This past weekend, the opening of Gulfstream Park and the Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach were two huge events that attracted thousands. Gulfstream’s earliest ever opening will be huge for the local economy that needed a shot in the arm for the mont of December.

I know that one weekend does not tell the full story, but after Gulfstream Park's first ever December racing date - where the track opened its doors on Dec. 3, I think people are going to like this. From the moment you walk into this fabled facility that Hal-

landale Beach has always been proud to call its own, you can see changes. Positive ones that many racing fans even applauded and fully recognized. In these tough economic times, this could really be that silver lining we have all been looking for. This

Located in the rear of the facility is a larger separate room which is the dedicated “Balance Center.” Here you will find visual interactive balance machines and exercise equipment geared specifically for the treatment of dizziness and balance. Patients are scheduled accordingly in order for the therapists to develop a physical therapy program hand-tailored for their specific needs. And the patients love the individual attention they receive. “Our patients are scheduled on an individual basis, which allows us to treat them for the length of time needed for their particular problem,” says Mr. Kenton. Wellcareʼs goal is to detect problems early and customize a treatment that will restore patientʼs preinjury level of function. Each patient receives individualized therapy required for a successful outcome. Michael Kenton, a licensed physical therapist and clinical director reports, “Debilitation from physical disorders or the normal aging process can often be delayed if problems are detected early enough through an in-depth physical screening. But too often, people allow their conditions to deteriorate before they seek treatment.” On a patientʼs first visit to Wellcare, he or she is given an indepth physical therapy evaluation that includes medical history, a check of vital signs, tests for strength and flexibility, posture evaluation, balance and functional assessment. “We want to identify dysfunction before it can lead to severe functional de-

cline,” Michael says. “I make a professional assessment based on the patientʼs current complaints and the findings following evaluation. “Then I create a treatment plan and forward it to the patientʼs physician for review. From that point on, I work very closely with both the patient and his or her physician to ensure that the patient achieves their goals.” Michael Kenton received his masters degree in physical therapy in Health Sciences from Long Island University, Brooklyn, New York in 1993. He later earned certification in Personal Training from the International Sports and Fitness Training Association. He has nearly 20 years of experience treating patients with orthopedic and neurological disorders. At his facility, he and his therapists treat patients following sports related injuries, car accidents, joint replacements, patients suffering from arthritis, neck and back pain, and those who have suffered from the debilitating effects of strokes and balance disorders. “Individualized physical therapy care is extremely effective in a patientʼs recov-

ery,” Mr. Kenton says. “But the sooner treatment begins, the better the likelihood of success. With our current managed care system, by the time a patient is referred to us, a problem may have intensified. If we deal with a problem early on, we are more likely to reach the desired outcome.” “Our goal at Wellcare is for people to think of us as a primary stage in their program for good health rather than following medication and other therapies that have failed.” Providing quality rehabilitation services is Wellcares primary objective. Michael Kenton states, “We treat each patient as if he or she were our only client.” We not only provide detailed, customer treatment programs, but also the personalized support and encouragement that will help a patient throughout their rehab process.” Wellcare Rehabilitation's balance program focuses on the evaluation of fall risk & treatment strategies to prevent their occurrence. “Most falls are preventable if balance & safety are addressed early on” states Mr. Kenton. Wellcare Rehab is offering a complimentary fall risk as-

sessment to help their patients start out the new year on the right foot. Wellcare Rehabilitation & Balance Center is conveniently located at 304 West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Hallandale Beach, a few blocks west of Dixie Highway, minutes from both Aventura and Hollywood. Parking is very accessible and is located in the rear of the building.

Destination casinos cannot be a reality until the playing field is fair for all - especially in Hallandale Beach!

HALLANDAE BEACH – This weekend Gulfstream Park and Mardi Gras kicked of their racing seasons. While the rest of the state grapples with destination casinos these two venues have been staples to the Florida economy for decades and a part of the rich fabric of Hallandale Beach. Dania Jai Lai, Pompano Park, Calder Race Track, Flagler Dog Track and Miami Jai Lai also share rich history in South Florida and have brought many jobs, tax revenue and tourism. We all need to collectively support these tracks and demand a level playing field for our existing businesses. The city has taken a position that destination casinos will be opposed until all existing venues that are already in existence have parity. This means the same casinos games and tax rate afforded to destinations or expanded gaming in the state. The local papers have been doing a good job of covering this issue except for one major concern. Growth Management laws were changed last year and these venues are not going to be held to the same level of accountability or de-

velopment impacts as our current businesses. The one focus that has been left out is how destination casinos can be integrated into existing communities without adversely impacting them. This is not only the impacts to existing businesses, but natural resources, roads and other infrastructure that comes along with large developments. There is very loose language in the current draft of the bills that could be removed by a simple vote of a committee. Hallandale Beach has had years of experience with gaming and years ago with full casinos. We know what works and what does not. The city is also very fortunate to have long standing community partners that have worked side by side with the city to integrate their vision with

ours. These venues have provided many jobs and have supported our local economy. In addition to jobs, they have added to our community by providing more entertainment choices for all ages. Do not let Tallahassee tell us what they want. We need to collectively let them know what we want. The city will continue to work with our lobbyist to have our voices heard. You can also contact Senator Ellen Bogdanoff from Weston by e-mail at bogdanoff.ellyn.web@flsen and Miami Dade Representative Erik Fresen at Gulfstream Park hosted the Hallandale Beach POPS first concert of the year on Sunday. The season will continue on January 8th at 7:30 PM. They also hosted the City Holiday Celebration presented by the Hallandale Beach Parks Department. Mardi Gras will be hosting the Annual Toy Runs this Sunday starting at 9:30 am. These are just a few of the many events our community partners help the city to provide to our residents and the surrounding communities. There are many more activities taking place over

the next few weeks to celebrate the holidays. Please visit the city website at for more information. This past week I had the opportunity to address the Broward Condo and Co-Op Organization that meets at the Hallandale Beach Library. The topics discussed pertain to all condominiums. I shared some budget updates and items that every condo should be aware of. The city has reduced the cost of permits for individualʼs hot water heaters and air conditioner replacement to a flat fee of $50. In the past these permit fees totaled over 100 dollars; often more than the units themselves. The city has also adjusted our sanitation rates to be more competitive with other vendors. The city is working directly with condos to implement recycling programs. As a final note, I stressed that before doing any repairs or work in condo unit ,check the permit requirements.

Fire Chief Dan Sullivan updated the group on what is now required for safety codes. The major city change is there no longer a requirement for alternative power source for elevators. This was changed by ordinance, but is still encouraged. The city does still require that buildings file an Emergency Operation Plan. A model draft plan is available on the cityʼs website. Building will have to be in compliance with state requirements. Sprinkler systems are no longer required so long as the majority of condo unit owners vote to opt out of the requirement. This vote must be officially recorded. Chief Dwayne Flournoy updates the group on services available from the department. HPD does work with condo boards and residents with investigations of possible fraud. The city also provides a program to assist buildings in improving safety around their properties and commons areas.

I want to welcome back all the snowbirds that add to the fabric of our community. We have a wonderful “City or Choice” with many services to help our residents enjoy their stay. Happy Holidays! Life is uncertain, and it's important that the final resting place of a loved one be agreed upon. Our fullservice funeral homes and cemetery are

proud to be independently owned and locally operated. We are not a public company traded on the stock market. Michael Blasberg, General Manager, said, "We have directors with over 100 years of combined arranging experience and are sensitive to the needs of families. We strive to build on our long-term relationships and create new ones that will stand the test of time." The services provided by Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemetery along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert, though, dedicated to the Jewish community, are available to people from all walks of life. Although our cemetaries are strictly for Jewish burials, our funeral homes are available to service all faiths. Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director, said, "Whether your loved one is staying locally or transferring out of state, the funeral home is here for the needs of all people that we serve. The advantage of being privately owned and

managed is that decisions can be made quickly." "People make choices in life and plan ahead for many things," Rubin says. "When a death oc-

Shari Bradley, Marketing Director, said, "One of the benefits of dealing with us NOW is that you're planning in advance, saving money and relieving your family of stress by having to make the last minute decisions when youʼre not necessarily thinking rationally." "Approximately 90% of the families we service have been pre-arranged," Rubin said. gold when they tell friends of how great the experience was. Being a racing fan, attending many dates through the course of a meet, I tend to see little changes such as the kiosks that borders the restaurants and businesses. That saves on standing in line. Great touch! The other thing is the video board, which has always shown the current race, but now you are seeing the race from different angles. Fans loved it. I always like to talk with first timers to the track to get their feeling on the entire facility. Detroitarea newlyweds Karen and Jessie Miller had flown into two the area a day early - before a cruise out of Miami. Neither had ever been to Gulfstream. Both were very impressed at what the entire facility had to offer. Not just racing, poker and slots, but the fact that they ate at Christine Lee's and bought some early holiday presents at a few other stores. "We have casinos and racing back home, Karen said. "But nothing like this. I think this idea could work here faster than where we live. You need to be in Florida to have everything outdoors like this. Where the Millers were rookies at Gulfstream, Ricky Pierre is a regular. Leaves his home in upstate New York at the end of December and comes to Hollywood and Hallandale Beach, of course, for the racing season. It's people like Pierre who noticed the changes made and how very friendly many of the employees were. He also was grateful to be here that one extra month, watching his favorite entertainment - thoroughbred racing. "I sit there in my home during the summer and picture what the racing season will be like in Florida," Pierre said. "I also go to Belmont, but it's the chance to come here in the sunshine, wear shorts and a shortsleeve shirt and be in an atmosphere with likemided people." Gulfstreamʼs off-season improvements include: • Installing six enhanced, higher resolution Daktronics LED displays. • Construction of a new picnic area down the stretch • Additional, covered seating. • Installation of Trakus wireless technology to monitor horses during the race. • New concession and Ten Palms menus from executive chef Ralph

CANDY CANE SUCCESS After a great day at Gulfstream, our local journey took us north to Hollywood Beach, where the annual Candy Cane Parade took place - with the ocean as a the perfect night-time backdrop. Like other areas, this was one of those events that helps businesses -

Hollywoodʼs Great Neighborhoods Challenge is On! Find out how to win cash prizes for creating curb appeal

HOLLYWOOD - The Great Neighborhoods Challenge is now underway in every single part of the City of Hollywood and will continue until April 1, 2012. Fourth annual PAL comedy fundraiser was a huge success

They came, they ate, they drank and they roared with laughter as the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League hosted itʼs 4th annual comedy show at Gulfstream Park featuring four hilarious comedians entertaining a packed house on Saturday evening, December 3rd. Hallandale Beach Police Major Ken Cowley tapped the resources of Paul Kiley who runs PM Comedy Productions that books comedians for fundraisers and has assisted the Hallandale Beach PAL the past four years bringing some extraordinary talent to South Florida from Boston. This yearʼs show featured four extremely funny entertainers including Brain Kiley(Paulʼs brother) who has worked as a staff writer on the Conan OʼBrien show and has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Kiley has been nominated 12 times for a Prime Time Emmy Award for writing. Kileyʼs quick wit left the audience howling. Patty Ross will be remembered as the first female comic to grace the stage for PAL as her sarcastic material focused on growing older and the everyday problems that we encounter with our spouses and diminishing capabilities both mentally and physically. An actress as well as a comedian, Ross will be appearing in an upcoming movie with Adam Sandler. Paul Nardizzi has been a Boston Comedian for twenty years and has been seen frequently on Comedy Central as well as the Conan OʼBrien Show. Paul is the author of two books and thoroughly amused the crowd. The final performance came from the “Godfather of Boston Comedy” Don Gavin. Gavin was a return performer to Hallandale Beach and his wry and sardonic style of comedy left the audience begging for more material. Gavin is truly a polished professional when it comes to making folks laugh. Comedian Tony V served as the eveningʼs MC and was well remembered from last yearʼs show for his great entertainment. Tony delighted the crowd between comedians drawing great laughter from the audience. For a paltry $35 admission price, patrons received a delicious buffet dinner and a complimentary beverage from the bar. There were many gifts donated for the silent auction and Cowley especially thanks PAL Program Director Jonathan Carrillo as well as Sergeant Ricky Buoni and Officer Chris Taylor for their great efforts. Additionally, Michelle Dimitri, Ken Mosley, Stacey Fisher, Patty Ladolcetta. and Pat Brennan from Hallandale Beach were instrumental in the eveningʼs success and Joe Kessel is credited as the leading ticket seller. This successful production was the result of great support and sponsorship from the community and the list is quite extensive. Cowley is most grateful to the Gulfstream Park, Invicta for donating

When it comes to delicious food, Gamaroff’s in Hallandale Beach certainly knows how to please customers with Prime Rib, Rib Steak and a juicy hamburger, bursting with flavor.

Itʼs the newest hotspot for everyone!

By Marylynne Newmark Sun Times The lunch bunch discovered Gamaroffʼs by the $5.95 LUNCH SPECIAL sign on the sidewalk. Aventura and Hallandale dinner aficionados were intrigued by the banner gracing the entrance advertising 16-OZ ROAST BEEF SPECIAL $12.95, which also attracted the cocktail crowd. However, the biggest surprise to owner Michael Seltzer was the ʻtwenty-somethingsʼ who discovered the sports bar without any promotion at all. Seltzer is not new to the restaurant business. Canadians will recognize Michael and his family as owners of Le Biftheque, renowned between 1981 and 2005 for its 1,000-seat restaurant and retail butcher shop with 8 franchises in Quebec and Ontario. Visitors on the Florida West Coast might have frequented one of the Sam Seltzerʼs Steakhouses dotted from Fort Myers north. Having been brought up in the meat business in Canada, it was a natural for Michael Seltzer to develop his own marinades and recipes and make a career of introducing great beef meals at moderate prices. Every meal is special at Gamaroffʼs. Aside from the 16-oz roast beef at that remarkable price, the menu features a 16-oz strip sirloin at the same price,

A sizzling 8-oz filet mignon.

Top that off with Gamaroffʼs delicious chili or Mediterranean Greek salad and you have a scrumptious meal. Hope you vegetarians took note of the aforementioned veggie burgers and Greek salad. INTRODUCING THE ARP CLINIC AVOID SURGERY AND END PAIN If you have been told you need surgery or have chronic pain, we can help! Read this to learn about a new, noninvasive neurological soft tissue medicine treatment used by professional athletes, that is now available to the general public.

Try our painless, noninvasive technique that ends chronic pain Chronic pain is debilitating, and quickly erodes quality of life. Now, a new medical technology allows many patients suffering from back or joint pain to avoid surgery and return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoyed previously. The ARP (Accelerated Recovery Performance) Wave is a noninvasive method of delivering a pioneering new branch of neurological soft tissue medicine that teaches the body to avoid nonproductive compensation patterns that cause pain, and retrains it to allow the positive progression of treatment that accelerates recovery and restores a pain-free lifestyle. The treatment works on all joint problems, tears, sprains, fractures and repetitive injuries such as carpel tunnel. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional athletes such as Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas. The ARP Wave can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods. It is now available for the first time at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in Hallandale Beach. It is also possible for patients to be treated in their own homes. A TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT “This is a totally new concept in health care delivery,” says ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson of Minneapolis, MN. “All other branches of soft tissue medicine work on the area where symptoms manifest themselves. But that’s not the source of the pain. Ours works where your symptoms begin.” Pain from joint problems and injuries are the result of muscles improperly absorbing force. To try to avoid the pain, the brain turns to the muscles for protection. “The muscles react to the signals from the

brain by trying to eliminate the pain through abnormal contractions and movements,” Thompson says. “When this happens, the muscles no longer absorb force correctly. This, in turn, results in inappropriate compensation patterns that become imprinted in muscles and continue to cause pain.” THE ARP WAVE The painless, noninvasive ARP Wave treatment begins with a technician placing an electrode on the patient’s skin, where it identifies the signals being sent by the nervous system. “It is first a discovery tool,” Thompson explains. “By using it, we find the neurological disconnect that is causing the inability of the muscles to absorb force that results in pain. Wherever there has been trauma, there is inflammation and scar tissue, and that’s the area we concentrate on.” QUICK RECOVERY Once the source of the pain is correctly identified, treatment begins. The ARP Wave method consists of a series of painless treatments, usually about 10 of them, that are each about 20 minutes long. During the treatment, the Wave sends an electrical signal mimicking what the body should normally send on its own to direct force back to the muscles instead of to the joints, and to stimulate the muscles to correctly absorb shock again. “In other words, we retrain the muscles to do what they’re supposed to do,” Thompson says. Most patients are able to quickly return to activities they might not have been able to do for years. “Our goal is to help patients avoid surgery, as well as to replace time-consuming recovery methods like rest, ice and compression,” Thompson

ARP Wave inventor Denis Thompson, helps patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods at the Wellco Care ARP Clinic in Hallandale Beach. says. “ Accelerated Recovery Performance is, quite simply, a faster way to help the body heal.” HOW IT WORKS The ARP Wave works like this: First, it eliminates imprinting by the brain of nonproductive compensation patterns that cause the muscles to perform ineffectively, resulting in pain. The sooner the patient receives the treatment, the better. “By creating new pathways of communication between the brain and the muscles and reestablishing normal motor patterns early on, we can eliminate the imprinting more quickly,” Thompson says. Second, the treatment decreases swelling and inflammation by increasing blood circulation to the affected joint and limb. “This allows the restoration of mobility so the patient can get back to his or her normal activities and live an active

lifestyle again,” Thompson says. The cost is far less than surgery, and patients avoid the long recovery times and possible side effects associated with surgery. “The ARP Wave helps people feel better fast,” Thompson says. “Our method is not alternative medicine. It is a new, effective form of traditional medicine.” VIRTUAL CLINICS To ensure precise and effective treatment, technicians at ARP Wave clinics work through computerized technology directly with the expert staff at Minneapolis headquarters. South Florida patients can come to the Hallandale Beach clinic, or technicians can go to their homes to do the diagnosis and deliver the treatments. “One treatment is all it takes to prove it helps,” Thompson says. “Once you experience it, you’ll know it works.”

TESTIMONIALS For more testimonials, visit our Website: I had muscle pain in my lower back for years. I spent, and my insurance companies have spent, thousands of dollars by treating the pain (symptom) and not the injury (the muscles in my leg). My good friend and neighbor, a former NHL player and now agent, introduced me to ARP Wave. In one session last week, they identified the problem as a strained ligament in my left ankle By taping together my fibula and tibia (a job my injured ligament used to do) and using ARP Wave I am better distributing my body weight and am largely muscular pain free. I am looking forward to a summer at the cabin, doing all the things I used to do, and have not done recently. -- Tom Finnegan [Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl Defensive Dwight] Freeney is also using a device called ARP that is similar to a stem device to move the blood supply to the damaged ankle. The ARP operates differently from normal stem devices, but ARP has helped him in past years recover quickly from groin and hamstring pulls. -- Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, senior writer John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report. After 5 years and 15 doctors and no results, I came here and virtually am now muscle pain free. It’s nice to feel good again. Randy Hebrink, 48, Low Back, Neck, Rib, Shoulder Pain -Renville, MN I think the treatment is phenomenal. I came out of the University of Minnesota and was told I’d never play baseball again because of reconstructive surgery on my left wrist and with Ben and the ARP I haven’t had any trouble since. That along with my ankle this spring, they said I’d be out 6 weeks, I wasn’t even out a week and a half and I didn’t miss any games. I’m a walking case for Ben, but he’s helped me every time. BROWARD DENTAL IMPLANTS & COSMETIC CENTER "The Mouth and Body Connection" Teeth and gums reveal the inside story of your overall health. Find out what your dentist know about you.

Opening your mouth is somewhat like cracking open the hood of your car. An expert taking a quick look can get good sense of what is working, what is not and should be tuned up regularly to keep your body's system up and running at their best. Your teeth and Gums, it seems, speaks volumes about your wellbeing. For starters, there are conditions that affect oral health. Researchers continue look at association between cavities, gum disease, and heart disease, but a cause and effect relationship has not yet been established. There are some disease that are associated with an increased risk of infections. Diabetes increases the risk of gingival and periodontal inflammation and infection. Also loose teeth could be a sing of osteoporosis. When there's an underlying condition in play, your dentist may be able to draw an important connection between your oral health and your overall health . So sit back, relax, and open wide. Here's what you need to know about the mouth and body connection. ORAL HEALTH AND DIABETES Bleeding gums, dry mouth, fungal infections, cavities... these oral signs might clue your dentist into a serious health issue: Diabetes. These symptoms also might suggest other serious conditions such as HIV and Leukemia. Diabetes is one disease that we know can have direct impact on infections in the bones and gums around the teeth " says Dr . Bobadilla. Diabetes and your mouth have blood sugar in common. If blood sugar levels are out of control in your body they are out in your mouth as well. With sugar to feed on, bacteria find happy home in which to grow and thrive. A person with diabetes has more mouth woes to worry

Oral health and disease Patricia M. Bobadilla, D.D.S., Prosthodontist.

“If you have diabetes and periodontal disease, you have to get your blood sugar levels under control for both sake of your body and mouth." about : Uncontrolled diabetes reduces the body's first line of defense against infection, white blood cells, which can then put a person's oral health at risk. With bacteria accumulating around the gums from high blood sugar levels, periodontal or gum disease is a easy next step. Unfortunately, because diabetes lowers person's resistance to infections, managing periodontal disease isn't easy. Dr. Bobadilla says: " If you have diabetes and periodontal disease, you have to get your blood sugar levels under control for both sake of your body and mouth" Your dentist should be one of your best friends if you are among the 24 millions Americans living with diabetes. Frequent professional cleanings are important in helping to prevent or control periodontal disease, and home care requires flossing and brushing after every meal. ORAL HEALTH AND HEART DISEASE If on your last visit to the dentist you were told you had: * Gingivitis or Gum Inflammation * Cavities * Missing teeth * molar infections .... your dentist will say your mouth isn't the only thing being attacked. According to research from "American Heart

Patricia M. Bobadilla, D.D.S., Prosthodontist.

Association", poor oral health could increase your chances of developing heart disease. The exact way that periodontal infections are linked to heart disease are not known, we think it's the bacteria or the inflammatory response from the bacteria that might cause inflammation of the heart and more plaque buildup in blood vessels. " A good oral health in every age will help to protect your body from heart diseases." Dr Bobadilla says. ORAL HEALTH AND OSTEOPOROSIS Has the tooth fairy paid you a visit? That's the problem, since you stopped believing in mythical character decades ago. Your dentist may tell you that osteoporosis is a disease that causes to bones to become less dense over time as the body losses

calcium, could be at the root of tooth loss. Bones are bones, and that includes the jaw as the anchor point for the teeth, if your jaw becomes less dense and weakens, losing teeth becomes more and more likely. You want to be very conscientious about brushing and flossing if you have osteo-

porosis because if you get periodontal disease and you are already losing bone mass, you are at a higher risk of losing teeth." The risk of tooth loss is three times greater for women with osteoporosis who do not have disease. Dr. Bobadilla recommends: Women in particular should take calcium and vitamin D, exercise, eat right and do all of the things necessary to help prevent osteoporosis, which down the road could help you to prevent from losing a tooth. Every time you lose a tooth it's like

losing a pearl. Women need to be aware that they are at higher risk for periodontal disease and gum disease during puberty, pregnancy their menstrual cycle each month and the menopause. We know there is a correlation between high hormone levels in the body and inflammation in the gums surrounding the teeth." Fighting arthritis? Exercise tips for all ability levels (ARA) - When it comes to fighting arthritis, there's no arguing with the axiom "move it or lose it." Movement and physical activity have been proven effective in relieving arthritis pain and, in some cases, delaying the onset of symptoms. But if you've been recently diagnosed with arthritis, or have been battling the disorder without much success, you may be unsure just what, or how much, physical activity will help you. One in five American adults has arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Yet only 16 percent of those

with arthritis strongly agree that they are confident they can manage their pain, according to research by the Ad Council. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and it can make the simplest activities difficult. "Arthritis is common, costly, disabling and often thought to be a reality of the aging process that cannot be changed," says Dr. Patience White, vice president of public health for the Arthritis Foundation. "However, the limiting effects of osteoarthritis can be minimized with an action plan that includes physical activity." Regular exercise offers

two important benefits for those with osteoarthritis. It helps reduce the risk of developing other health

For healthy babies, yum-factor matters

(NewsUSA) - Taste matters when it comes to baby food. Erin Jarvis was getting desperate. Her 7-month-old daughter Autumn simply wasn't eating any store-bought food. Like so many moms and dads, Jarvis was worried her baby wasn't getting the nutrition needed for proper growth. Then she tried Baby Gourmet, a new arrival to the U.S. market and available at Walmart. "As soon as we tried Baby Gourmet, Autumn made a sound like 'Mmm' and ate the whole pouch in one sitting," Jarvis says with a smile. "We've tried a lot of different brands, but this is the only one she now finishes every time." Baby Gourmet was created by a mom who, like so many others, was worried about her child's well-being. "When Findlay wouldn't eat, I was frantic that she wasn't getting the nutrition she needed to be healthy," says Jennifer Broe. That duel concern over nutrition and taste is why she started making her own baby food and founded Baby Gourmet to help other mothers feed their children healthy, organic food. With flavors like Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp, Vanilla Banana Berry Risotto and Sweet Potato Pie with organic cinnamon, Baby Gourmet offers taste, variety and nutrition. Each package of Baby Gourmet passes strict nutritional and food safety guidelines and passes all USDA and organic requirements. But Baby Gourmet goes a step further -- every recipe starts out in Broe's own kitchen and ends with a personal taste test at the manufacturer. Now, relieved moms everywhere are starting to express their personal joy. "My daughter is just over 1 year old and has refused absolutely all food for seven months. She tried the sweet potato pie today and ate the entire thing in two sittings. I was so happy," Abby Ferris recently shared on Facebook. Another mother, Kristen Ellison, also posted "I have a 12 1/2-month-old who has refused all solids until we tried the pear and garden greens. It literally brought tears because we have tried everything!" Mothers interested in putting Baby Gourmet to the test can find nine choices at Walmart. Find stores near you, and learn more at

problems, and helps manage the disease. No matter your ability level, you can engage in meaningful, beneficial activity to help fight arthritis pain and symptoms. You should always discuss your abilities and needs with your health care provider before starting any exercise regimen. In addition, the Arthritis Foundation offers some physical activity tips for people of all mobility levels: LOW MOBILITY If you've been sedentary, starting out gently is essential. Talk to your doctor about what types of activities will be appropriate for your mobility level. He or she may advise you to begin with simple, low-impact exercises, such as walking or water aerobics. Don't overlook opportunities to work low-intensity exercise into your daily routine. Activities such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming

and washing windows are great ways to incorporate beneficial movement into your day. Take the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator when you're shopping at the mall, and park at the far end of the lot and enjoy the stroll to the door when you go grocery shopping. Gentle stretching is essential for all ability levels, and definitely manageable for those with lesser mobility. Stretching helps keep joints and muscles limber. In addition to simple aerobic activity, stretching exercises such as tai chi or yoga can help fight arthritis pain. MODERATE MOBILITY The Arthritis Foundation recommends at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity every week. You should do at least 10 minutes at a time and

spread your activity throughout the week. Those with moderate levels of mobility should be able to achieve this goal, provided they choose activities appropriate for their overall health and fitness level. Moderate intensity physical activity can include sports like badminton, bowling and golf. Walking faster than 3 mph or while holding weights also qualifies as moderate activity. You may opt to incorporate in your exercise regimen both fun activities, such as dancing or cycling, with practical ones like carrying firewood, doing yard work or washing and waxing the car. HIGH MOBILITY If you exercised regularly prior to your diagnosis you may have better mobility, and could benefit from increasing your activity level. Aim for five hours of moderate-intensity or 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity every week. Incorporating a mix of different activities will not only help keep you moving, but can enhance your enjoyment of your exercise time. Consider including in your routine exercise like jogging, swimming or cross-country skiing and higher-impact sports such as basketball, tennis or volleyball. Expert Tips for Staying Healthy Into the New Year

(ARA) - While the winter months bring the joys of snowy days, holiday feasts and New Year's resolutions, they can also be a challenging time to stay healthy - especially for people living with diabetes. Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Lara Hassan notes that maintaining blood sugar levels during the winter months can be done. "Nearly 26 million Americans are living with diabetes," says Hassan, a registered dietitian and a CDE on the Sanofi US CDE Help Team. "When setting goals and resolutions for the New Year, it is extremely important to remember that just a few simple decisions can help those living with diabetes better maintain their blood sugar levels." Below are a few of her helpful tips: WATCH THE STARCHES The winter months are notorious for their adverse effect on our waistline, predominately due to the abundance of holiday meals and parties. Hassan's golden rule: Up your vegetable intake and prepare no more than two starchy dishes when preparing meals. When it comes time to hit the buffet, Hassan says to scan the selection first and then decide what you want. Though drinks like hot cocoa and eggnog may be seasonal favorites, Hassan suggests opting for lower carbohydrate beverages such as seltzer or diet cola. MAINTAIN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Though the tendency during the cold months may be to hunker down in front of the fireplace, it is extremely important to maintain physical activity. If you can't make it to the gym or do not want to brave the outdoors for a walk, Hassan suggests finding alternate sources of exercise, such as walking down every aisle at the grocery store or taking an extra lap or two around the mall while

shopping. Simple things like walking around the house while on the phone or stretching during TV commercials can also make a difference.

KEEP ON TRACK WITH TREATMENT While the temptation to cheat on your diet or routine may be greater during the winter, Hassan reminds her patients that adherence to treatment is paramount: "Things like ski trips and long-distance vacations can interfere with your usual habits. Skipping or delaying your treatment can make your blood sugar levels harder to control." Hassan says that a lot of her patients opt for the once a day insulin Lantus® (insulin glargine [rDNA origin] injection), which comes in the Lantus® SoloSTAR®, a disposable pre-filled pen, as part of their overall diabetes treatment plan which includes a healthy diet, exercise and oral medications. Hassan also notes it's important to work with a healthcare professional - no matter what time of year - to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. INDICATIONS AND USAGE Prescription Lantus is a long-acting insulin used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes and adults and children (6 years and older) with type 1 diabetes for the control of high blood sugar. It should be taken once a day at the same time each day to lower blood glucose. Do not use Lantus to treat diabetic ketoacidosis. IMPORTANT SAFETY

"Nearly 26 million Americans are living with diabetes. When setting goals and resolutions for the New Year, it is extremely important to remember that just a few simple decisions can help those living with diabetes better maintain their blood sugar levels." LARA HASSAN CERTIFIED DIABETES EDUCATOR (CDE)

INFORMATION FOR LANTUS® Do not take Lantus if you are allergic to insulin or any of the inactive ingredients in Lantus. You must test your blood sugar levels while using insulin, such as Lantus. Do not make any changes to your dose or type of insulin without talking to your healthcare provider. Any change of insulin should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision. Do NOT dilute or mix Lantus with any other insulin or solution. It will not work as intended and you may lose blood sugar control, which could be serious. Lantus must only be used if the solution is clear and colorless with no particles visible. Do not share needles, insulin pens or syringes

with others. The most common side effect of insulin, including Lantus, is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which may be serious. Some people may experience symptoms such as shaking, sweating, fast heartbeat, and blurred vision. Severe hypoglycemia may be serious and life threatening. It may cause harm to your heart or brain. Other possible side effects may in-

clude injection site reactions, including changes in fat tissue at the injection site,

and allergic reactions, including itching and rash. In rare cases, some allergic reactions may be life threatening. Tell your doctor about other medicines and supplements you are taking because they can change the way insulin works. Before starting Lantus, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including if you have liver or kidney problems, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed. Lantus SoloSTAR is a disposable prefilled insulin pen. Please talk to your healthcare provider about proper injection technique and follow instructions in the Instruction Leaflet that accompanies the pen. For Full Prescribing Information for Lantus® please click here or visit or call 1-800-6331610.

Anti-aging beauty tips can help you prove that age is just a number

(ARA) - In a society focused on youth, aging remains a fact of life. Thankfully, scientific advancements and product innovations make it easier than ever to diminish dreaded signs of aging. Thinning hair is considered to be one of the most worrisome signs of aging, second only to wrinkles. In a study conducted by Nioxin, the No. 1 stylist choice for thinning hair, it was discovered that women are particularly apprehensive about seeing their locks lose density. Doctors and scientists know that as a person ages, changes occur from the head down, and it is important to practice an anti-aging regimen that targets every area of the body. Leading dermatologist Dr. Valerie Callender shares her top tips for looking

youthful. * Get thicker, fuller looking hair: Full, healthy hair is the ultimate sign of youth and 87 percent of women ages 18-55 feel a strong enough connection to their hair to consider it a part of their personality. But as chance might have it, as many as three out of four people in the United States experience hair thinning. "Thinning hair can be a result of poor scalp

health," says Callender. "It's important to clean and refresh the scalp, and for that I like Nioxin Hair and Scalp Systems." Nioxin Systems deliver thicker, denser looking hair in 30 days guaranteed. * Keep skin glowing: Not surprisingly, wrinkles are a major concern among women. The beauty industry is saturated with antiaging creams, serums and lotions, but most consumers

aren't reaping the maximum product benefits. To do so, it's essential to exfoliate daily. "Dead skin cells build up and form a barrier, making it difficult for products to penetrate the various layers of skin," cautions Callender. "Once you've created a clean base, protect your freshly glowing skin from the sun's rays and free radicals by applying a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen year round." * Eat right: A healthy diet affects not only weight, but can help maintain healthy, lustrous hair and glowing skin as well. "The right diet nourishes the entire body from the scalp down," says Callender. A diet rich in protein and iron is essential for a healthy scalp, and foods full of antioxidants promote glowing skin. For this purpose, enjoy

salmon and beans for healthy, lustrous hair, and blackberries, strawberries and plums for radiant skin.

MAINTAIN A WHITE, HEALTHY SMILE Stained and discolored teeth can make you appear older and unhealthier than you are. Be sure to get teeth cleanings with

a dental professional at least twice a year and floss at least once a day. Whitening toothpastes with peroxide are great for removing stains, and at-home teeth whitening strips are easier and more convenient to use than ever before. A smile says a lot about a person, so keep it healthy and youthful.

Spend you holidays at this Hallandale Beach historical landmark

This holiday season promises to be a very special one with many visitors making the Curci House a destination during December, and ringing in the new year in style in January. The landmark Curci House will open its doors for tours on Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11. They will open on Saturday Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Located at 324 S.W. 2nd Ave., the tours, provided by members of the City of Hallandale Beach Historical Preservation Board, takes visitors into this unique world that began in 1907 when

Frank Anthony Curci, with his wife, Rosina and three small children, settled in Hallandale Beach at S.W. 5th Ave.and W. Dixie Highway. As a pioneer family, they struggled, yet grew prosperous by reinvesting their family profits into land purchases, which they used for additional tomato fields and fruit groves. As the family grew to a total of 11 children, so did Curci's vision as he expanded into the construction business. Mr. Curci spoke five languages and was also an accomplished violinist, displaying his talents with the John Phillip Sousa Orches-

tra during the 1896 grand opening of the Henry Flagler Royal Palm Hotel in Miami. In 1924, the family built their dream home, "Villa Providence," on their 11acre site. The

Mediterranean style villa was constructed of concrete filled terra-cotta block walls, with Dade pine floors and imported Cuban tile details throughout. The most extraordinary feature

was the array of imported Italian color glass that was imbedded in the exterior stucco finish. The Italian glass sparkled in the sunlight and glowed in the moonlight.

In 1926, when the Great Hurricane hit, dozens of nearby residents sought shelter with the family as their homes were damaged or destroyed. The Curci home stood strong, sustaining only minor damage, Frank, Rosina and family lived in the home until the early 1950s. Make the holidays one to remember this year, turning back the clock nearly 90 years with a visit to the Curci House. For more information, call the Department of Parks & Recreation at 954-457-1452.

Hallandale Beach rings in the holidays - in style

With the holiday season right around the corner, the City of Hallandale Bach got into the spirit last Friday night with a huge celebration at the Village of Gulfstream. LEFT: Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper and PAL Board Member Barbara Southwick had plenty of fun. MIDDLE: Even though they planned and organized this event, Rebecca Munden-Correa and Bob Williams also found time to have some fun. RIGHT: Pattie Kvachuk, Borris, Claudia Cambero and Alex Caceres-Cambero also enjoyed the event.

Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue will be flushing Fire Hydrants in the Southwest section of the City from November 13 to December 18. This process is necessary to ensure, for your safety, there is adequate water pressure and flow in the event of a fire. Flushing the hydrants may temporarily cause an orange tint to your water. This in no way indicates any contamination of the water but may cause discoloration in your wash and is only a temporary condition. During this period, please open your faucets and check for discolored water. Should the water continue to run discoloration longer than five to ten minutes please contact the Water Department at (954) 457-1632.

Looking for instructors to teach recereational classes, programs

The Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department is always looking for instructors to teach recreational classes and programs.

If you are interested please call the parks and recreation offices at 954-457-1452.

Solving problems that damage your home and business

WATER LEAKS: DAMAGE HAPPENS QUICKLY It doesnʼt take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-theart technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition.

WORKING DIRECTLY WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to

sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, donʼt wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known al-

lergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one.

A JOB FOR PROFESSIONALS Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal

imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours.

GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards,

1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality.

1ST PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone

treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its preloss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door—it occurs unexpectedly. 1st Priorityʼs goal is to respond quickly and restore your home or business with the least amount of inconvenience to you.
