Jungle Queen Enters Its Next Era Since 1935, Jungle Queen has carried guests through Fort Lauderdale’s waterways. For over 90 years, Jungle Queen has been more than a scenic riverboat tour. It has been a Fort Lauderdale tradition, a family legacy, and one of the most recognizable ways generations of residents and visitors have experienced the city from the water. Since 1935, Jungle Queen has carried guests through Fort Lauderdale’s waterways, offering scenic cruises, dinner experiences, island entertainment, and a sense of nostalgia that has become part of the city’s identity. Alongside the Jungle Queen, the River Queen has also played an important role in the company’s story, serving as a vessel for special charters and private experiences. At the heart of that legacy is the Faber family. The Jungle Queen story begins in 1935. It was founded by Al Starts who at that time created a daytime marketplace, featuring the sale of the Indians merchandise and alligator wrestling. What began as a riverboat attraction grew into something much larger: a destination, a gathering place, and a living piece of local history. Through reclaimed wood marked by termite activity, alongside carved wood, ceramics, and paper, Jenkins explores themes of movement, hidden histories, and interconnected environments. The $2,500 scholarship will be used towards her tuition at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. Established in 2025, The Robin Trapani Memorial Scholarship honors Trapani’s incredible life and love for the Girl Scout community. This scholarship is awarded to local Girl Scouts who intend to pursue careers in vocational trades and skilled jobs that require specialized training and education after high school. Fadya graduated in May from Sheridan Technical High School in Fort Lauderdale with a 4.9 weighted GPA and where she completed the school’s Legal Administrative Specialists Program. After earning a degree in criminal justice from FIU, Fadya plans to enroll in a state police academy. She eventually hopes to become a specialized investigator with Peace Officer Standards and Training certifications. As a proud Muslim woman, Fadya seeks to change the face of authority in law enforcement and break down barriers of mistrust in minority communities. The week-long convention includes business sessions, committee meetings, service projects, and social functions, all topped off with formal evening ceremonies at which national DAR award recipients are honored. “Continental Congress is a timehonored tradition and opportunity for our members to come together to celebrate our country’s rich history, share ideas, and mark their past year in service. With our nation commemorating its 250th Anniversary this year, DAR chapters have been sharing the history of those inspiring individuals who contributed to American independence,” said Ginnie Sebastian Storage, DAR President General. “Service to our country is at the heart of everything DAR does, and it is always uplifting to welcome thousands of Daughters to our historic headquarters in Washington, D.C. The DAR 2026 Outstanding Teacher of American History Award was presented to Dr. Karl McCarty, of Campbellsport, Wisconsin. The National Defense Night Ceremony,

the tribute, the President General’s Medallion will be presented to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum; the New York Medical Examiner’s Office – World Trade Center DNA Identification Office; VOICES - Center for Resilience; and 9/11 Day. The Founders Medal for Heroism will be presented to Retired U.S. Army Colonel Marilyn Wills of Sarasota, Florida, who helped to evacuate many people to safety from the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The DAR Medal of Honor will be presented to community service leader Donna Herndon of Murray, Kentucky. The Margaret Cochran Corbin Award honoring distinguished women in military service will be presented to Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Nicole Malachowski of Colorado Springs, Colorado. tributed to our great city’s economic prosperity.” Visitors to History Fort Lauderdale’s “Timeless Tropics: Florida’s Changing Landscape” will experience Tim Forman’s artfully curated oil on canvas masterworks of the Florida Everglades, waterscapes, beachscapes and natural wildlife. These landscapes are complemented by David Paulo’s bold photographic narrative of buildings and neighborhoods in South Florida that are significant to culture and life of minority communities. Documented cities include Sistrunk, Lauderhill, and Dania Beach. Historical maps of Florida from pre-Revolutionary War/Spanish Florida in 1749 to British controlled Florida in 1763 to Florida as a U.S. state in 1845 and illustrative panels will context and provide clarity about our history. Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and raised in South Florida. He first picked up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-today lives. David Paulo, a Lauderhill native, has cultivated a career as a digital creative by contributing his graphic and photography skills to showcasing South Florida culture. Through film photography, David has captured and shared historical landmarks and cultures not only in South Florida but across the United States on his platforms. His commitment to his community has earned him recognition from CBS Miami, WSVN 7, the Miami Herald, WLRN, and South Florida’s 99 Jamz Radio Station for his outreach and philanthropic initiatives. Voices For Children Of Broward County To Host Back-To-School Extravaganza Back to school, back to saving the day! Voices for Children of Broward County (Voices) is hosting a Back-to-School Extravaganza at Old Navy in Oakwood Plaza in Hollywood on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Back-to-School Extravaganza is a part of Voices’ year-long 15th Anniversary Celebration and expands its mission to ensure that every child and young adult in Broward County who has experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment has access to essential resources and programs that promote long-term stability and well-being. Jack & Jill Center Summer Campers Learn To Be Lifesavers During CPR Training Just because school is out, learning shouldn’t take a summer break. Education is year-round. That’s why Rick Case Automotive Group President and CEO Rita Case paid a visit to Jack & Jill Center to donate CPR Anytime Training Kits for them to participate in CPR training. “I embrace every opportunity I have to teach children important skills they can apply now and take with them as they progress into adulthood,” said Case. “I cannot emphasize enough the importance of feeling confident performing CPR because you never know when you might need to perform this lifesaving technique. I have made it my mission to equip as many people in our community as possible with the ability to be a hero and save a life. We are turning bystanders into lifesavers.” The team from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital led the CPR training and the team from the American Heart Association was also on hand to assist in facilitating the training. The campers presented handmade thank you notes to Case, and they each took home a CPR kit for their family that includes a Mini Anne CPR learning manikin, one foam board AED training simulator and digital access to instruction and practice in English and Spanish. The American Heart Association’s Nation of Lifesavers initiative focuses on turning bystanders into lifesavers by encouraging people to learn Hands-Only CPR and act in emergencies. In South Florida, thanks to a generous donation from Rick Case Automotive Group, the American Heart Association Greater Miami/Fort Lauderdale has made CPR Anytime Training Kits available to nonprofits, schools, hospitals and city governments in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. According to the American Heart Association, 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital every year. In order to save more lives, the number of people who respond to cardiac arrest by calling 911 must increase, they must have access to high-quality CPR, and they must get and use an AED as soon as it is available. The importance of CPR kits cannot be overstated, particularly for children and infants. More than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital each year with 40% related to sports and nearly 20% are infants. Unfortunately, infant mortality rates in Broward County are on the rise, and the

Invitation From The Consul General Of Israel In Miami To Go On A Mission To Israel With European And North American Mayors By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper

Last month, I received an invitation from the Consul General of Israel here in Miami to go on a mission with European and North American Mayors. This invitation I did not take lightly. It is not easy to pick up and go halfway around the world. With plenty going on in the city including budget and tax debate going on it has been nonstop. While flying into an active war zone was also a consideration. I knew how safe Israel is. Since October 7th I have corresponded with many people that have been there and live there. The question became what if I get stuck there. I knew this mission was going to be very educational since it was coupled with Israel Muni EXPO 2026. We would get a chance to interact and learn from mayors that have been dealing with a war for over 3 years. We also would be visiting surrounding areas that were impacted and

other official facilities. Most importantly as an American Jewish Mayor, I decided that it was critically important to show solidarity with Israel leaders. There were over 130 mayors in different groups that were escorted by diplomatic corps members, some former assistant consul generals. Our group was comprised of 5 mayors from south Florida, one from New Jersey and mayors from Germany, Portugal, Italy, Czech, Faro Islands, Romania and an Israeli influencer/reporter Josh Aronson who is an advocate for Autism or who happens to be on the spectrum. The following weekly articles will be a briefing on the mission. Our first day in Israel started from our home base the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv. This area is considered southern Israel. It needs to be noted that Israel is geographically just about the same size of New Jersey but with a larger population. The

topography is very diverse with mountains and plains to the north, the Mediterranean Sea along its coast and a vast desert south. Tel Aviv has one of the best beaches in my opinion in the world. To it’s east is Jerusalem with the famous Old city. Our first stop was to visit with the Deputy Mayor Assef Weiss of Ramat Gan. This town is a vibrant urban area that has been strategically planned as mixed used. The top industries in the area are high tech and financial. This was one of the areas struck numerous times with cluster bombs. There was some speculation they were targeted due to their industries but in actuality it was due to the ability to reach the area with bombs. We met at their municipal complex and walked their Emergency Operations Center two stories below ground in a converted underground parking garage. It houses various offices that run a com-

mutation hub, rescue and municipal services. Like our EOC kitchen, showers and stored mattresses. The biggest difference is that their EOC and other municipalities have a direct interoperable statewide technology with every municipality on the same system. Much like our EOC but total technology interconnected with other cities’ national operations. The amount of planning and resiliency of their city and the strength of their leadership that has been under bombing for years is remarkable. Hollywood’s Accela Launch Brings Services Together In One System A new chapter in the City of Hollywood’s digital permitting services is expected to begin in August with the launch of the next phase of its online permitting platform. Following the successful rollout of Phase 1 in 2024, the upcoming implementation will expand the system to include all permit types within Development Service, including those handled by the Building Division, Planning and Urban Design, Engineering, and Transportation and Mobility, as well as services provided by other departments such as, Code Compliance. Once the transition is complete, the current BCLA system will be phased out and all associated applications and processes will move to Accela. The enhanced platform is designed to create a more streamlined customer experience by providing a single online location for submitting applications, monitoring project status, scheduling inspections and

accessing case information. By consolidating services into one system, the City aims to improve accessibility, efficiency and transparency for residents, businesses and contractors. To support the transition, the City has provided training opportunities and will continue to offer helpful resources, including online tutorials, instructional materials and videos. New World Screwworm Since the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the United States on June 3rd, pet owners and shelters alike have expressed concern about what this might mean for their animals. The larvae of the parasitic fly infest wounds and can create significant tissue damage if left untreated. Veterinarians are encouraging shelters and pet owners, including those who work with colonies of stray or other unowned animals, to remain vigilant and stay informed, especially because NWS infestations can be easily prevented and treated. Dr. Guilherme Verocai, an Associate Professor and Director of the Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offers guidance for how owners can identify, prevent and manage the parasite. How New World Screwworm Attacks Animals NWS, or Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a species of parasitic blow fly with larvae known for their screw-like shape. While the adult fly is relatively harmless, the danger comes when female flies lay eggs in open wounds. “The female fly is attracted to wounds or lesions on an animal. It can be as small as a tiny scratch or a post-surgical wound,” Verocai said. “They will lay eggs around the edge of the wound, and within 12-hours, the larvae will hatch from those eggs and begin feeding on live tissue. “That’s really key with C. hominivorax,” he said. “Unlike other blow fly species, C. hominivorax requires live animals to survive.” The adult fly thrives in warm climates, with activity typically occurring between 65 and 91 degrees Fahrenheit. These flies, which Verocai describes as “strikingly metallic in color” — with metallic greens and blues and red eyes — should not be confused with their “first cousin,” Cochliomyia macellaria, another species of blow fly that is more common in the U.S., but which is typically harmless. “Adult C. hominivorax are not going to be seen resting on the animals like horn flies or stable flies; they’re typically resting in forested areas,” Verocai said. How Fast It Spreads and Why It’s So Dangerous Female C. hominivorax will lay a couple of hundred eggs around an existing wound, and within 12 hours, depending on the temperature, the eggs will hatch. This can result in an infestation that can escalate quickly and become severe as the small larvae eat and grow larger. “You’re not going to have just one or two larvae — it can be dozens or even hundreds feeding on live tissue,” Verocai said. “And it’s not a picky parasite; although it rarely infests poultry or birds, any warm-blooded mammal is quite suitable as a host, if given the opportunity. “Screwworms can infest all warm-blooded animals, including dogs; cats; livestock; wildlife, including, rarely, birds; and even people,” he said. “In endemic areas cattle are most commonly affected, but dogs are usually the second most affected among domestic species.” Stray or unowned dogs and cats are likely at higher risk of NWS infestation for several reasons, including being more prone to injuries and not having access to veterinary care and preventative medicines that may treat or prevent an infestation. Because the parasite targets living flesh, it can

cause extensive tissue damage and, if left untreated, may quickly become life threatening, depending on the location and severity of the infestation. Early detection is key for managing NWS infestations; pet owners should watch for: • Visible larvae in a wound • Wounds that worsen quickly • A foul odor, often described as decaying tissue • Swelling or irritation around a wound How To Prevent and Treat New World Screwworm Preventing NWS infestation starts with routine care and awareness, which can include: • Checking pets daily for wounds or injuries • Cleaning and treating wounds promptly • Monitoring surgical wounds daily until completely healed • Keeping pets up to date on veterinary care • Seeking veterinary attention for unusual wounds or odors “If you notice anything concerning, don’t wait — reach out to your local veterinarian,” Verocai said. “Early diagnosis, confirming, and treating as early as possible makes a big difference.” Because this is not a disease — it is an insect infestation — when the insects are removed, the animal typically recovers, especially if attention is given early. It’s also important that owners keep their pets on routine parasite preventative medicines, some of which can be effective against screwworm larvae. Since April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued conditional approval or emergency use authorization for a number of antiparasitic products that prevent and treat NWS in multiple species. New World Screwworm Resources There are many educational resources available through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Animal Health Commission, and U.S. Department of Agriculture, all of which provide practical guidance on identifying potential signs of screwworm infestation, monitoring wounds, and knowing when to seek veterinary care. “If you suspect New World Screwworm in your dogs or cats, do not wait,” Verocai said. “Immediately isolate suspected animals and contact either the Texas Animal Health Commission at: 1 (800) 550-8242 for livestock cases; Texas Parks and Wildlife at: (512) 389-4505 for wildlife cases; or your local veterinarian for your pets or other small animals.” More information on reporting cases and submitting samples to the appropriate authorities also is available through Texas A&M AgriLife. Verocai emphasizes that while NWS is in the U.S., and may be here for a while, there’s no need for owners to panic. Though these parasites cause serious issues, by continuing the habits that help protect your companion animals — including the regular use of parasite preventatives — and by staying vigilant and addressing wounds early, owners can rest assured that their pets will be safe from NWS.
