5 Can’t Miss Moments At The Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival 2026 By Merilee Kern, MBA

Each January, Greater Fort Lauderdale becomes a dynamic playground for food lovers as the Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival returns for its 2026 run from January 19th through January 25th. The festival brings together coastal charm, culinary artistry and community spirit in a weeklong celebration that unfolds across beaches, parks, art districts and acclaimed dining rooms. As Broward County’s premier gastronomic event, it offers an immersive journey through the region’s rich and diverse food culture. This year as always, guests

can expect an exciting mix of celebrity chef appearances, collaboration dinners, hands-on classes, wine experiences and family friendly gatherings. The festival also carries a meaningful purpose, with proceeds benefiting Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. With a decidedly wide selection of events, deciding where to begin can feel overwhelming. Yet five standout experiences capture the very best the festival has to offer. Wok ‘n Roll officially ignites the festivities on January 22nd, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Las Olas Intracoastal Pro-

menade Park. This high energy Asian street food and music celebration is curated by Chefs Alex Kuk and Diego Ng and hosted by celebrity chef Clarice Lam. The park comes alive with sizzling woks, bold aromatics and creative dishes inspired by the Asian diaspora. Guests wander the waterfront sampling innovative bites from top local chefs while live music fuels the atmosphere. With its mix of cultural flair, culinary artistry and vibrant energy, Wok and Roll is the ideal way to launch the festival weekend. Food & Wine, Page 5A

One of the newest mistakes travelers make is also one of the oldest: forgetting their paperwork. It happened to Katharine Nohr when she tried to fly to New Zealand. Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu, was so used to traveling to Europe that she assumed she didn’t need a visa to enter New Zealand. But she did. “I couldn’t check in for my flight,” she remembers. “The agent waved me away rudely and said I had to get a visa online.” Travelers are making all kinds of new mistakes. These include failing to do research or worse, outsourcing it to an AI, and not giving themselves enough time to make a flight connection. But one mistake towers above all of them -- and I’ll tell you about it in a moment. Why visas are an old problem -and a new problem Visas are a constant problem because the requirements keep Travel Mistakes, Page 6A

10 Ways AI Is Ending Car Buying Chaos Why Tapping AI To Negotiate The Best Car Deal Has Become A No Brainer By Merilee Kern, MBA

Buying a new car should be fun, exciting and rewarding. Sadly, for most consumers, it’s among the most stressful purchases they’ll ever make. Hidden fees, opaque pricing and highpressure tactics have long defined the retail auto experience. Meanwhile, dealerships themselves are struggling with inefficiency, burnout and outdated sales models. “That’s all changing in real time,” says automotive AI expert Zach Shefska, CarEdge CEO. “Already making a notable impact, artificial intelligence is completely rewriting the rules of car buying, bringing transparency, efficiency and trust to an industry that has resisted modernization for decades.”

Here are ten reasons AI is reshaping how cars will be bought and sold in the years ahead. 1. Transparency Replaces Guesswork AI tools are collecting realtime pricing data from thousands of dealerships nationwide, exposing hidden markups, inflated add-ons and misleading “great deal” badges. This transparency helps shoppers see what cars really cost before setting foot in a showroom, restoring trust to a process long defined by uncertainty. 2. Negotiation Becomes Objective Instead of relying on emotion or sales pressure, AI uses data to evaluate fair pricing and even

Space Adventures And Hands-On Family Fun, 10A

negotiate with dealerships. Consumers gain an impartial advocate that compares offers, identifies inflated costs and secures competitive out-the-door prices without the stress of haggling. 3. Spam-Free Communication AI systems can now act as intermediaries, contacting multiple dealerships on behalf of the buyer while shielding their personal email and phone number. This eliminates the flood of follow-up calls and promotional messages that typically follow an online inquiry. 4. Personalized Vehicle Matching Rather than scrolling through hundreds of listings, buyers can describe what matters most— budget, style, range, safety, or

performance—and AI can instantly match them with the most relevant models available in real time. This turns overwhelming search results into precise, curated recommendations. 5. Real-Time Market Intelligence AI continuously monitors

national and regional pricing trends, interest rates and incentive programs, allowing consumers to identify when and where to buy. This data-driven insight gives shoppers an edge once reserved for industry insiders. Car Buying, Page 4A

Florida Counties Recover Millions In Lost Tax Revenue Using AI-Powered Rental Data Intelligence Deckard Technologies has helped Florida counties recover millions of dollars in lost tax revenue over the past year and significantly improved short-term rental compliance. As Florida communities continue grappling with the challenges of managing short-term rentals, Deckard Technologies’ data intelligence platform is helping local governments bring fairness, accountability and transparency back to the rental economy. Across the state, hundreds of thousands of vacation rentals operate as commercial lodging enterprises, from beachfront homes to condos and cottages but many go unregistered or underreported, leading to lost tax revenue and unfair competition for compliant operators. By leveraging artificial intelligence and publicly available data, Deckard Technologies enables counties to locate unlicensed properties, verify compliance and recover revenue that supports essential public services. In Florida’s Monroe County, Deckard’s partnership helped officials find rental properties that were operating without the required registration. By identifying these properties accurately, the county recovered more than eight hundred thousand dollars in unpaid taxes between April 2023 and March 2024. This success did not require a collection agreement with platforms like Airbnb or VRBO. Instead, the county was able to secure the revenue on its own through proper identification and enforcement. In Marion County, registered shortterm rentals surged from 131 in early 2023 to more than 1,600 by early 2025, reflecting a dramatic increase in compliance rates. “Before working with Deckard Technologies, I was finding short-term rentals on my own, and it took hours upon hours just to identify a handful of accounts,” said Tammy McCann, Marion County Department Clerk. “Their technology completely streamlined that process and helped us more than double the number of registered rentals in Marion County.” “Our mission is to be the most responsible and effective data intelligence partner for local governments,” said Nick Del Pego, CEO of Deckard Technologies. “We don’t create new data, we organize and analyze what’s already public, just like a search engine. If a property owner advertises a rental online, it’s part of the public record, and we help cities make sense of that information responsibly. What makes Deckard different is how securely and ethically we handle that data; we never share more than is required, and every action goes through internal review to protect privacy and uphold public trust. Local governments deserve insights they can use without compromising the integrity of their communities.” Deckard’s platform monitors listings across thousands of online sources, including Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com, and regional vacation rental sites. Their AIdriven matching engine connects each listing to verified property records, aerial imagery and other open-source data points, producing high-confidence results, which empower county staff to make informed decisions about enforcement and policy. The company’s approach allows local governments to operate proactively rather than reactively, providing tools to identify violations, streamline registration and licensing, and restore balance to housing

From beachfront homes to condos and cottages, many go unregistered or underreported, leading to lost tax. markets where short-term rentals have expanded rapidly. Following the success seen in Marion and Monroe Counties, Deckard is working with jurisdictions across the country to replicate Florida’s model for fair, databacked compliance. With many states facing similar housing and tourism pressures, the company’s leadership believes its technology can play a vital role in ensuring that every community captures the revenue it is owed while protecting quality of life for residents. “As a member of the Florida Tourism Development Tax Association, I can tell you these challenges are not unique to Marion County,” McCann said. “Every community is looking for ways to manage short-term rentals responsibly, and having

a reliable, data-driven partner like Deckard makes a huge difference.” “We’re proud that our platform is not just about technology, but about civic impact,” Del Pego added. “Our goal is to help governments everywhere understand their local rental landscape, enforce laws fairly, and strengthen the foundation of public trust that keeps communities running.” Founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Diego, Deckard Technologies provides AI-driven solutions that help municipalities manage short and long-term rentals, foreclosures, and vacant properties. Its mission is to empower governments with the insights and tools they need to maximize compliance and unlock vital public revenue. For more information,

the final out-the-door price, helping consumers sign with confidence and avoid last-minute surprises.

6. Fairness for Honest Dealers By tracking transparent pricing and ethical sales practices, AI highlights reputable dealerships and routes more qualified buyers their way. This levels the playing field, rewarding dealers who price fairly and penalizing those who rely on deception or high-pressure tactics.

9. Education Before Engagement By the time buyers interact with a dealer, they are better informed. AI gives consumers access to detailed product information, ownership costs and side-byside comparisons, reducing dependence on sales scripts and enabling smarter, faster decisions.

into one where both buyers and sellers win,” notes Shefska, himself on the front lines of the auto retail technology revolution with the CarEdge https:// caredge.com/pro tool saving buyers thousands. “For consumers, that means a simpler, fairer experience. For dealers, it means efficiency, lower overhead and stronger long-term relationships.”

7. Time Savings on Every Step AI automates hours of tedious work— comparing listings, contacting dealers, collecting quotes and analyzing options— so consumers can make informed decisions in minutes instead of days. What once required multiple visits and phone calls now happens seamlessly behind the scenes.

10. A More Human Buying Experience Ironically, the automation that AI brings is making car buying feel more human. By removing confusion, confrontation and wasted time, AI frees buyers to focus on excitement and satisfaction—knowing they are getting a fair deal, clear information and control over the process.

The Road Ahead AI’s influence on retail automotive is only beginning. “From intelligent research tools and negotiation agents to data transparency networks, the technology is already rebuilding an antiquated industry

In short, artificial intelligence isn’t just improving how we buy cars. It’s redefining what fair, informed and frictionless car buying finally looks like. For consumers, the car buying experience is about to get radically easier. For dealers and OEMs, the ones who embrace this new model won’t just survive, they’ll lead. Travel Mistakes From Page 1A

changing. I remember booking a flight to Australia a few years ago when the country didn’t have a visa requirement. But before I left, the requirement changed, and when I arrived at the airport, my airline wouldn’t let me check in. Fortunately, there’s an Australian ETA smartphone app that lets you apply for the necessary permission online, and you can get your approval within minutes. Nohr wasn’t so lucky. She tried to secure a visa, but couldn’t get it in time. Her flight left without her -- an expensive lesson. “Now I always check for visa requirements online,” she says. That’s good, because next year, even the EU will require a little paperwork for visitors. After repeated delays, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) authorization will go into effect. It’s a pre-entry requirement that is scheduled to go into effect at the end of 2026. Other new mistakes travelers will make in 2026 Here’s a short list of the errors travelers will be making next year -- and how to avoid them. Failing to research your destination It’s an easier mistake to make than you might think. Say you’re traveling to a place in Canada or Mexico that you’ve been to many times. It would be easy to

say, “I know this place -- no need to do any research.” But times change, and especially in 2026, you can’t make any assumptions. “Always research the destination thoroughly, including local customs, laws, and cultural norms,” advises Frank Harrison, Regional Security Director for the Americas at World Travel Protection. Letting an AI plan your trip This is a growing problem, according to Joe Cronin, CEO of International Citizens Insurance. He says travelers are using ChatGPT or Gemini to generate itineraries that turn out to be riddled with hallucinations and errors. “These tools don’t always know if a local spot is closed,” he says. “We’ll get calls from people who missed connection because it wasn’t physically possible to pull off in time.” The fix? If you use an AI, make sure you verify the details. Otherwise, you might miss an attraction -- or a flight connection. Not giving yourself enough time As travelers try to cram more activities into less time, their schedules can become too ambitious which can potentially waste time and money. “For example, flying on the same day of the cruise can result in missing the port departure,” says Elad Schaffer, CEO of Faye Travel Insurance. Rather than waiting until the last minute to book activities, such as dinner reservations or spa appointments, his advice is to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time, especially if you’re taking a cruise.

To put Your Business in the Spot Light, call (954) 458-0635 and be Seen Now!

Packing your sense of skepticism A lot of travelers are stumbling into their next destination, oblivious to what awaits them, experts say. And the problem is getting worse. Susan Sherren, Founder of Luxury Travel Agency Couture Trips, says it’s more important than ever to bring critical thinking skills to your next trip. “For example, airlines are using algorithms and AI to pair connecting flights,” she says. “Don’t always accept the suggested pairing without leaving at least two hours for some connecting flights, especially if you are connecting to an international flight.” She says these flights usually board at least an hour before departure. The same thing extends to anything people will tell you when you’re on vacation. Just because you see a five-star rating on a hotel doesn’t mean it’s great. Verify everything. Waiting too long to book your trip One of the worst new mistakes that travelers make is waiting too long to book their vacation. After the COVID-19 Pandemic, there were plenty of lastminute deals available. But those days are over, some experts say. Take your average ski vacation. “People wait until the ski season gets going to plan their trip, and buy their lift tickets at the window on the day they want to ski,” says Sarah Beatty, a spokeswoman for Colorado Ski Country USA, a trade group that represents the Colorado ski industry. “The ski industry is just like any other travel industry: the more you plan ahead, the more flexibility you have

to find a better deal on lift tickets, lodging, and lessons.” So if you’re reading this now and you want to go skiing this winter, you’ll find the best deals in Argentina and Chile in July -during the Southern Hemisphere winter. The biggest mistake: Not traveling at all The experts are right, but there’s one more mistake -- and it may be the biggest mistake of all. It’s letting all the travel worries keep you home. Truth is, you can skip the research, wait until the last minute to plan your trip, hire Mr. ChatGPT as your travel agent, and accept everything at face value -- but taking the trip is still better than not taking it. I know because I’ve been to some places this year that I didn’t care for. I wasn’t a fan of chaotic Bangkok, and there were parts of Australia’s Red Center that missed the mark. Also, I don’t like Tokyo’s always-crowded subways. But I wouldn’t give up any of those experiences. All the chaos and uncertainty of this year might leave you tempted to avoid any travel in 2026, too. Don’t give in to it. After all, a misadventure is still an adventure. ArtServe Announces 2026 Calendar Of Events Celebrating Creativity, Wellness, Language And Community ArtServe, Broward County’s premier incubator for arts and culture, has released its 2026 calendar of events. The coming year brings a thoughtfully curated mix of exhibitions, celebrations and community programs designed to champion creativity and broaden cultural engagement. Through its visual and performing arts initiatives, ArtServe continues to nurture artistic growth, expand educational opportunities and strengthen the region’s creative economy. “Our 2026 season reflects ArtServe’s commitment to bringing people together through art that encourages reflection, dialogue and a true sense of community,” said ArtServe CEO Jason Hughes. “Each exhibition explores a different aspect of the human experience. When taken together, the season offers our community a chance to discover, connect and engage in ways that are both meaningful and inspiring.” This year’s lineup encourages audiences to pause, consider their own stories and connect more deeply with one another. Highlights include: Journey to Mount Athos Friday, January 23rd, 2026 Friday, March 6th, 2026 ArtServe opens its 2026 Season with Journey to Mount Athos, presented in partnership with the Mount Athos Foundation of America. The exhibition features more than 30 large-scale art banners, photographs and cultural artifacts that illuminate the spirituality, artistry and traditions of Greece’s Mount Athos Orthodox monastic community. Additional works by local Greek artists—along with poetry, traditional costumes and musical instruments—celebrate Hellenic culture, history and Fort Lauderdale’s sister-city connection with Thessaloniki. Opening night will feature a Greekthemed celebration with live music, costumed dancers, guest speakers and cultural presentations sponsored by the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) and the Hellenic Society of South Florida. The public reception will take place Friday, January 23rd at 6:00 p.m. I’m Still Here: Exploring Mental Wellness Friday, March 27th, 2026 Friday, May 22nd, 2026 A tribute to resilience and the enduring human spirit, this exhibition centers on mental health and the importance of find-

ing moments of joy even during challenging times. A free public reception will be held on Friday, March 27th, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.

2025: The Year The Government Stopped Pretending It Cared About Freedom By John & Nisha Whitehead

Some years chip away at freedom. Others tear the mask off. 2025 was the year the government stopped pretending it was constrained by the Constitution—when executive power expanded openly and unapologetically, surveillance became ambient, dissent became dangerous, and the machinery of militarized government embedded itself into daily life. Under Trump 2.0, the erosion of civil liberties gave way to something more brazen: the dismantling of constitutional government itself. What made 2025 different was not any single abuse of power, but the relentless accumulation of them. The losses mounted week by week, crisis by crisis, executive order by executive order, until exhaustion itself became a political condition. Outrage no longer led to accountability; it simply rolled into the next emergency. What follows is not a list of grievances or a catalogue of partisan disputes. It is a record of the year freedom lost its guardrails—and of a nation torn apart from within by the very individuals and institutions entrusted with preventing such tyranny. Donald J. Trump entered his second term promising revenge, retribution, and sweeping transformation. In that regard, he has been utterly successful. Where he has failed—spectacularly—is in honoring his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution. From the outset, Trump treated the Constitution not as a governing framework but as an obstacle—something to be maneuvered around, ignored, or rewritten by executive fiat. Indeed, he signed more executive orders in his first month than any other president had signed in their first 100 days. The warning signs appeared immediately. Within days of his inauguration, the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights disappeared from the White House website. While the administration later insisted the documents would be restored, the timing and symbolism were impossible to ignore—especially as executive orders

poured out at a pace designed to bypass the very rule of law those documents exist to preserve. Almost immediately thereafter, Trump declared two national states of emergency, announced his intention to disregard the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship, established new federal agencies without congressional authorization, and pushed for an expansion of the death penalty. Constitutional boundaries were not merely tested; they were treated as optional. At the same time, the presidential pardon—intended as a tool of mercy—was transformed into a currency of loyalty. Political allies and insiders were shielded from accountability, signaling that allegiance to the president now mattered more than fidelity to the law. Economic governance followed the same pattern. Trump unilaterally launched tariff wars against longstanding trade partners, seizing Congress’s power of the purse and throwing already fragile markets into turmoil. Constitutional process was no longer a prerequisite for national policy; presidential will was sufficient. Immigration enforcement soon revealed just how far the rule of law had eroded. Despite campaign promises to target violent offenders, Immigration and Customs Enforcement expanded dragnetstyle raids that swept up undocumented immigrants with no criminal history. In a calculated effort to evade judicial review and human rights obligations, detainees were secretly flown out of the country to foreign prisons beyond the reach of U.S. courts. As public opposition mounted, the government’s response was not restraint but force. The National Guard was deployed first to Washington, D.C., and then increasingly to states across the country, under the pretext of addressing crime and unrest. Civil liberties organizations warned that the line between civilian law enforcement and military occupation was rapidly disappearing. The administration pressed on regardless. By this point, the nation was teetering on the brink of a constitutional crisis. The

president openly embraced the notion that “I have the right to do whatever I want as president.” Abroad, constitutional limits collapsed just as readily. The United States carried out preemptive military strikes against Iranian nuclear sites without congressional authorization. Drone strikes escalated in Yemen. Civilian boats were targeted under the banner of counterterrorism and drug interdiction. Trump openly threatened land invasions of Venezuela. The Founders’ fear of a standing army turned inward—and war powers exercised without consent—was no longer theoretical. It had become standard operating procedure. Domestic tragedy did nothing to slow this consolidation of power. Crisis after crisis was folded into an ever-expanding rationale for centralized control, rather than prompting accountability, restraint, or reflection. By midyear, even the machinery of government itself was being dismantled. Under the banner of “efficiency,” the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began shuttering agencies and hacking away at public services. In practice, the initiative cost taxpayers more than it saved, hollowed out institutional expertise, and left Americans with fewer protections and fewer remedies. The government became less capable of serving the public—and more capable of policing it. At the same time, the surveillance state reached a new level of sophistication and reach. Government agencies consolidated financial records, biometric identifiers, communications metadata, travel histories, and online behavior into centralized intelligence systems, often facilitated by private contractors. Artificial intelligence tools generated risk scores and predictive profiles, flagging individuals not for crimes committed, but for behaviors, associations, and speech deemed suspicious. The presumption of innocence gave way to the logic of pre-crime. Due process eroded accordingly. Habeas corpus—the oldest safeguard of liberty—lost meaning as Americans were detained first and forced to justify

their innocence later. Political speech itself was increasingly treated as a public-safety risk. Incarceration, meanwhile, became national infrastructure. Predictive policing systems fed people into the system at the front end, while bureaucratic cruelty defined life inside it. Justice became mechanical, impersonal, and deliberately unforgiving. Federalism collapsed in parallel. Local police forces were federalized in practice if not in name. National Guard units were commandeered. Federal enforcement authority expanded into states and cities once shielded from centralized power. The balance between local self-governance and federal authority—one of the Constitution’s most important safeguards—was steadily erased. Oversight mechanisms fared no better. Inspectors General were sidelined. Congressional subpoenas were ignored. Whistleblowers were punished rather than protected. Transparency collapsed as Freedom of Information Act requests were delayed, denied, or buried. Routine documents were classified. Internal communications vanished. None of this happened overnight. That is the point. The damage was cumulative, calculated, and exhausting by design. The goal of 2025 was not merely to expand power, but as I make clear in Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, to normalize its abuse, to wear the public down until resistance felt futile. The question for 2026 is not whether this trajectory will continue, but whether the American people will reassert the constitutional limits that make freedom possible—before those limits disappear entirely. ArtServe Presents “Journey To Mount Athos,” Bringing Greek Culture And Art To Fort Lauderdale ArtServe will open “Journey to Mount Athos” on Friday, January 23rd, 2026 a compelling cultural exhibition that brings the artistic and historic traditions of Greece to South Florida. The exhibition runs through Friday, March 6th, 2026 and launches with a free, public opening reception on Friday, January 23rd, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Presented in partnership with the Mount Athos Foundation of America and supported by the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), “Journey to Mount Athos” offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience Greek heritage through large-scale visual art, photography and cultural artifacts. The exhibition is anchored by 34 retractable art banners from the Mount Athos Orthodox Church Center and includes the “Princeton Exhibition” of 46 photographs and four canvas prints, along with original works by local Greek artists. The exhibition features a curated collection of cultural artifacts that reflect the depth and diversity of Hellenic tradition, including framed poetry, musical instru-

ments and objects from South Florida’s Orthodox churches and schools. Among the highlights are two authentic traditional Greek costumes from different regions, generously provided by Anastasia Kastrenakes Merkel. Drawn from her personal collection, the garments offer a tangible link to Greece’s regional identity and craftsmanship. Merkel played a key role in the planning of the exhibition and worked closely with ArtServe to ensure their thoughtful presentation. Together, the exhibition’s elements trace a cultural journey beginning in Fort Lauderdale’s sister city of Thessaloniki and culminating at Mount Athos, one of the most important centers in the Orthodox Christian world. Opening Reception A Night of Greek Celebration The opening night on Friday, January 23rd, 2026 will transform ArtServe’s auditorium into a celebration of Greek life and artistry. Guests will enjoy: • A cultural panel of speakers • Byzantine chanting and Greek music

• Traditional costumed dancers • A short film presentation • Greek wine, beer and refreshments Throughout the exhibition, ArtServe will highlight South Florida’s vibrant Greek community by promoting upcoming festivals and cultural events hosted by local churches and organizations.
