes New Board Members Karin Carreau ’98 Karin is the Principal of Carreau Consulting, a boutique government relations firm which has consistently established high political profiles for organizations including the National Association of Social Workers, Families Together in New York State, and YouthBuild. She was a primary negotiator of the state’s “Raise the Age” legislation and architect of its family campaign (passed in 2017), as well as the state’s mental health parity legislation, parity reporting bill, and recent parity expansion (passed 2006, 2018, 2019), all of which increase access to mental health services. In addition, she led the campaign to ban conversion therapy (passed in January 2019), secured millions in funding for at-risk youth, and created (and secured millions of dollars in funding for) the NASW-NYS, MSSNY, and NYSPA statewide Veterans Mental Health Training Initiative.

Laura A. Primiano ’00 As General Manager of the Landing Hotel, connected to Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, Laura is responsible for all functions related to transitioning the property from management company oversight to full independent status. As such, she improved working conditions, restructured the Hotel Leadership Team alignment, and upgraded the hotel stay experience for guests by initiating Team Member/Guest engagement programs. She has received numerous awards and recognition for excellent customer service and superior performance, and she is a Hilton Garden Inn Food and Beverage Champion and Hilton Garden Inn General Manager Certified.

M. A. Waheed M.A. runs the Taj Mahal, an award-winning Indian restaurant in Schenectady. He is a Past President of the Tri-City Indian Association and has been actively engaged in supporting cultural and literary programs for the South Asian community in the Capital District. He is also a regular contributor to local journals for the South Asian community. Throughout his career, M.A. has been a guest lecturer in Bombay, Hyderabad, Chennai, and most recently at NYU and the University at Albany, covering a range of topics including creativity, brand building, advertising, hospitality marketing, multicultural communication, and client relationships.

Food For Thought & All That Jazz 2019 The Foundation welcomed supporters and friends of the College for its signature event, the 28th Annual Food for Thought & All That Jazz. This spectacular evening, featuring delicious cuisine and beautiful sounds of students and faculty in the Culinary Arts and Music programs, was presented by Marshall & Sterling Upstate, with Jeanne M. FOUNDATION Community Celebrates $3.5 Million Campaign at 50th Anniversary Royal Gala The Foundation’s Royal Gala, presented by Marshall & Sterling Insurance, marked the culmination of the Promise of Our Common Future capital campaign.

Through generous support from donors, the campaign goal of $2.5 million was exceeded, raising $3.5 million, which will impact students for generations to come through endowed scholarships, allowing the Foundation to award an extra $125,000 per year in scholarships in perpetuity. The funding will also help transform the library into a modern Learning Commons (scheduled for completion in August 2020).

Contributors to the campaign, which focused on “access” and “success”, included faculty, staff, alumni, Trustees, the Foundation’s Board of Directors, friends of the College, corporate supporters, and members of the Retirees Association, as well as private grants.

Albany ENT Scholarship Albany ENT and Allergy Services is a comprehensive practice devoted to the care of adults and children with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck. Through the Foundation’s capital campaign, Albany ENT created this endowed scholarship to help a student with financial need, enrolled full time or part time in any health care related degree program. (1) Joseph D. and Arlene H. (Hooks) Ehlinger Nutrition Scholarship This new endowed scholarship was created to assist a woman pursuing her associate’s degree in Nutrition.

Preference will be given to a female from the Little Falls or Herkimer County area where the Ehlinger family resided. Joe and Arlene were strong proponents of education and hard work. Through this scholarship, their children Jim, Marc, Elaine, John, Bob, Joan, and Mary wish to honor their parents, and especially Arlene’s strong interest in nutrition. (2) Martin, Harding & Mazzotti Scholarship More than 20 years ago, Bruce L. Martin, Paul B. Harding, and SUNY Schenectady Foundation Board Member Victor L. Mazzotti joined together to form Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, LLP,

a New York based personal injury law firm. In addition to their commitment to helping clients, Martin, Harding & Mazzotti believes strongly in giving back to their neighbors and started this endowed scholarship to help students in perpetuity. (3)

Silas & Ethel Moono Scholarship College President Dr. Steady Moono and his wife, Kelly, created this scholarship in honor of his parents, Silas and Ethel Moono. It will be awarded to a returning student in any degree program, enrolled full time or part time, who has successfully completed one year in the Student Mentoring Program. The recipient must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5. (4) Phillips Family Scholarship This scholarship was created through a planned gift by Terry Phillips, Foundation Board Member Emeritus, and his wife Anne, and will be awarded to an entering student with financial need, enrolled full time or part time in any degree program, with preference given to a single parent, an Eagle Scout, and/or a first-generation college student. (5) The Promise Fund The result of generous contributions made to SUNY Schenectady’s Promise

of Our Common Future Campaign, the Promise Fund provides scholarships to entering students, with the promise to continue supporting them each year until they complete their degree, up to three years, not to exceed the cost of tuition. They may be used for tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses, with the goal of offsetting the need for student loans and graduating as many students as possible debt-free. (6)

Still Small Voice 4U Lee Shaw Scholarship Established by Kathy and Ron Cooke in honor of “First Lady of Jazz” Lee Shaw, an American jazz pianist and composer, this scholarship provides one scholarship annually to a student enrolled in the School of Music who is pursuing a career in jazz, with preference given to women. (7) UHY Advisors/ Kotlow Scholarship Dick Kotlow (UHY Advisors retiree), Promise Campaign Co-Chair and Foundation Board Member, created this endowed scholarship, along with UHY Advisors, to help students achieve their educational goals. UHY Advisors is one of the top professional services firms in the country, and UHY International is one of the largest accounting networks in the world. (8)

FOUNDATION Remembering the Honorable Karen Brown Johnson SUNY Schenectady honors the extraordinary life of the Honorable Karen Brown Johnson, who supported countless students attending the College over the course of decades. Karen passed away peacefully at her home in Schenectady on June 10, 2019.

Karen was a champion of the people of Schenectady throughout her many years of civic engagement and tireless advocacy.

When she moved to Schenectady in 1967, her career in public service started almost immediately. Early on, she devoted her energies to the Schenectady City School District and increased her service through her election as the first woman to the Schenectady City Council in 1975. In 1983, Karen became the first woman to be elected Schenectady’s mayor, serving in this role for two terms, and later serving as a member of the Schenectady County Legislature from 2001 until her death.

Always passionate about bringing people together for the common purpose of creating innovative solutions to community challenges, Karen was instrumental in preventing the Glendale Nursing Home from closing, helped to save Proctors from demolition, established the Kids Arts Festival, and founded Jazz on Jay. She was also a member of the third generation of her family’s business, Highlights for Children.

SUNY Schenectady honored Karen as a Distinguished Community Volunteer in 2016. In 2018, she earned Schenectady’s highest distinction, the Patroon Award, and she was recognized by the Women’s Fund of the Capital Region as a Trailblazer. In March 2019, the Schenectady County Legislature elected to name in her honor the main branch

SUNY Schenectady is creating an area that will beautify the campus and become a serene space for students and visitors. The walkway will feature a commemorative brick pathway. Bricks engraved with the names of alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and retirees serve as a reminder of the people who are part of our history and our future.

Support Students on Their SUNY Schenectady Journey Your participation in Paving the Way for Future Royals will help to ease financial burdens that pose obstacles to a student’s academic success, graduation, and personal growth. Contributions fund scholarships that cover the cost of books and fees, emergency loans that help alleviate temporary stresses, Food Pantry supplies, and Achieving The Dream.
