If I have learned anything during my career in media , it is that change is the only constant. What may seem like a disruption is actually an opportunity to evolve the story — and the storyteller. It is with this spirit that I step into my new role as Editor of Sun Valley Property News
Originally from Boulder, Colorado, I have chosen to become a student of the world having lived in California, Costa Rica, and Mexico. These places have introduced me to languages, histories, and cultures that have broadened my understanding, but at the core of it all is the theme of community. My career experiences include being an editorial assistant at Robb Report, the Features Editor at Iconic Life Magazine, and a contributing lifestyle writer for NUVO and Boulder Lifestyle. I am also a communications consultant designing marketing strategies and brand identities for businesses across industries. My obsession with design and architecture has led me to work on writing projects with Sotheby’s and the Corcoran Group. Most recently, I independently published a magazine based in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, that inspired me to step more fully into community-building through editorial storytelling. This is what brings me here, to the pages of SVPN.
LOOKING AHEAD, TOGETHER
The history of SVPN stands strong as an award-winning magazine that reaches thousands of readers across the Wood River Valley each year. From Stanley to the Sun Valley Resort, there has been no shortage of compelling stories that cover dining, wellness, real estate, outdoor adventure, festivals, art, film, and so much more. Through these stories, I have learned that the Valley is a unique place for being a world-famous mountain resort town with a culture that is kept alive all year long by the full- and part-time residents. I have heard there is no “off-season” in the Valley—just a different way to experience the changing seasons!
Here, generations of families carry on traditions as well as new arrivals looking to begin their legacy. What remains at the center is the meaning of place, where a beautifully built life begins. This new chapter of SVPN is a return to the pillars that the magazine was founded on; real estate, interior design, iconic architecture, fine art, and elevated living. At the center is the home, and what lives beyond it is the abundant and captivating culture across the Valley that we will continue to feature in every issue.
I hope you enjoy this June issue that represents the beginning of summer and the variety of events, creatives, and civic leaders in town. There is no shortage of experiences, from the beauty of Ballet Sun Valley’s world-class performances to climate strategist Aimée Christensen’s annual Forum as well as the highly-anticipated Sun Valley Policy Forum bringing influential speakers to their stage.
As we move forward, I am happy to be joined by the same enduring team, including the previous editor, Sabina Dana Plasse, who will work her magic in client services and local storytelling. My role is to curate our content through incredible imagery and thoughtful articles. What is clear is that there is no one better to tell the stories of the Valley than you, the community. Lord Andrew Roberts of Belgravia is a distinguished historian and author of 20 acclaimed books translated into 28 languages. His works include Churchill: Walking with Destiny and Napoleon: A Life. He co-authored Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare 1945 to Ukraine with General David Petraeus. Roberts is a visiting fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution, a professor at King’s College London, and a fellow of leading literary and historical societies.

General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, Ret.) joined KKR in 2013 and serves as a Partner and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute. A former four-star general, he commanded forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and later served as CIA Director. He holds a PhD from Princeton and has taught at several institutions. Petraeus is also a bestselling author, board member, and advisor with numerous military honors and international recognitions.

Pacific Northwest Ballet headlines Ballet Sun Valley’s summer season

Few places offer the magic of a big-city arts experience in a spectacular mountain setting. This summer, the town of Sun Valley will again become a cultural hub with world-class performances presented by Ballet Sun Valley (BSV). During the weekend of June 27-28 at the Sun Valley Pavilion, you can experience an open-air stage where golden daylight shifts to dusk while exceptional dancers dazzle under the spotlight.
Kicking off this summer’s cultural season, BSV will present Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) in two distinct and compelling programs. Framed by Sun Valley’s breathtaking landscape, this inspiring atmosphere creates a sense of connection between the artists and audience.
For more than 50 years, PNB has been pushing the boundaries of dance. Based in Seattle, a city known for innovation, they bring that same spirit to the arts as well. Their diverse repertoire features groundbreaking works by a wide range of choreographers, each contributing to the evolution of the art form, which will be on full display this summer in a program designed to energize and inspire.
Ballet Sun Valley’s Summer Festival will take audiences on a journey through the decades, from the 1960s to the present, including a World Premiere. The program opens with George Balanchine’s seminal 1967 work, Rubies from Jewels, which celebrates the energy and vivacity of New York City as well as Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs (1982), set to the music of the iconic Frank Sinatra to evoke nostalgia as it moves through the natural evolution of time.

The BSV Summer Festival offers a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth of PNB’s artistry and depth of talent, in what feels like an entire season of ballet in just two nights.

Red Angels by Ulysses Dove (1994) is a thrilling work that showcases the dancers’ athleticism, power, and astonishing speed. Additional works from the 2000s and beyond will round out the two-day festival.
In the true spirit of innovation, the highlight of the Festival will debut a World Premiere from Jessica Lang, Resident Choreographer at PNB.This new work, a co-commission between PNB and BSV, was inspired by Lang’s weeklong residency at The Community Library’s Hemingway House, in collaboration with the Library’s writerin-residence program.

From the trout-filled Big Wood River to the peaks of Bald Mountain, Sun Valley immerses locals and visitors in its wild abundance. It offers athletes, artists, and adventurers of every age unforgettable outdoor experience alongside essential food and water sources.
The Valley provides both inspiration and security.
“People rely on nature to produce our food, provide shelter, and sustain our everyday lives,” says Aimée Christensen, founder of the Sun Valley Forum. “Yet, these systems are under great threat. The Forum showcases solutions across finance and business, science and innovation, media and culture to build partnerships and mobilize resources to protect and restore nature.”
Christensen founded the Forum in 2015, drawing on her background as a global policy, business, and impact strategist, and her work with Google, the United Nations, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Her mission is to advance local resilience in the face of wildfires, shifting snowfall and drought, and preserving the clear skies and snowy slopes that the regional economy depends on.
Now in its tenth year, the Forum moves to Sun Valley Resort for the first time, creating a campus for empowering presentations, workshops, film screenings, and networking all set against the resort’s scenic backdrop. In between forging lasting relationships and potential collaborations, guests can visit a regenerative farm and tour a local net-zero home.

This year’s renowned speakers include ocean advocate Philippe Cousteau and supermodel and UN Environment Programme ambassador Amber Valletta. The CEOs of National Audubon Society, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and National Forest Foundation will also take the Forum stage. The young leaders of tomorrow include Emmy Scott, the Executive Director of Earth Guardians, and Pooja Tilvawala, Founder & Executive Director of Youth Climate Collaborative.
Christensen emphasizes how the Forum is scaling the solutions we need for more resilient economies and healthy communities. The event highlights new business models, technologies, and finance solutions to secure our energy and food systems critical to the global economy.

Regeneration is top-of-mind at the resort. They have solar panels, composting systems, and innovative ways to reduce food waste. During the Forum, guests can access public water filtration stations to help reduce bottled water consumption.
LOOKING TO OUR ROOTS
In the spirit of America’s 250th birthday, the Forum looks to the Forest Reserve Act of 1891, which empowered presidents to protect land as national forests, as a foundation for today’s conservation work. This year, they partnered with the National Forest Foundation to restore Bald Mountain’s beetle-kill and droughtdamaged forest. Future Roots, born from Christensen’s Sun Valley Institute for Resilience, is presenting its revolving loan fund supporting local farmers while Idaho Rivers United and the Shoshone Bannock Tribe will address the push to restore Idaho’s salmon populations.
“From the oceans to the forests, our public lands and waters are being celebrated on our stage at this moment of the nation’s 250th anniversary. And nature is non-partisan,” says Christensen.
TURNING DREAMS INTO DOLLARS
Money may not grow on trees, but the Forum is built to move dollars and create lasting coalitions that benefit both people and the land. Past impact includes growing Washington State’s urban heat and forestry work from a $500K seed effort to a $16.6 million investment, sparked by insights from the Forum speaker Jeff Goodell. Another success was the creation of a campaign to remove fossil fuels from Screen Actors Guild pension funds that was championed by Mark Ruffalo and Jane Fonda and exclusively covered by Bloomberg. “That’s the magic,” says Christensen, “when people connect and make something big happen together.”
The Forum puts power into the hands of people to transform local and global communities through scalable solutions in a climate-changing world.

Behind the scenes of a Sun Valley wedding experience

Curating a memorable wedding experience is at the heart of Alpen Joy Events. Tiffany Berger, the owner and founder, is always ready for a challenge and approaches all weddings with a tailored approach to reflect her client’s vision.
“The creative process for a wedding experience needs lead time, and for me, I need more than a month,” says Berger. “Problem-solving can take a great deal of time, and I like to spend more time on the work required to plan a spectacular wedding experience.”
As her most authentic self, Tiffany worked for a year and a half on Natasha Barrow and Perry Holen’s Ketchum wedding held on March 21, 2026. Holen grew up visiting Sun Valley because his mother was from Ketchum, and it’s where he learned to ski. He has a close connection to the late Diane Kneeland, founder of the Kneeland Gallery, and he and Barrow share a passion for Sun Valley’s beauty and its local artists.
“It was important to the couple to include the arts in their wedding celebration,” says Berger. “Since Diane had passed, Holen and Barrow wanted to show how much they love art and the gallery, especially Diane’s support for local art and artists. They wanted to do something unique, outside the box, and true to them, especially at a local venue with local vendors.”
As part of a traditional Sun Valley wedding, the couple hosted a Roundhouse dinner via the gondola the day before the wedding for international and domestic guests from Singapore, Norway, Belgium, and across the U.S. However, the bride and groom wanted to incorporate a forward-thinking idea they had been considering for some time—holding their ceremony on Fourth Street next to the Gail Severn Gallery, with the reception hosted there and utilizing several Valley vendors. This posed a challenge because of the need for extensive street permitting, but Berger was persistent on crafting this vision.
“When it comes to creativity, I am always in favor of new and contemporary ideas,” she says. “I figured out the process, but we had to be approved by the city council before sending invitations. We were approved just in time.”
An important element of Berger’s wedding planning and event business is to always include Wood River Valley vendors whenever possible, as she is a year-round event planner for dinners, ski races, and other celebratory and milestone events.
“There’s no single template for event planning. Every wedding, from style and design to layout and a couple’s intentions and what matters to them on their day, is different,” says Berger. “What makes wedding planning so wonderful is that it’s never cookiecutter, which is incredibly rewarding for me.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE A SUN VALLEY WEDDING?
I grew up in Sun Valley, so it was never really a question. Jay and I have been visiting together ever since we started dating. We’ve made so many amazing memories together there. It was the first place we said, ‘I love you,’ so it felt fitting to get married there as well!
WHAT WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS YOU WANTED AS PART OF YOUR WEDDING?
The most important part of the wedding to me was sharing one of our favorite places with all of our favorite people at once. When do you ever get to do that, if not at your wedding? It was also important that the wedding felt like an intimate party rather than a wedding.
WHY IS A WEDDING AT THE ROUNDHOUSE ON BALDY SO SPECIAL?
Roundhouse is one of the most iconic and classic Sun Valley locations, and it was special to pick a venue we frequent so we would go back often. So many people asked if we were sad that it was over once we got home, and we thought, no, we will be back next winter, eating fondue and drinking Aperol spritzes with all of our friends. Being back here will always remind us of the wedding.

Community generosity provides access to advanced breast screening

When it comes to breast health, access and reassurance matter. For women in the Wood River Valley, that reassurance comes from knowing they have access to advanced breast cancer screenings close to home. This is possible because of the generosity of the community and the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation.
Recent philanthropic support has expanded breast imaging services at St. Luke’s Wood River, including the addition of automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), a supplemental screening technology designed to improve cancer detection for women with dense breast tissue. These investments build on existing services such as 3D mammography and breast MRI, helping reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for additional imaging at an already stressful time.
“This advancement was made possible through the generous support of our community,” says Megan Tanous, chief development officer for the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation. “We are deeply grateful to our donors for their longstanding commitment to women’s health. Their generosity has accelerated access to this new technology and funded critical investments, including the Women’s Imaging Center, 3D mammography, and breast MRI— ensuring women in our community receive leading‑edge care close to home.”
In the Wood River Valley, 72 percent of women screened at St. Luke’s Wood River have dense breast tissue, which can be associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer.
SCREENING AS THE FOUNDATION OF BREAST HEALTH
Routine screening mammography remains the cornerstone of breast cancer detection. National guidelines encourage women over 40 to receive regular mammograms, even when they have no symptoms. Finding cancer early can lead to more treatment options and better outcomes.
At St. Luke’s Wood River, patients receive 3D mammography (tomosynthesis), which creates layered images of the breast rather than a single flat view. This helps radiologists clearly evaluate breast tissue and identify potential concerns.
For many women, a screening mammogram provides reassurance and clarity. For others, particularly those with dense breast tissue, a mammogram is only the first step, which is why financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
UNDERSTANDING BREAST DENSITY
Having dense breast tissue is common and normal. It simply means the breast contains more glandular and fibrous tissue than fat. Nationally, about 40 percent of women have dense breasts. In the Wood River Valley, that percentage is significantly higher with 72 percent of women screened at St. Luke’s Wood River having dense breast tissue.
Dense tissue appears white on a mammogram, the same color as many tumors, making cancers more difficult to detect, and can be associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer. This is why additional screening may be recommended.
“Mammography remains the foundation of breast cancer screening,” says Dr. Leigh Morse, chief of staff for Family Medicine at St. Luke’s Wood River. “For patients with dense breast tissue, supplemental screening gives us another way to be thorough. Having those options available locally helps reduce anxiety and removes barriers to follow up care.”
SECONDARY SCREENING CLOSE TO HOME
Secondary, or supplemental, screening is used in addition to a mammogram when a patient’s breast density or risk profile suggests more imaging could be helpful. Until recently, many patients in the Wood River Valley had to travel hours, often to the Treasure Valley, for these exams.
Now, with donor support, patients can access two secondary screening options right at St. Luke’s Wood River, including breast MRI and automated breast ultrasound (ABUS).
“Needing additional imaging can be overwhelming for patients,” says Kandis Pedersen, director of Medical Imaging for St. Luke’s Wood River, Magic Valley and Jerome. “By bringing advanced technology like ABUS to our local hospital, we’re not only improving diagnostic capabilities—we’re making the experience more compassionate by reducing travel, time, and stress for patients.”
WHAT IS AUTOMATED BREAST ULTRASOUND (ABUS)?
ABUS, also known as whole breast ultrasound, is specifically designed to improve cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue. ABUS is offered as a supplemental screening exam and requires a provider referral. Unlike mammography, ABUS uses sound waves rather than radiation to create detailed, three dimensional images of the breast.
During the exam, a scanner moves gently over the breast, capturing hundreds of thin image slices that radiologists review alongside a screening mammogram. On ultrasound, dense tissue appears light and potential masses appear darker, helping highlight areas that may be difficult to see on mammography alone.

The exam typically takes 30 minutes, involves minimal compression, and does not require contrast dye or radiation.
“ABUS gives us another important tool,” Pedersen says. “It allows radiologists to examine breast tissue in a different way and helps ensure we’re providing a thorough evaluation—especially for women with dense breasts.”
HOW ABUS COMPARES TO CONTRAST BREAST MRI
Breast MRI remains the most sensitive imaging option for detecting breast cancer, particularly for women at higher risk. MRI uses magnetic imaging and intravenous contrast dye to identify changes in blood flow that may indicate cancer. The exam typically takes about one hour and produces highly detailed images.
Because breast MRI requires intravenous contrast and isn’t appropriate for some patients due to MRI contraindications, ABUS offers an effective supplemental option for many women with dense breast tissue. Radiologists and providers at St. Luke’s work closely with patients to select the most appropriate screening approach based on individual risk factors, medical history, and comfort level.

The exhibition’s visual identity is anchored by Kari McCluey, a Boise-based leather artist who designed the exhibition’s signature scarf and poster. Her work sets the tone for a collection where utility and fine art intersect.
Among the featured craftswomen is Nancy Martiny, a rancher and saddle maker inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2025. “The Idaho Cowgirl Congress is a gathering of talented women artists and craftswomen dedicated to sharing their skills with aspiring artisans and sharing their world with the public,” says Martiny. “The event gives these dedicated artists the opportunity to gather for education, inspiration, and fellowship, with the intent of carrying forward the Western trades for the next generation.”
The Wood River Valley’s celebration of the Congress begins well before the exhibition officially opens its doors. On June 3, the Museum will host a screening of Hard Twist: Through the Lens of Barbara Van Cleve at Merlin’s Magic Lantern in Ketchum. On June 11, Hailey-based boot maker Morgan Buckert, whose custom footwear is so highly sought-after that it carries a three-year waiting list, will lead a hand-stitched leather
wallet workshop at a mid-Valley ranch. Buckert has been a key figure in organizing the Congress, helping bridge the gap between traditional techniques and contemporary craft.
The exhibition officially opens on Wednesday, June 17, with a public celebration at the Museum featuring a performance by awardwinning musician and actor Julie Rowe. The conversation continues June 18, with a panel at The Community Library in Ketchum, offering the public a chance to engage directly with the makers.
Idaho Cowgirl Congress is made possible through the generous support of the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Sun Valley Museum of Art, Handwork 2026, and The Smithsonian. This June, Gilman Contemporary is featuring three series from German photographer Jan C. Schlegel. Known for a diverse subject matter and meticulous platinum prints, Schlegel is as much attuned to process as subject. A traveler and researcher who fully immerses himself in his work, his portraits span from the microscopic to the monumental. Each series weaves scientific inquiry with intimate artistry.
In Life on Earth, Schlegel peers through dual lenses of camera and microscope, crafting portraits of microscopic phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are invisible to the naked eye as they drift throughout the world’s oceans and waterways, producing much of Earth’s oxygen. Rooted in personal scientific research, the series moves fluidly between the precision of biology and the intimacy of portraiture, balancing the microscope’s objective lens with the camera’s subjective eye.
Inspired by a field of 250 beautiful tulips encountered during his travels, In My Garden is the culmination of Schlegel nurturing a garden of his own. Through daily visits, careful watering, and patient tending, he cultivated not only the flowers but also a genuine emotional investment in them. When they finally bloomed, the beauty they yielded carried a deeper resonance: a garden in which his heart, as much as his hands, had played a part.

OCHI is pleased to present River to River; a solo exhibition of new ceramic tile wall works by Los Angeles-based artist Emily Marchand. This is Marchand’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. River to River will be on view at OCHI, located at 119 Lewis Street in Ketchum, Idaho, from May 8 through June 27, 2026.
Emily Marchand’s latest body of work turns inward while remaining rooted in the ecosystems that have long shaped her practice. Drawing from formative memories along the intersection of the Sacramento and American Rivers, Marchand revisits the natural landscapes of her youth as sites where joy, loss, and emotional awareness first intertwined. In River to River, the flowing bodies of water function as both real and symbolic spaces for refuge, reflection, and transformation. Now based in Los Angeles, Marchand extends this sensibility to the Arroyo Seco, where daily encounters with wildlife and seasonal cycles offer a quiet continuity between past and present.
Expanding upon her 2025 solo exhibition with OCHI, Marchand’s new works diffuse emotional energy across a broader ecology of beings. Large-scale ceramic tile vignettes depict flora and fauna imbued with the presence of those she has lost. Animals, birds, and insects become carriers of memory with their forms acting as quiet tributes to interconnected cycles of life and death. The surfaces themselves retain clear evidence of the artist’s hand, with impressions, irregularities, and subtle shifts in glaze that resist refinement in favor of immediacy, foregrounding an understanding of beauty rooted in impermanence and imperfection. It is through this human presence, gently embedded in each form, that the works accrue their emotional resonance. This exhibition signals an evolution of Marchand’s practice: grief is no longer anchored to one figure but instead metabolized through sustained attention to the natural world where it is dispersed, shared, and transformed into a generative force.

A major new body of work reimagines Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show through the bold, contemporary vision of one of the American West’s most distinctive painters, Thom Ross.
Debuting on the eve of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Thom Ross’ latest exhibition reexamines the legendary touring spectacle that helped define how America, and the world, imagined the frontier.
Founded by William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody in 1883, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West became one of the earliest and most influential global exports of American culture, touring the United States and Europe for 30 years.
With his expressive brushwork and dynamic compositions, Ross captures the energy of the Wild West arena and the presence of its iconic figures, while also reflecting on the complex cultural narratives embedded within the spectacle itself. From scenes of high drama and action to quieter, more introspective moments, the exhibition reveals a nuanced perspective on a defining chapter of American history—one where performance and reality became inseparably intertwined.
For Ross, “the West we think we know has been staged, performed, and retold for over a 100 years. I’m interested in that space, where fact and fiction blur, where reality becomes myth, and how Cody seemed to move with ease between the two worlds.”
Born in San Francisco in 1952 and raised in Sausalito, Ross earned his fine arts degree from California State University, Chico in 1974 and has been creating art ever since. He describes himself as “a storyteller who paints” and is widely recognized for bringing contemporary energy to iconic frontier subjects.
“I’ve long admired Thom’s ability to bring historical material into the present with intensity, wit, and emotional charge,” says gallery owner Edward Hemmings. “This new series feels especially timely. It connects American history, national mythology, and the image-making machinery of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West to a moment when the country is again thinking about how it tells its own story.”

Committed to exceptional cuisine, Fiamma features a welcoming, spacious 90-seat dining area with a chef’s counter and Taverna, the bar annex. Surrounded by walls adorned with shou sugi ban, Venetian plaster, and Italian-inspired tile floors, Fiamma’s centerpiece is a seven-foot live-fire grill where Chef Britt crafts heritage-inspired Italian dishes over an open flame.
With fresh fatto a mano, handmade pasta, including tortellini, ravioli, and more, Fiamma takes pride in its authentic pastamaking. Additionally, with aperitivos and other favored Italian cuisine, you will delight in a dessert menu like no other in Ketchum, featuring gelatos and sorbettos, a house tiramisu, and chocolate budino, plus affogatos and more for an after-dinner Italian coffee.
Fiamma’s game-focused, regionally inspired Italian cuisine showcases seasonal products sourced from across the Mountain West, as well as regional purveyors including Mountain Pride, MacFarlane Pheasant, Kasota Hydroponics, River Road Farm, Shoemaker Bison Ranch, Charlie’s Produce, Wagon Wheel Produce, Riverence, Idaho Springs Caviar, Snake River Farms, and more.
To complement the elevated cuisine, a robust wine program with a carefully hand-curated wine list selected by Fiamma’s Wine Director Brady McAlister adds even more satiable enjoyment to Ketchum’s newest dining establishment and the Valley’s culinary food and wine experience.
The dining room is reservation-only, available online, and walk-ins are welcome in the Taverna where Fiamma celebrates the tradition of aperitivo with an Italian-inspired happy hour nightly from 4:30-5:30pm featuring live-fire off-menu bites, and a robust, curated cocktail list.
