EDITOR’S WELCOME

Speaking of local talent, we feature the fabulously creative Suzanne Long and her floral business, Fauxliage. Inspired by her mother’s legacy, Long built a faux flower business located in downtown Ketchum that brings everlasting beauty to her stunning custom arrangements designed for the home, office, or special events.

The heat of autumn is different from the heat of summer. One ripens apples, the other turns them to cider. This line from Jane Hirshfield’s poem “The Heat of Autumn” reminds me of the seasonal shift that brings us the opportunity to make something sweet from what has been tended to during summer. The Big Wood River slows its rhythm while the aspen leaves brighten in color then descend toward the earth. September in Sun Valley marks a slower season as winter whispers in the north. The invitation is to create with intention and let the process transform you. In this issue, our featured stories include the spectacular real estate property of Golden Eagle Estate, as seen on the July cover of SVPN, where grand architecture and fine art converge in the nearby landscape comprised of waterfalls and lakes. The home at 121 Feather Lane was conceived as an art gallery, and features renowned works by sculptor Allen Houser and painter Fritz Scholder. Celebrating iconic architecture in the Wood River Valley, we highlight Greenhorn Cabin, a residential property designed by Farmer Payne Architects. The structural gem, located at Greenhorn Gulch with views of Baldy, is crafted from stone, steel, and timber and combines technical ingenuity, elevated interior design, and thoughtful landscaping, resulting in a home that appears to have emerged from the hillside. The project is exemplary of the local talent that is redefining modern mountain living. 32

As we continue to move through America’s 250th year, we open our pages to the powerful photographs of Stephen Wilkes. Exhibited by Gilman Contemporary, the artist’s images trace a nation in motion across urban spaces, vast stretches of land, abandoned industrial complexes, and abstracted landscapes. Similar to the changing season we are in, Wilkes’ perspective reflects a country that is both building and vanishing, still and teeming. Our Fine Arts section highlights gallery exhibits across the Valley spotlighting local and international artists, from oil paintings of Idaho’s landscapes to tin collages from the West Coast Pop movement. Be sure to plan a visit to the Sun Valley Museum of Art to view the impressive Circa 1971 exhibit or check out their calendar of events featuring free live music by the Sawtooth Strings, a workshop with watercolor artist Sue Johnston, and more. When not immersed in the tonic of the wild or engaging in the vibrant local art scene, you may find yourself tableside at some of the region’s most celebrated culinary establishments. Our SVPN Dining Guide takes you through the diversity of flavors and wine lists from around the world, served right here in town. Slowing down doesn’t mean stopping. It signifies the importance of thoughtfully moving forward with the projects, plans, and people that are close to our hearts. Whether it’s a bookmarked recipe, a trip that has been manifesting, or a home project waiting to take form, this transitional time invites it all to be birthed. Here’s to creating consciously amidst the bursting colors of the changing landscape and alongside the devoted and passionate community that grows with us.

Circa 1971: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer & His Family Foundation Circa 1971 presents exceptional prints and limited editions from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer & His Family Foundation and offers an intimate portrait of American art at a pivotal cultural moment. Organized by Courtney Gilbert, Assistant Director and Curator, and Jennifer Wells Green, Executive Director, in consultation with Sun Valley Center for the Arts (now SVMoA) founder Glenn Janss, this exhibition commemorates the museum’s 55th anniversary by returning to the artistic landscape of its origins. More than a retrospective glance, Circa 1971 invites visitors to immerse themselves in the aesthetic innovations and cultural conversations that animated the American art world at the moment of SVMoA’s founding. The exhibition reveals how these artists, working through diverse practices and philosophies, collectively shaped the visual language of their time. UNBELIEVABLY FLORAL The lasting beauty of Fauxliage flowers by Lori Williams

Six years ago on Mother’s Day, Suzanne Long was working in her garden when she began thoughtfully contemplating the mounds of plastic containers and the water usage that gardening demanded. Suzanne also pondered the beautiful bouquet her family had given her that morning, which would eventually wilt and need to be tossed away. She knew that there was an abundance of faux plants and flowers that could offer a better alternative, but was there room to grow a timeless brand? That question nurtured a budding idea. Long grew up in the Valley, and at the age of 12, she lost her mother, Ellen Fisher, to breast cancer. Fisher was a brilliant and beautiful woman who impressed upon her children that the world is a garden of possibilities. Long eventually left the Valley at 18, with no plans of ever returning to a place that was linked to so much sadness for her. She devoted 30 years to her corporate career as an executive, with the last six of those spent cultivating Fauxliage, a business that would become a tribute to love, loss, and legacy. svpn-mag.com

COMMUNITY & CULTURE

Fauxliage plants and flowers are everything except real, and feature an unmatched botanical accuracy sourced from elite artificial flower manufacturers. Long’s strategic vision and passion for plants led her to create pop-ups and an e-commerce site. With the community’s exuberant reaction, she opened a store in Ketchum in late 2025. It quickly became less about selling the highest quality and most realistic artificial flowers and plants, and more about bringing timeless beauty and joy to people’s lives. Many contemporary premium faux flower and plant manufacturers use polyester-blend coatings and real-touch polymers, allowing them to produce a product with the hand-feel of living plants. The results mimic nature by capturing minute details like leaf veins, nuanced colors, hand-painted gradation, and the faint, fresh coolness of organic petal texture, all without the need for light, water, or intense care. “I went to market after market, literally touching thousands of flowers to find the perfect real-touch material, which is virtually indistinguishable from real plants, down to the gentle flex and feel of the stem,” says Long. A large majority of her products can also be set in water to creatively mix real and faux stems. Fauxliage offers a large variety of individual floral stems, including customer’s favorites: peonies, ranunculus, and hellebores, as well as greenery stems. Maidenhair fern and snake are popular plants, as well as fiddle leaf fig and olive trees. Their most popular service is custom flower arrangements using vessels or vases that clients bring in or that are sourced by Fauxliage. Beyond custom designs, Fauxliage also offers event rentals for special occasions. “Bringing the business here has healed and anchored me in the town where I was born and raised in a new way,” says Long. “The community has embraced and encouraged me, and I am having so much fun.”  fauxliage.com 630 Sun Valley Road, Suite D101 Ketchum

GOLDEN EAGLE ESTATE

Where nature’s beauty converges with grand architecture and fine art

by Lauren Jones photography by Felisha Azevedo

Long before arriving at the front door of 121 Feather Lane, it becomes clear that this property soars beyond an architectural residence. The nearly 10-acre private estate is accessed by a winding road where the landscape sets the rhythm— water cascading over native rock, two quiet lakes reflecting the surrounding peaks, and open meadows framed by mature trees. It is a setting that feels distinctly Sun Valley, where the natural world is not simply admired but experienced every day. The arrival itself establishes the dialogue between art and landscape. Monumental Peter Woytuk bronze bulls stand guard near the entrance, their strength echoing the rugged terrain beyond. Beneath the porte-cochère, Allen C. Houser’s Sacred Rain Arrow commands the space with quiet confidence. The celebrated sculpture is more than a focal point; it serves as a transition between the wilderness outside and the carefully curated world within. Completed in a mountain modern vocabulary and extensively renovated in 2021, the 10,608-square-foot residence was conceived as both a home and a gallery. Interior designer Kelly Simpson approached the renovation with a svpn-mag.com

joyous flow, allowing architecture, furnishings, and artwork to exist in conversation rather than competition. Natural materials, expansive walls, and generous volumes create a backdrop where significant works can be appreciated without overwhelming the home itself. Throughout the residence, sculpture becomes part of the architecture. Long corridors terminate in carefully composed vignettes, drawing the eye toward individual works while creating moments of pause along the home’s circulation. Every turn offers another perspective, another carefully framed composition. Rather than treating art as decoration, the collection is woven into the experience of moving through the house. That sculptural quality continues outside with rock formations carved by flowing water that meandering beneath towering evergreens and distant mountain ridgelines that become living works of art. The relationship is intentional: organic forms found throughout the collection are mirrored by the landscape beyond the glass, blurring the distinction between curated and natural beauty.

One of the home’s defining gathering spaces centers around the powerful piece of artwork above the fireplace. Set against soaring timber beams and richly textured materials, Scholder’s painting anchors the room while reflecting the American West’s layered cultural history. It is a space equally suited for quiet evenings by the fire or lively conversations that continue long into the night. Entertaining is central to the home’s design. The 2021 renovation introduced a striking climate-controlled glass wine room that functions as an architectural jewel within the residence. Equal parts cellar and exhibition space, it reflects the same appreciation for craftsmanship found throughout the property. Nearby, a chef ’s kitchen, butler’s pantry, private library, fitness room, game room, and intimate wine cave support a lifestyle that is both gracious and unpretentious. Yet, it is often the quieter moments that define the experience of living here. Morning light filtering across the lakes. The constant sound of water moving over stone. Snow settling 68

Sun Valley has always attracted people who appreciate beauty— not only in the mountains, rivers, and changing light, but also in craftsmanship, creativity, and thoughtful design. At the Golden Eagle Estate, these qualities converge. Architecture frames the landscape, art reflects the landscape, and the landscape ultimately becomes the true work of art. 

On a road less taken, between Bald Mountain and Mahoney Butte, sits Greenhorn Cabin. When the founder of Farmer Payne Architects, Scott Payne, was asked to craft a residential respite in the hidden hillsides of the gulch, he knew this project would be special. Here, tranquility and the wild converse, inspiring the residence to speak the same language. “For the home, we used a native natural palette of regional stone and wood, steel, and reclaimed timber for a timeless taste,” says Payne. “By adding floor-to-ceiling glass walls we brought modernity while emphasizing the landscape beyond.” “We’re trying to build the very best version of our client’s dream with every project,” says Director of Design and Associate Architect, Aaron Belzer. “That really comes down to us using craftspeople who build amazing homes and also have decades of experience building in this unique area.” Partnering with Lloyd Construction, they erected the residential gem in the svpn-mag.com

hills. Ian Sundby, partner and head of construction operations at Lloyd Construction, says, “It makes things fun when people put real thought into their craft and solve problems collaboratively. That’s what this project was built from.” Sundby describes the impact of the home’s rough, textural elements that seamlessly interface to create intentional spaces that feel effortless. This theme of uninterrupted design begins from the paver-to-fieldstone transitions that lead directly to the residence’s entryway. Owners are greeted by a monolithic front door that swings open on a concealed axis, its jamb and sill flush with the stone and reclaimed timber. The feeling is of entering a fortress, designed with fluidity. The spacious downstairs holds the secondary rooms, including a mud room with lockers, a private den, and a wine room. Consider it the gateway to the crown jewel of the home. The upstairs welcomes one into a light-filled dining room, kitchen, living room, and wet bar with spectacular views towards Greenhorn Gulch and Bald Mountain to the west. Both expansive and intimate, the main floor is designed for dining, lounging, entertaining, and eventually retreating into the primary suite, where owner’s have private access to the outdoor pool and hot tub. 78

“Set on a north-facing slope, we wanted to ensure that the main living space allowed as much light into the structure as possible,” says Belzer. By implementing rooftop decks and terraces, they created more livable outdoor space on the hillside lot. A custom poured concrete hearth acts as a bridge between the interior and exterior, to be enjoyed during breezy summer nights or a snowy sunrise. Interior design was done in collaboration with Jennifer Hoey from Suede Studio, who combined sleek and practical features allowing for casual yet distinctly refined mountain living. Note the interior wood vertical cladding, originally reclaimed snow fencing, to bring a natural weathered look that reflects the seasonality of Sun Valley.

By blending reclaimed wood walls with oak flooring and cabinetry, the home offers a grounded experience punctuated by green accents in the upholstery and natural textures for a feeling of harmony with the landscape. To honor the owners’ art collection, they designed spaces with consideration to their existing works of art as well as space to place new works throughout the home. An “art box” was created for a floating piece of art to hang between the living room and the dining room, serving as a breathtaking divider. After the home was complete, Farmer Payne Architects partnered with the Sun Valley Museum of Art and the owners to host a fundraiser for the museum. “Watching people tour the house and look at the artwork at the same time allowed us to see the house svpn-mag.com

more sculpturally…as living art,” says Payne. The quietude of the home is reflected in both its location and design, a sanctum set into Greenhorn Gulch that seems to appear from the landscape rather than descend upon it. BYLA Landscape Architects are responsible for meticulously considering the surrounding environment, guiding the wild terrain to complement the home’s architectural lines. “Working with BYLA, we were very careful from day one to create a residence with limited disturbance,” says Sundby. “We worked with tight constraints on what we were allowed to touch on the property, so that we could protect the native sagebrush fields, aspen trees, and seasonal creek.” Payne says that the sightlines inside are designed around the ever-changing landscape, from the rolling hills to steep peaks, offering an indoor experience that gives way to the beauty outside. Rare gems are formed over time through elemental alignment. Similarly, the Greenhorn Cabin gem was crafted with intention— shaped by artistry and technique between architects, builders, interior designers, and landscape architects. The result is a rarity designed to stand the test of time. 

WHERE MOUNTAINS MEET THE MUSIC Stanley’s iconic dance hall is reimagined 86

STANLEY

by Lori Williams photos by Bryan Rupp Photography

For over 60 years, Mountain Village Resort (MVR) has been an anchor in the Stanley community, evolving from a small summer outpost into a year-round, all-inclusive destination. Their 61-room lodge, restaurant, saloon, dance hall, mercantile, service station, campground, and private hot springs operate as a communal heart for convening and celebrating. Locally owned and operated for over 12 years by an Idaho-born and -raised couple, Russell and Mandy Clark, MVR prides itself on customer service, lodge comforts, and a rollicking good time at hosted events. For over a decade, the Velvet Falls Dance Hall has been an economic engine for all-season entertainment and events. As the resort’s centerpiece, the rustic venue with its legendary stage and full-service bar is famous for the indoor-outdoor flow of summer concerts, festivals, and special events spilling out onto the expansive concert svpn-mag.com

grounds and lawn. This past spring, the dance hall received a marvelous new upgrade, ratcheting the resort’s high-country hospitality up another notch. “Incentive for a remodel came from the need for new dance hall restrooms to accommodate heavier traffic,” says Mandy. “But anyone who knows Russell knows he goes big on everything, so the project grew substantially.” While restrooms were being renovated, they also added new catering and storage rooms. They enclosed the patio to replace the large white tented area, adding heaters and commercial garage doors and windows for more seamless merging to and from the dance hall to the concert grounds. The crowning upgrade features the addition of a second-floor three-king suite, with an adjoining VIP balcony patio overlooking the concert grounds and outdoor stage, providing breathtaking views of the Sawtooth Mountains, Valley Creek, and the Salmon River. The apartment suite celebrates classic mountain hospitality with warm wood, inviting textiles, and plenty of rustic charm with a musical-décor nod to its stage presence. In addition to public entertainment, the dance hall is frequently used for weddings, receptions, retreats, and family reunions. Because the new addition is an extension of the venue, interested parties should know that live music plays most Friday and Saturday nights throughout the year, but the suite and balcony will also be advertised as an event/lodging package, depending on the event. “The possibilities for use are endless,” says Mandy. “It’s truly a unique new space, unlike anything else in Stanley.”  mountainvillage.com 88

Having called the Wood River Valley home for 50 years and spent over three decades in local real estate, I have developed deep expertise across every market sector—representing buyers and sellers on everything from iconic Main Street venues to 8,000-acre ranches. Over my 13 years with Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties, I’m proud to have closed over 250 transactions totaling more than $111 million in sales volume, a track record built alongside the exceptional support of our marketing and operations team. My commitment to this community goes well beyond property. Beyond 18 years in construction and 10 summers commercial fishing in Alaska, I spent 30 years with the Sun Valley Ski Patrol providing medical training, helped raise $500,000 to build the Hailey Skate Park, and continue to volunteer during wildland fires to support EMS communications. Most recently, I brokered a milestone transaction expanding the Howard Preserve to Riverside Drive, fulfilling a 20-year goal for the City of Bellevue and the Wood River Land Trust to preserve our valley's natural heritage.

STYLE DIAL In the kitchen, meals become moments. By integrating cozy nooks, luxurious finishes, and seamless seating, you can build meaningful memories in the space where we gather the most in. Discover how local designers bring their innovative, functional, and creative designs to the heart of the home.

FAMILY AFFAIR The best kitchens aren’t designed as standalone spaces. We think about how they connect to the dining room, the living spaces beyond, and the views outside. We think about the moments that happen there every day: friends gathered around the island or children helping prepare dinner. Thoughtful circulation in the kitchen draws people together without feeling crowded and becomes an anchor for how the rest of the home is experienced.

INTERIOR DESIGN

HEART OF THE HOME We were hired to furnish this home when construction was already under way. During the first site visit we saw some great ways to improve the kitchen layout, including the seating area. Although the size of the kitchen is large, it felt small and underutilized, so we reworked the cabinet layout and added seating. A standard countertop overhang is 12” deep, but we made it longer with custom solid oak legs for support. Plus, we added a pop of blue and stunning pendant lighting in an otherwise all-white space.

LISTENING TO THE COMMUNITY Health, housing, and access to care are the highest priorities by Joy Prudek, Public Relations & Communications Business Manager, St. Luke’s Wood River

Every three years, St. Luke’s asks community members an important question: What are the biggest challenges affecting health and well-being in Blaine County? The answers help shape the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), a process that combines community surveys, interviews, focus groups, and health data to better understand local needs and guide future action. The recently released 2026 assessment identifies three top priorities for Blaine County: behavioral health, housing, and access to care. “The goal of this work is to listen carefully to our community and better understand the challenges people are facing,” says Sarah Seppa, director of community engagement at St. Luke’s Wood River. “Partnering with organizations that are deeply connected to the communities we serve helps ensure a more complete and representative picture of local health needs.” This year’s assessment was conducted through a collaboration among St. Luke’s, South Central Public Health District, and Family Health Services. Together, we are helping broaden participation and bring more community voices into the process. While the findings highlight serious challenges, Seppa says they also reveal something equally important: the strong partnerships already working to improve community health. “What stands out is how interconnected these issues are,” Seppa says. “Housing, behavioral health, and access to care don’t exist in isolation. When someone is struggling with one of those challenges, it often affects many other areas of their life as well.” 146

svpn-mag.com

WELLNESS

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONTINUES TO BE A PRIORITY Behavioral health emerged as the highest-ranked priority in Blaine County. Community members identified concerns ranging from anxiety and depression to substance misuse, suicide prevention, and challenges accessing mental health services. Residents also described difficulties finding timely appointments and culturally responsive care, particularly for Spanish-speaking families. “Mental health continues to be one of the strongest themes we hear in community conversations,” Seppa says. “People are looking for more access to services, more support for families and youth, and greater awareness of resources that already exist in our community.” The assessment also points to progress that has been made over the past three years. St. Luke’s and community partners have supported counseling scholarships, suicide-prevention initiatives, youth well-being programs, school-based support services, and

community education efforts. Thanks to St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, more than 1,300 counseling sessions were funded and 262 patients were assisted through the counseling scholarship program that took place October 1 to June 30 in this fiscal year alone. “These challenges are significant,” Seppa says, “but so is the commitment of the organizations working together to address them.”

HOUSING AND HEALTH ARE CLOSELY CONNECTED Housing ranked second among community priorities and was repeatedly identified as one of the most significant factors affecting overall health and well-being. Community members described the financial strain created by high housing costs, long commutes, and limited housing options. svpn-mag.com

147

“Housing came through loud and clear in community conversations,” Seppa says. “Many residents talked about the stress housing costs create and how that affects everything from mental health to a family’s ability to afford healthcare, food, transportation, and childcare.” The assessment reflects what many local organizations have seen first-hand: stable housing is a critical foundation for good health. St. Luke’s has long been engaged in community efforts related to housing, working alongside local governments, the Blaine County Housing Authority, Blaine County Charitable Fund, and other partners. The organization has supported housing stability efforts, transitional housing initiatives, and referrals to housing resources for community members experiencing housing insecurity. St. Luke’s and the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation have also invested heavily in workforce housing solutions for its 148

svpn-mag.com

employees. Efforts have included partnerships with ARCH Community Housing Trust, the Wood River Community Housing Trust, master leases of mobile homes and condominiums, support for tiny-home developments, and other creative housing strategies designed to help healthcare workers continue living and working in the community. St. Luke’s and the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation continue to actively explore additional opportunities. A community with a healthy housing ecosystem has a spectrum of housing programs and services that support unhoused, those in transitional housing, and those at risk of losing their housing. “Healthcare organizations can’t solve housing challenges alone,” Seppa says. “But we can be a committed partner and help support solutions that strengthen both our workforce and our community.”

WELLNESS

ACCESS TO CARE GOES BEYOND THE EXAM ROOM Access to care was identified as the third-highest priority and includes much more than the availability of doctors and clinics. Community conversations highlighted transportation challenges, insurance barriers, provider shortages, and the need for culturally and linguistically appropriate services. “Access to care means more than having a clinic nearby,” Seppa says. “Transportation, language, insurance coverage, and the ability to navigate available resources all influence whether someone can get the care they need when they need it.” One example of a successful local partnership is Family Health Services in Bellevue. The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation provided significant support to help establish the clinic, and it, along with St. Luke’s Health System, has continued to provide financial assistance and support for services, including dental equipment. It plays an important role in expanding access to healthcare for residents of the South Valley, many of whom are part of the workforce that helps power businesses, schools, public services, and the broader economy throughout the region. The assessment also highlights transportation partnerships, community outreach, resource navigation services, and bilingual support efforts that help connect residents with care and other essential services. St. Luke’s is also leveraging technology to

help address access challenges through on-demand virtual care and a TytoClinic at the Hailey Public Library, giving community members another convenient way to connect with providers and receive care without leaving the Valley.

TURNING FINDINGS INTO ACTION The CHNA is designed to do more than identify challenges. It provides a roadmap for action and collaboration. Over the coming months, St. Luke’s and its partners will use the findings to develop implementation strategies focused on the community’s highest priorities. The goal is not only to address immediate needs, but also to build on the partnerships and programs that are already making a difference. For Seppa, one of the most encouraging findings is the willingness of organizations across Blaine County to work together. “We have strong partnerships, engaged community leaders, and residents who care deeply about the future of this valley,” she says. “The assessment helps us align those efforts so we can focus resources where they can have the greatest impact.” Ultimately, she says, the process comes back to listening. “The CHNA isn’t about St. Luke’s deciding what’s important,” Seppa says. “It’s about hearing directly from the community, understanding the realities people are experiencing, and working alongside our partners to create healthier communities for everyone.”  svpn-mag.com

WELLNESS

YOUTH SPORTS RECOVERY The CENTERED edge prioritizes physical and mental wellbeing

It is difficult for talented youth athletes to make it through a promising high school career in any discipline. One knee injury or one concussion can be the start of the end. Youth sports injuries are prevalent, as is the toll they take on physical and mental health. There are many reasons for this, including yearround training and early specialization, demineralized and processed foods, high inflammatory processes in the body due to toxic load, and high levels of stress and cortisol. Understanding the full picture of recovery can make a difference between a fulfilling career that carries on to success in college or beyond. Sports injuries can impact social connections, travel during a sports career, or even end a career prematurely. All of this can cause disappointment and defeat, having never realized one’s true potential and all the amazingness that comes with that.

THE INJURY REALITY Youth injury rates rise steadily with age and competition level, and overuse injuries are especially common among adolescents pushing year-round schedules. If an athlete makes it through the journey injury-free, there’s also the risk (especially in endurance athletes) of burnout and autoimmune problems, along with chronic digestive issues. There’s performance anxiety as well, which can be crippling. Research following young athletes post-injury has found elevated rates of chronic pain, activity avoidance, and clinical anxiety that can persist for years. A sprained ankle or a torn ligament isn’t just a physical setback; it can shake a person’s identity, routine, and confidence all at once. At CENTERED, we offer solutions to all and we have an incredibly high success rate of getting athletes, particularly youth athletes at the peak of their careers, back to normal and better than ever.

Athletic identity runs deep for young people, and when an injury sidelines them, they often lose more than playing time. It can be a loss of an athlete’s social circle, a sense of purpose, and a healthy routine that provides a daily anchor and a sense of self and motivation.

svpn-mag.com

151

WELLNESS

We help young athletes strengthen their immunity and restore the cellular energy they need to step back onto the field without hesitation or fear. into a difficult cycle. A nervous athlete is more injury-prone; an injured athlete becomes more anxious. Breaking that cycle requires addressing both sides at once. We can help reset the nervous system from competitive anxiety to competitive flow. We’ve got the solutions.

THE CENTERED APPROACH

RECOVERY IS NOT JUST PHYSICAL Traditional recovery plans focus on the body: rest, rehab, strength work, and a gradual return to play. That’s one approach—but it’s not ours. Athletic identity runs deep for young people, and when an injury sidelines them, they often lose more than playing time. It can be a loss of an athlete’s social circle, a sense of purpose, and a healthy routine that provides a daily anchor and a sense of self and motivation. Effective recovery has to account for that loss, not just damaged tissue. This is where a whole-athlete approach makes the difference. First, we need to restore function to systems: neuromuscular, neurological, and metabolic. Physical therapy (PT) is only a fraction of the work needed until that happens. Once function is restored, recovery accelerates and PT becomes effective, and without it, weakness and susceptibility can occur. Once function is restored, a person can return to play with confidence and less fear of re-injury. Confidence in the function of the body and mind meaningfully speeds and strengthens recovery outcomes.

THE HIDDEN INJURY: MENTAL PERFORMANCE AND ANXIETY Injury isn’t the only source of stress for young athletes. Competitive anxiety, performance pressure, and fear of disappointment or failure show up constantly, whether or not there’s an injury involved. Somatic anxiety describes the physical symptoms of stress like a racing heart or tight chest before competition, and is directly linked to higher injury rates. This can cause injury and often feeds 152

At CENTERED, we built our youth and adult sports recovery program around the body and mind recovering together. This builds maximum efficiency in neuroemotional ability to prepare for competition, and in proprioception to create stability in the body. The flow state is our goal. Our approach combines restoration of muscular dysfunction with neurological training, tissue regeneration, and mitochondrial function designed specifically for young athletes navigating it all. We go beyond recovery that simply clears young athletes for competition. We help them build strength and neuromuscular engagement to regulate stress responses, turning their performance anxiety into enthusiasm for competition. We also help strengthen their immunity and restore the cellular energy they need to step back onto the field without hesitation or fear. That means fewer setbacks, a mental edge, and an ability to thrive to full potential. Whether you are a young athlete or know an athlete who is currently sidelined, has never fully recovered from an injury or pain, is working through performance anxiety, or simply wants to get ahead of the physical and mental demands of competitive sport, CENTERED is here. We excel in helping build stronger and steadier athletes from the ground-up. Our results speak for themselves, and we love chalking up CENTERED successes. 

Stephen Wilkes photographs time. Not the moment a shutter conventionally freezes, but its passage: a day, an era, or a season pressed into a single image. During the month of August, Wilkes had his first solo exhibition at Gilman Contemporary. His work reflects on the United States’ 250th anniversary, tracing a nation in motion across urban spaces, vast stretches of land, abandoned industrial complexes, and abstracted landscapes. In each image, his true subject is time. The exhibition unfolds across three distinct series, three photographic processes, and three ways of understanding the passing of time. Bethlehem Steel uses traditional photography, stilling a moment in the silence of a oncebustling factory. Tapestries dissolves and layers landscape into expressionistic abstractions woven into cloth. Day to Night, his best-known series, is a carefully orchestrated puzzle that resolves a full day into a single frame. Bethlehem Steel, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was once a symbol of American industrial strength. Its beams raised the skyscrapers of New York; its steel became the nation’s bridges and warships. The plant employed generations of Pennsylvanians whose legacy is preserved in the bones of the vast machinery that now lies dormant. Originally a three-day assignment for Archaeology Magazine, the project became, in Wilkes’ words, “a two- to three-year passion.” His sense of light and composition renders the complicated history of industrialization with sensitivity and reverence.

“I photographed the decay of a dinosaur. It was a vast sculpture of wreckage in deafening silence, about to vanish into memory. The dinosaur was a massive disintegrating monument to America’s industrial civilization.”

In Huge Toolshed, light filters through raised windows into an empty cathedral of industry. A lone figure is dwarfed by the sun-filled doorway. The machinery is gone, and all that remains is the echo of the human and mechanical life that once filled the space. Together, the Bethlehem Steel photographs hold open a door that the country has closed, revealing the humanity of those who worked and lived in the shadow of the factory.

FINE ARTS Blue Trees by Stephen Wilkes available as commissioned– handwoven tapestry or archival pigment print 51.5” x 39” edition of 4

Where Bethlehem Steel holds still, Tapestries sets the image in motion. The works are made spontaneously and instinctively, through in-camera multiple exposures captured in just four to eight seconds. Layered, expressionistic, and alive with texture, they hold the emotional residue of a moment rather than its literal truth: the surface of water, a winter morning, the gesture of a tree. At Gilman Contemporary, the series is presented as commissioned hand-woven tapestries, transforming the photographs into physical textile, the image remade by hand. In Blue Trees, a canopy breaks apart into thousands of marks of color, reds and golds drifting through a haze of blue, less a forest than the memory of one. The abstraction becomes a moment of pure expression; the layers ask to be felt before they are read.

In Blue Trees, a canopy breaks apart into thousands of marks of color, reds and golds drifting through a haze of blue, less a forest than the memory of one.

Where Tapestries dissolves a moment in seconds, Day to Night compresses 24 to 36 hours into a single frame with exacting control. Wilkes stands transfixed at a single vantage point, photographing the details of one place and producing more than a thousand individual frames. From these slivers, a seamless image emerges. “Day to Night is a melding of science and art together,” says Wilkes. “Part of what I do is think about the concept of time and our relationship to time, even on a scientific level, how Einstein describes the space-time continuum. Using Photoshop, I could merge not just a single image but hundreds of images together, and have those images tell a story… capturing time throughout the day and into the night.” In Four Seasons, View of Central Park, Summer, day travels from east to west: from the orange and red of sunrise over the East River, through the blue afternoon sky where the sun falls onto the green swath of the park, to fireworks bursting on the Hudson. Wilkes leans into his painterly instincts, drawing on the traditions of the Hudson River School and the Luminists. svpn-mag.com

In Sandhill Cranes, Rowe Sanctuary, Nebraska, thousands of birds gather on the Platte River as day turns to night around them, the air alive with beating wings. Rowe Sanctuary is a staging ground for the spring migration, a hub of cranes endlessly coming and going. Part of a body of work Wilkes made for the National Geographic Society’s Year of the Bird, the image sets the birds in flight, on the plain, and in the water, echoing the movement of the sun over New York City. 162

“Day to Night has become a synthesis of everything I love about the medium. At its core is the joy I take in the act of seeing, so that you get to feel what I felt, the awe I feel when I am in these places,” shares Wilkes. Across all three series, Wilkes gives the nation back to itself in motion: building and vanished, still and teeming, caught in the long light of its own day. 

SCENIC ROUTE Artist Frances Ashforth on the wonder of slowing down For her upcoming exhibition, Scenic Route: Unstoppable Beauty, Frances Ashforth reflects on a lifelong fascination with landscapes and the memories they hold. Drawing inspiration from a lifetime of exploring wild spaces, her work distills the feeling of being immersed in nature rather than documenting a specific place. In this conversation with Hemmings Gallery, Ashforth discusses the origins of her work, her enduring connection to the Wood River Valley, and why slowing down has never felt more important. HEMMINGS GALLERY: The title of this exhibition,

Scenic Route: Unstoppable Beauty, evokes both movement and wonder. What inspired it? FRANCES ASHFORTH: I’ve always been drawn to the scenic route—the back roads, the slower path, and the unexpected detour. Growing up, my parents would often say, “Let’s get lost today!” That simple invitation shaped the way I experience the world. We traveled with a stack of well-worn paper maps, looking for dotted lines, unpaved roads, and places we hadn’t seen before. Those adventures taught me that beauty often reveals itself when you’re willing to slow down and wander. That spirit has stayed with me throughout my life and is at the heart of this exhibition.

HEMMINGS GALLERY: Travel and landscape seem deeply

connected to your work. How did those early experiences influence you as an artist? FRANCES ASHFORTH: My childhood was filled with camping trips—from the White Mountains of New Hampshire to Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy, the Everglades, and eventually a cross-country trip to the American West. Those experiences planted a lifelong curiosity about landscapes and how they shape us. Even today, I still love studying paper maps, topographic drawings, and geology books, looking for hints of the history and cultures associated with a particular area. HEMMINGS GALLERY: The landscapes in your paintings

aren’t always literal depictions of specific places. How do they develop? FRANCES ASHFORTH: Every piece, whether it’s a drawing, painting, or print, begins with an actual memory of being somewhere. It could be from a hike, a bike ride, time on the river, or simply driving through an open landscape. But once I’m in the studio, those memories begin to overlap. Horizon lines shift, colors change, and other places I’ve experienced gradually find their way into the painting. HEMMINGS GALLERY: You often speak about memory.

What role does it play in your creative process? FRANCES ASHFORTH: Memory softens and transforms what we see. I’m interested in that space where vivid moments gradually become layered, blurred memories over time. Light, weather, changing seasons, geology, and even the feeling of moving through a place all become intertwined. My paintings reflect those accumulated experiences. They’re really landscapes of memory. svpn-mag.com

167

HEMMINGS GALLERY: Much of your

recent work is inspired by Idaho. What continues to draw you back to these places? FRANCES ASHFORTH: The Wood River Valley, the Snake River Plain, and the Salmon River have become constant sources of inspiration. There’s an openness here that’s difficult to describe—a sense of scale, changing light, and geological history that continually surprises me. The more time I spend in these landscapes, the more they stay with me. HEMMINGS GALLERY: What

questions came up for you when you were working on this show? FRANCES ASHFORTH: I’m interested in how we see ourselves within a landscape. How quickly do we move through it? What do we notice or overlook? And perhaps most importantly, how can we develop such a deep sense of place that we’re willing to protect it? I think the landscapes we love shape who we are, and with that love comes a responsibility to care for them. HEMMINGS GALLERY: What do

you hope viewers carry with them after experiencing Scenic Route: Unstoppable Beauty? FRANCES ASHFORTH: Our world moves at an extreme pace and my study of land, water, and sky helps me find balance on a daily basis. My hope is that my work will help us remember to slow down, to take in all that nature has to offer— especially its vast, unstoppable beauty. I am grateful that the outdoor spaces I’ve experienced continue to haunt me, in the very best way.  168

Tony Foster Small Worlds

FINE ARTS | NOW SHOWING

This solo exhibition by British watercolorist Tony Foster features a collection of small original watercolors. Usually working ‘en plein air’ in some of the world’s wildest places, Foster creates small watercolors on site, then returns to his studio to produce his larger paintings. For this exhibition, however, Foster has reversed his usual convention, distilling a selection of larger paintings made over the course of 40 years into smaller paintings.

Alongside each subject, an accompanying “souvenir” is framed alongside the watercolor, representing what Foster considers to be the threat to that location’s survival. The paintings are a selection from the estimated 1,000 works Foster has completed over his lifetime—the favorite “small worlds” in which he has spent his life. svpn-mag.com

Don Nice Don Nice was a leading figure in American art who emerged in the early 1960s as one of the “new perceptual realists.” Raised in California’s San Joaquin Valley, his early experiences as a ranch hand and outdoorsman fostered a lifelong connection to the American landscape. Nice developed a distinctive style. Working in watercolor, oil, and sculpture depicting everyday American objects and iconic landscapes, Nice’s work explores the relationship between popular culture, nature, and the enduring character of American life.

Top right: Savoy Schoolhouse by Jim Westphalen archival pigment print 42” x 42” Edition of 5 (additional sizes available)

Gilman Contemporary presents two parallel solo exhibitions exploring the layered history of the American West. In Echoes on the Land, Jim Westphalen photographs the weathered remains of vanishing homesteads across the region. These structures once marked one of the most ambitious migrations in American history: settlers drawn west by the Homestead Act of 1862, promised 160 acres of land that was far from empty. The realities of homesteading proved harsher than the promise, and in the quiet decay of these structures, Westphalen honors the determination and sacrifice that shaped the land. That history is layered. The ground that homesteaders claimed had long been home to Indigenous nations, and westward expansion is inseparable from the displacement that came with it. These fading buildings stand on ground that holds both memory and loss, reminders that endurance and hardship have always shared the same earth. Shot on a vintage 4x5 camera paired with digital hardware, Westphalen’s images carry a painterly stillness, as if the buildings themselves are holding their breath. In seeking their quiet “souls,” he uncovers traces of long-ago labor and life. Echoes on the Land builds thoughtful monuments to a history that is neither simple nor finished. svpn-mag.com

Dana Hart-Stone Western Charms In Western Charms, Dana Hart-Stone creates colorful digital paintings from found vintage photographs, each composition repeating in rhythmic glimpses of everyday American lives. Raised in Montana, Hart-Stone draws on his own childhood spent exploring abandoned homesteads. The work is inspired not only by the settlers but also by the Indigenous people they displaced, particularly the geometry of gift-giving quilts and the textiles that hold collective memory. “My work comes from wandering the vast, history-rich countryside of eastern Montana as a child,” Hart-Stone says. “On those walks I found abandoned homesteads left with evidence of the pioneers who had settled there: cracked boots, torn lace curtains, rusted barbed wire. These objects suggested hard lives, and they left me wanting to know more.”

Hart-Stone adds, “One memory from that same childhood has stayed with me even longer. After a basketball tournament in my hometown, nine Native American women walked onto the court, each carrying a folded gifting star quilt, laid open across the painted lines for everyone to see. One by one, the winning coaches were invited out to choose a quilt as a gift from the home team community. The generosity of that moment, giving away something so beautiful, stayed with me.” About 40 years later, Hart-Stone started collecting vintage American vernacular photography, and that same curiosity returned. “I began making work from those brief clicks of the shutter, aimed at people simply going about their lives while building a nation,” he says. “The circular, repeating structures in this work trace back to that basketball court. It is, by nature, about unknown America.”

Frances Ashforth Scenic Route: Unstoppable Beauty

Hemmings Gallery presents Scenic Route: Unstoppable Beauty, a new solo exhibition by Frances Ashforth, an internationally exhibited artist whose work has been shown in the UK, Denmark, Ireland, and Canada. Ashforth creates spare yet evocative paintings and drawings inspired by the geography, geology, and interconnected habitats of the places she explores. For decades, she has immersed herself in the mountains, rivers, and expansive landscapes of the American West. For this latest body of work, Ashforth turns her attention to the Wood River Valley, the Snake River Plain, and the Salmon River. As an avid hiker, cyclist, and angler, she begins each series with careful research and countless hours spent walking trails, studying maps, and experiencing the land first-hand. Rather than documenting a specific location, her work transforms these encounters into layered memories, where shifting light, changing weather, and distant horizons merge into compositions that feel both deeply personal and universally familiar. Scenic Route: Unstoppable Beauty celebrates the rewards of taking the long way—of lingering, observing, and connecting with the natural world. “I’m grateful that the outdoor spaces I’ve experienced continue to haunt me in the very best way, reminding me to tread lightly and be an intentional steward of the land,” she says. Her work offers a quiet invitation to slow down and recognize that our deepest connections to the landscape often inspire our greatest responsibility to protect it. 182

All Heart by Jeremy Booth oil on canvas 60” x 48”

FINE ARTS | NOW SHOWING

Kentucky-based artist Jeremy Booth and Sun Valley artist Rudi Broschofsky offer a contemporary interpretation of the American West, blending tradition with bold, modern visual language. Booth captures the spirit of the Wild West through striking minimalism, distilling iconic cowboys and sweeping Western landscapes into powerful graphic compositions that evoke resilience, grit, and adventure. His distinctive work has been exhibited at both Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Broschofsky explores the intersection of representation and abstraction, merging Western imagery with the energy of Street Art. Using hand-cut stencils and layers of spray paint, his compositions shift with the viewer’s perspective— appearing abstract up-close before resolving into recognizable imagery from a distance. Raised in Broschofsky Galleries and serving as its director for more than two decades, his work reflects a lifelong immersion in both historic Western art and contemporary influences. Together, Booth and Broschofsky present two unique yet complementary perspectives on the modern West: one defined by bold simplicity and the other by layered complexity. Their fresh dialogue honors Western heritage while pushing its visual language into the present. Additional works by gallery artists will also be on display, including Bill Barrett, Duke Beardsley, Edward Curtis, Russell Chatham, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Billy Schenck, Kollabs, Theodore Villa, Andy Warhol, David Yarrow, and more.

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

231 N Main Street | Ketchum 208.726.5233 sawtoothclub.com

The Sawtooth Club

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops & ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials, and much more. In the bar, enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 16 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, flatiron steak bearnaise, rack of lamb, ribeye steak, butternut squash ravioli, Manchester Farms quail, BBQ baby back ribs, vegan noodle bowl, Wagyu beef meatloaf, pasta Portofino, smoked beef brisket burnt ends, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few. Much of our grilling is done over a live mesquite fire. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry and seafood.

Top to bottom: The front of the Sawtooth Club in a normal summer; Mesquite-grilled Idaho ruby red trout; summer view from the balcony patio.

With an award-winning wine list that complements the wonderful food, summer nights on the beautiful outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

The Cellar Pub

Head down the stairs and you’re instantly in one of Ketchum’s classic rites of passage—a traditional pub energy hit with the perfect pint of Guinness waiting at the bottom. The Cellar’s patio hums in summer, but inside is where the magic happens: locals, visitors, and ski bums packed around wooden tables, digging into Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or the legendary Old-Fashioned Bar Burger.

Top: Bangers & Mash Above: Interior of The Cellar Pub

Late-night? Even better. The full bar is stacked with draft beers and daily drink-and-shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia cover the walls, giving the whole place that lived‑in, good‑times‑happen‑here feel. Wander to the back and you’ll find booths made for storytelling, a free full‑size shuffleboard table that’s probably older than half the crowd, and a Big Buck Hunter arcade game. You don’t just leave The Cellar Pub with a full belly—you leave with a story.

Michel’s Christiania

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from former owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, you will enjoy French cuisine

that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s famous and extensive wine list.
