EDITOR’S WELCOME

Up in Stanley, we check in with White Otter Outdoor Adventures’ Doug Fenn in Sunbeam, Idaho (just outside of Stanley), and the excitement of river life, including what’s to eat and happening at the Sunbeam café. In addition, August in Stanley has a full calendar of events for all to enjoy, as summer is still very much in action in the north country.

In this edition of SVPN Magazine, feeling good is definitely what’s in order. We dive into wellness with CENTER on understanding pain and living a fully confident and painfree life. And St. Luke’s has news to share about a cardiology equipment upgrade. We also learn about EXTEN’s dedication to helping individuals achieve optimal health and well-being using IV hydration and vitamin therapy. In addition, find out what’s happening at The Well, Sun Valley’s latest and most inspiring wellness establishment.

THE HEAT IS ON

A Sun Valley summer can have many directions and meanings. It can be a time for reunions, weddings, and milestone celebrations. It can also be a time in nature discovering new peaks, lakes, and trails on foot, biking, or being quiet in nature’s space sans a phone or a laptop. And it can be an endless calendar of epic parties, concerts, festivals, events, openings, and fundraisers. Whatever shape your Sun Valley summer takes, it will be hot, fast, and furious, so take the time to enjoy the beauty surrounding us and care for those who share it with you.

For August, SVPN Magazine embraces the rising temperatures and has a fashion section of swimwear and must-have clothing picks for men and women to enjoy. And with some new outfits, we are excited to show them off for the 2023 summer symphony season with the Sun Valley Music Festival. We look at some concert highlights and musicians, especially those teaching in Sun Valley, and meet the new Associate Conductor, Stephanie Childress. In addition, critic and arts writer Clive Paget picked out some concerts to offer a little more background on two great works that will be performed.

On the cover, SVPN Magazine features the Sun Valley Policy Forum (SVPF) guest speaker, world-renowned writer, and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who last visited Sun Valley in 2009. Learn more about SVPF and Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s October 2, 2023 event at The Argyros in this month’s issue.

For property news, learn about Quigley Farms and why it’s a fantastic location and unique living opportunity in the Wood River Valley. Adding to great living in Sun Valley and perhaps filling up a new home with local art work, our Fine Arts section features the Artist Studio Tour of the Wood River Valley, where working and established artisans throughout the Valley open their studios to share their work and process.

There are new exhibitions and openings in August, including a show at the Gail Severn Gallery with Kathy Moss. Discover how botanicals tell the story of life in her new show, which she will attend. And get ready for the best in American roots music. We connected with The Wood Brothers and The Infamous Stringdusters, performing at River Run Lodge for a Sun Valley Museum of Art summer concert.

SVPN Magazine also prepares for Wagon Days with a preview of one of the area’s most beloved celebrations, bringing us back to our roots and keeping us in awe. Enjoy our Sun Valley Restaurant Dining Guide and peruse properties in our real estate sections that make Sun Valley your home or your special home away from home.

A SUN VALLEY CULINARY INSTITUTE CELEBRATION

Benefit event raises awareness for student recruitment

The Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s (SVCI) Student Summer Kickoff Party on Saturday, June 24, at the Elkhorn Inn in Sun Valley, was a benefit and an opportunity to enjoy delectable summer food created by the SVCI students under the instruction of Chef Joesph Tocci. It was a beautiful evening to start the 2023 summer, which included a night of fundraising, dinner, and dancing with music by DJ Alex to celebrate the culinary students and garner awareness for SVCI’s recruitment and its impact on dining establishments throughout the Wood River Valley.

“The Sun Valley Culinary Institute is where students work to learn and learn to work,” says Mason Family Restaurants founder and owner Scott Mason, who works with SVCI for student externships.

SVCI Executive Director Karl Uri and staff presented the summer kickoff event with chairs Patti and Don McGrath and Jill and Lee Pollock, along with benefactors Corry and Michael Clayville, Linda and Bill Nicholson, Penny and Richard Weiss, and Jana and Jeff Foushee. The Warfield Distillery and Brewery provided drinks and bartending. 

INSPIRING, PROVOCATIVE, AND UT TERLY ESSENTIAL

Ayaan Hirsi Ali returns to Sun Valley

Sun Valley has a great history of drawing extraordinary intellectuals, writers, artists, thinkers, and more who come to discuss the most vital issues of the day. It is a testament to the civic-mindedness and sophistication of Sun Valley’s population that such eminent people come here to share their thoughts with us—and to hear the voices of our community in return.

The Sun Valley Policy Forum (SVPF) strives to keep this tradition alive. SVPF was founded by Mia Benedict and Christina Culver in 2022 to bring exceptional educational programming to the Sun Valley community and visitors from across the nation.

SVPF amplifies the voices of national and international luminaries and rising stars in the world of policy and believes that examining complex ideas and problems head-on is the best way to preserve and strengthen American civil society. Through its programming, SVPF seeks not only to educate and inform but also to inspire greater community participation in addressing the many critical social, economic, and civic challenges our nation faces today.

SVPN SPOTLIGHT
svpn-mag.com 47
48 svpn-mag.com

By bringing eminent and knowledgeable speakers from fields as diverse as economics and the new media to Sun Valley, SVPF hopes to create a hub of learning and engagement for those who want to face these challenges directly. Education is the first step in solving any problem, big or small, which is why it is vital that our community hears from the best and brightest the world has to offer.

SVPF is a non-partisan organization dedicated to upholding the Constitution and American ideals of individual liberty, democracy, and free speech, and it believes that these ideals are the surest guarantor of freedom and the most effective way of providing the opportunity for self-determination for all. SVPF speakers embody these values, and by sharing their insights with the Sun Valley community, SVPF hopes to encourage productive public discourse. For those who want to expand their knowledge about the world to be better equipped to improve it, SVPF provides the perfect educational opportunity.

On October 2, 2023, at The Argyros, SVPF’s next guest speaker is world-renowned writer and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Ms. Hirsi Ali, who last visited Sun Valley in 2009 for

the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, is the author of many bestselling books, including her memoir Infidel (2007), Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now (2015), and most recently, Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women’s Rights (2021).

Ms. Hirsi Ali is also a research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and the founder of the AHA Foundation, with the mission to preserve, protect, and promote Western freedoms and ideals. She is a champion of the ideals promoted by SVPF. As she put it in her July 4 message last month:

“[AHA Foundation’s mission] also means embracing the true spirit of American democracy, which is the cornerstone of the free, Western world.” Indeed, Ms. Hirsi Ali eventually found refuge in America, where she became a citizen in 2013.

Having grown up in several repressive countries, including Somalia, Kenya, and Saudi Arabia, Ms. Hirsi Ali fled to the Netherlands to escape an arranged marriage. Starting as a janitor in the Netherlands, she worked her way up, integrating into Dutch society and eventually becoming a member of the Dutch parliament in 2003.

SVPN SPOTLIGHT AYAAN HIRSI ALI PARTICIPATING IN THE CLARITy COALITION CONFERENCE, SALZBURG, OCTOBER 2022. PHOTO BY RICHARD SCHABETSBERGER svpn-mag.com 49

Despite being the target of several fatwas and receiving several threats to her life, Ms. Hirsi Ali has continued to speak her mind about radical political Islam (as well as many other sensitive issues) in the hope of countering the growth of fanatics by educating people about the importance of Western ideals of enlightenment and liberty.

Ms. Hirsi Ali is dedicated to championing the rights of Muslims to practice their religion and has constantly differentiated between Islamic extremists and moderate Muslims who seek to live their lives as regular and productive members of society. She has often emphasized that many of the victims of radical political Islam are other Muslims, and she boldly stands up for the rights of moderate Muslims alongside liberal Muslim believers.

Ms. Hirsi Ali is a Founding Member of the CLARITy Coalition, which, in its own words, is “a global coalition founded by Muslims, ex-Muslims, academics, scholars,

authors, and activists who stand for peace, democracy, liberty, and secular governance and who are deeply concerned by the continuing threat posed to these values by the actions and demands of Islamists [i.e. Islamic extremists who wish to impose Islam as a theocratic/political ideology] in various places around the world.” SVPF plans to complement Ms. Hirsi Ali’s presentation with a panel on October 2, featuring experts from CLARITy who will discuss radical political Islam and its impact on Western societies so that we can understand how it affects us even here at home.

Another of SVPF’s goals is to bring the Sun Valley community face-to-face with exemplary figures so that we can come and see for ourselves who they truly are in a long-format presentation and live Q&A setting instead of relying on how the media portrays them to form our judgments. For example, one of its recent speakers was former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who shared his first-hand experience of dealing with the various challenges posed to the international order by authoritarian nations such as China and Russia. The moderator and audience were able to ask him tough questions and dig deeper for insight beyond what he had written and said recently.

Ms. Hirsi Ali’s statements are straightforward. She is not afraid to address complex issues with truth and CLARITy. Her unparalleled understanding of the nature of radical political

Most advocates for change have been considered controversial in their time, and Ms. Hirsi Ali is no exception.

Islam, particularly its horrendous treatment of women, makes her voice a vital one in these troubled times, while her commitment to human rights, freedom, and American ideals after the harsh upbringing and many challenges she has faced throughout her life makes her a truly inspiring figure.

Most advocates for change have been considered controversial in their time, and Ms. Hirsi Ali is no exception. SVPF is incredibly proud to welcome her back to Sun Valley. This time, she will speak in a more intimate setting, providing the perfect opportunity for interested citizens to hear her insights on the continuing threat posed by radical political Islam to the West.

With this month marking the first anniversary of the horrific attack on Salman Rushdie by an Islamic extremist in New York last year, Ms. Hirsi Ali’s voice is needed more than ever. Like other SVPF speakers, she will provide unique insights into a major contemporary issue, empowering our community to be a force for good.

Ms. Hirsi Ali believes that to push back against the illiberalism of radical political Islam, Americans first need to truly understand it. That is why she will speak at the SVPF event about the nature of radical political Islam, how its networks and structures have infiltrated Western society, and how to resist it.

This program event will help us better understand how to welcome moderate Muslim neighbors as they assimilate into Western culture and embrace the ideals that make America so strong: freedom of speech, religious liberty, and the right to live freely.

SVPF is excited to provide alternatives to current programming by bringing much-needed sources of insight and experience to Sun Valley. Armed with the knowledge imparted by these inspiring people, Sun Valley can continue to make a real difference for our nation—and the world. SVPF hopes to see you at one of its events soon, and it cannot wait to welcome Ayaan Hirsi Ali back to Sun Valley. 

The SVPF fall event with Ayaan Hirsi Ali takes place on Monday, October 2, at the Argyros Performing Arts Center. For tickets, sponsorships, and more information, visit svpolicyforum.org/ october-2-2023/.

WAGON DAYS RETURNS

A celebration of Ketchum’s Old West heritage

80 svpn- mag.c om
FEATURE svpn-mag.com 81

Sixty-six years ago, in 1958, Ketchum hosted the first annual Wagon Days Parade. What started out as a small and unassuming event rapidly became one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country. The historic event has since emphasized the intrinsic relationship between Ketchum’s Old West roots and the contemporary present.

Wagon Days participants have the opportunity to experience a wide range of events over the course of the Labor Day weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, September 2 and 3, visitors and community members may feast on an annual all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast hosted by the Papoose Club. The Wagon Days parade will follow the breakfast on Saturday afternoon. The 66-year-old parade tradition features horse-drawn carriages, wagons, stagecoaches, and more. The parade also showcases the last remaining ore wagons of their kind in the finale event, the Big Hitch.

“Seeing the Big Hitch make the turn at Sun Valley Road and Main Street is the highlight of the weekend’s activities,” says

Ketchum Mayor Neil Bradshaw. “Every year, as we bring the Lewis Ore Wagons out of storage, I am in awe of their size and majesty.”

These six massive wagons, pulled by a 20-mule jerk line, were commonly used during Ketchum’s mining era. The last of their kind, the wagons, brought to Ketchum by Horace Lewis, were used as freight transportation during the late 1800s. Their humble and large design was used to withstand extreme stress as they traveled across the steep mountain pass of Trail Creek. The “Big Hitch” now resides in the Ore Wagon Museum located in Ketchum. Visitors are welcome to visit the museum through the month of August and into Labor Day weekend.

Wagon Days offers the community a chance to connect with the history of Ketchum and its community members. “Being connected to our history and heritage is important for the future of our beloved town,” says Bradshaw. “Wagon Days takes us back in time to recognize the challenges

of the past, the journey that got us here, and reminds us of our responsibility to be good stewards of our town for generations to come.”

The traditions displayed during Labor Day weekend have been performed for hundreds of years prior. With the help of the City of Ketchum and the community, Wagon Days has continued to grow. The event encourages its participants to appreciate the shared history of the town. The historic wagons offer a look back into the tangible scenes of 1800s Ketchum, but the event offers more than only visual representation. Multi-generational families are also given the opportunity to share their stories with the public.

“I am proud to be a part of the city’s storytelling,” says Sun Valley Events Owner Heather LaMonica Deckard, who has been the main coordinator of Wagon Days for nearly 25 years and continues to develop the event year by year. “I’m honored to work with individuals through the weekend who have such close ties with the history of our small town.”

As a Sun Valley native, Heather’s shared experiences have led to her continual appreciation of and sense of accomplishment with the event.

Along with the parade and breakfast, viewers may attend the Horsemanship & Cultural Performance event located in Festival Meadows on Saturday, September 2. There, individuals from across Idaho will display both cultural and historic performances.

Following the parade, pop over to Ketchum Town Square to enjoy the Wagon Days Street Party. This year Sun Valley Events will showcase Stanley locals Micky & the Motorcars. The band, which performed during Wagon Days nearly 25 years ago, will once again perform their popular country tunes. 

LE T THE MAGIC BEGIN

August at the Sun Valley Music Festival

For nearly 40 years, the Sun Valley Music Festival has presented classical music performances in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Sun Valley, Idaho— the country’s original destination ski resort. Concerts are an exciting social experience where people from all walks of life can enjoy music together. All concerts are free, except for the fundraising Gala Concert—there is truly a musical experience for everyone to enjoy—in the Pavilion or from the lawn.

You’ll hear cornerstones of the classical music repertoire, contemporary works, including music by American and living composers, and pieces that transcend popular culture, including Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. Read more about these two pieces in the following pages by arts writer and critic Clive Paget and also about educators Ellen Sanders and Rudolph Kremer and the Sun Valley Music Festival’s new Associate Conductor, Stephanie Childress.

Mark your calendars, get your picnics ready, and get to know these two groundbreaking orchestral works better before the opening downbeat.

A NE W SUMMER HOME

88 svpn- mag.c om

Sun Valley Music Festival welcomes Stephanie Childress as its Associate Conductor

The Sun Valley Music Festival’s new Associate Conductor, Stephanie Childress, has conducted around the world: from Barcelona to North Carolina, Cambridge to Berlin. This summer, the accomplished young conductor will add Idaho to her already-long resume.

At four years old, Childress attended a performance in France with the British Chamber Orchestra. The fledgling audience member was entranced and began asking for violin lessons.

Playing the violin was at first just a hobby for the young Franco-Brit. She also played sports, enjoyed learning languages, and dreamed of becoming an architect or perhaps a spy.

By the age of 13, though, she was playing in youth orchestras and falling in love with the collective feel of making music with others. She eventually became a BBC Young Musician of the Year competition finalist and went on to study music at St. John’s College Cambridge at the age of 15.

But Childress’s fascination with conducting also grew. She met the talented young conductor Edward Gardner, then music director of the English National Opera, and asked him if she could observe his rehearsals. Remarkably, Gardner agreed. At rehearsals, Childress discovered a love of opera. And she also decided that she wanted to be a conductor. At the age of 15, she stood in front of a group of musicians for the first time.

“I didn’t know about the beat patterns. I wasn’t aware of how to give a proper downbeat,” she says. “Someone just asked me to come up and wave around and see what happened. It was terrifying but also exhilarating.”

Now in her early 20s, Childress chases those two feelings, knowing that anything can happen when a conductor steps onto the stage. “You can unleash something within the musicians and for the audience.”

In 2020, she was the second prize-winner of La Maestra, a women-only conducting competition at the Philharmonie de Paris. That success led to engagements with l’Orchestre de Paris, Paris Mozart Orchestra, and an invitation to take

part in the Conducting Académie of the Festival d’Aix-enProvence. She also made exciting debuts that same season with the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and London Mozart Players.

And while she’s traveled the world over, the young conductor also has strong ties to the U.S. and even to Idaho. Childress most recently served as Assistant Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and as Music Director of its Youth Orchestra—positions that both wrapped up earlier this year.

“Before living in Missouri, the state I’d spent the most time in was Idaho,” she says. “My father is American and has two brothers who live in the north of Idaho. We’d spend the winters there skiing or enjoying the gorgeous weather and scenery during the summer. So, I know Idaho pretty well, which, as a Brit, is quite a funny thing!”

Childress also visited Sun Valley in 2022 for Daniil Trifonov’s Festival performance of Brahms’s first piano concerto.

“It was really quite something. I fell in love with not only the location but also the auditorium and feel of the place. I thought, ‘Gosh, one day, it would be lovely to be a part of this!’ And lo and behold, here we are,” she shares.

“A misconception about music education is that we’re training a generation of artists. We just want people who love music and who want to share it with others.”

This summer, Childress will conduct works at several Festival concerts: Alberto Ginastera’s Variaciones concertantes on August 4; Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony on August 10; Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia , Op. 26 on August 14; and excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty on August 17.

She’ll also be a part of the education programs at the Festival’s Music Institute, a experience that builds on her own passion for furthering the reach of classical music. As an aspiring violinist whose parents didn’t have musical backgrounds, Childress credits her own youth orchestra teachers with helping her to grow into a professional musician.

“These are such formative experiences that really help form the next generation of musicians or at least music lovers,” she says. “A misconception about music education is that we’re training a generation of artists. We just want people who love music and who want to share it with others.”

By mid-September, Childress will be touring again, with dates at the L’Opéra de Paris, Staatoper Hamburg, Glyndebourne, and the North Carolina Symphony. But she’ll make Idaho her home this summer. 

THE RIGHT PL ACE

Festival music educators find their home in Idaho

In 2016, cellist Ellen Sanders was playing her 25th summer season with the Sun Valley Music Festival, at that time called the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. Each summer in Idaho, she also taught in the Festival’s Music Institute for elementary through college undergraduate students, beginning with just one cello student and growing to many.

One day, Sanders found herself eavesdropping on a conversation between Festival Education Director Kim Gasenica and thenBlaine County School District Orchestra Director Rebecca Martin. The two were discussing a job opening at Wood River High School.

“What job opening?” Sanders said, and in the middle of the Summer Season concerts, she applied to become an Orchestra Instructor at Wood River High School, which also allowed her to teach at the Festival’s Music Institute year-round. She’d first come to Idaho from California in 1992, having no idea what the northern state held. “I fell in love with this place,” she says. “And it only took me 25 years to figure out a way to stay.”

Sanders, who grew up in San Diego, had played professionally for almost 30 years in the Bay Area and was ready for a change. “It was great to have the opportunity to move here. And I only got stuck in the snow twice.”

Violinist Rudolph Kremer, a native of North Carolina, tells a similar story. Kremer began his career in 1990 in the Sacramento Symphony before playing in Portugal, San Francisco, Chicago, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh. He traveled to summer festivals each year and first came to Sun Valley in 1995. In 2017, the chance to move to Idaho full-time and teach the violin arose. After so much traveling, Kremer was drawn to the idea of staying in one place.

Sanders is now the String Department Chair for the Festival’s Music Institute and the Wood River Middle School Orchestra Director, and Kremer is Head of Upper Strings. They both continue to perform with the Festival Orchestra every summer, but music education is their year-round focus.

“One of the hardest transitions was to recognize that I wasn’t going to perform as much,” Sanders says of the move, but she was ready for something new.

Kremer also enjoys focusing his time more on education, and he can see improvements in his own playing as a result. “I’m better for having gone back to the basics by proxy,” Kremer says. “I’ve been practicing along with the students, and I’m so much of a better player now.”

“There are fundamentals that you’re reminded of when you’re working with a student,” says Sanders. “You strip away so much, and it helps you as well.”

After school throughout the year, Sanders and Kremer work with with 4th grade through high school students at the Festival’s Community Campus offices in Hailey. Sanders is also now the WRMS Orchestra Director, and Kremer helps out at WRHS. “We have so much fun,” says Kremer. “Most of the kids really, really love it.”

“It’s so important coming out of COVID,” says Sanders. “COVID made it way too challenging for young, developing musicians to sustain their practice by themselves. It’s been so important that they’re together and that they’re reminded that this is a difficult activity, but one that they get to share with their friends, their families, their communities.”

The Festival has seen many students go from these programs on to further training and a lifelong love of music. “We’re excited to get the opportunity to show the kids how important music can be in their lives,” says Gasenica. “Whether they go on and play music or whether they just have a lot of fun and have fond memories of their time here. We’re cultivating that audience of the future, too.”

Sanders and Kremer are great educators living in a place they love. “They are truly amazing,” says Gasenica. “We are so fortunate to have people who are so student-focused and who really care about sharing their love for music.”

“For me, it’s the outdoors,” says Kremer of his love for Sun Valley. He began skiing years ago with his host family and can now regularly be found out on the hiking trails. “I’m a small-town guy, so this is my speed.”

Sanders, meanwhile, is a classic cross-country skier and snowshoer. “I snowshoe right out my back door!” she says. “This is definitely the right place for me.” 

STR AVINSK Y ’S THE RI TE OF SPRING

The modernist masterpiece that rocked the world

How did one of classical music’s biggest scandals become one of its greatest hits? The Rite of Spring, a ballet in two parts with music by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, depicts a succession of pagan rites in which a group of village elders compels a hapless maiden to dance herself to death in a wild fertility ritual. The first performance, which took place in Paris in 1913, would go down in history for all the wrong reasons.

Despite its provocative subject matter, the dress rehearsal went off in relative calm. The progressively minded audience of invited musicians, art lovers, and journalists were essentially onside. The opening night crowd, however, was a different

kettle of fish. Only two weeks earlier, these there-to-be-seen socialites and traditional ballet enthusiasts had tittered at dancers in tennis whites hoofing it up in Debussy’s Jeux. Prepared to be outraged, this time, they were up for a riot.

What confronted them—apart from what Stravinsky later described as Nijinsky’s chorus of “knock-kneed and longbraided Lolitas”—was a score in which ancient Russian folk tunes were manipulated by means of complex musical innovations to produce a wildly unpredictable score that was rich, mysterious, intricate, and often very, very loud.

The evening began calmly, even decorously, with Nijinsky dancing in Les Sylphides. It was with the opening bars of The Rite of Spring that the problems began. As the curtain rose on dancers stamping along to the “Augurs of Spring,” the catcalls and whistling grew to a din. It quickly became impossible for the dancers to hear the music, despite Nijinsky calling out the beat from the wings. “Everything available was tossed in our direction, but we continued to play on,” reported Pierre Monteux, who conducted the premiere.

“These so-called ‘society people,’ unable to see, hear, and feel for themselves, these grown-up children,” sniffed the composer, Florent Schmitt, “could only respond to these splendors, so remote from their feeble understanding, with the foolish hilarity of infants.”

The media didn’t help. Critics, peeved at having been palmed off with tickets to the dress rehearsal, were happy to take Stravinsky and his collaborators down a peg or two. The reviewer for Le Figaro condemned the work as “a laborious and puerile barbarity.” Giacomo

The Rite of Spring manuscript

Igor Stravinsky

who attended the second performance, described the choreography as ridiculous and the music as a cacophony. “The public hissed, laughed–and applauded,” he said, dismissing the score as “the work of a madman.” Nevertheless, there were plenty prepared to hail Stravinsky as “the Messiah we’ve been waiting for since Wagner,” seeing in The Rite a musical future as “new as that burst of sap which it glorifies.”

The first purely orchestral performances of The Rite of Spring took place in 1914, by which time the mood had shifted. Shorn of the controversial dance element, the performance at the Casino de Paris found regular concertgoers listening in respectful silence. Afterward, Stravinsky was hoisted onto the audience’s shoulders and carried out of the hall in triumph. Paul Lalo (no fan of modernism) described the music as “bursting forth with an abundance, a richness, a force of impulse and movement by which one is rapidly seduced, transported, and conquered.”

When Stokowski conducted the American premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1922, there were still some critics prepared to denounce it as primitive noise, but by the time he recorded it for Victor in 1930, The Rite was acquiring the status of a modern masterpiece. Set against the starkly atonal music coming out of composers like Schoenberg and Webern, Stravinsky’s score was starting to feel lush and approachable. Even a jazz musician like Charlie Parker might be caught in concert riffing on some of its themes.

Perhaps the ultimate seal of approval came in 1940 when Stravinsky was chosen as the only living composer to be featured in the animated film Fantasia . Picking up on the work’s “primitive” connotations, an extended sequence depicts the history of the Earth, from the Big Bang to the extinction of the dinosaurs. With Walt Disney’s seal of approval, The Rite of Spring entered the mainstream. 

MAHLER’S FIF TH

From misunderstood masterpiece to the people’s symphony

Gustav Mahler was one of music’s great iconoclasts—a free radical whose rule-breaking, boundaryexpanding symphonies transported his fans and supporters to higher emotional plains, even as conservative critics were regularly panning his work. He was also something of a prophet in his own time. “I am well aware that as a composer, I will gain no recognition during my lifetime,” he ruefully explained to a journalist and future biographer in 1906. “Only when I have shaken off this earthly dust will I receive my due.”

His first three symphonies all came with detailed programs intended to inform an audience about exactly what was going on in music that—although Mahler insisted the opposite—seemed to depict tangible scenes and events. From

his perspective, such explanations inevitably backfired, with listeners endlessly getting hold of the wrong end of the stick. Even as he was speaking of just such a program for his Fourth Symphony, he threw up his hands in exasperation and withdrew all his previous words on the subject. If audiences wanted to know what was going on in the music, he declared, they would simply have to listen— over and over again, if necessary.

By the time he came to write his Fifth Symphony, Mahler hoped that reviewers, by now familiar with his work, would finally manage to get their heads around what he considered to be a conventional symphonic work (albeit one in five movements). He couldn’t have been more wrong.

It didn’t help that his external inspirations—some declared, some undeclared—seemed to suggest the influence of external forces. Fanfares, echoing the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth and the ensuing funeral march, reflected the titanic struggles of his earlier symphonies, but who was this fallen hero so powerfully commemorated in the music? The Adagietto was a love letter to his wife, or so Mahler’s friend and champion Dutch conductor Willem Mengelberg told the world, and the madcap finale quoted a song about a singing contest between a cuckoo and a nightingale. Surely there was a hidden story here?

The 1904 premiere at a new music festival in Cologne was an abject failure. German critics were perplexed by the work’s unpredictability, its oddities, and its lack of musical logic—in other words, the usual charges leveled after the premiere of a Mahler symphony. And despite audiences adoring the Adagietto from the outset, Mahler’s more serious admirers— Richard Strauss among them—felt that he had made too great an artistic concession to popular taste. It seems that Mahler couldn’t win. “Oh, if only I could give my symphonies their first performances 50 years after my death!” he said, recognizing once again that his time was yet to come.

96 svpn- mag.c om
Gustav Mahler’s wife, Alma, to whom he dedicated his Fifth Symphony, and their children (circa 1906)

His predictions were spot on. The critical establishment’s condemnation ensured that performances of the Fifth Symphony following Mahler’s death in 1911 were sporadic, and it was half a century before it began to be rehabilitated. Mahler’s friend and colleague Bruno Walter cut the first recording with the New York Philharmonic in 1947 (though he had previously recorded the Adagietto live in concert with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1938).

An increasing number of performances and recordings in the 1950s and 1960s saw the work gradually take its place alongside Mahler’s more popular First and Fourth Symphonies, and Leonard Bernstein certainly helped things along when he conducted a radiant performance of the slow movement of the Fifth at Robert Kennedy’s funeral in 1968.

But it was Luchino Visconti’s iconic use of the Adagietto in his 1971 film Death in Venice that catapulted the symphony into the charts and earned it an unassailable place in the repertoire. Neither Mahler nor his Fifth Symphony may have had anything to do with Venice, but the aching music clearly struck a chord.

These days, it’s very much a people’s symphony. With its diversity, it offers something for everyone, while the challenge of its thematic complexity is taken up eagerly by the greatest conductors. It’s surely no coincidence that the work Cate Blanchett’s tyrannical conductor obsesses over in Todd Field’s Oscar-nominated movie Tár is none other than Mahler’s Fifth. 

The symphony will be performed for the Sun Valley Music Festival’s season finale on August 24.

Clive Paget is an arts writer and critic. A former editor of Limelight in Australia, he also writes for Musical America and Opera News , BBC Music Magazine , and Gramophone

“Our goal with Sunbeam and White Otter has always been to connect people to the land and each other in a way that is authentic and different than other places.”

STANLEY

—Doug Fenn

Sunbeam owners, Doug and Nancy Fenn, have been at the helm of resurrecting this gem in the Land of the Yankee Fork after years of disrepair and subsequent foreclosure. The couple came into ownership of the structures—the land is a Special Use Permit from the U.S. Forest Service—under bittersweet circumstances. In 1993, they began working for Randy Hess, Stanley’s rafting community pioneer and then owner of White Otter Rafting. After a year, the couple began managing the business while also running day trips on the Upper Main Salmon. In the off-season, they both taught high school in the Wood River Valley.

By 1999, though, they’d finished working for Hess, intent on raising their growing family in Hailey. Everything changed when, in 2008, Hess unexpectedly passed away, and his family called the Fenn asking them to consider running the business that summer to avoid losing what was already on the books.

“We’d just had our third child, that year the economy crashed, Sunbeam had been foreclosed on and was in disrepair, but here was this opportunity to raise our kids on the river, and so we jumped at it,” Doug explains.

They got through that summer camping out and operating White Otter out of the Sunbeam parking lot. Nancy and Doug began to consider if they could make White Otter work permanently, including salvaging Sunbeam. The bank initially laughed at Doug’s offer of the Sunbeam foreclosure. But after seeing the site’s condition, they decided it would be easier to hand him all the work. They cut their losses, and the Fenn purchased 11 condemned buildings for a song during the worst housing crisis ever.

In the end, it would take a village to resurrect one. “Overnight, we had this community of people reaching out who were vested in making this place better,” says Doug. “Friends came up to camp, kayak, and work. We had Pete

Prekeges grilling Grumpy’s burgers out on the deck for a while. We’d get off the river, don work belts, and start picking away at the next project. It was incredible.”

Nancy and her sister Liza, together with their mother, Starr—who have 30 years of restaurant experience between them—brought the cozy café back to life. Doug says guests are pleasantly surprised to find all organic, locally sourced, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients passionately prepared fresh daily. You can taste their passion for colorful, flavorful food in every bite. It’s a simple menu for a simply unique place, and there’s no better way to start or finish a day on the river.

White Otter is the only company located right at the put-in. “We walk down to the river and start rafting—it’s so personal,” says Doug. “I’ll bet 50% of our clients come

back every year. They build relationships with the guides, who themselves come back year after year for the grounding of this place, the play, and laughter,” says Doug. “It fills them up, and in turn, that’s what our guests feel. Sunbeam is magic that way.”

Recently, White Otter had the opportunity to buy an available Main Salmon permit allowing for multi-day trips in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. “We jumped at it because we want to focus on building intentional trips down the river, with groups of people who don’t necessarily have the means or access,” says Doug. “Our goal with Sunbeam and White Otter has always been to connect people to the land and each other in a way that is authentic and different than other places.” Doug trains his guides not only in river education but also teaches them about the area’s history. “I want our guides to be connected to this place, making it a richer experience for everyone who comes here,” he adds.

Summers here are short, and the living is slow and outside. The work and play continue. “The greatest gift of all was being able to raise our kids here,” says Doug. “We don’t have cell service. The internet gets turned off at 5pm every night. We sit outside and watch the sun go down. I’m surrounded by really happy people and a strong community that looks after each other. That’s the stuff I’ve been moved by. It’s not the water; it’s not that the river is any more incredible than any other in Idaho. We were in the right place at the right time and made a decision we will never regret.” It feels a little like discovering gold. 

HONORING VETER ANS

David Ketchum American Legion Post 115

Established in 1934, the David Ketchum American Legion Post 115 has been a steadfast support for veterans and families in the Wood River Valley. With a rich history and diverse membership (and actively seeking new members), including veterans from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the war on terror, the Legion fosters camaraderie and unity.

The Legion Hall in Ketchum buzzes with activity, having undergone significant improvements to the dining and bar areas, making it a premier venue in the region. Monthly dinners, football game gatherings, and special events like the Veterans Day dinner catered by the Pioneer Saloon bring members together.

Beyond their community, the Legion engages in activities like the Memorial Day Service at the Ketchum Cemetery and participation in the Wagon Days Parade. Charitable endeavors support local institutions, such as American Legion baseball, Colla Voce, Girl Scouts, Boys State, and Girls State in Idaho.

Founded by a group of officers in 1919, the Legion holds a national charter and has grown to two million members worldwide. The David Ketchum American Legion Post 115 welcomes veterans from all backgrounds, enriching lives through community engagement.

With a legacy of service and sacrifice, the Legion honors veterans and their contributions to our nation. Its annual fundraiser on September 29 is to be held at the Legion Hall. 

QUIGLEY FARM: A SENSE OF PLACE

A community with a focus

In iconic and scenic Quigley Canyon, Quigley Farm has taken root as a neighborhood development committed to building a unique community blending for-profit and nonprofit institutions to produce sustainable economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Developer Dave Hennessy, Sage School Head Harry Weekes, and Summit Creek Capital Managing Partner Duncan Morton formed a venture to develop the project as a different way to create a community focused on the guiding principles of agriculture, education, and wellness. And progress in this self-sustaining community is beginning to bloom.

The 1,500-acre ranch development adjacent to the city of Hailey—230 acres of which have been annexed into city limits—went through an extensive planning process incorporating community and stakeholder input. The resulting master plan is a work in progress as a model of transformative change. Every design decision for Quigley Farm has been rooted in this location’s ecology, culture, and history to provide a unique

156 svpn- mag.c om
PROPERTY NEWS svpn-mag.com 157

place-based outcome. This distinct model incorporates cluster housing, pocket neighborhoods, farm lots with dedicated agriculture space, and live/work units. Orchards, a living forest, greenhouses, and community gardens are also projected for the neighborhood space. For popular recreational use, there will be playing fields, a pump track, flow trails, and a connection to the BLM trail system and Nordic trails.

Says Hennessy, “We believe we created a good balance between what was needed for the development to function, what worked well within the community structure, and what people wanted. Our goal has been creating a community where the nonprofit and commercial collaboration creates the ability for each entity to build on one another and benefit from working together.”

The developers put the remaining 1,275 acres into a conservation easement designed to preserve the look and feel of the space in perpetuity. “Between the Blaine

County Nordic Center winter trails and the series of summer trails that loop the canyon, we are working on a trail system in conjunction with BLM that, when completed, will include over 45 miles of trails built out surrounding Quigley,” explains Hennessy.

Nearly 300 acres of agricultural land run down the center of Quigley Farm, with the idea of residential clusters tucked among trees and farm lots that run seamlessly into open fields. Large parcels of land are dedicated to agriculture and food production, preserving an element of the property’s cultivated feel. Currently, Quigley Farm is working with several farmers and maintaining a dry crop down the center, but plans this fall are to implement a water management system called Silvopasture, the practice of integrating trees, forage, and the grazing of animals in a mutually beneficial way.

Through a connection made by Harry Weekes, Quigley is working with The WUR University of the Netherlands, one of the world’s foremost agricultural and educational

158 svpn- mag.c om

universities, to establish a regenerative agricultural program. WUR completed a graduate study plan for Quigley providing an overall concept for implementing a food campus, identifying what could and should be grown and on what schedule.

The backbone of Quigley Farm is the Quigley Foundation, overseeing partnerships and enterprises within the neighborhood, supporting the core components of food, education, wellness, and recreation. The Foundation is funded and supported by proceeds of the real estate development as it moves forward, enabling the organization to carry out the mission for the involved stakeholders and the overall community.

The ecologically-centered Sage School campus, completed last year, is also within the Quigley Farm neighborhood. The school prides itself on creating a thriving environment for students to engage in experiences designed to promote self-awareness, community responsibility, and a sense of place.

“Quigley Farm is on its way to being a vibrant, wellness-infused community with core values and exceptional recreation opportunities out your front door.”

The Sage School’s curriculum perfectly aligns itself with the place-based concept of Quigley Farm, reflecting the core elements of the Foundation.

All of Quigley Farm Phase 1 lots have been sold, and Phase 2 launched in July, according to Stuart Hoag, Associate Broker at Sun Valley Real Estate. Says Hoag, “Quigley Farm is on its way to being a vibrant, wellness-infused community with core values and exceptional recreation opportunities out your front door.” 

THE PURPOSE OF PAIN

Dr. Molly Brown offers insight and awareness

Pain serves a purpose in that it is a wake-up call to pay attention to whatever is causing it. At my clinic, we use very specific methods to understand the why behind pain and live a fully confident and pain-free life. We are built to move and have a life of high physical activity, with muscle mass being the longevity organ of the body.

Pain can stop us in our tracks. It can put the nervous system in a highly stressed state. One of the biggest reasons for depression and anxiety in active people or athletes is due to chronic injury or pain after a serious injury. This can be quickly resolved.

The number-one cause of death in people over 65 is death by falling. Once hospitalized, muscle mass and strength are lost, and the risk of falling again triples. In particular, once injured, our proprioception, or the body’s ability to position itself in space, decreases significantly, leading to an increased risk of falling and injury. This is particularly common after concussions. This can be immediately restored once an injured or “turned off” muscle is reactivated with restored function. Once reactivated, muscles become functional, with a new level of stability and recovery.

Most pain is neuromuscular pain caused by muscle inhibition. This means that once a muscle is overloaded due to impact or injury or overstressed due to poor nutrition, toxicity, repetitive motion, or inadequate lymphatic flow, the muscle can “shut down,” as does an overloaded circuit breaker, and it loses connection to the brain. The muscle simply stops engaging. We call this an “inhibited” muscle. This is a problem because the muscles hold the joints in place, stabilize the structure, position the body in space, and increase strength and flow in the body. Once this inhibition

occurs, pain is felt at the end of the muscle, the origin or insertion. Correcting the muscle through specific techniques permanently clears both acute and chronic pain.

The most incredible technique I have found to relieve pain permanently, along with predicting and preventing future injury, is the A.M.I.T. (Advanced Muscle Integration Technique) method. This method combines 17 different modalities in one technique. We see miracles happen daily with this work. It is “one of the most effective treatments for reversing permanent injuries,” as stated by Tim Ferriss in The 4-Hour Body. And NBA Hall of Fame legend John Stockton says that the A.M.I.T. method produces “amazing results” without needing drugs or surgery.

According to A.M.I.T. founder Dr. Craig Buhler, “In our 42 years’ experience treating top athletes worldwide, 80 percent of the cases of plantar fasciitis have been easily corrected.”

I, too, have seen that in my clinic, along with knee, neck, lower back, and more, saving an incredible amount of time, money, and quality of life.

Dr. Buhler brilliantly explains the degeneration process: “Once a muscle is inhibited, it can no longer contract normally. The pain centers fire to protect the tissue, and muscle contraction is limited and painful. The inhibition remains years after the injury has healed. The more the muscle is stressed, the more the pain increases. This means the injured person begins to walk and run differently to protect the foot. This will eventually lead to knee, hip, and low back pain or injury.”

This method is my go-to method for pain, injury, post-surgery healing, and more. The muscles are the display units of the body, and in this way, the area of pain can lead us to quickly pinpoint which muscle needs to be corrected and prioritize the most efficient plan of action with the method. A muscle correction takes about ten minutes.

Pain is the body sending signals to us that there is an issue in that area. It should not be stopped with pain medications or cortisol injections, as this does not solve the root cause of the problem. It simply masks it. Pain can often be resolved rapidly and efficiently by correcting the inhibited muscle, oxygenating and energizing the tissues and cells, and mineralizing the tissues. 

ST. LUKE’S WOOD RIVER FOUNDATION FUNDS CARDIOLOGY EQUIPMENT UPGRADE

To provide the most optimal patient care and accurate outcomes, it is imperative to offer the patient and providers with equipment that is capable of finding irregularities within the cardiac system. Through community generosity, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation (SLWRF) recently provided over $100,000 to purchase state-of-the-art electrocardiogram units for the Wood River Valley.

“SLWR Foundation is grateful for the generosity of the community that enables us to purchase this state-of-theart equipment that will help improve patient experience and, ultimately, outcomes. As a critical access hospital, it is important to be able to diagnose and treat our patients close

to home whenever possible, and this equipment will make a significant impact for many who live or visit our valley,” comments Megan Tanous, Chief Development Officer, SLWR Foundation.

Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to image a large number of structural and functional characteristics of the heart. It is a critical tool in the diagnosis and management of a large variety of cardiac issues, including heart valvular function, heart failure, many cardiomyopathies (abnormal heart structure and function), heart attack, coronary artery disease and angina, certain severe infections, effects of chemotherapy on heart function, abnormal

heart rhythms, certain types of stroke, congenital heart conditions, and more.

“We utilize it every day in the clinic, the emergency department, and for hospitalized individuals. The new machine will provide significantly better and more detailed images, which will improve diagnosis and management information. In addition, it can obtain newer sophisticated information and imaging not available on the current machine, which will also improve diagnostic and management decisions and facilitate care here in our community,” explains David D. Laxson, M.D., F.A.C.C., FAHA, St. Luke’s Wood River Clinic–Cardiology.

An electrocardiography, also known as an ECG or EKG, measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat. The electrical impulse or wave that travels through the heart causes the heart muscle to squeeze, pumping blood. The EKG measures how long it takes for the electrical wave to pass through the heart and if it is too fast, slow, irregular, or normal. A cardiologist can also determine if parts of the heart are overworked, too large, or damaged. Rhythm disorders occur when the heart doesn’t beat properly and cannot pump blood effectively, which can damage or even shut down the lungs, brain, and all other organs.

“This kind of investment is a critical step and tool in providing the best heart care possible here in the valley,” Laxson adds. 

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LONGEVITY

Extend your life by adding to it

We all want to live a long, healthy, and happy life. The good news is that it’s largely within our control. In the past, we didn’t have the information or the means, so it was usually luck and genetics. Nowadays, we make our own luck.

As opposed to lifespan, “healthspan” is defined as the duration of a healthy life. And living healthy means feeling better today, both emotionally and physically. We will discuss eight proven ways to extend your healthspan and the quality of your life:

1. Exercise and movement

2. Regular checkups and preventative health measures

3. A diet of whole foods with minimal processed or sweetened foods

4. Adequate hydration

5. Optimal sleep

6. Minimizing unhealthy habits like smoking and alcohol

7. Intermittent fasting

8. Supplements, superfoods, vitamins, and NAD

This article discusses one through four, with a second installment to come in the fall.

166 svpn- mag.c om

1. EXERCISE AND MOVEMENT

Exercise is fun. We all love outdoor activities. Our valley is a phenomenal amusement park, courtesy of Mother Nature. Most of us find ourselves in Idaho’s mountains because we are passionate about recreation.

The Mayo Clinic recommends a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat, or 75 minutes of higher-intensity exercise, plus at least two days of strength training. The health benefits of resistance conditioning are huge and often neglected. You don’t have to pump iron at the gym. You can do push-ups, bodyweight squats, planks, etc., in your backyard.

No matter what you prefer to do, just get moving! Skiing, biking, running, and hiking are all going to make you feel better and live longer!

2. REGULAR CHECK-UPS AND PREVENTATIVE HEALTH MEASURES

Regular appointments with your physician can have a huge impact on your healthspan. U.S. cancer death rates have fallen by a third in the past 30 years. This is partly because of improved treatments but mostly due to screening and early detection. Finding cancer during its infancy makes it far easier to treat and beat.

Besides cancer screening, your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar should be checked regularly. Immunizations play a significant role in avoiding preventable diseases. Telling your doctor about new symptoms, such as unusual pain or unexpected weight changes, can help discover diseases early. It is your physician’s job to screen for illnesses. It’s your job to make the appointment.

3. POP QUIZ: WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN LIVING A HEALTHY, LONG LIFE?

A) Exercise

B) Limiting alcohol and tobacco

C) Income

D) Diet

E) Sleep quality

The answer is D, and it’s arguably the easiest thing on the list to accomplish. With the exception of B, the other options take time. But it doesn’t take any more time to eat healthy.

The most important foods to avoid are highly processed ones, because artificial ingredients and preservatives cause inflammation in the body. Our bodies interpret these strange chemicals as foreign, and we mount an immune response, creating inflammation that causes many, many disease processes. Processed sugar also creates inflammation by spiking our blood glucose. In the USA, almost 70% of our caloric intake is from highly processed foods. This is a problem of epidemic proportions, far worse than tobacco, illegal drug, and alcohol abuse.

Eating healthy is relatively simple. Avoid processed sugar and any foods that you couldn’t make in your kitchen. Eat whole foods, with the majority of your calories coming from a variety of plants. With natural foods, you can eat all you want.

4. ADEQUATE HYDRATION

Adequate hydration is one of the most important factors in longevity. Researchers at the NIH found that adults with higher levels of sodium, which increases as hydration decreases, showed advanced biological aging and a greater chance of dying prematurely. Adults who stay well-hydrated are healthier and live longer compared to those who do not get sufficient fluids.

There are two ways to hydrate: drinking and via the intravenous route. IV fluids hydrate you faster and better than drinking water. Over 60% of people who come through hospital emergency rooms are treated with an IV. So drink lots of water and come to EXTEN for a super boost of IV hydration!

EXTEN (formerly known as Elevated Hydration) was founded by a physician and nurse from the Wood River Medical Center Emergency Department based on the belief that you don’t have to be sick to get better. It is an Idaho-based business dedicated to helping individuals achieve optimal health and well-being using IV hydration and vitamin therapy. EXTEN offers a comprehensive menu of vitamin drips, like the original Myers Cocktail, our Super Immunity, and the unbelievable energy-boosting NAD+ infusions. EXTEN serves the Ketchum and Boise areas. EXTEN is dedicated to helping Idahoans live their best lives. 

Blair Brown has amassed her life’s work to create a wellness sanctuary in the heart of Ketchum. In designing The Well, Brown wanted to provide an environment for the ultimate in wellness choices and lifestyle needs as a premier center and space. As intended, The Well offers personalized therapies and treatments along with medical biometric evaluations, nutritional guidance, health coaching, and a bevy of cutting-edge and timehonored wellness remedies all in one location.

“We have a comprehensive offering that speaks to a diversity of needs,” says Brown. “When recovering from an athletic injury, a disease, or an imbalance in one’s system, we can combine all the treatments to include the entire body, not just one part of the system. It’s why The Well can be realized as an open door for everyone. Additionally, memberships are about accessibility, and there are a diversity of levels.”

At The Well’s Open Room, one can book contrast therapy with infrared saunas and a cold plunge, and there’s also red light, halo salt, and compression therapies to try or lymphatic drainage. Perhaps bellying up to The Well’s Rx Bar is in order where teas, tinctures, tonics, prescription lattes, functional mushrooms, and probiotic coffee can get the day started or give an afternoon a lift.

Supporting preventive and modern healing, which include contrast, ozone, and infusion therapies, The Well presents proven technologies and personalized programs with expert practitioners and comprehensive testing. Adding to The Well’s services, Brown has also teamed up with Cory Szybala, NMD of Sun Valley Natural Medicine, whose medical background as a naturopathic physician is synonymous with Brown’s vision.

“Connecting with Blair at The Well propels the idea of a community focused on wellness,” says Dr. Szybala. “I maintain my practice, and now I can expand my reach through The Well. The concept makes a big difference in how we can care for people. We look at diet, lifestyle, mental health, physical and emotional function—the whole gamut of someone’s well-being. If not, you don’t get the whole picture of someone.”

Providing a full-service wellness menu with a naturopathic doctor, nutritionists, health coaches, aestheticians, and visiting artists, the perspective of wellness takes on new meaning at The Well. It’s a safe

space in a community with like-minded people who have similar interests and who also want to work with you.

“Wellness is part of what we need,” says Dr. Szybala. “Everyone needs support more than ever, and we want to be there for them. Mental and emotional help is needed, and people want a place to go, like The Well, and find healing.”

Brown adds, “Wellness is relative, and many people have different ideas about what wellness is to them. We live in Sun Valley because it is a ‘wellness’ lifestyle that is close to nature. This is why we have space for all at The Well.”

A wide range of services includes Cryotherapy, Emsculpt NEO, full spectrum infrared heat, cold plunge, contrast therapy, and Verté Essentials, which offers an array of artisan apothecary products intended to bring ritual back to everyday practices. Dedicated to enhancing longevity, promoting optimal health, and fostering active lifestyles, The Well’s attention to healthy living exists on every level.

“Melding concierge service with alternative healing and wellness is part of The Well. It utilizes the many connections and networks available in the Sun Valley community, which has a wide reach to experts in the field of wellness,” says Brown. “We anticipate accommodating requests and expect to help many through fulfilling their needs.”

Adding to the all-inclusive experience, you can also take The Well with you. A boutique of retail items, which offers elements of The Well for home and design along with tools and devices for well-being, will be readily available for sale along with supplements and skin care products.

The Well will have its grand opening with a full moon ceremony, a yurt excursion experience ticket event, and a week-long art installment that speaks to the beauty of art and nature throughout the first week of August with a members-only event. ROOTS MUSIC TO SOOTHE THE SOUL

The Wood Brothers and The Infamous Stringdusters play River Run Lodge

Bringing a spectrum of Americana music together , The Sun Valley Museum of Art presents American roots music Grammy Award nominees The Wood Brothers and the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters for a musical experience at River Run Lodge in Ketchum at the foot of Baldy. As a collective, these musicians offer an anthology of American rootsbased music, past and present, through their storytelling lyrics and well-honed musicianship centered around string instruments and much more.

The Wood Brothers on soulful folk

The Wood Brothers have carved out their niche as American roots musicians serving their artistic vision through creative intention, visceral storytelling, and master musicianship. Brothers Oliver and Chris Wood, along with an honorary sibling Jano Rix, offer their unique and authentic vision to the American roots genre with an historical and presentday music intersection playing acoustic and electric and other instruments to fill out their unique niche and inventive sound. Brothers, which received a Grammy Award nomination for One Drop of Truth in the “Best Americana Album” category. For The Wood Brothers’ Sun Valley performance, they will showcase music from their most recent album, Heart is the Hero, which Chris calls their “pandemic record” as it includes many ideas that had been gestating, and that came together to offer a wellhoned artistic vision in vinyl.

“There are many steps along the way to creating a vinyl today, but it’s worth it,” says Chris. “With music and most everything, we have become visually oriented while creating it. It affects the way we create music and experience it. With Heart is the Hero, we made it all analog and transferred to tape without looking at a screen.”

Expecting something fun and exciting from The Wood Brothers’ chosen direction to create Heart is the Hero, Chris says it made them realize how ubiquitous technology is and how it has completely transformed all our lives.

“The creative process, without a screen and computer, can be recorded and transformed in any way you want,” says Chris. “The computer can be crippling because you can do anything. Often, you end up procrastinating with your creative decisions. So, having limitations can be very effective for the creative process. It allows us to retain the humanity of the music without getting too caught up in the details. We could do away with the minuscule details even though no one would ever know that but us.”

The Wood Brothers are a band that makes creative decisions that are not necessarily commercially driven. The trio brings Chris’s jazz influence and Oliver’s blues background together with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix for an authentic experience.

“The Wood Brothers came together with many influences,” says Chris. “It’s not music that is easily categorized. I thought about what would happen if Charles Mingus and Robert Johnson started a band, so here it is, and there’s so much more we can do.”

The Infamous Stringdusters—

opener

Today’s bluegrass music scene is exploding and drawing generations of music lovers together more than ever, especially since The Infamous Stringdusters are embracing bluegrass to preserve it in history while performing with a 21st-century appeal. Nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance for “Magic No. 9” from Things That Fly and winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, A Tribute to Bill Monroe, The Infamous Stringdusters have carved out a special place in music history for their contributions to bluegrass music.

The quintet of Andy Hall on dobro, Andy Falco on guitar, Chris Pandolfi on banjo, Jeremy Garrett on fiddle, and Travis Book on double bass inspires a deeper understanding of the

genre. Under the label American Vibes, The Infamous Stringdusters are releasing a tribute album to safekeeping bluegrass history and bringing it present and into the future. Their thirteenth full-length record, A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs, pays homage to singer and guitarist Lester Flatt and banjo player Earl Scruggs and their influence on American music.

“The idea is to continue to do these tribute albums,” says Chris Pandolfi. “We have been around long enough that The Stringdusters have come to realize that we naturally have become a bridge between what is happening currently and what happened with music. As a band, we’ve always pushed the music forward and use all our varied influences to try and break new ground with bluegrass.”

The storytelling and string instruments that create the draw of bluegrass represents roots music at its core and offer a living history. The result is meaningful songs played and sung with a great deal of soul.

“We use all our varied influences,” says Chris. “The foundation of our sound is rooted in this music. It has an enormous history, culture, and lineage. It’s why many people get into bluegrass. If we can be part of people discovering that and trace it back, we are doing our job. The music allows everyone to have a common place to enjoy, which is uniquely bluegrass.”

The Infamous Stringdusters is the rare group who can team up with contemporary artists on late-night television one night, headline the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, or perform alongside The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh the next. The band has attracted a faithful international audience and bluegrass continues to connect to new listeners and provide dedicated followers with new works. It might even bring The Wood Brothers and The Infamous Stringdusters together at River Run Lodge. 

A dreamy, witty, and unmissable tale of family and fresh starts, Scrapper is a film that believes life’s not so much about chasing rainbows but snatching fistfuls in both hands.

Secret narratives

Flowers are inherently beautiful, but they also serve as symbols with endless meaning. Artist Kathy Moss paints botanicals as her primary subject, interested in the duality between surface and significance. “Florals and botanicals contain a psychology for me and, on a large scale, represent heads, beats, and landscapes,” Moss explains. “I like the way they look in silhouette.”

She explores the mysterious nature of these forms, which float within an ambiguous space, bridging two worlds: conceptual and representative. The viewer may recognize a shadowy rosebud or a daisy but is confounded by the reverberation of these shapes, which echo across the canvas in arrangements that would never exist in nature. “These are secret narratives; they reveal themselves in quiet contemplation,” says Moss.

Moss’s early work as a print and surface designer has significantly influenced her painting. This effect is most apparent in her repetition of forms, which materialize like patterns on the canvas. “I am a formal painter; in those considerations of form, shape, size, scale, surface, situation, drawing approach, composition, colors (or lack thereof) are the well from which I draw. Over the last 21 years, the work has evolved into a personal iconography, a world of glistening, minimalist surfaces, with floating objects employed as signs,” she says. Aside from subject matter, Moss’s monochromatic and earthy palettes make these paintings unmistakably hers.

Moss begins her process by building and stretching the canvas herself and priming it with traditional rabbit skin glue. She is a master of building up her paintings’ rich and luxuriously textured surfaces. Her exhaustive process involves painting in layers, some of which she drenches in turpentine (paint thinner) only to wipe parts away with a bed sheet, then painting over top of the vague traces of what was there before. With each indexical brush stroke, Moss creates a history on canvas. Erasures become

like beautiful ghosts or fading footprints on the beach obscured by the tide. Moss describes how she often wrestles with her paintings, which autonomously reveal themselves toward the end of the process. “You must relinquish rigid expectations of what you think the painting should be and allow it to emerge as what it has always been,” she says. Not unlike a sculptor approaching the stone, freeing the form trapped inside.

Kathy Moss presents a solo exhibition of new work at Gail Severn Gallery through August, featuring large-scale oil paintings and more intimate drawings. 

Artist Studio Tour of the Wood River Valley hails the creator

196 svpn- mag.c om

Many professional artists who make their livings and live full-time in the Wood River Valley choose south-central Idaho because it is a place that inspires creativity. Most artists participating in the Artist Studio Tour of the Wood River Valley are fully engaged in their art as part of their livelihood. As a participant in the Artist Studio Tour, artists and the Valley’s economy are supported while procuring art on-site and in-hand. And, if desired, you can create a relationship with an artist and become a potential collector.

Abstract encaustic artist Jodie Stejer, whose studio is located on Sun Valley Road in Ketchum, is a participant in this year’s tour, and she enjoys the engagement of meeting new people, which she finds inspiring along with living in the Wood River Valley. “In my working studio gallery space, onlookers will come in while I am working or watch me through the window, and I love it,” says Stejer. “People connect to abstract work in many ways. Encaustic is a unique medium, which many don’t know about, even though it is an ancient art form. It’s very organic in nature, and it’s a very durable medium.” Stejer adds, “The studio tour is important for me because people who follow art find me, and I can have several works of art available to appeal to a wide range of visitors.”

Forty established Valley artists will open their studios to the public for this year’s tour, with returning artists and several new artists. In addition, if a participant visits eight studios over the two days, a tour-goer will qualify to enter a drawing with gifts from participating artists as prizes. Studio tour visitors will be given a copy of the map, and they will put their contact info on the map. When they have signatures from eight studios, they will leave the map at the eighth studio they visit. A drawing will be held several days after the tour and 40 prizes will be given away.

“I love being an independent artist,” says participating tour artist Sarah Davies. “For 30 years, I have enjoyed showing my art in galleries and independently. In every way, the Sun Valley community is welcoming and consistently interests the artist. I am very grateful for this. The interest in the arts in the Sun Valley per capita is much greater than in the large city

thrive and offering original items and admired pieces to enjoy for many years. It creates a memory and provides a priceless connection.

“I like the studio tour because I have the ability to meet people, and I can help interested collectors, on a smaller scale, make decisions about art,” says participating tour artist Susan Hall. “Having been in the design business for 50 years and now showing in my in-home studio, I can demonstrate how art may appear in one’s home.” Hall adds, “The studio tour allows people more time to come into an artist’s studio and get to know the work. As artists, the tour allows us to establish relationships for people to return. Many people who participate in the tour are very knowledgeable about art, and for younger people, it’s an opportunity to see things in the process, which is an invaluable experience. It’s been very rewarding.”

Whether you bike, drive, or walk, the amount of art and goods available will include a variety of styles, mediums, and crafts, as well as an array of painting techniques from oil and water to works on paper, mixed media, handmade jewelry, leather bags, photography, glass-blown items, crosscut bamboo sculpture, encaustic hot and cold wax, woodworks, waxed linen weave, and much more. 

This year’s Artist Studio Tour of the Wood River Valley takes place from Friday, August 18, through Saturday, August 19, from 11am to 5pm each day. A map of the physical locations plus profiles of the artists with images and contact information can be found at artiststudiotour.com

32nd Annual Plein Air Exhibition | July 31-August 4

En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color, and movement into their works.

Kneeland Gallery’s exciting annual plein air event allows you to get involved in a variety of fun activities involving 10 of our premier plein air artists. First and foremost, we encourage you to interact with the painters—they do love the attention! Attend a variety of events in addition to the paint-out, including a plein air workshop with Lori McNee, sponsored by Royal Talens North America, a demonstration with Robert

Moore, and the gallery walk, where you will have the opportunity to chat with all the artists. Most of all, become a collector! There is no better way to support these hardworking artists than to add a painting to your collection. While the artwork represents a mix of subject matter and styles, all the paintings offer a true sense of place and a meaningful remembrance of our beautiful surroundings.

The event takes place July 31 through August 4. For a full schedule, please contact the gallery or visit kneelandgallery.com.

“My goal is to create paintings that appear minimal at first glance but are, in fact, complex visual records of time, life, and experiences.”

Kelly Ording’s works explore the fine line between minimalism and representation. Interested in the tonal and textural possibilities of a surface, Ording often begins her compositions by hand-dyeing paper or canvas, creating an element of surprise and playfulness that offsets the mathematical rigor and precision of her use of bold color and line. Central to her work is the interplay of radiating color, unfolding shapes, and patterns.

Ording often uses the word “meditation” to describe the act of line-making, where time for her moves in a poetic manner. The repetition becomes its own way of marking time and thus marking the human experience.

Dynamic in nature, her paintings can be considered a vehicle to explore color theory, where overlapping patterns evolve and release tones. The balance of her compositions allows you to explore the emotive qualities of color.

In addition to her works on paper and canvas, Ording’s public works and murals hang in San Francisco’s Clarion Alley and Unity Plaza, the headquarters of Facebook and Genentech, and other locations throughout the Bay Area and internationally. Her work is featured in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the San Francisco Arts Commission Public and Civic Art, the Alameda County Arts Commission, and JP Morgan Chase.

“My work tells the stories of female figures of strength, focusing on those who work with their hands; keeping alive the artifacts of humanity.”

California-based artist

Carmen McNall’s paintings are punctuated by deep woodcuts creating a balance between textured patterns and stretches of pure pigment. By combining painting with added wood carving techniques, the paintings are not just rich in color but also embody the idea of “handcrafted,” a theme that is central in her work through both process and subject matter as hands play a recurring role. The faceless figures in McNall’s work resemble goddess-like muses as they rest in dynamic yet effortless poses. Each one embodies strength, confidence, and wisdom. The figures are adorned with a novel blend of symbolic patterns and mark-making. They rest within their own elements, surrounded by a complex yet tranquil interior landscape that inhabits both ancient and futuristic realms.

Through this work, McNall explores the body as a vessel, a container that carries us through life, using both literal vessels, such as vases and containers, as well as human forms. She investigates all that is held within us: memories, tension, energy, healing properties, intuition, and how these manifest into movement.

“My work is very planned out because of the nature of wood carving. Every mark is permanent and, therefore, must be intentional. A lot of the process is in the concept and vision for each piece. I spend quite a bit of time sketching the composition, the colors, and the pattern designs. I like to work on a body of work simultaneously, having multiple paintings in progress at once. This way, I can step back and see the work altogether the way I feel it’s meant to be viewed.

Once I finish painting, I carve into the pieces using woodcut gouges, creating texture within the patterns. This is a very raw part of the process. No mark you make can be undone, so it’s about accepting each mark and the handmade quality it creates. This is what I love so much about the woodcut process. It’s very honest and reveals each moment in time that went into the making of the piece, learning to work with the wood and letting the grain of the wood determine the mark making.”

Russell Chatham Remembered

The Broschofsky Galleries August exhibit is dedicated to the art of Russell Chatham, who died on November 10, 2019. Along with his artistic mastery, Chatham was a world-renowned writer, fisherman, and chef/restauranteur. The showing is a presentation of paintings and lithographs spanning several decades.

Chatham has been aptly described as a voluptuous pilgrim who reveled in his senses. He liked privacy and companionship, stillness and camaraderie. His knowledge of and feelings about all things being connected are best “felt” in his own words:

“Fishing is much the same as painting and writing, both of which I think of as being fun. Fishing and hunting, painting and writing are all a mixture of childlike enthusiasm—fun, if you will—and sharply focused energy. The successful combination of excited wonderland fierce effort produces a new sensation: satisfaction, perhaps the greatest thrill and most important goal in all our lives.”

OCHI

Caitlin Lonegan

Polychromic

Through August 19

OCHI is pleased to present Polychromic, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Caitlin Lonegan. This body of work, consisting of five paintings, continues Caitlin Lonegan’s use of the full spectrum of hues, a range of application techniques, and her interest in spatial illusion that can come from patterned mark-making. To begin each painting, Lonegan maps out fields of shape and color. With each successive mark of oil paint, she transcribes what she sees—the shifting light in her studio, a glint of color on the surface of a glass, an odd city line—onto the canvas. Responding to the visuals around her and to the gessoed surface of the canvas, Lonegan builds slow textures that refract both the world and her direct experience of it. Polychromic includes works that maintain Lonegan’s compositional tendency to leave a central gesso-white abyss and works that abandon this device in favor of entirely paintcovered surfaces. Lonegan’s approach to creating illusionistic

space draws upon muscle memory accrued from recreating Impressionist and Renaissance artworks—a time-honored exercise for young artists learning how to paint. Her paintings source their palette from artists such as Fra Angelico and Claude Monet, moments of pattern from the textile imprints of Francis Bacon, and space from Cezanne and Constable.

Lonegan’s paintings, made slowly, also reward slow looking. If one is patient, one will encounter numerous portals where colorful worlds seem to emerge and dissipate. Each work suggests a perspective at the edge of subjective experience, optical perception, and empirical fact—a consciousness both skittering and contemplative, caught up in brushstrokes and paint sheen. The viewer navigates these paintings through discreet passages that direct both inward towards the illusion of space and feeling and outward towards the world.

Tom Hammick

Painter and printmaker Tom Hammick presents his first solo exhibition at Gail Severn Gallery with recent work. All prints are individually hand-made by the artist in small editions through traditional relief or intaglio processes. His exceptional skill in the medium is evident in the multitude of bold colors he incorporates and the magnificent scale of certain works. Hammick’s painting practice is symbiotically linked to that of his printing, relying on the dynamic tension between positive and negative space. He approaches his paintings with confidence

and puts intention behind each mark, carving into the canvas like he would a woodblock. Hammick richly illustrates visionary scenes, often with ambiguous narratives, including mysterious figures. These emotive panoramas range from dreamy, romantic, and heroic to lonely, contemplative, and nostalgic, with a strong sense of longing. Hammick invites the viewer on what feels like a fantastic journey home.

Kathy Moss

Creating her own gesso and paint bodies from Renaissance recipes,

Kathy Moss depicts botanicals as mysterious archetypes in her work. Keenly aware of the suggestiveness and psychological meaning attached to flowers, they address issues of power, solipsism, and hierarchies. Traditionally working in a monochromatic neutral palette, Moss decisively introduces subtle hints of color in this new series of work. This solo exhibition will feature large-scale oil paintings and smaller works on paper.

Jun Kaneko

This major exhibition features glazed and Raku-fired ceramics and large-scale paintings by internationally renowned artist Jun Kaneko. His initial start as a painter is evident in his sculpture, where monolithic ceramic “dangos” (the Japanese word for dumpling) become three-dimensional, inflated canvases. His graphic, yet painterly, lines and dots are analogous with the Japanese Shinto concept of the “Ma,” which loosely translates into “attachment through space.” Through intentional repetition of brushstrokes and motifs, Kaneko creates a kind of abstract imagery that is recognizable and uniquely his. This exhibition will also present never-beforeseen, small-scale sculptures from the artist’s private collection. Kaneko’s work can be found in more than 100 museum collections and institutions worldwide.

Hemmings Gallery

Hemmings Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Sally King Benedict, the first in her new hometown of Ketchum. For the past 15 years, Benedict has built an impressive following with major shows in Atlanta, Charleston, and New York. Known for her figurative and abstract work, she has been featured in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Domino, and Southern Living. Benedict’s exuberant style is unmistakable and showcases her expert use of color and dynamic brushwork.

Benedict and her family moved to Ketchum from Atlanta in 2021. She’s thrilled to present her first body of work inspired by life in the Wood River Valley.

“I have come to realize that the ways I now recreate have also, in fact, re-created me. This body of work reflects my transition as an artist to a new home over the last two years with imagery inspired by a totally new landscape…one which exists simultaneously between humans and Mother Nature. I have experienced a new viewpoint amongst this community, all while bringing a new baby into the world. I am in a constant state of exhale and disbelief that we get to live here. These paintings reflect my respect for the community here and the way people surrender to the earth and its abundance.”

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this summer include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams and garlic, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh Alaskan halibut, seared ahi salad, spicy sesame noodle bowl and fresh Willapa Bay steamer clams, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and

mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital).

Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
