Michael Kenton received his masters degree in physical therapy in Health Sciences from Long Island University, Brooklyn, New York in 1993. He later earned certification in Personal Training from the International Sports and Fitness Training Association.

He has nearly 20 years of experience treating patients with orthopedic and neurological disorders. At his facility, he and his therapists treat patients following sports related injuries, car accidents, joint replacements, patients suffering from arthritis, neck and back pain, and those who have suffered from the debilitating effects of strokes and balance disorders.

“Individualized physical therapy care is extremely effective in a patientʼs recov-

ery,” Mr. Kenton says. “But the sooner treatment begins, the better the likelihood of success. With our current managed care system, by the time a patient is referred to us, a problem may have intensified. Destination casinos cannot be a reality until the playing field is fair for all - especially in Hallandale Beach!

‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’

HALLANDAE BEACH – This weekend Gulfstream Park and Mardi Gras kicked of their racing seasons.

While the rest of the state grapples with destination casinos these two venues have been staples to the Florida economy for decades and a part of the rich fabric of Hallandale Beach. Dania Jai Lai, Pompano Park, Calder Race Track, Flagler Dog Track and Miami Jai Lai also share rich history in South Florida and have brought many jobs, tax revenue and tourism.

We all need to collectively support these tracks and demand a level playing field for our existing businesses.

The city has taken a position that destination casinos will be opposed until all existing venues that are already in existence have parity. This means the same casinos games and tax rate afforded to destinations or expanded gaming in the state. The local papers have been doing a good job of covering this issue except for one major concern.

Growth Management laws were changed last year and these venues are not going to be held to the same level of accountability or de-

velopment impacts as our current businesses.

The one focus that has been left out is how destination casinos can be integrated into existing communities without adversely impacting them. This is not only the impacts to existing businesses, but natural resources, roads and other infrastructure that comes along with large developments. There is very loose language in the current draft of the bills that could be removed by a simple vote of a committee.

Hallandale Beach has had years of experience with gaming and years ago with full casinos. We know what works and what does not. The city is also very fortunate to have long standing community partners that have worked side by side with the city to integrate their vision with

ours. These venues have provided many jobs and have supported our local economy. In addition to jobs, they have added to our community by providing more entertainment choices for all ages. Do not let Tallahassee tell us what they want. We need to collectively let them know what we want.

Gulfstream Park hosted the Hallandale Beach POPS first concert of the year on Sunday. The season will continue on January 8th at 7:30 PM. They also hosted the City Holiday Celebration presented by the Hallandale Beach Parks Department. Mardi Gras will be hosting the Annual Toy Runs this Sunday starting at 9:30 am. These are just a few of the many events our community partners help the city to provide to our residents and the surrounding communities. There are many more activities taking place over

This past week I had the opportunity to address the Broward Condo and Co-Op Organization that meets at the Hallandale Beach Library. The topics discussed pertain to all condominiums. I shared some budget updates and items that every condo should be aware of. The city has reduced the cost of permits for individualʼs hot water heaters and air conditioner replacement to a flat fee of $50. In the past these permit fees totaled over 100 dollars; often more than the units themselves. The city has also adjusted our sanitation rates to be more competitive with other vendors. The city is working directly with condos to implement recycling programs. As a final note, I stressed that before doing any repairs or work in condo unit ,check the permit requirements.

Fire Chief Dan Sullivan updated the group on what is now required for safety codes.

The major city change is there no longer a requirement for alternative power source for elevators. This was changed by ordinance, but is still encouraged.

The city does still require that buildings file an Emergency Operation Plan. A model draft plan is available on the cityʼs website. Building will have to be in compliance with state requirements. Sprinkler systems are no longer required so long as the majority of condo unit owners vote to opt out of the requirement.

This vote must be officially recorded.

Chief Dwayne Flournoy updates the group on services available from the department. HPD does work with condo boards and residents with investigations of possible fraud. The city also provides a program to assist buildings in improving safety around their properties and commons areas.

Being a racing fan, attending many dates through the course of a meet, I tend to see little changes such as the kiosks that borders the restaurants and businesses. That saves on standing in line. Great touch!

The other thing is the video board, which has always shown the current race, but now you are seeing the race from different angles. Fans loved it.

I always like to talk with first timers to the track to get their feeling on the entire facility. Detroitarea newlyweds Karen and Jessie Miller had flown into two the area a day early - before a cruise out of Miami.

Neither had ever been to Gulfstream. Both were very impressed at what the entire facility had to offer. Not just racing, poker and slots, but the fact that they ate at Christine Lee's and bought some early holiday presents at a few other stores.

"We have casinos and racing back home, Karen said. "But nothing like this. I think this idea could work here faster than where we live. You need to be in Florida to have everything outdoors like this.

Where the Millers were rookies at Gulfstream, Ricky Pierre is a regular.

Leaves his home in upstate New York at the end of December and comes to Hollywood and Hallandale Beach, of course, for the racing season.

It's people like Pierre who noticed the changes made and how very friendly many of the employees were. He also was grateful to be here that one extra month, watching his favorite entertainment - thoroughbred racing.

"I sit there in my home during the summer and picture what the racing season will be like in Florida," Pierre said. "I also go to Belmont, but it's the chance to come here in the sunshine, wear shorts and a shortsleeve shirt and be in an atmosphere with likemided people."

Fourth annual PAL comedy fundraiser was a huge success

They came, they ate, they drank and they roared with laughter as the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League hosted itʼs 4th annual comedy show at Gulfstream Park featuring four hilarious comedians entertaining a packed house on Saturday evening, December 3rd.

Hallandale Beach Police Major Ken Cowley tapped the resources of Paul Kiley who runs PM Comedy Productions that books comedians for fundraisers and has assisted the Hallandale Beach PAL the past four years bringing some extraordinary talent to South Florida from Boston.

This yearʼs show featured four extremely funny entertainers including Brain Kiley(Paulʼs brother) who has worked as a staff writer on the Conan OʼBrien show and has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Kiley has been nominated 12 times for a Prime Time Emmy Award for writing. Kileyʼs quick wit left the audience howling.

Patty Ross will be remembered as the first female comic to grace the stage for PAL as her sarcastic material focused on growing older and the everyday problems that we encounter with our spouses and diminishing capabilities both mentally and physically. An actress as well as a comedian, Ross will be appearing in an upcoming movie with Adam Sandler.

Paul Nardizzi has been a Boston Comedian for twenty years and has been seen frequently on Comedy Central as well as the Conan OʼBrien Show. Paul is the author of two books and thoroughly amused the crowd.

The final performance came from the “Godfather of Boston Comedy” Don Gavin. Gavin was a return performer to Hallandale Beach and his wry and sardonic style of comedy left the audience begging for more material. Gavin is truly a polished professional when it comes to making folks laugh.

Comedian Tony V served as the eveningʼs MC and was well remembered from last yearʼs show for his great entertainment. Tony delighted the crowd between comedians drawing great laughter from the audience.

For a paltry $35 admission price, patrons received a delicious buffet dinner and a complimentary beverage from the bar. There were many gifts donated for the silent auction and Cowley especially thanks PAL Program Director Jonathan Carrillo as well as Sergeant Ricky Buoni and Officer Chris Taylor for their great efforts. Additionally, Michelle Dimitri, Ken Mosley, Stacey Fisher, Patty Ladolcetta. and Pat Brennan from Hallandale Beach were instrumental in the eveningʼs success and Joe Kessel is credited as the leading ticket seller.

Fighting arthritis? Exercise tips for all ability levels (ARA) - When it comes to fighting arthritis, there's no arguing with the axiom "move it or lose it." Movement and physical activity have been proven effective in relieving arthritis pain and, in some cases, delaying the onset of symptoms. But if you've been recently diagnosed with arthritis, or have been battling the disorder without much success, you may be unsure just what, or how much, physical activity will help you.

One in five American adults has arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Yet only 16 percent of those

with arthritis strongly agree that they are confident they can manage their pain, according to research by the Ad Council. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and it can make the simplest activities difficult.

Talk to your doctor about what types of activities will be appropriate for your mobility level. He or she may advise you to begin with simple, low-impact exercises, such as walking or water aerobics.

Don't overlook opportunities to work low-intensity exercise into your daily routine. Activities such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming

and washing windows are great ways to incorporate beneficial movement into your day. Take the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator when you're shopping at the mall, and park at the far end of the lot and enjoy the stroll to the door when you go grocery shopping.

Gentle stretching is essential for all ability levels, and definitely manageable for those with lesser mobility.

Stretching helps keep joints and muscles limber. In addition to simple aerobic activity, stretching exercises such as tai chi or yoga can help fight arthritis pain.

MODERATE MOBILITY The Arthritis Foundation recommends at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity every week. You should do at least 10 minutes at a time and

spread your activity throughout the week.

Those with moderate levels of mobility should be able to achieve this goal, provided they choose activities appropriate for their overall health and fitness level.

Moderate intensity physical activity can include sports like badminton, bowling and golf. Walking faster than 3 mph or while holding weights also qualifies as moderate activity. You may opt to incorporate in your exercise regimen both fun activities, such as dancing or cycling, with practical ones like carrying firewood, doing yard work or washing and waxing the car.

HIGH MOBILITY If you exercised regularly prior to your diagnosis you may have better mobility, and could benefit from increasing your activity level. Aim for five hours of moderate-intensity or 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity every week.

Incorporating a mix of different activities will not only help keep you moving, but can enhance your enjoyment of your exercise time.

Consider including in your routine exercise like jogging, swimming or cross-country skiing and higher-impact sports such as basketball, tennis or volleyball.

Expert Tips for Staying Healthy Into the New Year

(ARA) - While the winter months bring the joys of snowy days, holiday feasts and New Year's resolutions, they can also be a challenging time to stay healthy - especially for people living with diabetes. Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Lara Hassan notes that maintaining blood sugar levels during the winter months can be done.

"Nearly 26 million Americans are living with diabetes," says Hassan, a registered dietitian and a CDE on the Sanofi US CDE Help Team.

"When setting goals and resolutions for the New Year, it is extremely important to remember that just a few simple decisions can help those living with diabetes better maintain their blood sugar levels." Below are a few of her helpful tips: WATCH THE STARCHES The winter months are notorious for their adverse effect on our waistline, predominately due to the abundance of holiday meals and parties.

Hassan's golden rule: Up your vegetable intake and prepare no more than two starchy dishes when preparing meals. When it comes time to hit the buffet, Hassan says to scan the selection first and then decide what you want. Though drinks like hot cocoa and eggnog may be seasonal favorites, Hassan suggests opting for lower carbohydrate beverages such as seltzer or diet cola.

MAINTAIN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Though the tendency during the cold months may be to hunker down in front of the fireplace, it is extremely important to maintain physical activity. If you can't make it to the gym or do not want to brave the outdoors for a walk, Hassan suggests finding alternate sources of exercise, such as walking down every aisle at the grocery store or taking an extra lap or two around the mall while

shopping. Simple things like walking around the house while on the phone or stretching during TV commercials can also make a difference.

KEEP ON TRACK WITH TREATMENT While the temptation to cheat on your diet or routine may be greater during the winter, Hassan reminds her patients that adherence to treatment is paramount: "Things like ski trips and long-distance vacations can interfere with your usual habits. Skipping or delaying your treatment can make your blood sugar levels harder to control."

Hassan says that a lot of her patients opt for the once a day insulin Lantus® (insulin glargine [rDNA origin] injection), which comes in the Lantus® SoloSTAR®, a disposable pre-filled pen, as part of their overall diabetes treatment plan which includes a healthy diet, exercise and oral medications.

Hassan also notes it's important to work with a healthcare professional - no matter what time of year - to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Spend you holidays at this Hallandale Beach historical landmark

CURCI HOME TOURS

This holiday season promises to be a very special one with many visitors making the Curci House a destination during December, and ringing in the new year in style in January.

The landmark Curci House will open its doors for tours on Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11.

They will open on Saturday Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Located at 324 S.W. 2nd Ave., the tours, provided by members of the City of Hallandale Beach Historical Preservation Board, takes visitors into this unique world that began in 1907 when

Frank Anthony Curci, with his wife, Rosina and three small children, settled in Hallandale Beach at S.W. 5th Ave.and W. Dixie Highway.

As a pioneer family, they struggled, yet grew prosperous by reinvesting their family profits into land purchases, which they used for additional tomato fields and fruit groves. As the family grew to a total of 11 children, so did Curci's vision as he expanded into the construction business.

Mr. Curci spoke five languages and was also an accomplished violinist, displaying his talents with the John Phillip Sousa Orches-

tra during the 1896 grand opening of the Henry Flagler Royal Palm Hotel in Miami.

In 1924, the family built their dream home, "Villa Providence," on their 11acre site. The

Mediterranean style villa was constructed of concrete filled terra-cotta block walls, with Dade pine floors and imported Cuban tile details throughout. The most extraordinary feature

was the array of imported Italian color glass that was imbedded in the exterior stucco finish. The Italian glass sparkled in the sunlight and glowed in the moonlight.

In 1926, when the Great Hurricane hit, dozens of nearby residents sought shelter with the family as their homes were damaged or destroyed. The Curci home stood strong, sustaining only minor damage, Frank, Rosina and family lived in the home until the early 1950s.

Make the holidays one to remember this year, turning back the clock nearly 90 years with a visit to the Curci House.

With the holiday season right around the corner, the City of Hallandale Bach got into the spirit last Friday night with a huge celebration at the Village of Gulfstream. FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING

Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue will be flushing Fire Hydrants in the Southwest section of the City from November 13 to December 18.

This process is necessary to ensure, for your safety, there is adequate water pressure and flow in the event of a fire.

Flushing the hydrants may temporarily cause an orange tint to your water. This in no way indicates any contamination of the water but may cause discoloration in your wash and is only a temporary condition. During this period, please open your faucets and check for discolored water.

Should the water continue to run discoloration longer than five to ten minutes please contact the Water Department at (954) 457-1632.

Helpful tips for holiday entertaining, including a sweet surprise
