This past Monday, New Years Day the mountain hosted a competition with skiers from as far away as Australia. Here is where men and women of disabilities gather and compete on the same runs Olympic and other semi-pros compete in. Not just cruise the course, but compete at the international level. WINTER PARK, CO. - As we kick off a New year in Hallandale Beach I wanted to share a bit of inspiration. I typically do not write about personal items in this column however I am going to share an inspiring observation from my recent family holiday. Over the past years I have been fortunate to travel to Winter Park Colorado. The Rocky Mountains are amazing on their own. I call it Gds country. Winter Park is known for it's skiing and it is considered the Mountain Bike Capitol of the west. For bike enthusiasts it is home to one of the big competitions,"Crankwor ks". Mountains, skiing and great summer biking are all highlights of many mountain resorts. The views alone are often inspiring in addtion to the regular attractions Winter Park is also known as home to one of the best Para Olympics training and competition centers. This past Monday, New Years Day the mountain hosted a competition with skiers from as far away as Australia . As you can see from the picture my daughter Jaime took it is truly inspiring. Here is where men and women of disabilities gather and compete on the same runs Olympic and other semi-pros compete in. Not just cruise the course, but compete at the international level. I have watched individual handicapped skiers train over the years. I am always in awe of their courage and commitment. There are often blind skiers on the mountain slopes, too. These men, women and children perform amazingly and in the same conditions as every other skier. Some of the newer students have guides that help them traverse the mountains. I must note that the guides are volunteers. Others often are on their own enjoying themselves. This is their normal. For me, I am always inspired. I hope by sharing this picture and my observation, it inspires our residents. 2012

may have not been an easy year for many of our residents. Just remember you made it. If it was easy for you maybe it is time to voluteer to help someone in need. Not one of us knows what 2013 may throw our way. If these brave men, women and children can move forward under such an extreme circumstance; losing a limb; possibly two or more, or losing their sight and still ski and even compete, you can make it too! You can define your year no matter what crosses your path. Do not make the obstacles define you. Over the holiday break, I received a wonderful phone message that inspired me. Principal Stella Echart from Hallandale High called to let me know our school is now an "A" school. I was just thrilled. When she came to HHS it was a C. She was not daunted and persued and pushed her staff and students to attain an A.

Over the past 12 years, I along with the City Commission, have been committed to our local schools. We have worked closely with HHS over the past three years through our CRA grant partnership to provide a Saturday FCAT tutorial program. It is it great to see this grant pay off. Most importantly it is inspiring to see the perseverance and commitment from all the stakeholders; students teachers, faculty and parents under often socio-economical challenged conditions, compete and win the competition among all other schools. Congratulations to all who united to make this happen. The commissioners that supported the grant , the parents or guardians that were there to support their children, the teachers that teach not only during the week, but on the weekend and the students that have made the wise choice to commit to learning

Hallandale Beach launches first Fridays Food Truck Tour, Jan. 4

The inaugural First Fridays on Federal, a gastronomical feast featuring 20 or more of the finest restaurants on wheels, will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Hallandale Beach City Hall, 400 S. Federal Highway. The City of Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with Sef Gonzalez of Burger Beast to launch the monthly dining option for residents featuring food trucks from throughout South Florida. The monthly food truck rally is scheduled 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. The rally will include the finest mobile vendors from throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The fare will take your palate on a world-wind tour including Cuban, Venezuelan, Mexican, Italian and American selections. Visitors can complete their dinners with sinful desserts and pastries. A DJ will provide music and there will be a bounce house for children. Among the food trucks, restaurants on wheels, booked for the premiere First Fridays on Federal are: 90 Miles (Cuban food); AZ Canteen (a variety of gourmet selections); The Big Ragu (Italian); BITE Gastrotruck (burgers); Crazydilla (Mexican); Daddy’s Grill (Cuban Cafe); Dog Eat Dog (hot dogs); Los Chamos (Venezuelan); Miami Press Truck (sandwiches); Mushaboom (vegan); Porkalicious (pork fare); Purple People Eatery (gourmet selections); and 2 Jive Turkey (turkey selections). Almost one out of four people age 65 and older have lost all of their teeth. Receding gum tissue affects the majority of older people. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the leading causes of tooth loss in older adults. What you may not realize is that oral health is not just important for maintaining a nice-looking smile and being able to eat corn on the cob. Good oral health is essential to quality of life. Consider a few of the reasons: Every tooth in your mouth plays an important role in speaking, chewing and in maintaining proper alignment of other teeth. A major cause of failure in joint replacements is infection, which can travel to the site of the replacement from the mouthin people with periodontal disease. People with dentures or loose and missing teeth often have restricted diets since biting into fresh fruits and vegetables is often not only difficult, but also painful. This likely means they don’t get proper nutrition. Most men and women age 65 and older report that a smile is very important to a person’s appearance. And, maybe most importantly, recent research has advanced the idea that periodontal disease is linked to a number of major health concerns such as heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and diabetes. While your likelihood of developing periodontal disease increases with age, the good news is that research suggests that these higher rates may be related to risk factors other than age. So, periodontal disease is not an inevitable aspect of aging. Risk factors that may make older people more susceptible include general health status, diminished immune status, medications, depression, worsening memory, diminished salivary flow, functional impairments and change in financial status. MEDICATIONS AND ORAL SIDE EFFECTS Older adults are likely to take medications that can impact oral health and affect dental treatment. Hundreds of common medications – including antihistamines, diuretics, pain killers, high blood pressure medications and antidepressants – can cause side effects such

as dry mouth, soft tissue changes, taste changes, and gingival overgrowth. Dry mouth leaves the mouth without enough saliva to wash away food and neutralize plaque, leaving you more susceptible to tooth decay and periodontal disease. In addition, dry mouth can cause sore throat, problems with speaking, difficulty swallowing and hoarseness. Your dentist or periodontist can recommend various methods to restore moisture, including sugarless gum, oral rinses or artificial saliva products. Be sure to tell your periodontist and other dental professionals about any medications that you are taking, including herbal remedies and over-the-counter medication

SPECIAL CONCERNS FOR OLDER WOMEN Women who are menopausal or postmenopausal may experience changes in their mouths. Recent studies suggest that estrogen deficiency could place post-menopausal women at higher risk for severe periodontal disease and tooth loss. In addition, hormonal changes in older women may result in discomfort in the mouth, including dry mouth, pain and burning sensations in the gum tissue and altered taste, especially salty, peppery or sour. Bone loss is associated with both perntal disease and osteoporosis.In addition, menopausal gingivostomatitis affects a small percentage of women. Gums that look dry or shiny, bleed easily and range from abnormally pale to deep red mark this condition. Most women find that estrogen supplements help to relieve these symptoms. Bone loss is associated with both periodontal disease and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis could lead to tooth loss because the density of the bone that supports the teeth may be decreased. More research is being done to determine if and how a relationship between osteoporosis and periodontal disease exists. Women considering Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to help fight osteoporosis should note that this may help protect their teeth as well as other parts of the body. As Santa Claus mingled with the crowd, Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Melanie Reneau did a wonderful job coordinating the evening festivities that included a face painter, a band out on the patio and a bounce house. "This is such a special event to have in the city," said Commissioner Julian. "We all try and get involved in so many things that help to shape this community. That to me, and so many others, is the most important part of being a part of this wonderful city." The party was also a place to be when eating as tasty treats such as "Caribbean Corn On The Cob" was one of the best things we all had to eat. Northwest Civic Association President Delvis Rogers was a member of the first Hallandale High School Key Club, some 10 years ago. Rogers also ran track for the Chargers as well as playing in the high school band. He has been a model for all students to follow as he has been very successful in the business world - always giving back to his community. The beautiful new Foster Park is truly a showcase that many have to see. I had been there once before - when Tampa Bay Bucs lineman Davin Joseph delivered many turkeys and complete dinners to several fortunate people who are selected based on need. As we all know, Joseph, a former Hallandale High standout football player and student, has given back to this community in so many ways, so it was fitting that the two-time Pro Bowl player would have his event in the same tremendous venue as this NW Holiday Party. FOSTER PARK IS TREMENDOUS During that initial visit, Parks and Recreation staff member, Brandon Pilot, showed me some of the highlights that the park offers, including a state-ofthe-art technology center - where the children can utilize the latest computers, an exercise room, a small library with tables for the children to read and study, as well as a playground and a walking trail. There is plenty of grass to play football or have a picnic, weather permitting. The most impressive feature is a banquet room that could host 145 guests. It is pristine and replete with plenty of counter space, a brand new oven with six burners, an ice machine and a large refrigerator and freezer. For a nominal fee, one can rent this room for your next function. This facility is perfect for birthday parties and civic group meetings and park supervisor Melanie Reneau is eager to please as she was quite helpful cooking our hot dogs and providing beverages. This nascent structure came with a price tag of $1.8 million dollars, but all residents of Hallandale Beach should be grateful to the vision of the city commission who voted to erect this elaborate facility and beautify the Palms community. Well folks, it’s almost that time of the year again…. “The Season”… With it comes an abundance of tourists and snowbirds who fill up our hotels, spend a bunch of money, create jobs, and in general, stimulate our local economy……. But with it also brings thousands of people with millions of germs. Colds and flu are everywhere… However, did you know that besides consuming plenty of vitamin C and washing your hands regularly that there is a much simpler way to lower your chances of catching a cold?....Scientists say; “Be Happy”! As reported in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine, a team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, headed by Dr. Sheldon Cohen, undertook a research project consisting of 334 healthy volunteers to determine if emotional style influ-

ences the probability of catching a cold. Each volunteer had their emotional state assessed and were then exposed to equivalent doses of a rhinovirus, the germ that causes the common cold. The results showed that people with a more happy, energetic and relaxed emotional style were significantly less likely to experience symptoms of a fullfledged cold than those with a more negative emotional style. The underlying reason (although not completely understood) given for these results were attributed to the human body’s immune system and the release of certain hormones that effects one’s resistance to infectious diseases. Stress and the immune system is a topic that has been rigorously studied in the past decade, and more and more evidence suggests that mental and emotional state has a significant impact on physical health. Studies have shown that stress and mood may contribute to, or effect the course of such diseases as coronary heart disease, cancer, back problems,

stroke, ulcers, bowel disease, asthma, AIDS, migraine headaches, hypertension, PMS, vaginal infections, epileptic seizures, herpes, skin disorders, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, appendicitis, and periodontal disease…., just

to name a few! Now it’s not that easy to be happy all the time.., and some folks have very difficult lives… But in general, the best you can do to stay relaxed and happy, may be one of the best health behaviors one has… Throw in some daily exercise, good nutrition, a little

Hollywood Historical Society Annual Meeting

She served for many years as treasurer and board member of the HHS and as Hammerstein House docent. MIAMI BEACH - On Friday, December 7th, Mount Sinai Medical Center welcomed back more than 100 patients for its 17th annual Preemie Party. This year’s “Under The Sea” themed celebration reunited babies who defied the odds in the Mount Sinai Abess Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and their parents, with the doctors and nurses who cared for them. “This is probably the highlight of my year,” said Tony Adams, M.D. chief of the NICU department at Mount

Sinai. “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate life.” Mount Sinai neonatologists, Jose Antonio Adams, M.D., and Ignacio Zabaleta, M.D., have worked together at Mount Sinai for more than two decades, taking care of babies from birth to discharge and providing a level of continuity rare in larger NICUs. “Every child is a miracle for us,” said Dr. Zabaleta. “It’s fantastic that God gave us the opportunity to save these little babies.” Among the returning

patients, who ranged in age from babies to teenagers, was high school senior Alexis Levy and her parents, Stacy and Adam Levy. Alexis was born in the Mount Sinai NICU 18 years ago after just 29 weeks in the womb, 11 weeks premature, and weighing a little over two pounds. The Levys lived in Davie at the time and drove to and from the hospital, every day, twice a day for the 59 days that Alexis was in the NICU. “I wouldn’t have delivered anywhere else,”

said mother, Stacy Levy. “Dr. Zabaleta and Dr. Adams were the only two men I wanted treating my child. I was not ready, just because of distance, to cut those men out of my life by any means. I don’t know if I still am. They are household names in our home.” By the time Alexis turned 13, she wanted to find a way to thank the doctors who saved her life. In lieu of presents at her bat mitzvah, she asked her guests to donate money to Mount Sinai’s NICU depart-

Working Together to Help Battle Prostate Cancer

(BPT) - Christmas Day 2012 will see Tim Daugherty back at the head of the dinner table where he belongs with his wife Debbie and their family in his hometown of Florence, Oregon. Two years ago, after an unexpected and frightening diagnosis during a routine medical exam, Tim, a 52-year-old fifth grade school teacher, wasn't sure he'd be around much longer to enjoy the simple pleasures of life with his wife of more than 30 years, their three grown children, and their two grandchildren. Two years younger than Tim and married to him since she was 18-years-old, Debbie, a secretary at the local high school, has always looked after her husband. After several months, Tim’s PSA kept rising and they realized his cancer was continuing to grow. Knowing they’d need to fight this as a team, Debbie was committed to do whatever she could to help Tim during this difficult time. She continued to educate herself about Tim’s disease and his chances for survival. Through her never ending research efforts and communications with their local support group, she found out about PROVENGE®(sipuleucel-T), a breakthrough treatment option for certain men with advanced prostate cancer that uses immunotherapy to stimulate a patient’s own immune system to recognize the cancer cells in the body and attack them. Debbie says she'll never take any of that for granted again. Eating a nutritious breakfast is as easy as 1-2-3

(BPT) - Despite good intentions to prepare a nutritious breakfast, it's often tempting to grab something on the run, only to fall flat when it comes to nutrition and energy. Yet making a nutritious breakfast is as easy as 1-2-3, according to Chef Devin Alexander, a health and wellness expert and best-selling author. "When you start the day with coffee and a pastry, your blood sugar peaks quickly and then it crashes, which may send you for another sugary snack, adding empty calories, fat and sugar to your diet. But if you include three simple components - protein, whole grains and fruit - you'll kick-start your day and feel satisfied until lunch," she says. Here are Chef Alexander's three simple steps to a better breakfast: Step one: protein A key component of a better breakfast is protein. The Institute of Health's Dietary Reference Intake recommendations allow anywhere from 10 percent to 35 percent of total calories for normal healthy

adults. "Most Americans struggle to take in enough protein to make up 35 percent of their daily calories," Alexander says. "One way to stay satisfied all morning is to add protein to your diet as part of breakfast." A recent survey of bacon-eating consumers found that bacon is the most popular breakfast protein, with taste cited as the No. 1 factor that sets it apart from sausage and ham. Despite a love affair with bacon, however, 40 percent of respondents also listed fat content and sodium levels as their most important concerns when selecting bacon. If you want to enjoy delicious bacon flavor and crisp texture, but with less sodium and fat than pork bacon, Jennie-O offers a new and improved turkey bacon, a product with 60 percent less fat and sodium than conventional pork bacon, according to USDA data. Eggs, another source of protein, were cited as the most popular food to eat with bacon, according to survey respondents. If you want

the protein but without saturated fat and cholesterol, there are a variety of egg substitutes and egg whites available that work great in breakfast recipes. Step two: high fiber carbs "It's a myth that all carbohydrates are bad," says Alexander. "Carbohydrates that deliver fiber and nutrients, like fruit and whole grains, provide energy, and the best ones also deliver high fiber to help digestion. With high-fiber choices, your body is using up 25 percent of the highfiber food's calories just to digest it, and it's going to fill you up, too." High-fiber choices abound for breakfast, from whole grain breads and muffins to hot or cold cereals. Jazz up these choices

for added nutrition and flavor. For example, try topping oatmeal with dried fruits such as raisins or apricots, or even unsalted nuts. Top a whole wheat English muffin with chunky peanut butter and a sliced banana for a satisfying treat. Step three: fruits and berries Fruit and berries pack in a host of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plus fiber. And because of their high water content, you can eat more of them than denser fruits. For instance, you can enjoy a full cup of berries versus half of a banana or half of a large apple for the same number of calories. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are all good choices, as the

richer the color, the more antioxidants and vitamins they will have. During the winter when it's harder to get fresh berries, buy freshly frozen berries and keep them on hand to incorporate into breakfast. So have fun. Toss them on cereal. Add them to yogurt for a flavorful parfait. Fold them into pancake batter, and flip with happiness.

Mist a large ramekin (about 5 inches in diameter) with spray. Add the egg whites. Set aside. Heat a mediumnonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Lay the bacon strips sideby-side so they do not touch. Cook 1 to 2 minutes, turn and cook 1 minute longer until cooked to desired crispness, about 2 to 3 minutes total. Place on a paper-towel-lined plate. Meanwhile, poach the egg whites. Separate the halves of the English muffin and toast. Place the bottom half of the English muffin on a plate. Add avocado slices or spread 1 ounce of Wholly Guacamole Classic dipon English muffin. Add the egg, tomato and bacon. Cover with English muffin top. Serve immediately.
