Living up to a commitment to “Go Green” and become as energy efficient as possible, the City of Hallandale Beach was honored last week with the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Plaque for the new B.F. James Park and Swimming Pool. The design and operations exceed many guidelines leading to the gold award presented by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The City met or exceeded standards in water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, choice of construction materials among other standards. ‘CLICK IT - OR TICKET’ • Hollywood Police joins statewide initiative to encourage drivers to Buckle Up - It’s the law! HOLLYWOOD - In an effort to increase safety belt usage among Florida motorists, the Hollywood Police Department has joined law enforcement statewide in the “Click It or Ticket Florida” initiative. Now through May 31, 2015, Hollywood police will show zero tolerance for unrestrained motorists. Unfortunately, too many Floridians still choose not to wear their safety belts. In 2013, 54% of male passenger vehicle occupants in fatal crashes were unrestrained, compared to 41% of females not restrained. That is what happens when a powerful system still feeds off the energy of waters that are getting warmer. Hurricane season runs from June until the end of November, and while it may get old to go through those much important checklists every year, they are indeed life-saving and a must for anyone who lives in south Florida. "As someone who grew up and raised my family here, I tend to pay a lot more attention to hurricane season more than ever before," Hollywood resident Johnny Harris said. "I have a house and property and have a lot at stake if we do get hit." Hurricane season does not go by without plenty of warning and preparation. Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Dania Beach,
Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Bal Harbor, Surfside and North Miami Beach have events that center on the upcoming storm season and how to be prepared. Many entice residents to attend these hurricane preparedness events with prizes such as generators and supplies. Living in a coastal area, evacuations are a huge part of being ready and listening to what officials say about what to do. Remember, as we found out last summer - when Hallandale Beach ran a "mock" hurricane drill, being ready is all about getting back and running quicker after a storm hits. BEING PREPARED
While we understand that there are so many people in our coverage area who have been through hurricanes, there are new residents moving to our slice of heaven all he time and there are things that they need to know - just in case! The Time to Prepare is NOW! Get a plan. The most important step is to identify your hurricane risk. Do you live in an evacuation zone? If so, you need to plan on where you and your family would ride out the storm if you are told to evacuate. Most people only need to evacuate a few miles from the coast to avoid the dangers of storm surge. Find a friend or relative that lives outside the storm surge evacuation zone and have a plan to ride out the storm with them. You should also establish a family communications plan in case you are not together when you need to evacuate. Once a person under-

A disaster safety plan is a comprehensive plan that identifies all of the steps a family needs to take before, during, and after a disaster to ensure maximum personal safety and property protection. These tips can help you plan ahead so you never have to face a storm unprepared: • Check your insurance coverage to make sure it reflects the current state of your home. Consider adding flood insurance and coverage for additional living expenses in case your home is uninhabitable after a storm. • Doing a home inventory can save you time and make filing a claim easier, ensuring you don’t forget anything. Document the contents of your home with a video camera or other home inventory tool. Keep receipts for valuable items and consider separate coverage for these things. • Protect your property by installing the following items in your home: Hurricane shutters or keep ¾ inch outdoor plywood boards for each window. If using boards, be sure to install anchors and predrill holes so you can put them up quickly. Head and foot bolts on doors for extra protection. Hurricane straps or clips to help hold the roof to the walls of your home. A safe room that can withstand high winds and flying debris.
Also, be sure to keep up with your landscaping; diseased and damaged tree limbs can become serious hazards in high-speed storm winds. • Stock your emergency supply kit with basic survival items. You’ll want to have a 2week supply of water and ready-to-eat, nonperishable food for every family member and pet. If you evacuate, you’ll want a 3-day supply of the same. Other items to add to your supply kit include: • Manual can opener • Essential medicines including eyeglasses and contact lenses • Personal hygiene items such as toilet paper, toothbrush and toothpaste • Change of clothing • Paper towels, hand sanitizer, and eating utensils • First-aid kit • Battery-powered flashlight and radio with extra batteries • Blankets, pillows and sleeping bags • Mosquito repellant and citronella candles • 2 coolers—one for food, one for ice • Plastic tarp for roof/window repairs and tools • Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members • Have an established evacuation plan to help reduce stress. If you don’t have transporta-
tion of your own, make arrangements now with friends or family members and don’t forget about the pets! You want to make sure the whole family is covered, so identify an out-of-state contact that everyone will call if separated and establish a meeting location at least 50 miles inland. • Gather important papers to take with you: - Driver’s license or personal ID Social security card. - Proof of residence (deed, lease or utility bills). - Insurance policies (home, auto, flood, wind). - Birth and marriage certificates Stocks, bond and other negotiable certificates. - Wills, deeds, and copies of recent tax returns. - Personal checkbook and any unpaid bills. • Don’t take silly risks like running back into a home that’s been destroyed or refuse to evacuate when you’ve been ordered to, just to salvage material possessions. Things can be replaced, but people cannot. As the experts tell you every year - no matter if we have been affected by a hurricane or not recently - always take every warning serious. It could mean the difference between life or death.

Many get involved in this year’s Memorial Day salute By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - This years Memorial Day service was a special reminder that we still need to focus on our Veterans to make sure that they and their families are cared for. While the day is about remembering fallen soldiers we need to understand that our living Veterans still left a part of themselves on foreign soil, physically and mentally. We absolutely owe them all our gratitude. Saying the words “Happy Memorial Day” is not just enough. I was proud to join with Master of Ceremony Veteran Vice Mayor Bill Julian, Commissioner Anthony Sanders and our staff from Police, Fire and Parks Departments to make sure that we honor all of our Veterans. Joining us were many residents, Hallandale High JROTC and other community partners dedicated to improving the lives of Veterans. The United Way of Broward has a program called Mission United. Their goal is to wipe out Veteran homelessness. They are well on their way but need your help. They link clients to existing Veteran housing opportunities, support for Veterans at risk of losing housing and connect homeless Veterans to rapid rehousing opportunities. Our city held our annual forum to make sure that our residents keep informed. It has been 9 years since Wilma. That was the storm that took a turn for the worse. After 9 years of quiet, many people have become complacent. Do not be fooled. You need to be prepared! Everyone needs a plan. As a coastal city our barrier island is a mandatory evacuation zone even in a category 1-2 event. Every property East of US-1 is an evacuation zone in all other storms. If you live in a mobile home anywhere, you need to evacuate. Make sure you find shelter somewhere West. Many people make the mistake of hoping in the car and heading North. Just like Wilma, storms can shift and the last place you want to be is on the road. The first choice should be another family or friend’s home. If you need to go to a shelter, the closet one is off of Hallandale Beach Boulevard at Watkins Elementary School 3520 Southwest 52nd Avenue, Pembroke Park. For more information on special

This means a gallon of water per person and nonperishable food. You should also have medicines, first aid kits, radio, flashlights and other items to make you and your family as comfortable as possible. You may be without electricity for 3 or more days depending on the extent of the damages. It is the time now to make sure you and your loved ones are prepared. Hallandale Beach is getting ready to open our 4th Park in our Citywide Parks Master Plan. During our last commission meeting, we approved the operation/concession agreement for North Beach City Park to Hyde Beach Kitchen and Cocktails. As part of our negation agreement with Beachwalk development Related
Group committed to rebuild our Park Facility. The original construction commitment was $2.5 million dollars. The new city facility turned out to be worth over $6 million dollars after the build out at no cost to our taxpayers. The new public building will house on the first floor lockers, showers, massage service and a walk up food service. The second floor will house a restaurant with inside and out table service. The third floor will be a small plunge pool, bar and lounge area. On the beach there will be chair and umbrella rentals. All the services will be available to the public for a fee. To have access to amenities on the 1st and third floor, there will be a day pass for $50 dollars weekdays and $75 on weekends. This includes 10% off all food and beverage service, 20% on beach chairs, umbrellas and spa services. Hallandale Beach residents will receive 20% off on the day pass. Hallandale Beach residents will automatically receive 20% on chair rentals, spa services and 10% on food and beverages.
This private/public partnership, is not only about having our facility built and having discounts for our residents, it is also about revenues. For the right to be able to partner with the city in the concession, the city is guaranteed the first 5 years a minimum of $60,000 annually in revenue and 2.5% of all gross revenues from the vendor. This includes all profits from parking. In years 6 through 11, we will receive $6,000 per month plus 3% of gross revenues and years 12 to 30, $7,000 per month and 3.5 % of gross revenues. The agreement provides monthly reporting of receipts and auditing. Look out for the grand opening! 5-point travel checklist for you and your pets (BPT) - Did you know 30 million people travel with their pets each year? Whether by plane, train or automobile, if you're planning an upcoming trip with your furry family member, it's important to plan ahead to ensure you both stay safe and healthy while making memories that will last a lifetime. "Traveling with pets has never been more popular," says Dr. Christina Fernandez, Medical Director of the SGU Small Animal Clinic in Grenada and Associate Professor Emergency Critical Care at St. George's University. "To ensure you both have a wonderful time without experiencing unexpected hurdles and headaches, be proactive. A little forethought goes a long way to keep everyone safe and having fun." Dr. Fernandez suggests five simple steps to prepare when traveling with pets: PREVENT BUG BOTHERS Planning a trip to a cabin or lake home? These popular destinations are ideal for people traveling with pets, but being outdoors can mean lots of insects. Plan to visit your vet at least a month prior to your departure to discuss flea and tick treatments, as these can take several weeks to start working effectively. Especially if
your pet is not already receiving routine preventatives. SLATHER ON SUN PROTECTION Everyone wants great weather while on vacation, and sunny days are ideal for all types of activities. It's important to be careful, though, as too much sunshine is dangerous for both people and pets. Pack sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher for yourself but be aware that sun block sold for human use can be potentially toxic to your pet. Look for pet specific sun block instead or ask your veterinarian if there is a suitable product that could be used to protect your pet while having fun in the sun. While you're out, remember to wear light clothing, a hat and sunglasses. Always take frequent breaks in the shade with your pet to cool off. PROPERLY PREPARE PRESCRIPTIONS No matter where you're traveling, be sure to plan ahead and pack enough medication to last the entire duration of your trip. Properly label all medication for you and your pet, and consider carrying a written prescription from your doctor just in case you need a refill while away. Bottles can get lost, damaged or stolen, so having a
backup plan can be a lifesaver. If your pet has major medical conditions it's never a bad idea to request a copy of the pet's medical records to have with you, especially if you are going on longer trips. SNACKS STAVE OFF HUNGER Both you and your pet will need nourishment while traveling, so don't forget to pack snacks. Staying properly hydrated is important, too, making bottled water a must. If traveling by car, ice cubes are a mess-free treat for your pup. A few healthy snacks for you and a small bag of food for your pet will keep you fueled throughout any journey so you're ready to roll when you arrive at your destination. VERIFY PERFECTLY PLEASANT PET ACCOMMODATIONS If you're staying at a hotel or resort, verifying your reservations before leaving is always a smart step, yet when traveling with a pet it is even more important. The last thing you want is to arrive and find out they don't allow animals or all the animal-approved rooms are taken. Make a call now to provide peace of mind and avoid trouble later. "Vacationing with pets isn't a trend, it's something people will continue to do more

Edgard Zayas nears return to racing Edgard Zayas, who led the rider standings during the spring meet at Gulfstream before fracturing his right hand in late April, is nearing a return to the saddle, according to agent Tito Fuentes. Zayas, an Eclipse Award finalist in 2013 as one of the nation’s top apprentices, was injured when unseated by mount Gotachancetodance in an April 22 maiden claiming contest. The 3-yearold filly ducked in toward the rail while on the lead in the race, causing a chain reaction that also led to the unseating of fellow journeyman Manuel Aguilar, who did not suffer serious injury in the spill. Five weeks later, Zayas, whose injury did not require surgery, is preparing to have his cast removed. “His cast is coming off Wednesday,” Fuentes said. “He’ll probably start working some horses by [next] weekend. We’re planning on riding the first week of June, probably that weekend, possibly on the sixth or seventh. That’s the plan.” Zayas was the leading rider during the Gulfstream Park summer race meet, which began anew for 2015 on May 23. The Puerto Rican native also captured the riding title at the Fall Turf Festival last Nov. at Gulfstream Park West. Zayas has won 556 races from 2,952 starts in his career, including 58 wins so far in 2015. Gulfstream Park is a Stronach Group company, North America’s leading Thoroughbred racetrack owner/operator. Memorial Regional Hospital Achieves National Stroke Gold-Plus Award
HOLLYWOOD – The Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital has achieved two designations for its excellence in treatment and care of stroke patients, and for promoting a streamlined approach resulting in consistent positive outcomes for stroke patients from the moment of arrival in the emergency room. For the 12th year in a row, Memorial Regional Hospital’s multidisciplinary stroke team has achieved the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) Get With The Guidelines®Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award. In addition to this recognition, the Neuroscience Institute has achieved the highest level of designation known as the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Award. To receive the Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award, hospitals must reach a goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance with all Get With The GuidelinesStroke Achievement Measures for two or more consecutive years. They also must have achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight of the program’s quality measures. One of the
measures, for example, requires that 75 percent of patients must be diagnosed and treated within 60 minutes from time of arrival in the emergency room. Memorial Regional Hospital has met and exceeded the criteria. “When it comes to treating stroke, ‘time is brain,’” says Brijesh P. The guidelines feature a comprehensive system developed for rapid diagnosis to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the emergency department and treatment. Criteria specifies that
treatment within the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms has shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability. Memorial Regional Hospital has earned the award by consistently exceeding the stricter guidelines of diagnosis and treatment within 45 minutes of arrival in 50 percent of patients. The summer camp experience of a lifetime!
Once again, South Broward hosts exciting Pre-Engineering Camp and Video Game Design Camp HOLLYWOOD Summer camp is not what it used to be. Many camps are not just simply about “having fun” anymore. Camp owners are making a niche to provide specific skills that kids can use in the future as well as have fun. South Broward High School - located in Hollywood - will again come alive as kids learn about computer science, video games and engineering. For the last five years, South Broward has hosted a Pre-Engineering Camp and Video Game Design Camp as part of Hollywood's summer programs. Last summer they ran seven weeks of camp and five of them sold out. The camp is run by Darin Koch, who is a teacher and coach at the school. The camp is taught in his classroom, where he teaches Video Game Design and Computer Programming to high school students during the regular school year. "Eric Brown, with the City of Hollywood, and Olayemi Awofadeju (South Broward’s principal), were instrumental in
getting the camp going," said Koch. "Mr. Brown had the vision to let us transition from a Sports Camp that had dwindling numbers, to a Technology camp. Ms. Awofadeju’s goal is to have kids on the South Broward campus to see the cool things that we are doing here." Koch added: "She wants people to know about our new Cambridge program and our state of the art $4 million dollar pool. I want to fuel a desire to explore and design games as opposed to just playing them," said Darin Koch, a computer science teacher at South Broward who leads the three different kinds of camps. “Each camp has a beginner level and an advanced level." Another impressive thing about the camp is that "about half of the kids each week are returnees from the previous week or summer," Koch explained. "We group them so that they can move at as fast a pace as they can handle. One of the strengths of the camp is the student to counselor ratio of about 4 kids to
one counselor. My counselors are awesome. I have college students working and my best high school students volunteering. So there is plenty of help for any camper that needs it.” The camps are open to ages 7 to 12 and will cover the basics of computer programming. In Pre-Engineering, kids will learn about a rocket launch simulation program and use Minecraft to explore mechanical, nuclear and engineering projects. Koch said students will use what they learn to create engineering projects; such as amusement parks, farms and other structures that have selfsustaining energy sources. In a computer animation segment, campers will learn the basics of graphic design by using Photoshop. One student put his dad’s face on the incredible hulk last year. Another assignment is learning to create your own avatars and characters by students using their own imagination. He added that it is important to get some fresh air, so campers take a morning and afternoon

break outside and just “cut loose.” He says “I don’t think it’s healthy for anyone to be in front of a computer screen for too long without a break. We get out the jump ropes, the footballs, and soccer balls – go downstairs and burn some energy.” Koch says that there is a national movement funded by major players in the tech industry such as Bill Gates of Microsoft, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, and the family of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. That movement is called code.org and major money has been thrown at developing a class to encourage more minorities and females to learn computer science. Koch says “Whether you are coming to my summer
camp or not - go to hourofcode.com sometime this summer with your kids. It is a fun and interactive way to learn computer programming. 1/3 cup Orange Mustard Dressing (recipe follows) 1/2 cup slivered almonds 2 cups washed and dried baby spinach 4 scallions, finely chopped 3 cups green seedless California grapes, halved Freshly ground black pepper Orange Mustard Dressing: 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup rice vinegar 2 tablespoons honey mustard 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 350 F. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil and add the quinoa and season with salt. Simmer 9 minutes and drain well. Cool 10 minutes. Meanwhile, spread the almonds on a baking sheet and toast until golden, 6 to 8 minutes. Let cool. Transfer the quinoa to a large bowl and stir in the dressing. To make the pecans: Preheat the oven to 400 F. In a medium-size bowl, toss together the pecans, sugar, maple syrup, salt, cumin and cayenne. Spread in a single layer on a parchment or foillined small baking sheet and bake until browned and crisp, stirring once or twice, about 10 minutes. Let cool.To make the salad: In a large salad bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar and salt and pepper to taste. Add the grapes, fennel and arugula and toss. Sprinkle with the pecans and serve.

The invisible battle: managing your chronic pain (BPT) - When struggling with chronic pain, many often feel their concerns fall on deaf ears. Without physical symptoms, friends, family and sometimes even physicians may fail to empathize with the debilitating effects of the condition. Just because chronic pain lacks physical manifestations, it doesn't mean the battle is without casualties; sleep loss, decreased productivity and strained relationships are just a few of the things that may result from chronic pain conditions. There are an estimated 100 million Americans living with chronic pain, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Many of those sufferers are dealing with conditions like osteoarthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, among others. While each individual experiences pain differently, there are some effective pain management techniques, including prescription medication, which can provide potential options to try before costly surgeries or potentially addictive narcotic pain therapy. The tournament consists of two divisions: Adult Division for players ages 1834 and a Masters Division for players ages 35 and older. Rosters are limited to five players per team and each player must
