Salute to Education, Inc., a scholarship program created and funded by the South Florida Ford and Lincoln dealers and Ford Motor Company, is pleased to announce that they will be awarding $168,000 in scholarships and laptop computers to 112 recent Miami-Dade and Broward County high school graduates. The South Florida Ford and Lincoln dealers are committed to continue supporting South Florida students with their post secondary education, especially during the continued difficult economic times facing many in the South Florida community. The 112 scholarship winners will be recognized at the 22nd Annual Salute to Education Scholarship Awards Luncheon taking place on Saturday, June 4th at the Signature Grand in Davie. Nikolas Manheim (South Broward High) and Joselie Joseph (Hallandale High) were among the local recipients.

Kids Eat Free this Summer with the Summer BreakSpot HOLLYWOOD - Now that summer is here, it’s time to think about how children will eat healthy while school is out.

Kids ages 18 and under can enjoy a free nutritious meal and/or an afternoon snack during summer break through the “SummerBreakSpot” program.

Several locations in the City of Hollywood have joined more than 3,500 supervised locations in Florida to offer breakfast, lunch or snacks.

The menu varies each day. A typical breakfast is cereal, milk and fruit or a muffin or bagel. Lunch is typically a sandwich, chips, fruit, dessert and drink, but it may also be a hot meal. The Summer Food Program is funded by a federal grant from the Department of Agriculture.

CULPRIT #2: CLOGGED COOLING & HEATING UNITS These all-in-one heating-and-cooling units need attention, many condo owners tend not to realize that A/C units require twice yearly maintenance and that as the owner of the apartment, it’s their responsibility.

“The most common occurrence with the A/C units is that the filter is not replaced often enough,”. “Dust collects on the filter and on the coils, and through condensation it drips into the condensate pan and clogs the drain. Then the condensate pan overflows and leaks under the floor. And also people forget to clean them after doing renovation where there’s a lot of dust.”

Unfortunately, dripping A/C units tend to cause mold more often than other types of leaks, says 1st Priority, because they leak so slowly into the floor that it’s not noticed until a

large section of flooring shows damage. Nearby sheet rock can also be implicated as it wicks up the moisture from the floor.

CULPRIT #3: BROKEN WASHING MACHINE HOSE “We get a lot of these,” says 1st Priorty. “When you buy a washing machine, even the fancy ones, they install them with inexpensive rubber hoses—those are the ones that break, as opposed to the $40 stainless-steel-wrapped hoses you can buy at Home Depot that almost never leak.”

HOW TO TELL

WHETHER YOU HAVE MOLD IN YOUR APARTMENT So how do you know if you have a mold problem? It’s not always obvious, says 1st Priority.

• Water damage: You'll probably notice water damage and staining before you notice any signs of mold, because mold tends to grow faster inside than on the surface.

That’s why it’s important to address any moisture problems quickly.

• Odor: One of the first signs that mold might be present is a wet, musty smell or the smell of moldy, wet building materials. These indicate a moisture problem that can lead to mold; it doesn't necessarily mean you have mold.

• Spots: Black, gray, green or brown spotting.

(Note: This is similar to what you see on your bathroom surfaces— a.k.a. mildew. Those tend to be surface stains from moisture and soapresidue buildup.

• Health problems: Respiratory reactions including asthma are most common, though mold sensitivity can also cause headaches and skin rashes. Some people have symptoms immediately; for others, it develops over time.

Note that not all types of mold cause health problems; to identify which type you have, an industrial hygienist who is licensed to assess and remove mold will need to collect a smaple for testing.

WIND DRIVEN RAIN: WHY DO MY WINDOWS OR ROOF ONLY LEAK SOMETIME? Your windows & roof has been in perfectly fine condition for years, but one day you suddenly notice a damp spot forming on the ceiling or floor. A calm rain occurred a few days ago, but why now? We often get perplexed customers wondering why they are getting leaks after a mild

storm when everything was fine beforehand.

INCONSISTENT WINDOW & ROOF LEAKING We often get confused homeowners wondering why the windows & roof don’t leak with every rain. It is common for these homeowners to report that the area will leak, but not with every rain and they wonder what fluke is causing water to threaten their home structure.

What we find is that, rain propelled by wind often blows horizontally and may create the water intrusion that would otherwise be impossible at a regular rainfall angle.

Since many condos are built so high the wind driven rain at these heights is much stronger than at ground level, so the rain with penetrate into any opening over time. Even though the storm might have seemed like a gentle rain, the wind was still likely causing it to blow

into the crevices of your windows, sliding door, or roof.

Horizontal rain can easily blow past shingles, flashing, skylights, windows, and sliding doors. This may cause water damage to your walls, corner boards, floors, or ceilings whenever the rain blows this way.

Hallandale Beach is ready for the storm season ahead

HALLANDALE BEACH - The City of Hallandale Beach is facing the first tropical storm of the season. We are ready!

Our city is preparing and as part of that preparation, our first responders and leadership go through readiness drills. Nothing is left to guess.

With that said, Mother Nature is not predicable, so you must be ready. We will be there, but it is dependent on the conditions she presents; Wind rain and storm surge. Florida is not a stranger to these threats, so we all need to be ready.

Over the past few days, I have received questions about our flooding. The NE is ready! Our pumps are working and tested. I understand that many of our neighbors in the NE have had to deal with many losses. We have implemented modern infrastructure and unless Mother Nature is extreme, we will not experience the flooding we have seen in the past.

I have told many residents that my biggest fear is flooding. When I moved here 25 years ago, I never experienced the Florida rainy seasons.

I call the all-day rains “Florida Snow Storms.” The impact of raising water on our homes and threat to our safety is alarming. I am sure that my colleagues would agree other than traffic, flooding is one of our biggest concerns.

That is why over the past years, I have fought and worked to address it. I have gone to the county, state and federal government for help.

These efforts have resulted in the NE Drainage Project in partnership with FEMA. A $15-milliondollar project. This project not only encompasses the NE, but the SW as well.

The NE project has been completed and is successful. There were many lessons learned during the construction of this project. This type of construction is so invasive. The extensive digging of dirt and muck, street closures, noise, dust and everyday disruptions are immense. As the NE project was nearing completion, the City was designing the SW Phase II. We took a pause to ensure we did the best most efficient project with the least impacts. We

Our residents have paid taxes and expect to have this project done cost efficiently. It is our job as stewards of these dollars to make sure they are used most efficiently. “Because things never work out like you plan, this has been a struggle to raise a child, work two jobs and get an education,” she said. “I came out of high school with the intention of going right to college, but having a baby at 19 sent things spinning out of control.”

While getting an education was paramount, Ruiz never gave hope, and while things were very tough, trying to find the time to work, study and raise a child, she admits that this would never have been possible if hadn’t been for her family and close friends, who watched her son while she was at school and work.

The Class of 2016 may be in better position to land that job they had worked so hard to achieve. The hiring outlook for college graduates continues to improve as employers plan to hire 11 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2016.

The perception of the job market among employers is also climbing.

This year, 42 percent of employers that participated in the survey characterized the job market for the Class of 2016 graduates as very good or excellent. Just two

years ago, only 18 percent of responding employers had the same lofty view of the job market for the Class of 2014 graduates.

Humanities majors can make a solid living, especially when we compare mid-career salaries. If you start in business management and rise to C.E.O., you would obviously have the highest salary of all… but that’s another story you need to look into.

In terms of pure earning potential, engineering majors reign supreme.

That shouldn’t surprise anyone—our current economy has created a great need for skilled engineers and rewards them handsomely, especially petroleum engineering majors, who earn a median early career salary of $102,300 and a median mid-career salary of $176,300. To put things in perspective, compare those stats to other high earners on our list. Chemical engineering majors have an early career salary at $69,600, and actuarial mathematics majors have the second-highest mid-career salary at $119,600.

What does the job market look like for this class? Here are a few different positions that are among the best paying and certainly where many of the graduates will be headed: Petroleum Engineering Average Salary: $102,300 to $176,300 Petroleum engineers help locate natural reservoirs of petroleum deposits. They work with teams of specialists to develop more effective,

cost-efficient methods of petroleum recovery through the application of principles from chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and geology.

There are three types of petroleum engineers who differ only by the stage of the drilling process that they are involved in.

Reservoir engineers monitor the geological formation for the best strategic method of extraction.

Actuarial Mathematics Average Salary: $60,800 to $119,600 An actuary is a business professional who analyzes the financial consequences of risk.

Actuaries use mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to study uncertain future events, especially those of concern to insurance and pension programs.

Nuclear Engineering Average Salary: $67,000 to $118,000 Nuclear engineers research and develop the processes, instruments, and systems used to derive benefits from nuclear energy and radiation. Many of these engineers find industrial and medical uses for radioactive materials—for example, in equipment used in medical diagnosis and treatment.

Statistician - Average

Salary: $54,900 to $103,100 Statisticians use mathematical techniques to analyze and draw conclusions from large amounts of data. Some statisticians (such as those who work for the US census) develop methods to collect and tabulate the data that they need to work with.

Others use proprietary information (such as insurance claims) or work with data that’s been collected by third party sources.

Financial Accountant Average Salary: $51,400 to $85,300 An accountant’s primary goal is to maintain a company’s financial records. Due to the broad range of a business’s financial responsibilities, many companies hire several types of accountants. Two main types of accountants include financial and managerial accountants.

But the jobs require not only treating patients who are sick and injured, but also offering advice and emotional support to patients and their families, taking care of paperwork (lots and lots of paperwork), helping doctors diagnose patients and providing advice and follow-up care.

Hotel Management - Average Salary: $42,500 to $73,200 This is a wide open field. Hospitality managers run the day-to-day operations of a restaurant or hotel, including overseeing personnel, ensuring that the facilities are properly maintained, taking steps to ensure customer satisfaction and overseeing the upkeep of administrative and financial records.

The hiring outlook for college graduates continues to improve as employers plan to hire 11 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2016 for their

Fun to create dishes for the summer CAJUN CHICKEN RIGATONI 1 lb. rigatoni extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 c. diced onions 1 tbsp. Cajun spice mix 1 tbsp. paprika kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 c. white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc 1 c. low-sodium chicken stock 1/2 c. heavy cream 1 c. peas 2 c. shredded rotisserie chicken, skin removed 1 tbsp. unsalted butter 1/2 c. chopped parsley 1 c. shredded cheddar, plus more for serving Bring an 8-quart stock pot of water to a boil and generously season with salt. Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup pasta water and drain pasta.

Meanwhile in a skillet over medium, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil; cook garlic and onions, stirring with a wooden spoon until softened, 2

minutes. Season with Cajun spice, paprika, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Add white wine and stock, bring to a boil and simmer for 4 minutes. Add cream, peas, and chicken and simmer until chicken is warmed through, 2 minutes.

Just before serving, turn off heat and add pasta to sauce. Stir in butter, parsley, and cheddar cheese.

Slowly add reserved pasta water as needed if the sauce is too thick.

Serve in skillet or transfer to serving platter. Top with more grated cheese.

SPINACH AND WHITE BEAN SOUP extra-virgin olive oil 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 small onion, chopped 1 carrot, chopped kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 c. dry white wine 32 oz. low-sodium vegetable stock 1 15-oz. can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 1 c. sliced zucchini,

2 c. crushed tomatoes 2 tbsp. heavy cream 6 large zucchini, sliced into 1/8" rounds 1 1/2 lb. skinless salmon, cut into 1" strips Canola oil, for frying 1 egg 1 c. all-purpose flour 2 c. panko (Japanese bread crumbs) sea salt, such as Maldon 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley

SPINACH AND WHITE BEAN SOUP cut into half moons 2 c. peas 3 c. baby spinach, washed and dried 1 c. freshly grated Parmesan In a large pot heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat.

Cook garlic and onion, stirring with a wooden spoon, 2 minutes. Add carrots, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper; cook 2 minutes more. Add white wine and stock, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Mix in cannellini beans and zucchini; simmer until

vegetables are tender, 5 minutes.

Just before serving add peas, fresh spinach, and parmesan. Stir until warmed through and spinach is wilted.

Serve in soup bowls and top with black pepper.

SALMON FISH STICKS WITH ZUCCHINI CHIPS extra-virgin olive oil 1 c. sun-dried tomatoes, oil drained and chopped Garlic clove, minced kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line two sheet pans with parchment paper and insert wire racks. In a medium pot, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add sun-dried tomatoes and garlic; season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Cook until garlic is softened, 2 minutes. Add crushed tomatoes and heavy cream and heat through, 5 minutes.

Using immersion blender, pulse until sauce is smooth. Turn off heat and cover sauce to keep warm.

Using a mandoline, slice zucchini into thin

rounds approximately 1/8" thick. Spread zucchini into a even layer over the sheet pans. (If you do not have wire racks, place directly on parchment paper.)

Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast until golden brown, 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat cast iron skillet with 1" canola oil over medium-high heat.

Prepare breading station with three medium bowls: one bowl with panko, another with 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water, beaten, and the third with flour. Season fish with salt and pepper. Coat each piece of fish with flour and shake off excess, then dip in egg and coat in breadcrumbs. Fry fish in two batches until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Drain and transfer to a paper towel–lined plate. Season with salt immediately.

Serve fish sticks with zucchini chips and ramekin of sundried tomato sauce.

Garnish with sea salt and parsley.

Don't let fractures break you: Know your risks for osteoporosis and be proactive about your bone health (BPT) - In the U.S. alone, someone breaks a bone as a result of osteoporosis every 20 seconds.[1] Breaks that occur as a result of osteoporosis, a chronic disease caused by excessive bone density loss, often take more than just a cast to heal the bone.[2,3] These bone breaks, or fractures, may not just be the result of a fall or injury, but rather a symptom of a larger underlying issue.[2] Osteoporosis weakens bones over time, making them thinner, more brittle and more likely to break.[2] The disease affects more than 10 million Americans,[4] contributing to more than two million osteoporotic fractures every year.[5] Additionally, once an initial fracture due to osteoporosis has happened, the chances of another are much higher - twice as likely, in fact.[3] What's more, osteoporosis is often asymptomatic. It cannot be seen and may not be felt, and therefore often goes undetected until a bone breaks.[2,6] Fractures from osteoporosis can have a significant impact on a person's life," explains Susan Randall, RN, MSN, FNP-BC, Senior Director of Science and Education for the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). "The consequences of this type of fracture can be life-altering, making it difficult for these individuals to get around and do things on their own as they might have before a fracture."

Randall tells us that although there is no cure for osteoporosis, there are steps that can be taken to help slow its progress. Regular exercise and proper nutrition, including getting recommended daily amounts of calcium and vitamin D from food first and supplementing for shortfalls, can help slow the deterioration of bone.[7] Treatment plans may also include prescription medications that can help slow bone loss, build new bone, increase bone density and reduce fracture risk.[8] "Knowing your risk factors for fracture should be a priority for all of us as we age," Randall urges. "This is especially important for women, as they can lose up to 20 percent of their bone density in the five to seven years following menopause."

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver.

This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations.

He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Tips for caretakers to help their loved one get better nutrition (BPT) - When a patient is battling cancer, good nutrition is essential to maintain physical strength and help ensure a better response to treatment.

Foods high in protein are an important part of your loved one's balanced diet, and helping them eat well is a critical investment in their health and well-being.

That said, there may be obstacles to good nutrition during cancer treatment such as mouth pain, fatigue, taste sensitivities and nausea. If eating and drinking are painful or unpleasant, it's easy to see how maintaining good nutrition could be a challenge. This can lead to a chain reaction of complications and a longer recovery time.

"Most cancer patients are too tired to make a meal, or even shop for it. Yet the importance of good, consistent nutrition can't be overstated," said Dr. Bruce Moskowitz, physician and chairman of the Cancer Nutrition Consortium (CNC), a nutrition resource to help patients overcome the barriers to eating and get the nutrients they need, including proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

Below are four common barriers to good nutrition, why they happen and some solutions to keep in mind. Arming yourself with knowledge and preparation, while also maintaining a sense of normalcy around food, will allow you to be a huge source of support for your loved one, helping him or her stay on track.

1. FATIGUE Many cancer patients identified themselves as the main food preparer in their household, in a survey conducted by the CNC. On good days, your loved one may be in the kitchen, preparing and enjoying a tasty bean and vegetable soup from scratch. However, some days they might feel too tired to fix a meal. A lack of food can lead to even more fatigue, and that can trigger a downward spiral.

Keep a stock of nutrient- and protein-rich foods on hand for the too-tired days. Patients often experience a metallic taste, but sometimes, flavor components that are salty or bitter can intensify - unpleasantly so. Radiation can also damage saliva glands.

When foods taste bitter, metallic or too salty, try a sweeter approach and marinate meats in a sweet or sour sauce, fruit juice or a honey-lemon vinaigrette. If a food is too sweet, add salt or dilute it in water. Stimulate the taste buds and saliva glands with sour foods: avoid pickles, but try wholesome options such as Greek yogurt, kefir or tart cherries.

4. Nausea and vomiting Besides being a common side effect of chemotherapy and radiation, cancer patients are often plagued with a condition called anticipatory nausea. That is, certain settings or circumstances, such as entering a treatment room, can make your loved one feel ill. Be aware of triggers and respect them, taking advantage of nauseafree days.

Encourage fluid intake in between meals rather than with meals, to leave room in the stomach for food. A few hours before radiation or chemotherapy, prepare a light snack or meal to get nutrients and protein into the body. If the doctor prescribes an anti-nausea drug, keep close tabs on how well it's working, advocating for alternatives if needed.

Most patients describe numbness or pain in the calf, hip, thigh or buttock, but up to 40 percent of people who are diagnosed do not feel any symptoms.

Though often associated with older age groups, the NYU study found a distinction in younger age groups: The disease is actually more prevalent in younger women than younger men to a dramatic degree. Screening for peripheral artery disease can be as simple as comparing blood pressure in your ankle as your arm, known as an ankle brachial index.

OLDER MEN: CAROTID ARTERY STENOSIS A narrowing of the arteries that carries blood to the brain is known as carotid artery stenosis, usually caused by an increase of fatty deposits.

Most commonly, symptoms are not apparent until the patient has a stroke. The NYU study found a more pronounced and higher prevalence of this blockage in older men than in older women. If a patient does opt for screening, a non-invasive method is recommended, such as one offered by Life Line Screening, which uses ultrasound to visualize the arteries.

MEN AND WOMEN: ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSMS The aorta is a major blood supply line to your body, running from your heart to your abdomen. When an aneurysm occurs, an area in this vital artery become enlarged and could eventually grow and rupture. These rup-

tures are serious, as they are life threatening and difficult to operate on. Causes are not known, but researchers have found a correlation with tobacco use, a hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. Most people are unaware of having this condition, but a major symptom is a feeling of pulsation from the navel. According to the NYU study, prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms was similar across all age groups.

Annual screening can be done with a simple ultrasound.

DIABETES PATIENTS: PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE Patients with diabetes are often screened for heart disease, just because of the great risk factors present in these patients. But the NYU study results indicate that doctors might want to consider the onset of peripheral vascular disease in their diabetes patients as well. Patients with diabetes were at a very high risk of developing peripheral vascular disease in the lower extremities or the carotid artery - even if they were not diagnosed with heart disease, according to the study.

Future study is needed to see if screening could lead to better health for diabetes patients, says senior investigator Dr. Jeffrey S. Berger, an associate professor in the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone.

Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning.

I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

As we all know, our folks are very precious and we need to put them in the best hands possible. I highly recommend the team at Always Classic Care. They have been extremely accomodating and allow terrific flexibility in schedule as per mom’s changing needs.

They were even able to make arrangements for the aide mom loved to return to her after the three months we had mom in Ohio this past summer .

8 locals honored for making a difference in the community by Memorial/Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital HOLLYWOOD - Seven individuals and one organization were recently honored by the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations at the 18th annual Circle of Friends luncheon at the Diplomat Resort & Spa. Albert Jones, Stanley Marks, Greg Marsh, the Patient and Family Centered Advisory Councils, Dexter Sereda, and Peter Shulman were named “Spirit of Healing” award winners for professional excellence, community service, and a commitment to the Memorial Healthcare System. The contributions of Al and Jackie Fernandez were recognized with the “Wasie Philanthropic Leadership” award for fundraising generosity and guidance.

“Our award winners are difference makers in the community,” said Carl Schuster, board chair of the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. “They have consistently dedicated their efforts to making South Florida a better place.”

Albert Jones, a Dania Beach resident, has been involved in the Broward County community for nearly 50 years. He

has been an educator, school board member, elected official, and a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District. First appointed by then Governor Jeb Bush in 1999, Jones served as commissioner for 17 years, helping lead the Memorial Healthcare System during a time it grew to become one of the largest public healthcare systems (by revenue) in the country. Since his retirement from the board in December, Jones has served on the community relations committee of the Coalition for a Healthy South Broward.

Dr. Stanley Marks, of Cooper City, has been part of the Memorial Healthcare System for 37 years, initially as a staff physician and now as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. In his current role, he leads Memorial’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, which will provide important learning and training opportunities for new physicians. Having recently received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to accept residents for its physical medicine, re-

habilitation, and pediatric programs, Dr. Marks and his team are also pursuing accreditation in internal medicine, with OB/GYN, general surgery, and emergency medicine expected by 2020.

Weston resident Greg Marsh has chaired the Conine AllStar Golf Classic, and numerous other fundraisers for the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, for more than a decade. The event, which raises money for the Conine Clubhouse, generated nearly $300,000 earlier this year, with those funds helping underwrite expenses for families who stay for free while a child is hospitalized. Marsh has also been a driving force behind the success of the Jeff Conine Celebrity Poker Classic and Joe DiMaggio Casino Night, both of which have made it possible for more than 9,000 families to have a home away from home while a child is being treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

The Patient and Family Centered Advisory Councils (PFACs) have been largely responsible for changing the culture of the Memorial

Healthcare System from one that was system-centered to one that focused on people.

That began in 2001, under the direction of Nick Masi, with the formation of committees where parents and family members could advocate for the needs of the patient. Establishing the family as the focus of care, the advisory councils affirmed that medical interventions are done with them (not for them or to them) and acknowledged that a patients entire support system -family, friends, and community -- are all vital aspects of a successful recovery. The PFACs have become indispensable players in establishing and maintaining the culture and, with members serving on committees and task forces, have recommend changes in hospital policies, helped design new spaces within Memorial’s facilities, and proposed new programs, including the Family Resource Centers now located at every hospital.

Dr. Dexter Sereda’s career as a physician has shown that there are many ways to have impact in the medical field.

The resident of Hollywood was a surgeon for more than 28 years and has successfully transitioned to an administrative position as director of medical affairs at Memorial Hospital Pembroke, a role that has him as the liaison between the facility’s medical staff and administration. Previously the medical director of adult general surgery at Memorial Hospital West, Sereda is currently also pursuing an MBA degree in healthcare at Florida International University.

Peter Shulman, MD, has been helping children gain access to the healthcare they deserve for more than 40 years. After joining Pediatric Associates in 1975, Shulman was entrusted with developing their first satellite office in Plantation and today, as the medical group’s CEO, oversees more than 250 pediatricians, 35 locations, and more than one million annual office visits. A familiar face at Memorial Regional Hospital, the Fort Lauderdale resident also treated patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital after it opened in 1992.

Al and Jackie Fernandez, also from Fort Lauderdale, were the recipients of the Wasie Philanthropic Leadership Award for generosity in fundraising and guidance. Al has served on the board of the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations for many years and the couple is responsible for cofounding the Tour de Broward, an annual event that includes cycling, running and walking options for participants and raises money for programs and services at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. It generated more than $500,000 earlier this year and has now raised more than $2 million for local children’s healthcare in its seven-year history.

Attend the 2016 Annual Seniors Carnival Picnic at Ingalls Park, Friday, June 10, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is part of the exciting and active Hallandale Beach Human Services Department’s Hepburn Center Senior Program.

The Senior Center offers a variety of field trips and events, but the annual Carnival Picnic is designed to get the seniors out into the City’s parks for active living and a morning in the sun. The Hepburn Center Senior Services offers daily recreational and other activities for seniors, 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (except holidays) and includes a continental breakfast and healthy lunch. The center also includes a vibrant Seniors Chorus, which has performed at a variety of City events.

The Ingalls Park picnic will include plenty of food, music and games for the seniors.

The daily programs are free for seniors and the City provides transportation to and from the center for City residents in need of the service.

To join the City’s programs, or to see what senior services are offered, stop by Ingalls Park, 735 SW 1st St., on Friday morning, or stop by the Hepburn Center any day, 750 NW 8th Avenue. Seniors must register for the Seniors Programs to participate in events.

Strict enforcement of parking HBPD welcome Officer Diana Sempere regulations begins next week Hallandale Beach Police will begin strict enforcement of parking regulations during street cleaning operating next week. Violators are subject to tickets, and or being towed to

allow for street cleaning operations.

Hallandale Beach Police welcomed Officer Diana Sempere, right, to the force last week in swearing in ceremonies in Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy’s office. Officer Sempere, a former employee of the Miami Herald, will spend about four months with a training officer on the street.

The City currently has 94 sworn officers patrolling the City’s streets.
