It is strongly recommended to plan tooth extractions very carefully, and seriously consider the resulting bone loss from tooth extraction and dire esthetic, functional, and psychological consequences. The following are some of the more important (not all) consequences of not using dental implants to replace failed or missing teeth: One of the most serious consequences of not having dental implants, following tooth loss, is facial collapse and premature aging due to bone loss. It is important to know that facial bones provide support to overlying cheek, nose, lips, and skin. Atrophy of these bones directly affects those overlying structures and result in facial collapse and premature aging. Dental implants, like natural teeth prevent this bone loss. This is because they are anchored in the jaw bone, and transmit chewing forces to surrounding bone. These forces stimulate ‘bone remodeling’, a natural biological process in which old bone cells are continually destroyed and replaced with new cells. This maintains volume, density, and shape of facial bones. Facial bones undergo atrophy if not adequately stimulated (exercised). This is very similar to muscle atrophy due to lack of exercise. Dentures and bridges do not anchor to jaw bone, and fail to stimulate ‘bone remodeling’. Consequently, replacing failed or missing teeth with dentures or
bridges usually results in severe facial bone loss. Not having dental implants to replace failed or missing teeth may result in speech disturbances. This happens when several or all teeth are failing or missing, and dentures are used instead of dental implants. Dentures are bulky and cover large surfaces in the mouth, including the palate. This limits tongue movement, resulting in impaired phonetics and speech. If failing or missing teeth are not properly replaced with dental implants, the remaining teeth in the mouth become weak and more prone to decay, fractures, and infections. This is especially true when bridges or dentures are used. Bridges are anchored to adjacent teeth (by cutting those teeth to almost half their size), overloading and weakening them. Anchor teeth usually decay, get infected, or break, causing more tooth loss. Dentures are also anchored to remaining teeth by wires (clasps), weakening, loosening them. Not having dental implants to replace failed or missing teeth may lead to periodontal (gum) disease. Bridges connect 3 or more teeth together, making flossing difficult or impossi-
ble. This will compromise oral hygiene and result in gum disease. Researches have concluded that people who have dentures or bridges are more prone to periodontal disease. The psychological effects of tooth and bone loss are complex and varied, and range from minimal to a state of neuroticism. Most denture wearers feel their social life is significantly affected. They are concerned about kissing and romantic situations, especially if the partner is unaware of their oral handicap. Surveys indicate that not all patients are able to use their dentures. Some individuals are even reluctant to use their dentures for social occasions. Individuals with severe bone loss are not able to use their dentures at all. They rarely leave their home environment and when they feel forced to venture out, the thought of meeting and talking to people when not wearing their teeth is unsettling. All this may be prevented or corrected with dental implants. Not using dental implants may result in compromised systemic health. This is directly related to one’s ability to eat. The difference in chewing forces in a person with natural or implant teeth and one who wears dentures is dra-

Northeast drainage pumps pass state inspection! By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - It is official, the northeast drainage pumps have passed state inspection! The city conducted a community meeting last Tuesday to review the project and the future landscape plan. At that meeting, we were still waiting to hear from the inspectors on the second pump. The meeting was well attended and concerns were addressed about if the pumps would work and how well. The best way to explain how they will work is, they will not pump out to tide but pump over 250 feet down where the water can be stored. Technically, this is called recharging. This is much different than other areas that depend on simple gravity drains where the water often has nowhere to go at high tide. The system underground has increased capacity within the large pipes. This design has increased the capacity that can be held and conveyed. The pumps alone can pump an equivalent of over two swimming pools in one minute. The pumps will be triggered through a float that will measure an inch of water. They are automatically controlled and have redundant backup controls at our water plant. Many residents are not aware that we have pumps for wastewater throughout the city that work in a similar manner.
The residents also ask about the roadway rehabilitation. Currently, staff is finishing the asphalt resurfacing at specific parking lots. The next steps will be sealcoating along the corridor, over 38 lots will be restored. The work on the lots has taken the cooperation of all the condo presidents and/or managers who had to apply for permits, since they are in control of the private property, all costs were covered by our city. The original bid included restoration of the impacted area to the way it was before. It did not include the resurfacing of the private lots, only patching, any areas that were impacted simply from constrain traffic nor dust or replacement of the trees that ended up being removed. The project itself due to poor ground conditions and other engineering issues ended up creating over costs that are currently being evaluated. These costs were over $1 million dollars. Rather than putting more money in last year’s budget, we had to make sure that everything passed inspection and was working. The new landscape plan is currently in the bidding process. Staff has been working over the past months with a landscape architect on a plan. Staff must prepare the Request for Proposals and post it, rather than evaluate the respondent firms to narrow them to two no
more than three. After that, the commission must approve the bid. This process will take time due to state regulations. Typically it takes approximately 6 months. When awarded, the company will acquire permits and arrange construction logistics. The actual construction is projected to commence in December or January. After working with staff and the residents, the plan includes a robust streetscape for both sides of the street. Parking will remain the same on the east side of 14th. Originally, we had looked at angular parking and additional parking on both sides of the street. This change would have required moving the crown of the road east and would have in impact on drainage. Curbing with bulb outs will be put in places to protect the grass areas and create more areas where trees can be planted. Trash receptacles and decorative benches will be placed along the sidewalks. The bus shelters will be replaced. In addition to some of the trees that were placed between the condo and the pump station, additional trees and decorative landscaping will be installed to cover the stations and make it more aesthetically pleasing. Many residents are concerned about the noise. To assure residents that the hospital grade mufflers are
enough and to address any noise concerns, staff will be hiring an acoustical engineer to evaluate the sound levels. It should be noted that the pumps do not have to be tested weekly or monthly, there is a maintenance plan as prescribed by the manufacturer. Staff will be following up with those specifications. The pumps will also only run when needed. In other news, the city commission has scheduled our special meeting workshop on Monday, April 13th. The workshop will be focusing on police issues including use of force, citywide cameras and body cameras. The city commission will be going to the Police Training Center at 10 am that morning to get hands on experience on standard operating procedures used by our officers. This will include interactive simulated gun training and stun gun training. After the trip, we will take a break and reconvene at our city hall chamber for a panel discussion to review these issues. I encourage resi-
dents to attend the meeting starting at 2 p.m. which is expected to last until 5 p.m. Our police officers, PBA reps, camera experts and other outside policing agencies will be on the panel to provide a balance of viewpoints on the pros and cons of any changes the commission is considering... Hallandale Beach is easing into summer and many of our visitors are beginning to head back up north. As a city, we are and will remain a home away from home for many visitors and part time residents or should I say a home away from the cold. On behalf our city and our many businesses, I want to thank all of our residents for a wonderful season. HOPE South Florida provides rental subsidy assistance, case management, and wrap around services including job readiness training, employment referrals and budget and decision making assistance. “As a single mom with a young son I didn’t know how I would afford a place to live when my employer cut my hours and I ended up transitioning out of an unhealthy relationship,” says program participant Latoya Thomas. “HOPE South Florida helped me find an affordable apartment and pay the move in cost while they encouraged me to prepare to take the exams to become a certified child care worker.” Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF) has served more than 1,000 low-income residents in Hollywood by providing case management and helping over 500 with job placement assistance. HUF, through its Center for Working Families program, places approximately 22 people in jobs each year and offers financial counseling, job and life skills coaching. Second Chance Society (SCS) has served more than 3400 homeless and struggling individuals in Broward County since 2001. Their skills are being highlighted in the photo with Memorial Health Systems to teach other paramedics and medical professionals how to recognize the signs. Early recognition allows paramedics to send the patient to a stroke center instead of a primary care facility where the patient often is transferred to a stroke center. 10th Kiwanis Club Pasta Dinner fundraiser was a huge success By Setphen Cummings The Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach recently hosted their 10th annual pasta dinner fundraiser and event coordinator and city of Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Bill Julian reported that this was his most successful venture in our club’s history. After months of planning, the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach made substantial donations to the Hallandale High School Key Club, Gulfstream Middle School and the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League according to club treasurer and PAL Program Director Jonathan Carrillo. “Julian is the most unselfish, altruistic individual who I know and is a master fundraiser showing an affection for the youth in Hallandale Beach like no other man” according to Kiwanis club member and Key Club Advisor, Steve Cummings. “Bill has the most affable personality” according to Kiwanis Club President and former city commissioner Leo Grachow and the local merchants eagerly assist Bill with financial support with his endeavors. The great success for the pasta dinner comes from donations from the major sponsors such as Rodriguez Charities, Gulfstream Park and Casino, Sean Cononie, Mardi Gras Casino, the city of Hallandale Beach, Invicta Watches, IESI Corporation and Hallandale Land Ventures. Also the generosity from Nick’s Restaurant, Calvin Ciordano and Associates and the law firm of Becker and Poliakoff added greatly to the bottom line of profitability. Julian relies on food donations from local restaurants and acknowledges Mama Mia’s in Hollywood and Carini’s and Flashback Diner in Hallandale Beach for supplying food and Protano’s Bakery for their delectable rolls and cakes. The Hallandale Beach Cultural Center was filled to capacity with returning patrons who dined on mouthwatering meatballs and ziti and much credit must be shared with our servers from the Hallandale High School Key Club and the Teen Zone Club sponsored by Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation. These young adults set up the room, served dinner and cleaned up in a flawless fashion. The teen zone is sponsored by Ida Smith who must be complimented on her outstanding members and key club members Noemi Lopez, Nemeche Blake, Yendry Ramirez, Sabrina Javellana and Shantavia Lewis displayed great leadership and poise. Many thanks to Amy who is a chef at Nick’s Restaurant in Hallandale Beach for running the kitchen and getting all the food out in a timely fashion. Vice Mayor Julian canvasses the community for raffle prizes and over forty gifts and certificates were collected. This is always a highlight of the event. So many local residents donate their time helping in the kitchen or coordinating the raffles, taking dinner tickets or serving beverages. Many familiar names that must be thanked include Mayor Joy Cooper, Pat Brennan from the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League, City Activist Barbara Southwick who serves on many boards and projects, Ann Henigson and Bill’s mom Elsie who wrapped 400 sets of plastic ware inside the napkins. Erasing Varicose Veins transforms a woman’s legs (and life) As Olivia and her husband prepared for a beach vacation several years back, she wasn’t filled with the excited anticipation you might expect - instead, she was dreading having to show off her legs on the beach. For people like Olivia, varicose veins once painted an unwelcome picture on her legs. Not only were her “Spider Veins” unsightly, they were also the culprits behind daily pain and unbearable cramping. What should have been a dream getaway turned into an anxietyriddled trip. Not only was she selfconscious about her appearance the pain in her legs made it difficult to even stroll along the beach with her husband. It was only a matter of time before the veins seriously began impacting her mobility. Olivia went onto eventually requiring elastic bandages on her legs and a cane just to walk. “At night, I couldn’t sleep because of cramps; and every morning, I needed a leg massage,” she said. “My condition was clearly not getting better and seemed to gradually be getting worse.” Eventually, Olivia had enough. 4 Tips for Rosacea sufferers looking for healthier looking skin and a little known culprit for skin inflammation (BPT) - "I used to wake up in the morning, see myself in the mirror, and I would just get upset," said Brian Doddie - a husband, father and rosacea patient. "All the redness and the bumps on my face made me feel insecure. At work I'd have to give presentations and I would simply get embarrassed. For the longest time, I thought I had acne... until I eventually went to the dermatologist and was given the diagnosis of rosacea. HOW TO LIVE LONGER By Dr. Leonard Pianko M.D. - Living a longer healthy life is a joint venture between you, your family and your doctor. Prevention is the key. Regular checkups are critical. Lab studies and diagnostic tests reveal a lot, alerting the doctor to a developing problem that can be controlled at an early stage. When symptoms appear, the problem already has had an effect. Medications play their role. Although they are compounded with certain actions in mind, medications react differently with each patient. The doctor’s decision is based on symptoms, current medications being taken, other conditions, status of the heart and blood pressure, effects other systems, and general lifestyle of the patient. The doctor monitors them carefully and may try a different plan of treatment. I am a cardiologist, and when I prescribe for my patient, it is a careful balance of medications that are suited to the heart problem in conjunction with other medications that the patient is taking. For example, medications for high blood pressure are not all the same. There are alpha blockers, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, etc. They all have a particular function in controlling the pressure it takes for blood to pump through the heart and then out to the body. Sometimes, we prescribe two or more at the same time. They need to be taken as directed since their interaction has a direct effect on your heart. Supplements. Even though they are over-the-counter, claim to be natural and require no prescription, does not mean that herbals, vitamins and minerals cannot effect your body or medications that you are already taking. As an example, Vitamins A, C and E have anti-coagulant qualities. If you are taking Warfarin, and possibly baby aspirin, think about how you may be intensifying the anticoagulant effects in your blood, putting you at risk for additional bleeding. If an herbal sleep aid helps with your insomnia, it is affecting a level of brain action, which is a chemical reaction. Advise your doctor of the supplements you are considering or already taking. Diet and hydration. When advised to limit salt, sugar, white flour and fried foods, take that seriously. Taking medication to stabilize your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol is a wake-up call, not a license to continue bad habits. A sufficient amount of fluids, particularly water, provides volume in the blood for proper distribution of oxygen through your red blood cells. It is necessary for digestion and elimination, and provides general hydration throughout your system. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrating. Patient’s role. It is very important for patients to take all medications as directed and for the entire time prescribed. Many patients will stop taking their antibiotic when they feel better. This is the worst thing to do, since your body is not entirely rid of the bacteria, and it can re-flourish and return with a vengeance, now resistant to that particular type of medication. Be sure to take medication with at least a half glass of water for quick delivery to the stomach, where it will begin to break up for proper digestion and absorption. Family support is equally important. However, with their concern for you and best intentions, their guidance and advice should be checked out with the doctor, and that includes all the supplements that they are quick to suggest. Serving up a special Easter dinner HERB-CRUSTED RACK OF LAMB 1 (3- to 4-pound) rack of lamb roast 2 cloves of garlic, sliced 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon red wine vinegar 1/4 teaspoon soy sauce 1-1/2 teaspoons black pepper 1-1/2 teaspoons dried thyme 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 2 tablespoons chopped fresh marjoram Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400° F. Cut thin slits in the roast and insert the garlic slices. In a small bowl combine the oil, vinegar, soy sauce, pepper and thyme. Rub the roast with the oil mixture. Coat evenly with rosemary and marjoram. Place the roast on the roasting rack in a shallow pan. Place in the oven and reduce heat to 325° F. Roast 30 minutes. 2. Remove lamb from the oven. Loosely cover the lamb; let it stand 5 to 10 minutes. Serve warm. GLAZED HAM WITH PINEAPPLE-RAISIN
SAUCE Servings: 18 1 (5 pound) fullycooked boneless ham 1 can (6 ounces) frozen pineapple-orange or pineapple juice concentrate 3 tablespoons maple syrup 3 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed 1/3 cup finely chopped onion 1 tablespoon butter 1 1/4 cups water 3/4 cup golden raisins 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 cup white balsamic vinegar 4 teaspoons cornstarch Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Place ham on rack in shallow roasting pan. Bake, uncovered, for 1 1/4 hours, until internal temperature (measured with a meat thermometer) is 140 degrees F. (about 15-18 minutes per pound.) In small saucepan, combine half of the juice concentrate, 3 tablespoons maple syrup, 3 tablespoons vinegar and thyme. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, simmer uncovered,
for 5-10 minutes or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally. Baste ham with glaze the last 15-20 minutes of baking. Remove ham from oven, slice and serve with PineappleRaisinSauce. PINEAPPLE-RAISIN SAUCE: In a medium saucepan, sauté onion in butter until tender. Add remaining juice concentrate, water, raisins, maple syrup and mustard. Stir together 1/4 cup vinegar and cornstarch; stir into raisin mixture. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. HORSERADISHMUSTARD NEW POTATOES Servings: 12 4 pounds new potatoes 1 large red onion, cut into 3/4-inch chunks 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup chicken broth 3/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons horseradish mustard 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 1 teaspoon pink and black peppercorns,
cracked Scrub potatoes; cut in halves or quarters. In a covered Dutch oven, cook potatoes in a small amount of boiling, lightly salted water about 10 minutes or until tender. Drain and return to pan. In medium saucepan, saute onion in butter for 4-5 minutes or until tender. Stir in 1 tablespoon of flour and salt. Add chicken broth. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. In a small bowl, stir together sour cream, horseradish, mustard and remaining 1 tablespoon flour. Stir into broth mixture. Cook and stir until heated through. Pour sauce over potatoes; toss lightly to coat. Transfer to a serving bowl. Sprinkle with chives and cracked peppercorns.
