Hard work and the belief that Jews from all over should come and celebrate the holiday together was the defining point that Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus (Chabad of South Broward) has organized, pushed and promoted this event throughout the years. Michelle Battles remembers it well. It changed her life forever. As a 9-year-old growing up in Indiana, Battles was like every other young girl who wanted to be a part of everything. She was a vibrant young lady who loved to be around her brother. It was at a baseball game, while waiting around for a ride home that something so innocent - and what every other youngster does at that age - that altered her path. When that rock hit, this healthy young lady was suddenly at a place where she had never been. No vision problems or glasses in her past, that rock scratched the inside of her eye and it was certainly a game changer. “Everything was blurry and I had trouble seeing,” she recalled. “That was really something that you are never prepared for. You are a kid and fear just about everything.” Because of that serious injury, growing up was very tough on Battles. She had trouble seeing - and over the years - it started getting worse. When she moved to south Florida six years ago, Battles could tell that her eyesight was declining. Blurred vision and that annoying glare from lights at night had made things very tough. By the time she had her baby in 2014, Battle’s sight had gotten so bad that she was not living her life to its fullest. She was blind in the left eye. It was also when she saw Dr. Stanley Braverman in Hallandale Beach. He told me that what I had was a traumatic cataract. “You could see on Dr. Braverman’s face that this condition was indeed very serious,” she recalled. “With a new baby and much of my life left to live, it was time to take care of this.” Battles who turned 32 this year, looks back at the decision and the way everything was explained. While she had plenty of reservations, which is natural for anyone facing eye surgery, it was something that had to be done. Traumatic cataract can present many medical and surgical challenges. A Department of Health Case Worker, who needed her sight to fully do her job, the Fort Lauderdale resident was now excited about finally regaining her eyesight. It was something that she had long struggled with. “I remember when I went to see Dr. Braverman and sitting in the waiting room, reading all the stories written on patients who have had life-changing procedures done,” Battles said. “Reading some of those stories made me feel more confident. It gave me more knowledge as to what I was facing, although it was different than the surgery I was going to have.” “Going over everything that he was going to do during my operation, Dr. Braverman and his staff really made me feel at ease,” Battles added. Battle’s life-altering experience came in March of this year, and within two weeks, she could see clearly for the first time in over 20 years. Some six months later, she is still singing the praises of the surgery and her eyesight. “I can see better than I ever remember,” Battles said with plenty of enthusiasm. “It took me a little over two weeks to fully recover, but this has been such a positive experience in my life - and I cannot thank Dr. Braverman enough for what he has done to elevate the way I live.” WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser assisted cataract surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more,

Annual South Florida Chanukah Festival was amazing once again at Gulfstream Park By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This past Monday’s Chanukah celebration was amazing! The weather held out and we all had a chance to share the holiday message of hope peace and love! I want to thank Rabbi Tennenhaus and the entire family of Chabbad of South Broward for organizing the largest televised South Florida festival. Special thanks go out to Gulfstream Park, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel and his team and especially our great men and women of the Hallandale Police Department under the leadership of Chief Dwayne Flournoy for making everyone feel safe and secure. It was an honor to be able to light the first candle alongside Executive Officer to the Sheriff, Russ DiPerna. The real buzz was about the amazing turn out in Paris yesterday when they all gathered around the menorah at the base of the Eiffel Tower. The message of the holiday and their example of solidarity should resonate around the world! Chanukah is about how one light can eliminate darkness. Just think, if we all join in standing up against hate around the world. On Monday, we also dedicated our
City Hall Menorah with a group of students from the Chabbad Nursery School and the Women’s Seminary. While this past weekend, the City’s holiday lighting ceremony was canceled, this Friday we will be kicking off Christmas with a special lighting up the boulevard. The celebration will begin at 6 PM. Special thanks to the Hallandale Shopping Center for opening up their center to all of us to enjoy the evening. This past weekend rain held out for two other events that were for a good holiday cause. The “Toy Run” for Toys for Tots started from Diplomat Golf Course and Spa with over 350 plus exotic cars that traveled to the Good Year Blimp station in Pompano. This year, I had a chance to join the group in celebration of their 10th Anniversary. Special thanks to Fred Burton and his team that has organized this event to help the Marine Corp supply funds and toys to needy children. Also the 28th “Toys in the Sun Run” that starts right here in Hallandale Beach from Mardi Gras was held Sunday. Special thanks to Dan Atkins and his team for hosting the event. Also special
thanks to Hallandale Beach Police Department for providing security. The sun did come out, but I heard it was a bit muddy at Marcum Park. Thousands of motorcyclists joined in to donate over 50,000 toys! Thank you to my friend and one of the organizers for years, Jack Schifrel for all of his hard work coordinating permits. Great job! With all of the holiday events taking place, the city keeps on moving forward. Over the past year, we have been implicating our
new computer system. Within the system, there are various programs that are housed in the “cloud.” The financial platform is the most important. That went live two months ago with “OpenGov.” All of our budget information is fully accessible and interactive to our residents. Last month, the city went live with our online permitting. The transition to this platform did not go smoothly. With every new program roll out, there will be glitches and a learning curve.
This particular program relies on e-mail correspondences to communicate between the applicant, the city and the cloud. The volume of requests and issues between the program and the links overloaded the system and did not work. When it did work, it was extremely slow. Many permits were delayed and applicants could not access them on-line. The phones were ringing off the hook and it was a mess. The timing could not have been worse. This time of year is when permit applications peak. Everyone is back from up north and wanting to fix up their places. As a city with the recession behind us, we are also seeing many businesses wanting to upgrade and invest in their buildings. As of Monday, a patch was made by the vendor and staff is getting caught up on the back log. We are not 100% out of the woods, but we are getting there. The need system allows property owners to set up an account to access permits on-line. This means they can check in real time the status of approvals and comments. The next phase will be to have all plans on-line. This week, we went
live on the new on-line utility billing system. You can now access your account on-line and pay for your bills on-line. Customers are not required to pay online but, we are offering to return customer deposits if they sign up on automatic pay. You can access your account information and confirmed payment. Once we move to smart meters, you will be able to see your water usage. Happy Chanukah!!! It is the season, so we all know that that means traffic. Please plan ahead and try to avoid rush hour! Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Installed at Hollywood City Hall Circle
HOLLYWOOD - Motorists now have the ability to charge their electric vehicle while conducting business at Hollywood City Hall or while visiting the Broward Library Holly-
wood Branch. The City of Hollywood recently installed a BLINK™ Level 2 electric car charging station and designated two parking spots in the northwest parking lot of City Hall
Circle at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard. Drivers can pull up, plug in and charge their electric vehicle (EV) courtesy of the City. Users can download the BLINK™ app to monitor when the unit is available as well as their vehicle’s charging status. Any EV sold in North America can be charged at the BLINK™ station, including Teslas with an adapter. While most EV batteries receive a full charge in 4-6 hours, the four hour charge limit should be adequate to top the vehicle off. An additional station is scheduled to be added at City Hall Circle in the near future. Charging stations are also available at the following City owned parking
garages, available 24 hours / 7 days a week for $0.39 per KWh(kilowatt hour): • Van Buren Garage 251 S 20th Ave • Radius Garage - 250 N 19th Ave • Garfield Garage- 300 Connecticut St The additional station at City Hall Circle is an effort to improve the charging infrastructure in Hollywood as a way to encourage EV ownership. between charges. A full charge will cover roughly 95% of commuter’s daily miles; still, “range anxiety” remains a barrier to EV adoption. With a wider, more visible charging infrastructure, the hope

On Monday night, as the nation paid their respects to those who sacrificed so much in Pearl Harbor, we were also reminded that this celebration at Gulfstream Park fell under the category of the times we are living in. With Florida Lt. Governor Carlos LopezCantera, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper and many others on hand for this festive event, the extra law enforcement was well in place - in every corner of this grand facility. With San Bernardino fresh in our minds, and the constant threats being made by terror groups around the world - 2015 has become a time to be happy, but be very cautious. “The times we are living in,” Arum Miller said. “Growing up in Israel, this is the norm. This is the way generations have been brought up.” On a night of celebration - that came with such great meaning of this holiday - hate had moved in once again as the world has watched in amazement at Paris, San Bernardino and other daily bombings and senseless acts of violence that have become a reality. On this evening - as those thoughts are fresh in our minds - it was time to try and escape and celebrate. Families poured in to listen to icons such as Avraham Fried and David Gobay. Great food, the lighting of the menorah on the second night of the holiday and plenty of games for the youngsters to play. Leah Goldman and her four children came with friends from Hollywood. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, RN Health and Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach. “The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.” Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. From 20s to 50s: How to age gracefully (BPT) - When you're constantly bombarded with messages and news about the latest anti-aging treatments and methods, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. How can you maintain a skincare routine when the rules seem to be ever-changing? It might be simpler than you think. By separating the hype from reality, you can come up with a core skincare routine to perfectly suit the skin you're in. "As you age, your skin changes," says Dr. Jeanine Downie, board-certified dermatologist from Image Dermatology P.C. in Montclair New Jersey. "When it comes to supporting skin and its care, women (and men) need to understand that aging is complex, and it varies greatly by individual. Genetics, tanning and smoking also influence the health of your skin." She also noted that with skincare, there are a range of choices to consider, such as topicals, injectables, cosmetic treatments, surgery and even oral antiaging skincare supplements. Additionally, Dr. Downie shares it's important to adjust your skin care routine throughout the years, what worked in your twenties may not have your skin glowing into your thirties and beyond. Many women don't know where to start. Meaning, what types of anti-aging skincare products might be right for them and what the choices are when it comes to antiaging products. She provides her tips for aging beautifully from your 20s to 50s and each decade in between: 20s: Preserve and protect. It's never too early to start aging prevention. Hectic schedules, late nights out and days spent on the beach can wreak havoc on your skin. This stress shows up in the form of dark circles, under-eye bags, and dull or puffy skin. Fine lines begin to creep up as early as your late 20s, so a quality skin care routine is key. Start with a glycolic acid based cleanser and an oil free moisturizer. Dr. Downie recommends a separate sunscreen with an SPF 30 or above, rain or shine, January through December, regardless of your ethnicity. Sunscreen only works if you reapply it every two hours, according to skincancer.org. Sun protection forms the foundation of any antiaging skin-care plan, according to the American Academy of Dermatology and The Skin Cancer Foundation, as the sun's rays make our skin age more quickly - so regular use of daily sun protection is essential at all ages. 30s: Exfoliate. Once you hit your 30s, your skin's natural exfoliation process begins to
slow down. The growth factor in your skin also decreases. This means that you start to lose a teaspoon of collagen from your face every year by the time you are 30. Continue with your glycolic acid base cleanser. You also need an oil-free make up remover. Using an eye cream both day and night might help to increase moisture and suppleness around the eye area. Well, it happened again. The family of a former patient of our agency called with a horror story of how the patient was taken advantage of by an aide that the client hired privately. Mrs. R. had been our patient throughout the three years that her long term care insurance paid for aide services, and she was very happy with the aides we had assigned to her. However, once she was faced with paying for the aide outof-pocket, her friends convinced her that she could pay less money for help that she could hire herself, rather than work through an agency. At first, Mrs. R was very happy. The aide she hired was kind and attentive. She helped shower and dress Mrs R, helping pick out her clothes, accessories, even her jewelry. The aide liked to listen to Mrs. R’s stories about her trips and the lovely momentos she bought back. Mrs. R also liked to talk about her designer clothes and how much she spent on her wardrobe. The aide drove Mrs R around in her late husband’s Lexus, taking her shopping, to her doctors, and to the beauty salon. And when they returned home and Mrs. R reclined in her lounge chair for a little nap, the aide prepared dinner and straightened up the house. Mrs. R told her daughter that she was very happy with this aide. Then, all of a sudden, small items began to disappear. The daughter flew down, helped her mom look for everything and questioned the aide. The aide said she was insulted, and quit. The family could not accuse her without proof, but felt that was a lesson well learned. That’s when the daughter called us. Eating healthy this holiday season - and beyond SPICY PUMPKIN HUMMUS 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed well 1 garlic clove, minced 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup water 3 tablespoons tahini 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (you can use canned or make your own) 1 teaspoon cumin 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil Cooking Directions
Place chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, water and tahini in food processor. Pulse until smooth. Add pumpkin and seasonings. Pulse to combine. With the food processor running, drizzle in olive oil until blended. Taste and add more lemon juice or cayenne pepper if needed.
LENTIL SALAD WITH LEMON-ROSEMARY VINAIGRETTE
For the vinaigrette Juice of 2 lemons (about 1/4 cup) 1 tbsp fresh minced
rosemary Fine sea salt 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil For the lentils 3 cups coarsely chopped carrots 2 shallots, cut lengthwise into thin wedges 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 cups small brown lentils, or French green Puy lentils 1 bay leaf 1 clove garlic, crushed flat but left whole
1. To make the vinaigrette, in a bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, rosemary, and 1 teaspoon salt. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil, whisking constantly until emulsified. Let stand at room temperature while you make the salad. 2. Preheat the oven to 425F degrees. Add the carrots and shallots to a baking dish and drizzle with the olive oil, and toss to coat. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and a grinding of pepper. Spread out into a single layer. 3. Roast until browned in spots and tender but
not mushy, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and tent loosely with aluminum foil to keep warm. 4. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine the lentils, bay leaf, garlic, and 4 cups of water and bring to a boil over a medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook at a gentle simmer until the lentils are almost tender, but still slightly undercooked, 12-15 minutes. Stir in 3/4 teaspoon salt, recover and cook until the lentils are tender but still hold their shape, about 10 minutes longer. Drain the lentils in a colander placed in the sink. Discard the bay leaf and the garlic.
5. Transfer lentils to a large salad bowl and add the carrots and shallots. Pour the vinaigrette over the salad and toss gently to combine. Serve warm.
POLENTA WITH SAVORY TOMATO CHICKPEA SAUCE 1 cup polenta 3 cups water (adjust according to directions on polenta package) 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (for polenta) 1 pinch fine sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (for sauce, and for topping) 2 onions, one diced and one very thinly sliced 1 celery rib, sliced 4 tomatoes, diced
1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 tablespoon mixed Italian herbs such as basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, tarragon and sage 1 onion, very thinly sliced
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large pot, heat the water to a high simmer. Slowly add in the polenta, stirring constantly until it thickens. Add in the olive oil, salt and pepper to taste, and stir to combine. Pour the polenta into a greased loaf pan and place it in the oven to bake for 2025 minutes or until cooked through.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until it is translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the celery and cook another 3 or 4 minutes. Add in the tomatoes and tomato paste, reduce the heat to low, and allow the mixture to simmer until the tomatoes are cooked through. Add the chickpeas and cook the mixture until the chickpeas are heated through. In a small skillet, heat the last tablespoon of olive oil over mediumhigh heat. Add the onions and sautee them until they are golden brown. Remove them, and add the zucchini to the skillet. Allow them to crisp up on one side, then turn them and crisp them on the other side. Mix them with the onions and set aside. Add herbs to the simmering tomato-chickpea sauce, and add salt and pepper to taste. Slice the polenta and plate it. Spoon the sauce over the polenta, and top with the crispy onion and zucchini mixture. Serve and enjoy!

Celebrate the holiday season this Friday night Hallandale Beach will celebrate the holiday season at 6 p.m. Friday night, Dec. 11, with the annual Holiday Lighting Celebration at 1750 E. Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Inclement weather last Friday pushed the event back one week. The annual event includes the official lighting ceremony for the median, community performances, games, amusement rides and a visit from Santa Claus. The event is free, however, there is a five dollar charge for a wrist band for the amusement rides. Also, food will be available for sale. For more information, call 954-457-1452.
