People keep calling it burnout because the symptoms look familiar on the surface.
Disengagement. Fatigue.
A collapse in motivation.
But the underlying mechanism is different.
Burnout has become the default explanation for nearly every form of workplace distress. It gets cited after layoffs, during reorganizations, and whenever motivation drops without an obvious cause. But burnout no longer explains what people are actually experiencing.
Across industries, professionals are not depleted by effort. They are destabilized by loss. Loss of role. Loss of trajectory. Loss of trust in the basic contract that once made work feel coherent.
This is not burnout. It is career grief.
That distinction matters because when the diagnosis is wrong, every proposed solution misses the mark.
People keep calling it burnout because the symptoms look familiar on the surface.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Celebrates Black History Month
Premiere Performances Of Works From Grammy Nominees Nathalie Joachim And Carlos Simon
Timeless classics meet bold new voices as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by award-winning Music Director Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso, celebrates Black History Month with a standout program. SFSO will present the anticipated Florida premiere of GRAMMY nominee Nathalie Joachim’s Had to Be, an intimate exploration of memory and identity, performed by rising cellist Seth Parker Woods and the orchestral premiere of Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances, a vibrant work filled with spiritual depth. Completing the program, Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony bursts with celebratory energy and elegant precision, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s crowd-pleasing Capriccio espagnol sparkles with irresistible Spanish rhythms on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026 at New World Center in Miami Beach, located at 500 17th Street, Miami Beach, Florida 33139 and on Wednesday, February 18th, 2026 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, located at 707 Northeast 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a preconcert chat with Dr. Alan Mason, professor emeritus of music at Barry University, 30 minutes before each concert, featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the works and composers.
“This program brings together voices from different eras, honoring the timeless foundations of classical music while cele brating the remarkable talent creating music today,” said Maestra Alfonso. “As we recognize Black History Month, we showcase fresh voices shaping the sound of now - part of our ongoing commitment to introducing new music to our audi ences. The magic of live music is that once it begins, we all become one shared energy. Our differences fall away, and the experience speaks a universal language, inviting us to listen with curiosity and con nect - to the music and to each other.”
Haitian American composer Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be draws on Black Dandyism - a cultural movement blending European and Black American male fash ion to convey style, status, and identityas well as broader African diasporic influ ences, including Caribbean musical tra ditions and New Orleans second line cele brations. The three-movement concerto was written for three-time GRAMMYnominated cellist Seth Parker Woods, described by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace” with “mature artistry and willingness to go to the brink.”
“It’s an amalgamation of both beautiful and sweeping Western melodies,” said Woods in a video interview with the New York Philharmonic, where the work premiered in 2024.
Had to Be is positive, prideful, and radical all at once. It represents the perpetually colorful and complex intersections between race, class, gender, power, and style. It honors what it means to be Black and continuously choosing to be free. By coincidence, or perhaps to no surprise, Woods has topped the Best Dressed Lists in Variety, Texas Monthly, and OC Register.
Cellist Seth Parker Woods is a versatile artist and advocate for contemporary music, having premiered numerous concertos written for him, including works by Tyshawn Sorey, Julia Adolphe, and Rebecca Saunders, in addition to Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be. His GRAMMYnominated, autobiographical work Difficult Grace has been performed to critical acclaim at major venues including 92NY, CAP UCLA, and the San Diego Symphony. Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Konzerthaus Dortmund, among others. Since 2022, he has served on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and was appointed Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also held residencies with the Kaufman Music Center and Seattle Symphony and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee

enables us to continue to make smart investments to reliably power Florida’s growth while keeping customer bills low –well below the national average.
The truth is large-scale data centers haven’t quite made it to Florida yet. But we have a friendly business environment, low electricity rates and excellent reliability – so we know it’s only a matter of time. At FPL, it is our job and our legal obligation to deliver electricity to any and all customers who move into our service area. That means we must be proactive and ready. And it’s why, as part of our rate case, we created special rates that apply to all large load customers, including data centers. These rates are designed to shield our existing customers from subsidizing these large load projects.

SFSO is also proud to present its orchestral premiere of Four Black American Dances from GRAMMYnominated African American composer, Carlos Simon, the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center. “Four Black American Dances is an orchestral study of prominent Black American dances. The piece really shows how wide varying the Black American community is throughout history. The Ring Shout derived from enslaved Africans. The second movement, Waltz, is a correlation to wealthy black Americans who were making strides in the 1920s and the Thirties,” said Simon in a video interview with the New York Philharmonic. “This is followed by the third movement, Tap, and concludes with the fourth movement, Holy Dance, which is the joyous dancing that takes place in Black Christian churches.”
Adding to the varied program, SFSO will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 “Haffner,” a fourmovement vibrant, celebratory symphony written in 1782, to honor Mozart’s friend, Sigmund Haffner, and his rise to nobility in Salzberg.
Concluding the evening is the crowdpleasing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, based on Spanish folk songs and dances, and filled with vibrant rhythms that whisk audiences off to exotic, far-off places of the imagination. SFSO’s 28th Season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and time-
that here – that’s why we designed our rates with new consumer protections to ensure we never do. We carefully studied utilities in states that have seen significant data center growth so we could learn from their experience. That was the driving force behind our new large load rates, which are the most thoughtful and customer-protective in the nation.
How do these new large load rates work?
We believe Florida can be home to responsible technology growth without raising electric bills for our customers. The idea is straightforward: The cost-causer (in this case, the data center) should foot the bill – not the general body of customers. Data centers use a lot of power. FPL will need to build new power generation and battery storage to serve them. This is Infrastructure we wouldn’t otherwise build were it not for data centers. So, it makes sense that the data centers are on the hook for those costs. Our new large load rates feature a number of consumer protections, including an Incremental Generation Charge (IGC). That charge

This season’s performances burst with color and power from the sun-drenches skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” to Sibelius’ soul-searching Violin Concerto to Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvorak’s Bohemian Eighth.
From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores including Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Back to the Future, featuring the iconic films screened live with audio and musical accompaniment, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. ensures the large load customer funds 100% of the cost of new power generation needed to serve their data center project. So that covers the new power generation, but what about the power these data centers use on an ongoing basis once their project is up and running? They pay for the power they use and are subject to a minimum bill should they end up using less than they signed up for.
This is the take-or-pay demand charge?
Correct. The data center signs up for a certain amount of power. Once the Infrastructure is built, FPL expects the data center to use that amount of power every month because FPL incurs fixed costs to maintain that capacity. The minimum take-or-pay demand charge ensures the data center pays for that reserved capacity – even if they don’t end up needing all of it.

FPL, there are several steps that must take place before FPL can serve that project. The large load customer must fund an engineering study that evaluates the project’s scope and feasibility, determines the cost to connect to the grid, and when FPL can meet the requested demand and in-service date. To reserve capacity on our system, the customer must meet strict collateral requirements tied to their credit. They must agree to a minimum contract term of 20 years from their in-service date. And they must be able to pay for 100% of the cost of new power generation needed to serve their project. Once in service, they are not only subject to the minimum bill we just discussed – they are also subject to an early exit fee. All these requirements combine to make up the strictest consumer protections in America as it relates to data centers. And they ensure that the projects that do move forward are only the best ones from the most mature and creditworthy companies that intend to stay in Florida, providing tax benefits for communities and jobs for many years.

Skipping The Champagne: Why An Alcohol-Free Valentine’s Day Can Feel More Intimate
Valentine’s Day has a script most of us know by heart: reservations at a dimly lit restaurant, cocktails before dinner, a bottle of wine (maybe champagne) during the meal, then another drink after. Alcohol is so tightly woven into the idea of romance that opting out can feel almost rebellious. Or worse, it can feel boring.
But for many couples, skipping the champagne isn’t about deprivation; it’s about curiosity. What happens when you remove alcohol from one of the most emotionally charged days of the year? As Community Outreach Coordinator at Virginia Recovery Centers (an alcohol and drug rehab in Virginia), I’ve seen how this choice can transform the experience. What many discover is surprising: without the haze, Valentine’s Day often feels quieter, clearer, and far more intimate.
Why Alcohol Became a Valentine’s Day Staple
Alcohol has long been marketed as a shortcut to romance. It promises relaxation, confidence, and emotional openness, which are all appealing qualities on a day that can feel high-pressure. For first dates especially, drinks are framed as a way to “break the ice” and ease nerves. Over time, that logic has expanded beyond dating into long-term relationships. Wine nights become shorthand for connection. Champagne becomes a symbol of celebration. Alcohol stops being optional and starts feeling expected.
But while alcohol can lower inhibitions, it also dulls awareness. It blurs emotional nuance, softens physical sensation, and shortens attention spans. The same substance that makes conversation flow can also make moments slip by unnoticed.
Presence Is the Real Romantic Luxury
One of the biggest differences people notice during alcohol-free Valentine’s Days is presence. Without alcohol pulling attention inward (toward bodily sensations, buzz levels, or mental fog), partners tend to be more tuned in to each other. Eye contact lasts longer. Listening feels easier. Conversations unfold without the subtle impatience that can creep in when alcohol starts dictating the pace of the night.
In a culture obsessed with grand gestures, presence is underrated. Yet being fully there (mentally and emo tionally) is often what makes a moment feel meaningful. A simple dinner at home can feel more romantic than a lavish night out when both people are actually paying attention.
or postponed. On an alcohol-free Valentine’s Day, there’s no chemical cushion. Conversations may feel slower, but they’re often more honest. Expressions of affection come from clarity rather than courage-in-a-glass.
This kind of intimacy can feel vulnerable at first, especially for couples used to bonding over drinks. But that vulnerability is often where trust deepens. Saying “I love you” or “I appreciate you” sober carries a different weight. It lands more solidly because it’s fully intentional.
shift alone is enough to redefine what romance feels like.
Less Drama, Fewer Misfires Valentine’s Day already carries emotional weight: expectations, pressure to “get it right,” lingering insecurities. Alcohol can amplify all of it. A small misunderstanding after a few drinks can spiral into a fight, tone gets misread, old grievances resurface, and more. On the other hand, alcohol-free celebrations tend to feel steadier. Emotional regulation improves and conversations stay clearer. If some
rely on dim lighting or cocktails to feel romantic. Some opt for experiences like massages, art classes, or simply uninterrupted time at home. The key is reframing celebration away from consumption and toward connection. What makes the day special isn’t what’s poured into a glass, but rather how time is spent together.
Navigating the Awkwardness For many people, the biggest hurdle isn’t personal; it’s social. Declining drinks can feel like making a statement, even when it’s not meant that way. On Valentine’s Day especially, opting out of champagne may invite questions or assumptions. The simplest approach is confidence without explanation. “We’re doing something different this year,” or “We’re skipping alcohol tonight,” is usually enough. Most people take their cues from how comfortable you seem.
Emotional Intimacy Without the Buffer Alcohol often acts as an emotional buffer. It takes the edge off vulnerability, which can be helpful, but it also keeps conversations safely surface-level. Compliments come easier, but so do deflections. Difficult feelings get softened
Workforce
From Page 1A
Disengagement. Fatigue. A collapse in motivation. But the underlying mechanism is different. Burnout implies depletion from effort. It suggests that rest, time off, or a lighter workload will restore equilibrium. Career grief is not about effort. It is about loss. Loss of identity. Loss of continuity. Loss of confidence that investment will still be rewarded.
You did not just lose a job. You lost coherence.
Career grief shows up quietly at first. Motivation drops in ways that feel unfamiliar. Focus fragments. Confidence wobbles even in people with long track records of competence. The future starts to feel vague or threatening instead of challenging. People blame themselves. They assume they have lost resilience or ambition. They have not. Their nervous system is responding to instability exactly as it is designed to. The past few years have rewritten the effort reward contract that underpinned modern careers. For decades, the logic was simple. Work hard. Build skill. Stay relevant. Progress would follow. That logic no longer holds. Layoffs arrive without warning. Roles disappear overnight. Entire professions reshape faster than people can adapt. AI accelerates the pace and removes human buffering along the way. When predictability collapses, the nervous system does not interpret it as a professional inconvenience. It reads it as a threat.
That is where career grief begins.
This is not fear of hard work. It is chronic instability. When the ground keeps shifting, the body stays alert. Risk tolerance changes. Long term planning
responsiveness. Many people don’t realize how much alcohol numbs physical experience until it’s gone. Sober touch tends to feel more attuned. Kisses linger. Sensation sharpens. Partners notice each other’s responses more clearly and adjust in real time.
Sex without alcohol often unfolds more slowly and deliberately. There’s less performance pressure and more focus on mutual experience. For some couples, this
narrows. People become more cautious, more guarded, more reactive. Not because they lack courage, but because their system is trying to preserve safety.
You see this everywhere once you know what to look for. High performers who hesitate to commit. Leaders who avoid decisive bets. Professionals who feel inexplicably numb toward roles they once wanted badly. These are not motivation problems. They are regulatory signals.
Career grief is physiological.
Loss registers in the body before it becomes a story in the mind. When identity and role dissolve without ceremony, the system adapts. It tightens. It pulls inward. It prepares for further loss.
That is why mindset based advice falls flat. You cannot reframe your way out of a state your body is maintaining for protection. Optimism does not restore coherence. Hustle does not rebuild trust.
Many people keep pushing anyway. They apply to more roles. They are upskill. They optimize routines. They follow productivity advice with discipline and hope. None of it lands. Each failure deepens the sense that something is wrong with them.
Nothing is. What is broken is the environment that once provided stability, pacing, and relational calibration. Work used to include human rhythm. Informal conversations. Shared stress. Feedback loops that regulated uncertainty. Much of that has disappeared. Automation removes friction. Remote structures thin micro interaction. Performance becomes abstracted from presence.
The result is a system under constant cognitive demand with diminishing relational support. That combination erodes coherence. Career grief often masquerades as fatigue or disengagement. But listen
cation.
Creating Alcohol-Free Valentine’s Traditions Skipping alcohol doesn’t mean skipping romance. In fact, it often opens the door to more creative, intentional traditions. Some couples cook together, turning the evening into a shared project rather than a performance. Others plan daytime dates, such as hikes, museum visits, or long walks. These activities don’t
closely to how people describe it. They say they feel unreal. Disconnected from their own momentum. Less invested in outcomes that once mattered. These are not the words of exhaustion. They are the language of loss.
Grief does not resolve through rest alone. It resolves through meaning making and reconnection. Career grief is no different. The implications extend beyond individual wellbeing. Organizations feel this too. Teams carrying unresolved career grief show subtle but costly shifts. Trust thins. Collaboration slows. Conflict rises under pressure. Decision making becomes conservative or erratic. No performance framework compensates for that.
AI intensifies this dynamic without presenting itself as the cause. Each tool promises efficiency. Each removes another layer of embodied competence or relational rehearsal. Over time, work becomes cleaner and lonelier. Faster and flatter. The nervous system absorbs the cost.
This is not a call to reject technology. It is a call to recognize its side effects.
Career grief requires a different response than burnout. It requires stabilization before optimization. People need environments that restore coherence. Clear roles. Predictable pacing. Human feedback. Shared processing of uncertainty.
Most importantly, they need containers that hold transition without forcing premature reinvention.
Grief has a timeline. When it is rushed or ignored, it hardens. People either disengage or cling to identities that no longer fit. Neither leads to growth.
The people navigating this moment do not need motivational speeches. They need space to recalibrate. To rebuild trust in their own signal. To reestablish belong-
Within relationships, framing matters too. Suggesting an alcoholfree Valentine’s Day as an experiment rather than a rule keeps it collaborative. It’s not about restriction; it’s about seeing what changes when something familiar is removed.
A Different Kind of Romance Romance doesn’t have to be loud, flashy, or intoxicating to be powerful. In fact, some of the most intimate moments are quiet ones, such as shared glances, unhurried conversations, and comfortable silence. Alcohol-free Valentine’s Days often feel less cinematic but more real. There’s no chemical boost, no artificial glow. What’s there is simply the relationship, as it is, in full focus.
For some couples, this clarity is refreshing. For others, it’s revealing. Either way, it offers insight into how connection functions without props.
Choosing Intimacy Over Convention
Skipping the champagne isn’t about rejecting romance. It’s about redefining it! It’s choosing clarity over haze, presence over performance, and connection over convention. Valentine’s Day doesn’t need alcohol to feel special. Sometimes, removing it is exactly what allows intimacy to take center stage.

ing before performance.
Career grief does not mean you are failing. It means something you invested in has ended or fundamentally changed. Naming that truth is not weakness. It is orientation.
Burnout language lets systems off the hook. Grief points to loss. And loss requires reckoning. When coherence returns, ambition often follows. Not the brittle kind driven by fear, but a steadier form rooted in clarity and self trust. That is how people reengage. Not by pushing through grief, but by moving with it. Career grief is not the end of motivation. It is the beginning of recalibration. The sooner we stop calling it burnout, the sooner real recovery becomes possible.

Dr. Deb Zoran, a Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, provides guidance to cat owners on choosing the most nutritious food to support their cat’s health and well-being.
The Wet Vs. Dry Debate
When considering whether to feed your cat wet or dry food, owners should understand the benefits of both options.
“The differences are primarily physical — texture, moisture, and how they are processed,” Zoran said. “Wet is cooked, while dry is extruded, made into pellets, and then cooked. Wet food is about 7580% water, and dry is less than 5% water, unless it’s a ‘soft moist’ product.”
In addition to its crunch-based texture, dry foods tend to have higher fiber and other carbohydrates, and while canned foods can vary widely, they can have a higher protein content.
Because the majority of a cat’s daily hydration needs are typically met with their diet, according to Zoran, wet food goes a long way in ensuring adequate water intake, which is especially important in the prevention of constipation and maintaining a good urine output. However,
foods, so if dry foods are fed, portion control is essential to prevent overfeeding and weight gain.
“Most adult cats only need about 200 calories a day, and if you are feeding both canned and dry food you have to account for both,” Zoran said. “A good rule of thumb is that if you are feeding a volume of food that is larger than the cat’s head, you are overfeeding.”
Because of the importance of portion control, Zoran advises against the use of demand-feeder methods — in which the cat triggers a dispenser — and free feeding.
“Indoor spayed and neutered cats are particularly prone to weight gain because they get less exercise, less stimulation, more food, and more calorie-dense food,” Zoran said. “So, it’s really crucial to control their intake.”
Selecting A Brand
When choosing a food brand or consistency, owners should consider your cat’s individual needs. Paying attention to the specific nutritional statements on packaging can help owners choose a brand that is trustworthy and consistent in offering a well-balanced meal, according to Zoran.
shelves have ‘add ons’ or ‘flavor enhancers,’ which are not formulated to be a complete diet on their own, so that is very important to pay attention to.”
Another indicator of quality is found in brands that have been on the market for a long time and have earned credibility through consumer consistency.
“There are new or smaller pet food companies that are not necessarily bad, but they may not have established or published quality controls or nutritionists on staff,” Zoran said. “A lot of people like these foods — they appeal to people because of how they are marketed — but, you should consult your veterinarian or contact the company for specific information about their product.”
Feline Food Flexibility
In addition, understanding and monitoring a cat’s eating habits are vital in maintaining a healthy diet and regular feeding routine.
“There are some unique behavioral and preference considerations for cats that help determine what kind of food they prefer — whether that’s dry vs. canned, flaked vs. pate, and so on,” Zoran said. “Unlike dogs, cats usually will not easily transition to another food if they were not

tens tend to grow attached to that taste and texture. This can lead to problems later in life if the cat develops a health problem that is best managed with a wet food diet, such as urinary tract disease, kidney disease, or diabetes.
“A cat that prefers dry food may refuse to eat wet food or will, at least, be very resistant to change due to having the learned food preference,” Zoran said. “The easiest way to prevent this issue is to feed some canned and some dry food every day throughout life.”
Meeting a cat’s basic nutritional needs is one of the most important responsibilities as a pet owner, one that may involve some trial and error as you work to balance your cat’s needs with its preferences.
“Remember, indoor cats can’t supplement their diet with outdoor prey, so they rely completely on us to select the food that meets their needs,” Zoran said.

Guy Harvey Hooks World Premiere
At the 40th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival As Official Closing Night Film Gala
24–time Emmy Award-winning director and producer Nick Nanton—dubbed “America’s Biographer” by Larry King— along with Astonish Entertainment and Abundance Studios, will unveil the world festival premiere of Guy Harvey at the 40th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF). The film, an aweinspiring cinematic portrait of worldrenowned marine wildlife artist, scientist, conservationist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Guy Harvey, will screen Saturday, February 28th at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the cast and crew. The film has been selected to close out the prestigious film festival with a celebratory meet and greet event to take place immediately after the Q&A at the same location.
The Guy Harvey documentary explores how one man transformed his artistic gift into a global movement for ocean awareness. From painting marlin and sharks in the Caribbean to launching the Guy Harvey Foundation, a Non-Profit that collaborates with local, national and international organizations to conduct scientific research, provide funding to affiliated researchers, and develop cutting-edge educational programs for educators, Dr. Harvey’s journey intertwines art, adventure, and environmental activism in a breathtaking exploration of passion and purpose. Filmed across the Cayman Islands, Panama, California and Florida, the documentary features stunning underwater cinematography, exclusive interviews, and unprecedented access to Dr. Harvey’s creative and scientific world.
“The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival is truly honored to host the world premiere of the Guy Harvey documentary. As the fishing capital of the world, Fort Lauderdale is the perfect home for a film that celebrates marine life, conservation, and the legacy of one of the most iconic ocean artists of our time,” said Lisa Grigorian, FLIFF President and CEO.
The Guy Harvey documentary stars Dr. Guy Harvey, fellow artist and conservationist Robert Wyland, wildlife sculptor Kent Ullberg, photographer Jim Abernethy, Guy’s children, Alex and Jessica Harvey; along with dozens of other close friends and colleagues.
The film is directed by Nick Nanton, edited by Nick Ruff and produced by Katie Tschopp. Director of photography is Kevin Sada and cinematographers include Carlo Alberto Orecchia, Mike Dunn, Nicolas Tschirhart, Brock Nanton, and Shawn Vela.
The film is produced by Astonish Entertainment in association with DNA Films and Abundance Studios®, which is a collective of entrepreneurs, professionals, and philanthropists dedicated to creating and sharing media to foster a world of enlightened thinking and abundant action.
“I applaud Nick Nanton and his team for artfully capturing and highlighting four decades of exploration, research, fishing, diving, education and conservation into such a powerful film about what has become, and still is, an unforgettable journey,” says Dr. Harvey.
A Jamaican native, Dr. Guy Harvey developed an early reverence for the sea that went far beyond sport or spectacleit became his language. Before his paintings ever hung in galleries or his art appeared on shirts, Dr. Harvey was a scientist in the truest sense: a diver, fish tagger, and chronicler of the untamed.
His canvases were the meeting point of precision and wonder, each brushstroke a data point in a lifelong study of movement, color, and coexistence. Decades later, his work has transcended the walls of art and commerce to become a cultural shorthand for marine respect — an emblem of what it means to see the ocean not as a resource, but as a relationship.
“I’ve grown up with Guy Harvey - the brand- being a part of everyday life. Literally every day I see someone wearing one of his signature shirts,” says Director Nick Nanton. “What I became enamored with was Dr. Guy Harvey the artist and his love for the ocean and incredible dedication to conservation through his research. Guy Harvey bridges worlds — he’s as much a scientist as he is an artist, and his work has changed how millions of people see the ocean. This film celebrates not just his achievements, but the movement he’s inspired to preserve our planet’s most vital resource,” says Nanton.
Nick Nanton has built a career on transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary capturing the unseen drive behind icons, innovators, and world changers. Known throughout the industry for his precision, empathy, and editorial instinct, Nanton approaches every subject as both storyteller and architect, shaping narratives that linger long after the credits roll.
His work bridges documentary filmmaking and social impact, blending the pacing of a Hollywood feature with the authenticity of real life. As the creative force behind Astonish Entertainment, he has carved out a signature style that’s equal parts cinematic craft and moral compass and the kind of filmmaking that doesn’t just observe its subjects, but amplifies their humanity.
The film has just been completed with festival and broadcast premiere plans targeting major international documentary and environmental showcases before theatrical and streaming rollouts.

Keeping An Eye On Tallahassee
The Biggest Threat To Our Communities The Notion Of Reducing Or Eliminating Property Taxes
It is official, we are in the middle of Florida’s Legislative Session. Over the years, as a municipal elected official, I have learned to wait to see what Bills will pass and what will fail. I learned a good lesson from a former state legislator who worked hard to kill bad Bills. So many ideas brought forward that simply do not help create a stronger Florida. They erode home rules and create unfunded mandates.
This year, over 1,200 Bills have been filed. I can think of many in the past years that should have never made it out of committee let alone become law. Deregulation of Vacation Rentals is a big one. It is not that they are bad, they simply do not belong everywhere. Local control was removed and now we are all dealing with the fallout.
Another is allowing at home businesses that bring customers into residen-
City of Hollywood Programs Help Homeowners
The City of Hollywood continues to invest in neighborhood stability and housing quality by offering programs that help eligible homeowners make important repairs and upgrades to their homes. Through the Neighborhood Pride Program and the Housing Rehabilitation Program, residents may receive financial assistance for improvements that enhance safety, improve energy efficiency and help preserve the long-term value of their homes.
The Neighborhood Pride Program provides eligible homeowners with a conditional grant of up to $40,000 for exterior improvements. Funding may be used for projects such as roof replacement, impact windows and doors, fencing, driveway repairs, exterior painting and landscaping. The program is designed to help maintain neighborhood appearance while improving resilience and safety for residents.
Homeowners can learn more about eligibility requirements and income limits by visiting: www.hollywoodfl.org/1194/ Neighborhood-Pride-Program-ILA.
For homeowners in need of more extensive repairs, the City’s Housing Rehabilitation Program offers assistance through a deferred loan of up to $150,000, with no monthly payments required. Eligible improvements may include HVAC systems, electrical upgrades, roofing, structural repairs and other interior or exterior improvements that address health, safety or code-related concerns. Additional information and eligibility details are available at: www.hollywoodfl .org/200/Home-Rehabilitation-Repair.
Both programs include eligibility requirements and income limits, and interested homeowners are encouraged to review program guidelines online

tial neighborhoods. While people may think what a great idea. This has to be great for businesses, but not for neighbors with a business next door with employees and customers coming and going.
The state also continues to remove local control when it comes to Development and Redevelopment. Live Local is a big one. It has changed the landscape of our communities. Property owners can build up to 90 units per acre so long as 40% is affordable. It also provides the height can be as high as the closest building within 3/4 of a mile or capped at 10 stories. The other side of this is there is a need for affordable housing to be created.
This year, the biggest threat to our communities is the notion of reducing or eliminating Property Taxes. There are to date over 8 Bills proposed on this issue alone. The reality is the state does not collect Property Taxes. Property Taxes are
collected by local governments to provide services. Cities around the state rely on property taxes for vital services. The false narrative being created for political points and future runs for higher office will adversely impact every community. Some communities more than others. The reality is nothing is free. If you want safe livable communities, it costs money. These are a few Bills to watch. AI Bill moving that will protect minors but also does not allow local government renewal of some AI contracts. There is a Bill for Drug Price Transparency, but it does not seem to touch or cap prices. There is a Bill to regulate certain Medical and Paramedic Licensing. There is another proposal to further erode local control over land use. Of particular interest is cutting our ability for Impact Fees and Denial of Applications. There is a proposal once again to repeal some No-Fault Insurance Coverage. I call these Insurance Company
Relief Bills guised as help for motorists.
There is a Bill to allow Medicare
to
rates for payments and reimbursement under Medicaid, it also provides for rate payments to dentists. So, while we are halfway through, you can see what takes place in Tallahassee will have overreaching implications. We will be following the Property Tax Issue very closely. In the coming weeks, we will be hosting a Town Hall to share how these various proposals could impact our City. We will also discuss how the Lost Revenues may be made up in the form of Direct Fees. Again, there is not one thing that is FREE! We must provide Police, Fire, EMS, Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Services. Code Enforcement and Building Safety are also vital. The free trip to parks may end up being all feebased as well.
As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org. Please visit me on my Facebook page at: Mayor Joy Cooper. Like! Follow! And share!

At-Risk Youth Nationwide
National PAL Board Appoints Dr. Stephen M. Coan As President And CEO enforcement leaders throughout the nation to grow the PAL mission,” Dr. Coan said. “Our mission has never been more important in preventing youth crime and violence, protecting youth from the increasing threat of cyberspace crimes, and increasing respect for law enforcement. I have always had deep respect and appreciation for the work of thousands of officers and PAL staff who work tirelessly, every day, to improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable youth in our nation.”
The National Police Athletic/Activities League’s (National PAL) Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Stephen M. Coan as President and Chief Executive Officer, choosing a highly experienced and accomplished education and Non-Profit leader for the youth mentoring organization’s top position. National PAL oversees and supports more than 300 local PAL chapters across the country, including 32 in Florida.
Dr. Coan, who most recently served as National PAL’s Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, has been involved with the organization for many years and joined its leadership team in 2024. His priorities have included modernizing governance and operations and providing services and support for local PAL affiliates run by police and sheriff departments across the country, including Florida chapters in Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, North Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Coral Gables, Miami Gardens, Miami Beach, North Miami Beach, Gainesville, Davie, West Palm Beach, Melbourne, Hollywood, Key West, Lakeland, Palm City, Doral, Miramar, Palatka, Sunrise, St. Petersburg, Green Cove Springs, Nokomis, Hallandale Beach, Boynton Beach, and Eustis (some communities have multiple chapters).
“Dr. Coan has a keen understanding of National PAL and the needs of its chapters as well as a proven commitment to working on behalf of at-risk youth nationwide,” said Kenneth Ragland, Interim Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Director of Henrico, Virginia, PAL. “This is a transformative moment for the PAL Organization as we launch a new governing and organizational structure that will best meet the needs of our chapters well into the future.”
National PAL and its nationwide local chapters promote the prevention of juvenile crime and violence by building relationships between youth, law enforcement officers, and communities through positive engagement, sports, wellness programs, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programming. As President and CEO, Dr. Coan will lead all aspects of National PAL’s operations, including strategic planning, fundraising, program development, membership, finances, external relations, and marketing.
Dr. Coan’s appointment comes as the organization is expanding its offerings for youth, including an initiative that promotes resiliency and personal growth; a partnership with NFL FLAG, the National Football League’s flag football program; and two additional corporate partnerships aimed at providing children with hands-on STEAM learning experiences that will be announced later this year. The NFL FLAG partnership was rolled out at three local PAL affiliates last fall, including the Hollywood, Florida Chapter.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with our hundreds of chapters nationwide and law
Dr. Coan previously led several Non-Profit and youth-serving organizations as CEO, focusing on common themes of mentoring, connecting law enforcement with children, developing academic pathways for at-risk youth, career awareness, STEM skills, environmental stewardship, and workforce development. He also served in leadership positions in higher education and as a volunteer and professional youth worker. Dr. Coan’s appointment was lauded by police leaders.
“Everywhere I’ve been – Boston, New York City, Los Angeles – one common denominator that determined the success of the police department was the trust of the communities we served,” said William J. Bratton, the Former Commissioner of the New York and Boston Police Departments and Former Chief of the Los Angeles Police. “A large part of that effort was – and still is -- fostering mutual respect and understanding between young people and police officers, and no organization is better suited for that mission than National PAL and its approximately 300 local chapters. Dr. Coan gets it – his vision of how law enforcement officers and children can work together to enable brighter futures and safer communities is exactly what is needed in the field of policing today.”
Added Former Boston Police Commissioner William G. Gross: “Studies show that juvenile crime drops in neighborhoods where police oversee youth programs. Reducing crime is important; equally so is the flip side—protecting young people from criminal activity. Under the leadership of Dr. Coan, National PAL and Police Athletic Leagues across the country will continue to take even greater strides in changing young lives for the better and building stronger communities.”
Dr. Coan serves on the New England Commission for Higher Education, the nation’s oldest body for accrediting colleges and universities. As a police commissioner in Connecticut, he is a member of the Police Commissioner Association of Connecticut.
About National PAL
The National Association of Police Athletic/ Activities Leagues, Inc. (National PAL) and its Chapters work nationwide promoting the prevention of juvenile crime and violence by building relationships among kids, cops, and communities through positive engagement. There are more than 300 PAL chapters throughout the United States, serving over two million youth annually. It is the premier model for modern community policing and connecting cops to kids.
