Walk to Fight Cancer HOLLYWOOD - The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Hollywood is holding its annual Relay For Life event on Friday, April 24, 2015 at McArthur High School, 6501 Hollywood Boulevard. The activities will begin with the Opening Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. when local teams will set up camp and stay up all night for the fight against cancer. The teams are a combination of City of Hollywood employees, residents, cancer survivors, families, social groups, civic and student organizations and businesses that started raising money last year. more than $10,000. Basic Law Enforcement Recruit Training is eye-opening By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH Over the past week, one of the most important workshops took place with the Hallandale Beach City Commission. Last Monday, we went to Broward College Institute of Public Safety for a crash course in Basic Law Enforcement Recruit Training, it was truly eye opening. While some have spun this into political theatrics, it is nothing to poke fun at. Law enforcement officers are required 770 hours of training to be eligible to take the State Officer Certification Exam S.O.C.E. If the candidate passes, then they can apply to become a Law Enforcement Officer or a State Deputy. They will not become certified until they are officially hired by a department. To apply to take the course, you need to be at least 19 years of age, a citizen of the US, show good moral character, process a high school diploma or GED deemed acceptable by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, a FL driver’s license. The applicants for law enforcement must also have an acceptable driving record. This means less than 3 moving violations within the last three years. Suspensions will be reviewed and may preclude them from the process. Obviously, they must be free of convictions. If an applicant used marijuana within one year, other drugs including the misuse of prescription drugs
within 3 years they are not eligible. Also, anyone with a dishonorable discharge is not eligible. Our city has additional educational and psychiatric requirements before hiring police officers. Requirements also include that individuals cannot have offensive tattoos seen or unseen that suggest racism, gang or hate. Visible tattoos depending on their content also or prohibited, this includes sexually suggestive. This is only step one. The second step is Basic Abilities Testing, T.A.B.E (Test of Adult Basic Education), Motor Skills testing and a swim test. Each applicant must pay for these, after passing all you can apply. There are only 5 students accepted for the course at a time. If you want to find out more, you can research State Statute 943.13. As you can see, there are robust requirements before you even start down the path to become a police officer. As part of the requirements to sit for the exam, you must go through training exercises both at the stateof-the-art virtual training facility and also on street patrol. We received firsthand experience for only one day and we were focused on experiencing what an officer may go through deciding the “Use of Force” which is set out in State Statute 776.05. This state law is based on Graham vs. Connor Supreme Court decision. The law provides for

Retaking felons who have escaped or are committed to arresting felons escaping or fleeing from justice, this does not constitute a defense in civil actions for damages brought for the wrongful use of deadly force, unless it was necessary to prevent the arrest from being defeated by such flight and when feasible, some warning had been given. The law adds, if there is a reasonable belief by the officer, the felons possess a threat of death to the officer or others or the feeling that the felon has committed a crime by the inflection or threat of infliction of serious physical harm to another person. One can see that this law is where there are so many issues and every incident is different. We all have a shared responsibility to understand these laws before passing judgment. Our one day training showed us just how important training is, when these life and death decisions are made. They are not made in split seconds but often in 100th of a second. The questions and recent publicized events have brought to
the forefront the “Use Of Force” debate. As our Deputy Chief Michaels shared in every instance, there are actions that are legal but are they right. The super majority of officers are making good decisions and legal decisions that may not always seem right to the public. The goal is to have a balance between legal and right. In my opinion this means training, training and training. It does not just mean cameras. Cameras are a tool in documenting an incident. An officer has at their disposal many tools; their presence at a scene, verbal communication, pepper spray, Taser and a gun. All of the above are used when an officer is making a decision when addressing an incident, the implementation of a new tool is a crucial decision. It is not just about money, it is about the safety of residents and officers. This is why I have been pressing for a pilot and clear understandable policy for both officers and the public. Rather than an instant pulling of the trigger, on a new program requiring all officers to have a camera. When a trained officer is adding a tool that must become part of their second nature, there is no need for a rush. Our city
Manager and our Chief have agreed to this approach. This is why even the implementation of the pilot has taken time. After coming back from a USCM conference of Mayors event that focused on the Topic “Will your city be the next Ferguson?,” I came back wanting to evaluate every aspect of our department and interactions in our city. We are undergoing a full independent evaluation of our department, it is not complete yet. You can and should be a part of it. We have held the first of Public Forums Connect Communicate Collaborate and recently, the hands on workshop. It’s not just about one solution or money, it is about a holistic approach to ensure our department remains proactive so we truly are not the next Ferguson. Another tool to prevent crime is, our top notch PAL program. Over 1100 children are involved in our many sports teams that are offered. This does not just mean participating in sports, it also requires dedication to academics. Two of our young adults have been recognized nationally due to their combination of athletics and studies; Jalenne Caradin and Isabella Cespedes. They were selected as
First Team All-American Senior Scholars by POP Warner, the largest Cheer and Football organization in the country. Only 35 students from each grade nationally, are selected. We have two 8th graders on team 1! They have maintained a 96% grade point average. As a parent of three and a grandmother, I understand how important athletics are to creating well-rounded students and the overall health of our children. PAL is always looking for support. DENTAL IMPLANTS If you are missing most or all of your teeth you have probably considered getting dentures. While traditional dentures restore the look of your smile and support facial muscles, they come with some disadvantages. Like a traditional denture, a dental bridge rests over the top of the gums, leaving the underlying gums and bone to eventually deteriorate without proper stimulation. As the jawbone weakens and the gums recede, the dental bridge can begin to slide and cause irritation. Plaque can easily creep into the space between the gum and dental bridge, creating a risk for periodontal disease, additional tooth loss, and other oral health issues.
Implant supported dental bridges provide a longer-term and healthier solution for tooth replacement. Instead of having to reshape the adjacent healthy teeth, one or more dental implants are positioned into the gums to function like tooth roots. These dental implants attach to the dental bridge, creating chewing support and preventing bone or gum loss. In addition, implant supported dental bridges are slip resistant, since they are attached firmly to the implants.
DENTAL IMPLANTS A dental implant involves surgically placing a support -- a titanium cylinder, screw or blade, for instance -- into your jawbone. The term implant can refer to the procedure or this titanium support structure itself. Two PAL Cheerleaders Named National Scholars Two PAL of Hallandale Beach cheerleaders, who were named First Team POP Warner National Scholars, were awarded $1,000 this week to help fund their trip to the national awards banquet Memorial Day weekend in San Diego. Jaelle Coradin and Isabella Cespedes were among 35 Cheerleader First-Team members chosen out of about 500,000 POP Warner participants. Hallandale Beach City Commissioners honored the two scholar-athletes at Wednesday’s meeting and pledged $1,000 toward their drive to attend the national awards banquet. The young ladies must raise more than $3,000 to make the trip over Memorial Day weekend. The two ladies, Gulfstream Middle School 8th graders, are members of the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Hallandale Beach Thoroughbred Cheerleaders. According to the national POP Warner, about 8,000 of the young men and young women playing football and cheerleading maintain at least a 96% in the classroom to be considered a scholar-athlete. Students must maintain a 2.0 (70%) classroom grade point average to participate in the programs. Jaelle and Isabella are leaders in the classroom, and their PAL of Hallandale Beach activities also include soccer. The nationally known youth organization selects 35 First Team cheerleaders and 35 First Team football players in grades 5 through 8 as the top scholars each year. Hallandale Beach Police and Fire Rescue provide information and handouts to the community members. Relaxing at the event are, Breanna Tucker, 7, and her mom, Brenda Richards. The Police offer handouts, video games and are on hand for one-on-one meetings with residents. Fire Rescue brings fire trucks and offers safety information. In medium bowl, make guacamole by mixing avocados, green chiles, lime juice, red onion and cilantro, mashing slightly; set aside. 2. Place Chipotle Sauce ingredients in blender or food processor. This recognition reinforces The Mount Sinai Heart Institute as Florida’s premiere cardiovascular program, offering patients the best cardiac surgery survival rate in Florida, and the best heart attack survival rate in South Florida.* The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study evaluates performance and outcomes in key areas such as acute myocardial infraction (AMI), heart failure, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), as well as mortality rates, 30day readmission rates, average length of stay, and average cost. On average, the 50 Top Cardiovascular hospitals showed a $750 to $4,000 average lower cost per patient case. Mount Sinai has a significantly lower cost per case in CABG patients ($22,977) when compared to the benchmark ($34,220) and peer ($37,369) medians; and, an average lower cost per case in PCI patients ($12,814) when compared to benchmark ($13,600) and peer ($16,621) medians. This level of efficiency translates to better patient outcomes and quicker recoveries. In fact, Mount Sinai has a shorter
length of stay for CABG patients (7.7) when compared to benchmark (8.3) and peer (9.1) medians. And, with minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques pioneered by Mount Sinai’s chief of cardiac surgery, Dr. Joseph Lamelas – who performs the most valve surgeries in Florida – patients have less physical trauma and better long-term outcomes. In addition, heart attack patients at Mount Sinai benefit from the organization’s high reliability organization model. “When you are having a heart attack, you rely on an efficient team of operators to save your life,” said Dr. Gervasio Lamas, chief of the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai. “At Mount Sinai, we have a wellorganized, high reliability system in place where everyone who interacts with the patient – from the paramedics, to the ER secretary, to the ER doctor all the way to the vascular internationalist in the cath lab – is highly trained to provide the most efficient and highest level of care when time is of the essence.” In contrast to hospitals that were not recognized, overall, the 2015 Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals also had: • Significantly higher inpatient survival than non-winning cardiovascular hospitals (19- to 30-percent higher) • Far fewer patient complications (6- to 13percent fewer)
Four Tips for Rosacea Sufferers Looking for Healthier-Looking Skin (BPT) - "I used to wake up in the morning, see myself in the mirror, and I would just get upset," said Brian Doddie - a husband, father and rosacea patient. "All the redness and the bumps on my face made me feel insecure. At work I'd have to give presentations and I would simply get embarrassed. For the longest time, I thought I had acne... until I eventually went to the dermatologist and was given the diagnosis of rosacea. My doctor helped me choose the right treatment that finally helped clear-up my skin." Brian is not alone. While people may be less aware of the condition than acne, there are in fact an estimated 16 million Americans who suffer from the bumps, pimples and facial redness of rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition. Because of the physical manifestation on the face, rosacea patients are often embarrassed and frustrated by their condition, and it may negatively impact their social lives. In a recent study conducted by the National Rosacea Society, 52 percent of the respondents said they had avoided face-to-face contact because of the disorder. There are a number of environmental and emotional factors that can prompt rosacea to flare-up unpredictably. Dermatologist and Galderma consultant Linda Stein Gold, M.D. shares her tips on how to manage rosacea symptoms and keep your skin looking healthy: Moisturize... the right way: It is important to protect your skin from the sun by using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. It may sound simple, but the UV rays of the sun can permanently damage skin and even act as a trigger for rosacea. When picking a moisturizer, use skincare products developed for sensitive skin.Know your triggers: Unlike many other conditions, rosacea varies from person to person and is challenging to manage. Keep a personal trigger diary and track which products, foods, drinks and activities induce a flare-up. If environmental factors don't seem to be the cause of skin inflammation, patients should be aware that microscopic, typically harmless Demodex mites may also be a possible culprit.Visit your doctor to confirm your diagnosis: The biggest mistake many people with rosacea make is to think that they suffer from adult acne. To make matters worse, many ingredients commonly found in acne products can actually irritate sensitive skin and act as triggers for rosacea - alcohol, fragrance and menthol are just a few to look out for. Only a dermatologist can accurately evaluate your symptoms, give you a proper diagnosis and determine what is right for you.Weigh your treatment options: In a national study of rosacea patients, 46 percent of sufferers reported that they changed their medication, usually due to lack of improvement. Rosacea is such an individual disease so discussing the treatment options with your dermatologist is key.
