Most individuals experience some level of cognitive decline as they age. Who hasn’t walked into a room and then promptly forgot what you came into the room for? Or in midconversation, your story comes to a screeching halt as you search for a name or a word that is “just at the tip of your tongue.”
But true dementia—a clinical diagnosis and the sixth leading cause of death in our country—is far more frightening. To live an entire life of joys and triumphs, sorrows and setbacks, and then to forget all of that and then to slowly but surely have one’s identity and personality slip away seems to be an extraordinarily painful end of life.
Can we avoid or at least delay something that may be inevitable?
The medical establishment thinks yes, or, at least, maybe. With some basic healthy habits, we can potentially stave off some levels of cognitive decline. Some key steps to include:
• Regular exercise is healthy for your body and helps blood flow to your brain.
• Good sleep supports all systems, including memory and focus.
• Limiting alcohol improves brain health.
• Quitting smoking lowers dementia risk.
• Mental activities like reading, puzzles, and games help keep your brain active.
• Staying connected socially with friends and family is positive in every way.
In 2015, Dr. Martha Clare Morris and colleagues at Rush University Medical Center and the Harvard Chan School of Public Health published findings from their research following a group of older adults recruited from more than 40 retirement communities and senior public housing units in the Chicago area for up to 10 years. Dietary assessments were filled out every year for nine years by 1,000 participants who then also underwent cognitive testing. The researchers developed a MIND diet score which identified foods and nutrients protecting against dementia and cognitive decline. Fifteen dietary components were classified as either “brain healthy” or unhealthy. Those individuals with the highest MIND diet scores had a significantly slower rate of cognitive decline compared with the participants who had low MIND diet scores. The MIND diet had more effect on cognition than either the Mediterranean or DASH diet alone.

But what about feeding our bodies and our brains? Can we eat our way to brain health? Again, the medical establishment says perhaps.
The MIND diet is not new, but it is continually being studied as a potential means to improve brain health and reduce the risk of dementia. MIND is an acronym for Mediterranean/Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay.
The MIND diet combines two existing eating plans:
DASH, which is a dietary approach to reduce hypertension, and the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and legumes. Both diets focus on brainpower boosting foodgroups and protection from agerelated problems like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Both eating plans also focus on plant-based foods that are minimally processed and limit any foods that
are high in saturated fats and foods with added sugars. Neither diet focuses on weight loss, but both recommend portion control.
By combining these two nutrition plans—DASH, focusing on lowering blood pressure and cholesterol and Mediterranean, targeting cardiovascular disease and boosting brain health—the hope is that the risk of dementia is reduced.
Research suggests that following the MIND diet may reduce oxidative inflammation and stress, which could, in turn, slow any inevitable decline in brain function. Theoretically, by eating foods that are rich in antioxidants, one can reduce oxidative stress, which is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and antioxidant defenses. Prolonged exposure causes cell damage—particularly to the
Julisa and Cristina Vega have been baking bread, cookies and birthday cakes for family and friends for as long as they can remember! Eventually this became a small business as word spread about their baking talent but because they were still operating out of their home kitchen, the demand became too much, and they outgrew their space. Luckily, friends thought of them when they relocated their business to Ketchum, and the sisters opened Golden Tier Sweets in Bellevue.
This charming bakery is definitely a family operation—support and help has gone well beyond just sisters baking together; from installing floors, painting walls, decorating the space and actually running the business, every member of the family is contributing to Golden Tier Sweets.
The aromas and selections filling the bakery are both mouthwatering and comforting—the display cases are filled with beautiful tarts, chocolate covered strawberries, all kinds of pastries, cookies and cakes. The Vega sisters feature a signature Tres Leches Cake—incredibly moist, with real fruit filling, and a homemade whipped cream frosting. Cheesecake, flan, cinnamon rolls and gelatinas of all kinds are on the menu as well, and the sisters can bake a custom cake to fit any theme or design you may have in mind.
Golden Tier Sweets can also create and fill an entire dessert table for your next party or event with brownies, cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, fruit tarts, and just about any other sweet treat you can imagine.
Everything at Golden Tier Sweets is made with love and care. This familyowned business can truly meet all your dessert needs. And you don’t have to order an entire cake; visit the bakery to just get a slice with a coffee to satisfy a craving or to sample a few options for your next party. As the Vega sisters say on the Golden Tier Sweets website: Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just craving something sweet, we’re here to make every bite feel like home.

brain. In addition, inflammation is our body’s natural response to injury and infection, but if it’s not regulated this natural inflammation can be a contributor to chronic disease.
How does this actually work?
Antioxidants stabilize harmful molecules called free radicals, preventing them from causing damage to cells, proteins and DNA. The antioxidants donate electrons to the unstable molecules and neutralize them, reducing oxidative stress, a known bad actor when it comes to the risks of cancer, heart disease, and cognitive decline.

Free radicals are constantly being formed in your body and aren’t always bad; your immune cells use them to fight infections, for example. But your body needs a certain balance; we don’t want the free radicals to outnumber the antioxidants—this leads to “oxidative stress.”

Regardless of one’s genetic predisposition, a healthy lifestyle can lower your dementia risk. So, the MIND diet (along with exercise, social connection, cognitive stimulation and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption) can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and general cognitive decline.

To create the MIND diet, researchers basically took the very best elements from the DASH and the Mediterranean diet.
We know what not to eat, but what exactly should we be eating?
In general, the MIND diet is mostly plant- and fish-based and limits dairy. It’s smart, practical and healthy and it’s not extreme. It’s not a juice cleanse. It’s real food that tastes good.
• three-plus servings per day of whole grains
• one-plus servings per day of vegetables (other than green leafy)
• six-plus servings per week of green leafy vegetables
• five-plus servings per week of nuts
• four-plus meals per week of beans
• two-plus servings per week of berries
• two-plus meals per week of poultry
• one-plus meals per week of fish
• Mainly olive oil if added fat is used
MIND
- Focus on:
(be mindful of saturated/trans-fats)
• Fewer than five servings per week of pastries and sweets
• Fewer than four servings per week of red meat (including beef, pork, lamb, and products made from these meats)
• Fewer than one serving per week of cheese and fried foods
• Less than one tablespoon per day of butter/stick margarine
We’ve all heard that one glass of red wine with dinner can be good for you, but because the effects of alcohol on different individuals are complex, specific recommendations are not possible. Alcohol is omitted from the MIND diet because personal and family health histories vary so widely.
• Breakfast: Oatmeal topped with blueberries and chopped walnuts
• Lunch: Salad with leafy greens, chickpeas, cherry tomatoes and olive oil dressing
• Snack: A handful of almonds or strawberries
• Dinner: Grilled salmon with quinoa and roasted broccoli
• Quick treat: Dark chocolate
Notice that the MIND diet doesn’t specify exact amounts because the focus should be on eating real food— feeding and fueling your body and not starving yourself. This isn’t about weight loss—though that’s often a perk of this diet—it’s about giving your brain and your body what it needs to function best.
So far, observational and shortterm studies exist that do show a correlational and potential causal connection between this style of eating and a lowered risk of cognitive decline.
Parichita Choudhury, MD, a cognitive neurologist with Banner Sun Health Research Institute, emphasizes again that the MIND diet is part of a comprehensive way of living which, again, includes the following:
• Regular exercise increasing blood flow to the brain
• Good sleep supporting memory and focus
• Limiting alcohol to protect long-term brain health
• Quitting smoking to lower dementia risk
• Engaging in mental activities like reading, puzzles and socializing to keep your brain active
“All of these things work together,” Dr. Choudhury said in an article for Banner Health. “The more healthy habits you combine, the more likely you are to protect your brain.”

BY KATE HULL

Whether you’ve slurped a huckleberry milkshake at Smiley Creek Lodge, added a dollop of huckleberry jam to your pancakes at The Kneadery in Ketchum, ducked in a few blocks down the way for the Sawtooth Club’s Bald Mountain Bramble cocktail, or just filled your belly while plucking plump berries on a hike, huckleberries are without a doubt a staple of Idaho summers.
You can’t go into a shop, bakery, or restaurant, it seems, without each spot’s take on the coveted summer natural wonder. Huckleberries are so well-loved, in fact, that the tart treat was named the state fruit of Idaho in 2000, thanks to a group of Bonner County fourth graders who proposed that the Legislature make it official, designating the berries as an official emblem of Idaho.
ON THE HUNT

“Huckleberry picking is such an identifiable part of life in Idaho,” says Shana Witkin Write, an avid berry forager who lives in Coeur d'Alene with her family. “They are such a fun treat! It gives our family a destination to explore when there are so many different opportunities and places to choose from. That is what gets us out— being able to pick something from a wild plant that depends on the natural world is special.”
The Pacific Northwest is home to more than a dozen varieties of naturally occurring huckleberries. Foragers in the Gem State will find the mountain huckleberry, or Vaccinium membranaceum, which is also commonly known as the black huckleberry or thin-leaved huckleberry, among other monikers, on bushes growing at elevations between 2,000 and 11,000 feet and standing 1 to 6 feet tall. Come early summer, try to spot the bell-shaped flowers, signifying that berries are not too far behind. Then, depending on the summer’s heat and moisture, harvests of deep purple and red berries begin anywhere from late July through mid-August. Southfacing slopes at lower elevation are the first to ripen, and some say they are sweeter; however, this is up for debate.

• ½ cup balsamic vinegar
• ¼ cup huckleberries (fresh or frozen)
• 1–2 teaspoons sweetener (honey or sugar if needed for balance) optional
• Pinch of salt and pepper
Reduce Vinegar: Add the balsamic vinegar to a small saucepan over medium heat.
Add Berries: Add the huckleberries and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the berries burst and the mixture reduces to about 2 tablespoons of syrup, taking roughly 5–8 minutes.
Finish: Remove from heat and, if desired, lightly mash the berries for a smoother sauce or strain them out for a glossy finish.
Cool: Let the glaze cool slightly before serving; it will thicken further as it cools.
Best Used For
• Drizzling over vanilla ice cream or cheesecake
• Pairing with grilled pork, chicken, or venison
• Tossing with roasted vegetables (like Brussels sprouts)
Witkin Write’s top tip for hopeful hunters is to pack a picnic and make a day of it. But the berries are the number one nutrition source for bears in the summer, so come with bear spray, make noise, and plan to forage with friends. “It doesn’t have to be a big, long, strenuous hike to get them,” she says. “But always remember you are out in the wilderness.”
Bears, both black and grizzly, are huckleberries’ prime non-human consumers, but elk, deer, and birds also munch on the sweet fruits, and smaller mammals find both food and shelter in the thick bushes.
While every picker no doubt has his or her secret spot, look for berry patches with access to full or partial sunlight, particularly near old burn areas, abandoned logging roads, and open canopies where the bushes thrive on forest floors. The Sawtooth National Forest is home to prime patches in the Ketchum area. Exploring trails near your backyard can always lead to a welcome surprise. You’ll likely smell the sweet aroma before you even spot them!
Foraging and eating off the land are deeply rooted in the history of Indigenous people dating back generations. Huckleberries are designated as a First Food, a term used to delineate a culturally, spiritually, and ecologically significant food in Indigenous America. This designation drives conservation and habitat restoration efforts to ensure ancestral patches are maintained.
The berries were a key part of nutrition and medicinal use in Indigenous cultures, thanks to their antioxidants,

high iron, and vitamin C and potassium. Crops were managed after harvest using a burning ceremony to kill off unwanted weeds and encourage patches to thrive, restoring nutrients to the soil.
“Fires release the nutrients stored in trees and brush,” says Daniel Green, retired wildland firefighter who has been picking huckleberries in his home state for 70 years. “Post-fire nutrients found in the ash are then readily available to plants.”
Green says that for a good crop year, he looks for adequate snow cover to protect the budding from starting prematurely. Climate change continues to alter Mountain West weather patterns. One study published in the scientific journal Elsevier predicted huckleberry bush flowering to shift more than a month earlier. The shift puts a higher risk of unanticipated frosts killing buds before the fruit and drastically changes the availability of the fruit in certain areas, and the ecosystem that relies on them for food.
“Huckleberries need adequate summer thunderstorms to maintain good soil moisture, which determines the berry size, as well as hot enough temperatures to ripen them before the fall frosts,” Green says. “If it’s too hot, however, it will shorten the picking season.”
The finicky weather, unique growing conditions, and long life to maturity (nearly 15 years) all make huckleberry bushes incredibly difficult to grow commercially. The roots are also rhizomatous, meaning they grow horizontally to better seek out and store nutrients to protect themselves from harsh
conditions. While some have been successful at growing huckleberries, it’s a daunting task. Hiking long distances to seek out the tasty treats and spending hours picking one by one is much more fun.
“Huckleberries provide an organic view on what nature can bring,” Witkin Write says. “You can pick something off a plant that grows wild and is dependent on so much. Each season, we consider if there are fires, if we are worried about the snowpack affecting the huckleberries and then affecting the summer harvest—everything is tied together.”
Huckleberries are often compared to blueberries, but their flavor profile is more between a blueberry and a cranberry, with a tart and sweet kick depending on when they are harvested that nicely complements just about any sweet treat, cocktail, and even savory dish.
Adding to the allure and lore of Idaho’s huckleberries is no doubt the effort to pick each berry. These tiny but mighty berries are picked one at a time straight off the plant. Filling a pint takes effort. A gallon? That’s real commitment.
The shining star of huckleberry pairing may be swirled inside a milkshake. From Teton Valley’s famed Emporium to Smiley Creek’s legendary Smiley Creek Lodge, huckleberry milkshakes are a go-to order no matter the season—and yes, even winter. Mountain High Creamery in Ketchum serves up an Idaho Mountain Twist with vanilla and huckleberry soft serve or go straight huckleberry.

HABITAT:
Alpine and sub-alpine coniferous forests
DON'T STOP AT ICE CREAM
“I always love making small-batch jam,” Witkin Write says. “I keep a few gallons of frozen huckleberries in my freezer to use for cobblers, scones, pancakes, and even in cottage cheese. They are versatile and have such a big flavor profile.”

The Kneadery pancakes topped with a huckleberry compote is a must—berries and breakfast go hand in hand. Beyond breakfast, think cocktails with muddled berries or vodka infused with the fruit. The Sawtooth Club’s Idaho Lemonade uses Blue Ice Idaho-made huckleberry vodka, and the Bald Mountain Bramble is topped with fresh berries. For savory fans, huckleberries can be reduced to a thick, sweet reduction that’s perfect for elk or venison or turned into a tangy vinaigrette to top seasonal greens. The Ketchum Grill serves up grilled duck breast topped with a huckleberry port wine reduction. Whether you’re savoring them at a local restaurant, piled high on an ice cream cone, or munching straight from the bush, huckleberries and Idaho go hand in hand—and if you’re doing it right, you’ll probably leave with purple-stained fingers. g

My recipe box is filled with go-to recipes to celebrate the berry harvest from curds and tarts to delicious scones and muffins, but there is nothing quite as versatile (and simple!) as a tried-and-true freezer jam.
If you don’t eat it up right away, it can store in the freezer for a year or when you start to miss the summer goodness. While jam might not sound all that exciting, this recipe shines with what comes next. I add a spoonful of jam to a the bottom of a cocktail glass for a muddled huckleberry gin and soda. It’s the perfect surprise layered alongside buttercream in a fruitforward chocolate cake or top lemon cinnamon rolls with a scoop.
• 2 cups huckleberries
• Juice of one lemon
• 1 cup of sugar (adjust to taste for sweeter or tarter jam)
Rinse and clean two cups of huckleberries, ensuring no stray leaves or uninvited guests made their way home from the berry patch. For a smooth finish, pulse your berries in a blender to desired consistency. Place your berries in a sauce pot with sugar and lemon juice. For a sweeter jam, increase sugar by half a cup. Stir frequently over medium-high heat until the mixture comes to a rolling boil. TIP: Once you add in the ingredients, give it a mix and quick taste to see how tart or sweet your jam is. Adjust as needed. Reduce heat and continue to stir – don’t stop stirring or it could burn and stick! – for about 10 more minutes or until the jam thickens. Remove from heat and let cool. Fill in jars with about half an inch of space at the top if freezing. Spread, scoop, and savor your summer treat!

Summer has blossomed, and with it the valley’s favorite dishes and drinks are back on the menu. There’s no prettier plate than one topped with a bouquet. And while we wouldn’t suggest lunching on lupine or meal-prepping with larkspur, there are plenty of flowers that are just as delicious as they are beautiful.
There are five common edible flowers that we see in our day-to-day dishes: nasturtiums, pansies, squash blossoms, roses and lavender. Each adds its own flare of nuance and flavor, bringing not just decoration but unexpected complexity to a meal.
Pansies offer a soft, grassy flavor along with an appealing pop of color. “They’re one of the most accessible and readily available because they grow like a weed,” explains Courtney Barnard, owner of catering company
and event venue Salted Sprig. Thanks to their vibrant petals and mild flavor, they tend to be decoration-oriented and are easy to grow at home. They look beautiful frozen in an ice cube or scattered across a salad.
That same visual appeal draws bakers to pansies as well. Rebecca Bloom, owner and head baker of the Hailey-based bakery Piedaho, says she incorporates pansies into her pies by pressing them into crusts or using the bright petals to top cream pies in the summer. While baking them into the crust can leave a delicate imprint, placing them on top is where their color truly stands out against the finished dessert.
On the savory side, nasturtiums offer a bright, peppery bite like arugula, adding an added kick to these dishes. However, unlike pansies, they can be more difficult for

Idaho chefs to access due to their growing patterns and price of import. “A lot of the most expensive floral is edible floral, so if chefs are going to incorporate them it’s often for a client request,” Barnard explains. Both the leaves and flowers are edible, and chefs often use them to add a fresh, slightly spicy note to everything from grain bowls to open-faced sandwiches.
Squash blossoms have a light, slightly sweet vegetal taste and are one of the few edible flowers that serve as a central ingredient rather than just a garnish. “They’re really delicate, but they add an airy, almost puffed rice quality to meals,” says Barnard, noting that they can even be used similarly to cabbage leaves as a wrapper for fillings rather than just appearing as a starter.
Leaning sweeter, roses bring a gentle, floral taste as delicate as their petals and often appear in syrups, jams, and desserts. Bloom uses rose petals and other

WRV native, Paula “Cata” Lopez learned from one of the best in the Valley—beginning her culinary career at age 18 under the guidance and teaching of Cristina Cook at “Cristina’s” of Ketchum. Locals are raving about Paula’s new deli “Catalina’s” and appreciating Cristina’s influence on this busy working mother who wants to support locals in their day to day lives. She provides families with ready to serve, healthy meals that everyone in the family will enjoy. She’s serving up a tantalizing fusion of comfort food and sophistication.
Catalina’s deli case offers elevated “grab and go” food, specifically prepared to reheat perfectly. New dishes are rotated based on takeout and catering menus— favorites include the chicken Milanese and the “El Italiano” sandwich featuring prosciutto, salami, mozzarella, arugula, roasted peppers, olive oil, and balsamic. Perry’s restaurant was another favorite of Cata’s growing up and she wants her menu to reflect Perry’s great assortment of sandwiches. But beyond a quick sandwich for a busy workday, Catalina’s offers entrees like lasagna, chicken Marbella, and short ribs. Cata and her team take great care with packaging so everything—including salads—stays fresh.
Catalina’s signature desserts include assorted cookies, lemon bars, chocolate chip cookies, scones, tiramisu, and their special "goo" cookies. Many of these are local favorites from past businesses that Cata has brought back adding her own special twist.
And the name “Catalina’s?”

Idaho wildflowers in her edible flower sprinkles, which have been used to top pastries like her Raspberry Rose Crumble Pie — a Valentine’s Day special.
At Salted Sprig, rose also shows up on the cocktail menu, especially in the summer when it pairs beautifully with fresh ingredients like cucumber and clear spirits.
For Barnard, lavender is one of the most versatile and affordable edible flowers she works with. Best known for its fragrant, floral aroma, it brings that same perfumed note to foods and drinks, from baked goods and honey to cocktails. Barnard uses lavender in homemade salts for flavor and color, plus in syrups and as garnishes in Salted Sprig drinks. “Floral is way easier to incorporate behind the bar because while it adds sort of an effervescence, it doesn’t usually have a predominant flavor profile,” she explains.

This bouquet of edible accoutrements doesn’t just serve for taste and texture; they’re also blossoming with nutritional benefits. Nasturtiums and rose petals are rich in vitamin C, and pansies contain vitamin A compounds. Flowers with bright petals, often deep purples or reds, often hold anthocyanins, which act as antioxidants.

Yield: 6–8 blossoms. Prep Time: 15 min. Cook Time: 10 min.
INGREDIENTS:
• 6–8 fresh squash blossoms
• ½ cup ricotta or soft goat cheese
• 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh herbs (chives, basil, or parsley)
INSTRUCTIONS:
• salt and pepper, to taste
• 1 egg, lightly beaten
• ½ cup all-purpose flour
• ½ cup sparkling water (cold)
• vegetable oil, for frying

Gently open the blossoms and remove the stamens/pistils.In a small bowl, mix ricotta, herbs, salt, and pepper. Spoon the mixture into each blossom, twisting the top gently to close. Make a light batter by whisking together flour, egg, and sparkling water until smooth. Heat ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Dip each stuffed blossom in batter, then fry until golden and crisp (about 2–3 minutes per side). Drain on paper towels and serve warm, plain or with a squeeze of lemon. Serving tip: Great as an appetizer, on salads, or atop a fresh grain bowl.

The perfect day in Ketchum starts with the Valley’s favorite weekend brunch and weekly lunch specials at Humberto’s Bistro, where local flavor meets heart.

Historically, edible flowers have also been used for their medicinal properties, which we can now see in the average self-help package. A calming lavender tea can reduce stress and anxiety and improve sleep quality. Rose petals used in teas offer digestive relief, and elderflower infusions can be used for colds and flus. A meal with these blooms can literally ease stress in the body, so it’s not just the joy of a beautiful bite that makes you sigh in relief.
Edible flowers appear throughout the Sun Valley food scene, with restaurants like Rasberrys and NourishMe using them to add both flavor and visual appeal to dishes. Some blooms come from local growers, including Squash Blossom Farm. Barnard even recalls topping a wedding cake with pansies and marigolds sourced from a home garden.
Bright pansies, peppery nasturtiums, and delicate squash blossoms might look like decoration, but they’re meant to be tasted. “A lot of people dining don’t know that they can eat flowers and remove them from their plate,” Barnard says. But in the kitchen, those petals are the final touch, adding color, flavor, and a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful ingredient on the plate is also the most unexpected. g

Summers in Sun Valley simply can’t be beat. Most days, the temperature hovers around a pleasant 78 degrees, trailheads and swimming holes are minutes away from town, and though town may be busier, it’s still easy to find one’s own private corner of this oasis. Adding to the magic of summer is the al fresco dining. The outdoor dining options vary significantly, from rooftop dining to intimate tree-shaded patios and expansive decks with mountain views. Whatever you choose, flip flops and sunglasses are part of the dress code. While virtually every restaurant in the Valley offers outdoor dining, a few highlights are worth checking out.
When one pictures drinking beer on a deck in Ketchum, Lefty’s is likely the first spot to come to mind. The deck at this longtime favorite pub is packed the minute the snow melts and the sun starts shining. There’s ample seating and the vibe is more like one big party, with patrons flitting from one table to the next, beer in hand, to say hello to friends old and new. In the summer, Lefty’s often hosts local musicians on the deck, adding a pleasant ambiance as you enjoy fare from a traditional pub menu: burgers, fries and onion rings, and sandwiches.
Just down the hill on Warm Springs Road is another Ketchum staple: Grumpy’s, a locals’ hangout. Big burgers

and big beers (schooners) are the fare here. And, of course, lots of fun in the sun in their outdoor seating.
While most al fresco dining spots around Ketchum take advantage of their views of Baldy, there is one al fresco eatery that turns the tables, so to speak, and offers sweeping views of the Valley, and that is the Roundhouse, perched two-thirds of the way up the mountain. Ride the gondola for a charming meal—lunch or dinner—above the Valley.
At the base of the mountain, on the Warm Springs side, is the locals’ favorite: Apples'. Originally known for being the best après spot in town, Apples' in recent years has expanded its outdoor dining, and menu, for year-round dining. Soak in the skiculture décor and lively ambiance at a Ketchum institution.
The rooftop of the Warfield is one of the most coveted spots for dining in the summer. There are great views— both of the surrounding mountains as well as of downtown Ketchum— plenty of shade to keep you from roasting, and the atmosphere is, to put it simply, fun. Seating options abound, from stools at the small rooftop bar and six-seater high-tops where you can mingle with others to two-tops and bigger tables for dining with friends, to Adirondack chairs around the firepit. This is truly the spot for any kind of summer wining and dining.
Just across Main Street from the Warfield is the ever-popular Sawtooth Club. While the Sawtooth has a range of seating venues—bar high-tops to small quiet tables— some of the most prized seating is
on their beautiful second-floor deck. Always festooned with bright summer flowers, the Sawtooth deck is a special place to share a meal on a warm summer evening.

In November 1991, Todd Rippo began what he always described as a selfish endeavor. Essentially, he created a place where he would want to hang out. Java has a hand-crafted bakery menu (most of the recipes are from Todd's sister Annie) and breakfast and lunch menus that echo his Southern California roots. In line with his original vision, Java has always, and continues to, use fresh roasted, fair trade, and relationship coffees and serves it all in an inviting, rock 'n' roll atmosphere where the music is played a bit too loud!

We are a split store with a grocery portion that is stocked with local fruit, vegetables, meats, and cheeses, as well as a variety of supplements. On the other side is a beautiful cafe that utilizes all that locally sourced food to create soups, sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and so much more. Morning light drifts across the streets of Ketchum as an active, wellness-minded community moves effortlessly between mountain trails and moments of pause. Along Leadville Avenue, Sipology! offers a space that mirrors this rhythm— calm, inviting, and quietly refined.
Founded in 2025 by Mike Barthel, Sipology! was imagined as more than a café. It’s a gathering place where coffee, smoothies, boba tea, and açaí bowls are brought together with intention, each crafted from fresh, natural ingredients without artificial additives. Every detail is designed to feel both energizing and satisfying.
At the heart of the experience is a deep appreciation for exceptional coffee. The café’s signature espresso—smooth, balanced, and consistently refined—has become a favorite among locals and visitors, turning a daily ritual into something memorable.
Today, Sipology! stands as a hidden gem within Ketchum—an inviting retreat where quality, simplicity, and community come together, one cup and one bowl at a time.

Vita and Burke Smith started Cookbook in 2018 in an old building off of Warm Springs Road. With a tiny kitchen and a lot of heart, it grew into something even more exciting — now in their new home on East Avenue, the former location of Scout Wine & Cheese.
Their move marks a new chapter — but not a new story. You’ll still find the same thoughtful cooking, familiar faces, and community-driven spirit that’s always defined them. They’ve simply expanded the number of tables and opportunities for fun! Expect more room to gather, new menu additions, and the same welcoming atmosphere that has always made Cookbook feel like home.
EAT. DRINK. PLAY NICE.

The Pioneer Saloon, renowned for perfectly aged, tender and flavorful beef, is typical of an earlier Idaho where ore wagons rattled down Main Street and business was done with a handshake and a drink. Natural woods, mounted game and period firearms help recreate an authentic saloon atmosphere. Originally opened

Dine like a local—head to The Pio! in 1940 as a bar, it went through many changes over the next 20 years before being officially redesigned as a restaurant. It is largely known now for its hearty servings of prime rib and filets. For some, The Pioneer Saloon is the first restaurant to head to when coming into town and the last place to go before leaving. For others, it’s where they met their significant other, perhaps over a Bartender's Margarita. For the Witmer family, it’s their Ketchum legacy. Duffy and Sheila Witmer have been the sole owners of the Pio since 1986. Today, with their children they strive to honor a historical classic while bringing new ideas to Ketchum’s restaurant scene.

Mountain Village is a hot spring resort, nestled between the Salmon River and the majestic Sawtooth Mountains, located in the historic town of Stanley, Idaho. Family-owned since 2014, Mountain Village takes pride in offering year-round, familyfriendly hospitality, fresh and filling meals, scrumptious features, wild game options, signature cocktails, and good times.
We start our day by taking the “overnight corned beef” out of the oven, baking jumbo cinnamon rolls, frying eggs, and griddling stacks of spiced stout beer pancakes.
Lunchtime shifts to big salads, Wagyu beef burgers, Rocky Mountain elk chili, and our famous, housesmoked tri-tip sandwich.
Dinner, however, is where we truly shine. Our chef and his crew transform Idaho food into Idaho cuisine: Certified Angus beef steaks, cider-brined pork chop with roasted apple, assorted fish and wild game. Our herb-crusted Certified Angus beef prime rib with peppercorn sauce is truly amazing – served every Friday & Saturday. Visit the Saloon for specialty cocktails, cold beer, or a glass of wine.
