EDITOR’S WELCOME

Is there a month more emblematic of summer than July? Pyrotechnics light up the Valley skies, classical music pours from the Pavilion, families flock to sunlit trailheads and waterfronts, and art exhibits and street parties spur the community to gather.

This Fourth of July, we celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary and remember that the pioneer spirit of the West lives right here. Our July issue of SVPN reflects the diversity, free-spiritedness, and conviviality that define our communities and root us to the present while remaining optimistic for the future.

The featured property for our July edition is a legacy estate, the kind that anchors a family’s story for generations to come, with home at its center. Located in the distinguished Elkhorn neighborhood, the estate has abundant acreage, developable land, and a contemporary four-bedroom residence that bridges elevated living to the Idaho wilderness for the best the state has to offer.

Each summer, the highly anticipated Sun Valley Writers’ Conference (July 18-20) offers world-class literary programs in the great outdoors. This year, the conference is honoring one of the country’s most important storytellers, Ken Burns, with its Writer in the World prize. We had the opportunity to sit down with Burns to discuss his Emmy Award-winning documentary films and to shed light on his newest film project, The American Revolution, which is centered on how the revolution radically reshaped the continent. Don’t miss his talk on Saturday, July 18 at the Sun Valley Pavilion.

Taking a walk through local culture and history, we cover the Sun Valley Pavilion’s genesis. The spectacular architecture of the open-air Pavilion was built from an uncompromising vision and Italian travertine quarried in Tivoli, the same source that supplied St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Home to the annual Sun Valley Music Festival (July 27-August 20), it continues to attract seasonal visitors from around the world to experience its storied sound.

Our community feature is The Space Idaho, a nonprofit that provides teens in the Wood River Valley with curated programs to enrich, educate, and support each student, meeting them exactly where they are. We are so grateful to the dedicated staff who are mentoring and inspiring the next generation of artists, teachers, engineers, and business owners.

Summertime calls us back to simpler times and there is no shortage of outdoor fun this month. Take a sunset cruise across the glittering Redfish Lake, celebrate the Fourth of July in downtown Hailey, hit the gallery walks and mingle with featured artists, rally your friends for the Baldy Bluebird Music Festival, or get your thrills by biking or hiking Baldy’s 3,100 vertical feet of downhill trails.

Wherever the summer takes you, may it be surrounded by familiar faces and sparked with new connections to savor the boundless beauty with.

“The fact that our country was created is amazing and more important than whatever is going on at the present moment. We’re also celebrating our country’s 250th, and we must remember to celebrate that.”

Sun Valley Writers’ Conference honors documentary filmmaker Ken Burns SITTING DOWN WITH AMERICA’S FINEST STORYTELLER

Since 1995, the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference (SVWC) has drawn a diverse audience, connecting those enjoying Sun Valley’s beautiful mountain summer setting with today’s most compelling writers and thinkers. The SVWC roster has featured many award-winning and notable fiction and nonfiction writers, journalists, playwrights, poets, historians, and filmmakers, including Doris Kearns Goodwin, David Brooks, Abraham Verghese, Margaret Atwood, Ocean Vuong, and Salman Rushdie.

In recognition of the country’s 250th anniversary, SVWC will present its 2026 Writer in the World Prize to iconic documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. To honor his body of work, they recognize his narrative brilliance combined with a moral imagination that deepens the viewer’s understanding of history, humanity, and our shared future.

For more than half a century, Burns has been making documentary films. Since his Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has directed and produced some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made, including The Civil War; Baseball; Jazz; The War; The National Parks: America’s Best Idea; Prohibition; The Roosevelts: An Intimate History; The Vietnam War; Country Music; The U.S. and the Holocaust; The American Buffalo; and Leonardo da Vinci.

Burns will often balance several productions at once, working with award-winning actors alongside historians, professors, and researchers, and compiling important papers, images, art, and significant documents to create a living history for each subject he approaches. His work is so monumental in depth and appearance that Steve Jobs created the “Ken Burns Effect,” a video-editing technique that “wakes up an old photograph visually and orally.”

Burns’ films have received 17 Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and two Oscar nominations. At the 2008 News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Burns was honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2022, he was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.

Taking place close to Idaho, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s three-part, six-hour documentary series, Hemingway, examines the visionary work and turbulent life of one of the greatest and most influential American writers , Ernest Hemingway. As an auteur, Burns has shaped how generations understand the American story, and with his most recent release, The American Revolution, he offers valuable and possibly new perspectives on the country’s history.

“In some ways, the American Revolution was a civil war,” says Burns. “It was bloody and also a global war. We wanted to understand this land, inhabited by Native peoples, and its complexities.”

Burns emphasizes the importance of recognizing that the American Revolution led to the creation of a brand-new world.

“Everyone up to the time of the American Revolution had been a subject under authoritarian rule,” Burns says. “The American Revolution was radical and one of the most important events in world history. Thomas Payne says that not since the time of Noah’s ark had there been such a reset.”

Burns describes his approach to documentary filmmaking as a subtractive process, developed over years of working with scholars, historians, archivists, actors, and other creative collaborators. For The American Revolution, the material was whittled down from 400-500 hours to 15 hours, including 400 first-person voices representing 150 characters, read off camera by 61 of the world’s finest actors.

“At a time when we are so existentially compromised, it is important for a country, just as it is for an individual, to go back in a moment of crisis and try to understand its origin story,” says Burns. “There’s a very big question: why would people have spent years and years fighting for an abstract idea and concept that has never been tried?”

He adds, “It’s really impressive. The fact that our country was created is amazing and more important than whatever is going on at the present moment. We’re also celebrating our country’s 250th, and we must remember to celebrate that.” 

A COMMUNITY CRESCENDO

How the legendary Sun Valley Pavilion found its sound

On summer days in the late 1960s, young musicians rehearsed outdoors for the Sun Valley Music Camp at the resort. Warbling flutists played on a patch of grass in the mall, and further on, the rich tones of cellists flowed on the breeze from a porch by the pond.

Around 1984, after Bill Janss sold Sun Valley to the Holding family, classical music resurfaced under the stewardship of local aficionados in Elkhorn village. Performances and attendance were improving but then access to the venue was abruptly canceled.

Organizers came to Sun Valley Resort and met with the Holding’s right-hand man, Wally Huffman. They presented a plan to stage the Symphony in a tent on the soccer field. Earl Holding had previously expressed his appreciation for classical music to Wally, and presto, the answer was, “Let’s do this!”

The quality of the program escalated for years and audiences spilled out of the tent onto the green. A facility upgrade was imminent. A key player on the Symphony board, Carol Nie, along with her team, came to Huffman with a sketch by Nick Goldsmith for a pavilion. Huffman agreed to show it to the Holdings, but he had reservations. The design was very modern, avant-garde. Sure enough, Earl Holding hesitated; how would such a contemporary structure fit into a Tyrolean ski village? Caesura . The music paused.

People thought the project would take two years, Holding did it in 11 months.
Below left: Music Director Alasdair Neale, Sun Valley Executive Wally Huffman, and Symphony visionary Carol Nie
Below middle: The original Nick Goldsmith sketch

Ever the attentive first-chair executive, Huffman suggested they get an opinion from Frank Nicholson, a designer who had put European flourishes in Holding’s Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City. Nicholson examined the sketch and models, toured the proposed location, and pronounced, “It will fit. It will fit because it’s a work of art.”

Earl Holding plied his legendary investigations into detail, then met with the Symphony board and essentially said, “I’m in.” There were no formal plans yet, but things started moving, forte.

Among the axioms Earl Holding espoused for resort management were, “It’s not what you expect, it’s what you inspect.” And, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” Both came into play, con brio

The Holdings inspected several western U.S. structures. Earl Holding thought an Aspen facility looked like a circus tent. Carol Holding saw the stonework at the Getty Museum and

The Sun Valley team and local architect Nick Latham flew to Rome to visit the Mariotti and Figli quarry. Travertine from this area has been used in Italian construction for over 2,000 years, including at the Coliseum and St. Peter’s Basilica.

said, “That’s what I want.” Then the Sun Valley team and local architect Nick Latham flew to Rome to visit the Mariotti and Figli quarry. Thirty hours later they had a deal for a key architectural element of the proposed pavilion. Travertine from this area has been used in Italian construction for over 2,000 years, including at the Coliseum and St. Peter’s Basilica.

At the end of the 2007 symphony season, Earl Holding announced that the new facility would be completed for the following year’s opening night. Designers and construction crews had to step up, allegro molto!

It was an 11-month build with work often going late or overnight. Structural elements are bold artistic features suggesting the mechanics of musical instruments. Sweeping contours match the mountains. The cleft travertine is tightly fit and arcs grandly, but it also has an intricate tactile appeal. The interior finishes are consummate Holding elegance. The translucent fabric roof of the amphitheater, tight as a drum, glows in sunlight. The acoustics are superb.

From that first on-time opening through the present day, the Symphony, now called the Sun Valley Music Festival, has grown with the Pavilion as its centerpiece. The month-long free event attracts world-famous stars and top musicians. Educational

programs and more intimate presentations engage students. At major performances, viewing screens and amplification turn the five-acre green into a community experience. For many, it has evolved from a remarkable attraction to a cherished summer ritual for family and friends.

Thanks to the dedication of a few visionaries, the location and structural spectacle contributed by the Holding family, and generous public donations, the Sun Valley Music Festival at the R.E. Holding Pavilion is a marvelous experience. 

How The Space Idaho supports local teens beyond the school system CLOSING THE GAP

The life of a teenager is typically centered around school, but resources and budgets often fall short of meeting their needs. Recent data from a partnership with the organization Together We shows that teens in the Wood River Valley are experiencing increased isolation, depression, and anxiety. A key finding also revealed that teens who can rely on a trusted adult outside of the home and school are more likely to thrive.

This is where The Space steps in.

Centrally located in the heart of Hailey, the nonprofit is a safe, third space designed for teens to drop in and utilize the resources they need the most, from opportunities to socialize with peers to mentorship and individualized academic support. They serve ages 12–20, from middle school through post-secondary, through their four curated programs designed to enrich, educate, and support each student, meeting them exactly where they are.

The programs include homework and test prep, enrichment activities, college and career counseling as well as a free six-week summer program for middle school students and a Bilingual Scholars summer program for students learning English. “Last year we served almost 300 students,” says Director of Development Laura Schaaf Calvert. “They chose to come for an average of 19 visits a year, which shows that we’re giving them something that they need—and want.”

BUILT FOR TEENS, LED BY EXPERTS

On any given day at The Space, you might see a student studying with a trusted mentor for their upcoming SAT exam or teens collaborating and smiling over an experimental art project. The attentive staff creates an environment that motivates students and fosters self-worth. “While The Space’s resources helped me ace my first honors and college-level math classes, the skills I learned about confidence, perseverance, and perfection will stay with me for the rest of my life,” says Maeve, a former student at The Space.

Financial accessibility is a core value of the organization. Their affordable services are offered on a sliding scale based on financial need, which helps subsidize programming for teens who require additional assistance.

COLLECTIVE EFFORT IS THE KEY

The Space is a place where bridges are built between the community and teens to develop meaningful relationships and connect them to experiences that expand what’s possible for them. Marty Lyons, a local painter, comes regularly to The Space to teach students pastel art, both inspiring the students and passing along his gift to the next generation. Outside the classroom, students have studied the diverse eco-systems of Silver Creek in partnership with The Nature Conservancy. Other local partnerships with the Sun Valley Museum of Art, The Liberty Theatre, and The Hunger Coalition have been instrumental in supporting the community’s youth.

“It takes a joint and local effort to make sure the teens have the support they need to contribute to sustaining this beautiful community that we’ve all built,” says Calvert. 

A LEGACY ESTATE

Discover a modern multigenerational compound in the distinguished Elkhorn community

In the rarefied air of Sun Valley’s Elkhorn neighborhood sits an almost mythical estate sequestered on 7.36 pristine acres in one of Sun Valley’s most desirable communities. The property at 419 Juniper Road is both a developer’s dream and the ultimate canvas for a multigenerational family compound with five contiguous lots on developable land surrounded by the soul-stirring beauty that has drawn generations to the Valley.

A CALL TO THE WILD

Sounds of the nearby murmuring creek and native birds create a sanctuary of wildlife with miles of unspoiled views. Here, there is incomparable access to the outdoors and recreation without compromising conveniences, such as access to nearby schools and businesses. Outdoor enthusiasts can mountain bike, hike, and horseback ride across 1,800 acres of protected land abutting Elkhorn open space or opt for skiing and summer activities at Dollar Mountain and Baldy, just minutes away.

Built in 1977, the four-bedroom, four-bath log and beam home has been renovated almost entirely to embody luxurious mountain living. Leading up to the contemporary residence is thoughtful landscaping by Native Landscapes that beautifully connects the surrounding Idaho wilderness to the refined setting of the home. The additional four lots are zoned for ample properties, offering flexibility for the owners to build guest homes or staff quarters.

Designed by storied Sun Valley architect Jim McLaughlin, the home bridges spectacular architecture with high-end furnishings and design by Jennifer Hoey that have been meticulously executed by Conrad Brothers Construction. The open-concept layout stuns with ceilinghigh windows framing the Sawtooth Mountains like fine art. The great room amplifies the home’s theme of mountain modernity with rustic elements like vaulted wooden beams and a stonework fireplace.

A fully equipped kitchen has Thermador appliances, custom cabinetry, and a stately island with additional amenities. Ensuite bedrooms are an extension of the heart of the home, brightly lit and cozy. The loft overlooks the great room and features a well-appointed office space, a full bath, and a charming bunk room and sleeping nook. With direct views of nature from nearly every corner, life here pulls you to the wild not far beyond.

Light is a central design element in the great room amplified by expansive windows to reveal the exceptional mountain views of this high-altitude retreat. Vaulted ceilings, highend finishes, and a gas fireplace create a warm and luxurious setting for intimate gatherings while the sliding glass doors lead you to the stonelaid patio beyond.

The state-of-the-art kitchen flows seamlessly from the dining area and great room. It features exquisite darkblue cabinetry designed with brass hardware, two sinks, appliances from Thermador, and a stately island with a chef’s chopping block and integrated bar seating.

A large, sliding barn door welcomes you from the primary bedroom into the ensuite bathroom. Live in the lap of luxury with custom herringbone tilework, a heated brass towel rack, two vanities, and a shower designed for two with a rainfall feature in the center.

Elegantly appointed, the primary bedroom is a spacious retreat located on the main floor just steps from the great room. Vaulted ceilings, large casement windows for unobstructed views of the woodlands, and integrated custombuilt cabinetry with brass features offer ambiance and convenience.

Wellness is a mainstay at this modern home. The relaxation and fitness studio has panoramic glass windows for an intimate connection to the verdant landscape. Ideal for practicing Pilates, yoga, weight training, or to receive an at-home massage before soaking in the free-standing tub. The room is directly connected to the outdoor hot tub on a secluded patio hidden by pine trees.

LEGACY LIVING AT ITS FINEST

Designed for a life enriched with activities best enjoyed in the West, the property includes a three-stall heated horse barn with tack room, wash area, generous storage, and adjacent two-bedroom, two-bath guest quarters. For horse lovers, there is a professional riding arena and secure corral to complete the equestrian infrastructure, making it ideal for daily training or weekend clinics. With no limitations in sight, the facility’s flexible design allows it to be kept for horses or easily reimagined as a climate-controlled luxury car barn or premium bike garage.

Between the expansive acreage and developable lots, this estate belongs to a visionary seeking to begin or continue their legacy in the Valley. In a market and region where such assemblages simply do not exist, this is both a rare investment opportunity and an invitation to craft the mountain life you have always imagined. 

THE GREAT LAKE ESCAPE

Discover summer bliss at Redfish Lake Lodge

Redfish Lake has been luring visitors to its breathtaking shores for over 140 years. When the historic Redfish Lake Lodge opened in 1929, the fledgling resort had a gas station, eight canvas tent cabins, a dining room and kitchen, lodge rooms, a small dock, and two motorboats. Today, close to 700,000 people a year flock to this iconic Idaho mountain outpost where lakeside charm and nostalgia greet generations of families and visitors. Quaint lodge rooms and modern and restored historic cabins provide comfortable lodging opportunities. The on-site General Store stocks souvenirs, groceries, and camping and fishing supplies. At the modern full-service marina, you can rent boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes or opt to take the hiker shuttle across the lake to visit the Redfish Inlet Trailhead where the spectacular Sawtooth Wilderness Area offers miles of off-grid expeditions.

A TASTE OF THE GOOD LIFE

The lodge is basecamp for extended adventure opportunities, including lake tours, bike rentals, horseback riding, swimming, camping, and even yoga. To fuel your outdoor appetite, look to Limbert’s in the main lodge where a culinary selection of true Idaho mountain comfort food is available for breakfast and dinner. Inside the Rustic Lounge, food and cocktails are served alongside pure nostalgia and famed memorabilia. The Two Gun’s Cafe serves on-the-go espresso, coffee, and doughnut holes while the Lakeside Grill offers outdoor casual food beachside for lunch and dinner. The Sunset Appetizer Cruise is a memorable way to close the day with charcuterie and champagne in hand.

ADVENTURE ABOUNDS

A short walk from the lodge above Dog Beach sits the Redfish Visitor Center and Gallery. Constructed by the U.S. Forest Service in 1964, it is the second oldest visitor center in the country and the oldest in the lower 48 states. The center is managed by the Sawtooth Interpretive Historical Association, provid ing a team of naturalists who share a wealth of information and programs for visitors to learn more about the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This includes immersive experiences such as Discovery Stations, patio talks, Junior Ranger and Wilderness Explorer programs, boat tours, and more. The gallery features local artists’ work and a gift shop that sells books, souvenirs, and maps of the area.

From late July through early October, Redfish Lake Lodge is the perfect place to check out the sockeye salmon returning to their spawning waters in the Sawtooth Valley Basin. We recommend stopping by the Visitor Center for a prime view of the salmon run.  redfishlake.com

STYLE DIAL

For our July issue, we spotlight Sun Valley’s interior designers for their expertise on enduring designs they are turning to this summer season. From sun-speckled patios in the morning to cool evenings beneath the stars, the outdoors is where we all want to be. Inspire your next al fresco gathering by integrating elegant and durable furniture, modern fireplaces to create memories around, and walk-out terraces that connect the indoors with the out.

SUMMER SANCTUARY

We design environments that feel as good as they look—timeless, balanced, and deeply connected to our surroundings. To create an outdoor home sanctuary in time for the summer, we use durable outdoor fabrics on furniture for a luxuriously cozy feel that invites guests from the indoors to the out. Whether it’s entertaining against a scenic backdrop or lounging in a well-appointed living room, we transform everyday spaces into experiences.

Red Door Home + Design 406 North Main Street | Hailey 208.788.9075 reddoordesignhouse.com

MOUNTAINSIDE MEMORIES

For this residential project, we curated a variety of outdoor living spaces across several distinct patios. Whether it’s marshmallow roasting at the firepit, a quick sunbath right off the primary suite, or a delicious sunset dinner, we have prioritized designing moments of relaxation and connection at this lovely mountainside home.

A TOUCH OF WILD

We often design interiors with the exterior views in mind so the local mountain landscape becomes a central experience of the home. By integrating large sliding doors with the use of natural materials and honoring a soft, grounded palette, we can elegantly blur the line between inside and out. The result is seamless living that bridges the seasonal beauty of the Valley to the welcoming comfort indoors. Here, a thoughtful indooroutdoor design creates a space that feels easy and relaxed, whether it’s a morning coffee on the patio or entertaining with the doors wide open in the summer.

OUTDOOR OASIS

To soak up the summer season, we are optimizing our outdoor dining areas to enjoy a meal with family and friends while listening to our favorite tunes. A few ways to elevate your al fresco space is to invest in stackable dining chairs for easy storage during the off-season and add an extendable dining table to accommodate a crowd. Bon appétit!

RIDING SMART

E-bike safety in the Wood River Valley

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming a familiar part of life in the Wood River Valley—making it easier to commute, enjoy the outdoors, and move through town without the hassle of parking. From work commutes to social meetups to riding the Wood River Trail, many people are choosing e-bikes as a more sustainable and fun way to get around. Unfortunately, as use increases, so do the risks.

Dr. Malie Kopplin, St. Luke’s Wood River’s trauma medical director, says the Emergency Department (ED) regularly treats injuries tied to e-bike crashes during the warmer months. These incidents range from minor to life-changing—and often share common, preventable factors. “What we see reinforces that these bikes are more powerful than many people expect,” Kopplin says. “When control is lost, the injuries can be significant.”

HELMETS: A SIMPLE STEP THAT SAVES LIVES

One of the most effective ways to reduce injury risk is also the simplest: wear a helmet. Head injuries remain a leading concern in bike-related crashes, particularly at higher speeds. Helmets are designed to absorb impact and help protect the brain, making them a non-negotiable before getting on a bike. And for families, the message is especially important. Modeling helmet use helps reinforce safe habits for the kids.

Kopplin says that these small decisions have big consequences. “All it takes is one fall, even at moderate speed, to result in serious injury,” she says.

HOW TO BEST WEAR A HELMET:

 Sit level on your head and fit snugly under the chin

 Be replaced after any crash or every 3-5 years

 Match the activity whenever possible

THE POWER OF E-BIKES

While e-bikes look similar to traditional bicycles, they behave differently. They accelerate more quickly, carry more weight, and can reach speeds that require faster reaction times and more deliberate handling. For riders who are new or haven’t spent time getting comfortable with the controls, that difference can catch them off-guard.

“People may not realize how quickly these bikes can pick up speed or how much force is involved when stopping,” says Brittany McFarland, RN, St. Luke’s Wood River’s Trauma Program Manager. “That’s where we see loss of control, especially in environments with other people around.”

Practicing in a safe area before heading into higher traffic areas can help riders better understand braking, turning, and acceleration.

RIDE WITH AWARENESS

Riding a bike is both environmentally friendly and a great way to enjoy local trails. While the intention is positive, it’s important to know how alcohol or substance use can impact one’s ability to ride an e-bike.

A casual ride to a concert or a dinner can easily turn into a higherrisk situation on the return trip. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect balance, coordination, and reaction time, especially with the speed and acceleration of an e-bike. Clinicians in the valley consistently see this pattern. “Riding under the influence may feel like a safer alternative to driving, but impairment still affects your ability to react and stay in control,” Kopplin says.

How a bike is used is also important. Bringing along extra gear, like a heavy backpack, a bulky picnic basket, or even a second rider can change the balance and handling of the bike that riders may not anticipate. “It doesn’t take much to shift the center of gravity or affect braking distance,” McFarland says. “Those factors matter, especially at speed.”

SHARING THE TRAILS

The Wood River Trail is one of the valley’s most valued and popular shared spaces, used by cyclists, walkers, runners, and families alike. With more people and faster devices on the trail, courtesy plays a critical role in safety.

On multi-use paths, bikers are expected to yield to more vulnerable users and adjust speed based on conditions. But beyond the rules, there’s a long-standing local culture worth holding onto.

BASIC E-BIKE SAFETY HABITS:

 Wearing a helmet every time

 Starting slow and building confidence

 Using lights and reflective gear—even during the day

 Following local traffic laws

 Staying in control at all times

In the Wood River Valley, people smile or wave. A small gesture but an important one. Making eye contact acknowledges others and encourages a joint awareness that helps slow interactions down. After all, these are shared spaces, not thoroughfares. “Awareness and respect go a long way toward preventing injuries,” says McFarland.

A SAFER RIDE FOR EVERYONE

The same features that make e-bikes so appealing—their speed, ease, and convenience—also require a higher level of responsibility from their users. From the perspective of those who treat injuries, most incidents aren’t random and are often tied to decisions that seem small at the time. THE PARADOX OF SUMMER IN SUN VALLEY

Building resilience during the most beautiful, and exhausting, season

Summer in Sun Valley arrives as a magically kept promise. The mountains transform to green almost overnight while the rivers sparkle and the trails fill with people happy to be in Idaho. Our golden light inspires awe and an excitement to max out every moment of daylight. That excitement can quickly turn into a frenzied and frantic feeling. During summertime, town becomes crowded, world-class events pull you to the ballet and the symphony, your social life is full and you find yourself quietly becoming exhausted. It happens every year.

Summer in Sun Valley is one of the great gifts of living here, but it can lead to burnout. This is why a focus on resilience, cellular energy, and a charge of systems can help your immune and nervous system immensely. The type of resilience I am talking about is the capacity your nervous system has, at any given moment, to respond to life’s demands without breaking down. Our resilience is a resource and can be supported or depleted.

WHERE DOES OUR HEALTH COME FROM?

Our health comes from the brain. Our brain and nervous system control every bodily function: our immunity, hormonal regulation, sleep quality, energy levels, mood, and focus. These aren’t separate systems; they all determine how well the brain is communicating with your body. When that communication is clear, coherent, and well-regulated, you feel your best. When it’s fragmented, disrupted by stress, old injury, accumulated demand, poor sleep, alcohol, sugar, or the subtle weight of a season that never quite lets you rest, things start to slip.

PRO TIPS ON AVOIDING BURNOUT

I keep my spaces clean and my schedule structured with daily routines. I also eat clean, don’t drink alcohol, and am dedicated to movement and self-care. My favorites are cold plunging, sauna, PEMF, nano Vi, Wintecare, high vibration foods and superfoods, and surrounding myself with people I love.

At CENTERED, we are an oasis of self-care. The body will heal given the right tools, and it is my personal relentless pursuit to find the most efficient ways to deliver that. We treat at the root level to address dysregulation directly, rather than managing the symptoms it produces. The results we see in our clinic, from neuromuscular rehab to nervous system rewiring and brain training, feel like miracles. They are the result of what happens when you ask precise questions about why a body isn’t working, how it can stay proactively healthy under stressful times, and how to prepare and respond with intelligence.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

Our self-care tools are for the local athlete who hasn’t felt fully right since that fall or injury two seasons ago or an active community member who can’t recover from an injury or surgery. Our tools are for the person whose sleep has been interrupted for so long they don’t know anything different. They are for the parent running on fumes who attributes it to the season, or the kids, or just life, and has, over time, stopped believing that a different baseline is available. They are also for women whose hormones, mental clarity, and immunity are so low that they feel hopeless.

Summer in Sun Valley offers us the nectar of life to feel inspired. Our health allows us to enjoy life. I train and prepare year-round to best experience the moments of awe, inspiration, and beauty that are delivered to our doorstep.

July 3 to October 17

This summer, the Sun Valley Museum of Art is throwing it back to its roots to celebrate its 55th anniversary. Instead of a quiet retrospective, the Museum is staging a vibrant celebration of the cultural landscape that birthed it. Rather than treating the museum’s founding year as a static milestone, the exhibition uses 1971 as a historical lens, pulling viewers into a transformative moment when the visual language of American art was completely upended.

The exhibit, Circa 1971: Works from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation , revisits this pivotal era in depth and is made possible because of the vision of Jordan D. Schnitzer. As North America’s foremost print collector, Schnitzer has spent decades building one of the continent’s most significant private art collections. His Family Foundation operates under a fiercely democratic philosophy, having loaned thousands of artworks to over 130 museums at no cost to ensure the public can interact with world-class art. For this anniversary exhibition, Schnitzer’s Foundation has loaned an unparalleled lineup of 20thcentury titans, featuring groundbreaking works by the likes of Anni Albers, Jasper Johns, Louise Nevelson, David Hockney, Sol LeWitt, and Andy Warhol, among others.

POP ART, PHOTOREALISM, AND MINIMALISM

Curated by Courtney Gilbert and Jennifer Wells Green in consultation with the museum’s founder Glenn Janss, Circa 1971 brings together prints and limited editions created between 1970 and 1972. The galleries capture the moment’s electric collision of artistic philosophies, showing how the bold sensibilities of Pop Art intersected with the perceptual experiments of Op Art, the sleekness of Minimalism, the precision of Photorealism, and the intellectual rigor of Conceptual Art.

The celebration officially kicks off on Friday, July 3, with a free community street party featuring 1970s vinyl spun by DJ Jackrabbit Slim and public art-making activities. Beyond the gallery walls, the museum has curated an expansive series of public programs that explore the era’s broader cultural ferment alongside its visual arts. The community can engage with the era through multiple lenses, including a lecture by Mimi Avins on how 1970s television reflected rapid social change, a film screening of The Mastermind at Merlin’s Magic Lantern, and an art history dialogue with L.A. Louver Gallery Director Kimberly Davis. The historical journey even extends into the era’s music scene, culminating

with a lecture at the Sun Valley Opera House by legendary rock photographer Henry Diltz. For those looking to explore the exhibit more thoroughly, the museum will host guided tours in the evenings on select Thursdays throughout the summer.

MAKING ART ACCESSIBLE

Supported generously by the museum’s Visionary Guardians and the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation, Circa 1971 champions printmaking as a highly democratic, accessible medium. It’s a fitting celebration for a nonprofit arts organization that has kept its admission completely free to the public since day one. Circa 1971 is an opportunity to connect with the creativity, experimentation, and boundary-pushing spirit that defined the Museum’s founding year and continues to shape it today. We encourage everyone to connect with contemporary art and the boundary-pushing spirit that defines us in our founding year. 

THREADLINES

Alia Ali transmutes personal experience through the quiet power of textiles

July 1 to August 3

Threadlines is a visual migration through multidisciplinary artist Alia Ali’s expansive body of work . Through photography and installation, the exhibition moves across a range of geographies. From India to Pakistan, Senegal to Côte d’Ivoire, and Morocco to Louisiana, Ali explores the energy, stories, and shapes of each place. She gracefully transmutes complex histories of migration, memory, and labor into stylized portraits, each cradled inside a frame enveloped in the same fabrics the figures wear. In vibrant patterns that blend and clash, she pushes past the conventional limits of photographic and geographic borders.

WOVEN HISTORIES

Textiles predate the written word and are among our first visual introductions to the world. From birth to death, we use cloth to both reveal and conceal our identity. It is through fabric’s patterns and colors that we build perceptions of ourselves and others. Ali weaves together the rich traditions of textile with unique portraits that verge on abstraction. In her hands these works are not only a record of where we have been, but also a vision of the future. The complexity of material acts as a means of both connection and separation. Ali creates a language where woven patterns move freely across boundaries and identities.

As we open ourselves to Ali’s visual narrative, we face figures wrapped in textiles whose absent features become a canvas for complex colonial histories, cultural assumptions, and a reflection of ourselves.

“What side of the fabric are we on? Can we exist on both sides at once?” asks Ali.

“Ultimately, do we exclude others from the fear of being excluded ourselves? Or does exclusion represent a metamorphosis of the outcast into the villain?”

CREATING FROM CONTRASTS

As a child of linguists and the product of a multilingual and multinational household, Ali challenges us to see through a lens where political and cultural dichotomies and definitions are questioned and quietly dismantled.

“I come from two countries that no longer exist: Yugoslavia and South Yemen [...] As a female artist who exists on the borders of identifying as West Asian, Eastern European, a United States citizen, and culturally Muslim, yet spiritually independent, my work explores cultural binaries, challenges culturally sanctioned oppression, and confronts the dualistic barriers of conflicted notions of gender, politics, media, and citizenship [...] My work critiques linguistics and inherited political structures, while simultaneously attempting to counter the polarization and miscommunication that imperils communities across the world, encouraging viewers to confront their own prejudices,” shares Ali. “What do we fear to discover beneath the cloth?” 

Jill Lear

June 15 to July 20

Ketchum-based artist Jill Lear creates artwork that explores ancient trees and rock formations through expressive yet restrained mark-making and collage. She treats negative space with the same weight and reverence as her subjects, examining how voids between elements have as much intention as the forms themselves. “Rocks, like trees, are witnesses to history. They are sentries observing time as it passes,” says Lear. In the two panels that form City of Rocks, Lear is attuned

to the stories told in the crests and curves of Idaho’s granite rock formations. “These stories are etched into the cracks and crevices of their solid, silent forms,” she expresses. “When I trace negative spaces and positive forms, I begin to understand what they have to say.” In each of Lear’s lyrical paintings, the viewer can also begin to see the stories that emerge from the silent witnesses.

Silas Thompson

June 22 to July 27

Artist Reception | July 3, 5-7:30pm

Idaho native landscape painter Silas Thompson is known for his vibrant use of color, texture, and light to capture the beauty of the state’s diverse landscapes, from farmland scenes to rural buildings and mountain lakes. Growing up in the backcountry with his father, Thompson was surrounded by iconic valleys, plains, and deserts that have become inspiration

for his creations. He wants his work to evoke memories and touch the viewer’s senses and mind. For Thompson, true adventure still waits beyond the reach of the city—about 50 miles past the last stoplight where risk amplifies beauty and danger sharpens the senses. In addition to Thompson’s artwork, there will be new paintings from other talented gallery artists.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

Hung Liu

Ever present in her work, Hung Liu’s birds are allegorical devices that carry the viewer towards a larger narrative. Whether Liu is painting cranes, caged birds, sparrows, or paper cranes, each avian subject is imbued with a deeper meaning. Executed in striking color and weeping realism, Liu’s large-scale oil paintings, mixed media resin pieces, and prints all touch on our collective emotional memory, connecting ghosts of the past with the present. This exhibition explores the full range of Liu’s symbolic tropes and their meaning: at once historical document, cultural meditation, political witness, and lyrical personal vision.

Morris Graves

The solo exhibition of Morris Graves celebrates the visionary work of one of the most distinctive voices of 20th century American art. His first two major museum exhibitions were at the Museum of Modern Art in 1940. Here, he brings together a selection of paintings, drawings, and works on paper, exploring his deeply spiritual connection to nature, silence, and the inner world. Graves is known for his luminous imagery of birds, flowers, and meditative landscapes; he created works that transcend realism and invite contemplation into his mystical vision. Through this intimate presentation, visitors are offered a rare opportunity to experience the poetic sensitivity and enduring influence of an artist whose work continues to resonate across generations. This show is running concurrently with the Seattle Art Museum’s show Beyond Mysticism.

Tom Hammick

The woodblock prints and oil paintings by Tom Hammick are informed by his love of poetry, opera, film, and a deep love for the environment. These largescale narratives, set within imaginary and mythological dreamscapes, serve as a metaphor for the human condition, transience, and states of mind. Taking inspiration

from German Expressionists and British Colorists, Hammick has learned to exploit the emotional impact of color, setting his subjects within large-scale surrealist landscapes awash in a vibrant palette of mutable and un-namable colors. The exhibition will feature new large-scale edition variable wood block prints, oil paintings, and etchings.

Jerry Hadam

Jerry Hadam’s Misstep centers a barbed wire fence line that serves as both boundary and consequence. Look closely to see a coyote pelt stretched and suspended against an open sky while sagebrush rolls into the hills beyond. The land holds its silence. The fence does its job.

Hadam works in the tradition of photographers who let the West speak without editorializing. Misstep is precisely that kind of image. Shot on a 4x5 large-format film camera, the photograph carries the weight of a place where life and death share the same fence post, and nobody flinches. Black and white, wide and still. There is beauty and hardness here. And in Hadam’s hands, the two are inseparable. A quietly arresting work, Misstep reminds us that the American West has always been honest about its terms. You either know the land, or the land lets you know.

Fine art photographer Jules Frazier has added the large-scale archival work, Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, to her American West Collection. The sepia-toned image is a roadside icon frozen in time carrying a dry wit and quiet personality that defines the West at its most authentic. The bull doesn’t blink. The sign means business. And somehow, that’s the funniest and most honest thing about it. The weathered marquee sign is mounted to a sculptural white Hereford bull, advertising the legendary “Miles City Bucking Horse Sale” with the straightforward confidence of an era that didn’t need to explain itself.

Frazier shot this image on a Hasselblad medium-format camera, her preferred tool for her American West series, during a road trip to the storied Benny Binion Ranch in Montana with a detour to Miles City’s iconic annual rodeo. The result is part document, part elegy: the kind of image that stops you midstride to feel the dust, the distance, and the particular American romance of a hand-set sign that’s been announcing something worth showing up for.

Emily Marchand

River to River

May 8 to July 11

Artist Reception | July 3, 5-7pm

Drawing from formative memories along the Sacramento and American Rivers, and daily encounters with wildlife along the Arroyo Seco in Los Angeles, Emily Marchand makes colorful ceramic tile wall works embedded with flora and fauna. Animals, birds, and insects become carriers of memory and quiet tributes to the interconnected cycles of life— and death. Examining the surfaces of Marchand’s artwork reveals clear evidence of the artist’s hand, showing impressions and subtle shifts in glaze that favor refinement and resist immediacy.

Tenderness and care are her strategies for accessing a range of emotions, with a timely focus on both joy and grief. What began as an investigation into big agriculture, seed banks, and food scarcity has now become an examination of the artist’s own relationship to community. It is what inspired her to evolve her connections to food, cooking, gardening, and feeding friends as well as unhoused neighbors.

River to River is Marchand’s second solo exhibition with OCHI and the occasion of her formal representation by the gallery.

Green Living Room by Brittany Fanning

48” x 48” 121.9 x 121.9 cm

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Vuillard, Vallotton, Hopper, and Lichtenstein, Brittany Fanning approaches interiors as visual timestamps that quietly record cultural values and shifting domestic ideals.

Fanning’s paintings begin with a curiosity about how people live and the ways domestic spaces quietly reveal character. Drawn to interiors as sites of both refuge and performance, Fanning examines how furniture, décor, and architecture reflect taste, aspiration, and identity. One of her favorite weekend activities is visiting open houses to observe, and sometimes judge, how people stage their homes. The experience offers a form of enjoyable voyeurism, inviting speculation about the lives suggested by carefully arranged interiors.

Living rooms occupy a central role in Fanning’s work. Like the gardens that also appear throughout her paintings, they are curated environments designed for comfort while simultaneously functioning as stages for self-presentation. Sofas, fireplaces, windows, plants, and lamps become compositional anchors within saturated color environments where walls, floors, and furnishings dissolve into unified chromatic atmospheres. Built through thick impasto, these interiors hover between abstraction and representation, suspended in time as though the viewer has arrived just before or after an event.

The Wild West of Thom Ross

June 23 to August 1

Artist Talk | July 2, 4-5pm

Opening Night with the Artist | July 3, 5-7:30pm

In 2005, artist Thom Ross created one of his most ambitious large-scale installations: a dramatic reenactment of the Battle of the Little Bighorn using life-sized painted cutout figures placed directly on the actual Montana battlefield.

The installation transformed Ross’s painted works into a cinematic historical encounter, allowing viewers to physically move among soldiers, horses, and Lakota warriors frozen in moments of action and tension. The project reflected Ross’s longstanding fascination with how the history of the American West continues to be staged, remembered, and reimagined.

For his latest show at the gallery, Ross has turned his attention to another significant event in American history, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Founded in 1883 by William F. Cody, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West was a legendary touring spectacle that traveled across the U.S. and Western Europe for over 30 years and was seen by tens of millions worldwide.

With hundreds of performers, live animals, and dramatic storytelling, tthe show delivered such a thrilling and immersive experience that many viewers likely believed they were witnessing the “real” American West coming alive before their eyes.

Ross’s paintings reinterpret this sepia-toned history with bold color, expressive energy, and narrative depth, capturing both the theatrical spectacle and its more introspective undertones. He explores the blurred boundaries between fact and fiction while inviting viewers to reconsider how myths of the American West are constructed and perpetuated.

This summer, we commemorate six years of presenting one of today’s most collected contemporary photographers, David Yarrow. For more than two decades, the British photographer has been creating evocative images of the world’s most iconic personalities, sporting events, and endangered wildlife. In his ever-evolving series, Storytelling, Yarrow takes his work to the next level through tales of adventure, and misadventure, often utilizing iconic backdrops, recognizable characters, and trained animals. Whether poignant, dramatic, or provocative, the images are always epic. Yarrow’s loweditioned works are available in two sizes: standard and large (or more aptly described as big and huge).

Other artists on display: Bill Barrett, Duke Beardsley, Russell Chatham, Edward Curtis, Jan Grotenberg, Gordon McConnell, Joan Mitchell, Ken Pekoe, KOLLABS, Pitar, Billy Schenck, Fritz Scholder, Gary Traczyk, Theodore Villa, Andy Warhol, and more.

Through professional culinary training, community education, and unique dining experiences, SVCI has become an integral part of the Wood River Valley’s vibrant food culture.

At the heart of the organization is SVCI’s one-year professional training program, which combines classroom instruction with paid industry externships at leading restaurants throughout the region. As a nonprofit culinary school, SVCI provides students with handson training, mentorship from accomplished chefs, and a pathway to rewarding careers in the culinary and hospitality industries.

Led by Education Director Jorge de la Torre and Culinary Director Chef Paul Brown, SVCI also serves the broader community through year-round cooking classes, chef dinners, guest chef experiences, and special events designed to inspire culinary curiosity and bring people together around the table.

This July, SVCI is delighted to welcome back acclaimed food writer, cookbook author, and educator Cynthia Nims for a special series of culinary classes. A longtime friend of the institute, Nims is known for her engaging teaching style, deep knowledge of regional ingredients, and ability to make sophisticated cooking techniques approachable for home cooks. Her July offerings include Flavors of Brittany, an exploration of the cuisine and traditions of France’s celebrated coastal region, and Expanding Seafood Horizons, a class designed to build confidence and creativity when preparing seafood at home. Her everpopular Food Trivia Night will also return, offering a lively evening of culinary knowledge and friendly competition.

SVCI is also proud to once again offer its popular Symphony Picnic Basket Program during the annual Sun Valley Music Festival. Created by Chef Paul Brown, this year’s collection features eight distinctive picnic menus crafted to complement an evening of world-class music.

Whether attending a class with Cynthia Nims, enjoying a Symphony Picnic Basket, or participating in one of SVCI’s many culinary events, guests help support the future of culinary education in the Wood River Valley.

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops & ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials, and much more.

In the bar, enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 16 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, flatiron steak bearnaise, rack of lamb, ribeye steak, butternut squash ravioli, Manchester Farms quail, BBQ baby back ribs, vegan noodle bowl, Wagyu beef meatloaf, pasta Portofino, baked brie en croute, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.

Much of our grilling is done over a live mesquite fire. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry and seafood.

With an award-winning wine list that complements the wonderful food, summer nights on the beautiful outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

The Cellar Pub

Head down the stairs and you’re instantly in one of Ketchum’s classic rites of passage—a traditional pub energy hit with the perfect pint of Guinness waiting at the bottom. The Cellar’s patio hums in summer, but inside is where the magic happens: locals, visitors, and ski bums packed around wooden tables, digging into Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or the legendary Old-Fashioned Bar Burger.

Late-night? Even better. The full bar is stacked with draft beers and daily drink-and-shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia cover the walls, giving the whole place that lived - in, good -times - happen - here feel. Wander to the back and you’ll find booths made for storytelling, a free full - size shuffleboard table that’s probably older than half the crowd, and a Big Buck Hunter arcade game. You don’t just leave The Cellar Pub with a full belly—you leave with a story.

Michel’s Christiania

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from former owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, you will enjoy French cuisine

that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne.
