We recently completed work at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club in Phoenix on a new 19,500-square-foot golf facilities center, including a retail shop, offices, and locker-room building.
Sun Valley attached and grouted all the Special Frank Lloyd Wright designed Biltmore Block in accent bands around the entire building. We also did all the stone at the stairwells and parapets.
This month we're highlighting our Oklahoma Division and a couple of their completed projects. At The University of Oklahoma (right), we performed work on Gallogly Hall. Scope of work included a hand-laid diaper pattern, brick veneer, and precast.
At the Hobby Lobby Corporate Headquarters (below) in the West Point Building, we completed working consisting of GFRC, Limestone, Precast, and natural rock. The interior lobby wall, elevator surrounds, and stairs are all 3” limestone The interior limestone is coated with an enhancer.
If you've worked at Sun Valley for six months or more, you're eligible to apply for our concrete apprenticeship program, the only accredited program in the state of Arizona.
Our Programs include a Full-time instructor & part-time apprentice coordinator with dedicated classroom in the office with all learning materials needed.
The programs are fully accredited by the state of Arizona through the Department of Labor and Fully accredited nationally through NCCER.

Mortar mixers for masonry and stucco have been around for a long time and safety concerns should not be taken lightly. I started out like most have, laboring for a masonry contractor, learning the ins and outs of my job. Mixing mortar was one of those tasks. It is a simple machine to operate fill it up with gas, turn the ignition switch on, pull the choke on pull the cord and it is running.
I was taught some of the obvious hazards like keeping the guard down while the mixer is running, and to be careful cleaning the pour spout with a shovel. A shovel can get caught in the paddles and do not stand in front of the handle while dumping the drum. When you enter the safety world everything changes as you gain experience, you see things with different eyes than you did as a laborer or mason It is not because you did not care about safety, it is because you spend most of your time observing others performing these tasks every day.
I have seen a lot in the last 25 years as the Safety Director, here are some safety tips to protect your employees from possible injury or death while operating a mortar mixer. Make sure they are wearing the required PPE; see the operator’s manual for this information.
Set the mixer up on level ground and before you start the mixer make sure it is not in gear and the safety grate is covering the paddles and the drum is clear of debris. Once the mixer is running put it in gear to start the paddles, add required water and then the dry mix a little at a time to avoid clogging up the mixer and locking up the paddles. If for some reason the mixer does get locked up shut the mixer off if it has not stalled already take it out of gear. Get help from another employee; with the mixer still off, open the safety grate and have one employee start shoveling out all the mix into a mud tub or wheelbarrow and another holding the drum over on its side.
When the mixer is empty, tip the drum back up into its full upright position, add water to the drum, start the mixer back up, slowly re-engage the drive, allow the paddles to spin for a minute or so and the shovel the mix back into the mixer.
Take no short cuts to this process if the drum is not emptied all the way the dry mortar/stucco bond the paddles to the drum. When you start the engine and engage the drive, the drum will spin back up to its full upright position hitting the safety lock on the bottom of the drum. The centrifugal force can cause the mixer to flip over on its side causing serious injury or death to the operator.
This information is generally not in the operator’s manual and in my 37 years in construction I have only seen a mixer flip onto an employee once and that was to many times.
Other safety tips include do not work on the mixer when it is running unless you are a mechanic, and it is required. Keep the mixer clean and maintained this will extend the life of the mixer. If you have any questions that cannot be answered from the operator’s manual call the yard and speak with one of our mechanics.

Los mezcladores de mortero para mampostería y estuco existen desde hace mucho tiempo y las preocupaciones de seguridad no deben tomarse a la ligera Empecé como la mayoría, trabajando para un contratista de albañilería, aprendiendo los entresijos de mi trabajo. Mezclar mortero era una de esas tareas. Es una máquina simple de operar, llénela con gasolina, encienda el interruptor de encendido, tire del estrangulador, tire del cable y estará funcionando.

Cuando ingresas al mundo de la seguridad, todo cambia a medida que adquieres experiencia, ves las cosas con ojos diferentes a los que tenías como obrero o albañil. No es porque no te preocuparas por la seguridad, es porque pasas la mayor parte de tu tiempo observando a otros realizar estas tareas todos los días.
He visto mucho en los últimos 25 años como Director de Seguridad, aquí hay algunos consejos de seguridad para proteger a sus empleados de posibles lesiones o muerte mientras operan una mezcladora de mortero. Asegúrese de que estén usando el EPP requerido; consulte el manual del operador para obtener esta información.
Coloque la batidora en un terreno nivelado y antes de encender la batidora asegúrese de que no esté engranada y que la rejilla de seguridad cubra las paletas y que el tambor no tenga residuos. Una vez que la batidora esté funcionando, póngala en marcha para encender las paletas, agregue el agua requerida y luego la mezcla seca poco a poco para evitar obstruir la batidora y bloquear las paletas. Si por alguna razón la batidora se bloquea, apáguela si aún no se ha atascado y sáquela. Obtener ayuda de otro empleado; con la mezcladora aún apagada, abra la rejilla de seguridad y haga que un empleado comience a sacar toda la mezcla con una pala en una tina de barro o una carretilla y que otro sostenga el tambor de costado.
Cuando la mezcladora esté vacía, incline el tambor nuevamente hacia arriba a su posición completamente vertical, agregue agua al tambor, vuelva a encender la mezcladora, vuelva a conectar lentamente la transmisión, deje que las paletas giren durante aproximadamente un minuto y retire la pala mezclar de nuevo en la batidora
No tome atajos en este proceso si el tambor no se vacía por completo hasta que el mortero seco o el estuco unen las paletas al tambor. Cuando arranque el motor y engrane la transmisión, el tambor volverá a girar hasta su posición vertical completa golpeando el bloqueo de seguridad en la parte inferior del tambor. La fuerza centrífuga puede hacer que la batidora se vuelque de costado y cause lesiones graves o la muerte al operador
Esta información generalmente no se encuentra en el manual del operador y en mis 37 años en la construcción solo he visto una batidora voltearse sobre un empleado una vez y eso fue muchas veces.
Otros consejos de seguridad incluyen no trabajar en la batidora cuando esté funcionando a menos que sea mecánico y sea obligatorio. Mantenga la batidora limpia y mantenida, esto prolongará la vida útil de la batidora.
