and Danny Thompson, the memorial celebrates its 50th anniversary this month with a two-day tournament, concert, auction gala, and other activities. Belonging requires reflection. Our guest writer, Karen Day, has written a poignant piece about Idaho’s Indigenous history and personal identity. Her message about who originally shaped the land we all get to love is amplified by her Citizens’ Sacajawea Project, giving the community the opportunity to help erect a statue of Sacajawea in front of the Boise Capitol.

To belong is to be human. We are all connected by the universal thread of belonging—the need to be part of a community, a project, a vision. Some of us seek to belong through our work, family, creative pursuits, music, art, sports, the great outdoors, or through a shared meal. Our August issue of SVPN offers a handful of ways to connect with the vibrant communities across the Valley. It also offers a look towards the memorable legacies that have provided locals and visitors with a deep sense of belonging. Michel Rudigoz is remembered for his epic contributions as a coach of the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team, a sports broadcaster, and owner of the Christiania Restaurant & Bar. His greatest impact was the way he made others feel; connected and eager to laugh. His memory swells in the hearts of many. We highlight two local culinary institutions: The Pioneer Saloon owned by Duffy Witmer and The Sawtooth Club owned by Tom Nickel. These distinctly Western establishments have become treasured places to dine, and more importantly places to gather, celebrate, and swap stories with the iconic owners. The fine arts scene in Ketchum continues to thrive, and Gail Severn Gallery has become one of the landmark spaces for art in Ketchum. Owner Gail Severn celebrates 50 phenomenal years, marking five decades of elevating emerging and established artists’ work and becoming a gathering place for the community to experience the power of art. For three days, artists across the Wood River Valley will open their studios for the public during the 2026 Artist Studio Tour. The event blurs the lines between artist and art, provoking visitors to explore through thoughtful conversation and quiet observation. Don’t miss the exhibits at the Sun Valley Museum of Art this month or in Ketchum’s galleries showcasing local and international artists. Live music lovers will enjoy an inspiring interview with Johnny Gourley, the founder and lead singer of the band Portugal. The Man. In anticipation of the band coming to the Sun Valley Pavilion on September 6, we explore the motivation behind the band’s anthems, including social activism, human rights, and the environment. Our featured property is a new mixed-use building inspired by Ketchum’s history. The Fourth + Main project is located on a prominent corner in the heart of downtown Ketchum and is intentionally designed to reflect the character of Sun Valley’s past. It will encompass five individually designed luxury residences as well as prime ground-floor spaces for local businesses to occupy. The project demonstrates how new construction can honor a vibrant town, without redefining it. Peruse the SVPN Dining Guide that elevates the best of the Valley’s culinary offerings. It’s impossible not to find a mouthwatering place to enjoy each meal this summer, from cocktails to light fare to five-course dinners that will not be forgotten. To belong is to show up. And there is not a more beautiful place to show up than Sun Valley, alongside and in memory of the people who have made it what it is today.

Her fascination with food has provided endless opportunities for her photography to appear in cookbooks, magazines, and advertising campaigns worldwide. She is the cocreator and photographer of the coffee table cookbook Ripe: A Fresh, Colorful Approach to Fruits and Vegetables. When not behind the camera, she is creating nourishing meals for her family.

SABINA DANA PLASSE

is a writer, publicist, and avid traveler who has spent 30 years at the keyboard crafting stories as a contributing writer and editor. When not writing, she’s watching and reviewing movies, conjuring up ideas, or enjoying snowboarding, hiking, biking, and sunsets at the beach.

LORI WILLIAMS is a

freelance writer, copy editor, former home educator, and fourth-generation Idahoan who has lived in Ketchum since 1986. She is an Idaho Writers Guild award-winning poet and a self-published children’s book author. Besides writing, she loves climbing mountains, family road trips, green tea, and this incredible state.

Indie anthems that bring us home to nature and each other by Sabina Dana Plasse

“It was all based on feeling.” Originally from Wasilla, Alaska, and now based in Portland, Oregon, Portugal. The Man was founded by Johnny Gourley, whose Alaska and Pacific Northwest roots are central to the band’s success and purpose. For over two decades, the band has released numerous albums and songs, including the Grammy Award-winning, timeless “Feel It Still,” which has become their calling card across the world. “This song represents so much of my childhood,” Gourley tells. “My parents were dog-sled mushers. We grew up off the grid in Alaska. We took baths in a tin bathtub. The generator went off at night. We didn’t have power or phones, but we had the radio and that song. We listened to music and sang along on the way to dog-sledding trips, camping trips in the middle of winter, and drives through blizzards.” When asked how “Feel It Still” changed his life, Gourley says, “It was a song I’d been working on for five years before it came out—just little pieces of it. I had this baseline, the Marvelettes’ ‘Mr. Postman’ line that I’d sing and play. That’s how I think music should be written, organically. We have thousands of years of song to draw from, and I feel privileged to interact in Indigenous spaces, around native songs and history.” Gourley’s deep connection to nature and place, especially in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, is interpreted through a cuttingedge indie music approach and style. Its a distinguished sound, vibe, and rhythm that indie music lovers crave and many are fascinated by.

“Portland carries the spirit of Alaska to me,” says Gourley. “I ended up here out of proximity and cost—I could afford closet space where I could write music. It’s got this independent energy. Alaska and Idaho are frontier areas—they embrace a libertarian idea of supporting each other, but I also wanna be left to my business and do my thing.” He adds, “Alaskans are very independent. The people of Idaho embrace this as well. It’s why I’ve always loved playing out here and coming out to these very last frontier areas of America and North America.” ADVOCATING FOR HEALTH, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND THE EARTH

Many musicians have played with Gourley over the years, and the band’s extensive catalog has earned Platinum status, among other accolades. However, each Portugal. The Man album is unique in its approach and construction. The band’s commitment to social change led to the creation of the foundation Pass the Mic, which advocates for human rights, community health, and the environment, with a focus on Indigenous Peoples. In 2021, Gourley’s daughter Frances was diagnosed with a one-in-a-billion genetic disease called DHDDS, and the band established the nonprofit Frances Changed My Life to fund critical research to uncover new treatments and therapies for kids with rare diseases. I was only 18 years old when I was recruited for my first field operation for the United States Secret Service. There was a background check, briefing, and training on the mission. Six agents were embedded in the semi-crowded outdoor venue to assist in case something went wrong. My role was to meet a utility vehicle at one edge of the gathering, take possession of a proprietary equipment package, and transport it to a second vehicle. I was in position on time, there was brief delay, then I got the go-ahead signal. The 30-pound package contained approximately 14 tapered launching cylinders with variable trajectories, a payload compartment for projectiles, and ancillary guidance tools. I made my way quickly through the main populated area without incident and located the second vehicle. An agent popped open the trunk and waited as I secured a waterproof cover he provided. I placed the package in the trunk; he snapped the lid down smartly, followed by a curt nod. The vehicle whisked away, occupants hidden behind mirrored windows. Mission accomplished. I had carried President Gerald Ford’s golf clubs from his golf cart to his armored limousine.

Killebrew teamed up with eastern Idaho congressman Ralph Harding and nascent Sun Valley owner Earl Holding to create the Danny Thompson Memorial.

This was in 1977, at a cancer research benefit and golf tournament still held annually 50 years later. Minnesota Twins slugger, Harmon Killebrew (573 career homeruns), had lost a friend, 29-yearold shortstop Danny Thompson, to leukemia. Killebrew, from Payette, Idaho, teamed up with eastern Idaho congressman Ralph Harding and nascent Sun Valley owner Earl Holding to create the Danny Thompson Memorial. They were swinging for the fences and secured the participation of President Ford, Speaker of the House Tip O’Neal, and other politicians. Pro sports icons showed up along with top Hollywood stars. Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio were gallery favorites while photographers tried to get bald actor Telly Savalas in focus with Bald Mountain in the background. Adults loved hobnobbing and kids saw the legends in their sports trading cards come to life.

A good time, yes, but the heart of it all remains providing enduring support for cancer research and treatment. Killebrew himself succumbed to esophageal cancer and the event is now called the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial (KTM). Progress is being made thanks to the organization and other fundraisers, but the scourge threatens all. Many of us, personally or through friends and family, are challenged by the disease in some way. So we continue Sun Valley’s 50-year tradition, fighting the good fight against cancer. 

SACAJAWEA’S LEGACY A Lemhi Shoshone legend reminds us of what it means to be a native Idahoan by Karen Day

Let’s be honest about what it means to be a “transplant” trying to pass as an Idahoan. For most of us, especially Pacific Coast immigrants like me, this means negotiating politically tense conversations, a four-wheel drive vehicle that may never encounter the actual wilderness, and the eventual awakening that no amount of huckleberry pie or fly fishing buys an admission ticket. Born Idahoans have a sixth sense for it—they can smell a Californian across a Costco parking lot. It’s scorn, but with a fond eyeroll. My apologetic invader complex collapses, however, when I think about the actual history of who belongs to this ground. In truth, the oldest, least negotiable “native Idahoan” crown belongs to several Native American tribes, the most famous member being a 15-year-old girl. Enter Sacajawea, born in 1788, in Salmon, Idaho. If you strip away the red-white-and-blue myths and academic arguments over how Sacajawea is or is not memorialized in the expedition journals, coins, and museums, some astonishing facts emerge. In 1805, Jefferson’s Corps of Discovery was crossing unknown territory, running out of time and food, and in need of horses. A pregnant, illiterate teenager, kidnapped years earlier from Idaho by the Hidatsa tribe of North Dakota, proved to be the only person capable of saving the expedition from starving. Her recognition of her brother, Chief Cameahwait, turned strangers into friends gifted with horses, guidance, and survival beyond the River of No Return. Historian Stephen Ambrose confirms in his book, Undaunted Courage, that without the Lemhi Shoshone, the expedition might as well have turned back. Jefferson had warned them not to risk death. In other words: Sacajawea walked across 2,000 miles of brutal wilderness, in moccasins, pregnant or carrying a baby, and saved the lives of 33 men. 56

The reward her tribe received for that debt was disappearance. In 1907, little more than a century after she saved the men who mapped this land for taking, the Lemhi Shoshone were forced from their homeland and marched to the Fort Hall Indian Reservation—the “Lemhi Trail of Tears.” Of the more than 5,315 people enrolled at Fort Hall today, only about 500 descend from the Lemhi Shoshone. Today, as a minority in our country’s imposed Native American diaspora, the AgaiDika language survives only through aging elders and limited research. But this isn’t a guilt trip—it’s an introduction. A living rebuttal to indigenous obscurity is Idaho’s Rose Ann Abrahamson. She is the great-great-great-niece of Sacajawea through Chief Cameahwait, and the great-great-granddaughter of Chief Tendoy, the last Lemhi chief before removal. Rose Ann has carried her tribe’s story to the Smithsonian, to a meeting with President Clinton, into the U.S. Mint’s design of the Sacagawea dollar, and back to Salmon as a founder of the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural, and Educational Center. She

is among the last people alive to speak the language her ancestors spoke to Lewis and Clark. It is fitting, then, that Rose Ann is now calling for a bronze statue of Sacajawea next to Lewis and Clark, Twisted Hair, and eight statues of male politicians at the Idaho Capitol in Boise. This is where I come into the story again. For 20 years, I walked by those men in bronze, wondering if they would be standing there without Sacajawea. After a trip to the National Native American Museum in D.C. where she was again invisible, I decided it was time for a change of scenery in Idaho. Aligning with Rose Ann, tribal familial descendants, and Sacajawea Center supporters, we formed the Citizens’ Sacajawea Project. Together, we are erecting a Sacajawea statue next to Lewis and Clark and Twisted Hair in front of the Boise Capitol. The State of Idaho has agreed and all we need is $150,000 in taxdeductible donations. For me, Sacajawea has redefined what it means to be an Idahoan. My four-wheel drive remains relatively untested, but now there is another kind of belonging available—to anyone, anywhere, who

In a time when Ketchum’s past becomes more obscure among modern developments, luxury condos, and wider highways, historic establishments become more treasured. Two beloved Main Street icons have aged well, transcending their commercial purpose to become a foundational element of local culture and lore. Together, they assure a steady rhythm of western spirit reminiscent of classic Idaho. Cheers to the guardians of two legendary institutions and their enduring rhythm and presence.

THE PIONEER SALOON It’s true what they say. If you haven’t eaten at the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum. We all knew this 80-year-old historic landmark was an American classic even before the James Beard Foundation named it so last year. Since it first opened its doors in the 1940s as a gambling casino, it has had many identities. It has been a bar, meeting hall, dry goods store, and since the 1960s, a full-service restaurant. The current version dates to 1972, when owner Duffy Witmer was an employee who bussed and washed dishes here. In 1986, he and then wife, Sheila, purchased the restaurant outright, and today, this town treasure remains a cherished family legacy, deeply rooted in Ketchum and its past. Witmer attributes the Pioneer’s legacy to his predecessors, the fate that brought him to restaurant proprietorship, thousands of Pioneer employees and guests, and a lot of magic. “It’s not my magic, it’s the magic of the restaurant,” Witmer says. “You can’t believe the stories and miracles that have happened in here. Inside “the Pio,” as it’s affectionately known, is pure rustic and western charm. The walls are covered with museum-quality artifacts, from Winchester bullet boards and birchbark canoes to Ernest Hemingway’s favorite gun. Western posters, sculptures, and animal mounts (including the largest buffalo head in the world) make every visit memorable. New to the collection is a massive grizzly bear shot with a bow in Alaska and fishing creels more than 100 years old with Indian lures attached. “I lost a little space installing the bear, but he’s one of a kind and kids love to have their picture taken in front of it,” says Witmer. It’s a rare occurrence, but the restaurant’s menu has been updated as has the façade, including the installation of 100-year-old glulam timbers designed to create a more classic old saloon aesthetic. “I just keep polishing the legacy, that’s all,” says Witmer. At the Pio, it’s not complicated. “Our formula is simple: atmosphere, quality of food, and service,” Witmer shares. The new menu includes budget-friendly options, from a $9.95 5-ounce hamburger with a free 16-ounce fresh lemonade or a $14.95 10-ounce hamburger with a free draft beer. THE SAWTOOTH CLUB Inside The Sawtooth Club, time-worn walls of knotty pine and a well-polished wood bar harbor decades of stories. When it was built in 1935, it housed one of the first gambling establishments in town. Shortly thereafter, it operated as an upscale restaurant and bar and was named after the Sawtooth Mountains to the north of the valley. Though it changed names and ambiance several times, current owner Tom Nickel reclaimed the original when he purchased the restaurant in 1986 from Ron Geuin. “I did consider naming it the Union Pacific Bar and Grill, but that was promptly rejected,” laughs Tom. For 40 years, it has remained authentically Ketchum, but with a touch of sophistication to forge a space that is both western and cosmopolitan. The brick façade, with a classy second-floor outdoor terrace (added after a destructive fire) warmly invites patrons inside, where mountain memorabilia adorn the historic walls and a rugged rock fireplace anchors the main floor to host locals and visitors. Ernest Hemingway was known to frequent The Sawtooth Club, feeling that it was here where he could talk with men of kindred spirits. It was not uncommon in these establishments for sheepherders and cattlemen to mix with skiers, celebrities, and Hollywood stars. You can still try the same cocktail Hemingway would order, named the ‘Hemingway Daiquiri,’ true to the daiquiri he discovered in Havana, Cuba, back in 1939. McQueen was also a regular who daringly hopped behind the bar to pour drinks and shoot stories. Today, the Sawtooth simply offers unpretentious fine dining, serving the same mix of clientele as in Hemingway’s day. In the kitchen, the restaurant’s mesquite-wood-fire grill was the first of its kind in Idaho and remains a signature element. Entrée options extend far beyond traditional steakhouse fare, yet reflect the heart of Idaho with fresh ruby-red trout, wild game, racks of lamb, ribs, plus vegetarian fare and more. THE MICHEL WE KNEW

Over the past few weeks, many beautiful tributes have been written about Michel Rudigoz. Most have deservedly focused on his extraordinary career as coach of the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team, his Emmy Award-winning contribution to Olympic television coverage, and the remarkable legacy he left on both skiing and sports broadcasting. Scotty McGrew’s tribute for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation was, in my opinion, one of the finest obituaries I have ever read. Scotty knew Michel as well as almost anyone outside of his beloved wife, Ellie Ellis, and through his words he somehow gave the entire valley its own memories back. Rather than revisit those accomplishments, I’d like to share the Michel I was fortunate enough to know over the past 15 years. The Michel who made every room he entered better.

At the height of his powers, Michel’s Christiania Restaurant & Bar wasn’t simply somewhere you went for superb French food, impeccable cocktails, and an exceptional cellar of French wines *naturellement.* You went because Michel was there. His restaurant was his home. The moment you walked through the door, it became yours too. Whether you’d been dining there for 20 years or it was your first visit, Michel somehow made you feel as though you’d been coming forever. Within minutes, you weren’t another reservation, you were a part of the family. Guests would actually wait for Michel to reach their table. Not because they needed anything, but because they wanted a moment with him. He worked a dining room better than anyone I’ve ever known. Every evening he’d weave from table to table, greeting old friends, making new ones, and somehow leaving everyone convinced they’d just had the best conversation of the night. Then you’d hear it. That unmistakable laugh. Michel was a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. His love of France, food, wine, skiing, and people came through every conversation in that unmistakable French accent that, despite decades in America, never lost its roots.

the smallest details reminds me of another story. One evening I asked Michel how he’d managed to win an Emmy Award. “Justin... come with me,” he said while marching me away from my dinner table to the display case near the restaurant entrance where his Emmy sat. He explained that while coaching the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team, television crews were setting up cameras for the alpine races. “The cameras... they were all wrong,” he shared. So he showed them where they should be, closer to the gates and lower down the mountain to show the race from the athlete’s perspective instead of the spectator’s. They listened and the coverage changed. That broadcast won an Emmy. The food carried his personality too. One year during the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, we were filming Chef Laurent demonstrating the restaurant’s famous potato gratin. Laurent carefully layered garlic, thyme, and rosemary while explaining every step with classic French precision. Michel wandered over, looked at the dish, grabbed another handful of garlic and scattered it across the top. “Laurent hates when I do this,” he said with a grin. “But eet ees the flavour I want. And eet ees the aroma people smell when they walk into ze restaurant. That ees what makes them feel they are in France. Usually I do eet when he isn’t looking.” Then he erupted in laughter and walked away, leaving Chef Laurent staring at the gratin in theatrical disbelief. It was vintage Michel. Cheeky, confident, usually correct. That obsession with svpn-mag.com

and I stood there staring at the trophy wondering what had just happened. Later I realized the Emmy wasn’t really the story. Michel had a Forrest Gump quality about him. Extraordinary things seemed to happen because he walked into situations, saw what everyone else had missed, offered his opinion without hesitation, and then carried on as though nothing remarkable had happened. That was Michel. Another story captures him just as perfectly. About six years ago, Michel invited me to present to the Sun Valley Dining Association, which he had helped found alongside many of the valley’s leading restaurants and the resort. He believed the valley deserved better storytelling about its food scene. I remember finishing my presentation. Silence. The kind that immediately makes you question every word you’ve just said. Then Michel leaned back. “Well,” he said, “if none of you want to do this, then I will simply no longer be involved. So... do what you want.” It wasn’t dramatic nor a threat. It was simply Michel telling everyone exactly where he stood.

Over the years, Michel became the connective tissue of Sun Valley’s restaurant community. He constantly visited fellow restaurateurs because he genuinely believed they should support one another.

Within moments, discussion filled the room and soon every restaurant had voted yes. Looking back, Michel never needed to tell people what to think. He’d earned the kind of respect that made everyone stop and listen when he spoke. As everyone left, he wandered over, grinned, and delivered one final instruction. “Justin... now make sure you don’t fuck it up,” he said laughing. Thankfully, we didn’t. Over the years, Michel became the connective tissue of Sun Valley’s restaurant community. He constantly visited fellow restaurateurs because he genuinely believed they should support one another. I’d often join him and Ellie at Cristina’s, the Grill at Knob Hill, Enoteca, and other valley favorites. Competition interested him far less than community. Another passion of his was jazz. Every Jazz Week, the Christiania became one of the liveliest rooms in town. Family and friends crowded around the Steinway piano, filling the restaurant with music and laughter. Then Michel would decide the band needed... a duck. As an avid duck hunter, he’d produce his duck call and enthusiastically accompany accomplished musicians with remarkably authentic duck noises. It should never have worked. Somehow, it always did. Like another handful of garlic, it was one more flourish that somehow became uniquely Michel. One of my favorite projects was bringing Michel together on film with another Sun Valley institution, Duffy Witmer of The Pioneer Saloon. My idea was

simple: put two legendary restaurateurs in a room and let them talk. Michel immediately called Duffy himself. On filming day, our crew barely had to do anything. The two men swapped stories, teased each other, and effortlessly wandered through decades of Sun Valley history. When we packed up, someone on the crew summed it up perfectly, saying, “That was easy.” It was like striking a match, stepping back five yards, and watching the fireworks. If you scan the QR code on this page, you’ll see exactly what I mean. It captures two men who understant that hospitality is never just about serving food. It is about creating memories. My only regret is there is one story we planned together that we didn’t get to finish: Michel’s steak frites, or more accurately, the frites. Michel could spend an hour explaining why perfect French fries were one of the true measures of a great restaurant, right alongside an omelet or a perfectly soft-boiled egg. He wanted to introduce me to the Idaho farmer who grew his potatoes. We’d planned the photo shoot, but life simply got in the way. Looking back, maybe that story didn’t need to be written after all, because it was never really about potatoes. It was about Michel. Someone who believed every detail mattered because every guest mattered. Michel Rudigoz lived generously. He was a coach, an Emmy winner, a restaurateur, a hunter, a jazz lover, a mentor, a friend, a husband to Ellie, a father to Jean Christophe ”Biche” Rudigoz and Franck Rudigoz, and Bon-Papa to his five grandchildren: Milo, Harper Mae, Ethan, August, and Zoe. But titles never explained Michel. People did. Stories did. Rooms did. Laughter did. I’d like to think he’s still doing exactly what he always did best. Working

But somehow, I have a feeling heaven has become a much livelier place since you arrived. 

Sawtooth Salmon Festival celebrates the homecoming run

The return of the salmon to their natal spawning streams in the Sawtooth Valley represents one of the most magnificent feats in all of nature. Driven by instinct and surviving solely on stored body fat and muscle for energy, the salmon swim 900 miles from the Pacific Ocean and climb 6,500 feet in elevation to spawn in the exact stream where they were hatched. The journey involves navigating eight major dams, battling powerful currents, scaling waterfalls, and dodging hungry predators. Salmon runs are declining year after year in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA), and the fish are currently on a path of slow but certain extinction. It is estimated that fewer than 1,000 wild chinook and about 200 Redfish Lake sockeye, perhaps 20 of which might be wild, are expected to return to the Sawtooth Valley. The run continues to ignite a sense of awe and wonder each year. The Sawtooth Salmon Festival was created 25 years ago to champion the

salmon return with a free community event designed to promote education and preservation. Hosted by Idaho Rivers United (IRU) and the Sawtooth Interpretive Historical Association (SIHA), the festival takes place over three days, and includes salmon viewing tours, tribal dances, expert talks, kids activities, live music, artists, vendors, and more. “Our primary goal is public education and what’s needed now to restore abundant salmon populations to local waters,” says IRU board member Tom Stuart. “Wild chinook, sockeye, and steelhead are essential to the ecology, culture, history, and vitality of the Stanley Basin and the SNRA.” August is the historical peak of adult salmon returning to the headwaters and the Saturday morning salmon tours are a definite highlight. “There is so much to see and learn throughout this weekend,” says SIHA Executive Director Lin Gray. “We hope folks will come out and join us.”  80

In today’s world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by conflicting health advice. If you’ve ever wondered, “Whom should I trust?” you’re not alone. Many people encounter different recommendations on the same topic, especially around vaccines, new treatments, or trending wellness ideas. Maybe you’ve seen two different articles about the same topic or heard conflicting advice from friends and online sources. The good news is that there are practical ways to make sense of what you’re hearing and to feel more confident in your decisions. “Patients come in every day with thoughtful questions about something they’ve seen or heard,” says Leigh Morse, MD, Family Medicine at St. Luke’s Wood River. “That’s a good thing. It means they’re engaged in their health.”

WHY DOES HEALTH ADVICE DIFFER? There are a few reasons you may hear different perspectives. First, information is everywhere. It’s shared across websites, podcasts, social media platforms, and increasingly, AI tools. While much of it can be helpful, not all of it is accurate or tailored to you. What works for one person may not be right for another. Age, medical history, lifestyle, and personal preferences all play a role. Nowadays, anyone can post advice online regardless of their qualifications, which can make it harder to tell what’s credible and what’s not. It is important to know that there is a lot of misleading information out there. “Social media and even AI can be great starting points,” Morse says. “But they shouldn’t be your only source. It’s important

to check what you’re seeing and talk with someone who understands your individual health.” Science is constantly evolving, causing medical recommendations to change as researchers discover more. What was considered best practice a few years ago may be updated as new evidence becomes available. It also helps to consider the quality of the evidence behind recommendations. “Healthcare is always advancing,” Morse says. “When guidance changes, it’s usually because we have better, more complete information, not because anyone was trying to mislead patients before.” svpn-mag.com

HOW TO SPOT RELIABLE INFORMATION Understanding why advice differs is one step. The next is knowing how to evaluate what you’re seeing. When you come across a new health claim, a few simple checks can help you evaluate it.  Look at the source. Trusted organizations, such as national health agencies, medical associations, and established health systems, base their information on solid research and expert reviews.  Be cautious with quick fixes. Claims that sound too good to be true often are. Medicine rarely offers one-size-fits-all solutions.  Consider whether it applies to you. Your health history is unique. Information that helped someone else may not be right for your situation.

“Bringing what you’ve found into your appointment is one of the most helpful things you can do,” Morse says. “We can look at it together and talk through what applies to you and what doesn’t.”

IT’S OKAY TO ASK QUESTIONS Some people hesitate to bring up information they’ve found online. They may worry about being judged or dismissed. But open conversations are a key part of good care. “There’s no such thing as a wrong question,” Morse says. “We would much rather talk through your concerns than have you leave unsure or worried.” A strong relationship with your primary care provider is built on trust and communication. You should feel comfortable asking for clarification, sharing concerns, and even challenging something you don’t fully understand. “Healthcare works best when it’s a partnership,” Morse adds. “Your voice matters.”

PREPARING FOR YOUR VISIT Appointments can feel short, especially if you have several questions. A little preparation can help you make the most of your time.  Write down your questions in advance. This helps you stay focused and ensures you don’t forget anything important.  Bring what you’ve seen. Whether it’s an article, a screenshot, or a note about something you heard, sharing the exact source helps your provider respond more clearly.  Prioritize your top concerns. If time is limited, focus on the issues that matter most to you.  Consider bringing a support person. A trusted friend or

family member can help you listen, ask questions, and remember the discussion afterward. Knowing how to start the conversation can also make things easier. Here are a few types of questions that invite collaboration rather than confrontation. They signal that you’re looking to understand, not argue, and they can help your provider respond thoughtfully. “I read something recently that made me curious. Can we talk about whether it applies to me?” “I saw this online and wasn’t sure what to make of it. This takes a multifaceted approach, and while everyone wants to know the quick hacks and secrets (and there are some), true skin health and care starts from a solid foundation of a lifestyle and health/skin care strategy. Of course, there are also a few of my favorite “hacks” that I list below to accelerate results.

SKIN HEALTH BEGINS WITHIN Your skin is a reflection organ. It is the largest organ and reflects the health of your internal organs and your nervous system: the kidneys, liver, pancreas, and cortisol levels. What you see on the surface is a direct output of what’s happening inside, including inflammation levels, hydration status, mitochondrial health, toxicity, nutrient reserves, and level of nervous system regulation. So, before we talk about what we’re putting on your skin, let’s talk about what we’re putting in your body, including the environment you live in. ACCELERATE THE GLOW Once the internal foundation is solid, it’s time to layer in the therapies that accelerate results.

MY FOUNDATIONAL SKINCARE FAVORITES The foundational supplements I recommend for summer skin are fundamental in my own routine. There are specific brands and dosages I find very effective. Vitamin C and zinc are at the top—zinc alone is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions including wound healing, oil regulation, and skin repair. Glycine is one of the most underrated amino acids for skin health. It’s a primary building block of collagen, and most of us are chronically deficient in it. Supplementing glycine is one of the most affordable, high-return things you can do for your skin, your sleep, and your cellular repair. Magnesium glycinate rounds out the foundation as it is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions, and helps regulate inflammation, supports quality sleep (where most of your skin repair happens), and buffers the stress response that accelerates aging. Vitamin D3-K2 is absolutely essential; especially in summer when sun exposure goes up, it is important to balance this. D3 supports immune regulation and skin barrier integrity; K2 ensures that calcium is directed where it belongs. A landmark space for propelling fine art in Ketchum by Sabina Dana Plasse

When Gail Severn opened the Gail Severn Gallery 50 years ago in Ketchum, she was dedicated to contributing to the growth and sustainability of a vibrant art scene. Five decades later, the gallery’s space rivals that of any major city art gallery. It is a place where community members can gather, where the work of emerging and established artists can be experienced, and serves as a space to inspire art collectors across the Valley. An Idaho native who was fresh out of the University of Idaho, Severn was hired by Bill and Glenn Janss, the previous owners of the Sun Valley Resort, to work at the newly debuted Sun Valley Center of the Arts, now the Sun Valley Museum of Art. There, she assisted with multiple departments, taught fiber arts classes, shared a studio with printmaker David Wharton, worked with Jim Romberg in the ceramics department, and collected photography, which kept her engaged with the Center’s photographers. “It was a wonderful training ground to work with an institution in its early years,” reveals Severn. “Everyone who came here was amazing. It was a family setting, with everyone who taught. Being with the Janss’s was special because they always had dinners with all the artists and instructors. Back then, Mary Rolland oversaw exhibitions at the Potato Gallery. It was perfect.”

Recognizing the arts’ potential to attract a broader audience to Sun Valley, the Janss’s asked Severn, who had also been framing for Nicki Foster, to open a gallery. Severn took over the business when Foster retired, and because of her deep love of photography, she named it the Images Gallery. Understanding the Valley’s need for galleries, Sun Valley philanthropist and developer Ed Dumke and NFL record-holding kicker Tom Dempsey helped Severn open her first space. svpn-mag.com

“This type of forward-thinking really speaks to the compassion and attitude of people in the community who were starting businesses and constructing buildings and who had the financial wherewithal to be generous,” shares Severn. “In general, it was a very different time. I spent 10 amazing years in that location.”

After her fathers’ passing, Severn bought the lots where her gallery now stands. Sun Valley architect Janet Jarvis designed the gallery and helped Severn bring her vision to life. She also received support from co-signers and bank assistance, which especially helped in the early days of her gallery when the slack shoulder-season lack of business was so severe. “I’ve always been a risk-taker, and so many of our early artists were very exciting for the gallery,” says Severn. “The focus had mainly been on landscape and the natural world, including contemporary artists such as Tony Berlant, who is having a show during this 50-year celebration. Berlant participated in major exhibitions alongside early pop artists like Roy Lichtenstein. Things started to grow, and the word spread that Sun Valley was great for shows for contemporary artists.” Severn created an atmosphere that was the opposite of the pompous gallery culture of a major city, yet a place where collectors and art aficionados could enjoy the work and the artist. To this day, artists who exhibit in Sun Valley often come to their openings from across the country and around the world. Gail Severn Gallery has become a recognizable name in the contemporary art gallery scene in the West. With the formation of the Sun Valley Gallery Association, which served as a shared community for gallery expenses and business, and the addition of Gallery Walks, Severn has seen growth in svpn-mag.com

She has also been a key figure in connecting Sun Valley to national and international arts organizations and programs, including the global Arts in Embassies program and Americas for the Arts. “Community is everything,” says Severn. “This includes hosting small singing groups such as the Caritas Chorale choir, allowing nonprofits to use the gallery space for fundraisers, supporting larger organizations that are important on a national level, and hosting exhibitions that showcase artists who care about water issues in the West, such as Joseph Rossano and Tony Foster. Many artists care deeply about our planet.” She adds, “It all evolved organically into a space with so much versatility, including weddings and festival dinners. It feels good to host a diversity of community members and their events.” For 50 years, Severn has been providing emerging and established artists with an exhibition space and a commitment to uplifting their work and legacy. My job as an intuitive painter is to take risks. I begin with fast gestural marks. Sometimes these marks act as scaffolding, which supports shape, line, and color. Bright Knight: The Life & Legacy of Adam West Through August 14

This pop-up exhibition celebrates the enduring impact of the beloved actor Adam West, best known for his iconic portrayal of Batman. In partnership with the City of Ketchum and organized by the West family and the Sun Valley Museum of Art, the exhibition marks the 60th anniversary of the landmark television series while offering a deeper, more expansive look at West’s life and career. Set in the historic building at Forest Service Park, the show invites visitors to explore West’s journey from his childhood in Walla Walla, Washington, to his rise in Hollywood and his lasting ties to Ketchum, where he was both a cultural figure and a cherished neighbor. Through photographs, memorabilia, video, and personal artworks, the exhibition reveals the breadth of West’s creative pursuits and his lasting cultural influence across generations. Visitors will encounter materials spanning his early acting roles, behind-the-scenes moments from the Batman television series, and later projects including voice work from Family Guy and The Simpsons and his personal paintings. Tony Berlant Internationally known for his innovative collage-based works and a seminal figure in the West Coast Pop movement, Berlant has worked across a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and collage. Tom Hammick Tom Hammick’s solo exhibition of woodblock prints and oil paintings are informed by the artist’s love of poetry, opera, film, and the natural environment. These large-scale narratives unfold within imaginary and mythological dreamscapes that serve as metaphors for the human condition, impermanence, and states of mind. Drawing inspiration from the German Expressionists and British Colorists, Hammick masterfully harnesses the emotional power of color, placing his subjects within expansive surrealist landscapes suffused with vibrant, shifting, and often indescribable hues. Stephen Wilkes America at 250: Through the Lens of Stephen Wilkes August 1 to 31

For more than four decades, Stephen Wilkes (b. 1957, New York) has trained his lens on the American experience. As the United States marks 250 years, his photographs ask us to sit with its complexity. Central to the exhibition is his series Day to Night. From a fixed vantage point, Wilkes photographs iconic landscapes continuously for up to 36 hours, then composites over 1,500 images into a single frame where dawn, midday, dusk, and night coexist. In his own words, each is like a symphony, built slowly from countless individual moments. Wilkes’ Tapestries series is, by his description, the jazz to that symphony: spontaneous in-camera multiple exposures captured in four to eight seconds. Here they are presented as commissioned handwoven textiles, image translated into thread. Completing the show are works from the abandoned Bethlehem Steel plant in Pennsylvania, whose silent ruins speak to the rise and fall of the communities that powered the nation. Where Day to Night and Tapestries find America in its rhythms and textures, Bethlehem Steel finds it in its bones. 196

Each of Dana Piazza’s works begins with a single mark. From there, the Massachusetts-based artist follows a set of rules of his own devising, repeating and adjusting that first gesture across paper, panel, or canvas. Small, unplanned slips enter the sequence and quietly redirect what comes next, so that each mark conditions the one after it and the outcome stays unknown until the work is finished. The accumulation reads as depth and movement, held within a single, deeply saturated hue. Moving between system and accident, Piazza lets order and unpredictability share one surface, tracing chance, discovery, and the passage of time.

Jerry Hadam A meandering track through a snow-covered stream invites viewers to slow down and wander with an inquisitive forest dweller on a winter afternoon. Jerry Hadam’s Tracks allows the snow to quiet the mind while it softens the trail of the animal who passed through the creek. The track suggests a creature neither in a hurry nor hungry, but in exploration. After years of not being able to print from a large body of 4x5-view camera images, Hadam is printing images he has wanted to print for 20 years. This is one of those images. 202

Devin Farrand lives between a cabin in Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains and a warehouse studio in Los Angeles. His metal and marble forms hold the weight of place, labor, and time. Following a residency at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House and Preserve with The Community Library, Farrand returns with new work: watercolors made inside the historic home and monumental outdoor sculptures that translate Hemingway’s prose into material—anodized aluminum, Carrara marble, plated steel. Elemental and deliberate, the work asks what it means to make something permanent from something fleeting.

Silver and gold leaf are embedded throughout her paintings as moments of activation, allowing surfaces to shift and respond to changing light and movement. Elements emerge, disappear, and reappear depending on perspective—echoing the experience of something suddenly catching the eye and becoming impossible to ignore. Through rhythm, reflection, and layered abstraction, Frequency of Seeing invites viewers into a more attentive and sensory-rich way of looking.

At its foundation are vintage photographs from

Edward Curtis’s landmark 30-year project, The North American Indian (1898–1928), offers a powerful visual record of Native American life at the turn of the 20th century. In dialogue with this legacy are iconic prints from Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians series (1986), which reframe Western imagery through the lens of Pop Art, challenging familiar cultural symbols and narratives. Contemporary photographic works by David Yarrow bring cinematic scale and theatrical intensity to the exhibition. Through immersive compositions and dramatic storytelling, Yarrow creates visually striking interpretations of the modern West. The exhibition also features works by Rudi Broschofsky and Theodore Villa, whose bold contemporary approaches blend elements of Pop Art, abstraction, and Western imagery, offering fresh perspectives on the region’s enduring themes. This August, SVCI welcomes back James Beard Award-nominated Chef Kian Lam Kho. Chef Kian is an expert in authentically prepared Chinese cuisine that is rarely found in American Chinese restaurants. Always a special experience, Kho will offer two classes in August, including a “Stir-Frying Demystified” demonstration class where participants will learn essential Wok techniques. And for those who want a hands-on experience, join Chef Kian to learn to make everyone’s Chinese dumpling favorites like shumai, pot stickers, and steamed shrimp dumplings.
