As the community begins to rebound from the pandemic, Purim - a holiday that includes a custom of dressing up and wearing masks - will be celebrated locally with covid-safe versions of the traditional observances. Billed as the most joyous date on the Jewish calendar, the daylong holiday commemorates the nullification in 356 B.C.E. of a Persian decree calling for the extermination of the Jewish people throughout the Persian Empire as told in the biblical Book of Esther. In addition to the mitzvot of the holiday, a traditional custom is dressing up in costumes and masks, to recall that the miracle of Purim was disguised in natural events. The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown of Thursday, Feb 25th and ends at nightfall on Friday, Feb 26th, going right into Shabbat. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.” I encourage you to contact your local Chabad or synagogue to see what they’re doing to celebrate. When it comes to the development of vaccines, the next few months following the first few stages of its distribution could be critical in terms of the overall outcome of the pandemic. In the US, your personal health record (such as name and social security numbe), including healthcare data, is currently protected under the Privacy Act of 1974. Supposed In-Home Vaccinations through Medicare: Fraudsters claiming to be from Medicare may offer seniors inhome vaccination appointments and request a senior’s Medicare card in order to schedule, but this too is a scam. While Medicare cards no longer use Social Security numbers, the card number is still private data that could be used to commit Medicare fraud and should be protected. Additionally, know that Medicare representatives will never visit seniors at home nor call to sell something. To find

a Consumer Alert warning those who have received vaccinations not to share vaccination cards online. Vaccination cards issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention include the recipient’s full name, birthdate and vaccine location—information scammers can use to hack online accounts or commit identity fraud. Additionally, these cards may be used to create convincinglooking fake vaccine documentation. Currently in Florida, persons of 65 years of age and older, health care personnel with direct patient contact and residents and staff of long-term care facilities are prioritized to receive a vaccine. Things Retirees Will Wish They Had Known Sooner Many people planning for retirement anticipate those postworking years eagerly, ready to veg out after a life of toil. Others plan with greater anxiety, unsure whether they even have an identity without their jobs. But it may be that retirement these days is far different from what either point of view envisions. “We all have made decisions based on the information we had at the time, but later realized we would have planned differently if we knew then what we know now,” says Patti Hart, co-author with her husband, Milledge, of The Resolutionist: Welcome to the Anti-Retirement Movement. “That’s definitely true when it comes to planning for retirement.” The Harts don’t even think of themselves as retirees, but as “resolutionists,” constantly challenging themselves to improve. “I’m busier now than I’ve ever been,” Milledge Hart says. “I’m using this time to be a better me than I could when my days were structured and my time was spoken for.” With that said, the Harts share five things future retirees may wish they had known sooner: Retirement isn’t what it used to be. Most people’s vision of retirement is built on what the people around them did, but that vision is outdated. “Many of us watched our parents or grandparents settle into a quiet, nondescript life,” Milledge Hart says. “We’ve seen the stereotypical

portrayal of aging and irrelevant ‘retirees’ on TV shows and in the movies.” But many retirees today are much more vibrant than those stereotypes and have no intention of sitting quietly on a front porch while the world passes them by. People have more time in this phase of life than previous generations. Anyone who expects retirement to be a few short years tacked on to the end of their working life could be in for an awakening. In actuality, this period could last 20 to 30 years or more. The average 65-year-old man can expect to live another 18 years and the average 65-
year-old woman nearly 21 more years, according to the Social Security Administration. And those, remember, are averages. “Some people could spend more years in their postcareer life than they did building their career,” Patti Hart says. “Knowing and understanding what that means will help you plan better.” It’s important to constantly prepare for the next phase. The Harts acknowledge they should have been planning earlier than they did. Instead, time slipped by. “The horizon is closer than it looks,” Milledge Hart says. So, when should you get serious about planning for those post-
career years? “Right now would be a good time,” he says. “But definitely, the sooner the better.” Retirees need to redefine their metrics. The Harts say it’s important for people to redefine how they measure success in this phase of life because it’s different from how they likely measured success in their career days. “The goals are likely to be more qualitative than quantitative,” Patti Hart says. “For example, one of our metrics one year was to enhance our celebrations. We found that many holidays and special events were filled with unnecessary stress and were too materially focused. We decided
to eliminate event-driven gift giving.” That simple change, she says, improved their lives substantially. Being a resolutionist is fun. If someone had told the Harts when they were in their 30s that their “retirement” years would be filled with so much fun, laughter, and fulfillment, they would have been skeptical. “We laugh more now than we’ve laughed at any other stage in our life,” Milledge Hart says. “This phase is instilled with so much adventure, and it’s a feeling that comes from within rather than the happiness of achieving a certain stock price.” “I wish I had known sooner that I could say goodbye to the corporate world and still be interesting and relevant,” Patti Hart says. “I wish I had known that retirement is yours to define. I successfully defined my role in the business world, but it didn’t dawn on me that I could also reinvent retirement. I don’t know why. Over the past months, our City has begun to reopen our playgrounds. Regretfully, people are still not following the mask mandates when social distancing is not available. No large parties without an application to both our City and the County. These infractions are even more evident at Joe Scavo Park. While our parks are public, we are all in this together and everyone needs to realize that we are still in the COVID-19 Pandemic. There are new variants, people still can carry the virus and be asymptomatic. The last straw at Scavo Park were visitors defecating, not just once, but multiple times. Yes, it is very gross! The bathrooms are closed to keep people safe. So, residents need to plan to relieve themselves before leaving home. Out of 18 parks, this area has become the worst. Residents have been verbally abusing each other
and our staff. Our staff will be calling the police for noncompliance to the rules. We are also putting up a permanent decorative safety fence around the playground. In other news, I have spent time researching and posed questions pertaining to our tennis center operating agreement, in hopes to get it reopened and amended at our last meeting. After a lively discussion, debating the merits of our ability to amend the contract, it still stands as is. My concerns with the contract were not, “who” but “which” rules were set in the contract. The operator will have control over all of the clay courts and all of the revenue from them. Tournaments can be held once a month, they can only occur after 11:00 a.m. and they need to be approved by the City. The City has access to audit, but I shared a concern over the accounting system that they were going to use, they are
not required to use our RecTrack. I am a tennis player, so, I understand how busy the courts can get during season. It is still not clear how reservations will be made to ensure that residents will not be shut out. Currently, there is a rule that a minimum of half of the courts must be open for members. Courts will be open to residents and nonresident members without any directive to prioritize. The other courts, including the clay courts, can be used for private, group lessons and clinics. The operator will set fees for the courts, but they cannot increase more than 10% per year. Like other facilities that utilize a fee for a service model, there is an ability to apply for financial aid. In addition to an annual membership, $160 for single residents, $250 for a two-member family, $350 for family a of 4 and for non-residents, respectfully, the prices are: $200, $350
and $450. There is also a rental fee of $6 for lights. Premium membership (clay) will be for residents, $35 - $65 and will be $55 $75 for non-residents. The clinic’s fees will be $25 for adults and $30 for non-resident adult. Junior clinic’s will be $18 - $25 for residents and $25 - $35 for non-residents. There will also be tennis camps for $220 - $250 for residents and $250 - $300 for nonresidents. There is some good news when it comes to our new facility, the operator was committed to a $300,000 contribution. This agreement was to build extra clay courts. It was not given up front before construction, which was presented. At the signing of the contract, however, there was a deposit made of $50,000. The next $50,000, will be made once the center gets it’s certificate of occupancy. In addition, the contractor will be required to make a deposit of $100,000, to-
wards a reserve building repair fund. The contractor is also going to provide building furnishings and an alarm system for the building. There will be a Pro Shop and a café. The contractor receives full profit on both. The center is set to open, the spring of 2021. Last Friday, I, along with Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub, hosted a public meeting with Florida Ombudsman Spencer Hennings. He was appointed to the office in 2020, by Governor Ron DeSantis. He is a graduate of The University Of Miami Law School. He brings energy, expertise and fresh eyes to the vital oversight of the condominiums. The office oversees elections, ensures that the condos are following regulations and can investigated for fraud. The department does not have the ability to prosecute, but, it works directly with local law enforcement agencies to prosecute for
fraud. As a matter of fact, I had a chance to meet Attorney Hennings at City Hall, while filing paperwork against one of our condos, here, in the City. He shared some really great information on the services his office provides and has made himself available to answer questions. An interesting tidbit I learned, was that unit owners can require the board of directors to hire an election monitor. If 15% of the unit owners petition for this, their office will provide them for a charge, but, they can run the election. In the past, we have provided police, when requested. His goal is to start a robust education program to help stakeholders understand the rules and regulations. He is also working to pass a bill to require all of the condominiums to have a website. He commented, that our new ordinance is a great step and should become a model for others. Once our City opens full-time, I will be working with Commissioner Taub, to see, if we can offer parttime office space right here, in Hallandale Beach. Last year, our City passed cutting edge legislation, called the Condo Transparency Act. This was the brainchild of Commissioner Taub and result of the hard work that, she and candidate for City Commission, Dimitry Yakubovich. The law requires that every condo must submit specific documents to the City, name of the association, the business address and the legal description of properties, governed by the association, name and contact information for the property manager, or designated contact person for the association. List of all officers and directors of the association, with their contact information, the website for the association, if any, an impression of the corporate seal of the association, a legible copy of the By-Laws, a list of planned capital projects, if any, from the date of application through October 1st of the following year. It must specify the location where all of the building permits for work in common areas shall be posted during construction, documentation, budget, audits, projects, a contact for someone that will be on the property for any emergency scenarios. Warning To Remote Workers: Out Of Sight Could Mean Out Of Job
Although debate continues about whether the business world will return to normal even after most people have the COVID-19 vaccine, the expectation is that many companies will soon call employees back to the office. Some workers may still get to work part-time from home, and some businesses will make remote work permanent. But tension between owners and workers is building as it becomes evident many employees are resistant to giving up working from home. In a survey, 65% said they want to work remotely full-time after the pandemic. And in a poll conducted by LiveCareer, 29% of working professionals said they would quit if they couldn’t
continue working remotely. But those who push back against ownership’s preference to return to the office might paint themselves into a corner, especially if they aren’t in a position to quit, says Rod Robertson, Managing Partner of Briggs Capital (www.briggscapital.com), international entrepreneur, and author of Winning at Entrepreneurship: Insider’s Tips on Buying, Building, and Selling Your Own Business. “The expected stimulus money will dissipate by the third quarter and as companies continue to struggle, the cuts will begin,” Robertson says. “Once we reach herd immunity, companies will be deciding whether it makes sense to keep expensive office space. “Corporate gravity will begin to pull key workers back to the office, and there will be resistance from employees. And those companies that do choose to go remote at least part of the
time may still downsize. The bottom line for workers is, if they want to work remotely, they would be wise to take the extra steps to ensure they stand out.” Robertson says employees who continue to work mostly from home should do these things to keep their performance and communication levels high: Show up. Even if a company allows employees to work from home permanently, Robertson says they would be wise to go to the office at least one day each week. “Out of sight might also mean out of mind, or out of job, when it’s time to trim the roster,” he says. “Working from a distance all the time is going to lower your skill level, your engagement, and your productivity. Employees need to make the time to have facetime in the office and stay in the groove with ownership and management. You can’t do that as well at home relying on technology.” Show the human touch. “When we achieve herd immunity, face-to-face meetings with co-workers, managers and clients should be 20 to 25% of someone’s portfolio of time,” Robertson says. “Zoom meetings are a pain because you have
to set them up. Remote employees should prioritize live voice communication with colleagues, managers, and clients in order to stay in the game. Picking up the phone to talk with someone keeps the relationship alive and brings more clarity than constantly texting or emailing.” Push your boss to measure you quantitatively. “Woe to the remote employees who believe they are not under increasing scrutiny – downsizing is on the way,” Robertson says. “The good employees working at home will have more reporting mechanisms in place. Show your boss your genuine enthusiasm by being proactive and coming up with more measurables for your performance.” Do extracurricular work. “The question is, how can you be front-and-center with the boss?” Robertson says. “One way is to do extracurricular work by bringing relevant and helpful articles to ownership. Develop a thesis for those articles to show that you’re a thought leader.
