This week there was a national recognition and Memorial marking a year of our war against the pandemic. The coronavirus was found in China in December, but by January 2020 over 9976 cases had been reported from 21 countries, including the US. The first case was reported in Washington state, when a 35-year-old man presented with symptoms. He was in the hospital for weeks until he started to show improvements. We now know so much more about the history of this virus. Sadly, since day one our country’s leadership and yes, past President Trump’s mismanagement, lack of transparency and hiding of the truth has made our country notoriously known as the country with the worse rate of death per capita in the world. As of January 26th, in the US there have been 422,467 deaths with 25,390,086 confirmed cases. We are now hearing how politicians made decisions, not based on science or recommendations, but from specialists
based on their own political misguided and reckless reasoning. It is a new day in our country, but we certainly have a long road to get out of this mess. Some people still believe all this nonsense about the basic rules established to help prevent the spread. We need to continue to do what the science tells us, wear a mask, social distance, wash our hands regularly and avoid large groups. As a city (Hallandale Beach) we have been focused on addressing many needs, including making sure our city runs safely. We are still partially open, but our staff has continued to work remotely. Our building department and finance department have been open now Monday thru Thursday for walk in service. During this time, our CRA has also remained open online and working hard. Our staff implemented our Covid-19 Relief Program. They also have been busy implementing our many grant and funding programs for our businesses and residents that live within our CRA. The Community Redevelopment Agency Executive Director, Dr. Jeremy Earle will be issuing an update this week and there are some exciting projects taking place. Over the past years the CRA has been focus on revitalizing the
Dixie Corridor. Many of our new residents may be unaware, but this corridor used to be filed with shops and restaurants before the opening of the Aventura Mall and the online shopping experience ensued. We have gone thru many reiterations of plans and overly districts, but nothing seems to stick. I had a chance to participate in a Mayors Design program and came back with a concept to recreate the street. We added on street parking and allowed owners leeway when it comes to uses. After meeting with many of the property and business owners we came up with the FADD Fashion and Art Design District. We are finally seeing it come together. About 5 years ago we heard one of our business was going to move as they have grown out of their location hear in Hallandale Beach. At that time, former City Manager and Director of the CRA Daniel Rosemond worked with “ICE Box” and we partnered with the CRA land to entice them stay in the city. They built a great Restaurant and Commissary on
3rd Street. Part of that plan was to increase parking on 3rd. I was not a fan of giving up land for a parking lot because we already have one on 1st Avenue that is shared and leased. The Board of Directors approved the building of the lot and now it will be built. They are currently in the permitting process. I did convince the board that we need to focus on fixing up the lot on 1st and that is also taking place. With the addition of parking and the CRA façade Program and Restaurant Grant Program we are starting to see the area come to life. Over the next few months, we will see a new business at the old Algy Uniforms & Costumes site and other restaurants and shops are coming soon after. Each Ambassador will organize a major event for Lights On Afterschool, the Afterschool Alliance’s annual rally for Afterschool, which will include events on or around Thursday, October 28th, 2021. The America After 3PM household survey of more than 30,000 families, commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and released this month, finds that unmet demand for Afterschool programs has reached an all-time high. For every child in an Afterschool program in America today, three more are waiting to get in. The study finds significant inequities, with Black and Latin children disproportionately without Afterschool opportunities. Ninety-four percent of parents of Afterschool students say they are satisfied with their child’s program. A large and powerful body of evidence demonstrates improvements in grades, school attendance, behavior and more among children who participate in Afterschool programs. Researchers have also found that students in Afterschool programs are more engaged in school and excited about learning and develop critical work and life skills such as problem solving, teamwork and communications.
