BakeyLove, Always
Always On And There’s Love In Every Bite
After enrapturing New England hearts and appetites with five locations throughout Boston, Bakey, the bakery and cafe renowned for handcrafted baked goods and its one-of-a-kind babka (all of it built upon the philosophy of “Love, Always”) is set to open its first South Florida location in Hallandale Beach. Soon, South Floridians will come to understand Bakey fans’ rapturous mania and come to experience firsthand the utterly delicious creations of the one-andonly chef, Master Baker and cookbook author Uri Scheft. Opening to the public on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026 Bakey will serve all-day breakfast, lunch, freshly rendered baked goods, especially its famous chocolate babka (also in a multitude of flavors), sourdough breads, rolls, challah, cakes, Burekas, croissants, premium coffee, salads, sandwiches and more. Housed in the former Kosher Bagel Cove space, the first South Florida Bakey (with two more already in the works) will offer a warm, inviting space where guests can stop in for a quick coffee and pastry; grab a freshly-made salad, sandwich, snack for later or sit and linger over freshly baked pastries, delicious breakfast plates and expertly crafted coffee in a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere. In keeping with the space’s history, this Bakey location will also be Kosher.
First launched in Massachusetts in 2021, Bakey comes from legendary baker and culinary craftsman Chef Uri Scheft, internationally recognized for elevating babka from a traditional Eastern European pastry into a modern culinary menu staple. Also known as the Founder of Lehamim Bakery in Tel Aviv, Scheft, who was raised in Israel and Denmark, spent decades refining his craft through training and extensive travels throughout Europe, where he immersed himself in classical baking and patisserie techniques. Scheft then returned to Israel and launched his own acclaimed concept, Lehamim Bakery (“breads” in Hebrew). He later brought his vision to New York City, where he CoFounded Breads Bakery, helping establish it as a renowned Manhattan institution. His distinctive approach earned national recognition, including appearances on Martha Stewart’s television program, and culminated in the publication of his James Beard-nominated cookbook, Breaking

Handel composed Messiah in just 24 days in 1742, although not for Christmas…it was originally intended for the Easter season. It wasn’t until the piece was performed in its entirety in America that audiences embraced it as a Christmas tradition. Today, orchestras the world over delight in performing one of classical music’s most well-known and uplifting masterworks.
Jonathan Kandell of Smithsonian magazine writes, “A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners 250 years after the composer’s death.” In 1789, Mozart posthumously paid Handel the supreme compliment of reorchestrating Messiah but even Mozart confessed himself to be humble in the face of Handel’s genius describing his orchestrations: “When he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt.” In 1823, Beethoven proclaimed Handel to be

Scheft now continues to shape the future of babka and baking through the Bakey concept with five – soon to be seven – locations in Boston and the first of several in South Florida in partnership with fellow bakery industry scion Amir Vadash. Vadash is a generational baker himself; his family owned and operated Vadash Bakery for more than 60 years in Israel. Everything at Bakey is made in-house with fresh ingredients. Since a central edict of the Bakey concept is that “the oven is always on,” the team is constantly baking fresh breads and pastries throughout the day. Their approach to Kosher baking focuses on healthy eating and clean, simple ingredients, including unbleached flour, natural sourdough resulting in products that are both fresh and delicious.
The curated menu will be sweet and savory, with its well-known Chocolate Babka & Almond Babka with high-end German Marzipan at the center, where guests can either purchase loaves or slices. Other menu standouts include

Invitation From The Consul General Of Israel In Miami To Go On A Mission To Israel With European And North American Mayors - Part II
This article is part II of a series on my recent visit to Israel.
After leaving the Ramat Gan emergency operation center we walked to a location that was directly hit by cluster bombs. They were one of the hardest hit by these types of bombs. The warhead actually opens in the air sending anywhere from 100 - 2000 smaller bomblets. The Germans designed them in WWII, and they are banned in over 111 countries.
The ban is due to the fact they cover areas as large as football fields and weather conditions may expand the area. Often the Bomblets do not detonate creating additional hazards to small children that may pick them up. The bomblets still have armor piercing capabilities.
The area where this bomb struck was residential. The building that took the direct hit stood across from a school, which was damaged and is now a grassy lot. The blast blew out windows around the building and could be felt within a fiveblock radius. Thankfully, it happened at 6:30 a.m., before school children arrived. Many people were injured. Another bomb struck the top floor of a building where a couple was sitting in the living room.
I know where all have been seeing reports on TV, but you cannot understand the magnitude of what one bomb can do. It is also against so many laws that Iran is using this weapon against civilians carrying on their daily lives.
The Deputy shared that rebuilding has been essential since many structures are
not to any current standard. There were many high-rise condominiums that had been built and the one hit was fairly new. The other major concern is housing those that are displaced. The town, actually, with state funding assistance housed many residents in a tower that was originally getting ready to open since it was not occupied yet. Others are out in hotels.
The city’s major goal is to have full access to bomb shelters for their residents. Currently when they are rebuilding it is mandatory to have a safe room or dedicated shelter area. Civic buildings are also built with larger shelters and even the new train station has been built as a multipurpose and outfitted for sheltering those that are unable to get shelter during the workday or simply out in the town.
They have also found it is not simply about the safety of the shelters but the operations. While in the shelter. Mental health is a huge issue for all ages. The shelters are planned with different areas that are either separate rooms or simply an area for scheduled activities for children. The ceasefire is in place, and the city continues to move forward with many planning objectives. We were all amazed by the resiliency of the community.

Arc Broward and Miami Dolphins alumnus and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dwight Stephenson teed off the inaugural Dwight Stephenson Arc Broward Golf Classic, presented by Gunther Motor Company, bringing together business leaders, community supporters and former NFL stars for an unforgettable day of golf and philanthropy.

Making An Impact For Pediatric Cancer Research
The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation has received a $100,000 Impact Grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels to support the Pediatric Cancer Program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
The grant was presented to Adriana Trabal Yulfo, M.D., in support of the hospital’s Pediatric Oncology Program during a Hyundai Hope on Wheels ceremony.
The event brought together patients and families from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, representatives from the hospital foundation, Hyundai leadership, local Hyundai dealers and hospital staff to celebrate a partnership spanning more than two decades. Since its inception, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has awarded more than 20 grants totaling $1.55 Million to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, funding Pediatric Cancer Research and advancing care for children and families affected by Cancer.
“Year after year, Hyundai Hope on Wheels continues to make a profound difference in the lives of children with Cancer and their families,” said Kelley Morris, President of the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. “This generous investment strengthens our ability to deliver worldclass care while advancing research that leads to better treatments and improved outcomes. We are honored to partner with an organization that shares our unwavering commitment to giving every child facing Cancer the hope for a healthier future.”
During the ceremony, patient Isabella Depestre shared her personal journey and message of hope. She reflected on being diagnosed with Cancer at age 15 and described how the care team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital supported her through treatment, helping her find strength during the most difficult moments and believe in her future.
“When a child is diagnosed with Cancer, life changes in an instant,” said Dr. Trabal Yulfo. “While treatment is our focus, caring for a child with Cancer involves multidisciplinary care. This gift allows us to support teams who make an extraordinary difference during one of the most challenging times in a family’s life. Here at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, we are committed to delivering exceptional care to every child who walks through our doors, and partnerships like this make this mission possible.”
Following the check presentation, patients participated in Hyundai Hope on Wheels’ signature Handprint Ceremony, leaving colorful handprints on a Hyundai vehicle that will travel across the country to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. Dr. Trabal Yulfo also invited patients to add their handprints to her Hyundai Hope on Wheels lab coat. Each handprint symbolizes the courage, resilience and determination of children battling Cancer and serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for research and support.
More than 15,000 children are diagnosed with Cancer in the United States each year, underscoring the continued need for investment in Pediatric Cancer research. Through its national initiatives, Hyundai Hope on Wheels raises awareness and funds innovative research aimed at improving outcomes for children with cancer. At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, that support helps physicians, researchers and caregivers continue the fight against childhood Cancer and provide hope to families throughout South Florida.

The Jewish people have endured exile, persecution, expulsions and countless attempts to erase us. Yet we are still here. Jews have built lives in America and throughout the free world, yet we have never stopped turning our hearts toward Israel and its eternal capital, Jerusalem. Not just in the past 3 years. And not just since 1948. But for the past 3,298 years, ever since Israel became the official homeland of the Jewish people. And even before that, for nearly 3,800, since G-d promised that land to Abraham…
We pray facing Jerusalem. We end our weddings by breaking a glass in remembrance of the Temple. And we conclude every Passover Seder with the words “Next Year in Jerusalem.”
We never forgot. And because we never forgot, we never gave up hope. Legend has it that Napoleon, the great French leader, was once passing through a small town in Europe, when he heard weeping. Wanting to know what was going on, he followed the sound to inside a building, where he found men, women and children sitting on low chairs & benches, crying. The building was a synagogue and the room which had a magnificent candelabra chandelier at its center, had only a few candles lit. Bothered by the scene and wanting an explanation, Napoleon inquired about the reason for their sadness. They explained that they were mourning for the destruc-
became very angered that people would have the audacity to harm the Temple of such good people, and inquired further to where the damage was, as whatever parts he saw still looked intact. No, they explained. “We’re mourning for the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the Beit Hamikdash, that was destroyed by Rome over 1,700 years ago. Once a year on Tisha B’Avthe 9th day on the Jewish month of Av, we get together to read the Book of Lamentations and mourn the Temple’s destruction while praying that we very soon merit its rebuilding.”
To this Napoleon responded, “A people that remembers the destruction of their land and temple after so many hundreds of years, will surely witness its rebuilding.”
Tisha B’Av was actually the day that both Temples were destroyed. The First Temple built by King Solomon was destroyed by the Babylonians (modern day Iraq) in 3338 (423 BCE). After completing the building of the Second Temple in 3412 (349 BCE), it too was destroyed on the 9th of Av, this time by the Romans in 3829 (69 CE). That was also the day on which the Jews were expelled from Spain in 5252 (1492 CE), the start of World War I in 5674 (1914 CE) and the Gush Katif expulsion in 5765 (2005 CE).
If you were to witness any such atrocity, how would you respond? What would you say? What would you do?
The Talmud tells us that although the
in our time, it’s as if it was destroyed in our time!
In other words, since we still don’t have the Temple rebuilt, it’s as if it is being destroyed in front of our very eyes! We are witnesses to those horrific atrocities! Help! The fire isn’t out yet!!
The good news is that we know what to do to put the fire out. By acting in kind ways to one another, by loving thy neighbor, by simply being good people, we will surely see the Third Temple built in a peaceful Jerusalem. Ah! If we would only merit to enjoy it, this year in Jerusalem!

Dissent Is Not Disloyalty:
The Right And Duty To Criticize
By today’s standards, the Founders would likely be labeled extremists, agitators, radicals, anti-government dissidents and threats to national security.
President Trump has no problem criticizing, condemning, insulting, demonizing and threatening those who refuse to fall in line.
He has branded political opponents “communists,” denounced critics as anti-American, lashed out at NATO allies, threatened to cut off trade with Spain, and referred to Iran’s leaders as “scum” amid the ongoing war.
In Trump’s America, the president is free to call other nations bad actors, label his opponents dangerous, and treat disagreement as betrayal.
But dare to criticize Trump, his administration, ICE, the police state, the war machine, the surveillance state, or the government’s steady assault on the Constitution, and you may find yourself treated as the threat.
This is the hypocrisy of the moment: those in power claim an unlimited right to criticize everyone else, while increasingly denying the people the right to criticize them.
Criticize the government, question the police state, object to ICE raids, oppose war, challenge corruption, reject propaganda, refuse to salute the party line, or insist that public officials obey the Constitution, and you may find yourself accused of being anti-American, extremist, subversive, ungrateful, communist, terrorist-adjacent or worse.
This is how free speech dies: not all at once, but by redefining dissent as disloyalty.
Yet the First Amendment was not written to mandate flattery and applause for those in power. It was written to safeguard the right of the people to criticize, condemn, expose, challenge and resist government abuses without fear of being investigated, surveilled, threatened, prosecuted or treated like enemies of the state.
The American Revolution itself began as an act of criticism.
The Declaration of Independence was a bill of complaints against a government that had abused its power, violated the rights of the people, used the military to intimidate civilians, obstructed justice, imposed unjust burdens, and treated resistance as rebellion.
By today’s standards, the Founders would likely be labeled extremists, agitators, radicals, anti-government dissidents and threats to national security.
What was once rebellion against tyranny is now being recast as a warning sign of extremism.
That is the police state’s playbook for discrediting dissent: start with finger-pointing and namecalling, then turn criticism into subversion, dissent into danger, and those who demand accountability into enemies of the state.
On cue, President Trump and his allies have increasingly wrapped political opposition in the language of extremism, communism, terrorism and anti-Americanism.
The government’s increasing tendency to equate dissent with danger should alarm every American, regardless of party.
We have already seen what this looks like.
Americans who criticize ICE online, write angry emails to government officials, document raids, protest enforcement actions, or speak out against official misconduct increasingly risk visits, warnings, subpoenas, surveillance or investigations by the government’s secret police.
The government does not need to jail everyone in order to silence a population. It only needs to make examples of a few.
A knock on the door. A warning from agents. A subpoena. A phone call from law enforcement. A file opened. A name entered into a database. A social media post flagged. A protest monitored. A journalist questioned. A nonprofit investigated. A student visa threatened. A donor list scrutinized. A museum audited. A professor disciplined. A mayor denounced as anti-American. A citizen taught to think twice before speaking again.
This is how a free people are trained to censor themselves.
The Government
Let us be clear: violence and true threats can and should be investigated. No one has a constitutional right to assault, threaten, stalk, bomb, kill or terrorize.
But criticism is not violence. Anger is not terrorism. Dissent is not extremism. Opposition is not treason. Petitioning the government for redress of grievances is not a crime. It is the essence of citizenship.
Yet every administration, sooner or later, discovers the convenience of labeling its critics as threats.
Richard Nixon kept enemies lists. George W. Bush gave us the Patriot Act, warrantless surveillance, watchlists and the language of “with us or against us.” Barack Obama targeted whistleblowers. Joe Biden’s administration leaned on agencies and platforms in the name of combatting misinformation and domestic extremism.
Donald Trump has taken all of that machinery and openly aimed it at political enemies, protesters, immigrants, journalists, universities, museums, law firms and anyone else who refuses to bow.
The right to criticize government cannot be treated as a partisan indulgence.
No matter which party holds power, the people must be free to criticize the government.
This is the great danger of the moment.
We are being told that patriotism requires amnesia.
That is a lie.
Real patriotism is not worship of government. Real patriotism is not loyalty to a president. Real patriotism is not blind obedience to police. Real patriotism is not a flag big enough to cover up injustice.
Real patriotism is the willingness to tell the truth about your country because you believe it can and must be better.
Those who criticize America are often the only ones still taking America seriously.
When the government claims the power to decide what history may be taught, what speech may be tolerated, what criticism may be investigated, what protest may be monitored, what viewpoint may be flagged, and what truths may be spoken, the people have a duty to push back.
We must insist that the First Amendment protects the speech government hates most. We must insist that criticizing ICE is not a crime. We must insist that criticizing the president is not treason. We must insist that criticizing police is not extremism. We must insist that criticizing America’s failures is not anti-American. We must insist that history belongs to the people, not to politicians. We must insist that no president, no agency, no party and no bureaucrat gets to decide what patriotism requires.
We must insist that the Constitution means what it says.
After all, the government works for us—not the other way around. The moment Americans forget that, the experiment in self-government is over. So criticize the government.
Criticize it loudly. Criticize it relentlessly.
Criticize it when it spies, lies, censors, raids, detains, prosecutes, propagandizes, militarizes, profiteers and abuses.
Criticize it when it rewrites history, calls truth anti-American, mistakes obedience for patriotism, and forgets that “We the People” are the masters and the government is the servant.
That is the duty of a free people.
As I make clear in Battlefield America: The War on the American People and its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the police state does not need everyone to agree with it. It only needs enough people to fear disagreeing with it.
We do not owe the government our silence.
We owe the Constitution our vigilance.
