Do Proposals Really Come Down to Setting? ACE.com’s findings suggest that, for many, the setting is more than just background noise – it’s part of the equation.
69% of Florida men believe the setting of a proposal can influence whether someone says “yes,” highlighting just how much weight is placed on the moment itself.
Over one in three admit that rising dining costs make them more likely to consider a budget-friendly venue - suggesting romance is increasingly being balanced with practicality.
What Do Women Think?
• To round out the picture, 100 women were also asked how they would feel about a fast food proposal - and the results show it’s far from a guaranteed dealbreaker.
• 49% said it would be funny but memorable
• 24% would find it romantic
• 22% described it as completely unromantic
• Just 4% saw it as desperate
When it comes to embarrassment:
• 44% wouldn’t feel embarrassed at all
• 34% would feel slightly embarrassed
• Only 21% combined said they feel very or extremely embarrassed.
In other words, while the odds might vary, a fast food proposal is more likely to be remembered fondly than rejected outright.
“Proposals have always felt like highstakes moments, but what we’re seeing here is that people are rethinking what really matters,” says a spokesperson at ACE.com. “It’s less about spending big and more about choosing a setting where both people feel comfortable. In many cases, that actually improves the odds. A relaxed environment can take the pressure off and make the moment feel more genuine – something that ultimately gives you a better chance of hearing ‘yes.’”

plants or cleaners. However, many owners may underestimate the invisible dangers — such as poisonous metals — that their pets could also come across in their daily lives.
While metal poisoning is not highly common in small animals, there are several potential intoxications that can require emergency care and sometimes intensive intervention.
Dr. Christine Rutter, a Clinical Associate Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, discusses the health risks associated with different metals and how owners can keep their pets safe.
Zinc Intoxication
According to Rutter, the intoxication most commonly seen in the emergency department at Texas A&M is from zinc, usually from ingesting a penny.
“Pennies minted after 1982 are coppercoated zinc discs,” Rutter said. “Once ingested, the acids in the GI tract erode the copper and expose the zinc, which directly irritates the esophagus or stomach wall and is absorbed into the GI tract.”
Many wire crates are made of zinc, so pets that tend to chew on crate bars may also be in danger of zinc toxicity; the same worry surrounds pets licking diaper creams and zinc-based sunscreens.
Clinical signs of intoxication can vary and may include:
• Lethargy
• Weakness
Rutter notes that some pets may not show clinical symptoms until they are severely affected.
The GI irritation caused by Zinc can be severe and sometimes even requires surgical intervention. Once a veterinarian identifies a penny or other ingested metal with X-rays, they can remove the fragment with an endoscope or surgery.
“The Zinc toxicity itself can destabilize red blood cell membranes and cause them to rupture, meaning that pets may need a blood transfusion,” Rutter said.
“While the prognosis for Zinc toxicity is usually good, pets can be very sick and require a lot of care to get them back to health.”
Rutter suggests avoiding the use of diaper creams and zinc-based sunscreens on small animals, as pets may lick it off.
“The level of concern depends on the product, but it is in the pet’s best interest to avoid the risk altogether,” she said.
Lead Intoxication
When a pet has low Red Blood Cell counts and a chronic course of illness, lead poisoning is one of the things veterinarians consider.
Pets usually are exposed to lead by ingesting paint chips; parts of painted objects, like toys; or objects made of lead, like fishing lures or ammunition fragments.
“Pets typically have to ingest Lead for it to become toxic, meaning that pets are not at risk for lead intoxication due to retained lead pellets, bullet fragments, or shotgun pellets remaining in the body,”
prolonged pain or other injury.”
When veterinarians suspect Lead intoxication, they will perform a complete blood count and blood film evaluation.
“Metal fragments are usually visible on X-rays, but the absence of fragments doesn’t rule out intoxication,” Rutter said. “Treatment is focused on removing the source of intoxication, though other medical therapies — like a blood transfusion — may be necessary.”
Whether bringing your furry companion into a new home, a vacation rental, or an afternoon at a friend’s house, owners should be aware of the lead threats associated with a dated space.
“Leaded paint was banned in the U.S. in 1978, but there are still plenty of older homes and antique toys with lead paint present under newer paint layers,” Rutter said.
Home testing kits for lead are available for owners who want to test painted surfaces, paint chips, and any antique metal objects.
Copper Intoxication
Copper intoxication can occur when an animal ingests Copper-containing materials — such as antifouling marine paint or a high-Copper diet.
“Foods certified by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) are fine,” Rutter said. “High copper content in a diet is uncommon unless dogs eat food intended for other species.”
Another explanation for intoxication is when an animal experiences a genetic error of Copper metabolism.
“Some breeds of dogs — such as Labrador Retrievers, West Highland White Terriers, American Cocker Spaniels, and Doberman Pinschers — are genetically predisposed to Copper storage disorders,” Rutter said.
In affected dogs, Copper builds up in the body and causes inflammation and Red Blood Cell destruction with signs of intoxication ranging from vague to severe.
“Blood testing, such as a complete blood count and blood chemistry, may suggest Liver Dysfunction or Red Blood Cell changes,” Rutter said. “Definitive diagnosis typically requires a tissue biopsy. Most dogs without exposure or genetic risk are not in danger of Copper toxicity, but we do look for it in some breeds and dogs with Chronic Hepatitis.”
Guarding Against Invisible Dangers
Although metal intoxications are rare in small animals, owners should still be mindful of what their pets have access to and be prepared in case of emergency.
“Prevention is about limiting exposure and, when possible, entirely avoiding pets’ encounters with these metals,” Rutter said.
By prioritizing awareness regarding potential household threats and consulting a veterinarian if your pet comes in contact with a potentially toxic metal item, owners can ensure their pets continue enjoying a lifestyle free from metal mishaps.

To expand the number of recreational activities available to campers ages 8-13, age-appropriate field trips are scheduled. Bus transportation is provided and oper ated by American Heritage Schools, and all drivers are properly licensed and screened. City of Pembroke Pines Earns Autism Friendly Partner Designation
The City of Pembroke Pines will be officially recognized as an Autism Friendly Partner by the University of Miami Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) on Wednesday, April 15th, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the City’s commitment to creating inclusive and accessible environments for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related disabilities. The designation will be formally presented during the City Commission Meeting on Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 pm, held in the City’s Chambers located at 601 City Center Way. The City began working with CARD in October 2025 to further enhance and build upon the inclusive programs and services already in place. Through this collaboration, Pembroke Pines strengthened existing efforts while expanding its partnership with CARD to develop new initiatives that ultimately led to this designation. Existing efforts include inclusive recreation programming, adaptive sports in partnership with the YMCA of South Florida, a specialized academic program at the City’s Charter FSU elementary school, an ADA-inclusive playground at Memorial Park, a Special Population Summer Camp, workforce training for Police and Fire personnel, and sensory-friendly cultural programming such as “Sensory Saturdays.” The City continues to expand its efforts with several new initiatives currently underway, reflecting a deeper, more comprehensive approach to accessibility and inclusion. While most caregivers instinctively watch for obvious dangers like tall slides or roughhousing, many of the most common playground risks come from smaller, easily overlooked details. The good news? Preventing injuries doesn’t require hovering or limiting fun.
As the Chief Technology Officer at Rubberecycle Corporation (which offers top quality rubber surfacing products for playgrounds), I have seen firsthand how a few simple adjustments and a more intentional approach to supervision can go a long way. Here are eight often-missed playground safety errors and how to avoid them.
Assuming All Playground Surfaces Are Safe
Not all ground surfaces are created equal. Softer surfaces like rubber mulch and mats can cushion falls, while hard surfaces like concrete or packed dirt don’t provide adequate shock absorption during falls and can increase the risk of serious injury. So before your child starts playing, take a quick look at the ground beneath the equipment. Is it soft? Deep enough? Even a brief check can help you spot areas where falls could be more dangerous than they appear.
Overlooking Equipment Temperature
On sunny days, playground equipment (especially metal slides, swings, and climbing bars) can heat up quickly. What seems warm to an adult can be painfully hot for a child’s sensitive skin. Solving Florida Cold Cases: Attorney General James Uthmeier Launches A Statewide Partnership
Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a new statewide partnership aimed at helping law enforcement agencies solve cold cases using advanced forensic DNA testing and genetic genealogy. Through this initiative, the Office of Statewide Prosecution is partnering with Othram, a forensic technology company specializing in human identification, to proactively identify and assist unsolved cases across the state that may be solvable through existing DNA evidence.
“For too long, many victims and their families have been left without answers,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “Our partnership with Othram will add an invaluable tool to our proactive approach for solving cold cases. We hope this effort brings answers and some measure of closure to those who have waited years.”

cases and delivering the justice that victims deserve,” said Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez. “We owe it to every victim, every family, and every community to pursue the truth—no matter how much time has passed. Because justice matters. Accountability matters. And closure matters.”
“At FDLE, our agents, analysts and forensic scientists review and analyze every piece of evidence, explore every lead, and strive to bring closure to families,” said FDLE Special Agent in Charge John Vecchio. “The advancements in forensics and investigative tactics continue to evolve. “These cases remained unsolved not because the evidence wasn’t there, but because the technology didn’t exist to interpret it,” said Othram Founder David Mittelman. “By combining CODIS with advanced DNA-based identity inference, Florida is enabling investigators to gen-
erate leads without a suspect or database match, identifying offenders and delivering answers and justice for families.”
The initiative will begin with three multi-circuit, multi-homicide investigations spanning different regions of the state, including:
• A 1970s murder case with ties to Broward and Miami-Dade Counties
• A late-2000s double homicide involving victims found in the Miami Gardens area
• An early 1980s homicide in Central Florida
While the cases remain under investigation, the goal of the partnership is to provide local law enforcement agencies with new leads and investigative breakthroughs through modern DNA analysis that was unavailable when many of these crimes were committed.
To date, there are 21,000 unsolved murder cases in Florida and nearly 900 cases with unidentified human remains.
Othram’s technology can use complete or partial DNA evidence to generate investigative leads through forensic genetic genealogy, a process that has helped solve violent crimes and identify unknown victims across the country.
Unlike traditional cold case efforts that often rely on case-by-case submissions, this partnership is designed to be statewide and proactive—helping identify unsolved violent crimes across Florida biological evidence may still hold the key to solving the case.
The new partnership with the Office of Statewide Prosecution allows local law enforcement agencies to leverage this technology to solve cold cases where viable DNA evidence exists. The initiative is expected to expand beyond homicide investigations and into serial sexual battery cases, further strengthening efforts to pursue justice for victims of violent crime in Florida.

Antisemitism continues to rise, echoing patterns seen in the 1930’s. Throughout history, Jews have faced persecution, displacement and violence. Monday marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah. I attended a memorial at Beth Torah, sponsored by several Jewish organizations including Yad Vashem USA. Some Holocaust survivors, now elderly, shared their stories. The ones alive today were children during the Holocaust. They lost their parents, siblings, and entire families.
Over six million people died, including 1.5 million children. While some survived concentration camps, others escaped or were hidden, they still live with the horrors and guilt of surviving. Survivor Regina Behar shared her story. What struck me was she said, “my childhood was stolen.” She, along with others, survived thanks to those who risked their lives to protect them.
Rabbi Farber shared an interesting story in regards to what is said in the Bible. There is a passage that every generation will see evil. In other words, there will be another snake that comes out of the ground to attack the Jews.
During the times of historical struggles and war many leaders did not choose to be leaders. David, Joseph, and Ruth are some of the heroes that stood up against oppression. They stood up, spoke out, and did what was necessary at personal risk to protect their community.
Since World War II the message has been Never Again! Since October 7th we have been saying Never Again is Now! I have listened over the years to many survivors. It is always very emotional but necessary. The pain they endured. Their childhood was stolen from them. The sense of guilt for being the only person to survive. Their words are true. Their words are not some made-up stories that Holocaust deniers like to spin.
Florida State Representative Fabian Basabe shared such an amazing speech. I was hoping to get a copy of it rather than just taking bits of it for this article. He made it a point to say, “standing up for truth is not political. Standing up for your community is not political. Speaking out and doing the right thing is not political.“
Other speakers, including him, shared the fact that silence and not speaking out equals utter surrender. If not us and now then when.
Mayor Steven Meiner from Miami Beach also shared the same message. He told us when he just became Mayor October 7th occurred. He had to deal with protestors. He had to deal with misguided Palestinian supporters blocking roads and attacking local Jewish businesses. He did not back down. He shared his story when he had first started to set up boundaries for the protesters. They were actually sued for free speech. He did not stand down. He won and his ordinance has
become a model for other cities. Even to this day any person that spews lies and hate from the podium in his chambers will never sit silent.
Lies need to be called out and corrected. I have said this all along. Supporting the fight against hate is extremely important. It is a start. Inaction or indifference allows lies and misinformation to continue and grow into the hate that we are seeing now. I ask everyone if you see a lie, call it out. These lies create stupidity. Stupidity creates ignorant followers. You may not agree with everything but in a world like today, facts of history matter.

Community-Based Connections, Inc. (CBCI), a Not-For-Profit Organization dedicated to youth development, family strengthening, and community empowerment, welcomes the public to its A.D.A.M. (Awesome Dads, Awesome Men) Challenge Fatherhood Family Fun Day on Saturday, April 25th, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. Noon to 5:00 p.m. at Mitchell Moore Park, located at 901 Northwest 10th Street, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060. The free event is designed to celebrate fatherhood, strengthen family bonds, and bring the community together through high energy games, prizes, interactive challenges, and opportunities to connect with local resources.
CBCI’s A.D.A.M. is a free fatherhood mentoring program funded by the Jim Moran Foundation. The program provides fathers with tools, support, and education to strengthen relationships, improve parenting, and enhance family stability. CBCI has delivered evidence-based programs for more than 16 years in Broward County to help families achieve long-term wellbeing. CBCI recently expanded its services into Palm Beach County with the opening of its Riviera Beach office and the completion of its first successful Fathers and Family Day on March 28th at Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School.
