Awareness Is Key: 3 Steps To Help Recognize Stroke Signs And
(Feature Impact) A Stroke can happen to anyone at any age. In fact, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a Stroke, with approximately 800,000 people experiencing a Stroke annually, according to the American Heart Association, making it a leading cause of death and serious, long-term disability.
A Stroke happens when normal blood flow in the brain is interrupted. When parts of the brain don’t get the oxygen-rich blood they need, those cells die.
However, many Strokes may be prevented, treated and overcome by understanding the risk factors and taking steps toward managing them.
“When a Stroke happens, every minute matters,” said Dr. Adrian Jaquin-Valdivia, a Stroke Neurologist at HCA Healthcare and American Stroke Association volunteer expert. “The faster someone gets treatment, the better the chance of saving Brain Function. On average, nearly 2 million brain cells die every minute a Stroke goes untreated. Early treatment improves survival rates and reduces disability.”
Know the Warning Signs Because Strokes do not discriminate, knowing the signs is key. To help you recognize common warning signs and symptoms of stroke and take action in moments that matter, remember this simple acronym: B.E. F.A.S.T.
B: Balance loss sudden difficulty with walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination.
E: Eye (or vision) changes sudden vision loss or trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
F: Face drooping one side of the face droops or feels numb; a smile may look uneven.
A: Arm weakness one arm feels weak or numb or drifts downward when raised.
Risks For Better Outcomes
S: Speech difficulty a telltale sign of a Stroke is slurred speech or trouble speaking.
T: Time to call 911
If someone is having any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call emergency services immediately to jumpstart care. Be sure to check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms started.
Explore the signs by playing the interactive, web-based B.E. F.A.S.T. Experience to see what stroke symptoms may look, feel and sound like.
Take Steps to Protect Your Health
To Help Avoid Having A Stroke
Approximately 80% of Strokes are preventable, according to the American Stroke Association. Everyday choices –such as eating well, moving more, not smoking and keeping up with routine health screenings, along with managing risk factors with the support of a health care professional – can help lower Stroke risk.
Manage Risk Factors
High Blood Pressure is the leading risk factor for Stroke, according to the 2025 American Heart Association/ACC Guideline for the Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults. Controlling Blood Pressure through regular checkups, at-home monitoring, following your treatment plan and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of Stroke and support overall brain health. Additionally, having a Stroke or a MiniStroke, known as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), increases the chances of having a second one. That’s why identifying what caused your Stroke and reducing your personal risk factors can help protect your health and reduce the risk of another Stroke.

“Build A Better World: The Future Begins With You” Museum Of Discovery And Science Opens
The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) is proud to announce the opening of Phase 1 of Build a Better World: The Future Begins with You, a permanent exhibit gallery rooted in the character strengths of critical thinking, confidence, cooperation and caring. Designed for children, families and adults, the gallery connects environmental learning and character development through interactive experiences that invite guests to explore how everyday choices can help protect the ecosystems and communities we share. This exhibit is presented and made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., with additional support from JM Family Enterprises, Broward Cultural Division, Weston Nissan/Weston Volvo and the Hudson Family Foundation.
Phase 1 debuts three signature experiences that bring South Florida ecosystems to life: the Atlantic and Pacific Coral Reef Aquariums, the Mangrove Mangal Climber and the Everglades Theater, featuring Lilly, an artificial intelligencepowered river otter.
Build a Better World transforms environmental learning into a characterbuilding experience that encourages guests to think critically, act with confidence, cooperate with others and care for the natural world. Designed for children and families, the exhibit strengthens guests’ understanding of South Florida’s ecosystems, deepens their sense of connection to them and empowers them to see how their choices can help shape a stronger future.
“Build a Better World: The Future Begins with You reflects MODS’ commitment to environmental sustainability as a core pillar of learning, inspiring children and families to explore the natural world, build character and discover solutions for a stronger future,” said Joseph P. Cox, President and CEO of MODS. “This vivid and meaningful permanent exhibit brings South Florida ecosystems to life while encouraging guests to think critically, act with confidence, work together and care for the communities and environments we share.”
The Atlantic and Pacific Coral Reef Aquariums, presented by Weston Nissan/ Weston Volvo and the Hudson Family Foundation, serve as vibrant anchors for the gallery, surrounding guests with the color, motion and biodiversity of marine ecosystems while highlighting the interconnectedness of life below the surface.
At the heart of the experience is the Mangrove Mangal Climber, presented by JM Family Enterprises, believed to be the world’s largest mangrove-themed climbing structure. The custom-fabricated steel climber transforms active play into environmental discovery, inviting children to move through platforms, cargo nets and mangrove root-inspired forms while building confidence, cooperation and problemsolving skills. Along the way, children discover how mangroves protect shorelines, support wildlife and strengthen coastal systems. Nearby, a Burmese python habitat introduces guests to the impact of invasive species and the importance of ecological balance in the Everglades.
The Everglades Theater, presented by Broward Cultural Division, brings South Florida ecology to life through cinematic storytelling, stunning visuals and interactive technology that makes environmental learning personal, innovative and accessible. Guided by Lilly, an artificial intelligence-powered river otter, guests step into the story of the Everglades through experiences that spark curiosity,
Phase 1 Of New Permanent Exhibit
build connection and inspire care for this vital ecosystem. The theater opens with interactive games and storytelling designed to deepen understanding of the Everglades and the role each guest can play in protecting it. Together, these experiences establish Build a Better World as a major new destination within MODS, giving families a visually rich, distinctly South Florida experience that will continue to grow as the exhibit expands in a future phase anticipated for fall 2026.

See Something, Say Something, Do Something
By Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper
In addition to being Jewish History Month, May 7th was National Day of Prayer. Since 1952 this day was designated for every American to turn to God in prayer. It was proposed as a result of the Korean War. While this holiday was challenged constitutionally the challenge failed and the holiday has been recognized as a time for all religions to turn to prayer. This year, I hosted the day of prayer in partnership with PAL and Legacy of Hope at the MLK Dream Center. Reverend Dr. Jennifer Reynolds was the MC. We heard remarks from Reverend Dr. Anthony A. Sanders, Imam MR Sarjeel Ahmed, Dr. Deborah Brown, and Minister Shirley King. We were also joined by Senator Shevrin Jones who spoke of unity. It is not an “R” or “D” issue, community and fighting against hate and helping our fellow neighbors is simply the right and moral thing to do. While the morning was very powerful Reverend Dr. Reynolds said something that truly stuck with me. She said “We need to not simply see something and say something it’s time to do something.” Acts of kindness are what makes community. The action of standing up against hate when it happens can truly make a difference.
We need to act. I am blessed to be Mayor of this great City. We are very fortunate to have an amazing Staff and Police Department who are keeping us safe. We have not had to live through protests, acts of violence and extremism that we are seeing globally. I have and continue to say we all need to stand up and correct misinformation that has been pushed by propaganda. The same tropes that have been pushed for centuries. We all can simply say that it is a lie. If you are not sure of the facts reach out to groups like ADL so you can check the facts.
I typically do not write about my family, and I am not going to start now but need to share a family ground rule we have. If we are around our dinner table, we can talk about anything. If we have guests in the house for a special occasion, there is an unwritten rule that we avoid politics. This rule is for our kids’ houses as well. Well, I broke the rule this past Sunday. As the saying goes, there is a time and place for everything. It was not the place, but it was time.
I was sitting around the table with a group of my daughters’ friends and neighbors. We began to speak about WWII and Vietnam. The WWII conversation evolved into how the USA military fought and were liberators. As a Board Member of the
Make Water Safety Part Of Your Memorial Day Weekend Plans
As Memorial Day weekend kicks off the unofficial start of summer, many families will head to the beach, pool, or boat to enjoy the long holiday weekend. While spending time in the water is a great way to cool off and celebrate, it’s also important to make water safety a priority.
Florida continues to lead the nation in drowning deaths among children ages 1 to 4, and tragedies can happen quickly and quietly, often in the time it takes to answer a text message or step away for just a moment. Drowning is preventable, and simple precautions can save lives.
Whether you’re spending the weekend at the beach, relaxing poolside or gathering with family and friends near the water, remember to use multiple layers of protection and keep a close watch on children at all times. Know the Signs After a Water Emergency
Even after someone has been pulled from the water, complications can still occur. Inhaling water can cause breathing difficulties later, even if the person initially seems okay. If someone experiences a near-drowning incident and later develops coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, unusual tiredness or changes in behavior, seek medical attention immediately. Or call: 9-1-1.

Water Safety Tips for a Safer Summer
• Keep constant eyes on children around water. Active supervision is one of the most important safety measures.
• Designate a “Water Watcher” during gatherings or parties. Rotate the responsibility so one adult is always focused on watching the water.
• Swim in areas w/lifeguards whenever possible.
• Never swim alone and always let someone know where you are.
• Secure home pools with fences, self-closing gates and alarms.
• Follow posted warning flags and “No Swimming” signs at beaches and waterways.
• Avoid distractions like phones while supervising children in or near the water.

Holocaust Documentation and Education Center I said, “We need to remind our children how important as Americans it is to unite against hate. Just like now with the fight against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.” One of the neighbors chimed in and said what about the genocide in Gaza. Well, my daughter gasped and I know she was thinking well here we go!
I know there is and sadly will always be antisemitism. This however is where I draw the line. I explained all that I have studied. I asked have you been to Israel? Have You been to Saudi Arabia? Have you even been to the Middle East? He said, Well what about all the children that have been killed in Gaza? All the suffering caused by Israel before the war.
I shared no they were put in harms way by Hamas. Israelis left their homes in Gaza. Yes, there always have been strained relations but it was made worse when Hamas took over. Rather than investing in people and their community they started digging tunnels, stockpiling arms and still continued to send in terrorists to Israel. They attacked, killed, raped, kidnapped entire families. I asked what about the years of bombing before that. Then it was they were not making a bomb and even if they did, they would not use it against Iran. He went even further
that Israel will drop a bomb before them and US should be out of the war. I asked, “so that is your solution? His wife actually came to his defense that they were not enriching for a bomb. I explain that they absolutely were. I explained the levels of enrichment and there is not a domestic need for over 60% enrichment. I said while you can have an opinion and certainly can and will disagree, they cannot change the facts. I shared that Israel does not want war they want peace. They are a democracy and there are many religions coexisting in Israel. I have seen it. This whole incident proved to me how much more work we have to do. Antisemitism is moving like wildfire. People are so misinformed on history. I continue to do my part in correcting misinformation. Most importantly, trying to unite our community.
South Florida is certainly safer than most communities, but hate is still there.

This National Nurses Month, the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Foundations are highlighting one of the Foundations’ longestrunning nursing awards and its most recent recipi ent.
The Foundations recently awarded the Jessie Salone Student Nurse Scholarship to Macy Grimsrud, a Fort Lauderdale Resident and Emergency Care Technician in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Grimsrud is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Nova Southeastern University and plans to practice as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Nurse after graduating.
The Jessie Salone Nursing Education Fund was established in 2006 by Michael Salone in honor of his mother, Jessie Salone, who served as a nurse at Memorial Regional Hospital from 1963 until her retirement in 1992. Inspired by the care and compassion she dem onstrated throughout her nearly 30year career, the fund supports nurses who exemplify those same values — either those who have completed their first year of nursing study or nurses continuing their education. Administered through Memorial Foundation, the scholarship is open to nurses and nursing students work ing anywhere within Memorial Healthcare System, including Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where Grimsrud serves as an emergency care technician.
“This honor means more to me than a scholarship,” Grimsrud wrote in her acceptance letter to the Salone family. “It represents the legacy of Nurse Jessie and the principles she upheld throughout her career at Memorial. To me, this scholarship feels like a mes sage from Nurse Jessie herself, who continues to serve as a mentor and reminder of why we do what we do.”
For Grimsrud, the recognition reflects more than personal achievement. It also reflects her pride in the nursing profession and excitement to join its ranks.

About Memorial Healthcare System
“Working alongside nurses for the past five years has been both inspiring and motivating,” Grimsrud wrote in her scholarship application. “I am continually encouraged by their resilience, advocacy and dedication to patient care. Each shift reinforces my desire to join their profession and contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes.”
Grimsrud was recommended for the scholarship by her educational leader at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. She holds a 3.9 GPA, is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and earned a place on the dean’s list. The scholarship will go toward her remaining tuition at Nova Southeastern University.
Before joining Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in August 2025, Grimsrud earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Human Physiology from the University of Iowa and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Room Technician in Iowa. She earned her Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification in 2025.
Beyond her work in acute care, Grimsrud has said she hopes to contribute to community-based preventative care, including free health clinics, wellness checkups for new mothers, and mental health crisis response.
