Spring is officially here, and while pets are as eager as their owners to experience the great outdoors, the season of new life means the return of several plant-related toxins that can leave your pet regretting their promenade through the garden.

Dr. Lance Wheeler, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, educates owners on the importance of safeguarding pets against outdoor poisons during the spring season.

Season’s Toxic Greetings

With spring’s warmer weather, pets spend more time outside and out of their owners’ direct sight.

“During this time, many new plants begin to grow and people often use fertilizers, pesticides, and garden products in their yards,” Wheeler said. “These things can pose a risk to pets if ingested or if they come into contact with the skin. Pets may chew on plants, drink from ponds, or explore areas where chemicals — such as rodent poison — were recently used, which increases the risk of poisoning.”

Dogs and cats are often more susceptible to chemical-related afflictions than people because they walk directly on treated surfaces and then groom them-

Creating Jobs, Growth & Water

Solving One Of The World’s Most Urgent And Overlooked Challenges: Access To Clean, Reliable Drinking Water

Revolutionary and Americanmade in South Florida, Altitude Water’s Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) transform humidity in the air into clean, dependable drinking water.

Following its recognition as Sustainable Water Company of the Year by Prestige Awards, Lauderdale Lakes’ Altitude Water is rapidly strengthening its position in the Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) industry. The company’s primary headquarters is set for significant expansion in the coming months, supported by the leasing of a larger facility designed to accommodate upcoming initiatives, projects, and community commitments.

“This is an amazing time for our company - with growth comes the opportunity to wel-

come more people into the Altitude family,” stated CEO and Founder Jeff Szur. “Our distributor and Architectural team members at M2 Holistic Studio are designing the production lines and the layouts in the new space to increase efficiency.”

“Additionally, we have key plans in motion to bring to life a true rarity in the industry - a net zero carbon sustainable and resilient State-Of-The-Art Water bottling facility derived only from sustainable materials, removing the dangerous micro plastics rife in leading brands. This plant will open a plethora of job opportunities, amplifying our belief in keeping work here in America rather than overseas.”

In the last several years, Altitude Water has made incredible strides, launching a one-of-a-

kind Disaster Relief Trailer for use during Hurricane Season (which is capable of providing pure drinking water, solar power energy, cell service, and internet service to in-need communities) as well as has supplied clean water to communities in Cameroon, Maui, Colombia, and Ecuador. In 2025, the company also announced an innovative partnership with RM Design Pro, M2 Holistic Studio, and PHI Cubed to develop a first-of-itskind hybrid explorer yacht (SXR 75 XLC) that will become the first U.S.-built vessel to generate its own drinking water directly from air using fully integrated AWGs, with M2 Holistic Studio being involved in Altitude’s new factory expansion.

Additionally, Jeff Szur is in the Top 5 in his category of the 2026

‘Entrepreneur of Impact’ competition hosted by Entrepreneur Magazine, with the water tech innovator vowing to share the $25,000 prize money with NonProfit partners in the event of victory. The first $5,000 will be gifted to the school in Colombia’s Tierra Bomba, a community that previously received three AWG units in the past for local families and children. The plan? To equip the current units with solar power to enhance water production and security.

“At Altitude Water, we believe water is a basic human right - no one deserves to suffer from lack of access, and safe drinking water shouldn’t be seen as a luxury when we have the power to give it to those in need,” added Szur. “We may not have won the

Inside The Brain:

South Florida PBS Health Channel Explores Memory, Resilience, And Mental Health In New Special Programming

The South Florida PBS Health Channel is bringing the conversation around Brain Health and Mental Well-Being to the forefront with two powerful programs: The Resilient Brain and Memory & the Mind: What Science Tells Us About Brain Health Town Hall. Together, these specials explore the science of the brain while offering meaningful insight into how Mental Health is shaped, supported, and strengthened throughout life.

The Resilient Brain is a compelling documentary that dives into the extraordinary adaptability of the human brain. Through the voices of scientists, patients, and families, the film reveals how the brain responds to trauma, Neurological Disease, and life’s most complex challenges. From Veterans recovering from traumatic brain injuries to children with rare neurological conditions and older adults navigating Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s, the documentary highlights resilience as both a biological and emotional force. As the film underscores, understanding the brain is key to understanding ourselves. As Dr. Ken Miller of Columbia University’s Zuckerman Mind, Brain & Behavior Institute notes, “If you want to

selves, which can lead to ingestion of these substances.

“If you apply products to your lawn, always review the product label carefully to determine whether they are toxic to pets,” Wheeler said. “Some products may only be harmful under certain conditions, so it is important to follow all label instructions closely.

“Even if a product is not explicitly labeled as toxic to pets, it is still a good idea to do additional research or contact a resource such as the Animal Poison Control Center to confirm safety,” Wheeler said. “If you use a lawn care service, be sure to inform them that you have pets and request that they avoid using products that could be harmful.” When there is any uncertainty, a safe approach is to keep pets off treated areas until after the lawn has been thoroughly watered and allowed to fully dry, according to Wheeler.

In addition, as many as 25% of pet owners who maintain gardens may have toxic plants that they do not know are toxic unless they have already done the research, according to Wheeler.

Among the non-garden variety toxic plants that owners should keep an eye out for are:

• Sago palms

•

understand who we are, then you want to understand the brain.” This perspective is echoed throughout the documentary, with experts emphasizing both the mystery and promise of Neuroscience. Dr. James Galvin of the University of Miami adds, “The next great mystery to be solved is why the brain does what it does, why people develop diseases of the brain and what we can do to make a difference.”

The documentary also reinforces the importance of prevention and lifestyle in maintaining Brain and Mental Health. “If you’re trying to prevent Dementia, manage your Vascular Health: manage your Blood Pressure, your Cholesterol, your Thyroid Disease, your Obesity, your diet, your exercise—all of that,”explains Dr. Raphael Wald, Neuropsychologist at Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care. These insights highlight how closely Physical Health and Mental Well-Being are intertwined.

Viewers are also reminded of the personal impact of Brain Science. As Dr. Nicole Baganz of FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute shares, “Understanding the Brain Science helped me understand myself and my family.” Meanwhile, Dr.

“While not all mushrooms are toxic, it is very difficult to reliably distinguish toxic from non-toxic species,” Wheeler said.

“For this reason, it is safest to prevent exposure to any type of mushroom.”

For further questions regarding potentially toxic material and plants, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is available for consultation at: 1 (888) 426-4435.

Impact Of Consumption

Some plants contain chemicals that can damage important organs, greatly hindering a pet’s health and well-being.

“When a pet chews or eats these plants, the toxin can quickly enter the body and cause serious illness,” Wheeler said. “For example, some plants cause severe liver damage, while others can affect the nervous system or heart. The severity depends on the type of plant and how much was eaten.”

Signs of poisoning can vary depending on the toxin, but common symptoms include:

• Vomiting

• Diarrhea

• Weakness or lethargy

• Tremors or seizures

• Trouble walking or unusual behavior

• Difficulty breathing

• Increased drooling

“In some cases, pets may appear normal at first, but the toxin may still be causing damage inside the body,” Wheeler said. “As that damage progresses, symptoms may not appear until hours or even days later.”

It is also important to note that cats

Gavin Rumbaugh of the Wertheim UF Scripps Institute points to the field’s rapid evolution: “I think we’re now where Cancer Biology was 25 years ago.”

Complementing the documentary, Memory & the Mind: What Science Tells Us About Brain Health Town Hall brings together leading experts for an engaging and informative discussion on memory, cognitive aging, and brain resilience. Hosted by Pam Giganti, the town hall features:

• Daphna Shohamy, PhD – Director & CEO, Zuckerman Institute, Columbia University

• Paul Kenny, PhD – Director, The Friedman Brain Institute, Mount Sinai Health System, NY

• Vidhya Rangaraju, PhD – Research Group Leader, Rangaraju Lab, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience

During the discussion, experts emphasize the unprecedented pace of discovery in Brain Science. “We by far know more now than we ever did before, and it’s a time of rapid expansion of knowledge and an enormous amount of discovery,” says Dr. Shohamy.

The town hall also focuses on action-

and dogs can react differently to toxins. Because pets process toxins differently, something that is safe for dogs can still be very dangerous for cats.

“Cats are especially sensitive to lilies, which can cause severe kidney damage,” Wheeler said. “Dogs are more likely to ingest outdoor chemicals because they explore and eat many things they find. Cats may also be more sensitive to certain medications or topical products.”

With this in mind, owners must remain aware of the types of plants that their pets may be exposed to in their homes, yards, or along their walking paths.

“I would encourage any pet owner to use phone applications to identify all plants in their immediate environment and determine whether or not they are toxic to their owned species,” Wheeler said.

Seeking Help

If you suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous, it is vital to act immediately. “Remove your pet from the source of the toxin,” Wheeler said. “Call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or a pet poison helpline immediately. Do not try to treat your pet at home unless a veterinarian instructs you to do so. If possible, bring the product label, plant sample, or packaging to the veterinarian.” The earlier an animal receives treatment, the greater chance of recovery. “The type of treatment depends on the toxin and the pet’s symptoms,” Wheeler said. “Veterinarians may induce vomiting; give activated charcoal to prevent further absorption; provide intravenous (IV) fluids for support; treat symptoms such as seizures, tremors, or abnor-

able steps people can take to support their Brain and Mental Health. “It’s hard to overstate the positive impact of exercise on Brain Function,” notes Dr. Paul Kenny, while Dr. Vidhya Rangaraju highlights the critical role of rest: “Sleep is very important. It’s important to consolidate memories, clear waste, and recharge the mitochondria so that brain cells can be healthy.”

As Mental Health continues to be a national priority, these programs provide viewers with both knowledge and empowerment, connecting cutting-edge neuroscience with everyday actions that support emotional and cognitive well-being. mal heart rhythms; or use specific antidotes when available.” Above all, the priority is to stabilize the patient and help the body remove or neutralize the toxin.

Preventing An Emergency

The greatest help an owner can provide is ensuring their pet’s environment — whether at home or away — is safe, and the best way to do that is by developing a plan of action in case an emergency arises.

Pet owners can lower the risk of poisoning by:

• Learning which plants in their home and yard are toxic to pets

• Keeping medications, chemicals, and cleaning products out of reach

• Avoiding letting pets drink from ponds or standing water

• Keeping pets away from compost piles and mushrooms

• Using pet-safe lawn and garden products when possible

• Supervising pets when they are outside Spring is bountiful with beautiful greenery and a growing excitement for gathering in backyards, dog parks, or on trails. While enjoying the fresh beginnings, owners should also become familiar with plant toxins so their furry friends can play safely this spring.

The Poppy Project To Honor Veterans And Support Mental Health Services

Water, visit: https:// altitudewaterusa.com//

About Altitude Water

Altitude Water is an award-winning leading manufacturer of several types of Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) from residential and light commercial machines to heavy duty military-grade machines that produce water anytime, anywhere, as well as ozone purification systems for purifying ground and rainwater. Since 2008, Founder and CEO Jeff Szur has dedicated his career to the AWG sector, and in 2009 he developed the first ozone purification machine in Trinidad before bringing his knowledge to the U.S. market. For nearly 20 years, Szur has studied extensively the dangers of water scarcity, a rising global problem impacting over 4 billion people globally, as well as health problems caused by plastic in our environment and the micro plastics in our water supply. A leader in innovation, Szur has developed the Disaster Relief Trailer for use during hurricane season which is capable of providing pure drinking water, solar power energy, cell service, and internet service to in-need communities.

Altitude Water has partnered with nonprofits Aquavera, Jean Felicien Gacha Foundation, and L’Oreal Women Sustainability Fund, Footprint Project, Compassion International, World Vision, Grassroots Aid Partnership, Noah’s Arc, Amy Grant, and Vince Gill, as well as, forprofit companies IFSC, African Solar Generation, and numerous suppliers.

Henderson Behavioral Health (HBH) will introduce an exciting public art program, The Poppy Project, a visual display of remembrance and patriotism which honors veterans while raising awareness and funds for critical mental health services. Five-and 6-foot striking fiberglass poppy flowers will be presented in a garden setting as a remembrance of those who protect and serve our country and a memorable photo experience. The public art unveiling is set for 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, at Tunnel Top Plaza in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, located at on Las Olas Boulevard and Southeast 6th Avenue, followed by other pop-up gardens being planned at select Fort Lauderdale parks and popular venues which will be announced at a later date.

“The Poppy Project is a powerful way for our community to come together in remembrance of those who have patriotically served our country and to honor them by supporting vital mental health programs and services,” said Dr. Steve Ronik, CEO of Henderson Behavioral Health. “Through this initiative, we are not only honoring service and sacrifice but also ensuring that those who have served and continue to protect our country receive the care they deserve.”

The campaign will continue throughout the year, aligning with nationally recognized holidays including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. Also, the project will incorporate public art installations, sponsorship opportunities, special events and a virtual legacy wall where families can honor loved ones who have served.

Inspired by the poppy’s historical

significance as a symbol of sacrifice, rooted in the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” and later adopted as a national emblem of remembrance, The Poppy Project brings this tradition to life in a local and meaningful way.

Funds raised will directly support Henderson Behavioral Health’s VICTORY Program (Veterans in Counseling to Obtain Recovery), which provides free Mental Health services to veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and their families, including outreach and education across South Florida, workshops addressing mental health challenges impacting military families, and individual and relationship therapy offered both in clinical settings and within the community.

“Deliciously savage satire.” – The Guardian

Described as a “comedy of manners…without the manners,” this Broadway hit examines the fragile veneer of civility in American society. The play centers on two sets of well-to-do parents who meet in a Brooklyn apartment to discuss a playground altercation between their 11-year-old sons, one of whom hit the other with a stick, knocking out two teeth. What begins as a polite, civilized conversation to resolve the situation quickly devolves into a night of namecalling, physical altercations and alcoholfueled hysteria. More relevant today than when it was first written, the play holds up a mirror to modern society, dealing with

the fragility of social etiquette, political polarization and the constant, distracting nature of modern technology. Cast completely with local actors and designers, Zoetic’s first play of the season promises to be as enlightening as it is entertaining.

United Way Broward’s Mayors’ Gala Raises Support

For Housing Initiatives And Community Impact

United Way Broward celebrated another successful Annual Mayors’ Gala on Saturday, April 25th, 2026, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, where influential community leaders, philanthropists and change makers gathered for a powerful evening dedicated to strengthening lives and advancing solutions to one of Broward County’s most pressing challenges: affordable housing.

This year’s gala spotlighted United Way Broward’s United for Housing initiatives and featured a major announcement that funds raised from the event will support housing initiatives, affordability efforts, and a building recently acquired by United Way Broward to help advance this work and expand impact for individuals and families in need.

The prestigious evening brought together more than 800 Broward County municipal officials, business leaders, community partners and supporters united by a shared commitment to building a stronger, more resilient Broward County. Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, dinner, and special live entertainment by Joey Fatone (NSYNC, television, film and Broadway). Attendees also watched three impactful videos highlighting real-life cases of families/individuals who have been supported through United Way Broward’s programs, offering a powerful look into the organization’s work in action. Several of the featured people were in attendance, making the experience even more meaningful and reinforcing the tangible difference these programs make within the community.

“The evening reflected the power of what is possible when a com munity comes together around solu tions,” said Kathleen Cannon, President & CEO of United Way Broward. “The support generated through this event will help expand efforts to address housing stability and affordability while strengthening the foundation of support so many Broward residents rely upon.”

The evening also highlighted the broader impact of United Way Broward through more than 130 programs focused on housing stability, financial security, health and youth opportunities.

Serving as Event Co-Chairs, Allison and Andy Cagnetta, Founder of Transworld Business Advisors of Florida, helped lead the evening’s philanthropic efforts, reinforcing the community-wide commitment needed to address housing challenges and support long-term solutions.

“This evening proved what’s possible when a community unites behind a shared mission,” said CoChair Andy Cagnetta, Founder of Transworld Business Advisors of Florida. “The impact of that collective commitment will be felt across Broward.”

United Way Broward’s Annual Mayors’ Gala continues to serve as one of Broward’s signature philanthropic events, bringing together public and private sector leaders to invest in solutions that strengthen the community for generations to come.

TROBBU Tulum: Redefining The Private Villa Vacation Experience

Tucked into the lush greenery of Tulum, just minutes from the Caribbean Sea, TROBBU Tulum offers a version of the destination that feels intentionally removed from the usual noise. It is not a traditional resort experience. It is quieter, more private, and designed to feel like stepping into your own secluded world.

Opened in February 2025, the allinclusive property introduces a boutique concept centered around fully appointed villas rather than standard hotel rooms. Each residence is designed to balance contemporary architecture with the surrounding jungle environment, creating a setting that feels both elevated and grounded. The result is a stay that leans into space, calm, and a slower pace.

The villas themselves are the core of the experience. Each one features three bedrooms and three and a half baths, along with an infinity pool, a spacious terrace lined with loungers, and a bar and grill area that makes it easy to settle in for the day without leaving. Inside, the layout is equally intentional, with a full kitchen, living area, and design details that prioritize comfort without sacrificing style. What stands out most is how the property manages to feel both expansive and intimate at the same time. Whether traveling with family, friends, or as a couple looking for privacy, the layout naturally adapts to different types of stays.

A Stay That Blends Independence with Service

While the villas offer the freedom of a private residence, the service structure ensures guests are never left to figure things out on their own. Each stay includes access to a butler who can coordinate everything from in-villa experiences to off-property excursions.

Activities range from casual and social, like pizza-making and mixology classes, to wellness-focused options and visits to nearby cenotes. Guests can shape their itinerary as much or as little as they want, which reinforces the property’s flexibility.

Dining follows a similar philosophy. Guests can enjoy the all-inclusive food and beverage program that covers meals throughout the day. The ability to dine either privately in the villa or in shared spaces adds another layer of customization, depending on the mood of the trip.

The Vision Behind the Experience

TROBBU Tulum is part of the broader TROBBU Boutique Collection, a hospitality concept built around the idea that luxury should feel personal, not standardized. The brand focuses on properties that reflect their location, emphasizing design, nature, and cultural connection over traditional hotel structure.

Behind the concept is Elias Barbosa, whose background spans more than two decades in construction and large-scale hospitality development. Having worked on major hotel brands across Mexico and the Caribbean, his shift toward a boutique model reflects a deliberate move to create something more tailored and immersive. The approach is evident in how the property is run. The emphasis is not on volume or spectacle, but on creating a sense of place. Each detail, from the architecture to the service style, is designed to feel thoughtful rather than formulaic. I recently connected with Barbosa to discuss his distinctive approach to hospitality. Here’s a bit of that conversation.

MK: What makes TROBBU Tulum a true stand out?

EB: TROBBU Tulum’s defining feature is that it is the first collection of all-inclusive luxury villas in the entire destination. Guests enjoy a balance of complete privacy within their own space and an intimate atmosphere in common areas, as the property only has 10 villas. Our culinary experience is another standout of the property. Guests can indulge in breakfast,

lunch, dinner, and snacks in their private villa or in shared areas. These culinary offerings include items such as octopus with chimichurri, steak with pepper sauce, and Neapolitan dough pizza.

MK: Who is the ideal guest for TROBBU Tulum?

EB: We designed TROBBU Tulum to appeal to a wide range of travelers including families, groups of friends, and couples. These visitors value the privacy of having their own bedroom and appreciate how effortless it is to all gather in the living room, kitchen, and private pool within each villa. We recently introduced included wellness experiences such as rise & root yoga, sculpt & strength pilates, training & kickboxing, deep sound bath, Mayan cacao circle, little yogui for kids, and more. There are also activities avail able at an additional cost including mind ful ice immersion, floating sound meditation, tea and tarot reading, and more. These offerings further position us as the ideal destination for wellness travelers and retreats.

MK: What are the top three things that set the property apart?

EB: We offer private and individual service to every single guest and make them feel like they are the only ones staying there. Wellness and culinary experiences are included, and we also provide food and drinks directly to the villa, creating a seamless and highly personalized stay.

MK: What is the design philosophy behind the villas?

EB: The villas were designed to blend harmoniously with their natural surroundings, inviting guests to reconnect with nature. The design prioritizes natural light through large windows and expresses luxury through refined materials such as parotta wood, marble stone, and Sukabumi stone in the private pools, all chosen to reflect the spirit of the destination.

MK: How do the villas create a seamless, elevated stay experience?

EB: Our personalized service begins one week before guests arrive, with every detail carefully arranged through our concierge to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience from the moment you reach your destination. Offering all the comforts of an all-inclusive stay, but in the privacy of your own resi dence, each reservation includes food, beverages, and wellness experiences, creating a stay that feels both effortless and indulgent.

MK: What can guests expect from the food and beverage experience?

arcade, and a boutique spa, further enhancing the range of experiences available to guests.

MK: What makes Tulum a unique setting for TROBBU?

EB: It creates a perfect scenario that allows guests to fully enjoy wellness sessions while reconnecting with nature, thanks to the balance of jungle surroundings and proximity to the Caribbean.

MK: How does the service approach

either.

Even beyond the wonder that is Tulum, TROBBU will be expanding heavily in the next few years across multiple continents. For a destination that often leans into energy and activity, TROBBU offers a different perspective. One that is quieter, more intentional, and centered around the idea that luxury does not always need to be loud to be memorable.

Solving Broward’s Trash Crisis

Solid Waste Authority Approves 40-Year Master Plan To Solve The Crisis In Broward County

On April 17, 2026, the Governing Board of the Solid Waste Authority of Broward County (SWA) approved a 40-year Solid Waste Management and Recycling Master Plan (Master Plan). The approval set in motion a 120-day window for the SWA’s 28 member municipalities and Broward County to vote “Yes” to put the Master Plan into action.

“This is a once-in-a-generation chance to solve Broward’s trash crisis,” said Mike Ryan, Chair of the SWA’s Executive Committee and Governing Board and Mayor of the City of Sunrise. “One city can’t solve this alone. Together, we can secure the lowest and best price to responsibly recycle and dispose of our trash and stop relying so heavily on landfilling and burning.”

The stakes are high. In Broward County more than five million tons of trash is generated each year, about 20,000 pounds every minute, and the landfill and wasteto-energy facility are almost maxed out.

Countywide, the recycling rate is low (38%) well below other counties and the state’s 75% goal. As the population increases, so will the amount of trash, and the current fragmented system will cost residents and businesses more in the future. The Master Plan charts a course to negotiate better pricing by combining trash tonnage, expanding and increasing recycling, recovering valuable items from the waste stream that could be reused locally and beneficially, and significantly decreasing dependence on landfilling and waste-to-energy through waste reduction, diversion, and reuse. The Master Plan also supports continuous public education and outreach to engage residents, businesses, and visitors to produce better economical outcomes.

The SWA’s coordinated approach makes financial sense. By working together, municipalities will gain stronger bargaining power, “most favored nation” pricing, and long-term cost stability.

“This is our chance to control our economic destiny,” said Ryan. “By sticking together, we can keep the cost to responsibly manage our trash as low as possible for our residents and businesses. We cannot afford to let this opportunity fail.”

Following the Governing Board’s approval, attention now shifts to commission chambers across Broward. Enough of the 28 member municipalities and the County must vote “yes” prior to August 14th, 2026, to move the Master Plan forward. On April 23rd, 2026, the City of Coconut Creek, the Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, and the Town of Southwest Ranches were the first three SWA members to hold a vote and all three commissions voted unanimously to move the Master Plan forward.

As members of the SWA, cities will still control their own waste and recycling collection services and each have a seat on the SWA’s Governing Board. “If this gets approved, the SWA remains active, we

implement the Master Plan, and we abandon the failed fragmented system we have now,” explained Ryan. Residents can view the schedule to see when their City Commission will consider the item at: https://browardswa.org/ master-plan-voting-schedule/. Everyone can do something now to get involved and show their support. Sign the pledge to reduce waste and recycle right at: www.browardrecycles.org.

About the Solid Waste Authority of Broward County The Solid Waste Authority of Broward County is a partnership between Broward County and 28 member cities working toward a sustainable, long-term waste management strategy. Committed to innovation and environmental stewardship, the SWA focuses on reducing waste, increasing recycling, and implementing smart solutions for a cleaner future. The Art Of Waterfront Dining At Kaluz Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is not short on waterfront restaurants, but very few manage to translate location into a fully realized dining experience. At Kaluz Fort Lauderdale, the setting is not just a backdrop. It becomes part of the rhythm of the meal itself.

Located directly along the Intracoastal Waterway at 3300 East Commercial Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308 Kaluz has built a reputation as one of South Florida’s most compelling dining destinations. Boats glide past just feet away from the dockside patio. Sunsets cast a warm glow across the water. The energy shifts seamlessly from daytime ease to evening sophistication. It is the kind of place where a casual lunch can evolve into a lingering dinner without ever feeling forced.

What makes Kaluz stand out is not just the view. It is the way the entire experience is constructed around it. The restaurant blends Modern American cuisine with an upscale but approachable atmosphere, offering a balance that is increasingly rare in a market that often leans too far in one direction or the other.

The menu reflects that same philosophy. It is both refined and accessible, with standout dishes like Chilean SeaBass, Filet Mignon, Danish Ribs, and the widely talked about Fire Grilled Artichoke. There is an emphasis on Fresh Seafood and Prime Cuts, supported by a robust lineup of Handcrafted Cocktails, Wines, and Desserts that feel indulgent without being overdone.

Yet what truly defines Kaluz is consistency. It is a restaurant that knows exactly what it is and executes against that vision with precision.

To better understand how that experience comes together, Kaluz Restaurant’s Marketing Manager, Jacob Encarnacion, offers a behind the scenes look at what drives the brand and why the Fort Lauderdale location continues to lead the conversation.

MK: What are the top three things that set Kaluz Fort Lauderdale apart from its competition and other Kaluz locations?

JE: The three key things that set the popular Kaluz Restaurant Fort Lauderdale location apart from our other locations start with its unmatched Intracoastal setting. Positioned directly on the water, the restaurant offers sweeping views and an outdoor patio where guests dine just feet from the Intracoastal, creating an experience that feels immersive and almost cinematic, especially at sunset as boats pass by and the waterfront comes to life. Secondly, this is the original Kaluz location and the flagship where the brand was born. With more than 13 years of history, it established the foundation for Kaluz’s reputation and success, ultimately paving the way for the opening of three additional locations across South Florida. Lastly, the combination of elevated service, consistent culinary execution, and a commitment to daily fresh product delivery ensures a level of quality and hospitality that remains distinctive, not only within our sister restaurants but also in comparison to the broader Fort Lauderdale dining scene.

MK: Kaluz has built a reputation for balancing upscale polish with a relaxed waterfront vibe. How do you achieve that balance?

JE: At Kaluz, the balance comes down to being intentional in every layer of the guest experience so nothing feels staged or intimidating, even though the execution is highly polished. The design, lighting, and open waterfront views set an upscale tone without needing formality, allowing guests to feel like they are somewhere special while still comfortable enough to settle in. Service style and pacing are key. The goal is attentive, knowledgeable hospitality that is not intrusive, with teams trained to read each table and adjust based on what guests want. The menu reinforces this balance by offering ele-

vated dishes that remain approachable and versatile. Finally, the energy of the room ties everything together, with a lively bar and strong sunset crowd creating warmth and vibrancy.

MK: How does the Intracoastal location shape the guest experience?

JE: The way the Fort Lauderdale location sits along the Intracoastal Waterway makes it one of the most unique dining settings in the area, offering views that consistently leave a lasting impression. When paired with a thoughtfully executed menu, it creates a complete atmosphere that encourages guests to return. A major part of what makes it special is the ability for boats to dock directly at the restaurant, allowing guests to arrive and dine right off the water. This dock and dine element adds a level of accessibility and exclusivity that sets the location apart.

MK: How do you decide which dishes represent Kaluz’s Modern American identity?

JE: Kaluz Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale features a menu built around a balance of chef driven creativity, guest feedback, and real time performance data. Our in house chefs regularly develop new dishes, which are then evaluated before consideration for the menu. Guest feedback plays a major role as we track what resonates and observe ordering trends. We also rely on live performance data to track sales and consistency across service. This combination ensures the menu remains dynamic, approachable, and true to Kaluz’s Modern American style while offering something for every guest and occasion.

MK: Several dishes have become favorites. What makes them stand out?

JE: What makes these dishes stand out is the foundation of being a scratch kitchen, where nearly every component is made in house with careful attention to detail. The Pear and Prosciutto Flatbread combines Sweet Caramelized Pears, Savory Prosciutto, and Fig Balsamic Glaze for balance and contrast. The Thai Noodle and Shrimp Salad layers texture and brightness with Mango, Coconut, and Spicy Shrimp. The Bar Harbor Crab Cakes focus on high quality Jumbo Lump Crab with minimal filler. Together, these dishes reflect Kaluz’s balance of comfort and creativity through precise execution and quality ingredients.

MK: How do you elevate comfort foods like Truffled Mac and Cheese?

JE: My personal favorite is the Skirt Steak, featuring a perfectly seared outside cut finished with Chimichurri Sauce. It is served with Crispy Potato Wedges and a Fresh Arugula Salad, creating a balance of richness, freshness, and acidity. The Chimichurri enhances the natural char and tenderness, while the arugula adds contrast and the potatoes provide a hearty element.

MK: How do you maintain consistency across locations while allowing each to feel unique?

JE: We ensure consistency by building on experience from existing locations while maintaining high standards. Teams share feedback and refine operations while keeping the guest experience at the center. At the same time, each location reflects its own community and setting, whether it is the waterfront in Fort Lauderdale or other local environments.

MK: Any interesting history about the location?

ing peak hours. From appetizers like Sweet Ginger Calamari and Tuna Tartare to entrees like Cedar Plank Salmon and Bone-In Ribeye, the menu is designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes without losing cohesion. Even the sides, from Truffled Mac and Cheese to Creamed Spinach, are treated as essential components rather than afterthoughts.

Dessert closes the experience on a high note, whether it is the signature Banana Cake or a Classic Key Lime Pie that has become a take home favorite. In a market saturated with waterfront dining options, Kaluz Fort Lauderdale continues to distinguish itself by delivering not just a meal, but a fully realized experience. It is polished without being pretentious, lively without being overwhelming, and consistent in a way that keeps guests coming back.

For visitors and locals alike, it remains one of those rare places that manages to live up to its setting.

JE: The approach is about elevating, not reinventing, familiar comfort foods. With dishes like the Truffled Mac and Cheese, the goal is to refine a classic by adding depth and richness while keeping it rec ognizable and approachable. The creamy base remains central, while the addition of Truffle introduces an elevated finish that feels indulgent. It complements entrees like Steak and helps complete the dining experience.

MK: What role do desserts play in the experience?

JE: Desserts complete the Kaluz dining experience by delivering indulgence and a memorable final impression. Because we are a scratch kitchen, presentation and execution matter just as much as flavor. Portions are intentionally satisfying, rein forcing the idea of ending on a high note. Items like the Going Bananas Banana Cake provide a playful yet refined finish, while guest favorites like Key Lime Pie have become so popular that people purchase whole pies to take home.

Your Medicare Roadmap: What To Know Before You Turn 65

Sixty-five is more than a number. It’s a milestone. A moment to reflect on where you’ve been and look forward with confidence to what comes next. For millions of Americans, turning 65 also means unlocking one of the most valuable benefits you’ve earned: Medicare.

The best is still ahead, and it starts with knowing your options. The official source for Medicare information: www.Medicare.gov, is here to help with clear, trusted information.

The path to Medicare is not the same for everyone. Some people get Medicare automatically and others have to sign up. It depends on whether you are already getting Social Security. Either way, you’ll want to choose how you get your Medicare coverage.

Get information for your path at: www.Medicare.gov, where you can find out when and how to enroll and explore your coverage options. Understanding Your Medicare Coverage Options

When you first sign up for Medicare, you choose how to get your coverage. There are two main options: Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

Original Medicare is health coverage provided directly by the Federal Government. It has two parts:

• Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and home health care. Most people pay no premium for Part A.

• Part B (Medical Insurance) covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services (like screenings, vaccines and annual wellness visits) and durable medical equipment like wheelchairs and walkers. The standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month and is typically deducted from your Social Security check.

With Original Medicare, you can visit any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. You can also add optional coverage to help manage costs:

• Medigap (Supplemental Insurance) helps pay your share of Medicare costs.

• Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) helps pay for medications.

Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare that provides Part A and Part B and is offered by private insurers approved by Medicare.

5 Steps to Enroll with Confidence

1. Use official sources. Go to: www.Medicare.gov. Or call: 1 (800) MEDICARE for step-by-step, personalized guidance on coverage and enrollment.

2. Start early. You don’t have to wait until your birthday. Explore your options now so you’re ready when your enrollment window opens.

3. Know your enrollment path. Your path depends on your circumstances –some people are automatically enrolled and some are not. There are unique steps for people who are still working.

4. Avoid late enrollment penalties.

Missing your enrollment window can result in a permanent premium penalty for both Part B and Part D. Signing up on time protects your wallet for years to come.

5. Compare plans and save.

At: www.Medicare.gov, you can compare plan costs side-by-side, based on the specific drugs you take. A quick comparison could save you money each year. You can also confirm your current doctors are in-network before you choose a plan.

Turning 65 is a milestone worth celebrating and it’s the perfect time to focus on what matters most: your health and well-being. That includes eating well, exercising and making sure you have health insurance that fits your needs. There’s no one-size-fits-all plan. What’s important is finding an option that works for you and your health and financial needs.

Start your journey at: www.Medicare.gov – your roadmap to a healthier and confident future.
