With the Pandemic upon us all, there has been so much suffering, we have lost so many to this deadly virus. There are many ways to bring comfort to mourners, however, today I shall attempt to list the top 12 things you can do for a friend or acquaintance to comfort them during their time of bereavement. This list contains the things that clients have shared with me that they have appreciated from those who have taken the time and gone the extra mile to assist them, when they felt frightened and alone. You may have other things that you have done or that others have done for you, that have provided comfort and encouraged forward movement during recovery. If so, I would love to hear from you regarding these kindnesses, so that I can pass them on to others. 1. Say The Decedent’s Name In my opinion, the number one comfort that a mourner can receive is to hear their decedent’s name. When you see someone that has lost a loved one, rather than asking them how they are doing, offer a condolence that includes their loved one’s name. The survivor will find this kindness, much more comforting. Although you may feel apprehensive about it, hearing their loved one’s name offers them assistance in moving their decedent from a living participant in his or her life to a loving and fond memory; it moves them forward toward recovery and it brings comfort to know that other’s recognized and/or appreciated their loved one for his or her fine qualities. The sweet sound of their loved one’s name brings comfort, that no other gesture can provide. 2. Gifts Of Meaning When my grandson died three years ago, I received many gifts of flowers for his service. Although I appreciate each of those beautiful arrangements and their sweet fragrance, the gift that I treasure beyond any To A Survivor, 7A

Americans are slowly returning to their favorite mom-andpop shops and locally-owned restaurants. With COVID-19 cases falling, 23 percent of the population fully vaccinated, most states have lifted the strictest lockdowns and measures. Relief can’t come soon enough for small businesses. Small firms have borne the economic brunt of the Coronavirus, largely, because so many of their business models depend on in-person interaction. Thousands -- perhaps millions -will not survive. Restaurants have suffered massively with the sector losing 2.5 million jobs and $240 billion in sales, in 2020 alone. Things could have been much worse without the quick “pivoting” of entrepreneurs and the Vaccines. It is critical for elected leaders to understand the policies that brought us to this positive juncture, in order to make the right choices for the future. Experts didn’t know if drug makers could invent, test and produce vaccines for a brandnew disease as rapidly, as they did. The previous record for speedy vaccine development had been four years and it often takes 10 to 15. Yet Moderna and Pfizer, brought their Vaccines to market in less than one. In-person enterprises would not be able to re-open without Vaccines. It’s harrowing to think how the economy would fare in the face of multi-year lockdowns. While the pace of Vaccine Development has been dramatic, it’s no miracle. Industry and government officials have spent decades honing policies that facilitate rapid medical innovation. Hunger Games From Page 1A Setmelanotide (brand name: Imcivree), a drug recently approved for the treatment of severe obesity caused by certain genetic changes. The team’s findings shed new light on the way hunger is regulated and may help develop improved antiobesity medications. The MC4 Receptor is present in a region of the brain called: The Hypothalamus, where a cluster of neurons that compute the body’s energy balance by processing a variety of energy-related metabolic signals. When MC4 is activated, or “on” – as it normally is – it sends out commands that cause us to feel full, which means that, from the brain’s perspective, our default state is satiety. When our energy levels drop, The Hypothalamic cluster produces a: “time to eat” hormone
that inactivates, or turns off, the MC4 Receptor and sends out a “become hungry” signal. After we eat, a second “I’m full” hormone is released. It binds to the same active site on MC4, replacing the hunger hormone, turning the receptor back on and bringing us back to the satiety default. Mutations that inactivate MC4 cause people to constantly feel hungry. The Receptor, is a prime target for anti-obesity drugs, such as Setmelanotide, precisely because it’s a master switch: turning it on can control hunger while bypassing all other energyrelated signals. But until now, it was unknown how this hunger switch works exactly. The new study began with the predicament of one family, in which at least eight members, were plagued by persistent hunger and were severely obese. Most of them had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 70, this is about triple of the normal Body

Their medical history came to the attention of Hadar Israeli, a medical student pursuing PhD studies into the mechanisms of obesity under the guidance of Dr. Danny Ben-Zvi at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Israeli was struck by the fact that the family’s plight was due to a single mutation: one which was affecting the MC4 Receptor. She turned to Dr. Moran Shalev-Benami of Weizmann’s Department of Chemical and Structural Biology, asking whether new advances in electron microscopy could help explain, how this particular mutation could produce such a devastating effect. Dr. ShalevBenami decided to launch a study into the structure of MC4, inviting Israeli to join her lab as a visiting scientist. Together with Dr. Oksana Degtjarik, a postdoctoral fellow also in the lab, Israeli isolated large quantities of the pure MC4 Receptors from the

cell membranes, letting it bind with Setmelanotide and then determined, that its 3D structure using cryogenic electron microscopy. The study was conducted in collaboration with the teams of Dr. Peter J. McCormick from the Queen Mary University of London and Professor, Masha Y. Niv from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The 3D structure revealed that Setmelanotide activates the MC4 Receptor by entering its binding pocket, that is by directly hitting the molecular switch that signals satiety, even more potently than the natural satiety hormone. It also turned out, that the drug has a surprising helper: a Calcium Ion that also enters the pocket, enhancing the drug’s binding to the Receptor. In biochemical and computational experiments, the scientists found that, similar to the drug, Calcium also assists with the natural satiety hormone. Professor McCormick states
that: “Calcium helped the satiety hormone activate the MC4 Receptor, while interfering with the hunger hormone and reducing its activity.” “This was a truly unexpected finding,” says Dr. Shalev-Benami. “Apparently, the satiety signal can successfully compete with the hunger signal because, it benefits from the assistance of Calcium, which helps the brain restore the ‘I’m full’ sensation, after we eat.” The MC4’s structure also revealed that the entry of the Setmelanotide causes structural changes in the receptor; these changes appear to initiate the signals within the neurons that lead to the sensation of fullness. The study has explained how mutations in the MC4 receptor can interfere with this signaling, leading to never-ending hunger and ultimately, obesity. Moreover, the scientists have identified hotspots that crucially distinguish MC4 from similar Receptors in the same family. This should make it possible to design drugs that will bind only to MC4, avoiding side effects that may be caused by interactions with other Receptors. “Our findings can help develop improved and safer antiobesity drugs, that will target the MC4 Receptor with greater precision,” Dr. Shalev-Benami says. Of course, I thought it was a lovely and thoughtful gift; however, it wasn’t until after my grandson’s service that the value of this gift revealed itself. My treasured memory box has special quotes and images on its exterior and it sits on the credenza, in my arrangement room. Because of its exceptional healing powers, I placed the box in plain sight. That way, my client’s and their communities of supporters can realize that a memory box is a very thoughtful and powerful gift. The most valuable thing about my memory box, is that it provides a special, protected place for my most precious and sacred memories. These states of existence, render a survivor less able to perform daily tasks and chores. Receiving service from loved ones, neighbors, friends and associates, keep the survivor’s life functioning. Looking out of the window and seeing your neighbor ride his or her lawnmower across your lawn is not only appreciated, it also provides a level of safety as others who might seek out victims, will be less likely to realize your survivor is in a compromised stage in life. Simply seizing the opportunity to take care of something that you notice needs tending to, provides the survivor with comfort, love and increased safety. 4. Meaningful Expression Sharing a touching or appre-
ciated story about the decedent is greatly appreciated by survivors. Quite often, you may be in possession of a wonderful thought or appreciated deed, provided by the decedent, which the survivor may be completely unaware of. If you are emotionally unable to relay detailed stories of their loved one’s deeds or actions, a simple statement of appreciation, can be very encouraging. “John was so thoughtful in bringing muffins every Monday morning to work. I will miss his kindness and generosity” or “John always shared his gleaming smile and encouraged others, when they needed it most” these fine examples of expressing appreciation encourage the survivor and assists them in recovery. Sharing this information with the survivor brings them great comfort in knowing that their loved one was kind, appreciated and loved, by others. 5. Listening Lending an attentive ear to the survivor is a very generous gift. Quite often, the survivor will tell and retell the same stories of their loved one, as they travel down their road to recovery. An attentive listener who does not interrupt, interject or inform the survivor that they have already told the story, is a gift from heaven. Listening as though you have never heard the story, allows the survivor to reflect on their past with their loved one and moves him or her from a living participant in life to a treasured memory within the survivor’s heart. It allows the survivor to grow stronger, to accept and adjust to their new reality. 6. Skill Sharing Especially upon the death of a spouse or parent, skills provided by the decedent may place the survivor, in a precarious situation. Quite often, the survivor relied upon the decedent for maintenance, service, companionship and counseling. The absence of these contributions, can place vulnerabilities and increased expense upon the survivor when they are in a compromised state emotionally, physically, mentally
and/or, financially. Offering to share your skills and/or teach the survivor how to perform these skills, is an amazing gift which provides independence and liberty. Sometimes the survivor is too elderly to perform such skills due to physical or mental health weaknesses. In these cases, service is a better option. 7. Home Visits During bereavement, survivors are less likely to venture out of their homes. Therefore, without home visits from friends and family, survivors may become reclusive and unable in the future to reestablish social behavior. A quick five minute visit will not be intrusive and provides just enough stimulation to keep social skills active, without imposing. Later on, as the survivor moves toward recovery, visits may increase in time, allowing the survivor additional opportunities to practice conversational skills and social graces. 8. Grave Maintenance As mentioned before, survivors are in a compromised state during bereavement. Maintaining the grave of their loved one is often more, than they can bear. Maintaining or freshening up a grave for a survivor is an endearing gift of love and service. 9. Cemetery Visits Early after a burial, cemetery visits can be difficult and uncomfortable for the survivor. A supportive friend to accompany the survivor is a generous gift of time, support and love. It is not necessary to say a word during these visits and your presence alone, is more valuable than you realize. In some cases, the survivor is unable, due to physical restrictions or limitations to actively visit the cemetery. In such cases, your assistance surpasses monetary value. Quite often, just a ride there and a brief glimpse
through the car window is more than the survivor ever thought possible. This is a loving and generous gift, as well. 10. Prayers When my daughter lost her son, she told me that she felt each and every prayer offered on her behalf. What an amazing statement. My daughter needed those prayers to survive such a tragic and soul breaking loss. To this day, those who offered prayers on her behalf are included in my nightly prayers. Although I am sure that I cannot identify
each and every one of our friends, family and associates who prayed on her behalf, I know that God knows who they are. Therefore, I offer appreciation for their thoughtfulness and kindness toward her and supplicate on their behalf to receive any blessings of which they stand in need. I know she does too. 11. Send Cards, Letters, Texts And Emails Although today’s life may not offer us time for home visits or phone calls, we all have a moment to quickly type up a letter, text or email and if we are really feeling generous, a card is a beautiful token of affection that lets the survivor know that we are thinking of them, that we are mindful of their pain and that we hope that life is improving for
them. This small and inexpensive gesture can lift sad spirits and lighten a dark day. Continuing to send communications throughout the year, each time you think of the survivor, helps him or her to feel valued and loved. 12. A Day Out When a survivor has lost a significant loved one, social engagements and situations may become very difficult. A simple invitation to go out for coffee or shopping at a favorite location can help break the “out of the house” ice for the survivor. Venturing out accompanied by a friend or family member, offers security to the survivor that he or she will not be alone if faced with a vulnerable or uncomfortable situation. Perhaps assuring a survivor that you will shield them from discomfort or danger, will assist in broadening their comfort level. Familiarity, service and traditions, definitely bring the most comfort to survivors. Please consider these suggestions when looking for a way to assist or console a survivor. Good News on the COVID-19 Front By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
Yes, there is good news on the COVID-19 front, but there is still a bit of confusion as to what is allowed and what is not. Governor DeSantis has lifted all of the Florida State Rules, but Broward County has recently adopted certain rules with a 7-2 vote. The County has adopted rules that apply with the CDC, even if you have been vaccinated. Wash your hands regularly, wear a mask, socially distance and large gatherings in public spaces are not permitted without permit. Restaurants can be open at 100% inside only, “if the tables are separated by 6 feet.” It needs to be noted that Broward County has filed a lawsuit against the Governor for taking the stand that wipes out every local government’s ability to collect fines and levy any more. In our City, we did issue fines, but not many. We opted for warnings first and then if there were repeat offenders, we did issue a fine. The circumstance was difficult as without directly witnessing offences, it was difficult to issue fines. The County has taken the stand that businesses can be closed. Our City is still not 100% open, City Manager Earle has informed our commission and staff of a phased in approach with a goal of being fully opened up by June 15th. I am sure that masks will still be required and it
is still a known fact that masks still help to stop the spread. The Hepburn Center has opened for our Famous Senior Program, PAL Football and Cheerleading are underway. Our parks are also being gradually opened. The YMCA gym, pool and classes are opened, but lockers rooms are not open yet and of course, masks are always required. In Condominiums, since they are private property, they must follow the rules established by their board of directors, the rules regulating them, were lifted by the Governor, awhile back. Our City attorney, has stressed that every board should follow the advice of their attorneys but, this does not mean, that there should not be precautions with social distancing and masks. Everyone needs to realize, that we need people vaccinated, before we are out of the woods. Vaccines are safe. J&J was just given the clearance to go ahead with their Vaccine and many places are available for the Vaccine, even without a wait. The pause in J&J also created communication issues and too many people are waiting. Obviously, if you believe you are at high risk, then you should speak with your doctor because the longer it takes for the super majority of people to get vaccinated, the longer it will take for us to get back to normal. Broward will move forward with more openings only, when
50% of the population has received a Vaccine and the infection rate drops below 5%, for 10 consecutive days. Businesses do have a right to protect their employees and staff. We take that same position. So, no matter what you think is your right, may not be once you enter a place of business: No Shoes, No Shirt, No Mask, No service, We are in this together! The argument that you are 100% free to do as you like is simply wrong. Take a look at what is happening around the globe with countries shutting down again. I have been receiving emails about Scavo Park. This is a prime example of a few misguided and sadly vile individuals ruining everyone else’s enjoyment. Scavo Park guests have been abusive to our staff, defecated in the park and continue not to follow any guidelines. It has become the worst park for enforcement problems throughout our City! To address the enforcement problems, our staff has proposed placing a decorative fence around the entire park to regulate after hour access. When this park was built, I was not a fan of closing in any park with fencing, I have always believed that they should be as welcoming to the public as possible, with that said, I do want safe parks for everyone to enjoy. Ingalls Park has fencing around and other parks have
fencing around specific areas for safety. The main concerns have been from Venetian residents, who bought their homes with having direct access without having to go onto a main roadway. This item, I am sure will be discussed at our next commission meeting on May 5th, I do believe there is work to be done with this issue, I will be requesting we look at gates that can be opened and closed at the entry points to the Venetian Townhomes. I also want to announce that our Commission, has reached an agreement with our Police Union on their contract. This is such an important step in the right direction. While in every contract negotiation, the parties do not get 100% of what they came to the table asking for, the contract was ratified by our men and women in Blue, we still have a long way to go and we are hiring new officers, but, like many departments around the County, we are losing officers to retirement or other agencies and sadly, they have grown tired of the attacks on their profession. Over the past months, I have been heart broken like many of you to see our Police Forces under attack because of some bad and yes, criminal officers. This is not the normal, it has just become more and more publicized. There do need to be Criminal Justice Reforms, but, the discussion by extreme pro-
gressives to defund police and the rise of Antifa have become just as bad as the White Supremist and Insurgents, we need measured, well thought out and realistic changes. The call for reforms around the nation are important, because many agencies do not have in place what we have in place. We in Hallandale Beach, still need training, it needs to be robust and continual, therefore, it is extremely important to have a fully staffed department and if you are training, you are not on patrol! Training also costs money, it is refreshing to see on the National level that there is a focus on helping our cities and our departments. Simply said, crime is on our streets, there has always been and there always will be, there are criminals that commit and engage in violent crimes and they need to be stopped! We need to understand that we have fine men and women that work every day, who leave their families and homes to protect ours, this is the true reality!
