Our commitment to a hands-on education situates students with both the academic structure customary of undergraduate study and unique opportunities for training and cutting-edge research, ultimately providing learners an unmatched education targeted for success in our fast-changing world. SUNY Poly students enjoy public school tuition with benefits that many small, private institutions boast, including small class sizes, individualized learning experiences, and a tight-knit community.

BS Mechanical Engineering Technology

The Program

Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) is a specialized field that applies engineering principles to design, develop, test, and manufacture mechanical systems and products. It bridges the gap between theoretical mechanical engineering and practical, hands-on applications in industries ranging from manufacturing to energy, robotics, aerospace, and more. MET focuses on the practical side of mechanical engineering, emphasizing the application of technology, materials, and processes in real-world scenarios. Mechanical Engineering Technology is hands-on and practical, involving the design, testing, production, and operation of mechanical systems. As such, MET professionals are typically more involved in the direct application and implementation of engineering solutions.

Key Areas of Focus in Mechanical Engineering Technology

Students in the MET program develop proficiency in the following areas to ensure that they are ready for success in high-demand careers. The engineering technology programs at SUNY Poly are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. www.abet.org

• Automation and Control Systems

• Design and Drafting

• Maintenance and Troubleshooting

• Materials and Manufacturing Processes

• Mechanics and Thermodynamics

• Testing and Quality Assurance

• Professionalism and Communication Why does this matter? ABET accreditation:

• Verifies your degree meets global standards of mechanical engineering technology

• Enhances employment opportunities - in the United States and internationally

• Qualifies you to sit for professional licensure

• Increases your eligibility for scholarships

The need for mechanical engineers is expanding! Employment is expected to grow by 11% by 2033.

Student Involvement

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

SUNY Poly’s student chapter of ASME is one of hundreds from across the globe, providing its members with an international network of peers who are making a difference in the mechanical engineering professional community while still in college. Our student chapter participates in competitions and offers educational and networking activities. Membership also offers volunteer opportunities and access to key resources that will open doors when you start your career, as well as benefits including access to scholarships and a repository of 800+ professional engineering papers to assist you on your projects and research.

SAE International (Baja SAE) Students who join Baja SAE, also known as Wildcat Motorsports, have the opportunity to design, build, and race an off-road race car against other universities from across the country. The club provides a project-based lab environment that encourages members to develop professional skills while working on a complex and multifaceted project.

Our Campus

Located in Utica, NY, on hundreds of wooded and landscaped acres, SUNY Poly’s campus is a beautiful living and learning environment. Students live in our modern, spacious residential complexes, including the new Hilltop Hall, SUNY’s first zero-net carbon residence hall, and enjoy an expanding array of student-focused facilities that include our state-ofthe-art Center for Global Advanced Manufacturing, Student Center, and Wildcat Field House. Life on campus is enriched by a wide variety of events and activities, including the Wildcats’ championshipwinning intercollegiate athletics program, our Wildcat Esports team, and a weekly agenda of intramurals, concerts, comedians, and more. Students can join one of the dozens of clubs and organizations or start one with a group of friends who share an interest.

Couch ’22

BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology

I always enjoyed understanding how things worked, especially mechanical components. The MET program gave me a chance to understand things on a fundamental level and learn how to recreate and redesign them better. Understanding the ‘why’ and how to create things opened the door to so many opportunities. My best experience on campus was joining our SAE Baja team, Wildcat Motorsports. It allowed me to apply every aspect of what I knew from my MET classes and life experiences to create something tangible.
