Football Superstitions

With football season coming up, a lot of fans have superstitions when it comes to their favorite team or player. A superstition is an unjustified belief in the supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event. To put that into simple terms, people do weird things so that their favorite team will win. The kinds of things fans do may vary to how big the fan is. A more casual viewing fan may have a small superstition like not eating until the game starts, whereas superfans may have crazy ones; we will dive into that later.

Superstitions in sports have been around for as long as sports have been around. I have some superstitions of my own, some on game days and some off game days.On game day, I wear the jersey of my favorite player, on my favorite team, of course. However, I do not just wear it all day, I only wear it during the game. This means that right before the game starts, I put it on, wear it throughout the game, then once the game is over, I take it off again. The one that is not on game day still involves the jersey. The days I do not work, I wear the jersey as part of my outfit. It is nice when it is cold outside and I can layer it. Along with these two, I do not wash the jersey unless something makes it visibly dirty. It’s gross, I know, but I can’t be washing all the good luck off of it unless it really calls for it. Now, I know my story seems a little out there; just wait until you hear about some others.

4 I www.swmlife.com

Some of the craziest superstitions sound wild to us, but to these fans they are normal. One fan has a statue of his team’s quarterback and kisses his head before every game for good luck. Another fan said every time he saw his team in person they would always lose, so when he was at an NFL playoff game, his team was down by double digits, so he did what any superstitious fan would do, he left. His team later came back to win that game and make it to the Super Bowl. Another crazy fan went through great lengths to make sure his team had every bit of luck. He fasted on game day and the day before to help his team. I do not know about you, but in no way am I doing that.

Superstitions do not just belong to the fans; even players have them too. Brian Urlacker would eat chocolate chip cookies before every game. He was one of the most dominant linebackers in the league. Emmanuel Sanders would play Madden before the game. He would beat that day’s opponent in Madden using his own team. Whether it be a lucky pair of socks or something as crazy as not eating for your team, all sports have superstitions. Superstitions do not plan on going away anytime soon either, so maybe try one out for your team when they need that little extra help to get the win!

directions1. Add the milk to a small saucepan. Heat until just warm (105-120 degrees F). In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Stir to dissolve. Set aside for about 10 minutes.

2. To the milk and yeast mixture, add 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 3 tablespoons melted butter, sugar, egg yolk, and salt. Beat with a mixer on medium until just combined. Add half of the flour. Beat on low for about 30 seconds. Scrape the bowl as needed. Beat for 3 minutes on medium. Then stir in the remaining flour.

3. Shape the dough into a ball; then place in a greased bowl. Cover with a tea towel and let rise in a warm place for about 50 minutes. The dough should double in size.

4. Spray a 9x5-inch loaf pan with baking spray. Set aside.

5. Turn the dough out on a lightly floured surface. With a floured rolling pin, roll the dough out into a 20x12-inch rectangle.

6. In a medium bowl, mix 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 3 tablespoons melted butter, cinnamon, kosher salt, nutmeg, and ground cloves. Spread this over the dough. Sprinkle evenly with the filling topping of brown sugar and cinnamon.

7. Cut the dough into five 12x4-inch strips. Then, stack the strips together.

8. Cut them into five 5x2.5-inch pieces. Transfer the stacks to your prepared loaf pan. Let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes or until it about doubled in size.

9. While the loaf rises, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Bake for about 35 minutes or until golden brown. (If needed, you can loosely cover the bread with a piece of foil to prevent overbrowning.) Cool for about 15 minutes; then remove from the pan.

10. In the meantime, prepare your cinnamon glaze by whisking to the powdered sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt. Add as much milk as needed, one tablespoon at a time, to create a glaze that can be drizzled.

11. Transfer the loaf to a serving dish, and drizzle with the prepared glaze.

HALLOWEEN MOVIES

With the smell of pumpkin spice in the air, and the cool breeze that comes late October, everyone has one movie that’s a “must watch” when approaching the spooky halloween season! With so many different types of Halloween movies from Horror, to Thriller, to Comedy, narrowing down those favorites is a difficult task. I decided to give my opinion on the best movie in each of these categories!

COMEDY:

• Classic: Beetlejuice

• Modern: Monster House

• Runner Ups: Adams Family, Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas, & The Burbs

HORROR:

• Classic: Halloween

• Modern: Texas Chainsaw Massacre

• Runner Ups: Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, & Scream

THRILLER:

• Classic: The Exorcist

• Modern: IT

• Runner Ups: The Shining, The Silence of the Lambs, The Sixth Sense, & Paranormal Activity

FAMILY-FRIENDLY:

• Classic: Ghostbusters

• Modern: Goosebumps

• Runner Ups: Frankenweenie, Casper, Scooby Doo, & Halloweentown

FUN FACT: Horror vs Thriller: Horror is the seemingly inevitable but predictable doom, where the climax of the movie is either getting away or stopping the evil, whereas thrillers are all about a tension-filled story that’s not predictable.

CHIEFS vs BUCCANEERS

The Chiefs and Buccaneers game was one to remember. Twenty months ago, the Bucceneers had their way with the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. This was a rematch of that game, and it went the opposite way. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs handed it to Tom Brady and the Bucs. Final Score: 41-31 Chiefs.

October 16th @ 6:20 PM:

EAGLES vs COWBOYS

With a rivalry starting in the 1960s, the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have always been one of the top two in their division. Both of these teams are ranked very closely in ESPNs preseason rankings For the past 6 years it has been a toss up to who will win the division. This year is no different, as both teams are looking closer than ever in terms of talent and skill.

October 16th @ 2:25 PM:

CHIEFS vs BILLS

Last year, many people were calling this game the “Game of the Year.” The score was a combined 78 points that went into overtime! Not to mention that the game was also a Playoff game with high stakes on the line. The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have two of the most electrifying quarterbacks in the league with the receiver and runningback weapons to potentially make this the highest scoring game of the season.

TAKING A HIKE

Four ways interest Rate Hikes Can Affect Your Finances

Unless you live on another planet, you are fully aware of this thing called inflation whether you’re at the grocery store, a gas station, buying clothes online, hiring a contractor or doing almost any other thing that requires spending money for something. Earlier this year, the Federal Reserve started raising interest rates to rein in inflation, which reached another 40 year high in June By raising rates, the Fed hopes to slow the economy and inflation That’s because as borrowing becomes more expensive, consumers tend to reduce spending. The drop in demand for goods eventually leads to lower prices.

The Fed doesn’t set interest rates on credit cards, mortgages, auto loans, and savings accounts, but its actions influence those rates Here are four ways interest rate hikes can affect your finances and how to deal with the impact:

1. Credit Cards

Most cards charge a variable rate that’s tied to the bank’s prime rate the rate banks charge their best customers (many consumers pay an additional rate on top of prime, based on their credit profile )

Banks typically raise their prime rate quickly after the Fed boosts its key rate HIKING TIP: It may take a couple of statements before you notice the impact of a rate increase. Start paying down any balance before rates get much higher, focusing on the card with the highest rate first

2. Mortgages

If you have a fixed-rate mortgage, your monthly payments will stay the same. If you refinanced over the last few years and locked in a rate in the 2% to 3% range, that was really good timing However, if you have an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM), you may be faced with having to make larger payments, depending on the terms of your loan. HIKING TIP: If you have an ARM, budget for higher payments. Or, if you anticipate buying a home within the next year or two, take steps to improve your credit score so you can secure a lower interest rate

3. Home Equity Line of Credit

This allows you to borrow against the equity in your home as needed, usually at a variable interest rate. Borrowers typically pay only interest on the amount borrowed for the first 10 years, and thereafter must repay interest and the principal over the next, say, 15 or 20 years Your Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) rate can adjust monthly or quarterly. So, if you have an outstanding balance, your payments will likely go up when the Fed implements a rate hike HIKING TIP: If you have a HELOC, budget for higher payments You can also pay down your HELOC balance to reduce the interest you pay, or talk to your lender about options, such as refinancing.

14 I www.swmlife.com
Member FINRA/SIPC

4. Auto Loans

It’s already more expensive to buy a new or used car, as their prices have increased dramatically over the last two years. This is due to a number of reasons that have resulted in supply not keeping up with demand Unfortunately, if you’re planning on financing the purchase of a vehicle in the near future, you’ll need to add in the higher cost of borrowing HIKING TIP: Make a down payment of at least 20% of the purchase of a new car, and no less than 10% for a used car. A sizable down payment will lower your monthly payments and could help secure a lower interest rate.

BUDGETING

In the association world, we are busy preparing budgets for the upcoming year. Association budgets may have lots of lines, and in some cases, a few more zeros, but the principles are simple, just like our personal budgets. Personally, I like preparing budgets by looking at them from different perspectives. Let’s talk about some different ways to approach creating an HOA budget:

Set expense levels based on historical costs.

I like the point of reference, using prior experience to gauge the future, but certainly we need to be aware of how inflation or other factors may affect pricing. In an established community, where utility bills (for example) are fairly consistent, using historical data is very useful. We can reach out to the utility provider to know the expected rate increases. And with that input, set a reasonable budget.

Start with a zero base budget.

From this viewpoint, every dollar needs to be justified to be in the budget. In some cases, this does not make sense. Say your building supplies budget is made up of lots of very small purchases. I don’t see the value in spending time in the budget process to itemize the rolls of toilet paper, batteries, pens, paper, or other office supplies. For items like this, perhaps a historical view works better. But, when looking at something like landscape projects, perhaps a zero-up approach works well. Let’s justify every dollar of tree care, sprinkler system revamp, or replacement of ground cover based on the specific needs of the upcoming year.

Consider service levels to set budgets.

The primary question to be answered here is: How much do we need to budget to maintain (or change, up or down) the current levels of service? What are the service intervals for the custodial vendor or the pool service? Has the use of the facilities changed? Is more or less service needed
