Ahuge push for punctuality and so many trains back to back in line on major routes not just put a lot of strain on the machines but humans too. And railway staff are no different. spoke to a few officials who ruled out the possibility of “sabotage” in the Odisha incident, but said the error could have possibly made due to “overburdened” staff, and that it was an “unintentional mistake”. Last week, had reported that as of February, out of 96,582 sanctioned nongazetted posts in the South Eastern Railway (SER), 17,811 are vacant. Further, out of 937 sanctioned gazetted posts, 150 are vacant. Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Odisha, where the accident took place that killed over 270 people, is under the SER. Also, 14,815 posts are vacant across India in the Signal and Telecommunication department alone. A senior official from SER explained to that the staff, who are directly involved in train operations, are under a lot of pressure.

“On major busy routes, like the railway staff, who are directly involved in train operations, are under a lot of pressure.

Other officials also said questioning their own staff, who work tirelessly to operate thousands of trains per day, is ‘demoralising’ one where the accident took place, trains are so frequent that in around every two-three minutes, there will be a train. Sometimes, the pressure is so high that they may ignore some issues, not intentionally, but by accident,” the official said, demanding anonymity. Also, stopping one train will impact punctuality of not just that one train but those behind it as well.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today claimed that there is an attempt to suppress the reasons for the railway accident in Odisha and the CBI is being used to cover up the lapses as victims’ families are asking questions.

“I thought I won’t say this, but the situation has forced me to say it. Such a huge accident has occurred. There is an effort to cover up the lapses.

The families who’ve lost everything want answers. They want the true information to come out,” she alleged. “Why did the accident happen? Why did so many people die? This is this century’s biggest incident. What will the CBI do? If it’s a criminal case, the CBI can do something. Haven’t you seen Pulwama and what the then Governor has said?” she added. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the June 2 triple train crash. “The actual accident is not being investigated and everything is being cleared,” Ms Banerjee claimed. “There is no evidence. I want the truth to come out. The railway accident is not being investigated but the CBI has been sent here (Bengal) by Delhi and they have entered some 14 to 16 municipalities in Kolkata. They have entered the urban development department. Ask them, if now they will enter washrooms also? By doing this they cannot cover up such a big accident,” the Chief Minister added. The CBI is conducting searches in the state in connection with the alleged irregularities in municipal corporations.

Mamata Banerjee said an estimated 103 people from West Bengal have died in the accident and around 40-50 people from Bengal are missing.

Gujarat HC rejects bail plea of accused who made defamatory posts on PM Modi and his mother

Sunvilla News: Ahmedabad

- Kapilkumar M. Hirpara Editor

Budget airlines have become plunderers in the skies, running amok, selling everything – exorbitant fares, printed tickets, baggage, seats, leg space, and food, in the name of “open skies policy”, “deregulation”, and “surge pricing”. Naked, unfettered extortion is happening, making the lives of thousands of travellers including students a plain misery. India is a nation that is quick to adapt all regressive Western practices. One such practice imbibed by the airline, railway, and taxi network is ‘surge pricing’. This is the practice of hiking the standard prices of goods and services to high levels, citing greater demand. The individual consumers do not get to know the quantum of the demand level, as there is zero transparency. The complete anonymity that online transactions guarantee makes it a secret exercise by a coterie of airline officials to jack up prices abnormally. The holiday season, festival season, and student admission season, all witness manipulated soaring airfares. Currently, many routes in India are witnessing a 4 to 6 times abnormal hike in fares. There are millions of travellers proceeding to Gulf countries and Europe, and vice versa, but exorbitant hikes in airfare are proving to be beyond the reach of ordinary people. Voracious greed for profiteering is propelling ticket fares to dizzying heights. With zero accountability of any kind and hardly any competitors, the air pirates are engaged in a daily price-hike game. The government and the Ministry of Civil Aviation are helpless spectators, watching the everyday game of price hikes, now restricted to just two major airlines. One also wonders as to why the Government of India is maintaining a full-fledged Ministry of Civil Aviation along with a battery of bureaucrats. Unable to instil any sense in this everyminute game of price-hike, the Kerala government has taken a bold decision to launch a ship service with the cooperation of the Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs (NORKA), the official body of the diaspora of Kerala ethnicity. The Kerala government has allocated Rs 15 crore for this proposed venture. However, this project will not have any effect on the domestic flight sector and will only have a marginal impact on the Gulf sector, as and when the shipping service commences. The Government of India can initiate effective steps to control the manipulated everyminute price hike by simply curtailing the travel plans of ministers and bureaucrats who constitute a major chunk of daily travellers. By switching over to online meetings, much unwanted expenditure can be reined in. It is also pointless in wasting taxpayers’ money on abnormal airfare. Similarly, the government should not permit any Leave Travel Concession (LTC) and Home Travel Concession (HTC) to employees when fares go beyond an optimal level. Just by simply regulating the air travel of bureaucrats and their families, the market can be influenced to keep fares within the Lakshman Rekha. The government is also guilty of adopting this obnoxious practice of ‘surge pricing’ in the railway sector. Many train fares are unaffordable for the common man as the dubious practice of ‘surge pricing’ is being resorted to for augmenting revenue. Here also, by simply regulating the travels of bureaucrats.
