Wladimir Klitschko-Shannon Briggs get heated up at Mama Mia's in Hollywood HOLLYWOOD - While Mama Mia's Italian Restaurant has always been known for its great food, the Downtown Hollywood landmark had never been a place to see a good brawl. Over the weekend, Ukraine's Wladimir Klitschko, a current heavyweight champion, was eating, when former two-time champion Shannon Briggs approached him. The bizarre faceoff was caught on video. "Everywhere you go, I go, champ," Briggs yelled in the video recording "What you do, I do, champ." To prove his point, Brigg's grabbed the boxer's plate and dug in to his meal. Klitschko remained cool, pouring some water into a glass and then promptly dumped it on Brigg's head, setting the angry fighter into a rage. This isn't the first time the two boxers have squared off — or have at least tried to. In a strange April confrontation, Briggs broke into a Klitschko press conference and demanded to fight the heavyweight.

Historical From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– NW First Ave. It was an honor to represent our city attending the 'Gala Celebration Dinner' on Saturday night, at the Hilton Hotel and presenting a Proclamation from Mayor Joy Cooper, and the City Commission celebrating this historic day. This Historical site will be an addition to Ebenizer Church, and Ward's Chapel who also celebrated their "100th Anniversary in Hallandale Beach. St. Anne's was established in 1914 by Melbourne Knowles, Ansel Saunders, and A.L. Wilkins, all hailing from the islands of the Bahamas. The first church services were held in a wooden building, located at the corner of what is now Dixie Highway, and Foster Road. The site was utilized as a Social Pool Hall from Monday to Saturday, and converted to a church sanctuary on Sundays. In 1921, the organization purchased the current site of the church which was later destroyed by the "Great Hurricane of 1926," The church sanctuary was rebuilt in 1927, but was destroyed yet again by the "Labor day Hurricane of 1935". It is note worthy to mention, that amidst the rubble of the 1935 Hurricane, the Church bell was salvaged, and was loaned to the City of Hallandale Beach for use as an Air-Raid warning signal during World War II. Subsequently, in the early 1940's, pioneer families worked tirelessly to handcraft cement blocks which were used to construct a new sanctuary. To actually make the cement used in the construction, water had to be carried several blocks from homes to the site by buckets. One of the young men that worked with his father in the construction of St. Annes, was John Saunders, who later became the first black elected City Commissioner to Hallandale, and is presently serving on the Board of St. Annes. The first service in the new church was held on Palm Sunday, March 21, 1948, officiated by the late Rev. John Jarrett, II. Over the century, many priests and layperson's served the St. Anne's Episcopal Church congregation, providing, spiritual and powerful leadership, namely, the Rev. George Taylor, 1968-1977, Rev. Robert Preston, 1977-1991, Rev. Dr. Williamson S. Taylor, 1994-2002, and the Rev. Canon Dr. Ronald N. Fox, 2010- present. After the service on Sunday where over 200 attended the unveiling of the new Historic Marker sign donated by the City of Hallandale Beach describing the history of St. Anne. This is just another addition to the 'Historic Trail' that the Historical Board is forming for now and future generations to enjoy, and to educate our youth of our past. The other Historical sites include, The National Register, Curci House, the Moffet House, and soon to be completed the 'Oldest School house' in Broward County (1910). Vice-Mayor Bill Julian, past President of the Hallandale Historical Board, is currently serving on the Broward County Historical Commission, and has received several local, county, and State awards for his work in Historical Preservation.

National Night Out brings into focus the many vital organizations within a thriving community By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This past Tuesday night, the City of Hallandale Beach Police Department hosted the National Night Out in partnership with Gulfstream Park. This year’s event was outstanding. The department brought together many community partners including Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue, Rotary, “The One Hallandale Committee”, CERT, Crime Watch, Homeland Security, Florida State Troopers, Sheriff’s Department, HB Code Enforcement and others that provided a hands on experience to educate children and adults about our city and our great services. HB SWAT did a demonstration including two officers repelling down the Gulfstream building. The sheriff’s department helicopter performed an aerial display and our K9’s showed off their talents in assisting on arrests. Our residents should be assured that we have an excellent well trained and equipped team of first responders. The most important part of the event, was that all of our residents and visitors that attended. No matter how great our department is, we still need the eyes and ears of all our residents. Crime prevention is a shared responsibility. There are so many times that the simple measures could have prevented crimes. Keeping valuables out sight in your parked car or simply leaving
them home. Locking your car and locking up your home. Making sure if you have an alarm make sure you turn it on only if you are going out for a short period. Getting to know your neighbors so you know who belongs at the house next door is also important. Have you ever stopped and thought that person does not belong there but did not call the police? If you see something, say something. Our department is working hard, 24/7/365 to keep our residents safe. Crime will happen, but let us all do our part to prevent crimes. Code enforcement is an important tool for crime prevention. The Broken Window Theory which was first coined in 1982 by criminologists James Q. Wilson and George Kelling suggests that a broken window left unrepaired will make a building look uncared for or abandoned and soon attract vandals to break all the other windows. Many police departments around the country including HBPD have implemented this philosophy when creating crime prevention programs. Our city through partnership with the CRA have increased basic enforcement like keeping buildings in good repair, yards cut and cleaned up, maintaining clean streets and parks and responding effectively to petty street crime. Team. Over the past year, we established an amnesty program to provide an opportunity to property owners to make sure their property was brought to code without fines and double permit fees. This period just ended. The city commission has now taken measures to update changes to our code enforcement policies to address property owners that are what we call repeat offenders. When code liens are placed on commercial or non-homesteaded properties the city can take the property owners to court and can foreclosure on the liens. This is a last resort measure. The main goal is compliance. Quite often owners will game the system. They will get a notice of violation, not address it until the last minute and then comply only to turn around again and get cited for the same thing. This can take 180 days. It’s like a revolving door, only it costs every taxpayer money and the issue is never truly addressed. On homestead properties it is even worse, the city can lien the property but cannot foreclosure. This means absolutely nothing gets done. Quite often when this happens, the properties become so deteriorated it ends up being an unsafe structure that must be demolished. In some cases,
this process can take years. The broken window does not get fixed. Rather than keeping the revolving door spinning, the city commission is moving to a civil citation method of code enforcement. The city commission directed staff to bring back an ordinance for discussion to implement the new program. The main point from the first discussion on this topic was to make sure code enforcement will still go through the process of working with the property owner first through a courteous contact, then a letter. If they do not comply, they will receive a civil citation. Similar to a traffic ticket that must be
paid. The draft ordinance is to come back to the commission for discussion this month. Adding this tool to our toolbox will help address the truly nuisance properties that are adding to the blight in our neighborhoods. In many cases, it is basic maintenance. The broken window will get fixed before another breaks. The yard will be cut before rodents and trash accumulates. This goes back to the shared responsibility concept. In our CRA area, we have programs that can help fix the window, repair the roof and paint the house so property owners that may not be able to afford the repairs, will have a hand

New watercraft added to help protect swimmers off the City’s coastline Hallandale Beach has added a new watercraft to help protect swimmers off the City’s coastline. The personal watercraft is still being outfitted, but has already been used to rescue a diver in distress. The watercraft is stationed at North Beach City Park and can quickly reach swimmers in distress and return them to shore. Fred Brei Hits It Big in Florida Sire Stakes with Jacks or Better

Fred Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm will take part in the Florida Sire Stakes (formerly known as the Florida Stallion Stakes), a series for juveniles sired by stallions standing in Florida will kick off at Gulfstream Park for the first time Saturday.
With a resume of 12 victories in the Florida Sire Stakes, including three division sweeps of the three-leg series for 2-year-olds, Fred and Jane Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm must be doing something right. They’re also doing things a little bit differently at their 88-acre Ocala farm. Fred Brei attributes the farm’s success to the hands-on approach to raising and training Thoroughbreds. “I bring up my horses differently than others. Every day at Jacks or Better, from the day they are born, every mare and baby come in each morning and they get fed. They get turned out and brought back in that afternoon, and they get turned back out until the next morning,” the 71year-old owner/breeder said. “We’re putting our hands on each horse every day from the day it’s born.” The hands-on approach certainly benefited Awesome Feather, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner
and Eclipse Award champion; Jackson Bend, the multiple Grade 1 stakes winner of more than $1.8 million, and Fort Loudon, the multiple Graded-stakes winner of nearly $1 million; among so many others. Awesome Feather (2010), Jackson Bend (2009) and Fort Loudon (2011) all completed division sweeps in the Florida Sire Stakes (formerly known as the Florida Stallion Stakes), a series for juveniles sired by stallions standing in Florida that will kick off at Gulfstream Park for the first time Saturday. “We start out in September with our yearlings. At that point, we’ll help them get their heads on straight with a discipline and they learn to do what they’re told, instead of just being out in the pasture,” said Brei, whose other Florida Sire Stakes victories came with Awesome Belle (2011), Redbud Road (2011) and Best Plan Yet (2013). “We know we want them to race as a 2-year-old if

they can.” The special attention gives Brei the opportunity to closely monitor each horse’s health and welfare and quickly address any issues that may develop. “It’s a very labor-intensive way of doing business compared to the guy who pasture-feeds. But I’ve always attributed (the success) to the way we do things from when they’re little on up. I have no idea if that’s correct, but I just know I’m not going to change that,” Brei said. “My philosophy is: do everything you can to have a healthy horse from the time they’re born and you’re going to get the best athlete that those genes are capable of producing.” Jacks or Better Farm, which has twice been honored with the Needles Award as Florida’s outstanding small breeding operation, has registered most of its success by breeding their mares to their own stallions, most notably Awesome of Course, the sire of Awesome Feather and Fort Loudon, and Hear No Evil, sire of Jackson Bend. The height of Jacks or Better’s success thus far came at Santa Anita on Nov. 5, 2014 when Awesome Feather prevailed in the Breeders’ Cup championship event for 2-year-old fillies after sweeping the filly division of the Florida Sire Stakes. “It was a tremendous thrill. It was an absolute delight because she was

MAD CAT THEATRE PRESENTS THE PLAY “CENTRALIA” THE UNDERGROUND COAL FIRE THAT BURNED FOR 20 YEARS: In the 1960's, an underground coal fire was sparked by an accident. 20 years later the fire was still burning and the inhabitants of Centralia were forced to relocate. Three people refused to leave and this is their story. These inhabitants travel all over the world to make sure everyone is aware of what happened in Centralia. In 1962, the fire wound up igniting the coal and over the years spread to the vast network of mines beneath homes and businesses, threatening residents with poisonous gases and dangerous sinkholes. More than fifty years ago on a Sunday, a fire at the town dump ignited an exposed coal seam, setting off a chain of events that eventually led to the demolition of nearly every build-
ing in Centralia, a community of 1,400 residents simply gone. To date, the fire still burns and continues to maintain its grip on peoples’ imagination. Visitors come from around the world to see the twisted Route 61 and the sulfurous steam rising from time to time from the ground, is warm to the touch, along the lonely streets where nature has destroyed what coal-industry money once built. It’s a story that has provided material for books, movies and plays. A few residents still remain in Centralia, keeping their
houses up to date, their lawns mowed and calling it home in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. Presently, there is a civil lawsuit trying to block the state from evicting them. Now audiences can experience seeing the story unfold at the SandBox Theatre located at 9816 Northeast 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores from August 14th to August 31st, 2014. Unlike your fingerprints, which are unique to you and cannot be given to someone else for their use, your personal data especially your Social Security number, your bank account or credit card number, your telephone calling card number, and other valuable identifying data can be used, if they fall into the wrong hands, to personally profit at your expense. In the United States and Canada, for example, many people have reported that unauthorized persons have taken funds out of their bank or financial accounts, or, in the worst cases, taken over their identities altogether,
