Gulfstream Park is still a destination Another season begins this Saturday and offers much more than thoroughbred racing who were making the facilities more than a trip to the track to bet some races. What happened, especially with Gulfstream Park and Casino, is money was starting to be spent and ideas began to flow. The long-awaited multi-use facility started to take shape - and through plenty of trial an error - things began to take shape.
By Larry Blustein firstname.lastname@example.org Since Gulfstream Park changed the winter dates into December a few years back, things really started to get interesting. For decades, the first week of January was the offi-
cial opening for the Hallandale Beach landmark. But like so many other things in south Florida, tourists started to arrive earlier - and the landscape of thoroughbred racing started to change - for the better. As interest in the “Sport of Kings” started to decline, many tracks needed to get a boost from developers
With Gulfstream Park opening its winter racing schedule this Saturday, Dec. 3, it truly promises to be one of the best meets the facility has ever had. In addition to several stakes races that are held in high regard in the racing community, and the prestigious Florida Derby, things will be very interesting this racing season - with more things going than ever before. Mike Reed has been coming down to south Florida for 23 years from his home in upstate New York.

‘New’ commission gets things started in Hallandale Beach
It’s hard to believe that it’s December already as the seasonal visitors are returning to a little slice of heaven. It’s that time of year where everyone is looking for great places to
eat - and if you love great food - as most people do - there is a hidden gem that many are starting to find out about. Just a block east of the Mardi Gras Racing and Casino, and a num-
ber of dynamic new projects, is El Tamarindo Coal Fired Pizza. Easily one of south Florida’s best destinations that offer everything from great foods to outstanding atmosphere and everything in between. While it survives on locals who want a quality meal at very affordable prices, this is also a destination that is not afraid to take chances in the kitchen. This unique combination of authentic Italian Cuisine & Latin Flavors is on display from its signature Mariscada Soup to Pasta Alfredo with Shrimp, Chicken Parmigiana and so many others that make dinner a true culinary experience. Hallandale Beach resident Grace Turner has made El Tamarindo Coal Fired Pizza a destination two to three times a week for the past three years. Because she works a lot, and often
In what was one of the most publicized local elections in recent history, and after the dust had settled, the voters in Hallandale Beach made their choice, speaking out - and on Monday - elected and re-elected City Commissioners took the oath of office and reorganized the dais for the next two years. With longtime Vice Mayor Bill Julian beaten out in the recent election, the face of this commission will certainly change - with different viewpoints that have been the trademark of this tremendous city over the years. With so many tremendous landmarks, Hallandale Beach has become a destination. One that houses such impressive and well-known facilities - such as Gulfstream Park and Mardi Gras Casino. Hallandale Beach has always been a gateway for visitors around the world

to come and take advantage of the weather and so much that all of south Florida has to offer. It has also been a great place to live, with so many quality projects, enhancing the residents. The New Hepburn Center and O.B. Johnson Park have put this City in a spotlight that it has never been before. The new commission includes, from left, City Commissioner Michele Lazarow, City Commissioner Anabelle Taub, Vice Mayor Keith London, Mayor Joy Cooper, and City Commissioner Anthony Sanders. Nobody has watched the change more than this avid racing fan, who now brings his family with him for a monthlong visit. “Since my heavy work season is during the summer back home, I get the chance to come here and spend a month,” Reed said. “I am a huge racing fan, but my wife never wanted to come - because I spend all of my time doing what I love.” Because many of the shops and restaurants and other entertainment options - as well as the casinos have now offered a major destination, Reed and others are taking full advantage of a Gulfstream property that is pretty much has a reputation around the world. At a time when having many choices at one location is the way that many businesses are headed, Gulfstream and the Stronarch Group have been at the cutting edge for years. Since 1939, Gulfstream Park has been one of the most important venues for horse racing in the country. Some of the world’s top thoroughbred contenders pass through Gulfstream Park with their eye on Triple Crown glory.

There is so much that makes Hallandale Beach a great place to live, visit and to work in By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - I hope all of our readers had a great holiday weekend. It is wonderful to see many of our part-time residents arriving from up north. I know many people look at the season and only think traffic. In life, there is always some good and bad mixed. The super majority of residents know that the season marked the beginning of the prime race season and the beginning of our seasonal economy. Many of our local businesses depend on the influx of our snowbirds to come and enjoy our beaches, stores and restaurants. My family and I have lived in Hallandale full time for 26 years and before that owned property for over 32. I, like many residents will tell you that we have always had traffic. I remember the Diplomat Mall and even the original Diplomat Hotel. I am sure many also remember “Schmatta Row” where the real deals were found. It is funny how often while there will always be change, some things remain the same. I had a wonderful chance over the election to speak with Peter Bluesten’s daughter, Norma, who lives in Hollywood. She talked about the history of her family, our city and the “The Digest.” Her father started the paper. It was a sad day when money mismanagement and theft ruined the paper. It was amazing that a couple of employees pulled together and started a new paper. They became the South Florida Sun Times. I reassured her that even though Peter Bluesten Park will be receiving a much-needed expansion and make over history and the name will be preserved. It is also great to still have a local newspaper, which continues to keep all of our residents informed on events and the newsmakers within our tremendous community. Larry Blustein, Peter’s nephew, remains as a lead
columnist and editor. Larry is also an icon and has created his own history and legacy. Reporting both in print, on radio and on TV he has continued to cover high school sports. Larry is very low key and does not take to the spotlight. Ask anyone within our community who has worked with Larry over the years and all will tell you what a huge asset he is to Hallandale Beach. He is easily one of the fairest media people we have - always promoting and applauding our residents and commission. When Arnold Lanner was Mayor of the City, it was Larry who made sure that the name of City Park was changed to reflect what his uncle did in the over the 40 years that he and his family lived and worked in this community. In all of the years that I have known Larry, I really never knew the great things that he had accomplished - here and across south Florida. I had a chance to get to know more about him recently and his other passions. He was just inducted into Broward County Sports Hall of Fame for his commitment to covering high school sports. He has personally played a large part in making sure that over 10,000 students received college scholarships - many Hallandale High students are in that group. A few weeks ago, he was recognized by our City with his very own day. Something that everyone on our commission recognized and applauded. It did not take to long for my predictions after the elections to regretfully ring true. Which meant a bitter holiday for two of our fine professional staff, City Manager Rosemond and City Attorney Lynn Whitefield. Seconds after the installation of a new commission, Vice Mayor Keith London was appointed and then protocols for special meetings were cast away. It did not take long, but seconds after the swearing another special meeting was scheduled to discuss

the City Manager and City Attorney’s contracts. Not only was it scheduled with less than 12 hours’ notice. Not illegal, but certainly not in the best interest of public involvement. While it is obvious two commissioners attained their third vote to fire and make sweeping changes, the question arises for what end? For power or for the people? Being on the commission and having experience with over 5 City Manager separations. The majority on good terms and all equitable. I understand the issues clearly on litigation between employees. Litigation as most business minded people know is the worst position. In most cases, the attorneys are the winners and in the City’s case, any costs and settlements will cost our taxpayers. I had asked that the commission at best reconsider taking immediate action. They did not take my advice and I guess at the possible peril of the themselves and the City. The City Attorney and the City Manager do serve at the pleasure of majority vote of the commission. They have contracts. These contracts are established for both the protection of the employees and employer. In the past, typically these agreements are honored since there needs to be legally sufficient proof “for cause.” Grandstanding and intimidation are not the way to save the City money. In my observations during these employee’s tenures, I have yet to see a finding “for cause.” This is the other reason for a contract. As professionals, they can be fired due to politics, not performance. I will continue to keep all of our readers updated! Please remember to shop local!! As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions/concerns and ideas at my office: (954) 4571318. On my cell/text at: (954) 632-5700. Or e-mail me at: email@example.com.

These helpful nutrients can be found in fruits and veggies, like sweet potatoes carrots, whole and grains and lean meats or fish, so don't be afraid to add more of these foods to your diet when you don't feel well.

(BPT) - From obligations at work to errands and chores and making time for family and friends - your plate is fuller than ever and, unfortunately, getting sick can throw a major wrench into your marathon of activities and greatly hamper your productivity. That's why you need to do everything you can to start feeling better faster so you don't fall too far behind. Take these five steps to help you get back to conquering your full to-do list in no time. • Get plenty of sleep. With all of the hustle and bustle of your day, taking the time for sleep may seem impossible, but an established sleep schedule is one of the most important things you can do to support your health. Getting eight hours of sleep is always optimal especially when sick; however sickness can often disrupt our sleep. To help combat symptoms like sinus pressure or a stuffed nose from keeping you up, you can make easy
changes like propping yourself up in bed and moisturizing the air with a humidifier or vaporizer. You may find you breathe - and sleep easier. • Combat your worst symptoms. • Drink up. Water, broth or herbal tea - the more hydrated you stay, the better. Fluids not only soothe your throat, but they also ward off dehydration, thin your mucus and help your body systems function adequately - which, in turn, helps your immune system function at its best. With that said, not all drinks are created equal; stay away from caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. These beverages will actually increase dehydration, not relieve it. Hollywood’s 61st Annual Candy Cane Parade to Light Up the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, Saturday, December 3, 7 p.m.
Hollywood - Now in its 61st year, the Candy Cane Parade returns to the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk this Saturday, December 3 at 7 p.m. to delight thousands of spectators of all ages and usher in the holiday season in Hollywood! The Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach is one of the longest running holiday parades in the country. It was started back in the
mid-1950’s by a group of Hollywood merchants as a way to draw patrons to their shops and businesses. Today it features imaginative lighted floats and vehicles, marching bands and dance troupes with parade participants tossing out candy canes and mints all along the parade route. This year’s parade theme is “Musical Notes and Peppermint Floats.”
The parade gets underway rain or shine at 7:00 p.m. on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk at Scott Street and heads south to Harrison Street. Complimentary bleacher seating is available along the parade route from Garfield Street to Polk Street. Parade emcees will be stationed at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and at the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson
Street. To ease traffic, parade-goers are encouraged to park in one of the parking downtown garages and take the free parade shuttles to and from the beach from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The downtown parking garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Standard parking rates apply. The Candy Cane
Parade is presented in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency.

Local Hollywood Teams Support the Humane Society of Broward County Walk for the Animals Fort Lauderdale – The Humane Society of Broward County’s largest fundraiser is the Walk for the Animals which will be held on March 18, 2017 at Huizenga Plaza in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The event netted over $525,000 in 2016 and the center hopes to raise even more in 2017. People are encouraged to set up fundraising pages and collect donations from friends and family. Others like to form “Packs” or teams and they get very creative in raising funds. One such team is the Puppy Peddlers, which are a group of volunteers who work in the shelter’s Pet Boutique and their friends. The team captain is Hollywood resident Cherie Wachter, VP of Marketing at the shelter and who oversees the volunteer sales associates.
Last year this dedicated group raised over $36,282.00 for the shelter and took home a trophy for third place Pack fundraiser. For the 2017 Walk, the team is selling chances for the opportunity to win an estate stamped silkscreen print by the Louisiana artist George Rodrigue. The print entitled “Three Amigos” features the infamous Blue Dog with another cat and dog and measures
22” x 28”. Chances are $10.00 each; 6 for $50.00; 13 for $100.00 and can be purchased by visiting the Humane Society of Broward County’s Pet Boutique located at 2070 Griffin Road; Hair Industry at 2000 Harrison Street; the Pet Doctor of Davie located at 5183 S. University Drive; Yachtronics 626 SW 4th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, or call Cherie at 954-266-6831. Another team with a
Hollywood connection is the Beachside Montessori Village - BMV Lions. Beachside Montessori Village students have participated in the walk for several years and their goal is to raise $5,000 in 2017. Pack leader Manon Boulanger Wiese and her son Roscoe, a 6th grader at BMV, have some great things planned for the students to get involved. Fundraisers include a Polar Express movie night
at the school, paper bone sales, and a family fun night at the Melting Pot in Cooper City. For more information about the Walk, please visit www.walk4thanimals.com . You can set up your own fundraising page, form your own team or support one of these Hollywood residents and their efforts. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization sup-
ported by donations from companies and people who want to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. The shelter has only one location at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale and is not affiliated with any national or local organization with a similar name. To see animals up for adoption or find out about other upcoming events visit our website at www.humanebroward.com.

Acqua Bistro making a splash on Hollywood Beach
The Perrone family is back with a quaint and delicious eatery right on the ocean By Stephen P. Cummings Stephencummings@att.net Hollywood Beach - If you live in south Florida, you know that the Perrone family name is synonymous with delectable Italian cuisine. Served for the past 50 years. Peter Perrone is the proud owner of his family’s sixth restaurant named Acqua Bistro, which recently opened in the Aquarius building in Hollywood Beach. Peter is a veteran of the restaurant business as his father Domenico purchased the landmark Doria’s Italian Restaurant in Hallandale Beach in 1970, pleasing many hungry patrons for 18 years before it was demolished in 1988 when Federal Highway was expanded. The Perrones opened their second restaurant named in 1979, Pier Five, one block from Doria’s, and constructed the very elegant Villa Perrone in 1988 that was packed with loyal customers on East Hallandale Beach Blvd until it closed in 2002. Peter learned his craft from two highly talented restauranteurs, his Uncle Frank and father Domenico, mastering the art of cooking, expediting and managing bringing his skills to the family’s fourth restaurant named Perrones that was located in Coral Springs on Sample Road. After three years of a long commute from his residence in Hollywood, Perrone’s Cucina Italiana opened in downtown Hollywood with live entertainment and a full bar. preparing their sig-

You Can See The Difference In Acqua Bistro Acqua Bistro is the quaintest of their eateries, with a seating capacity of 55 inside and tables accommodating 10 outside, facing the ocean and the pool. The restaurant welcomes your business Tuesday through Sunday for both lunch and dinner with specially priced meals between 4:30 -6:30 off their Sunset menu. Valet Parking is cheerfully validated inside the restaurant and a private adjacent room is available for parties up to seventy guests. Best of all, Peter is happy to cater your private party or office luncheon with trays of your favorite pasta,
chicken or veal dishes. The Food Is Well Worth The Drive When it comes to delicious food, Acqua Bistro has an array of veal, chicken, pasta and seafood specials that the wait staff will be happy to share with you. Liquor is not served, but the restaurant offers a full compliment of beer, wine and soft drinks. Relaxing Atmosphere Throughout The Day While the great Italian cuisine is something that continues to bring in the customers, the relaxing dress code is casual and there are some tremendous lunch choices such as a hamburger or chicken wings - or a choice of salads. Lunch also gives diners an opportunity to sample mouth-watering spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna or a chicken
parmigiana sandwich served between 11 am and 3pm. Sunset Specials Complete Meals There are so many who like to eat their meals earlier in the evening, and Acqua Bistro realizes that. The Sunset Dinner is served between between 4:30 and 6:30 pm, with a meal that includes a choice of soup or salad finishing with coffee or tea and a scrumptious dessert like Italian cheesecake, tiramisu or a cannoli. Also, you can choose from a menu offering several favorite selections such as Chicken, Eggplant or Shrimp Parmigiana - or Tilapia, Grilled Salmon or New York Strip Steak served with pasta, a potato or vegetables. A great deal.
Dinner Is Served The traditional dinner fare is available until 9:30 pm, where the more expansive choices include Chicken Scarpariello , tastefully cooked with sausage, onions, mushrooms, pepperoncini, garlic, deglazed with wine and vinegar or their delicious Veal Saltimbocca topped with prosciutto, mozzarella, demi-glace over spinach. Seafood connoisseurs may opt for Il Pescatore - filled with fresh clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, calamari sautéed with garlic, extra virgin olive oil and
a touch of marinara sauce served over linguini. Pasta dishes include Penne Vodka blended in a creamy pink sauce with minced prosciutto and onions and Pasta Bolognese (meat sauce) or Fettucini Alfredo. Don’t forget to sample an antipasto or specialty salad before your entrée. Acqua Bistro will be serving dinner on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, so call the restaurant at: 954-589-1796 for reservations. The Perrone family is back in town, so come enjoy a memorable meal. Buon Appetito.

J.R. Dunn’s Diamond in the Ruff - A Sparkling Success
Fort Lauderdale – In October of 2015 J.R. Dunn jewelers kicked off a year-long promotion entitled “Diamond in the Ruff” with the Humane of Broward Society County. As longtime supporters of the shelter, the Dunn Family wanted to create true love - by sponsoring pet adoptions so that more dogs and cats could find happy homes. Each week a pet in need was featured on both the J.R.Dunn and HSBC facebook pages. Through sharing and promoting 50 pets were placed! As a result of the huge success, the Dunn family has decided to continue the program for another year! According to Sean Dunn, “we are absolutely thrilled with the results from this unique program, and to know that
we helped so many animals find their forever families is truly heartwarming. We would encourage other businesses to get involved with a charity that is important to them or even become a sponsor for animals in need. Working with the team at the Humane Society of Broward County has been wonderful and we look forward to helping more pets in need.” The program has already kicked off and will again feature 52 pets over the next 12 months. J.R. Dunn will underwrite the entire adoption fee for that dog, puppy, cat or kitten. Diamond in the Ruff will be promoted through J.R. Dunn’s local radio spots and social media, and the HSBC will do its share of promotion as well.
What a fabulous way to put their money where their heart is, and to bring attention to all the amazing dogs and cats that are so ready to be loved. Furry little diamonds in the rough – just waiting for their “perfect setting!” Be sure to visit J.R. Dunn’s facebook page each week at www.facebook.com/JRDunnJewelers to see who the featured pet is and you might just find your next family member. Of course to meet the pet, contact the Humane Society of Broward County at 954-989-3977 ext. 6. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from people and companies that want to make a difference for the animals in our commu-
nity. The shelter is not affiliated with any local or national organization with a similar name and has only one location on Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale. Breaking tradition from the same, old omelettes How about a unique Asian, Kielbassa or German With Bacon eggs, one at a time. Add the milk and whisk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper and a little nutmeg. Add the crumbled bacon and chopped chives and mix well. Over medium heat, melt 1 Tablespoon of butter in a non-stick frying pan. Pour in 1/2 of the egg mixture. When slightly browned on the bottom, flip the omelette and brown the other side. (You may want to slide the omelet onto a plate and invert it back into the pan if it feels like a spatula will tear the omelette.) Slide the cooked omelet onto a plate and make a second omelette with the remaining egg mixture. Roll each omelette into a cigar shape. If hot to the touch, use a paper towel to help with rolling. If desired, slice the omelettes into sections. Serve warm. As the holidays get closer, and you think about what to serve your family and friends for breakfast, we have come up with a few omelettes that are different - not your standard meat and cheese. Try a few of these different breakfast treats to serve and see what they say. Asian Omelette • 6 large eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil • 1 cup brown or white rice • 1 Tablespoon carrot - finely chopped • 1 Tablespoon green bell pepper - finely chopped • 1 Tablespoon red bell pepper - finely chopped • 1 Tablespoon green onion - finely chopped • 1 Tablespoon mushrooms - finely chopped • 1 Garlic clove - finely chopped • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce Beat eggs, milk and pepper slightly; set aside. Heat oil in 8-inch nonstick skillet or omelet pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook remaining ingredients except soy sauce in oil, stirring frequently, until vegetables are crisp-tender. Stir in soy sauce. Remove mixture from
skillet; keep warm. Spray same skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat. Quickly pour about 1/2 cup of the egg mixture into skillet. Slide skillet back and forth rapidly over heat and, at the same time, quickly stir with a fork to spread eggs continuously over bottom of skillet as they thicken. Let stand over heat a few seconds to lightly brown bottom of omelet. (Do not overcook omelet will continue to cook after folding.) Spoon about 1/4 cup of the rice mixture on one side of omelet. Run spatula under unfilled side of omelet; lift over rice mixture. Tilting skillet slightly, turn omelet onto plate. Repeat with remaining egg and rice mixtures. German Omelette With Bacon • 4 slices of bacon - cooked crisp and crumbled • 1 or 2 teaspoons finely chopped chives • 2 Tablespoons flour • 3 large eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 1/4 teaspoon salt • A generous dash of grated nutmeg • black pepper - to taste • 2 Tablespoons butter - for frying Put the flour in a medium mixing bowl. Stir in the
Kielbasa Queen Omelette • 1/2 pound Kielbasa - sliced into thin rounds • 1 small or medium onion - diced • 1/2 red Italian pepper - diced • 4 white mushrooms - diced • 1 cup Fontina Cheese - shredded • 1 cup sharp Cheddar - shredded • 12 large eggs - beaten • unsalted butter - for frying Melt about 1/2 Tablespoon butter over medium heat. Get pan good and hot - fry kielbasa about 2-3 minutes per side or just until nicely browned and edges are beginning to crisp. Remove kielbasa from pan, add 2 tbsp. butter and saute pepper, onion and mushrooms until soft and onions are translucent. Remove from pan. Give pan a quick wipe and add 1 Tablespoon butter. Pour 1/4 of eggs (about 3 eggs per omelette) into pan (again, nice hot pan) and cook first side to your liking. Flip omelette and on one half layer 1/4 of the kielbasa, 1/2 cup mixed cheeses and 1/4 of the veggie saute. Close omelette. Let cook 1 minute more. Repeat with remaining eggs etc. Makes 4 awesome omelettes. If desired, garnish omelette with raw peppers - diced small and a sprinkle of melted cheese.

Ask Dr. Ron: ‘Are You in Love - or in Need?’ With close to 50% of all marriages ending in divorce, it certainly appears our culture has a problem sustaining relationships. Many people base their relationships on dysfunctional motives, and I usually find it helpful to examine relationships from the perspective of what I call the “Great Relationship Triad” of Want, Need, and Love. What we “want” in choosing our partners is simple to understand. Wanting consists of the physical and personality characteristics we would prefer to see in a significant other. For example; tall, petite, athletic, blonde, brunette, wealthy, artistic, serious, humorous, ect., are some examples of our wants. Different people want different things. Our wants are not to be discounted, they are important considerations, but “want” is not exactly love,
and many people find themselves falling in love with the exact opposite of what they had thought they had wanted. “Need” on the other hand, can be quite a dysfunctional ingredient when assessing a relationship, especially when the essence of the relationship is based upon it…. Please don’t get me wrong, unless seriously schizoid, we are all in need of others to feel complete, and the diagnosis of co-dependency has too often become a simplistic catch-all phrase for every relationship problem. But many couples do enter relationships with excessive & unhealthy neediness, and often exit the same way. For example consider this common scenario. A woman marries a man who is alcoholic, dispassionate, and unproductive. As a child, this woman was raised by an alcoholic
father who never gave her the unconditional love, praise & tenderness any child deserves. Attempting to obtain the validation she never received from her male parent, she becomes drawn to alcoholic men, with an inappropriate need to care for them & gain their approval. (This is a very common scenario folks). A perfect set-up. The alcoholic needs a caretaker, & she needs to care-take. So what do you think might happen one day if her husband decides to make some meaningful change, sobers up, and gets well? I think you get the idea. Often a relationship like this will fall apart as the “binding need” no longer exists...So what about Love? Love is about as hard to define as the universe itself, and I make no pretense to be the one person who can adequately do so! But I’m pretty sure
of a couple of things. It is an attraction based upon respect, and altruism. It is unconditional…A desire to see the person you love prosper and thrive, even without expecting anything in return. Throw in a dash of chemistry, and spirituality and I think one approaches its essence. Wishing you less neediness and more Love…..Dr. Ron. Dr. Ron is in private practice in Hallandale Florida,…. Have a question?… You can contact Dr. Ronald J. Schlossberg Psy.D; CHT ( Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Nationally Certified Hypnotherapist) by mail: 1250 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd Hallandale Fl., or phone (954) 455-7745, or E-mail AskDocRon@aol.com Please indicate if you want your question answered in this column.
Fit Tips that will help improve the way you feel Curb your sweet tooth Got a late-night sugar craving that just won't quit? "To satisfy your sweet tooth without pushing yourself over the calorie edge, even in the late night hours, think 'fruit first,'" says Jackie Newgent, RD, author of The Big Green Cookbook. So resist that chocolate cake siren, and instead enjoy a sliced apple with a tablespoon of nut butter (like peanut or almond) or fresh fig halves spread with ricotta. Then sleep sweet, knowing you're still on the right, healthy track. Buy comfy sneaks You shouldn't buy kicks that hurt, bottom
line! "Your shoes should feel comfortable from the first step," says Andrew Kastor. So shop in the evening—your feet swell during the day and stop in the late afternoon, so you want to shop when they're at their biggest. Also make sure the sneaks are a little roomy—enough so that you can wiggle your toes, but no more than that. They should be comfy from the get-go, but Kastor says they'll be even more so once you have a good 20 to 40 miles on 'em. Police your portions Does your steak take up more than half your plate?
