Stress management itself is another resolution that often falls short because it is misunderstood.

How Focusing On Emotional Resilience Fosters New Year’s Resolutions Success By Merilee Kern, MBA

Every January, the calendar resets and optimism surges. People resolve to strengthen relationships, manage stress more effectively, improve their health, and become calmer, more resilient versions of themselves. Yet despite sincere effort, many of these resolutions quietly unravel within weeks. According to emotional leadership expert Owen Marcus, the reason has little to do with motivation or dis-

cipline and everything to do with biology. “Most resolutions fail not because people lack motivation, discipline, or intelligence, but because they are unknowingly working against their own physiology,” says Marcus, Founder and CEO of MELD and Author of “Grow Up: A Man’s Guide to Emotional Maturity.” “When stress accumulates and the nervous system remains in a constant state of alert, even the

Greed Runs In The Family: Island City Stage Presents The Little Foxes By Lillian Hellman [L-R] Mia Matthews, Christopher Dreeson, Margery Lowe, Christian Cooper, and Mallory Flory, JohnBarry Green, Cary Brianna Hart, Steve Trovillion, Jeff Burleson, and Randy Coleman “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” Song of Solomon (2:15) The Bible. Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes, a searing Broadway and silver screen classic, storms into Island City Stage with all its ruthless ambition, razor-sharp dialogue, and Southern gothic splendor

started Thursday, January 8th, 2026 – Sunday, February 1st, 2026. Tickets are on sale now. “The Little Foxes has always been high on my bucket list. And I especially wanted to do it now because of how relevant it is to what’s going on in our country,” said Michael Leeds, Director of the play at Island City Stage. “The play is about a dysfunctional family and the lengths they’ll go to achieve wealth and power. It’s dramatic and funny and has a terrific climactic surprise. Our award-winning cast is top tier, and our production team has really outdone themselves. I

know our audiences will love it as much as I do.” Set in the Deep South at the turn of the 20th century, this gripping drama follows the wealthy but morally bankrupt Hubbard family, bound by blood but torn apart by greed. At the center is Regina, a calculating and charismatic woman determined to get her share of the American Dream—no matter the cost. Together with her cruel brothers Oscar and Benjamin, the Hubbards will stop at nothing to secure a fortune. But when Regina’s ailing husband refuses to fund their scheme, the claws

come out and the lies begin to spiral. With money on the line and family loyalty up for sale, the Hubbards prove one chilling truth: some people eat the earth—and some just stand by and watch. The original Broadway production of The Little Foxes opened in 1939 at the National Theatre and ran for 410 performances. It originally starred Tallulah Bankhead as Regina Hubbard Giddens who went on to win awards and reprise her role in the 1941 radio adaptation. It was Bette Davis, however, who starred in the film adaptation

alongside the other Broadway stars making their film debuts. Over the years and many incarnations of the play, the coveted role of the malevolently, ruthlessly scheming Regina Giddens has been played by notable actresses including Greer Garson, Anne Bancroft, Geraldine Page, Stockard Channing, Marg Helgenberger, Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon. Notoriety and fame burned brightly but he died of Cancer by the age of 35. Kaufman’s daringly over-the-top routines and impersonations: Mighty Mouse, Elvis, abrasive lounge singer Tony Clifton and the “foreign man” of sitcom Taxi made him the most unconventional of comedy stars, and one with a pronounced dark side. As chronicled through family stories, home movies, the revealing memories of personalities including David Letterman and Carol Kane, and scores of outrageously funny performance clips, Kaufman’s persona comes to life in all its in-your-face provocation. Resolutions From Page 1A are not failing their resolutions. Their bodies are prioritizing survival overgrowth.” This physiological reality reframes why so many well-intentioned goals fall apart. Without addressing nervous system regulation and emotional load, even the most carefully crafted resolutions become unsustainable. Emotional resilience, Marcus argues, is the missing foundation. “Emotional resilience is the capacity to stay regulated under stress, recover from challenges, and remain connected to yourself and others while facing difficulty,” he says. “It is not a personality trait or a mindset that some people are born with. It is a biological capacity shaped by nervous system health, social connection, and how stress is processed and resolved in the body.” Rather than forcing outcomes through willpower, Marcus advocates reframing resolutions as resilience building practices. “In practical terms, emotional resilience determines whether stress strengthens us or slowly depletes us,” he explains. “When people reframe resolutions around building resilience rather than forcing outcomes, they remove the invisible barriers that lead to procrastination, self-sabotage, and eventual abandonment.” This shift becomes especially important when people set goals around relationships, one of the most common New Year aspirations. While relationships are often viewed as emotional or lifestyle choices, Marcus emphasizes that they are a biological necessity. “Relationships are actually a physiological resource,” he says. “Decades of social genomic research show that our social environment directly shapes gene expression.” Chronic loneliness, he explains, activates a pro-inflammatory genetic profile linked to depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and accelerated aging. “What this means is that connection is not optional for health. It is foundational,” Marcus says. To support resilience, Marcus recommends consistent, meaningful social engagement rather than surface level

interaction. “Practically speaking, people benefit from two to three points of meaningful social contact each week,” he explains. “These are not casual check-ins or transactional conversations. They involve shared experience, emotional presence, and authenticity for at least ten

wear and tear on the body caused by chronic stress. “Releasing accumulated stress reduces allostatic load and training the nervous system improves mental acuity because when we are not in a stress state, our brain is free to create, think, and connect,” he explains.

brain, contributing to cognitive decline. Unprocessed emotions further compound the issue. “They do not disappear,” Marcus says. “They are stored in the body, particularly in the fascia.” This physical tension mirrors emotional rigidity, reducing flexibility in both thought and behavior. Releasing chronic tension through body - based awareness and movement can restore adaptability on multiple levels. Ultimately, Marcus argues that successful resolutions are less about self-improvement and more about selfregulation. Emotional resilience is not reserved for a select few. It is a biological skill that can be trained. “When resolutions are built on this foundation, progress becomes sustainable rather than exhausting,” he says. Relationships deepen, stress becomes manageable, and health is supported from the inside out. By focusing on emotional resilience, people do not just keep their resolutions. They create a framework for long term vitality, clarity, and connection that lasts far beyond the start of the year. “When people reframe resolutions around building resilience rather than forcing outcomes, they remove the invisible barriers that lead to procrastination, self-sabotage, and eventual abandonment.” Owen Marcus minutes.” When connection is approached this way, it becomes a powerful regulator of stress. “This type of connection downregulates the stress response and supports brain health,” Marcus says. “When relationships are treated as a biological necessity rather than a luxury, people begin to see dramatic shifts not only in emotional well-being but also in resilience, clarity, and energy.” Stress management itself is another resolution that often falls short because it is misunderstood. “Traditional stress management focuses heavily on individual coping strategies, but stress physiology is relational,” Marcus explains. One of the most powerful mechanisms for regulating stress is co regulation, the process by which one person’s nervous system helps stabilize another’s. “This is not psychological theory. It is hardwired biology,” he says. “The vagus nerve, the largest nerve in the body, is designed to downregulate stress when we experience safe, authentic connection with another person.” While mindfulness apps and solo techniques can be helpful, Marcus notes they cannot fully replace relational regulation. Over time, unresolved stress accumulates and contributes to allostatic load, the

Simply staying busy or joining more activities, however, does not guarantee regulation. “Participation alone does not regulate the nervous system. Authentic connection does,” Marcus says. Groups that prioritize genuine interaction foster neurogenesis, strengthen the prefrontal cortex, and lower stress load. “When people feel safe, they become more engaged, creative, and resilient.” Marcus emphasizes that stress itself is not the enemy. “Most chronic stress does not come from events themselves. It comes from facing those events without support,” he explains. Balanced stress, when resolved, builds capacity. Stress without resolution does the opposite. This distinction becomes critical when considering long term health. “One of the most important preventive health strategies is lowering allostatic load,” Marcus says. “Allostatic load predicts aging outcomes more reliably than chronological age.” Chronic stress contributes to inflammation, which Marcus identifies as a major driver of disease. “Stress creates inflammation in the body. Acute inflammation is healthy and adaptive, but chronic inflammation is destructive,” he explains. Over time, this inflammation affects not only the body but also the

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s “Ravel On The Riviera” Annual Gala To Celebrate Community Arts Leaders South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) invites patrons to sail away to “Ravel on the Riviera,” this year’s annual gala fundraiser that captures the romance of the South of France in the golden age — where the glamour of Josephine Baker and the soulful voice of Edith Piaf filled seaside cabarets, and champagne flowed under starlit skies. The enchanting evening, which pays homage to both the celebrated French composer, pianist and conductor and the sun-drenched Mediterranean coastline renowned for its artistic heritage, will take place on Saturday, January 17th, 2026 at 5:30 p.m., at Coral Ridge Yacht Club located at 2800 Yacht Club Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304. The event, which celebrates South Florida community arts leaders and advocates who support SFSO’s impactful artistic, community engagement and music education initiatives, will feature a private performance by international pianist Svetlana Smolina. “This year’s SFSO gala will be our grandest yet, filled with timeless elegance, European ambience and a celebration of classical music champions,” said Jacqueline Lorber, President and CEO of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. “In today’s world, performances aren’t enough to provide a solid foundation for budding musicians. It is through fundraising initiatives like this gala, our involvement with Junior Achievement and our new creative 100-Violin initiative that afford us the resources to stimulate creative growth and academic success plus foster a lifelong connection to the arts for underserved students in local schools.” This formal gala evening will recognize Sound of Success regional arts advocates Jeannette and Francisco Alvarado of Marand Builders, Miriam Richter, William Sandrik & Henry Smith, Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant Foundation and the Warten Foundation for their instrumental support of SFSO’s impactful community outreach and musical programming initiatives. Guests will be welcomed with champagne and signature cocktails, setting the tone for a night of Riviera elegance. A three-course French dinner follows, accompanied by evocative melodies that bring to life the timeless charm of the Cote d’Azur. The highlight of the evening will be a private performance by acclaimed pianist Svetlana Smolina, whose artistry captures the brilliance of Ravel and the spirit of the French Riviera. As the night unfolds, the celebration continues with a dessert reception, sparkling aperitifs, and dancing on theme — a true voyage to another era, blending vintage Parisian allure with nautical Mediterranean sophistication. SFSO’s “Ravel on the Riviera” Gala is chaired by Kate and Brent Nelson. This year’s sponsors include Mark Kravitz and Aviah Flagler Village (Special Recognition), Chuck Nicholls and Mark Turner (Décor Sponsors) and Ombelle Fort Lauderdale (Valet Sponsor). SFSO’s 28th Season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. From Mozart’s vivacious “Haffner” symphony to the sun-drenched skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” and the sweeping emotion of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto — performances burst with color and power. Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvorak’s Bohemian Eighth deepen the journey, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol whirls with Spanish flair. SFSO is also proud to present upcoming orchestra firsts by GRAMMYnominated composers, including the Florida premiere of Had to Be by Haitian American Nathalie Joachim, featuring breakout cellist Seth Parker Woods, and Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances. From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores including Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before

Morikami From Page 1A Akihiro Mashimo, whose iconic illuminated bamboo installations create a unique and immersive atmosphere. The exhibition allows attendees to experience a piece of Japan’s vibrant festival culture and brings awareness to the importance of environmental conservation around the world. Take Akari is funded in part by The Jacarlene Foundation, JM Family Enterprises Inc., and Nobu Hotel Miami Beach. Cost is free with paid museum admission. Morikami Museum History Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens celebrate a rich, century-old connection between Japan and South Florida. In the early 1900s, a group of young Japanese farmers, led by Jo Sakai, established the Yamato Colony in northern Boca Raton. Named after an ancient term for Japan, this small agricultural community aimed to introduce innovative farming practices to Florida. The settlers primarily grew pineapples and winter vegetables, but faced challenges like competition and economic changes that made farming difficult. Despite hardships, the colony grew to include families, blending Japanese traditions with life in Florida. However, by the 1940s, most colonists had left or returned to Japan. During World War II, the U.S. Government took over much of the land for military use. George Sukeji Morikami, one of the last remaining settlers, stayed and later donated his land to Palm Beach County. This gift led to the creation of Morikami Park, which opened in 1977 as a cultural and educational center honoring the Yamato Colony’s legacy. Working alongside his friends, neighbors, and the Palm Beach County Department of Parks and Recreation, George Morikami helped transform his personal history into a lasting legacy— building a bridge of cultural understanding between George’s two homelands. Today, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens features traditional Japanese architecture, three exhibition galleries, a theater, and an authentic tea house. The 16-acre Japanese gardens reflect a variety of historical styles from across Japan, thoughtfully arranged to form one harmonious landscape. With close to 7,500 art objects and artifacts, including tea ceremony items and textiles, the Morikami offers visitors a deep, immersive experience of Japanese culture and its enduring connection to Florida.

Take Akari: Bamboo Lights offers a unique opportunity for visitors to witness the artistry and master craftsmanship of Akihiro Mashimo

The exhibition allows attendees to experience a piece of Japan’s vibrant festival culture and brings awareness to the importance of environmental conservation around the world. The original building, the Yamato-kan, is modeled after a Japanese villa. It features a ring of exhibition rooms surrounding an open-air courtyard with a dry garden of gravel, pebbles, and small boulders. The Yamato-kan offers exhibits that chronicle the history of the Yamato Colony and the design philosophy of garden designer Hoichi Kurisu. The principal museum building opened in 1993 to meet popular demand for more programming and versatile facilities and to satisfy the needs of a growing community. The museum’s architecture is inspired by traditional Japanese design. The building features three exhibition galleries, a 226seat theater, an authentic tea house with a viewing gallery, classrooms, a museum store, the Cornell Cafe, and lakeside terraces for a panoramic view while dining.

The Morikami Collections house more than 7,000 Japanese art objects and artifacts, including a 500-piece collection of tea ceremony items, more than 200 textile pieces, and fine art acquisitions. The 16 acres that surround Morikami’s two museum buildings include expansive Japanese gardens with strolling paths, resting areas, our world-class bonsai collection and lakes teeming with koi and other wildlife. The wider 200-acre park features nature trails, pine forests and picnic areas. In 2001, Morikami completed a major garden expansion and renovation. The new gardens reflect major periods of Japanese garden design, from the eighth to the 20th century, and serve as an outdoor extension of the museum. According to the garden designer, Hoichi Kurisu,

each garden is intended to express the character and ideas of a unique counterpart in Japan without attempting to duplicate those gardens, and seamlessly flow together as one garden. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, with its unique gardens and collections, is one of Palm Beach County’s most treasured cultural attractions. Located in a tranquil natural setting, Morikami invites visitors to explore its many facets and discover Florida’s heritage and its connection with Japan. The Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach, Florida 33446. For more information, call: (561) 495-0233. For over 45 years, Fogo de Chao has celebrated the rich heritage of Brazilian churrasco.

An Incomparable Dining Experience Exuding The Warmth Of Brazilian Hospitality By Merilee Kern, MBA

Ensconced in the vibrant Las Olas Boulevard section of Fort Lauderdale, Fogo de Chao offers an incomparable dining experience exuding the warmth of Brazilian hospitality. With locations around the globe, this particular South Florida location uniquely captures the essence of the brand while infusing it with local flair. The restaurant’s signature commitment to value, variety, and customization shines through in every detail, making it a standout among Fort Lauderdale’s dining options. At the heart of Fogo de Chao is its dedication to balancing tradition with innovation. For over 45 years, the restaurant has celebrated the rich heritage of Brazilian churrasco, while continuously evolving its menu to meet modern tastes and dietary preferences. This is evident in offerings like its Signature Churrasco Experience, where a rotating selection of high-quality meats, carved tableside by gaucho chefs, ensures a dynamic and satisfying culinary journey free from the anxiety of choosing just one dish. Guests are also invited to indulge in dishes like the Whole Branzino, a delicately grilled fish that highlights the versatility of the churrasco cooking style, and the indulgent Caviar Brioche, which bridges the gap between luxury and approachability. The restaurant’s famed “Market Table” complements the dining experience with its vibrant array of seasonal salads, exotic vegetables, and nutrient-rich dishes, catering to diverse dietary needs including vegetarian, glutenfree, and keto options. For a deeper dive into this restaurant’s formula for success, below is a conversation with Neimar Hensel, Area Manager at Fogo de Chao, who highlights why this Fort Lauderdale hotspot offers an exceptional epicurean adventure. MK: First, what makes the Fort Lauderdale location of Fogo de Chao unique compared to other locations throughout the U.S.? NH: The Fort Lauderdale location stands out with its expansive outdoor patio, offering a unique dining experience in the open air, with views of the waterfront. The venue combines the laid-back South Florida vibe with vibrant Brazilian culture. Our Fort Lauderdale location also features a butcher shop storefront where our gauchos, professionally trained chefs, expertly prepare premium cuts, and can offer you popular cuts like Ribeyes, NY Strip Steaks, and Filet Mignon, as well as more authentic Brazilian cuts including Picanha and Fraldinha to take home. At Fogo, we focus on the three most important aspects of dining out for our guests, which are value, variety and customization. We offer customizable menu offerings so everyone can find their culinary favorites at every daypart, including weekend brunch, All-Day Happy Hour at Bar Fogo, Lunch, Dinner, and fresh, seasonal soup and salads at the Market Table which is suited for all dietary lifestyles including pescatarian, keto, paleo, glutenfree and more. These aspects truly set us apart from other steakhouses. MK: What sets the restaurant apart from other comparable restaurant options in Fort Lauderdale? NH: Dining out often comes with “menu anxiety” or “plate envy,” where people regret their order after seeing what someone else gets. At Fogo, this stress disappears with our Signature Churrasco Experience. Guests have endless opportunities to discover new culinary options

and savor their favorites including a rotating mix of high-quality proteins cut and served tableside, signature sides, and customizable dishes, which means that they don’t have to pick just one. At Fogo, we offer customizable menu offerings for every daypart, including weekend brunch, All-Day Happy Hour at Bar Fogo, Lunch, Dinner, and fresh, seasonal soup and salads at the Market Table which is suited for all dietary lifestyles including pescatarian, keto, paleo, glutenfree and more. These aspects truly set us apart from other steakhouses. Our Dry-Aged meat locker of premium cuts offers our guests a unique, elevated and distinct culinary experience. Dry-aged premium cuts are renowned for their intensified meat flavors and enhanced tenderness. The dry-aging process of 22-42 days enhances the natural flavors of the meat while breaking down the muscle fibers, resulting in a richer, nutty, and bolder beef taste and a tender texture. Fogo’s Dry-Aged Premium Cuts are designed to share and enhance your dining occasion from birthdays to anniversaries to group meetings, feeding 2-6 guests.

then carved tableside by our Gaucho chefs. Each cut is a favorite in Brazil and loved by our guests in Fort Lauderdale and nationwide.

MK: Brazilian hospitality is a cornerstone of Fogo de Chao’s philosophy. How is this reflected in the service provided at the Fort Lauderdale location?

NH: The Market Table plays a key role in complementing the churrasco experience by offering a variety of seasonal salads and soups, exotic vegetables, imported cheeses, smoked salmon, cured meats, and more. It features a wide selection of nutrient-dense, whole foods, including plant-based options, allowing guests to customize their meals based on their preferences. We continue to offer fresh ingredients and create limited time offerings such as the recently added Roasted Apple & Butternut Squash Salad, Seasonal Hummus, and Carrot Ginger Soup. This adds balance and variety to the rich, savory flavors of the churrasco experience, enhancing the overall discovery dining experience with vibrant, flavorful choices. Guests are welcome to visit the Market Table as many times as they’d like during their meal.

NH: From the moment guests arrive, they are greeted with warmth and a sense of care that makes them feel right at home. The gaucho chefs, who bring the churrasco meats directly to the table, create an interactive and engaging experience, ensuring each guest receives the perfect meal tailored to their preferences. At Fogo, we pride ourselves on bringing Brazilian hospitality to the heart of every city.

MK: Fogo de Chao has a rich history rooted in Brazilian churrasco. How does the restaurant balance tradition with innovation in its dining experience? NH: For the past 45 years, Fogo has provided wholesome, nutritional menu options for every dietary tribe. By staying consistent with our Brazilian roots, we are continuously evolving to provide offerings that align with guests’ expectations, from quality to flavor. A perfect example of this is the introduction of blistered fresh fish to our menu with the Whole Branzino. The Whole Branzino can be added to any experience and is deboned and then grilled on the churrasco grill over an open flame which blisters the skin, giving the fish a crisp and decadent flavor. Many guests don’t realize that traditional churrasco is not exclusive to steak, but also includes fresh fish. A more viral example is our Caviar Brioche. Caviar is all over Social Media, with many guests sharing they are excited to try this indulgent offering for the first time. Our Caviar Brioche allows guests to try decadent items in the form of small bites, allowing us to provide guests an attainable and approachable value for indulgent offerings. MK: What are some of the most popular cuts of meat served at this location, and do you offer any exclusive menu items specific to Fort Lauderdale? NH: The most popular cut of meat is Fogo’s signature specialty Picanha (top sirloin) and Fraldinha (bottom sirloin). Both of which are lightly seasoned in-house with salt and cooked over an open flame,

MK: Beyond the churrasco-style meats, what other menu highlights or dishes should guests not miss? NH: I recommend guests try the new Whole Branzino. The 2lbs. fresh, mild white fish is blistered churrasco-style and served tableside with extra virgin olive oil, lemon, and parsley, offering a delicious enhancement to the Full Churrasco Experience. I also recommend guests try our dryaged premium cuts that are dry-aged for a minimum of 42 days and are renowned for their intensified meat flavors and enhanced tenderness. The dry-aged Tomahawk Ribeye is the perfect enhancement to any meal to discover the tender, juicy, and robust flavors. MK: Can you expand a bit on your Market Table and its role in complementing the churrasco experience?

MK: How does the restaurant cater to diners with dietary preferences or restrictions, such as vegetarians or gluten-free guests? NH: Unlike traditional steakhouses, Fogo offers a variety of dining options for every dietary tribe including keto, glutenfree, vegan, and more. We offer guests specialty dishes including Seared Tofu and Sesame Black Bean Pasta, Seafood Tower complete with Lobster Tails and snow crab legs, Cauliflower Steak, Fogo’s naturally gluten-free Market Table and more. MK: For first-time visitors, what tips or advice would you offer to ensure they get the most out of their dining experience? NH: For first-time guests, I always recommend they start their experience at the Market Table with seasonal salads and soups, exotic vegetables, imported cheeses, smoked salmon, cured meats, and more. Take your time to savor the flavors from the churrasco experience, and consider adding enhancements like the Whole Branzino or Wagyu Porterhouse, especially when dining with a large group as they’re perfect for sharing with the table to spark new discoveries of culinary favorites. And, no experience is complete without a Caipirinha cocktail, made with cachaca, lime, and sugar, which offers a refreshing and authentic Brazilian flavor. MK: What is your personal favorite item on the menu?

NH: My personal favorite is the Fraldinha, which has a rich flavor and a salty bark due to our churrasco cooking style. I also enjoy the Picanha, the lamb chops, and the Porterhouse. MK: What is your personal favorite aspect of the dining experience at large? NH: My favorite aspect of the dining experience at Fogo is our variety of offerings. I consider myself to be a flexitarian, eating meat, fish, and vegan meals. The variety at Fogo allows me to accommodate my changing dietary preferences on a daily basis. I, along with our guests, are never limited to one option or one dietary tribe. MK: As Fort Lauderdale continues to grow as a culinary destination, how does Fogo de Chao aim to stay ahead of dining trends while maintaining its authenticity? NH: At Fogo, we offer customizable menu offerings for every daypart, including weekend brunch, All-Day Happy Hour at Bar Fogo, Lunch, Dinner, and fresh, seasonal soup and salads at the Market Table which is suited for all dietary lifestyles including pescatarian, keto, paleo, gluten-free and more. These aspects truly set us apart from other steakhouses. We hold quarterly wine dinners and monthly bar events that allow guests to indulge in a tailored menu with signature offerings including wagyu, with curated wine pairings to sample some of Fogo’s best offerings, encouraging guests to come back and indulge in their culinary favorites they discovered. From the interactive service of the gaucho chefs to the thoughtfully curated menu offerings, every visit to Fogo de Chao on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale is designed to create a memorable epicurean experience. As Broward County continues to thrive as a culinary destination, Fogo de Chão remains a beacon of authenticity, offering a dining experience that seamlessly marries the best of tradition and modernity. 10 Totally Doable Ways Sellers Can Raise Resale Value By Merilee Kern, MBA

As the market slowly cools off, homeowners are more interested than ever in finding ways to make sure their properties resell for as much as possible. However, choosing between the many potential renovations makes moving forward with your home improvement and listing for sale overwhelming. What type of renovations can increase home resale value… or generally add tremendous appeal that can tip the scales in your favor? Below Jon Grishpul, CoCEO of www.GreatBuildz.com—a free service that matches homeowners with reliable, pre-screened general contractors—suggests these 10 ways to renovate in intelligent, efficient ways that will help you get more money back as you put your home on the market. #1: Outdoor Upgrades: Curb appeal cannot be understated, and buyers like to have a group area to come home to. This includes the front yard, back yard, any patio space, and even the driveway. If any of these structures need serious renovation or repair, consider prioritizing this area to increase home value. Driveways, in particular, can add a lot of value. This is particularly true if you have an unpaved driveway or can expand the driveway to be wider. These will not only add value, but they will also attract attention. Another addition that can make a huge difference is an outdoor living area, such as a deck or patio. Homeowners have found that they get nearly 100% back on this investment, so it can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and then increase your resale value down the line. When doing large landscaping and paving projects, however, keep in mind that you should not DIY these renovations unless you have experience with these projects. Hiring a professional to lead with these tasks will be more expensive, but the end results will be far more successful. #2: Outdoor Showers: Thanks to celebrities and popular architects, outdoor showers are having a moment this year as a major remodeling trend. They’re practical outdoor remodeling projects that serve multiple purposes and add unique designs to traditional neighborhoods. You could use your shower to rinse off after swimming in your pool or mowing your lawn. Wash your dog in your outdoor shower to minimize the inevitable indoor mess. They’re also great additions to coastal rental homes for guests who frequently jump into the waves. If you’re considering an outdoor shower, remember to select features like water-resistant tiles to make it last longer. It should also have complete privacy from any neighbors and drainage that directs water away from your home’s foundation. #3: Built-In Bookshelves: Wobbly bookshelves and temporary furniture are old news. People are looking forward to installing built-in bookshelves this year instead. They add value to any property and give it instant character — built-in shelves are more of a bold statement than standing shelves. They’re also a fun opportunity to create a secret doorway or an entertainment cabinet – talk about a fun remodeling trend.

Even small investments can double back the money you earn at resale, so think logically as you plan your next steps. #4: Fireplace Addition: Many buyers are looking for homes that have charming and warm fireplaces in their homes, and they’re not always a common feature. Depending on the layout of your home, it can cost just a few thousand dollars to do this renovation. Even though the investment is small, the return that you might see when reselling is huge. Plus, it will help your home stand out from others that don’t have comparable features. This is a definite must if comparable homes in your area all have fireplaces. Without one, you might miss out on great potential buyers. #5: Expansive Windows: Wider windows are popular for numerous reasons. They let more sunlight into your home, decreasing the need for lamps and more electricity. Big windows can also make rooms appear bigger. Your home will feel brand new with a slightly more expansive view of your backyard or neighborhood. #6: Tankless Water Heaters: Instead of consuming electricity to continuously heat a large tank of water for small usages, tankless heaters warm water only when you need it. They’re more cost-efficient for long-term use than water tanks because you’ll use much less daily electricity. #7: Hidden TV Centers: People don’t want to get rid of their televisions, but sometimes it’s nice to hide TVs away for more family time and a cleaner aesthetic. Building a built-in bookshelf that spans your living room wall or an alcove with hidden doors above your fireplace has great appeal. Whether you have a large flatscreen that prioritizes the environment or a vintage television, you can build an entertainment center that tucks it out of sight whenever you want to unplug.

#8: Jetted Bathtub: Going to the spa is always a treat, but you might not schedule appointments as often as you’d like. That’s one reason homeowners are installing jetted bathtubs in their bathrooms. You can relax in luxury without leaving your home once you remodel your bathroom to fit your preferred jetted model. The simple element will help relieve your daily stress if you love to soak in a bubble bath. #9: Walk-In Closets: Bigger closets give you more room to store your belongings, but they’re so much more than storage space. They also add luxury to any home and create new opportunities for personalization. Consider remodeling your closet this year to include features like cabinets, built-in lighting, display shelves, and seating. You’ll add value to your home and make it feel like a mansion. Plus, it’s always helpful to have extra room for storing your belongings. #10: Kitchen Refresh: When buyers are browsing real estate listings, many are seeking stunning kitchens with amazing details. If your home doesn’t have this yet, upgrading the kitchen is one of the best renovations that you can do. That being said, kitchen remodels can be incredibly expensive. Still, you should also remember that the return on investment can be huge. Some sellers that renovated their kitchen before selling found that their home resale value rose by more than $80,000 after a kitchen remodel, and they even got multiple offers. If comparable properties in your area have renovated kitchens, this will be a must if you want to increase your listing price. If properties do not have renovated kitchens, this might be a great time to stand out. To cut back on costs, consider only renovating part of the kitchen, especially if your kitchen is already partially updated.

You can spend less than $20,000 on renovations if you only update one or two of the following: • Cabinetry • Appliances • Countertops • Flooring • Lighting and fixtures Of course, consider your budget when choosing between these enhancements. It’s ok if you cannot take on a huge renovation project. Even small investments can double back the money you earn at resale, so think logically as you plan your next steps. As A Cardiologist, I Know The Dietary Guidelines Are Failing America’s Hearts By Bret Scher, MD

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. As a practicing Cardiologist for more than 20 years, I’ve watched patients do everything “by the book.” They eat according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and still see their weight climb, Blood Pressure rise, and Heart Health deteriorate. The problem isn’t their effort. It’s the guidance, which promotes high-carb, Low-Fat diets that can actually worsen Heart Disease. Many assume that by following the government’s recommendations they can improve their health. Too often, the opposite is true. With the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines scheduled for release in early 2026, we have a critical opportunity to align federal nutrition policy with modern science. Done right, this update can save lives. Since 1980, the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services have issued the Dietary Guidelines. These recommendations shape the food in school cafeterias, military mess halls, hospitals, and nursing homes. They inform SNAP and WIC benefits, nutrition education, and the labels on grocery store shelves. From the start, the guidelines steered Americans wrong. Saturated Fat -- and Cholesterol by extension -- were stigmatized, while bread, pasta, and cereal became staples of the American diet. Four decades later, the guidelines remain out of step with the health needs of the majority of Americans. They impose arbitrary caps on Saturated Fat, despite no consistent link to higher rates of Heart Disease or mortality. And they direct Americans to get 45-65% of their calories from carbs -- sidelining low-carb options proven to support weight loss, stabilize Blood Sugar, and reduce the risk factors that drive Heart Disease. Today, 93% of Americans live with metabolic dysfunction. More than 75% of Americans are overweight or Obese. Heart

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., with someone having a heart attack roughly every 40 seconds, totaling about 805,000 annually (605,000 first-time, 200,000 recurrent). (www.cdc.gov) Disease mortality rates have increased even as Cholesterol levels have steadily fallen. Like most physicians, I was trained to be wary of fat and to consider carbs the foundation of a healthy diet. I dismissed suggestions that a Low-Carb or Keto Diet could improve cardiovascular outcomes. But when I cautiously introduced the approach to my patients, I saw transformations I couldn’t ignore: their Insulin Sensitivity, Blood Sugar Levels, and Blood Pressure began to improve.

Their experiences mirrored what the science was showing: the Low-Fat, highstarch model had it backwards. A review of randomized trials found that low-carb diets significantly improved weight, Blood Sugar, and Blood Pressure -- the risk factors that drive Heart Disease. In patients with Type 2 Diabetes, Keto approaches dramatically lowered Blood Sugar while delivering substantial weight loss. The upcoming Dietary Guidelines offer a chance to finally get it right. That means

prioritizing whole foods, removing limits on Saturated Fats, and including low-carb options. The nation’s leading killer isn’t inevitable. If the Dietary Guidelines are updated to reflect modern science, millions of Americans could soon be on the path to reclaiming their Heart Health. Bret Scher, MD, is a Board-Certified Cardiologist and Lipidologist, and Medical Director of the Coalition for Metabolic Health. This piece originally ran in the Times of San Diego.
