Message from the President

I

t is with great enthusiasm that I present the 2014-2015 annual report for SUNY Maritime College. It is hard to believe a year has passed since I assumed the presidency of this outstanding college. During this year, the college celebrated its 140th Anniversary, a milestone that would not have been possible without the support and generosity of industry partners, alumni, families and friends of the college. Nor was it possible without the dedication and commitment of our faculty and staff to our students’ academic experience.

I have spent much of my first year listening and learning. In nautical terms, I was taking a fix to ascertain the position of the college to determine where we need to head in the future. Toward this end, I attended 25 alumni events from New York to Florida to the West Coast. During these visits I met with industry leaders to better understand their needs regarding workforce requirements and what they want to see in our graduates.

Working with the Maritime Administrator and the other state maritime academy presidents, I made seven trips to Washington, D.C., to help formulate the requirements for a new class of multi-purpose vessels to replace the state maritime academies’ aging training ships. During these trips, students and I visited 48 congressional offices. As a result of our collective efforts, President Obama’s FY2016 budget included $5.0 million within the Department of Transportation budget for the conceptual design of a “National Security MultiMission Vessel” (NSMV). Once full funding is secured and the ships are built, these vessels will train future mariners and be available for national tasking to support humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions.

I am also pleased to share that in the coming year we will focus on the following six areas: 1. Strategic Plan. To refresh our strategic plan, we will answer the questions: “What does it mean to be a graduate of SUNY Maritime College?” And “What will Maritime College look like 10 years from now?”

2. Student Success. Attention will be toward enhancing a climate focused on student success, both at the college and in their careers. It is our goal to create a more diverse student body that upon graduation is aware of industry options.

3. Faculty. Emphasis will be placed on attracting and retaining high quality faculty who are expert teachers, industry-aware and subject-matter thought leaders.

4. Programs. Ensure the relevancy of our programs to industry, both today and into the future.

5. Facilities. We will continue our campaign to replace the Empire State VI, and to update our science, engineering and athletics facilities. Coordinating with the Department of Transportation, the Maritime Administration, and Congress we are working to ensure funding for the first NSMV which will replace TS Empire State VI. 6. Partnerships. Efforts will be focused on continuing to build partnerships with our alumni, industry supporters, and marine and maritime-focused high schools to maintain a strong pipeline of students and outside resources.

We cannot accomplish all of these initiatives on our own and I will be connecting with you to help on many levels. Please enjoy reading about our accomplishments over the last year in this 2014-15 annual report.

I invite you to visit campus whenever you can. You’ll see firsthand many of the exciting things taking place. I look forward to continuing this journey with you on the next leg of our voyage.

Captain, Women’s Volleyball Bayport, New York “It’s an amazing feeling to be on the first women’s team to qualify for a postseason tournament. The women’s volleyball team could not have achieved this milestone in Maritime’s history without the hard work of my fellow teammates.”

Dr. Timothy G. Lynch, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, added to the ranks of Fort Schuyler Press publications with “Beyond the Golden Gate: A Maritime History of California,” the result of three years of archival research. The book chronicles the state’s development through its network of oceans, lakes and rivers, and the role they played in the commerce, combat, recreation and trade of Native Americans and regional visitors. It is the first comprehensive look at the state’s maritime history, the Gold Rush and its impact on the marine environment, and the balance between use and protection of California’s waterways.

Faculty

Dr. Joseph Hoffman, professor of math and computer science, was appointed the first dean of the Office of Graduate Studies. In that role, Dr. Hoffman will play a significant role in shaping the future of graduate education and establishing a School of Graduate Studies. He will oversee, develop and implement policies about graduate education, student scholarship, academic quality, and student recruitment and retention.

Humanities Dr. Mark Meirowitz, assistant professor of humanities, was instrumental in orchestrating the Gallipoli Conference to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Dardanelles/Cannakale campaign. Delegates from Australia, Turkey and New Zealand attended the full-day event which served as a conversational touchstone and demonstrated SUNY Maritime’s position as a center for vibrant intellectual activities.

Dr. Meirowitz was also responsible for a series of presentations and publications that investigated TurkishAmerican relations and politics.

The State University of New York and the New York

State Education Department approved Maritime College’s 31-credit master of science in maritime and naval studies program for students in fall 2015. The curriculum centers around maritime and naval history, literature, transportation and environmental policy. Courses are offered entirely online and the degree can be completed in three semesters.

Science Dr. Daniel An, assistant professor of mathematics, presented research at the Conference on Conformal Cyclic Cosmology in Warsaw, Poland. His current research is geometrical structures related to four-dimensional spaces.

Dr. Barbara Warkentine, biology professor, had a paper published in “Northeastern Naturalist.” The paper was titled “Water Quality Assessment of two Slow Moving Sandy Bottom Sites on the Saw Mill River.”

Dr. Marie DeAngelis, oceanography professor, was featured in “Oceanography,” the official journal of the Oceanography Society. The issue focused on women in oceanography.

Dr. Caterina Panzeca, assistant professor of marine environmental science, won a grant from the Center for Microbial Oceanography to assist in her inaugural summer offering, passport to oceanography.

Dr. Linda Sturges, math professor, and Mr. Conrad Linton, math lecturer, implemented the second year of a three-year $1.8 million Community Learning Grant that utilized Maritime College students to deliver STEM activities in two high schools in the Bronx during afterschool and summer programs.

Across all academic departments, SUNY Maritime College faculty are working to expand their knowledge, discover new information and build connections in their fields. Throughout the year, faculty conduct and present research, host conversations and expand opportunities for their students.

Marine Transportation Department chair Anthony Palmiotti and other marine transportation instructors participated in the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) leadership course and became certified assessors.

Instructor Tamara Reul upgraded her professional qualifications to chief mate, management level license.

Professional Education and Training The professional education and training (PET) department established programs with the New York City Department of Veteran Services to provide professional training for veterans seeking employment in the maritime industry.

Approximately 40 veterans participated in two STCW courses and one industry familiarization course.

Using PET facilities on campus, McAllister Towing and Transportation captains underwent two weeks of training including refresher courses.

Global Business and Transportation Dr. Virginia (Vicki) Ferritto, assistant professor of organizational management and international business, conducted a comparative, quantitative study exploring license students’ perceived academic performance and various factors specific to maritime education. Survey respondents identified the factors as favorably or negatively impacting their academic performance.

She presented her paper at the Maritime Education Summit 2014.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense appointed assistant professor Stash Pelkowski, in his capacity as a rear admiral in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, to the

Department of Defense Reserve Forces Policy Board.

The board is an advisory committee that provides recommendations directly to the Secretary of Defense.

James Drogan, senior lecturer and department chairman, was a member of an international team of educators that reviewed transportation and logistics programs at the Caribbean Maritime Institute. He also conducted a review of the program leading to the associate of science supply chain management degree offered by Excelsior Community College in Jamaica.

Dr. Dan Fridline, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, presented a paper, “Structural Health Monitoring of Marine and Offshore Structures Using Ambient Vibration Monitoring: Modeling, Sensors, and Data Analysis,” at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) conference.

Greg Hanchrow, global business and transportation adjunct professor, presented a paper, “Moving from Training to Practice – A Comparison of the Maritime and Aviation Industry Crew Resource Management Education Programs,” at the International Maritime Lecturers Association conference in South Africa.

Engineering Dr. Richard Burke, professor of engineering, was appointed a presidential scholar with the Research Foundation of the State University of New York. In that role, he examined barriers to research at SUNY’s comprehensive, technology and community colleges, and looked at ways those barriers could be reduced to allow for more original research on the campuses.

Hartley Spatt

Faculty Retirement After a dedicated 39-year tenure as an English professor, Hartley Spatt retired in 2015. A favorite among students for his great sense of humor, Spatt created many humanities courses taught today, including the Maritime Studies Capstone, History of Technology and 20th Century Technology. He served as president of the Faculty-Student Association board of directors for much of his time at Maritime. The SUNY Board of Trustees named him a distinguished teaching professor. Teaching online in retirement, he continues to be popular with students.

I learned how to deal with people in a professional work environment, and how to deal with at least a 40-hour workweek. I’ve interned with Turner Construction and Trident Seafoods. Although they were completely different fields, I got to learn about different things, and was able to envision the success I could achieve.”

SUNY Maritime is a leader in applied learning. Students complement their lessons and gain a better understanding of the world they are about to enter through summer sea term, cadet shipping or working as an intern in the field. At sea and in the classroom, our programs align and remain current with industry best practices.

Maintaining state-of-the-industry facilities is both a necessity and a challenge. This year, thanks to gifts from generous donors and assistance from SUNY’s multi-year capital program, several new spaces opened and others were renovated. The college remains committed to updating other facilities.

The Maritime Academic Center, built with more than $30 million from SUNY strategic initiative funding, officially opened. Housing classrooms and faculty offices, the building includes cutting-edge technology for lessons and presentations.

Vander Clute Hall is home to a student learning center, created with help from a generous donation from the Class of 1949. The center offers tutoring and writing assistance to all students.

Made possible by a generous gift from the Class of 1963, a Veterans Center opened in Vander Clute Hall. The center is a dedicated place to seek assistance with veteran-specific services, issues and questions. It is also a great space for veterans to relax and socialize.

Thanks to a gift of nearly $1 million from Mr. Morton S. Bouchard III and the Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc., a state-of-the-art Tug and Barge Simulation Center was established in Fort Schuyler.

Relationships across the maritime world are a vital part of SUNY Maritime. Partnerships help to ensure the college stays strong and retains its primacy in maritime education, and that students receive a strong education that prepares them for the professional world.

As SUNY Maritime works to secure funding for a National Security Multi-Mission Vessel to replace the Empire State VI and the other academy training ships, RADM Alfultis traveled to Washington, D.C., to build relationships with and gain support from elected officials, including meeting with 48 congressional offices. U.S. Reps.

Joe Crowley (D-NY), pictured above with La’Quey Smith ’16 marine transportation, and Ann E. Boston ’15 electrical engineering; Joe Courtney (D-CT); and Dan Benisheck (R-MI) paved the way to build a coalition of bipartisan support in the House. New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Kristen Gillibrand enlisted support from their Senate colleagues.

Generous alumni and friends of the college made the Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner a resounding success. The college honored MARAD Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen Sr., Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association President Marshal Ainley, American Maritime Officers National President Paul Doell, and Don Marcus, president of the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots. More than $600,000 was raised to support scholarships.

Expenses † Residence Hall IFR - The State University of New York residence halls are operated under the Income Fund Reimbursable (IFR) system that requires all operating costs, fringe benefits and debt service costs of the residence halls be funded from income generated by the residence hall operation. The college has the capacity to house more than 1,300 students within four residence halls.

Students occupy the rooms during the fall and spring semesters. Camps and conferences use the residence halls during the summer months.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES Annual Gifts An unrestricted gift to the Sallyport Fund gives the college the flexibility to use your gift where it is most needed – for tuition and operational assistance, athletic and extra-curricular activities, faculty and staff enhancements, and educational programs. All gifts help attract the most talented students and faculty to SUNY Maritime, allowing the college to continue its long tradition of excellence.

The Sallyport Fund provides incentives and the means for alumni, parents and friends to contribute private, tax-deductible gifts that will directly enhance the educational experience of the student body.

Admiral’s Council Individuals and companies who make annual gifts of $1,000 or more will become members of the Admiral’s Council. Each year, Admiral’s Council members are invited to a special day at Maritime College at which they have an opportunity to see and hear about the progress of the college firsthand from its leaders.

Buy a Brick Campaign For a minimum gift of $1,000 the college will recognize your generous donation by placing an engraved commemorative brick on campus. Become a permanent part of the Maritime College landscape by purchasing a brick.

The Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner The Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner, held annually in May, is the primary event to raise funds for student scholarships. Each year, distinguished alumni and friends are honored for their contributions to the college and to the industries they serve.

The Admiral’s Dinner is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with classmates, network with industry leaders, and raise scholarship funds.

Elizabeth Bonn Memorial Scholarship

Ashley O’Brien ’17

Marine Environmental Sciences Queens, New York

Ashley planned to get an art degree until her father suggested SUNY Maritime. Now a second-class cadet, Ashley hopes to be a shipboard environmental officer.

Since her arrival on campus, Ashley has transformed from a shy person to a campus leader.

She is the president of the college’s philanthropy club, a member of Chorale and the swim team, and is helping to reach out to high school girls to educate them about the maritime industry.

The recipient of several scholarships, Ashley is extremely grateful for the financial support they have provided. One of them is the Elizabeth Bonn memorial scholarship, funded from an endowment created by Deborah and Thomas Bonn in memory of their daughter, Elizabeth Bonn ’04. A proud graduate of the NROTC program with a degree in marine environmental science, Elizabeth was training to be a Navy helicopter pilot and was tragically killed in a flight training crash in 2006. The Bonns established this scholarship to support students like Elizabeth. They also support an NROTC scholarship.

Ashley is proud to have been chosen as the recipient of the Elizabeth Bonn scholarship.

As Ashley’s family has had to move and confront several health-related challenges, the funds have helped her afford a SUNY Maritime education.

Fresh Meadow Scholarship

Timothy McKenna ’19 Mechanical Engineering Farmingdale, New York

Valves, pumps and the chance to see the world brought Tim to SUNY Maritime.

The mechanical engineering major could have gone to any number of schools, but the 565-foot lab that is the Empire State VI helped him make up his mind.

In addition to learning the ins and outs of the ship’s engine rooms and other facilities, Tim has wasted no time getting involved. He quickly joined the drill team, which frequently practices after 9 p.m. and the union club, the college’s Catholic student organization.

After graduation, Tim hopes to ship out for a few years before returning to land and a shore-side job.

To reach that goal, Fresh Meadow is helping him pay for the studies that will put Tim on a path to success. Every year, Fresh Meadow sponsors two scholarships at the Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner. This year, scholarships sponsored by Fresh Meadow’s John Valvo ’80, and Russell Thompson were awarded.

“This amazing scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to go on summer sea term this year,” Tim said. “I’m looking forward to learning about the ship and visiting Europe. Paying for it is a burden that’s been lifted off my shoulders.”
