Pet Diarrhea:

“However, diarrhea can also reflect a more serious issue elsewhere in the body,” Hung warns.

More sinister causes may include: infectious diseases, the ingestion of poisonous substances, a variety of illnesses, such as: Kidney Disease or even, Cancer.

“While there are serious causes for diarrhea, the majority of diarrhea cases are uncomplicated and do not require hospitalization,” Hung said.

If a pet has a sudden bout of diarrhea, there are some at-home measures that pet owners can take to help their loved ones.

Hung says that pet owners can make sure that plenty of water is available to their pets, although, they should never force feed them with water.

A bland and low-fat diet, can also be offered for a short period of time. Examples include: shredded, non-seasoned, fully cooked chicken breast or cottage cheese mixed with cooked,

plain white rice. Since this diet is not balanced, however, it should not be offered for more than, a couple of days.

Pet owners also can try to prevent diarrhea by making sure their pets are on appropriate, thoroughly cooked and balanced diets.

“Treats (including human food) should be kept to a minimum,” Hung said. “Any changes to diets, should occur gradually over a couple of days. Pets should also be kept on a consistent parasite preventative regimen and a vaccine schedule.”

Occasional diarrhea is unavoidable, a pet may be able to overcome minor bouts on their own or with the help of their owners.

“Ultimately, the cure for diarrhea depends on its cause,” Hung said, adding that some pets may need to see a veterinarian for medical help.

“Any diarrhea that is profuse and watery, mostly bloody or

that lasts longer than seven to 14 days, should be addressed by a veterinarian,” Hung advises.

“Because diarrhea can be a warning sign of a systemic disease, if not addressed in a timely manner, these systemic diseases can progress and become harder to treat.”

Ongoing diarrhea can result in weight loss, nutrient deficiencies and dehydration. Signs of dehydration, including lethargy, inappetence and unwillingness to drink, also, indicate the need for veterinary attention.

“That said, if your pet has diarrhea, but is eating and drinking and seems like themselves, don’t panic! Although a pet with diarrhea in the house can certainly be stressful, it is not necessarily an emergency,” he said.

“You can schedule an appointment with your family veterinarian and they can help you decide, what is needed for your pet.”

When to Head to The Vet If a pet has a sudden bout of diarrhea, there are some at-home measures that pet owners can take to help their loved ones.

Diarrhea is a natural part of life, all pets (and pet owners) have had it, at some point.

While diarrhea can be smelly, messy and potentially, embarrassing, Dr. Michael Hung, a small animal internal medicine resident at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offers the run down on what causes it and when a pet owner should be worried.

Diarrhea is defined as loose, watery, more frequent bowel

movements and simply indicates, that something is irritating the GI tract, according to Hung.

“It occurs when something either impairs the intestine’s ability to absorb water or causes the intestine to secrete more water,” he said. “This can be from a problem originating within the intestines—such as parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, a sudden change in diet or even, stress.”

When diarrhea is caused by something obvious, such as a pet getting into the garbage or eating too many table scraps, intestinal worms or stress from a recent move, the episode passes quickly, it can be considered normal and self-resolving.

As indicated, the credit is for people that receive some type of benefit from the state or federal government, or that meet low income guidelines. These criteria will depend on the number of people in the household too. As a general guideline, families might be eligible for Lifeline, if the household’s total income is less than 150% of the poverty guidelines that are established by the federal government. Anyone seeking a credit based on these low income levels will also need to have proof of it through their household savings and other information.

For people enrolled into some form of public assistance, they will automatically qualify for a reduction in their bills. The programs that will qualify households include: Supplement Security Income (SSI), National School Lunch Program, LIHEAP, Medicaid, SNAP Food Stamps or Section 8 Housing. There are others that qualify as well, however those are some of the

most common programs that Lifeline customers receive. Proof of receipt of these benefits will be required from any applicants and they can call their cellular provider to enroll or the state, for more information.

Whether someone meets the income thresholds or benefit guidelines noted above, please note, if they have a free phone from from another cell carrier, then they may not be qualified for the Florida service.

Individuals can decide to cancel those phones if they want, but Florida will not allow residents to enroll into multiple telephone assistance programs. Individuals can therefore only receive savings, on one phone, per household.

If the state approves someone for the LifeLine discount, they will need to re-enroll each year.

The income and/or other criteria will need to be satisfied on an annual basis. This is a time defined program, that is limited in scope and duration.

Many people of all income levels have been turning to prepaid cell providers in order to save money on their monthly bills. These companies will also generally participate in the Lifeline program, there may be other providers as well.

So called standard telecommunication companies that may offer discounts include the major,

national providers. However, many other smaller companies that operate in Florida, may also provide credits to income qualified customers. The state the Office of the Public Counsel, can provide the latest list.

Whether a free telephone (or cell phone), financial aid for bills or discounts, assistance is offered in Florida, with a focus on senior citizens as well as very low income families. Beach cleaning is a very important job in every beach front community. I (Mayor, Joy Cooper) along with my colleagues have received many calls regarding beach cleaning and I want to apologize on behalf of our city for the recent problems we have encountered.

This past Friday, Gulfstream Park hosted an Alternative Prom for our 2021 Graduates, along with many sponsors. The event was put together by Eve Paul of Chateau De Everose, an amazing and creative Hallandale Beach event planner. She put on, an amazing event. Beach cleaning is a very important job in every beachfront community. I, along with my colleagues, have received many calls regarding beach cleaning and I wanted to apologize, on behalf of our City, for the recent problems that we have encountered.

Over the past months, there have been two major issues. One failure is directly in response, due to our Public Works

Department’s Directors for not renewing our beach cleaning permit, which is regulated by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Many of our residents that live on the beach and our environmentalists, are aware that we have turtle nesting that occurs on our small stretch of beach.

Every day, the beach during turtle season must be inspected for nests, before cleaning. The inspection is done by a Marine Permit Holder authorized by the FWC. If we do not renew the permits, we cannot clean for 65 days, during the season.

This was one of the reasons that we were held up over the past months, but, most importantly, our beach cleaning equipment kept breaking down. We have equipment that rakes and another piece that rolls our beach. The rack equipment broke down to the extent, that it could not be repaired, however, the rolling equipment was working and then, the tractor that pulls it broke down as well.

Equipment on the beach, has a short life for the obvious reason of exposure to sea salt.

At a recent meeting, we approved an emergency pur-

chase for a new beach cleaner that can rake the beach. In the meantime, we have been using, the roller. I do need to thank the City of Hollywood for partnering with us, as a backup, when our equipment was down. In years past, we had partnered with them, I then informed the staff of this possibility and it worked out.

When everything is in place, permits and equipment, there are still strict guidelines. Only equipment with 10-PSI tire pressure, can operate on the beach and cleaning equipment, must not penetrate more than two inches into the beach’s surface. All materials collected, must then, be removed from the beach and we must also keep equipment, 10 feet from plantings.

The FWC statement, when it comes to cleaning, is as follows.

“Beach cleaning, involves the removal of material left by the tides or beach goers, on Florida’s sandy shorelines.

Stranded seaweed provides an important food source for beach and near-shore food chains and should be left in place when possible. Human debris can pose a hazard to humans and animals and should be removed.“ This leaves some leeway,

when it comes to the removal of seaweed. I need to note, due to the active beach, here, in our City, we will get seaweed and in some cases, an abundance. We also do not want to lose equipment or have it stranded going too far east of the high tide line?

It is a balance that, as of the writing of this article, the equipment came in and is now, in service.

Over the past year, many items and projects were approved but due to lack of oversight and turnover, these projects had languished. I am happy to report, that under the leadership of our new City Manager, Dr. Jeremy Earle, Assistant City Manager, Naomi Sandoval and Director of Public Works, Jeff Odom’s many projects, are now being designed and queued up, for construction.

Back in 2015, the Commission embarked on evaluating our entire City’s infrastructure, through a Basis of Design Report, it had mapped out everything in our City, made suggestions as to what needed to be addressed, it also included the water systems, the drainage systems, the wastewater systems, the roadways and the sidewalks.

The Commission started to

discuss these projects, but, the CRA picked up, the above ground projects in the CRA, as they had the ability to fund the projects. The City focused on sidewalks with a plan to repair, replace and add ADA crosswalks and this plan is moving forward with help, from Broward County.

At the last Commission Meeting, we had approved many other projects to move into the designs phase. Water distribution, water connection to North Maimi Beach, the addition of a new water production skid to our water plant, Layne Boulevard Water Line Replacement, Stormwater Master Plan System, two Lift station replacements and a force main replacement. In these cases, there have been funds in our water and wastewater accounts, that are earmarked.

The BODR, contains hundred of millions of dollars of infrastructure, that is at end of its life and is in need of, replacement. While we continue to work on grants and other funding sources, within the next year and half, we will be developing a proposal for a Government Obligation Bond.

Many cities are in the process or have already, done the same.

Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale have passed bonds recently and we as a City, will need to come together and make these improvements.

Our City Manager, said it best. In summary, he stressed that we do not want to be like Fort Lauderdale with failing pipes that impact our environment, which lead to fines, we have seen this begin to happen with many water main breaks and the recent sewer leak in the Three Islands area.

Distracted driving. Teen passengers, are the biggest distraction to teen drivers, but, cell phones, come in second. Many teens admit to interacting with their phone and in-car infotainment systems while behind the wheel, despite the clear dangers.

Make a family rule, covering these and other distractions, that everyone abides by.

Drowsy driving. Teens have a hard time getting enough sleep and often struggle with drowsiness. Drowsy driving, is as dangerous as drunk driving and teens, have the highest risks.

100 DEADLIEST DAYS Statistics from 2010 - 2019 Nationwide • Each year, an average of 2,081 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes; 636 of those (30%) occurred, during the 100 deadliest days.

• More than 7,038 people died, in teen-related summertime crashes, from 2010 to 2019.

• That’s more than seven people a day, each summer compared to the rest of the year (six people/day).

Florida • An average of 36 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes during this time.

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens ages 16-19. In fact, six teens are killed each day in crashes that are entirely preventable. Even the best and brightest teens, have an increased risk, of being involved, in a deadly crash.

“Teens lack the experience, skills and maturity of a seasoned driver, which contribute to an increase in the chance that, there will be a deadly outcome, not just for the teen driver, but also for any passenger, as well as others on the road,” Jenkins continued. “So, we all have a vested interest, in ensuring that teens are safe behind the wheel.”

Understanding the risks and knowing the facts, will prepare, both, you and your teen(s) for the

road ahead. Here are some of the highest risk factors for teens.

Driving with passengers. Teen drivers’ crash risks multiply, when they have teen passengers, so, set limits and enforce them.

Driving at night. Night driving is more dangerous due to limited visibility, fatigue and impaired drivers, on the road. This is especially, a risky time for teens. Limit the time that your novice driver spends, behind the wheel, at night.

Not wearing a safety belt.

Wearing a safety belt, greatly reduces the risk of being hurt or killed in a crash. Make a rule: Everyone buckles up, for every trip.

Stephen Cummings Receives Award Stephen Cummings, has been an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach since its inception, in 1994. He has served Kiwanis in many capacities and chartered the Hallandale High School Key Club in 2003, watching many young adults blossom through community service. In 2010, an award was established in his name recognizing the most philanthropic Kiwanis member in Broward County who assisted students with service projects, district convention expenses and college scholarships. In 2017, he absorbed the entire cost of chartering eight luxury buses, enabling 400 Key Club members and faculty advisors to travel at his expense to their State Convention, in Orlando. He has frequently purchased pizza, chicken wings and cheese platters for meetings, so the students enjoyed some nourishment and has purchased hundreds of club shirts for Key Club members at Hallandale High School. Cumm-

ings has watched many of his Hallandale High School Key Club members flourish, but is most proud of Past Club President, Sabrina Javellana, who, became the youngest Hallandale Beach City Commissioner in 2018, at the ripe old age of twenty and former, standout member, Noemi Lopez, who, has become a filmmaker, she is producing and directing, she has been forming her own company. It has been a great honor for Stephen, to be presented with an award with his namesake for 2020-2021, for his continued financial support of our aspiring youths, in Broward County.
