Bob Dix earned a bachelor’s degree at San Francisco State University and an MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He has exhibited his work widely including the Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco Artspace, the San Francisco Art Institute, the San Jose Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

CRAFT SERIES WORKSHOP: CAPTURING YOUR BEST IPHONE PHOTOS WITH STACIE BREW Tue, Jul 27 & Aug 3, 6–8:30pm Hailey Classroom, Hailey $65 / $75 nonmember Photography is often referred to as painting with light.

Like practitioners of any artistic discipline, photographers should be adept at using all the tools in their artistic toolboxes, always ready to capture light artistically. Local photographer Stacie Brew will walk you through the basics of how to take great photos with your iPhone. Stacie will share her favorite apps for color correction, cropping and other image adjustments and will show you how to share your images on social media. Bring an iPhone with up-to-date current operating system and functioning camera. For students 16 and older, beginners welcome.

50 YEARS OF C ­ REATIVITY, ­COMMUNITY AND ­ CONNECTION 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (now Sun Valley Museum of Art). Since 1971, we’ve served as a cornerstone of our community and provided connection to world-class artists and thinkers, educators and makers. This summer, we celebrate 50 years of classes and workshops, concerts and exhibitions, lectures and conversations.

We are grateful to our many supporters as we celebrate our past 50 years and look ahead to the next 50.

And we are more committed than ever to our mission: enriching our community through transformative arts and educational experiences. We honor the group of artists and educators presented here, each of whom has inspired exploration and participation and helped lay the foundation for the culturally rich community we live in today.

Clay, Silver, Ink was guest-curated by artists Jim Romberg, Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ Director of Ceramics from 1973 to 1986, and Peter de Lory, who began teaching in 1974 and was Director of Photography from 1976 to 1979 and during the summers of 1982 and 1983. The exhibition takes a look back at the Sun Valley Center’s early years, and features artwork made by some of the many artists who taught here in the 1970s and 1980s. When the Sun Valley Center for the Arts launched in 1971, it started as a place for classes and workshops across a range of artistic disciplines, with a focus on ceramics, photography and printmaking. Students from around the world traveled to Sun Valley to take master classes from nationally and internationally known instructors.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on the role the Sun Valley Center played in the lives of dozens of artists and trace the history of the organization itself, from a teaching institution to an accredited museum.

While Sun Valley Museum of Art has transformed through the decades, its values have remained rooted in those of the early Sun Valley Center, with a focus on delivering transformative arts and educational experiences that stimulate the imagination, offering opportunities for ­discovery, and building community.

LECTURE AT THE BEGINNING: A CONVERSATION WITH GLENN JANSS AND JIM BELSON Thu, Jun 24, 5:30 pm Community School Auditorium, Sun Valley FREE, pre-registration required, space is limited Exactly 50 years from the day the Sun Valley Center for the Arts was incorporated, Glenn Janss, the organization’s founder, and Jim Belson, its first Executive Director, will spend the evening in conversation, sharing stories about the people, programs and philosophy that guided the institution during its early years.

A THOUSAND WORDS: GUIDED WRITING ABOUT THE ART YOU SEE WITH SARAH SENTILLES Tue, Jun 15, 6–7:30pm The Museum, Ketchum $10 / $12 nonmember Art inspires, captures, escapes, disrupts, disturbs, conceals and reveals. It also helps us learn to look more carefully, reminding us that what we think we see is not all there is.

In this time of, careful looking is ethical and urgent work.

Join us for generative writing exercises based on the current exhibition. Experiment with new ways to view art and play with language. The workshop is open to all levels.

Sarah Sentilles is a writer, teacher, scholar of religion and author of many books, including Draw Your Weapons, which won the 2018 PEN Award for Creative Nonfiction.

Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Oprah Magazine, Ms., and the Los Angeles Review of Books.

FAMILY PROGRAM AFTERNOON ART (for families with kids ages 5–12) Wed, Jun 16, Jun 30 & Jul 14, 2:30pm & 3:30pm The Museum, Ketchum FREE, pre-registration required, space is limited Families will make art and view the exhibition together.

Projects will change on a weekly basis and always connect to the artwork in the exhibition.

PERFORMING ARTS ADULT CLASSES CRAFT SERIES WORKSHOP: THREE-COLOR REDUCTION PRINTS WITH CHAD SEELIG Sat, May 22, 9am–4pm Hailey Classroom, Hailey $65 / $75 nonmember Students will discover the oldest form of printmaking by creating multiple color woodcut prints using a single woodblock. The class will cover image transfer, block carving, print registering and printing using a printmaking press. For students 18 and older, beginners welcome.

Chad Seelig is a new media technology artist and educator. He teaches at Colorado State University, Front Range Community College, and Metropolitan State University. Chad studied at Pratt Institute with an emphasis in intaglio, lithography and book binding and received his master’s degree at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

CRAFT SERIES WORKSHOP: A CERAMIC TRANSFORMATION VESSEL WITH BOB DIX Thu, Jun 3 & 17, 5:30–8:30pm Hailey Classroom, Hailey $100 / $125 nonmember Ancient cultures have long recognized fire as a transformative force. To this day, fire rituals still have meaning as attempts to rid ourselves of unproductive patterns and obstacles in our lives, opportunities to express gratitude, and acts of healing, celebration or purification. In this class, we will hand-build ceramic containers as part of a transformation ritual, through which we will express our hope for the future.

Participants will spend the first evening building a clay vessel using coil, slab or pinch construction; on the second evening, they will glaze their vessels. For students 21 and older, beginners welcome.

TWISTED PINE Mon, Jun 14 & Tue, Jun 15, 7pm Sun Valley Pavilion Lawn $15 / $25 nonmember Kicking off the summer and SVMoA’s 50th Birthday celebration, join us on the lawn at the Pavilion for a safe and socially distanced homage to our past, present and future! The Museum/Center has been presenting music for 50 years and our first home was on Sun Valley Resort property. Twisted Pine is one of the most acclaimed string bands in the Northeast. Audiences are drawn to their forthright songwriting, lush harmonies, musical ­daring, and charismatic appeal. The Boston Globe calls the string band “boundary jumpers akin to outfits like Punch ­Brothers, Nickel Creek, and Crooked Still.”

GAIL SEVERN GALLERY INSPIRATION REALIZED: SUN VALLEY CENTER CERAMICS ALUMNI EXHIBITION Fri, Apr 30–Wed, Jun 30 400 1st Ave North, Ketchum Organized by Jim Romberg and Gail Severn, this e­ xhibition features work by some of the many students who launched their careers at the Sun Valley ­Center in the 1970s and 1980s.

Some of these artists continue to work in ceramics while others have pursued careers in mediums ­including bronze sculpture, painting, printmaking and public ­installation.
