Historic Curci Home opens its doors this Saturday

Every first Saturday of the month, south Florida is treated to a bit of history in Hallandale Beach when the Curci Home opens its doors to a world that existed nearly 100 years ago for free. This walk through history traces one of the first families of the city in a home that has been refurbished to take on the 1920s look. Villa Providence (Curci House) will open this Saturday, May 2 on from 11am-4pm. The Curci Home is located at 324 SW Second Ave.

As May hadn’t even arrived yet, this past weekend saw record crowds race to enjoy on the sun and calm surf on days where the temperature soared to 87. While there aren’t dozens of residents rushing to City Hall to beat the May 9th deadline to get their name in the mix to be selected, there are those that the three commissioners and Mayor Joy Cooper have in mind, and that is where the division could come. For Mayor Cooper, it’s all about selecting someone who will bring this city to the next level and continue to do so when the residents have the chance to vote. sion for a positive future.” Cooper and others in the commission have all said that they would much rather get the candidate for the future and not someone who isn’t willing to work together. They all insists that residents can see which candidates are in this for the long term and others who are not. “This commission that they have had here in Hallandale Beach is easily the best I have seen,” resident E.J. Flowers said. “If you noticed that there is not one member of this commission who tries to be bigger than the city. I think we learned that over the past few years.” While residents don’t have a say on who comes in for the next six months – until Nov. 4 – they will at least have the chance to see how well the new, hand-picked replacement will do. “What I am looking for is someone who is in tune with this city, not a stranger to being in public and not someone who magically appears around election

time,” said Commissioner Bill Julian. “It is important to work for the residents of this city without making the commission the focus.” Julian has been around for a number of years, and even though he knows that there are many residents who can help change to the city, he also realizes that this may all come down to a popularity contest. “It’s unfortunate that we don’t have a vote on this replacement,” Julian explained. “Now what will happen, is the person who is better known by one commissioner or another will be nominated and we could be deadlocked like Dania Beach. Nobody wants that at all.” Should commissioners be unable to choose a candidate, the City has 30 days from the resignation of Vice Mayor Lewy to appoint a successor. The wait to park in any of the spots along the stretch of public beach was 25 minutes. The same can be said for Hollywood, which has so much construction, a loss of numerous parking spots do to the Margaritaville property, and limited street parking. “I would think that the people heading here are the same we will see all summer,” said Rachel Horn, who recently moved to Hallandale Beach. “The tourists have all gone back, so the traffic we see here happens to be racing toward the same destination year round.” Because the beaches along Northern Miami-Dade and Broward Counties have become such a destination, many forget that those who live in western Broward – or even Northwest Miami-Dade have no defined beaches to use. They see the upgrades that have been made up and down this region and make it their favorite. Kate Munroe is one of those who comes from one mile east of US 27 to use Dania Beach. She admits that she tried just about every beach and the distance is closer than any other place to look at the Atlantic Ocean. “I started out coming here about two years ago – after work with my bike,” Munroe explained. “Then, after a period of time, I would just come and walk. Heading here on the weekend is pretty much waiting for parking spaces for a long time.” While not all is bad news about the heavy traffic predicted for the summer months. Area businesses have also noticed and are planning to tie in the need to get to the beach with some upcoming promotions. Duffy Haegar recently began promoting a number of local businesses along Hollywood Beach. He used the large in season crowds to appeal to those who lived in the area to come back and use the many vital restaurants and specialty shops. “As someone who believes that Hollywood Beach is truly the last great small and affordable areas to eat and drink as well as shop, I always promote this area,” Haegar explained. “I come here a lot and see how many of these places struggle during the summer. I have a good feeling about this year. Too many great things on the way.” While the beaches are getting plenty of the attention, many in all of the cities are hoping that some of that spillover will help those who are facing the long summer months as well.

2014. The Hallandale Beach City Commission will convene a special meeting at City Hall at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2014 to appoint a candidate to fill the unexpired term of the Vice Mayor. "In the end, we are all looking for someone with a proven commitment to the entire community," Mayor Cooper added. Qualified candidates must have resided continuously within the City for a minimum of one year prior to the appointment date.

Candidates must submit a letter of interest, supported by a resume and either letters of recommendation or a personal biography. Letters of interest may be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline for all letters of interest and supporting documents must be completed and delivered prior to 5 p.m., on Friday, May 9. Elected to the City Commission on November 2, 2010, Vice Mayor Lewy was chosen Vice Mayor last November by the Mayor and City Commissioners. Seat 2, the seat occupied by the Vice Mayor, and Seat 4, currently held by City Commissioner Anthony Sanders, are up for election in the General election November 4, 2014. The qualifying period for the November election begins at noon Monday, June 16, and ends at noon Friday, June 20, 2014.

Good news for the residents of A1A and the residents of our Southwest neighborhood! By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Many people have been asking about the vacant seat on the commission. The vacant seat will be filled by a vote of the commission. There is not a “set process” only the rules in the charter that provide appointment by a majority vote of the remaining commissioners. If a decision is not reached after 30 days of the vacancy, the vacancy is filled by lot. Since I have been on the commission there have been four vacancies. The first from the tragic sudden death of Mayor Joe Scavo which was filled by an election. The other by Commissioner Joe Gibbons when he ran for office. In this case the commission conducted interviews and then appointed. The resignation of Vice Mayor Schiller was filled by simple nomination of commission. The charter in trusts this duty to the commission. We can simple nominate and vote in filling the seat. This time we will be interviewing. In the past the nominee could run in the upcoming election. In my opinion the same should hold true again. Vice Mayor Lewy summed it up brightly by saying the individual to fill the seat should reflect the values and

vision of this current commission including him, that were put into office by the voters. Again, I congratulate him on his new position at The American Israeli Political Affairs Committee. MORE FINSHED PROJECTS There is finally good news for the residents of A1A and the residents of our Southwest neighborhood. This past week, the city completed the water main and all lateral connections on South Ocean Drive and the old city hall has finally been raised. South Ocean Drive improvements have caused many hardships over the last season. Due to the nature of underground construction traffic it was snarled many times. This project was extremely difficult for many reasons. It is difficult to understand the nature of the problems unless you have been on the site or working with staff. I had received numerous questions about why they did not do more pipes at one time. It was not possible due to impacts it would have had to water pressure and the stability of the system. Each connection involved digging from the main pipe to property line. In many cases, the

contractor did not have the exact location of every underground service. These include: gas, storm water cable and power. Over the years, services were put into place but the city did not have the GIS capabilities that are available now. This situation created delays on construction and often when water was to be turned off, it was not or water was turned off without proper notice. The other question was, why more workers were not at each dig site. This is an easy answer. Due to the limited amount of space. Each connection only required up to six workers at a time. Working under sidewalks, in trenches and other tight spots contractors’ safety is always critical. Or why were more sits not worked on at same time. Again this would have created a service problem for the whole island. There were two major issues that continued to plague this construction, traffic and communication. The city manager tasked the contractors and our staff to work the shut off notifications with building supervisors and presidents. Some went smoothly and others no so well. As the project continued, the system went a bit

We also utilized robo calls to try and keep residents updated. Last week, when the last inspections were being completed on the last connection, there was a service interruption due to a faulty value. Please pardon the inconvenience but this was not a scheduled turn off. Good news, the work is done! Traffic was another issue that was constantly being discussed by the city commission. Many do not know but every time there was an issue, I was called and in turn contacted the Chief of police. Thank you to those who lived in the area that proactively let me know. This was not acceptable and as they like to say the buck stops with the commission. While the city manager runs day to day we need to make sure these communications are made timelier and that when contractors are working on our roads they communicate with our police department well in advance. There were many lessons learned that will help with future projects.

Signals were another issue. I recently spoke with the BC traffic division to discuss better coordination. It will be critical to address the communications issue between the residents and traffic control well before the RRR starts in June. Currently there is temporary asphalt being laid but in June, the new project will commence and it is to take a year. The RRR project is the FDOT road rehabilitation. This is all the above ground work that includes mast arms, cross walks, lighting, bus shelters and stops and a full resurfacing of the roadway. This will be an FDOT project so it will be essential that we have open communications and have traffic plans to address delays. No matter what, there will be inconveniences, they are just the nature of roadway construction. The other great news is the demolition of the old city hall is complete. Many residents have had to deal with this eyesore for a long time. It was a shame the city did not keep this property rather

than selling it to a private owner in years past. The city had an ongoing lawsuit over code liens with the property owners that went to court. The courts granted them an extension to negotiate with the city. We have finally come to an agreement. Originally the city was working on a land swap so we could build a replacement Fire Station. The lawsuit and negotiations continued for well over a year and finally the commission said enough. The city manager and city attorney reached a settlement that sold the old station to them so we could build the new station in the Palms area. The old station will be leased and the open lot will leveled with sod and maintained by the city until we move over to the new location. WLRN’s ‘South Florida Arts Beat’ Host Ed Bell to be Honored at 17th Annual Cuisine for Art Fundraiser on Thursday, May 29 • This year’s celebrity waiters include Rep. Joe Gibbons, Mayor Peter Bober and Channel 10’s Kristi Krueger HOLLYWOOD - The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s 17th Annual Cuisine for Art fundraiser on Thursday, May 29 features elected government officials and community leaders serving as celebrity waiters for an exciting and entertaining evening. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception, in which wine, vodka, and beer are served while ticket buyers bid on fabulous silent auction items such as incredible vacation packages, beautiful gift baskets, and more. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. for more than 300 people with the “March of Celebrity Waiters,” followed by a three-course meal, musical entertainment, a live auction, and the presentation of this year’s honoree, WLRN radio host Ed Bell. This year’s Cuisine for Art features special musical performances by 13-year-old singing sensation Julia Dale – the Miami Heat’s “good luck charm” – and classically trained electric violinist Randi Fishenfeld. Fantastic experiences, such as being “Sheriff for the Day” and a VIP California Wine Tour, will be auctioned in the exciting live auction. Seminole Paradise and The Galleria Mall will award gift certificates and other prizes to guests at the two tables who raise the most gratuities in honor of their celebrity waiter. An after-party for ticket buyers occurs at a Seminole Paradise “hot spot” for those who want to keep the party going following this fun-filled fundraiser. Ed Bell, now in his 43rd year as a radio producer and host on the South Florida airwaves, he has devoted his broadcasting career to exposing and elevating the arts. Prior

to joining WLRN in 1977, Bell presented the recordings of local musicians on WBUS, WTMI, and WVUM. The University of Miami alum was recognized for his dedication to America’s music by being named Best Local Jazz Advocate by New Times in its June 1995 Best of South Florida issue. Other production credits include cofounding and co-producing The Hollywood Jazz Festival (1983-86) and co-founding The Sunshine Jazz Organization, a jazz support not-for-profit. Bell was honored with a Visionary Award from The Miami Beach Arts Trust (2009) and an Arts Hero Award from The Arts and Business Council (2010). His work on his radio show “South Florida Arts Beat” was honored in 2009 with a Society of Professional Journalists Award. His mission continues every Friday at 1 p.m. on WLRN radio. Community Partnership Grant Enables Qualifying Youth to Attend Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Summer Arts Camps HOLLYWOOD - Thanks to a Community Partnership Grant from the City of Hallandale Beach, qualifying youth ages 14-17 in Hallandale can pursue their passion for the arts this summer at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Grant funds will provide reduced tuition scholarships and bus transportation to as many as 25 teens from low-income households in Hallandale for camp sessions being presented June 9-Aug. 8. End of an era

It’s the end of an era; the old City Hall has been leveled to make way for the relocation of the United States headquarters of Aspex Eyewear. Located at 308 S. Dixie Highway, the property was used as City Hall for 19 years, from 1968 through 1997, when the City outgrew the building. The meet the needs of residents, the City government moved to the present location at 400 S. Federal Highway. Residents asked for ideas on completing Foster Park by designing a public plaza

Residents are encouraged to write ideas on three boards in the public plaza at Foster Road and NW 6th Avenue.

Hallandale Beach is asking residents for ideas on completing Foster Park by designing a public plaza on the southwest corner NW 6th Avenue and Foster Road. The City has erected three idea boards asking residents to mark ideas for the design. The idea boards were placed on Monday, April 22, and will be removed in May. The public plaza is located on the southwest corner of Foster Road, directly south of the Foster Park Community Center and Park, 609 NW 6th Avenue. The plaza is just over one-half acre, and will compliment Foster Park. The first phase of Foster Park was opened in September 2012 and includes the Community Center, complete with micro library, fitness center, computer center and kitchen, a covered playground, gazebo and fitness trail. This phase was built after numerous community meetings where residents were asked for

input into the needs of the community. The original phase of construction did not include the linear park. Each morning, the City staff photographs the three boards prior to erasing the boards in preparation for a new round of suggestions. The property is owned by the City and is located within the Hallandale Beach Community Redevel-

opment Agency (HBCRA). Suggestions will be evaluated followed by community meetings before a design is approved. This is the second time the City is using idea boards to collect resident ideas. Last year, the City asked residents to write ideas for Sunrise Park. Several hundred ideas were collected and are being evaluated.

Beat in eggs and olive oil. Add flours, xanthan gum and salt and beat well with a dough hook for five minutes, scraping down the sides occasionally. Mixture should be a very thick batter. Lightly oil two medium baking sheets and sprinkle with cornmeal. Spread batter about 1-inch thick into pans and top with garlic, rosemary, olives, shallots, cheese and Maldon salt, in that order, pressing lightly into the dough. Let stand in a warm spot for 30 minutes or until dough has doubled in size. Preheat oven to 400 F. Bake focaccia for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown, tenting with foil during the last five or 10 minutes if topping browns too quickly. GLUTEN-FREE MUFFALETTA SANDWICH 1 cup Wine Country Olive Tapenade 8 slices provolone cheese 8 ounces thinly sliced smoked ham 4 ounces sliced Genova salame 4 ounces sliced Sopressa Veneta Place bread on a board and carefully cut in half horizontally. Spread tapenade over the bottom half and top with cheese, ham, salame and sopressa. Cover with focaccia top and press down gently. Cut in wedges. Makes eight servings.

Barbecue season gets underway with National Barbecue Month (BPT) - May 1 kicks off National Barbecue Month and the beginning of the season for families to gather and enjoy more memorable meals together outside. Across the nation, from the Carolinas to the California coast, barbecue has never been bigger. Barbecue products and flavors line grocery store shelves, and shipments of grills and smokers reached 14 million last year, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association. As you begin planning your summer get-togethers, whether it's a casual afternoon barbecue or a more elaborate evening feast, here are some fun and easy ways families can enjoy their time together without a lot of stress or mess. Keep the kids occupied - If you're using a smoker or grill for your gathering, or if you have lots of activity happening in the kitchen around a hot stove, let the kids help out and teach them fire safety as they prepare and cook food. before your gathering, head to your local discount store and purchase some simple yard games to keep them entertained. Bean bag tosses, sidewalk art, Hula Hoops, Frisbees, Wiffle Ball and sticker tag are all fun activities the kids will love - and adults can play too!
