Now in its sixth year, the need is greater than ever to raise funds for South Broward’s only pediatric hospital, which has become the leading children’s hospital in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. In 2014’s fiscal year alone, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital served children and their families in 53,450 outpatient visits, 8,707 admissions and observations and 6,039 pediatric surgeries. Funds from previous years have supported the hospital’s Heart Institute, which provides children with a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to repair of congenital defects and other cardiac dysfunctions. It houses the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program, one of only two of its kind in South Florida. Aventura Hospital’s application for a heliport will affect this community
By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH During our November 7th meeting the City Manager brought to the commission’s attention that Aventura Hospital had applied to the City of Aventura for a conditional use permit to build a heliport. Our city had received noticed before holiday break that the item was to be heard on January 6th. City Manager Miller and our staff met with the Executive Director of the hospital on the 5th to find out more information on the possible impact this proposal would have on our community. After their meeting, there were still no clear answers or assurances that the flight path proposed would not adversely impact our residents and city developments. City Manager Miller asked for a deferral and they would not agree. I, too, tried reaching out to the Mayor and their commission to request a deferral but did not have the chance to speak with them as they were in a “Cone of Silence.” We have certain items where we have a cone but it is lifted before the meeting so we can research and work with all stakeholders. The meeting took place and the Aventura staff suggested a change in the language of their ordinance that was adopted by their commission. The amendment that was proffered still
did not provide strong enough language to address our concerns, nor did it make any corrections to cover costs of any impacts. Our city does not object to the hospital having a trauma center or question the need for the heliport. The issue we have is with the flight path that was selected and designated for the FAA to approve. The flight path is directly over our community, not Aventura. It is designated to be down Hallandale Beach Boulevard cross over Gulfstream NE corner and then down Federal Highway. We were informed that there were two other flight paths but this was the least impactful. Our commission of course did not even have a chance to weigh in. Most individuals would presume that a trauma center this close to our city and other south Broward cities would be a great thing for everyone in the area. The problem is they can only pick up patients in Dade County. We were even told that in all likelihood this path would not even be used, since it is contrary to how the system would operate. We were also told that FAA could not deny development but obviously their opinions would not be ignored. There would be studies required that would add cost and at a minimum time to projects constructed in the city. As you can see there were
plenty of unanswered questions. We directed our city manager and our city attorney to take all necessary actions and steps to research the entire issue. They were then directed to work with the hospital and Aventura towards a resolution. We hope it will be resolved without needing to take any legal action. As the saying goes, “trust but verify.” The city manager will be meeting with them this week and we will know more by our first meeting in February. As your Mayor, along with the commission, every financial decision we make is with prudent care and evaluation. As one of these fiscal stewards I will assure you that we are keenly focused on the bond proceeds for our parks and how the dollars are managed over the next 6 years during construction. Having oversight over the financial controls when it comes to the construction management teams is critical. I had asked how the bond proceeds would be audited and if we needed to hire a separate auditor to perform this duty. I was pleased to hear two answers to my question that assured me and should more importantly assure our taxpayers. There will be an auditor and the cost of this person has been already calculated as part of the overall cost of the bonds. Our other parks have

been completed under budget and on time. This was done through project management team and having the project approved under Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) Model. Once awarded the project costs are locked in. This means that there is a construction team of contractors and then our project manager watching the projects daily. There will be redundancies and many eyes including the commission. The city commission took action during our last budget process to change how we are registering and billing water accounts. The changes were adopted since the city had audited our water account and found $500,000 had to be written off, since the account was not attached to property. We did not have the ability to place liens on the uncollected amounts. The only payment was the forfeited deposits of $200. This combined with our new technology will reduce our write-offs. Many cities only allow the real property owner to open utility accounts. It makes sense and protects your tax dollars. Some landlords when they received a letter about the account change were up in arms since they would now have to pay deposits. They were not aware that I requested a double bill system. This will allow
the landlord and tenant to have an approved private agreement for the tenant to be responsible to pay the deposit and bill or they could simply pay themselves and the tenant would receive a copy of the bill so they would not be over charged. It would require a bit of lifting by landlords but protect taxpayers from footing the bill for someone getting free water. At the time of adoption. it was suggested to have deposits returned after two years. This was removed due to the fact that this money is kept to offset the final bill. There was a concern that the owners could sell their homes and still walk owing the city money. After the election the commission discussed repealing the ordinance all together and asked for an item to do just that. At the last meeting, we debated the issue at length. I could not support a full repeal. We would have re-
gressed backwards and not address the root of the problem. After debate it was agreed the ordinance would be brought back on first reading with only one change. The city agreed changing the item to return deposits after two years of on time payments. This still leaves some exposures, since we will have to lien the property and the new account holder would need to pay the outstanding balance. The ordinance will be brought back with the deposit change for first reading. Is it wrong to keep asking her to talk about her issues and accept my help?....JB A…Kind of yes and kind of no… Who can blame a concerned mother wanting to help when she sees an unhealthy situation going on in her daughters marriage……..But if you insist on asking her about her personal issues, without her blessing it may be viewed as an invasion of privacy, and can create an estrangement from her and may possibly also affect the relationship you have with your grand kids… Here is some advice. Ask first if she wants to discuss her problems with you, and don’t insist on it if she says no.… Say something like I don’t mean to pry but I know that you and your husband are having some problems. Would you care to talk about it with me. If she says no, that’s it. Case closed. If she is open to discussing matters with you play it cool, don’t come on like steam rollers. Do 90% of the listening and only 10% of the talking… Often times becoming a good listener is all that is needed to increase healthy communications. JB. I know this is a painful situation for you. I have been a therapist in many cases in situations like this. Sometimes the ideal solution is hard to come by between a parent and a child when it comes to sensitive issues like these… That’s why there are therapists. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep. Based on the results of some longevity and disease-prevention studies, some experts say that seven hours is the optimum amount. Teens need a bit more – about eight and a half hours. And Toddlers need 12 to 14 hours, preschoolers about 11 to 13 hours, and 6- to 12-year-olds need 10 to 11 hours. Many people give up sleep to make room for work and leisure. Regularly catching only a few hours of sleep can hinder metabolism and hormone production in a way that is similar to the effects of aging and the early stages of diabetes. Chronic sleep loss may speed the onset or increase the severity of age-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and memory loss. Add the root to the boiling water and allow to simmer for 10 minutes then turn off the heat. Strain and drink while still warm—3-4 cups a day is ideal), or take the herb in capsule form (follow dosage directions, but remember, these are for a 150lb adult—calculate the appropriate dose using your own weight). 2. Flax ( Linum usitatissimum): Flaxseed is one of the best vegan sources of Omega-3 (ALA), which is so important to a strong immune system and for fighting inflammation (the vegan bit is important because animal fats often lead to inflammation in arthritis sufferers). Try to include two tablespoons of flaxseeds or flaxseed oil in your daily diet. Note: do not heat or cook seeds or oil. Also, if you suffer from a digestive condition such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), use the oil rather than the seeds—they could irritate your condition. 3. Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Turmeric is an extremely effective anti-inflammatory herb, and thus an effective pain reliever. It contains at least two chemicals (curcumin and curcuminoids), which decrease inflammation (and are very much like the oft-prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs). Incidentally, this anti-inflammatory effect is also why turmeric is often recommended for treatment of cancer, cataracts and Alzheimer’s. While you can totally add this spice to your daily diet, you will need to take turmeric in supplement form in order to experience the full medicinal benefits. When cooking, try adding black pepper or dried ginger to help activate turmeric. The herb can also be applied topically to relieve pain. 4. Nettles (Urtica dioica): Nettles is an herb with mad-skills incredible for pretty much anything. Nettles are insanely good for you, containing protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, beta-carotene, along with vitamins A, C, D, and B complex, all in a form that is easy for the body to use. Stinging nettle is a wicked herb for those with all types of arthritis and gout. Its anti-inflammatory amazing-ness combined with its minerals (boron, calcium, magnesium and silicon) ease pain while helping to build strong bones. Nettle leaf tea (a cup or more daily) relieves and prevents water retention and inflammation and nourishes the kidneys and adrenals. 5. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Licorice acts much like your body's own natural corticosteroids (which reduce inflammation). Licorice decreases free radicals at the site of inflammation and inhibits the enzyme production that's involved in the inflammatory process. Glycyrrhizin is the component in licorice, which blocks and relieves inflammation. It also supports the body's release of cortisol (which suppresses the immune system, easing the pain and occurrence of arthritis), but it also inhibits some of the side effects of cortisol (such as adrenal fatigue and anxiety). Use in supplement form or as a tea.

Drainage improvements have started in the city Utilizing a $169,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), the City of Hallandale Beach is improving drainage between NW 8th Avenue and NW 6th Avenue. The grant was awarded to the City by the Broward County Commission. Construction crews from FHP/SNN Tectonics began the work last Tuesday. Among the improvements are rebuilding sidewalks and swales, and the placement of catch basins and French drains on NW 8th Avenue, NW 2nd Street and NW 6th Avenue. French drains are pipes with holes to allow the drainage water to percolate into the ground. The work will improve

The Arsht Center presents the stage adaption of the musical ‘Newsies’ - a Disney production SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE By Eleanor Hannan Newsies, the Musical, originally a film, still contains songs from the movie, as well as several new ones. The film characters are replaced by several characters, one of which is named Katherine Plummer, a reporter. During the 2015 season, the tour will play 25 cities during a 43 week period. Based on the real life story of the Newsboy Strike of 1899, this Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist living away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises all newspaper prices, at the newsboys' expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action. With help from a beautiful female reporter, Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of the little man. After many trials and problem tribulations, Jack and Katherine join the newsies in printing their own paper, which tells the outcome of the strike. Jack makes a deal with Pulitzer. The strike ends, and all ends well. It is a fast-paced new musical with awesome choreography and catchy tunes written by eight-time Oscar Winner Alan Menken, who also wrote the title song for "Beauty and The Beast," and "The Little Mermaid." This a great family musical, the entire family will enjoy including an added love story between Jack Kelly and the new character Katherine Plumber. Art is happening in Downtown Hollywood By Kris Rebar HOLLYWOOD - Art is thriving in Downtown Hollywood, giving the area’s “Old Florida” charm renewed energy. The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is just one of the many projects that are creating a cultural momentum in the City. The mural program kicked off in August 2012 with the goal of enhancing key locations in Downtown Hollywood with contemporary outdoor murals. The now 14 completed murals have created points of interest, stimulated activity and enriched the cultural fabric of the community. The program has been attracting media attention and was named “Best Public Art 2013” by New Times Broward. The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is touching individuals and businesses alike. Many walls have been painted live during the Downtown ArtWalks held on the 3rd Saturday of each month. The live paintings have given audiences who may not have appreciated street art and murals a new perception of the genre. They’ve also been able to meet the artists, share ideas and opinions, and engage in larger dialogue. Jill Weisberg is the Project Manager coordinating the project. “We’re thrilled with success of the Downtown Mural Project,” says Weisberg. “It has progressed beyond our expectations and has greatly enhanced the diversity and vibrancy of Downtown Hollywood.” One of the newest murals, Girl Noticed, is located at 20332041 Harrison Street. Artist Lori Pratico created this mural during this month’s Downtown ArtWalk. It was the first mural for the nationwide mural project that is aimed at bringing attention and awareness to the important role females play in society. Pratico and photographer Elizabeth Sanjuan, co-owner of Gallery 2014, will be traveling to 50 states over the next 3 years to erect a series of detailed charcoal portraits, created as large exterior murals. Another recent addition to the collection is a photo realistic mural of a beautiful woman located at 1918 Harrison Street. The artist, Rone, is a key artist in the Melbourne, Australia art scene whose images are featured around the world. CHILI CHEESE DIP 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean) 1 cup chopped onion 1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes in sauce 1 cup frozen corn 3/4 cup water 1 can (2-1/4 ounces) sliced ripe olives, drained 3 teaspoons chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon chipotle hot pepper sauce 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1 package (16 ounces) reduced-fat process cheese (Velveeta), cubed Corn chips In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Transfer to a 5-qt. slow cooker. Stir in the beans, tomatoes, corn, water, olives, chili powder, oregano, pepper sauce, garlic powder

JALAPENO POPPERS WITH LIME CILANTRO DIP 12 jalapeno peppers 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 1-1/4 cups (6 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese 4 green onions, finely chopped 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 6 egg whites, lightly beaten 1-1/2 cups panko (Japanese) bread crumbs 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper LIME CILANTRO DIP: 2 cups (16 ounces) Daisy Brand Sour Cream 4 green onions, finely chopped 1/4 cup lime juice 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt Cut jalapenos in half lengthwise and remove
seeds. Place jalapenos on an ungreased baking sheet. Broil 4-in. from the heat for 4-6 minutes on each side or until lightly blistered. Cool slightly. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and cheddar cheese until blended. Stir in onions. Spoon into pepper halves. Place the flour, egg whites and bread crumbs in separate shallow bowls. Coat jalapenos with flour, then dip in egg whites and coat with crumbs. Place on a greased baking sheet; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake at 350° for 18-20 minutes or until lightly browned. For dip, in a small bowl, combine all ingredients. Serve with poppers. Yield: 2 dozen (2 cups dip).

Grand Opening of Greater Jewish Enrichment Center In Hallandale Beach A new Jewish Enrichment Center/ Adult day care is opening on Hallandale Beach Blvd. We would like for the community to know about this new innovative facility. As the name cites, the center is dedicated to the seniors of the Jewish Community. The mission of the Jewish Enrichment Center is to provide a warm and nurturing beautiful facility catered for Jewish Seniors where they may come for the day to socialize and at the same time receive health care support.
